RESUMEN

A study was conducted to estimate the hematological values of captive white-rumped vultures (Gyps bengalensis) in Nepal. Blood samples were collected from 23 adults and 14 juvenile captive white-rumped vultures during their annual health examinations at the Vulture Conservation and Breeding Center, Kasara, Chitwan, Nepal. Of 23 adults, 12 (52%) were male and 11 (48%) were females, whereas the sex of the 14 juveniles was undifferentiated. The mean (± SD) values for the adult birds were estimated as red blood cell count (2.86 ± 1.01 × 106/µL), white blood cell count (14.75 ± 6.01 × 103/µL, hemoglobin concentration (12.86 ± 1.67 g/dL), and packed cell volume (44.69 ± 3.63%). The mean (± SD) values for the juvenile vultures were estimated as red blood cell count (1.98 ± 0.5 × 106/µL), white blood cell count (16.73 ± 7.11 × 103/µL), hemoglobin concentration (11.57 ± 0.39 g/dL), and packed cell volume (44.5 ± 2.67%). There were no significant differences between the mean values of the hematological parameters based on the age or sex of vultures.

INTRODUCTION: Giant urinary bladder stones are rare phenomenon which is associated with chronic urinary infections, intravesical foreign bodies, urethral strictures, bladder diverticula etc. CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old man presented with complaints of severe dysuria, urgency, frequency, suprapubic pain, and pollakuria for the last ten years. Physical examination revealed a palpable suprapubic mass with no obvious flank masses. Ultrasonography of the abdomen and pelvis revealed right-sided gross hydroureteronephrosis and thinning of renal parenchyma along with a hyperechoic structure with posterior acoustic shadowing was noted in the region of the urinary bladder, suggesting a vesical calculus. Plain CT of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder (KUB) confirmed right nephrolithiasis in lower poly calyx and a large vesical calculus (10.6 cm × 8.6 cm x8.8 cm, +1110 HU). Open cystolithotomy with a right-sided double-J "DJ" stent insertion was performed. Post-operative period went uneventful. DISCUSSION: Giant bladder stones are extremely rare, often resulting from neglected symptoms in otherwise normal individuals. They typically develop over several years and present with symptoms like severe dysuria, urgency, frequency, supra-pubic pain, and hematuria. Diagnosis is made by cystoscopy, ultrasonography and CT-KUB. Treatment includes intracorporeal cystolithotripsy using a laser, ultrasonic lithotripter, or pneumatic lithotripter, depending on availability. Endourologic procedures have been safer and more cost-effective for bladder stones, however, open removal is the treatment of choice for giant bladder stones. CONCLUSION: Open cystolithotomy can be performed to remove giant bladder stone with near 100 % stone removal rate.

Habitat suitability is crucial to ensure the long-term persistence of species and can be identified based on relationships between species occurrences and underlying abiotic and biotic factors. We identified potential nesting habitat for the Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus) in Nepal using ecological niche modeling with climatic variables. We estimated the currently suitable nesting habitat for Egyptian vulture in Nepal at 38,204 km2. We found a high probability of suitable nesting habitat on east-facing aspects, and the probability of a suitable nesting habitat was greater in more mountainous areas, particularly in central and western regions of Nepal. Precipitation was a major factor for predicting probability of the presence of nest sites for Egyptian vultures. After identifying potentially suitable habitat, we identified environmental factors affecting landscape-level suitable nesting habitat for Egyptian vultures using generalized linear models. For Egyptian vultures, sites near forests and human settlements were most suitable for nesting, roosting, and foraging, especially in central and western Nepal. Based on potentially suitable nesting habitat and previous work on Egyptian vulture foraging and roosting habitat, we recommend protecting forests near water sources and open areas for their long-term conservation.

Monkeypox (Mpox) is a contagious illness that is caused by the monkeypox virus, which is part of the same family of viruses as variola, vaccinia, and cowpox. It was first detected in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1970 and has since caused sporadic cases and outbreaks in a few countries in West and Central Africa. In July 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public-health emergency of international concern due to the unprecedented global spread of the disease. Despite breakthroughs in medical treatments, vaccines, and diagnostics, diseases like monkeypox still cause death and suffering around the world and have a heavy economic impact. The 85,189 reported cases of Mpox as of 29 January 2023 have raised alarm bells. Vaccines for the vaccinia virus can protect against monkeypox, but these immunizations were stopped after smallpox was eradicated. There are, however, treatments available once the illness has taken hold. During the 2022 outbreak, most cases occurred among men who had sex with men, and there was a range of 7-10 days between exposure and the onset of symptoms. Three vaccines are currently used against the Monkeypox virus. Two of these vaccines were initially developed for smallpox, and the third is specifically designed for biological-terrorism protection. The first vaccine is an attenuated, nonreplicating smallpox vaccine that can also be used for immunocompromised individuals, marketed under different names in different regions. The second vaccine, ACAM2000, is a recombinant second-generation vaccine initially developed for smallpox. It is recommended for use in preventing monkeypox infection but is not recommended for individuals with certain health conditions or during pregnancy. The third vaccine, LC16m8, is a licensed attenuated smallpox vaccine designed to lack the B5R envelope-protein gene to reduce neurotoxicity. It generates neutralizing antibodies to multiple poxviruses and broad T-cell responses. The immune response takes 14 days after the second dose of the first two vaccines and 4 weeks after the ACAM2000 dose for maximal immunity development. The efficacy of these vaccines in the current outbreak of monkeypox is uncertain. Adverse events have been reported, and a next generation of safer and specific vaccines is needed. Although some experts claim that developing vaccines with a large spectrum of specificity can be advantageous, epitope-focused immunogens are often more effective in enhancing neutralization.

Due to an abundance and diversity of vultures, Nepal is one of the most important countries for vulture conservation. Within Nepal, the Pokhara Valley is especially significant. We examine the distribution of vultures within the Pokhara Valley by conducting counts at 11 potential feeding or roosting sites using point count method. We further surveyed people of the valley regarding their perception of vulture ecology and conservation, knowledge of diclofenac use within the valley, and burial of livestock carcasses. We detected eight species of vultures, four of which are currently threatened with extinction. White-rumped vulture Gyps bengalensis, Egyptian vulture Nephron percnopterus, and Himalayan vulture G. himalayensis were the most abundant. Almost all respondents (98%) had sighted the vultures in the wild. Formally educated respondents reported seeing vultures' slightly more than nonformally educated respondents. Fifty-eight percent respondents suspected habitat loss was the major threat for the vulture population decline in Pokhara Valley, and 97% respondents were not aware of any diclofenac use. The knowledge of vultures in people with different age groups suggests a more awareness programs are needed for local people, especially those who carry out animal husbandry and provide livestock to the vulture restaurant.
