BACKGROUND: Deep-learning convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have outperformed even experienced dermatologists in dermoscopic melanoma detection under controlled conditions. It remains unexplored how real-world dermoscopic image transformations affect CNN robustness. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the consistency of melanoma risk assessment by two commercially available CNNs to help formulate recommendations for current clinical use. METHODS: A comparative cohort study was conducted from January to July 2022 at the Department of Dermatology, University Hospital Basel. Five dermoscopic images of 116 different lesions on the torso of 66 patients were captured consecutively by the same operator without deliberate rotation. Classification was performed by two CNNs (CNN-1/CNN-2). Lesions were divided into four subgroups based on their initial risk scoring and clinical dignity assessment. Reliability was assessed by variation and intraclass correlation coefficients. Excisions were performed for melanoma suspicion or two consecutively elevated CNN risk scores, and benign lesions were confirmed by expert consensus (n = 3). RESULTS: 117 repeated image series of 116 melanocytic lesions (2 melanomas, 16 dysplastic naevi, 29 naevi, 1 solar lentigo, 1 suspicious and 67 benign) were classified. CNN-1 demonstrated superior measurement repeatability for clinically benign lesions with an initial malignant risk score (mean variation coefficient (mvc): CNN-1: 49.5(±34.3)%; CNN-2: 71.4(±22.5)%; p = 0.03), while CNN-2 outperformed for clinically benign lesions with benign scoring (mvc: CNN-1: 49.7(±22.7)%; CNN-2: 23.8(±29.3)%; p = 0.002). Both systems exhibited lowest score consistency for lesions with an initial malignant risk score and benign assessment. In this context, averaging three initial risk scores achieved highest sensitivity of dignity assessment (CNN-1: 94%; CNN-2: 89%). Intraclass correlation coefficients indicated 'moderate'-to-'good' reliability for both systems (CNN-1: 0.80, 95% CI:0.71-0.87, p < 0.001; CNN-2: 0.67, 95% CI:0.55-0.77, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Potential user-induced image changes can significantly influence CNN classification. For clinical application, we recommend using the average of three initial risk scores. Furthermore, we advocate for CNN robustness optimization by cross-validation with repeated image sets. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04605822).

AIM: To evaluate the microtensile bond strength of self-etching adhesive systems in dentin treated with 2% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The occlusal surfaces of 20 human molars were removed and divided into eight groups: 1A, Clearfil SE adhesive (SE) with self-etching technique (TS); 1B, SE with TS and previous application of CHX; 2A, Scotchbond Universal (SBU) adhesive with TS; 2B, SBU adhesive with TS and previous application of CHX; 1C, SE with total-etching technique (TT); 1D, SE with TT and previous application of CHX; 2C, SBU with TT; 2D SBU with TT and previous application of CHX. Composite resin (5mm) was applied on the hybridized surface. Samples were subjected to microtensile test and evaluated on Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX). RESULTS: Low values of bond strength were observed in groups 1A (39,77±11,56) and 2A (40,84±12,49) comparing with 1B (22,86±5,18) and 2B (27,02±5,58). TS group presented adhesive type remover fracture while TT groups presented cohesive at the top of hybrid layer. EDX revealed the presence of CHX crystals for TS, which was not found in the TT. CONCLUSION: The previous application of chlorhexidine on dentin decreased the bond strength of adhesive systems on self-etching technique.

Ethanol production has increased over the years, and Brazil ranking second in the world using sugarcane as the main raw material. However, 10-15 L of vinasse are generated per liter of ethanol produced. Besides large volumes, this wastewater has high polluting potential due to its low pH and high concentrations of organic matter and nutrients. Given the high biodegradability of the organic matter, the treatment of this effluent by anaerobic digestion and membrane separation processes results in the generation of high value-added byproducts such as volatile fatty acids (VFAs), biohydrogen and biogas. Membrane bioreactors have been widely evaluated due to the high efficiency achieved in vinasse treatment. In recent years, high retention membrane bioreactors, in which high retention membranes (nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, forward osmosis and membrane distillation) are combined with biological processes, have gained increasing attention. This paper presents a critical review focused on high retention membrane bioreactors and the challenges associated with the proposed configurations. For nanofiltration membrane bioreactor (NF-MBR), the main drawback is the higher fouling propensity due to the hydraulic driving force. Nonetheless, the development of membranes with high permeability and anti-fouling properties is uprising. Regarding osmotic membrane bioreactor (OMBR), special attention is needed for the selection of a proper draw solution, which desirably should be low cost, have high osmolality, reduce reverse salt flux, and can be easily reconcentrated. Membrane distillation bioreactor (MDBR) also exhibit some shortcomings, with emphasis on energy demand, that can be solved with the use of low-grade and residual heat, or renewable energies. Among the configurations, MDBR seems to be more advantageous for sugarcane vinasse treatment due to the lower energy consumption provided by the use of waste heat from the effluent, and due to the VFAs recovery, which has high added value.

BACKGROUND: Point-of-care-ultrasound can be applied to preview a difficult airway, detect the presence of fluid collection, and soft-tissue edema, and guide the drainage location, although is rarely used. The purpose of this study is to validate a protocol for the assessment of these clinical features on patients with severe odontogenic infections. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a single-group prospective cohort study (n=20) including patients with the diagnosis of deep-neck propagation of odontogenic infection. A transcervical linear high-frequency probe transducer (13-6 MHz) was used to scan the structures of the upper airway and the infectious collections. The drainage was guided by ultrasound and the patients were daily evaluated, according to the protocol. The data were extracted and the airway volume, midline deviation, and other important data such as length of hospital stay, dysphagia, voice alteration, raised floor of the mouth, dyspnea, and neck swelling were registered. RESULTS: The ultrasound examination was correlated with multiple clinical findings, such as dyslalia (p=0,069), dysphagia (p=0,028), dyspnea (p=0,001), among others. This protocol has an advantage as it can be used at bedside evaluation, allowing the assessment of severe and unstable patients, and predicting the increase of the hospitalization time (p=0,019). CONCLUSIONS: This protocol is reliable for the assessment of the upper airway, even in an emergency, predicting not only the severity of the clinical features but aids in the determination of the length of the hospitalization time.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the antimicrobial effect of bioceramic endodontic cements with and without silver nanoparticles on Enterococcus faecalis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six groups were evaluated (n=8), and divided according to the materials: MTA Flow + AgNP ; MTA Flow Group; Bio C Repair + AgNP; Bio C Repair; PBS Cimmo + AgNP; PBS Cimmo. The groups were maintained for 72 h in the suspension of Enterococcus faecalis in Simulated Body Fluid (SBF). Samples of 100 µL were removed from the suspension at 0, 24, 48 and 72 h and seeded in triplicate in a Petri dish. Colony forming units (CFU) were counted using a colony counter. All procedures described were performed in a laminar flow chamber. Two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test and paired t-test were used for statistical analyses (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The addition of silver nanoparticles resulted in a statistically significant difference for MTA and CIMMO PBS cements (p⟨0.05), with the lowest bacterial growth being shown by the MTA group. For all groups, only the times of 48 and 72 h presented results without differences. CONCLUSION: The addition of silver nanoparticles to bioceramic cements was efficient to promote an acceleration of bacterial death.

BACKGROUND: The latest trend in surgery is to look for minimally invasive procedures, with fewer complications and a shorter recovery time. This study aims to compare the minimally- invasive envelope flap, with smaller incision and fewer dissection and the conventional envelope flap, with a 20mm incision, on impacted mandibular third molar surgery, focusing on the hypothesis that there were no differences in postoperative outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A double-blind randomized clinical trial was designed to compare both incisions, focused on determining the approach with minor postoperative side-effects and minor impact on quality-of-life. A total of 60 patients were enrolled for the study if their presented impacted mandibular third molar and was 18-years-old or more. Both groups were evaluated from time elapsed on the surgery, maximum mouth opening, swelling and quality of life assessment. RESULTS: The flap choice influenced facial swelling (p=0,03), pain on the first three days (p=0,037), interference with oral hygiene (p=0,019) and discomfort on speech (p=0,07). Chewing, swallowing, trismus, pain after seven days, postoperative complications and other quality-of-life arrangements were no different between groups. CONCLUSIONS: The minimally- invasive envelope flap could lead to a less painful experience for the patient, with fewer impact on the oral hygiene and speech discomfort.

PURPOSE/AIM: To evaluate the effect of different veneering liquids used for modeling on microhardness, fracture toughness and biaxial flexural strength of a glass-veneering ceramic. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The manufacturer recommended modeling liquid (ML), distilled water (DW), isopropyl alcohol (IA), 0.5% (P05), 1% (P1), and 2% (P2) polyethylene glycol solutions were mixed with feldspathic ceramic powder to form disc-shaped samples (n=20, 15 mm × 1.2 mm). After sintering, samples were mirror-polished and subjected to Vickers indentation (n=5) for measurement of microhardness and fracture toughness. The remaining 15 samples from each group were subjected to biaxial flexural strength. Data were subjected to one-way ANOVA and Weibull analysis. RESULTS: The microhardness was affected by veneering liquid (p=0.002): DW promoted higher microhardness values than ML and IA. Fracture toughness (p=0.301) and flexural strength (p=0.930) were not affected by the veneering liquid but Weibull parameters were affected. All groups presented surface pores under high magnification. CONCLUSION: Even though the use of DW led to higher values of surface microhardness than the ML, all obtained values are inside the range of enamel microhardness values reported in the literature. Such parameters may affect antagonist wear and should be reported in clinical trials.

Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 is a major etiologic agent that causes bloody diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis, and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Shiga toxin (Stx) is the main virulence factor of EHEC responsible for the progression to HUS. Although many laboratories have made efforts to develop an effective treatment for Stx-mediated HUS, a specific therapy has not been found yet. Human consumption of bovine colostrum is known to have therapeutic effects against several gastrointestinal infections because of the peptide and proteins (including antibodies) with direct antimicrobial and endotoxin-neutralizing effects contained in this fluid. We have previously demonstrated that colostrum from Stx type 2 (Stx2)-immunized pregnant cows effectively prevents Stx2 cytotoxicity and EHEC O157:H7 pathogenicity. In this study we evaluated the preservation of the protective properties of hyperimmune colostrum against Stx2 (HIC-Stx2) after pasteurization and spray-drying processes by performing in vitro and in vivo assays. Our results showed that reconstituted HIC-Stx2 colostrum after pasteurization at 60°C for 60 min and spray-dried under optimized conditions preserved specific IgG that successfully neutralized Stx2 cytotoxicity on Vero cells. Furthermore, this pasteurized/dehydrated and reconstituted HIC-Stx2 preserved the protective capacity against EHEC infection in a weaned mice model. The consumption of hyperimmune HIC-Stx2 bovine colostrum could be effective for HUS prevention in humans as well as in EHEC control in calves. However, further studies need to be done to consider its use for controlling EHEC infections.

The increase in biofuel production by 2030, driven by the targets set at the 21st United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21), will promote an increase in ethanol production, and consequently more vinasse generation. Sugarcane vinasse, despite having a high polluting potential due to its high concentration of organic matter and nutrients, has the potential to produce value-added resources such as volatile fatty acids (VFA), biohydrogen (bioH2) and biomethane (bioCH4) from anaerobic digestion. The objective of this paper is to present a critical review on the vinasse treatment by anaerobic digestion focusing on the final products. Effects of operational parameters on production and recovery of these resources, such as pH, temperature, retention time and type of inoculum were addressed. Given the importance of treating sugarcane vinasse due to its complex composition and high volume generated in the ethanol production process, this is the first review that evaluates the production of VFAs, bioH2 and bioCH4 in the treatment of this organic residue. Also, the challenges of the simultaneous production of VFA, bioH2 and bioCH4 and resources recovery in the wastewater streams generated in flex-fuel plants, using sugarcane and corn as raw material in ethanol production, are presented. The installation of flex-fuel plants was briefly discussed, with the main impacts on the treatment process of these effluents either jointly or simultaneously, depending on the harvest season.

OBJECTIVE: The flat occlusal plate has been recommended to reduce stress concentration in implant prosthesis treatments. The purpose was to investigate the influence of the occlusal splint on three-element implant-supported fixed prosthesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A three-dimensional virtual model was created consisting of a cortical and spongy bone block simulating the region from first premolar to the maxillary first molar using two HE or MT implants (4 x 11mm) with Ti and/or Y-TZP abutments. The second premolar was the pontic of the prosthesis. The three-element fixed prosthesis with a zirconia infrastructure and Y-TZP coating were cemented, in addition to using a flat occlusal splint made of acrylic resin in the region. Combined axial and oblique loads of 100N and 300N were applied. RESULTS: The tensile stresses on MT implant bone tissue produced values of 4-19% lower than those of HE implants. The lowest differences were observed for oblique loading with an occlusal splint, with a 4% (Ti-Y-TZP) and 9% (Ti-Ti) decrease. When the compressive stresses were evaluated, HE implants produced lower values than MT implants. CONCLUSION: A significant increase was observed in the oblique loading stresses in the absence of occlusal splints, regardless of the applied load.

BACKGROUND: Cope's gray treefrog, Dryophytes chrysoscelis, withstands the physiological challenges of corporeal freezing, partly by accumulating cryoprotective compounds of hepatic origin, including glycerol, urea, and glucose. We hypothesized that expression of genes related to cryoprotectant mobilization and stress tolerance would be differentially regulated in response to cold. Using high-throughput RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq), a hepatic transcriptome was generated for D. chrysoscelis, and gene expression was compared among frogs that were warm-acclimated, cold-acclimated, and frozen. RESULTS: A total of 159,556 transcripts were generated; 39% showed homology with known transcripts, and 34% of all transcripts were annotated. Gene-level analyses identified 34,936 genes, 85% of which were annotated. Cold acclimation induced differential expression both of genes and non-coding transcripts; freezing induced few additional changes. Transcript-level analysis followed by gene-level aggregation revealed 3582 differentially expressed genes, whereas analysis at the gene level revealed 1324 differentially regulated genes. Approximately 3.6% of differentially expressed sequences were non-coding and of no identifiable homology. Expression of several genes associated with cryoprotectant accumulation was altered during cold acclimation. Of note, glycerol kinase expression decreased with cold exposure, possibly promoting accumulation of glycerol, whereas glucose export was transcriptionally promoted by upregulation of glucose-6-phosphatase and downregulation of genes of various glycolytic enzymes. Several genes related to heat shock protein response, DNA repair, and the ubiquitin proteasome pathway were upregulated in cold and frozen frogs, whereas genes involved in responses to oxidative stress and anoxia, both potential sources of cellular damage during freezing, were downregulated or unchanged. CONCLUSION: Our study is the first to report transcriptomic responses to low temperature exposure in a freeze-tolerant vertebrate. The hepatic transcriptome of Dryophytes chrysoscelis is responsive to cold and freezing. Transcriptomic regulation of genes related to particular pathways, such as glycerol biosynthesis, were not all regulated in parallel. The physiological demands associated with cold and freezing, as well as the transcriptomic responses observed in this study, are shared with several organisms that face similar ecophysiological challenges, suggesting common regulatory mechanisms. The role of transcriptional regulation relative to other cellular processes, and of non-coding transcripts as elements of those responses, deserve further study.

Anaerobic sludge granulation was evaluated in an expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor based on the increases in the specific organic loading rate (SOLR). The effect of precursor substances (calcium chloride, sodium chloride, and tannin) on the development of granular sludge was also investigated in batch reactors. The reactors were fed with synthetic sewage and operated in mesophilic conditions. The EGSB was operated with a variable hydraulic retention time (HRT) and the batch reactors, with cycles of 8 h and 16 h. The increase of SOLR from 17.4 ±â€¯7.4 to 104.6 ±â€¯66.7 mgCOD gVSS-1 d-1 in the EGSB resulted in an increase on the average granules diameter from 344.3 to 1583.3 µm. These conditions also favored the reduction rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) concentration in the reactor. When the upflow velocity suffered an abrupt increase (from 0.06 L h-1 to 0.25 L h-1), the granules size began to decrease and lose their settleability characteristics. Considering this, it is proposed to start the biomass granulation process without effluent recirculation, and, after the granules reach the desired size and settleability capacity, the normal operation of EGSB reactor starts. The results showed that calcium chloride was more efficient for granulation. CaCl2 addition can be performed only during the reactor's start-up, improving granulation and reducing start-up time. Thus, these results have practical implications as granules maintenance is the key to the proper EGSB operation.

As genomic sequencing expands, so does our knowledge of the link between genetic variation and disease. Deeper catalogs of variant frequencies improve identification of benign variants, while sequencing affected individuals reveals disease-associated variation. Accumulation of human genetic data thus makes reanalysis a means to maximize the benefits of clinical sequencing. We implemented pipelines to systematically reassess sequencing data from 494 individuals with developmental disability. Reanalysis yielded pathogenic or likely pathogenic (P/LP) variants that were not initially reported in 23 individuals, 6 described here, comprising a 16% increase in P/LP yield. We also downgraded 3 LP and 6 variants of uncertain significance (VUS) due to updated population frequency data. The likelihood of identifying a new P/LP variant increased over time, as ~22% of individuals who did not receive a P/LP variant at their original analysis subsequently did after 3 years. We show here that reanalysis and data sharing increase the diagnostic yield and accuracy of clinical sequencing.

The cattle tick, Rhipicephalus microplus (Canestrini, 1888) (Ixodida: Ixodidae), is the most important ectoparasite in cattle-breeding areas and is responsible for severe economic losses. Synthetic acaricides have been used to control this parasite. However, the need for safer products has stimulated the search for new acaricides, such as those to be obtained from medicinal plants. The essential oil of Syzygium aromaticum (clove) has many biological properties and shows great potential for use in veterinary applications. In the context of the need for new agents, this study investigated the in vitro properties of the hydrolate, essential oil and the main constituent of S. aromaticum, eugenol, in formulated and free applications against larvae and females of R. microplus. Eugenol and the essential oil caused 100% mortality in larvae at starting applications of 2.5 mg/mL and 5.0 mg/mL, respectively. The hydrolate showed no activity. Both eugenol and essential oil had good efficacy in adult immersion tests at 50 mg/mL and achieved 100% efficacy at a concentration of 100 mg/mL. The results of these tests reaffirm the important potential of clove essential oil and eugenol.

Even with advent of next generation sequencing complete sequencing of large disease-associated genes and intronic regions is economically not feasible. This is the case of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), the gene responsible for cystic fibrosis (CF). Yet, to confirm a CF diagnosis, proof of CFTR dysfunction needs to be obtained, namely by the identification of two disease-causing mutations. Moreover, with the advent of mutation-based therapies, genotyping is an essential tool for CF disease management. There is, however, still an unmet need to genotype CF patients by fast, comprehensive and cost-effective approaches, especially in populations with high genetic heterogeneity (and low p.F508del incidence), where CF is now emerging with new diagnosis dilemmas (Brazil, Asia, etc). Herein, we report an innovative mRNA-based approach to identify CFTR mutations in the complete coding and intronic regions. We applied this protocol to genotype individuals with a suspicion of CF and only one or no CFTR mutations identified by routine methods. It successfully detected multiple intronic mutations unlikely to be detected by CFTR exon sequencing. We conclude that this is a rapid, robust and inexpensive method to detect any CFTR coding/intronic mutation (including rare ones) that can be easily used either as primary approach or after routine DNA analysis.

Rice is a cereal that presents a great ability to adapt to different soil and climate conditions. However, as it is a tropical crop with C3 metabolism, it performs better in warm temperatures with high solar radiation. Tolerance to stress caused by low temperatures is a highly complex process that involves various metabolic pathways and cellular compartments, resulting in general or specific effects on plant growth and development. In order to observe the true effect of a particular stress on genetic expression, reference genes need to be chosen for real-time PCRs, the expression levels of which should remain stable independent of the situation imposed. In this paper, the expression stability was evaluated of the actin 11 (ACT11), ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme 2 (UBC-E2), glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), beta tubilin (ß-Tubulin), eukaryotic initiation factor 4α (eIF-4-α), eukaryotic initiation factor 1α (eIF-1-α), ubiquitin 10 (UBQ10), ubiquitin 5 (UBQ5), aquaporin (TIP41), and cyclophilin genes, in two rice genotypes cultivated in low temperature (13°C) conditions in vegetative stage (V4). The analysis material (leaves) was collected after 0, 6, 24, 48, and 72 h of exposure to the stress. In this study, the geNorm, BestKeeper, ΔCt, NormFinder, and RefFinder methods were used to evaluate the expression stability of the candidate reference genes. The results revealed that the most indicated genes for all the analysis methods were UBQ10 and UBQ5 for BRS Bojuru and BRS Pampa, respectively. On the other hand, the eIF-1-α gene presents the least expression stability and is not indicated for studies of rice plants subjected to low temperatures. The validation with the antioxidant system genes SODCc1-Cu/Zn, CATC, APX2, and GR2 confirmed the importance of using previously tested normalizing genes for adequate real-time PCR results.

A strategy for monitoring fermentation processes, specifically, simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) of corn mash, was developed. The strategy covered the development and use of first principles, semimechanistic and unstructured process model based on major kinetic phenomena, along with mass and energy balances. The model was then used as a reference model within an identification procedure capable of running on-line. The on-line identification procedure consists on updating the reference model through the estimation of corrective parameters for certain reaction rates using the most recent process measurements. The strategy makes use of standard laboratory measurements for sugars quantification and in situ temperature and liquid level data. The model, along with the on-line identification procedure, has been tested against real industrial data and have been able to accurately predict the main variables of operational interest, i.e., state variables and its dynamics, and key process indicators. The results demonstrate that the strategy is capable of monitoring, in real time, this complex industrial biomass fermentation. This new tool provides a great support for decision-making and opens a new range of opportunities for industrial optimization.

OBJECTIVE: the aim of this study was to evaluate the marginal misfit at the interface between a ceramic coping and its abutment. METHODS: Twenty-four specimens were made with solid abutments. The specimens were divided into 3 groups according to the ceramic system (n = 8): Lava (zirconia), IPS e.max Press (lithium disilicate), and IPS Empress Esthetic (leucite). All copings were cemented with resin luting agent (RelyX U200) and the marginal misfit were evaluated at 3 different times: initial, after cementation, and after mechanical cycling using a linear measuring microscope (Measuring Microscope STM-Olympus) at a magnification of 40x. All specimens were subjected to mechanical cycling (1 million cycles) by an universal testing machine (Instron 8800). The results were statistically analyzed using Analysis of Variance and Student's t-test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: all groups showed an increase in the marginal misfit after cementation. The lithium disilicate group demonstrated the lowest interacial gap values at each evaluation (p = 0.001). The zirconia and leucite groups showed similar interfacial gap values (initial, p = 0.244; and post cementation, p = 0.751). CONCLUSIONS: the cementation increase the marginal misfit, but the mechanical cycling did not influence the marginal misfit of the ceramics systems evaluated.

Microalgae have been proposed as an option for wastewater treatment since the 1960s, but still, this technology has not been expanded to an industrial scale. In this paper, the major factors limiting the performance of these systems are analysed. The composition of the wastewater is highly relevant, and especially the presence of pollutants such as heavy metals and emerging compounds. Biological and engineering aspects are also critical and have to be improved to at least approximate the performance of conventional systems, not just in terms of capacity and efficiency but also in terms of robustness. Finally, the harvesting of the biomass and its processing into valuable products pose a challenge; yet at the same time, an opportunity exists to increase economic profitability. Land requirement is a major bottleneck that can be ameliorated by improving the system's photosynthetic efficiency. Land requirement has a significant impact on the economic balance, but the profits from the biomass produced can enhance these systems' reliability, especially in small cities.

Different rice (Oryza sativa L.) genotypes were subjected to high salinity and low temperature (150 mM NaCl and 13°C, respectively) for 0, 6, 24, 48, or 72 h. We evaluated the simultaneous expression of the genes OsCATA, OsCATB, and OsCATC, correlated gene expression with enzyme activity, and verified the regulation of these genes through identification of cis-elements in the promoter region. The hydrogen peroxide content increased in a tolerant genotype and decreased in a sensitive genotype under both stress conditions. Lipid peroxidation increased in the tolerant genotype when exposed to cold, and in the sensitive genotype when exposed to high salinity. Catalase activity significantly increased in both genotypes when subjected to 13°C. In the tolerant genotype, OsCATA and OsCATB were the most responsive to high salinity and cold, while in the sensitive genotype, OsCATA and OsCATC responded positively to saline stress, as did OsCATA and OsCATB to low temperature. Cis-element analysis identified different regulatory sequences in the catalase promoter region of each genotype. The sensitive genotype maintained a better balance between hydrogen oxyacid levels, catalase activity, and lipid peroxidation under low temperature than the resistant genotype. OsCATA and OsCATB were the most responsive in the salt-tolerant genotype to cold, OsCATA and OsCATC were the most responsive to saline stress, and OsCATA and OsCATB were the most responsive to chilling stress in the sensitive genotype. There were positive correlations between catalase activity and OsCATB expression in the tolerant genotype under saline stress and in the sensitive genotype under cold stress.
