RESUMEN

Coherent optical driving in quantum solids is emerging as a research frontier, with many reports of interesting non-equilibrium quantum phases1-4 and transient photo-induced functional phenomena such as ferroelectricity5,6, magnetism7-10 and superconductivity11-14. In high-temperature cuprate superconductors, coherent driving of certain phonon modes has resulted in a transient state with superconducting-like optical properties, observed far above their transition temperature Tc and throughout the pseudogap phase15-18. However, questions remain on the microscopic nature of this transient state and how to distinguish it from a non-superconducting state with enhanced carrier mobility. For example, it is not known whether cuprates driven in this fashion exhibit Meissner diamagnetism. Here we examine the time-dependent magnetic field surrounding an optically driven YBa2Cu3O6.48 crystal by measuring Faraday rotation in a magneto-optic material placed in the vicinity of the sample. For a constant applied magnetic field and under the same driving conditions that result in superconducting-like optical properties15-18, a transient diamagnetic response was observed. This response is comparable in size with that expected in an equilibrium type II superconductor of similar shape and size with a volume susceptibility χv of order -0.3. This value is incompatible with a photo-induced increase in mobility without superconductivity. Rather, it underscores the notion of a pseudogap phase in which incipient superconducting correlations are enhanced or synchronized by the drive.

Crystal lattice fluctuations, which are known to influence phase transitions of quantum materials in equilibrium, are also expected to determine the dynamics of light-induced phase changes. However, they have only rarely been explored in these dynamical settings. Here we study the time evolution of lattice fluctuations in the quantum paraelectric SrTiO3, in which mid-infrared drives have been shown to induce a metastable ferroelectric state. Crucial in these physics is the competition between polar instabilities and antiferrodistortive rotations, which in equilibrium frustrate the formation of long-range ferroelectricity. We make use of high-intensity mid-infrared optical pulses to resonantly drive the Ti-O-stretching mode at 17 THz, and we measure the resulting change in lattice fluctuations using time-resolved X-ray diffuse scattering at a free-electron laser. After a prompt increase, we observe a long-lived quench in R-point antiferrodistortive lattice fluctuations. Their enhancement and reduction are theoretically explained by considering the fourth-order nonlinear phononic interactions to the driven optical phonon and third-order coupling to lattice strain, respectively. These observations provide a number of testable hypotheses for the physics of light-induced ferroelectricity.

The Einstein-de Haas effect was originally observed in a landmark experiment1 demonstrating that the angular momentum associated with aligned electron spins in a ferromagnet can be converted to mechanical angular momentum by reversing the direction of magnetization using an external magnetic field. A related problem concerns the timescale of this angular momentum transfer. Experiments have established that intense photoexcitation in several metallic ferromagnets leads to a drop in magnetization on a timescale shorter than 100 femtoseconds-a phenomenon called ultrafast demagnetization2-4. Although the microscopic mechanism for this process has been hotly debated, the key question of where the angular momentum goes on these femtosecond timescales remains unanswered. Here we use femtosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction to show that most of the angular momentum lost from the spin system upon laser-induced demagnetization of ferromagnetic iron is transferred to the lattice on sub-picosecond timescales, launching a transverse strain wave that propagates from the surface into the bulk. By fitting a simple model of the X-ray data to simulations and optical data, we estimate that the angular momentum transfer occurs on a timescale of 200 femtoseconds and corresponds to 80 per cent of the angular momentum that is lost from the spin system. Our results show that interaction with the lattice has an essential role in the process of ultrafast demagnetization in this system.

The interplay between charge order and superconductivity remains one of the central themes of research in quantum materials. In the case of cuprates, the coupling between striped charge fluctuations and local electromagnetic fields is especially important, as it affects transport properties, coherence, and dimensionality of superconducting correlations. Here, we study the emission of coherent terahertz radiation in single-layer cuprates of the La2-xBaxCuO4 family, for which this effect is expected to be forbidden by symmetry. We find that emission vanishes for compounds in which the stripes are quasi-static but is activated when c-axis inversion symmetry is broken by incommensurate or fluctuating charge stripes, such as in La1.905Ba0.095CuO4 and in La1.845Ba0.155CuO4. In this case, terahertz radiation is emitted by surface Josephson plasmons, which are generally dark modes, but couple to free space electromagnetic radiation because of the stripe modulation.

Resonant optical excitation of certain molecular vibrations in κ-(BEDT-TTF)_{2}Cu[N(CN)_{2}]Br has been shown to induce transient superconductinglike optical properties at temperatures far above equilibrium T_{c}. Here, we report experiments across the bandwidth-tuned phase diagram of this class of materials, and study the Mott insulator κ-(BEDT-TTF)_{2}Cu[N(CN)_{2}]Cl and the metallic compound κ-(BEDT-TTF)_{2}Cu(NCS)_{2}. We find nonequilibrium photoinduced superconductivity only in κ-(BEDT-TTF)_{2}Cu[N(CN)_{2}]Br, indicating that the proximity to the Mott insulating phase and possibly the presence of preexisting superconducting fluctuations are prerequisites for this effect.

In triangular lattice structures, spatial anisotropy and frustration can lead to rich equilibrium phase diagrams with regions containing complex, highly entangled states of matter. In this work, we study the driven two-rung triangular Hubbard model and evolve these states out of equilibrium, observing how the interplay between the driving and the initial state unexpectedly shuts down the particle-hole excitation pathway. This restriction, which symmetry arguments fail to predict, dictates the transient dynamics of the system, causing the available particle-hole degrees of freedom to manifest uniform long-range order. We discuss implications of our results for a recent experiment on photoinduced superconductivity in κ-(BEDT-TTF)_{2}Cu[N(CN)_{2}]Br molecules.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) are selective blood fractions obtained by cen¬trifugation. They act locally on inflammation and immunity as adjuvant homeostatic modulators during tissue regeneration. In recent years, many methods for achieving these blood concentrates have emerged, whose parameters of time and force of centrifugation presented themselves as critical, conflicting, and poorly understood points. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of different centrifugal experimental parameters on the concentration of cells and platelets in samples of anticoagulated blood. Blood samples were centrifuged by forces of 200, 400 and 800 x g for 5, 10 and 15 minutes of centrifugation times to obtain three fractions: a) platelet-poor plasma (PPP), b) leukocyte-rich plasma (L- PRP) and c) red blood cell sed¬iment (RBC). The leukocyte and platelet content of each centrifuged fraction was measured by automated flow cytometry associated with the peroxidase reaction for differential leukocyte count. The application of 200 x g generated a more significant dispersive content of leukocytes and platelets in the supernatant fraction of PPP when compared to the other two strength ranges. However, it presented the highest concentration of platelets in the sediment (P <0.05 ANOVA), representing a loss of total mass during processing. The 400 and 800 x g forces showed leukocytes and platelets condensed in the L-PRP fraction and lower levels in the sedi¬ment, demonstrating the greater effectiveness of buoyancy in the resuspension of these sedimented elements. Our experimental data showed that the concentration and organization of leukocytes and platelets in the centrifuged blood matrices are very sensitive to variations in g force and centrifugation time, thus generating products with different biological composition and characteristics, and with specific potential therapeutic effects. The present study did not focus on comparing authoring methods, but on presenting the impact of methodological variations on the biological nature of centrifuged blood matrices. Further in vivo studies are needed to assess the specific clinical effect of each methodological change.

INTRODUCTION: Persons with disorders of consciousness (DoC) may perceive pain without being able to communicate their discomfort. Nociception Coma Scale (NCS) and its revised form (NCS-R) have been proposed to assess nociception in coma survivors with DoC. OBJECTIVE: Aim of the present study was to compare, in non-communicative patients with DoC, NCS-R scores obtained with the standard pressure on fingernail bed (standard stimulus, SS) versus other personalized painful stimuli (PS), to verify possible correlations between NCS-R and Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients with DoC were included in the study. Responsiveness and pain perception were assessed by CRS-R and NCS-R with standard stimulus (NCS-R-SS) and personalized stimulation (NCS-R-PS). Statistical analysis was performed with the nonparametric Wilcoxon test for comparison of both total NCS-R-SS and NCS-R-PS scores. RESULTS: NCS-R at admission showed that 9 of 21 patients (42.8%) had higher scores in response to personalized stimulus compared to standard stimulus. Significant correlation with CRS-R were found for both NCS-R-SS (R = 0.701, p = .008) and NCS-R-PS (R = 0.564, p = .045). Discussion: The preliminary results obtained in the present study suggest that NCS-R-PS may disclose pain perception in a larger number of non-communicative patients with DoC, compared to NCS-R-SS.

INTRODUCTION: Various blood-derived products have been proposed for the topical treatment of ocular surface diseases. The aim of the study was to compare the different content of Growth Factors (GFs) and Interleukins (ILs) in peripheral blood (PB-S) and Cord Blood (CB-S) sera. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sera were obtained from 105 healthy adult donors (PB-S) and 107 umbilical/placental veins at the time of delivery (CB-S). The levels of epithelial-GF (EGF), fibroblast-GF (FGF), platelet-derived-GF (PDGF), insulin-GF (IGF), transforming-GF alpha (TGF-α,) and beta 1-2-3 (TGF-ß1-ß2-ß3), vascular endothelial-GF (VEGF), nerve-GF (NGF), Interleukin (IL)-1ß,IL-4,IL-6,IL-10, and IL-13 were assessed by Bio-Plex Protein Array System (Bio-Rad Laboratories, CA, USA). The Mann-Whitney test for unpaired data was applied to compare GFs and ILs levels in the two sources. The associations among each GF/IL level and the obstetric data for CB-S and hematological characteristics for PB-S were also investigated. RESULTS: The levels of EGF, TGF-α, TGF-ß2, FGF, PDGF, VEGF, NGF, IL-1B, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, and IL-13 were significantly higher in CB-S compared to PB-S. Conversely, the levels of IGF-1, IGF-2, and TGF-ß1 were significantly higher in PB-S. The female sex and the weight of the child showed a significant association in predicting EGF and PDGF levels. CONCLUSION: A significantly different content in those GFs and ILs was demonstrated in the two blood sources. Since each GF/IL selectively regulates different cellular processes involved in corneal healing, the use of PB-S or CB-S should be chosen on the basis of the cellular mechanism to be promoted in each clinical case.

OBJECTIVE: Non-healing venous leg ulcers (VLUs) have a significant effect on patients' quality of life and substantially increase expenditures in health-care systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of the Calendula officinalis extract, Plenusdermax, in the treatment of VLUs. METHOD: Patients treated with Calendula officinalis extract (n=38) and control patients (n=19) were evaluated every two weeks for 30 weeks or until their ulcers healed. Assessments included determination of the wound area by planimetry, infection control, and evaluation of the clinical aspects of the wounds. The percentage of healing velocity per week (%HVw), taking the initial area at baseline into account, was also determined. RESULTS: The proportion of the treatment patients achieving complete epithelialisation was 72 % and 32 % in the treatment and control groups, respectively. The average healing time was approximately 12 weeks in the treatment group and 25 % in control patients. Patients with ulcers treated with Calendula officinalis extract had a significant 4-fold increase in percentage healing velocity per week, 7.4 %, compared with 1.7 % in the control group. No adverse events were observed during the Calendula officinalis extract treatment. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that Calendula officinalis extract is an effective treatment for VLUs. The refeeding syndrome is frequent and potentially deadly, still it is underdiagnosed. It is defined by clinical and biological manifestations that are seen upon refeeding of malnourished patients. It is the consequence of the transition from catabolism to anabolism. Ions intracellular shift caused by insulin and B1 vitamin deficiency are fundamental in the development of this syndrome. Riskconditions are well summarized by the NICE criteria. To avoid refeeding syndrome, it is fundamental to find and correct any electrolytic deficiency and to give thiamine before starting a slow and progressive oral, enteral or parenteral refeeding.

BACKGROUND: The release of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) from trigeminal nerves plays a central role in the pathophysiology of migraine and clinical evidence shows an antimigraine effect for CGRP receptor antagonists. Systemic administration of nitroglycerin (NTG), a nitrovasodilator, consistently provokes spontaneous-like migraine attacks in migraine sufferers; in the rat, systemic NTG induces a condition of hyperalgesia, probably through the activation of cerebral/spinal structures involved in nociceptive transmission. AIM: The aim of this article is to test the analgesic effect of the CGRP receptor antagonist MK-8825 in two animal models of pain that may be relevant for migraine: the tail flick test and the formalin test performed during NTG-induced hyperalgesia. RESULTS: MK-8825 showed analgesic activity when administered alone at both the tail flick test and the formalin test. Furthermore, the CGRP antagonist proved effective in counteracting NTG-induced hyperalgesia in both tests. MK-8825 indeed reduced the nociceptive behavior when administered either simultaneously or prior to (30-60 minutes before) NTG. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that MK-8825 may represent a potential therapeutic tool for the treatment of migraine.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate in situ 90° electric field-induced uniform magnetization rotation in single domain submicron ferromagnetic islands grown on a ferroelectric single crystal using x-ray photoemission electron microscopy. The experimental findings are well correlated with micromagnetic simulations, showing that the reorientation occurs by the strain-induced magnetoelectric interaction between the ferromagnetic nanostructures and the ferroelectric crystal. Specifically, the ferroelectric domain structure plays a key role in determining the response of the structure to the applied electric field, resulting in three strain-induced regimes of magnetization behavior for the single domain islands.

Optically driven quantum materials exhibit a variety of non-equilibrium functional phenomena, which to date have been primarily studied with ultrafast optical, X-Ray and photo-emission spectroscopy. However, little has been done to characterize their transient electrical responses, which are directly associated with the functionality of these materials. Especially interesting are linear and nonlinear current-voltage characteristics at frequencies below 1 THz, which are not easily measured at picosecond temporal resolution. Here, we report on ultrafast transport measurements in photo-excited K3C60. Thin films of this compound were connected to photo-conductive switches with co-planar waveguides. We observe characteristic nonlinear current-voltage responses, which in these films point to photo-induced granular superconductivity. Although these dynamics are not necessarily identical to those reported for the powder samples studied so far, they provide valuable new information on the nature of the light-induced superconducting-like state above equilibrium Tc. Furthermore, integration of non-equilibrium superconductivity into optoelectronic platforms may lead to integration in high-speed devices based on this effect.

Human femoral arteries were cultured up to 56 days. Samples were processed for light, immunohistochemical, and transmission electron microscopy. Arteries became rapidly depopulated; at day 42, an endothelial lining (CD31(+), Weibel-Palade bodies) developed on the intima; endothelium was in continuity with mesenchymal stromal cells (CD44(+), CD90(low), CD105(low)) placed on adventitia. The media-adventitia area showed heterogeneous cell populations. In long-term organ culture, femoral artery develops a continuous cell coverage that differentiates to endothelium on the intima exclusively. This suggests that distinct topographical factors, such as resident progenitors and/or matrix signals, are able to regulate vascular homeostasis in adult life.

OBJECTIVES AND DESIGN: To establish whether in diabetic patients with peripheral artery obstructive disease (PAOD) vasa vasorum (vv) neoangiogenesis is altered with increased arterial damage. MATERIALS: Thirty-three patients with PAOD and critical lower limb ischaemia, 22 with type II diabetes. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry for endothelial cell markers (CD34 and von Willebrand Factor); real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to quantify arterial wall expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF); enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to assess blood VEGF; flow cytometry to detect circulating endothelial cells (CECs). RESULTS: Patients with PAOD and diabetes have a higher frequency (60% vs. 45%) of advanced atherosclerotic lesions and a significant reduction (p = 0.0003) in CD34(+) capillaries in the arterial media. Adventitial neoangiogenesis was increased equally (CD34(+) and vWF(+)) in all patients. Likewise, all patients have increased CEC and VEGF concentration in the blood as well as in-situ VEGF transcript expression. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with PAOD have remarkable arterial damage despite increased in-situ and circulating expression of the pro-angiogenic VEGF; a dysfunctional vv angiogenesis was seen in diabetics which also showed a higher frequency of parietal damage; it is suggested that in diabetic arterial wall, injury is worsened by vv inability to finalise an effective VEGF-driven arterial wall neoangiogenesis.

Low levels of the regulatory peptide apelin have been reported in patients with lone atrial fibrillation (AF). We evaluate the potential utility of assessing apelin plasma levels as a predictor of AF recurrence in individuals presenting for electrical cardioversion. Plasma levels of apelin, brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein were measured in 93 patients, with persistent AF before successful external electrical cardioversion. Significantly lower apelin plasma levels were found in patients with AF recurrence as respect to population with persistence of sinus rhythm during a six months follow-up. The hazard increased with duration of AF, left atrial dimension, BNP concentrations. Subjects with apelin levels below the median had a hazard ratio of 3.1 of arrhythmia recurrence with respect to those with high apelin levels (p<0.05). A significant difference in BNP levels was found between patients with and without AF recurrence during the follow-up. After adjusting for potential confounders, both BNP and apelin retained their statistical significance as independent predictors of arrhythmia recurrence. Patients with both low apelin and elevated BNP had a worse prognosis compared with those with either low apelin or elevated BNP alone. Low plasma apelin levels before external electrical cardioversion are an independent prognostic factor for arrhythmia recurrence in patients with AF treated with antiarrhythmic drugs. Apelin may be of particular value for the identification of high-risk patients in addition to BNP.

The International Classification of Headache Disorders does not separate the moderate from severe/very severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), since they are all defined by Glasgow coma scale (GCS) < 13. The distinction between the severe and very severe TBI (GCS < 8) should be made upon coma duration that in the latter may be longer than 15 days up to months in the case of vegetative state. Post-traumatic amnesia duration may double the coma duration itself. Therefore, the 3-month parameter proposed to define the occurrence or resolution of post-traumatic headache (PTH) appears inadequate. Following TBI, neuropathic pain, central pain, thalamic pain, combined pain are all possible and they call for proper pharmacological approaches. One more reason for having difficulties in obtaining information about headache in the early phase after regaining consciousness is the presence of concomitant medications that may affect pain perception. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops days or weeks after stress and tends to improve or disappear within 3 months after exposure; interestingly, this spontaneous timing resembles that of PTH. In our experience the number of TBI patients with PTH at 1-year follow-up is lower in those with longer coma duration and more severe TBI. Cognitive functioning evaluated after at least 12 months from TBI, showed mild or no impairment in these patients with severe TBI and PTH, whereas they have psychopathological changes, namely anxiety and depression. The majority of patients with PTH after severe/very severe TBI had skull fractures or dural lacerations and paroxystic EEG abnormalities. The combination of psychological changes (depression and anxiety) and organic features (skull fractures, dural lacerations, epileptic EEG abnormalities) in PTH may be inversely correlated with the severity of TBI, with prevalence of psychological disturbances in mild TBI and of organic lesions in severe TBI. On the other hand, only in severe TBI patients with good cognitive recovery the influence of the psychopathological disorders may play a role. In fact, the affective pain perception is probably related to the integrity of cognitive functions as in mild TBI and in severe TBI with good cognitive outcome.

Variability in drug response is a major barrier to the successful treatment of migraine, and most treatments are only optimal in a subset of patients. Although triptans provide the best therapeutic option for the treatment of acute migraine, it has not previously been possible to predict how well patients will respond to a specific triptan or whether they will experience unpleasant adverse events. Hence, it has been difficult for physicians to match individual patients with the most suitable agent to treat their migraine pain. Intrapatient variability has been associated with polymorphisms in genes encoding drug-metabolizing enzymes, drug transporters and drug targets. Pharmacogenetics provides the possibility of tailoring the therapeutic approach to individual patients, in order to maximize treatment efficacy while minimizing the potential for unwanted side-effects. This review demonstrates how almotriptan may overcome genetically determined responses by utilizing diverse metabolic pathways to provide therapeutic benefit to many migraineurs.
