RESUMEN

Crawfish can be easily spoiled due to their rich nutrition and high water content, which is difficult to preserve. In this study, the dominant spoilage organisms in crawfish which were stored at 4 °C in vacuum packaging were identified by high-throughput sequencing technology; after sequencing the full-length 16S rRNA gene, the changes in the bacterial community structure, diversity and quality (texture, flavor, etc.) were analyzed. Our results reflected that the specific spoilage organisms (SSOs) of crawfish were Aeromonas sobria, Shewanella putrefaciens, Trichococcus pasteurii and Enterococcus aquimarinus, since their abundances significantly increased after being stored for 12 days at 4 °C under vacuum conditions. At the same time, the abundance and diversity of the microbial community decreased with storage time, which was related to the rapid growth of the dominant spoilage organisms and the inhibition of other kinds of microorganisms at the end of the spoilage stage. Function prediction results showed that the gene which contributed to metabolism influenced the spoilage process. Moreover, the decline in texture of crawfish was negatively correlated to the richness of SSOs; this may be because SSOs can produce alkaline proteases to degrade the myofibrillar protein. On the contrary, the unpleasant flavor of crawfish, resulting from volatile flavor compounds such as S-containing compounds and APEOs, etc., is negatively correlated to the richness of SSOs, due to the metabolism of SSOs by secondary metabolites such as terpenoids, polyketides and lips, which can lead to decarboxylation, deamination and enzymatic oxidation. These results are very important to achieve the purpose of targeted inhibition of crawfish spoilage at 4 °C in vacuum packaging.

Past reports have indicated a high prevalence of milk contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), but the pooled prevalence rates of S. aureus and MRSA in pasteurized and boiled cow's milk, raw cow's milk, and raw Caprinae milk (raw sheep's milk and raw goat's milk) and across different periods, continents, economic conditions and purchase locations remain inconsistent. We searched relevant articles published in PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science before July 2016. The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) Statement was used to evaluate the quality of 93 included studies. We observed that the pooled prevalence rates of S. aureus contamination in pasteurized and boiled cow's milk, raw cow's milk, and raw Caprinae milk were 15.4% (95% CI, 6.1-27.5%), 33.5% (95% CI, 29.5-37.7%) and 25.8% (95% CI, 17.5-35.0%), respectively. The pooled prevalence rates of MRSA contamination were 4.9% (95% CI, 0.0-15.7%), 2.3% (95% CI, 1.3-3.6%), and 1.1% (95% CI, 0.5-1.8%), respectively. The prevalence of S. aureus contamination in raw cow's milk increased over time. However, the pooled prevalence of raw cow's milk contaminated with S. aureus was lowest in European studies. These findings give an indication of the consequence of better milk regulation in Europe. High S. aureus prevalence rates in raw milk collected from farms and processing companies pose a potential threat to consumers. The implementation of good hygiene practices, appropriate health knowledge, and food safety principles at the farm level, as well as the prudent use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine and heat treatment before drinking, are necessary to reduce the potential risk of S. aureus and MRSA contamination.

Diabetic population were reported more likely to suffer carriage and infection with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) than non-diabetic population. We aim to elucidate the prevalence and characteristics of S. aureus and MRSA nasal carriage among diabetic population in the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2001-2004. Univariate analyses were conducted using Chi-square test, Fisher's exact probability test or student t test, as appropriate. Multivariate analy¬sis using logistic regression was conducted to assess the association between influencing factors and S. aureus and MRSA nasal carriage. 1010 diabetic participants were included in the study. The prevalence of S. aureus and MRSA nasal carriage were 28.32% and 1.09%, respec¬tively. After the logistic regression, ever had a painful sensation or tingling in hands or feet past three months (Odds Ratio [OR] = 0.359, 95% Confidence Interval [CI], 0.146-0.882) was significant among S. aureus nasal carriage and gender (OR = 3.410, 95% CI, 1.091-10.653) was significant among MRSA nasal carriage. The proportions of staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) A, SEB, SEC, SED, Toxic-shock syn¬drome toxin-1, and Panton Valentine Leukocidin toxin among S. aureus strains were 18.75%, 3.13%, 12.50%, 15.63%, 28.13%, and 9.38%, respectively. 63.63% of MRSA strains were community-acquired, 27.27% were hospital-acquired, and 9.09% were non-typeable. Diabetic patients might be more likely to carry S. aureus and MRSA in the United States. Improving hand hygiene compliance, reducing antibiotic overuse, screening for carriers, and decolonization are recommended to reduce the spread of S. aureus and MRSA, especially in community.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), survives in dry conditions and can persist for long periods on surfaces touched by humans. Studies that estimate the proportions and characteristics of S. aureus and MRSA contamination in non-hospital environments are lacking. Therefore, we conducted a proportion meta-analysis and reviewed the features of antibiotic resistance and molecular genetics. METHODS: Articles published between January 2005 and December 2015 that studied proportions of S. aureus and MRSA contamination in non-hospital environments were retrieved from the Medline database, Ovid database and Science Direct database. All statistics were analyzed by STATA 14.1. RESULTS: Twenty-nine articles were included. The overall proportions of S. aureus and MRSA contamination were 41.1% (95%CI 29-54%) and 8.6% (95%CI 5-13%), respectively. The proportion of MRSA contamination increased over time. From the articles, the proportion of Panton-Valentine Leukociden (PVL) genes among MRSA isolates was 54.5%, and the proportion of the qac gene was 100.0%. Distribution of the multilocus sequence type (MLST) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) of MRSA indicated that MRSA strains were from both hospitals and communities. CONCLUSION: The overall proportions of S. aureus and MRSA contamination in non-hospital environments were high. The outcomes of antibiotic resistance and high proportions of PVL genes indicated that the antibiotic resistance of S. aureus and MRSA were notable. According to the different distributions of MLST and SCCmec of MRSA, we can infer that cross-circulation is within hospitals, communities, and livestock. The results also show that the risk from the MRSA strains was cross-transmitted among the population. High proportions of the qac gene of MRSA might indicate that current disinfection of MRSA has not been achieved, and it might be better to further identify the efficiency of the sterilization processes in a non-hospital environment so that relevant departments can take measures to improve disinfection of MRSA in non-hospital environments.

Although thermosonication (TS) treatment has been widely used in food sterilization, the viable but non-culturable (VBNC) of bacteria with TS treatment has still concerned potential food safety and public health. The molecular mechanism of VBNC status of bacteria with TS treatment is not clearly known. Therefore, in this study, we used Shewanella putrefaciens, which was a common putrefactive bacteria in aquatic products, to study the VBNC state of bacteria with TS treatment. Firstly, our results revealed that S. putrefaciens still could enter the VBNC state after TS treatments: 50 kHz, 300 W, 30 min ultrasonic treatment and 70 °C heating; Subsequently, we found the VBNC state of S. putrefaciens can resist the damage of TS treatment, such as cell wall break, DNA degradation, etc; Finally, four-dimensional data-independent acquisition-based proteomics showed that under VBNC state, S. putrefaciens upregulated functional proteins to resist TS treatment, such as: ribosomal proteins to accelerate the synthesis of stress proteins to counteract TS treatments, ornithine decarboxylase SpeF and MraY to repair TS treatment-induced damage, etc. Meanwhile, S. putrefaciens downregulates metabolic and transport functional proteins such as dehydrogenase to reduce the metabolism. Importantly, among those proteins, the ribosomal transcriptional regulatory protein family, such as rpsB, etc, may be the key proteins for S. putrefaciens entering VBNC state. This finding can provide some new strategies for preventing VBNC status of bacteria with TS treatment, such as: inhibition of key proteins, etc.

Chitin is a polysaccharide and possesses numerous beneficial properties such as nontoxicity, biodegradability and biocompatibility, which draws much attention to its applications in food. Crayfish shell is a source of chitin alongside an antioxidants and a potential source of beneficial dietary fiber. In this study, chitin (CH) and crayfish shell (CS) with different concentrations were used to study their impact on pasting characteristics of flour mixture (wheat flour and glutinous rice flour) and influence on physicochemical and starch digestion property of puffed biscuit. The Rapid Visco-Analyzer results showed that the viscosity of powder mixture was decreased with the ratio of CH and CS increased. CH resulted in lowest peak viscosity and breakdown values of mixed powder. It was indicated that increasing amounts of CH and CS led to significantly reduced moisture content, expansion ratio but raised density of biscuits. CH and CS inhibited starch digestion and promoted a remarkable increase (P < 0.05) of resistant starch (RS) content. The hydrolysis kinetic analysis suggested a decelerating influence of CH on the hydrolysis content with lower values of equilibrium hydrolysis percentage (C∞) while CS on hydrolysis rate with lower kinetic constant (K). The estimated glycemic index (eGI) of the CH (15-20%) samples were below 55. These results are of great significance in delaying starch digestion and provided a better choice in design of fried puffed snacks for special crowd with chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity.

In this study, a composite film was prepared using irradiated chitosan, lysozyme, and carrageenan for crayfish preservation. First, the chitosan was degraded by gamma rays, with the best antimicrobial properties being found at 100 KGy. By using the response surface method, the components of the composite film were irradiated chitosan (CS) at 0.016 g/mL, lysozyme (LM) at 0.0015 g/mL, and carrageenan (CA) at 0.002 g/mL. When compared to the natural chitosan film, the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results demonstrated that the chemical properties of the composite film did not change with the addition of LM and CA, while the physical and antibacterial properties increased, including tensile strength (16.87 → 20.28 N), hydrophobicity (67.9 → 86.3°), and oxygen permeability (31.66 → 24.31 m3·um/m2·day·kPa). Moreover, the antibacterial activity of the films increased with the addition of LM and CA, especially for Shewanella putrefaciens: the zone of inhibition (mm) of CS, CS/LM, and CS/LM/CA was 9.97 ± 0.29, 14.32 ± 0.31, and 14.78 ± 0.21, respectively. Finally, the CS/LM/CA film could preserve crayfish for 10 days at 4 °C, whereas the polyethylene (PE) film could only preserve them for 6 days. Moreover, the composite film was excellent at inhibiting oxidative deterioration (TBARS value: 2.12 mg/kg, day10) and keeping the texture of crayfish muscle. Overall, our results suggested that the CS/LM/CA composite film produced can be applied as a biodegradable film in aquatic product packaging.

Aquatic products have an important role in global agriculture, but the challenges associated with preservation have limited their marketability. Essential oil (EO), such as sweet orange oil (SOEO), has been widely used for preservation due to its excellent antibacterial ability. However, the volatilization of EO limits its application in food preservation. In this study, SOEO was extracted from sweet orange peel by steam distillation and then stored in microcapsules. The components of the microcapsules were as follows: the porous starch was chosen as an adsorbed substrate to store SOEO (PS/SOEO), and sodium alginate (SA) and chitosan (CMCS) were used as shell material to delay the volatilization of SOEO using the sharp pore coagulation method. Our results showed that the main antibacterial ingredients in SOEO were aldehydes (33.93%) and d-limonene (15.38%). The microcapsules were of an irregular shape (oval), and the size of the microcapsules was 1.2 ± 0.1 cm as measured by a digital micrometer. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that there were a lot of pores on the surface of the starch after modification, but sodium alginate and chitosan could well encapsulate these pores. The results of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis also showed that SOEO was successful encapsulated into the porous starch. The results of compression test and releasing kinetics studies suggested that CMCS and SA improved the mechanical and slow-releasing ability of SOEO microcapsules. The best antibacterial performance was obtained when 0.8 g of SOEO microcapsules was added. Finally, the shelf life of crawfish could be extended to 6 days by SOEO microcapsule (1/10 g, SOEO microcapsule/crawfish) under room temperature. These results provide a systematic understanding of the antibacterial capabilities of sweet orange essential oil microcapsules, which can contribute to the development of preservation methods for aquatic products.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) can cause serious infections in elementary students. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate the quantitative associations of school environmental contamination with nasal carriage of MRSA by students in a dose-response manner. Phenotypic and molecular characterizations were performed to further assess the associations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to August 2016 in eight elementary schools in Guangzhou, China. A multistage stratified cluster sampling design was used to include Chinese students and selected classes. Nasal swabs from students and environmental swabs from the schools were collected. The dose-response relationship was examined using multivariate logistic regression modeling with cluster-correlated robust variance estimates to account for correlations of isolates between the environment and the students. RESULTS: The prevalence rates of MRSA among 1705 students and 1240 environment samples were 10.15% and 3.87%, respectively. There were positive prevalence associations of school (odds ratio 1.09, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.05-1.13) and class (odds ratio 1.03, 95% CI 1.01-1.06) environmental contamination with nasal carriage of MRSA isolates by students. CONCLUSIONS: Comparisons of MRSA isolates between the environment and the students in terms of phenotypic and molecular characterization were mostly insignificant. School environmental contamination with MRSA was positively associated with MRSA nasal carriage by elementary students. Disinfection measures and education regarding hand hygiene should be considered to decrease the prevalence of MRSA nasal carriage among students.

OBJECTIVE: We aim to assess the similarities of proportional, phenotypic, and molecular characteristics between the school environment and schoolchildren on methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) isolates. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted between March 2016 and August 2016 in eight elementary schools in Guangzhou, China. Nasal swabs from students and environmental swabs from school environments were collected. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses under a multistage stratified cluster cross-sectional survey design were performed to access the prevalence relationship and influencing factors, respectively. Phenotypic and molecular characterizations of MSSA isolates were conducted using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method and polymerase chain reaction assays, respectively. RESULTS: In total, 1705 schoolchildren and 1240 environmental samples from 40 classes in eight elementary schools obtained between March and August 2016 were include in this study. The rates of MSSA prevalence among schoolchildren and the environment were 11.44% (195/1705) and 4.60% (57/1240), respectively. The odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) on the prevalence of MSSA isolates were 1.11 (95% CI, 1.05-1.29; P = 0.010) and 1.04 (95% CI, 1.01-1.07; P = 0.003) for the school or class environment and students, respectively. Similar phenotypic and molecular characteristics were identified between schoolchildren and the environment. A cause and effect relationship could not be established because the study design was cross-sectional. CONCLUSIONS: Because of the cross-sectional design, we can reveal the association between school environment and schoolchildren on MSSA, but it is not a cause and effect relationship.

The intensive use of pesticides has caused serious environmental pollution and ecological issues. Thus, it is imperative to explore an efficient way to minimize the pesticide residues and pollution. In the present study, we employed the superabsorbent hydrogels (SHs)-coated pesticide 14C-carbendazim (H-14C-MBC) to investigate the fate of MBC in aerobic soils and to assess the soil microbial state during incubation. The results showed that after coating with SHs, MBC dissipation was improved significantly by 34.2-54.1% compared with that in the control (p<0.05), reducing the persistence of MBC in soil matrix. At 100d, the release of 14C-CO2 was enhanced by 68.0% and 46.6% in neutral loamy soil and basic saline soil, respectively, with respect to the control, resulting in more complete degradation and detoxification of MBC. Additionally, the bound residue in soils, which was associated with potential environmental risk and pollution, was reduced by 15.2% and 14.2%, respectively, compared with that in control soils. The microbial diversity of post-H-14C-MBC soil varied, and microbial composition and abundance remained different from the control, even with the refreshment of soil stability and fertility compared with the blank soil. These results demonstrate the environmental behavior of SHs-coated MBC in soils, and illustrate that SHs-encapsulated formulations would be a promising measure for reducing the soil-residue pollution and environmental risk of pesticides.

Previous research has indicated that raw meats are frequently contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus, but data regarding the pooled prevalence rates of S. aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) contamination in different types of raw meat products (beef, chicken, and pork) and across different periods, regions, and purchase locations remain inconsistent. We systematically searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Ovid, Web of Science, and HighWire databases to identify studies published up to June 2016. The STROBE guidelines were used to assess the quality of the 39 studies included in this meta-analysis. We observed no significant differences in the pooled prevalence rates of S. aureus and MRSA contamination identified in various raw meat products, with overall pooled prevalence rates of 29.2% (95% confidence interval [CI], 22.8 to 35.9%) and 3.2% (95% CI, 1.8 to 4.9%) identified for the two contaminants, respectively. In the subgroup analyses, the prevalence of S. aureus contamination in chicken products was highest in Asian studies and significantly decreased over time worldwide. In European studies, the prevalence rates of S. aureus contamination in chicken and pork products were lower than those reported on other continents. The pooled prevalence rates of S. aureus contamination in chicken and pork products and MRSA contamination in beef and pork products were significantly higher in samples collected from retail sources than in samples collected from slaughterhouses and processing plants. These results highlight the need for good hygiene during transportation to and manipulation at retail outlets to reduce the risk of transmission of S. aureus and MRSA from meat products to humans.

BACKGROUND: Colonal complex 5 (CC5) has been referred to as the most pandemic community-associated Staphylococcus aureus in most Asian countries. However, few studies have focused on CC5 isolates in pregnant women. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and phenotypic and molecular characteristics of S aureus and methicillin-resistant S aureus (MRSA) CC5 nasal colonization in pregnant Chinese women. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study between August and November 2015 in 2 hospitals in Shenzhen, China. Pregnant women were asked to complete questionnaires, and nasal swabs were collected. Log-binomial regression models were used to explore factors influencing S aureus and MRSA nasal colonization between the CC5 and non-CC5 or non-S aureus groups. Polymerase chain reaction assays were used to detect the molecular characteristics of isolates. RESULTS: Overall, 2,172 pregnant women were included in this study. The prevalence of S aureus and MRSA was 25.60% (n = 556) and 5.62% (n = 122), respectively. The multilocus sequence typing of S aureus isolates was diversified. A lower frequency of daily handwashing (<7) and weekly bathing (<7) were risk factors for the prevalence of S aureus (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR], 1.13; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.03-1.41 and aPR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.03-1.45) and MRSA (aPR, 1.96; 95% CI, 1.23-3.14 and aPR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.21-2.44) nasal colonization in the CC5 groups of pregnant women. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of S aureus and MRSA nasal colonization was moderate. The molecular characteristics of S aureus and MRSA isolates indicated possible cross-transmission among multiple resources. A higher frequency of daily handwashing and weekly bathing significantly decreased the prevalence of S aureus and MRSA CC5 nasal colonization in the pregnant women.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Evidence suggests that diabetes might cause an increase in colonization of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in community settings. We carried out a cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence and influencing factors of S. aureus and MRSA nasal colonization among a community-based diabetes population, and to identify the characteristics of the isolated strains. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 956 participants from 11 community settings were included in the study. RESULTS: Of the 529 diabetes participants, 46 were colonized with S. aureus and 22 were colonized with MRSA. Of the 427 non-diabetes participants, 25 were colonized with S. aureus and 12 were colonized with MRSA. Men (odds ratio 0.45, 95% confidence interval 0.20-0.99, P = 0.047) were less likely to have S. aureus nasal colonization, and those with well-controlled blood glucose (odds ratio 2.04, 95% confidence interval 1.01-4.13, P = 0.047) among the diabetes population were more likely to have S. aureus nasal colonization. The proportion of multidrug-resistant S. aureus strains in the diabetes population (52.17%) was higher than that in the non-diabetes population (28.00%; χ2 = 3.848, P = 0.050). The most common clonal complex type and Staphylococcal chromosome cassette mec type of MRSA in diabetes population was clonal complex 5 (40.91%) and type IV (27.27%), respectively. The proportion of Panton-Valentine leukocidin gene in MRSA strains was 17.65%. There was great sequence type diversity in MRSA strains. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of MRSA in the community-based diabetes population was moderate, and the high proportions of multidrug-resistant S. aureus strains and diverse molecular characteristics in the diabetes population should be noticed.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the pooled prevalence and review the influencing factors of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) nasal colonization in Chinese children. METHODS: Articles published between January 2005 and October 2015 that studied prevalence or influencing factors of MRSA nasal colonization in Chinese children were retrieved from Chinese Biomedical Literature database (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database, Chinese VIP database, Chinese Wanfang database, Medline database and Ovid database. Prevalence and influencing factors were analyzed by STATA 13.1. RESULTS: Thirteen articles were included. The overall prevalence of MRSA nasal colonization was 4.4% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.027-0.062). With an MRSA prevalence of 3.9% (95% CI: 0.018-0.061) in healthy children and 5.8% (95% CI: 0.025-0.092) in children with underlying medical conditions. Children recruited in the hospitals presented MRSA prevalence of 6.4% (95% CI: 0.037-0.091), which was higher than those recruited in the communities [2.7% (95% CI: 0.012-0.043)]. A number of influencing factors for MRSA nasal colonization were noted in three eligible studies: gender (male vs female; OR: 0.67; 95% CI: 0.55-0.82), younger age (OR: 2.98; 95% CI: 1.31-6.96 and OR: 1.56; 95% CI: 1.21-2.00), attending day care centers (OR: 2.97; 95% CI: 1.28-6.76), having infectious diseases (OR: 2.31; 95% CI: 1.10-4.52), using antibiotics (OR: 2.77; 95% CI: 1.45-5.05), residing in northern Taiwan (OR: 1.41; 95% CI: 1.15-1.71), passive smoking (OR: 1.30; 95% CI: 1.02-1.63), and pneumococcal vaccination (OR: 1.22; 95% CI: 1.01-1.48). CONCLUSIONS: Children could act as reservoirs of MRSA transmissions. Hospitals remained the most frequent microorganism-circulated settings. More MRSA infection control strategies are required to prevent the dissemination among children.

Starch, with properties of eco-friendliness and abundance, is one of the most important natural polymers. Starch-based hydrogels were investigated as carriers of carbendazim to combine controlled-release and water absorption (WA). Three carbendazim-loaded hydrogels (CLHs) with different WA capacities were prepared by solution polymerization. The CLHs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and liquid-chromatography mass-spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Release kinetics of CLHs was investigated using (14)C-labeling method. The diffusion parameters of CLHs were 0.47, 0.57 and 0.81 in deionized H2O (ddH2O). WA affected release profile significantly, the release longevity reaching 240 h when WA was 800 g/g in ddH2O. Solution pH influenced release profiles and the lowest release rate occurred in the lowest pH. Addition of CLH (1.3g/kg soil) markedly increased water-holding capacity (WHC) of soil by 8.2%. The study indicated that starch-based CLH was a good controlled-release agent for carbendazim and water absorbent for soil.

Fate characteristics of the four stereoisomers of paichongding [IPP, 1-((6-chloropyridin-3-yl)methyl)-7-methyl-8-nitro-5-propoxy-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydroimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine] in aerobic sterilized and nonsterilized fluvio-marine yellow loamy soil were investigated using a (14)C tracer technique combined with HPLC and LC-MS/MS. Results showed that the mineralization and bound residue (nonsterile/sterilized soil, % of applied amount) of four stereoisomers of IPP were 1.76-6.10/0.33-0.82 and 12.01-31.20/6.58-20.81 at 100 days after treatment. Seven and five incomplete intermediates of IPP were detected in nonsterilized and sterilized soil, respectively, and a possible degradation pathway was proposed. Degradation mainly occurred on the tetrahydropyridine ring, including oxidation and elimination of the methyl, propyl, and nitro groups. All of these results suggest that soil microbial activity greatly contributes to the epimeride-selective mineralization, formation of bound residue, and degradation of IPP in loamy soil. The identified transformation intermediates could be used for further study on their toxicity to target and nontarget species.
