RESUMEN

The objective of this randomized controlled trial was to assess the relative merits of offering unweaned calves 3 different types of diets to meet energy and water deficits that can occur during journeys. Six young unweaned male Holstein calves were randomly selected from within 2 body weight ranges (median 48 and 42 kg) from each of 29 loads (total n = 174 calves) transported from an auction market or a collection center to a calf sorting center before transport to a veal unit. The calves were then randomly allocated to one of 3 dietary treatments (n = 58 calves/dietary treatment). They were offered either a milk replacer diet (M), a glucose-electrolyte diet (G) or a whey-based diet with added electrolytes (W). The ability of these diets to provide sufficient nutrient energy to restore vigor, avoid hypoglycaemia and clinical signs of dehydration without increasing the risk of diarrhea was assessed. A clinical assessment of dehydration, health and vigor was made, and the calves were blood sampled before feeding, then 2 h and 4 h after feeding. The plasma glucose concentration was increased 2 h and 4 h after feeding the M and W diets. The increases in plasma glucose concentration were greater 2 and 4 h after (a) feeding the M than after the W diet and (b) feeding the M and W diets than after the G diet. Back-transformed means and 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) for the ratio of the plasma glucose concentration at 4 h compared with 0 h for the milk replacer, glucose-electrolytes and whey-based diets were 1.2 mM CI 1.21, 1.35; 0.95 mM CI 0.92, 0.97; and 1.09 mM CI 1.06, 1.14, respectively. There was no effect of diet on the change in serum total protein concentration between before feeding and 2 and 4 h after feeding. The serum osmolality was lower 2 h after feeding the G diet. The fall in serum osmolality was greater 2 h after feeding the G diet than after feeding the M and W diets. The changes in the serum osmolality between before feeding and 2 h after feeding for the milk replacer, glucose-electrolytes and whey-based diets were -0.68 mosmol CI -3.27, 1.91; -5.23 mosmol CI -7.82, and -2.64; -0.13 mosmol CI -2.77, 2.51, respectively. The diet offered at the sorting center had no effect on subsequent growth on the veal rearing farm between arrival and slaughter (milk replacer 1.22 kg/d, CI 1.17, 1.28; glucose-electrolyte diet 1.23 kg/d. CI 1.18, 1.28; whey-based diet 1.28 kg/d CI 1.23, 1.33). The M diet provided the calves with nutrients and water to replace energy and water deficits that had accumulated before arrival at the sorting center, and these dietary benefits were still apparent 4 h after feeding. The benefits of the W diet were similar to those of the M diet, but the M diet was better able to assist the calves in maintaining their plasma glucose concentration 4 h after feeding than the W diet. The G diet had some short-term benefits in providing energy and assistance to the calves to recover from dehydration, as indicated by a decrease in serum osmolality. However, the G diet was clearly inferior to the M and W diets in providing sufficient energy to assist the calves in recovering from the effects of transport and fasting. During the 4-h after feeding, no adverse effects of offering the calves the M or W diets were observed. The benefits of the W diet in replacing energy and water deficits were similar to those of the M diet, but the M diet was better able to assist the calves in maintaining their blood glucose concentration 4 h after feeding than the W diet.

The objective of this cross-sectional study was to estimate the validity of laboratory culture, Petrifilm and Tri-Plate on-farm culture systems, and luminometry to correctly identify IMI at dry-off in dairy cows, considering all tests as imperfect. From September 2020 until December 2021, we collected composite milk samples from cows before dry-off and divided them into 4 aliquots for the luminometry test, the Petrifilm (aerobic count), the Tri-Plate, and the laboratory culture. While we assessed multiple thresholds of relative light units (RLU) for the luminometry, we used thresholds of ≥100 cfu/mL for the laboratory culture, ≥ 50 cfu/mL for the Petrifilm, and ≥1 cfu for the Tri-Plate. We fitted Bayesian latent class analysis (LCA) models to estimate the sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) for each test to identify IMI, with 95% credibility interval (BCI). Using different prevalence measures (0.30, 0.50, and 0.70), we calculated the predictive values (PV) and misclassification cost terms (MCT) at different false-negative to false-positive ratios (FN:FP). A total of 333 cows were enrolled in the study from one commercial Holstein herd. The validity of the luminometry was poor for all thresholds, with Se of 0.51 (95% BCI = 0.43-0.59) and Sp of 0.38 (95% BCI = 0.26-0.50) when using a threshold of ≥150 RLU. The laboratory culture had Se of 0.93 (95% BCI = 0.85-0.98) and Sp of 0.69 (95% BCI = 0.49-0.89), the Petrifilm had Se of 0.91 (95% BCI = 0.80-0.98) and Sp of 0.71 (95% BCI = 0.51-0.90), and the Tri-Plate had Se of 0.65 (95% BCI = 0.53-0.82) and Sp of 0.85 (95% BCI = 0.66-0.97). Bacteriological tests had good PVs, with comparable positive PV for all 3 tests, but lower negative PV for the Tri-Plate compared with the laboratory culture and the Petrifilm. For a prevalence of IMI of 0.30, all 3 tests had similar MCT, but for prevalence of 0.50 and 0.70, the Tri-Plate had higher MCT in scenarios where leaving a cow with IMI untreated is considered to have greater detrimental impacts than treating a healthy cow (i.e., FN:FP of 3:1). Our results showed that the bacteriological tests have adequate validity to diagnose IMI at dry-off, but the luminometry does not. We concluded that, while luminometry is not useful to identify IMI at dry-off, the Petrifilm and Tri-Plate tests performed similarly to the laboratory culture, depending on the prevalence and the importance of the FP and FN results.

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a common and complex disease process in calves. Subclinical disease exists and early detection can be challenging due to inconsistent or nonexistent clinical signs. Thoracic ultrasonography (TUS) is often used and has the potential to improve the identification of respiratory diseases. Combining systematic TUS with clinical examination allows distinguishing BRD, including upper respiratory tract disease (clinical signs of respiratory disease, but no significant lung consolidation), clinical pneumonia (clinical signs of respiratory disease along with lung consolidations), and subclinical pneumonia (no clinical signs, but lung consolidations). Data on subclinical pneumonia are scarce, particularly outside of the North American or European contexts similar to Iran in west Asia with a dry and semi-arid climate and intensive breeding systems similar to North America which breeding calves begin in individual boxes, then moving to group pens, and finally to free stall or open shed housing systems. The first objective of this longitudinal study was to use weekly ultrasonography to monitor calves from birth until weaning in an Iranian dairy herd. The second objective was to look for any association between individual lung consolidation episode or cumulative consolidation episodes on preweaning growth. Thoracic ultrasonography was performed on calves (n = 221) weekly from birth to weaning (8 wk), and scanning occasions for each calf were equally distributed with 1-wk intervals (using consolidation threshold ≥3 cm as a specific lung consolidation definition, and ≥1 cm as a more sensitive threshold). Calf body weights were recorded using a weight tape. Other information recorded were transfer of passive immunity (TPI) using serum Brix (%) ≥8.4% as adequate TPI within the first week after birth and the treatment history of the calves. The main strategy for modeling was to determine how long-term lung consolidation affects average daily gain (ADG) during the preweaning period. A linear model was used to determine the effect of the number of weeks with consolidation on ADG. Using consolidation threshold of ≥3 cm, the mean (±SD) of total ADG for calves with no consolidation episode, 1 consolidation episode, and 2 or more consolidation episodes were 0.45 (±0.10), 0.39 (±0.10), and 0.38 (±0.11) kg/d, respectively. In the final multivariable regression analysis model and based on consolidation threshold of ≥3 cm, calves with 1 and 2 or more consolidation episodes had significantly lower ADG ± standard error (SE) of 0.04 ± 0.02 kg/d, and 0.06 ± 0.02 kg/d, respectively compared with animals with no consolidation episode. A total of 20% of calves (46/229 calves that entered the study) were treated for respiratory disease based on clinical signs (based on farmer examination). The final model also included specific confounders related to ADG and their interactions with lung consolidation (TPI and BRD treatment). An overall of 86% of adequate TPI was obtained. Bovine respiratory disease treatment based on farmer diagnosis had a larger negative effect on preweaning ADG than ultrasonography-diagnosed consolidation episodes (lower ADG ± SE of 0.10 ± 0.03 kg/d). When using a more sensitive consolidation threshold (≥1 cm as consolidation), the number of weeks with consolidation was also negatively associated with the ADG in the multivariable linear regression model with significant difference of 0.05 ± 0.02 kg/d for nonconsolidated calves versus calves consolidated for 2 or more weeks and insignificant difference of 0.01 ± 0.02 kg/d for nonconsolidated calves versus calves with 1 consolidation episode.

Active infectious bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is an infection of the airways that needs to be diagnosed correctly so that appropriate treatment can be initiated. The simplest and most practical test to detect active BRD in dairy calves raised for veal is the detection and interpretation of clinical signs by producers or technicians. However, the clinical scoring system currently available for veal calves lacks sensitivity and specificity, contributing to economic losses and high use of antimicrobials. An accurate and reliable batch-level test to detect active BRD is essential to tailor antimicrobial use and reduce economic losses in veal calves. The objective of this study was therefore to develop and validate a new veal calf respiratory clinical scoring system (VcCRS), including reliable clinical signs (cough, ear droop or head tilt) and increased rectal temperature to detect active BRD in batches of veal calves housed individually, and to describe the accuracy of the scoring system for identifying batches of veal calves to treat. During 2017 to 2018, clinical examination, thoracic ultrasonography (TUS) and a haptoglobin concentration (Hap) were prospectively performed on 800 veal calves housed individually in Québec, Canada. Deep nasopharyngeal swabs were performed on 250 veal calves. A Bayesian latent class model accounting for imperfect accuracy of TUS and Hap was used to obtain weights for the clinical signs and develop the VcCRS. The VcCRS was then validated externally in 3 separate data sets. Finally, the applicability of the VcCRS at batch level was determined. We found that calves with 2 of the following findings-cough, unilateral or bilateral ear droop or head tilt, or increased rectal temperature ≥39.7°C-were considered positive and had a 31% chance of having active BRD. Without at least 2 of these 2 findings, a calf had a 100% chance of not having active BRD. At the batch level, we found that a batch with ≥3 positive calves among 10 calves sampled 2 wk after arrival at the fattening unit had a 94% chance of having an active BRD prevalence ≥10%. A batch with <3 positive calves had a 95% chance of not having an active BRD prevalence ≥10%. In this study, we developed a simple individual and batch-level score that is reliable across examiners and performs effectively in the detection of active BRD in veal calves. The implementation of this VcCRS in the veal calf industry would promote the elaboration of a protocol tailoring antimicrobial use.

Inadequate transfer of passive immunity (ITPI) in newborn dairy calves remains an important risk factor for mortality and morbidity. Most available studies are focused on calves delivered and raised on the same farms. This setting is far different from calves transported and commingled from different farms to be raised as veal or for other purposes. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to describe the association between ITPI and important health outcomes (mortality, bovine respiratory disease, and diarrhea) in multisource commingled dairy calves raised for veal or other purposes. We searched studies through CAB abstracts (via CAB direct), PubMed, and Web of Science (via ISI) databases until September 2, 2021. Observational studies and randomized trials written in English or French assessing ITPI association with any of the selected outcomes were included. Young dairy calves transported to commercial facilities and explicitly stated as being raised for veal production or not (then considered as "other") were our populations of interest. If raw or adjusted data were available for ≥5 studies for a given outcome of interest, then random effect meta-analysis models were used to investigate ITPI effects on this outcome. Nineteen studies were selected from 6,221 abstracts retrieved in the initial search. We observed significantly higher odds of mortality in calves with ITPI compared with those with successful transfer of passive immunity [odds ratio (OR) = 2.46; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.43-4.22, n = 8 studies]. Calves with ITPI had higher odds of diarrhea (OR = 3.03; 95% CI: 1.2-7.62, n = 7 studies). A significant publication bias toward publishing studies with positive results was found in studies reporting on bovine respiratory disease (n = 5 studies), which revealed nonsignificant associations after correction of publication bias (OR = 1.40; 95% CI: 0.77-2.6). Heterogeneity could not be thoroughly investigated for mortality and diarrhea due to the limited number of studies. Therefore, the pooled estimates of the random models should be interpreted with caution despite their robustness to sensitivity analyses. In this study, we also observed that multiple definitions for transfer of passive immunity and outcomes were used in the literature. Moreover, the raising system definition was often limited. There seems, therefore, to be a need for standardized definitions of these parameters, as well as a better description of systems used for multisource commingled dairy calves raised for veal production or other production purposes.

The objective of the present study was to quantify the relationships between prepartum nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations and the development of subsequent diseases or culling and to identify the optimal thresholds allowing identification of animals at high risk of developing postpartum diseases or being culled. A total of 1,299 Holstein cows from 50 commercial herds located around Saint-Hyacinthe (QC, Canada) were enrolled in this observational study. Blood samples were collected from enrolled cows between 1 and 14 d before calving for serum NEFA quantification. Data concerning postpartum diseases and culling were collected from computerized record systems. The association between prepartum NEFA concentrations and postpartum diseases and culling was quantified using generalized linear mixed models, accounting for parity, season, week of sampling, and herd. Optimal NEFA thresholds were evaluated with receiver operator characteristic curves analysis for all diseases and then confirmed with generalized linear mixed models, considering NEFA as a categorical variable (high or low). Prepartum serum NEFA concentrations were associated with diseases diagnosed during the first 30 d in milk (DIM) and culling within the first 50 DIM. The optimal NEFA threshold associated with diseases was ≥290 µmol/L for retained placenta, ≥300 µmol/L for metritis and abomasal displacement, and ≥280 µmol/L for clinical mastitis and hyperketonemia. The level associated with the occurrence of at least one of these diseases in the first 30 DIM was ≥280 µmol/L, but it was ≥260 µmol/L for culling in the first 50 DIM. No relationship was found between NEFA concentrations and reproductive tract diseases (purulent vaginal discharge or cytological endometritis) or subclinical intramammary infection. Despite the strong relationship between prepartum NEFA concentrations and many diseases, the NEFA optimal threshold accuracy found in our study was low. In conclusion, our results demonstrate a relationship between NEFA concentrations in the 14-d period before calving and the subsequent development of diseases and culling. Prepartum NEFA concentrations thresholds between ≥260 and 300 µmol/L appear to be a strategic choice. However, considering the low accuracy, their use at the cow level should be performed with caution.

Calves born on Eastern Canadian dairy farms that are not kept in the herds are traditionally sold through auction markets and are raised for meat purposes such as veal calves. Since February 2020, a new Canadian federal regulation has forbidden calves <9 d old to be sold through auction markets. However, in the absence of a real-time birth registry consultation system, it would be of interest to look for predictors that could be associated with age to allow identification of calves too young to be transported. In the current retrospective cross-sectional study, 1,178 calves with a declared birth date (411 calves aged <9 d old; 34.9%) were assessed in 2 large Québec auction sites. Easy-to-record covariates [body weight (BW), breed phenotype, and presence of an umbilical cord remnant] as well as other clinical signs (umbilical swelling, enlargement, umbilical pain, wet umbilicus, skin tent, sunken eyes, ocular and nasal secretion, and hide cleanliness) were assessed. Two logistic regression models using age as a dichotomous dependent variable (<9 d old vs ≥9 d old) were built. The first model (model 1) considered all covariates, which were selected after univariable analyses and a backward stepwise selection process, whereas a more pragmatic model (model 2) only included the 3 easy-to-record variables (i.e., BW, breed, umbilical cord). Both models had similar accuracy to detect calves <9 d old (sensitivity of 38.4 and 37.5%, and specificity of 85.7 and 84.6% for model 1 and 2, respectively). Model 2 was subsequently more specifically studied as it employs a faster and easier assessment. Decision thresholds were tested for their robustness based on misclassification cost term (MCT) analysis with various prevalence of calves <9 d old and various costs of false-negative:false-positive ratio. Despite statistical significance, model accuracy, even if refined with MCT analysis, was limited at the individual level, showing the limits of using physical signs and BW or their combination as a reliable proxy of age. The sensitivity of these models to find calves <9 d old was not to be used for monitoring compliance with the Canadian federal regulation. The relatively high model specificity may help to use this model as a rule-in test (i.e., targeting positive calves for further investigation) rather than a rule-out test (due to its low sensitivity).

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is one of the most common calfhood diseases in dairy cattle. Unfortunately, published data on the short- and long-term effects of calfhood BRD on health and performance are scarce and, when available, often conflicting and uncertain. The objective of this study was therefore to review the scientific literature on the effects of calfhood BRD on health and performance of dairy cattle and summarize the research findings using a meta-analysis approach. The systematic review and meta-analysis were performed following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. PubMed and CAB Abstract databases were screened for relevant studies that were published in English (until February 3, 2020). Only studies reporting naturally occurring BRD cases from birth to 12 mo of age in dairy calves in Europe and North America were considered eligible. Both observational studies and randomized controlled trials were included. Random-effect meta-analysis models were used to quantify the effect of BRD on outcomes for which at least 5 studies reported a numeric estimation of the effect of BRD. From an initial pool of 525 references, 27 full-text articles with original data were included in the manuscript. Meta-analysis models were prepared for 4 outcomes: odds of mortality (n = 7 studies), odds of herd removal before first calving (n = 5 studies), average daily gain (n = 10 studies), and milk production during first lactation (n = 5 studies). In these models, heifers diagnosed with BRD during calfhood had 2.85 times higher odds of dying (95% confidence interval: 1.22 to 6.69) and 2.30 times higher odds of herd removal (i.e., dead, culled, or sold) before the first calving (95% confidence interval: 1.75 to 3.03) compared with heifers not diagnosed with this condition. Heifers experiencing calfhood BRD also had an average daily gain reduced by 0.067 kg/d (95% confidence interval: -0.099 to -0.034) and they produced 121.2 kg (95% confidence interval: -184.9 to -57.5) less milk during their first lactation. Other health and performance outcomes, such as age at first calving and odds of not finishing the first lactation, were also investigated but not summarized using a meta-analysis approach. Pooled estimates obtained in the present study may provide more accurate estimates of the overall economic losses associated with calfhood BRD in dairy cattle.

In dairy calves raised for veal, typical clinical signs of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) are ocular discharge, nasal discharge, ear droop or head tilt, abnormal respiration, cough, and increased rectal temperature. Despite the existence of several clinical scoring systems, there are few studies on the variability of human recognition of individual BRD clinical signs. The objective of this study was therefore to assess the inter-rater agreement of BRD clinical signs in veal calves. We hypothesized that BRD clinical signs were not detected equally between veterinarians, technicians, and producers of the veal industry and that some clinical signs have higher inter-rater agreement than others. During 2017-2018, we prospectively recorded 524 videos of physical examinations of random veal calves from 48 different batches in Québec, Canada. A researcher, not involved in the inter-rater assessment, classified each video as presence/absence of each BRD clinical sign except rectal temperature. For each of the 5 clinical signs, 15 videos with and 15 videos without the clinical signs were randomly selected to avoid kappa paradoxes. Those 30 videos were then presented in a random order to experienced raters of BRD in veal calves: 6 veterinarians, 6 technicians, and 6 producers. The raters assessed the clinical signs using scores based on the Wisconsin and California scoring system with modifications (0 = absent, 1 = mild, 2 = moderate, 3 = severe for nasal discharge, ocular discharge, and ear droop or head tilt; and 0 = absent, 1 = moderate, 2 = severe for abnormal respiration and induced cough). We used median percentage agreement (Pa), median Cohen's kappa (κ), and Gwet's agreement coefficient 1 (AC1) to assess inter-rater agreement. The effect of scale combination was also tested to determine the optimal combination (4-scale 0/1/2/3 vs. 3-scale 0/1/2 vs. 2-scale 0/1,2,3; 0,1/2,3; or 0/1,2). The differences of inter-rater agreement between veterinarians, technicians, and producers were estimated by a Wilcoxon rank-sum test. The 2-scale combination (0,1/2,3 or 0/1,2) had the highest inter-rater agreement for all clinical signs. With this combination, induced cough was the clinical sign with the highest inter-rater agreement (Pa = 0.93; κ = 0.79; AC1 = 0.87) and abnormal respiration was the sign with the lowest inter-rater agreement (Pa = 0.77; κ = 0.20; AC1 = 0.74). According to Pa and AC1 values, the 2-scale inter-rater agreement of the 5 clinical signs was good (value > 0.6). According to κ, only ear droop or head tilt and induced cough had a substantial 2-scale inter-rater agreement (κ > 0.6). In general, the 2-scale inter-rater agreement was better among veterinarians than among technicians and producers, except for the ear droop/head tilt, where agreement was better among producers. We concluded that with severity scores assessed on a scale of 2 (0,1/2,3 or 0/1,2), the inter-rater agreement of BRD clinical signs was variable according to the sign in veal calves. BRD clinical signs were not detected equally between veterinarians, technicians, and producers of the veal industry. Future research could determine if this discrepancy could be improved by standardization training.

RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to identify the calf-level colostrum management practices associated with an adequate transfer of passive immunity (TPI; defined as serum Brix refractance ≥8.4% in the first week of life) in small-sized herds. A total of 818 calves from 61 commercial Holstein dairy farms were included in this observational cross-sectional study. For each calf, sex, colostrum delivery method, colostrum volume fed at first meal, and time to first feeding (delay between birth and first colostrum meal) were noted. Blood and colostrum samples were collected to estimate the serum and colostrum quality using Brix refractometry. To quantify the level of bacterial contamination in colostrum samples, total bacteria count and total coliform count (TCC) were measured using the Petrifilm (3M, St. Paul, MN) culture system. In this study, 68% of calves had an adequate TPI (≥8.4%). For data distribution, the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles were 1.3, 2.8, and 3.3 L for the colostrum volume fed at the first meal; 20.9, 23.5, and 26.5% Brix; and 1.1, 3.1, and 6.5 h for the time to first feeding of colostrum, respectively. The odds of adequate TPI were 2.6 times higher in calves receiving ≥2.5 L colostrum at their first meal, 2.9 times higher in calves receiving colostrum with ≥24.5% Brix, and 1.6 times higher in calves receiving colostrum within 3 h after birth, than in calves not meeting these criteria. In the present study, median bacterial contamination distribution (interquartile range) in the first colostrum meal was 14,000 cfu/mL (3,000-83,000 cfu/mL) for total bacteria count, and 0 cfu/mL (0-1,000 cfu/mL) for TCC. Total bacteria count and TCC were not associated with the odds of adequate TPI in the final model. Overall, these results suggest that specific calf-level colostrum management practices are associated with adequate TPI in small- to medium-sized dairy herds.

The objective of this study was to identify herd-level colostrum management factors associated with the adequate transfer of passive immunity (TPI; defined as serum Brix refractance ≥8.4% in the first week of life). A total of 59 commercial Holstein dairy farms were included in this observational cross-sectional study. In every participating herd, a minimum of 14 Holstein calves were sampled to measure their TPI using a digital Brix refractometer. Colostrum samples fed to each of these calves were collected to estimate IgG concentration (colostrum quality) using a digital Brix refractometer and bacterial contamination using the Petrifilm (3M, St. Paul, MN) culture system. Dairy producers completed a questionnaire on colostrum management to assess on-farm practices. The study outcome was the prevalence of adequate TPI calculated based on the proportion of adequate TPI (defined with an individual threshold ≥8.4% Brix) on the total samples tested within each herd. According to the threshold determined in a previous study investigating the influencing colostrum management factors to achieve adequate TPI at the calf level, the prevalence of an adequate colostrum volume fed at first meal (≥2.5 L), the prevalence of adequate colostrum quality (≥24.5% Brix), the prevalence of an adequate time to first feeding (delay between birth and the first colostrum meal, ≤3 h), the prevalence of low aerobic bacterial contamination (≤20,000 cfu/mL), the prevalence of low coliform contamination (≤1,000 cfu/mL), and the prevalence of females were calculated. The herd-level prevalence of adequate TPI ranged from 24% to 100%, with a median of 68%. The median herd prevalences of an adequate colostrum volume fed at first meal, of adequate colostrum quality, of an adequate time to first feeding, of low aerobic bacterial contamination, of low coliform contamination, and of females, were 71, 42, 41, 64, 88, and 61%, respectively. In the final model, the prevalence of adequate TPI was associated with the prevalence of an adequate colostrum volume fed at first meal and the prevalence of an adequate time to first feeding. In summary, management practices varied greatly between farms and influenced the prevalence of adequate TPI.

Dairy calves not kept for replacement are sold at young age in Québec auction markets for white and grain-fed veal calf production. The province of Québec produces 80% of the Canadian veal meat, but little information is available on the factors associated with the calves' price per crude weight (Can$/kg; Can$1 = US$0.78 at time of writing). The characteristics of calves sold in Québec auction markets from 12 complete years (2008-2019) were retrospectively studied. The calves' weight, breed and sex, the year and season of sale, the auction site, as well as the estimated distance traveled between the farm of origin and the auction site were analyzed as potential covariates associated with calf price. Two multivariable logistic models associated with low sale value (below the 10th or the 25th percentile of the day price) and 2 models associated with good sale characteristics (above the 50th or the 75th percentile of the day price) were built. The median distance between the farm and the auction site was 52 km (interquartile range: 30-95 km). Only 5% of calves traveled distances greater than 220 km. The weight, breed, sex, and auction sites explained most of the variability in the different models. Distance traveled and multiple interactions were also significantly associated with the outcomes. Calves with body weight from 48 to <56 kg were sold in higher percentiles of the day than lighter or heavier calves. Beef-crossed calves had better sale prices than Holstein, whereas colored dairy calves had lower sale characteristics than both Holstein and beef-crossed calves. The effect of distance traveled was complex, varying depending on the model and interactions, and explained a small portion of the total deviance in every model. Calves traveling from distances ≥110 km had lower sale characteristics in summer and fall in the different studied models. This study gives relevant insights on calves' characteristics associated with good versus low sale prices in Québec auction markets.

This study estimates the accuracy of the focused lung ultrasound (FLUS) compared with systematic thoracic ultrasonography (TUS) as the reference test for diagnosing pneumonia in pre- and postweaned dairy calves. One hundred thirty-five Holstein Friesian calves, aged between 1 to 6 mo were enrolled and were kept in the same pen with one or more animals showing signs of bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC). One operator performed FLUS on each calf, and then a second, blinded operator performed TUS on the same calf. For the FLUS, we only scanned the lung lobes that are most frequently affected during BRDC and are thus easier to detect, such as the caudal aspect of the cranial lobe of the left lung (fifth and fourth left intercostal spaces; ICS), the middle lobe of the right lung (fifth right ICS), and the caudal aspect of the cranial lobe of the right lung (fourth right ICS). Pneumonia was diagnosed when a calf had a minimum of one small lobular lung lesion that was at least 1 cm deep within a normally aerated lobe (TUS score of ≥2). Diagnostic accuracy indexes of the FLUS were calculated using TUS as the gold standard. The McNemar test was performed to evaluate the differences between the 2 techniques. In addition, an intertest agreement was assessed using the weighted kappa test. A total of 76 out of 135 calves had a TUS score of ≥2 and were therefore considered to be affected by BRDC. The FLUS had a sensitivity of 81.6% (95% CI = 71.0-89.5%), specificity = 100% (95% CI = 93.9-100%), positive predictive value was 100%, negative predictive value was 96.6% (95% CI = 94.7---97.9%), and accuracy was 97% (95% CI = 92.6-99.2%). The McNemar test highlighted a difference of 10.3% between the FLUS and TUS. The agreement between the TUS and FLUS was substantial (weighted kappa test 0.78). Although FLUS shows some limitations in diagnosing lung lesions associated with BRDC compared with the systematic approach, this study shows that the focused method could be used as an additional tool for evaluating consolidation, especially when examining a large number of postweaned dairy calves.

The objective of this study was to validate the diagnostic accuracy of the Petrifilm culture system (3M, St. Paul, MN) for identifying colostrum with excessive bacterial contamination. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted between October 2015 and February 2016. Two colostrum aliquots were collected during the first meal of 332 calves (33 commercial Holstein dairy farms) in Quebec, Canada. One aliquot per calf was used to quantify the total bacteria count and the total coliform count using standard bacteriological laboratory testing (reference test). These results were dichotomized to identify colostrum with excessive bacterial contamination [aerobic count plate (AC) >100,000 cfu/mL; coliform count plate (CC) >10,000 cfu/mL]. The Petrifilm system was used to quantify both aerobic and coliform contamination of the other colostrum aliquot from each calf. As such, AC and CC were used according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic curve of AC and CC compared with the laboratory were 0.83, and 0.95, respectively. Using the optimal threshold of >24,000 cfu/mL for AC results, the Petrifilm system had a sensitivity (Se) of 69%, specificity (Sp) of 86%, and a kappa value of 0.54. Using the optimal threshold of >4,000 cfu/mL for CC results, the Petrifilm system had a Se of 93%, Sp of 90%, and kappa value of 0.64. Overall, these results suggest that the Petrifilm system is an appropriate alternative for identifying colostrum with excessive bacterial contamination.

Although future production of dairy goats is influenced by kid-rearing practices, little is known regarding which practices maximize kid growth, welfare, and future production success. The objectives of this survey study were to (1) identify common rearing practices of Canadian commercial dairy goat farms and evaluate their associations with 6 farm performance indicators and (2) determine if farms could be grouped by management style on the basis of the 6 performance indicators and compare rearing practices common across the different groups. A survey was sent by post or electronic media to reach dairy goat producers across Canada. The questionnaire contained 70 questions on the following areas of kid rearing: kidding management, care of newborn, colostrum management, milk and solid feeding in the preweaning period, health management, disbudding, housing conditions, weaning strategies, record keeping and growth monitoring, and farm performance data. Performance indicators, calculated on self-reported data, were 305-d milk production, preweaning mortality rate, diarrhea and respiratory disease prevalence, average daily gain from birth to weaning, herd milk production, and replacement rate. A total of 175 questionnaires were returned. After applying inclusion criteria, including herd size (≥40 goats) and completeness of surveys, 104 respondents from Ontario (n = 72, 69%), Québec (n = 23, 22%), and the Western provinces (n = 9, 9%) were retained for analysis, representing 29% of all Canadian producers. Farm sizes ranged from 42 to 2,500 (median = 190) goats. A large amount of variation in rearing practices and farm performance was found between farms. Colostrum and milk feeding management were found to be associated with all performance indicators except for kid respiratory disease prevalence, with timing of colostrum delivery and feeding method accounting for most the associations within each of the 2 areas. Replacement rate was mostly affected by whether or not kids were reared with their dam. Herds surveyed in the study could successfully be divided into 3 distinct groups (production-focused, longevity-focused, and low performance), representing different management styles on the basis of farm self-reported performance levels. Rearing practices found to be associated with higher farm performance could be targeted by advisory services to help improve management practices on Canadian dairy goat farms.

Feeding high-quality colostrum is essential for calf health and future productivity. Therefore, accurate assessment of colostrum quality is a key component of dairy farm management plans. Direct and indirect methods are available for assessment of colostrum quality; however, the indirect methods are rapid, inexpensive, and can be performed under field settings. A hierarchical latent class model fit within a Bayesian framework was used to estimate the sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) of the radial immunodiffusion (RID) assay, transmission infrared (TIR) spectroscopy, and digital Brix refractometer for the assessment of low-quality bovine colostrum in Atlantic Canada dairy herds. The secondary objective of the study was to describe the distribution of herd prevalence of low-quality colostrum. Colostrum quality of 591 samples from 42 commercial Holstein dairy herds in 4 Atlantic Canada provinces was assessed using RID, TIR spectroscopy, and digital Brix refractometer. The accuracy of all tests at different Brix value thresholds was estimated using Bayesian latent class models to obtain posterior estimates [medians and 95% Bayesian credibility intervals (95% BCI)] for each parameter. Using a threshold of <23% for digital Brix refractometer and <50 g/L for RID and TIR spectroscopy, median (95% BCI) Se estimates were 73.2 (68.4-77.7), 86.2 (80.6-91.0), and 91.9% (89.0-94.2), respectively. Median (95% BCI) Sp estimates were 85.2% (81.0-88.9) for digital Brix refractometer, 99.4% (97.0-100) for RID, and 90.7% (87.8-93.2) for TIR spectroscopy. Median (95% BCI) within-herd low-quality colostrum prevalence was estimated at 32.5% (27.9-37.4). In conclusion, using digital Brix refractometer at a Brix threshold of <23% could reduce feeding of low-quality colostrum to calves and improve colostrum and calf management practices in Atlantic Canada dairy herds. The TIR spectroscopy showed high Se in detection of low-quality colostrum. However, the RID assay, which is used as the reference test in several studies, showed limited Se for detection of low-quality colostrum.

The objective of this study was to quantify the efficacy of a second intrauterine cephapirin treatment administered 14 d after the initial one on subsequent reproductive performance of postpartum dairy cows affected by purulent vaginal discharge (PVD) or endometritis (ENDO). In total, 4,140 Holstein cows from 30 commercial herds were enrolled in a randomized clinical trial. At 36 (±7) d in milk, cows were examined using the Metricheck device to diagnose PVD. An endometrial cytology sample was also collected from each cow to perform a leukocyte esterase test for diagnosing ENDO. Diagnosis of PVD and ENDO was done cow-side. Cows diagnosed with PVD or ENDO were assigned to receive 1 of 2 treatments: (1) a single intrauterine cephapirin infusion (500 mg of cephapirin benzathin; Metricure, Merck Animal Health, Kirkland, QC, Canada) at the time of initial examination or (2) a single intrauterine infusion at the time of initial examination and a second one 14 d later. Subsequent reproductive and culling events were collected until 200 d in milk. Statistical analyses were performed using univariable and multivariable mixed logistic regression models. In cows affected by PVD, a second intrauterine cephapirin infusion increased the pregnancy risk at first insemination in comparison with cows that only received one treatment (28.0 vs. 38.8%). In cows affected by ENDO, a second treatment also increased the pregnancy risk at first insemination compared with cows that only received one treatment (30.3 vs. 39.2%). Overall, these results demonstrate that administering a second intrauterine cephapirin infusion 14 d after the initial treatment in postpartum cows affected by PVD or ENDO did improve their subsequent reproductive performance.

Dairy calves are at risk of being stressed when transported during the first week of life. A new Canadian federal rule will forbid transportation of calves younger than 9 d old to auction market. However, in the absence of reliable information to determine birth date, other indirect methods would be of interest. This study aimed to determine the prediction accuracy of body weight, Brix refractometry, and serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) activity for determining if a calf was not fit to be transported (i.e., <9 d old). For this purpose, we used 284 calves with a known birth date from a cross-sectional and a prospective cohort study. A logistic regression model was built based on multivariable analysis as well as a misclassification cost term analysis. Because of the collinearity between GGT activity and Brix value and lower discrimination of Brix value, the GGT activity was retained for the main model. The final logistic regression model contained body weight and log-transformed GGT activity value. The misclassifications of the logistic model was minimized using a model probability threshold ≥0.55 with a sensitivity of 70.4% and a specificity of 77.3%. This probability threshold was relatively robust for various prevalence and false negative to false positive cost ratios. The prediction accuracy of this model was moderate at the individual level, but is helpful in calves with a reasonable suspicion of being less than 9 d old.

The main objective of this study was to determine the accuracy of corpus luteum color flow Doppler ultrasonography (CLCFDU) to diagnose nonpregnant dairy cows 21 d after insemination. A secondary objective was to determine the accuracy of other indirect tests such as corpus luteum size and progesteronemia. Data from 1,632 Holstein cows (10 commercial herds) were used for the analysis in this prospective cohort study. The herds were visited weekly by a veterinarian and an animal health technician. During farm visits, cows were examined on d 21 after insemination using transrectal B-mode ultrasonography to quantify the presence and size of the corpus luteum. After identification of the corpus luteum, CLCFDU was performed and scored as D0, D1, D2, or D3 when 10% or less, between 11 and 30%, between 31 and 60%, or 61% or more of the corpus luteum surface was colored, respectively. A blood sample from coccygeal vessels was also collected to quantify progesteronemia. Farmers were blinded to these findings and no intervention was performed following examination. On d 32 after insemination, the cows were examined by the regular herd veterinarian using transrectal palpation and B-mode ultrasonography to determine whether the cows were pregnant or not (the reference test). Statistical analyses were conducted using 2 × 2 contingency tables. The apparent prevalence, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of CLCFDU for predicting nonpregnancy were 22.0, 36.6, 99.0, 98.1, and 52.0%, respectively, when using D0 only as the diagnostic criterion; they were 47.2, 76.4, 94.8, 93.5, and 73.8%, respectively, for D0+D1 criteria. The same measures for cows with a corpus luteum <15 mm were 8.0, 11.7, 97.5, 86.9, and 43.4%, respectively, and they were 51.9, 67.4, 70.4, 76.6, and 60.0%, respectively, for progesteronemia <1 ng/mL. The measures of accuracy of CLCFDU to identify nonpregnant cows on d 21 after insemination were high, and the apparent prevalence varied depending on the diagnostic criteria used. The measures of accuracy of corpus luteum size (<15 mm) for the same purpose were high; however, apparent prevalence was low. The measures of accuracy of progesteronemia (<1 ng/mL) were low. In conclusion, CLCFDU had excellent accuracy to diagnose nonpregnancy in dairy cows on d 21 after insemination.

The veal calf industry in Québec depends on young calves' availability at auction. Most of these calves come from dairy farms. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the effect of clinical anomalies and other calf characteristics on their sale price. A total of 3,820 calves from 5 different auctions were included in this observational study. The calves were examined by a veterinarian on arrival at the auction and screened for umbilical anomalies, the presence of nasal or eye discharge, joint abnormality, diarrhea, appearance of neonatal characteristics (compatible with age less than 1 wk), and general health status mainly based on the presence of depression and dehydration. The final multivariable model included 5 different variables (calf weight, sex, breed, abnormal joints, and general health status) and the interaction between sex and general health status. The presence of abnormal joints and unhealthy characteristics was negatively associated with standardized price. Female calves and mixed breed beef calves were positively associated with standardized price. Finally, the calves' weight was associated with standardized price in a quadratic fashion. Ongoing or previous diarrhea had no effects on standardized price. This study will be helpful for both dairy and veal producers for improving the quality of calves sold to the Québec auction market.
