PURPOSE: Codeine is a narcotic antitussive often considered for managing patients with refractory or unexplained chronic cough. This study aimed to evaluate the proportion and characteristics of patients who responded to codeine treatment in real-world practice. METHODS: Data from the Korean Chronic Cough Registry, a multicenter prospective cohort study, were analyzed. Physicians assessed the response to codeine based on the timing and degree of improvement after treatment initiation. Follow-up assessments included the Leicester Cough Questionnaire and cough severity visual analog scale at six months. In a subset of subjects, objective cough frequency was evaluated following the initiation of codeine treatment. RESULTS: Of 305 patients, 124 (40.7%) responded to treatments based on anatomic diagnostic protocols, while 181 (59.3%) remained unexplained or refractory to etiological treatments. Fifty-one subjects (16.7%) were classified as codeine treatment responders (those showing a rapid and clear response), 57 (18.7%) as partial responders, and 62 (20.3%) as non-responders. Codeine responders showed rapid improvement in objective cough frequency and severity scores within a week of the treatment. At 6 months, responders showed significantly improved scores in cough scores, compared to non-responders. Several baseline parameters were associated with a more favorable treatment response, including older age, non-productive cough, and the absence of heartburn. CONCLUSIONS: Approximately 60% of chronic cough patients in specialist clinics may require antitussive drugs. While codeine benefits some, only a limited proportion (about 20%) of patients may experience rapid and significant improvement. This underscores the urgent need for new antitussive drugs to address these unmet clinical needs.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that the gut microbiome is associated with asthma. However, altered gut microbiome in adult asthma is not yet well established. We aimed to investigate the gut microbiome profiles of adult asthmatic patients with symptomatic eosinophilic inflammation. METHODS: The 16 s rRNA gene metagenomic analysis of feces in the symptomatic eosinophilic asthma group (EA, n = 28) was compared with the healthy control (HC, n = 18) and the chronic cough control (CC, n = 13). A correlation analysis between individual taxa and clinical markers was performed within the EA group. Changes in the gut microbiome were examined in patients with significant symptom improvement in the EA group. RESULTS: The relative abundances of Lachnospiraceae and Oscillospiraceae significantly decreased and Bacteroidetes increased in the EA group. Within EA group, Lachnospiraceae was negatively correlated with indicators of type 2 inflammation and lung function decline. Enterobacteriaceae and Prevotella was positively associated with type 2 inflammation and lung function decline, respectively. The abundance of predicted genes associated with amino acid metabolism and secondary bile acid biosynthesis was diminished in the EA group. These functional gene family alterations could be related to gut permeability, and the serum lipopolysaccharide concentration was actually high in the EA group. EA patients with symptom improvement after 1 month did not show a significant change in the gut microbiome. CONCLUSIONS: Symptomatic eosinophilic adult asthma patients showed altered the gut microbiome composition. Specifically, a decrease in commensal clostridia was observed, and a decrease in Lachnospiraceae was correlated with blood eosinophilia and lung function decline.

Omalizumab is effective in chronic spontaneous urticaria unresponsive to antihistamines. Of the licensed dosing schedules, Korean patients prefer a low dose, of 150 mg/month, for financial reasons. However, real-world experiences of low-dose omalizumab consumption have not been reported. The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the treatment outcomes and long-term clinical course of patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria who were treated with low-dose omalizumab. The study included 179 patients aged ≥ 20 years who were treated with omalizumab 150 mg/month for ≥ 12 weeks. Baseline disease activity was mild, moderate, and severe in 54.7%, 35.2%, and 10.1% of patients, respectively. A complete response was observed in 133 patients at 12 weeks, among whom 88 patients showed early responses within 4 weeks. Overall, 158 patients finally achieved a complete response. Multivariate analyses revealed that baseline disease activity is more likely to be mild in patients who experience early and final complete responses. The absence of atopic comorbidities correlated with an early response. Smoking was associated with a final complete response. This study shows that low-dose omalizumab provides favourable treatment outcomes in antihistamine-refractory chronic spontaneous urticaria. Disease severity, atopic comorbidity, and smoking may be predictive factors for studying the response to omalizumab.

PURPOSE: The Korean Chronic Cough Registry study was initiated to characterize patients with chronic cough (CC) and investigate their outcomes in real-world clinical practice. This report aims to describe the baseline cohort profile and study protocols. METHODS: This multicenter, prospective observational cohort study included newly referred CC patients and those already being treated for refractory or unexplained chronic cough (RUCC). Cough status was assessed using a visual analog scale, the Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ), and the Cough Hypersensitivity Questionnaire (CHQ). RESULTS: A total of 610 patients (66.9% women; median age 59.0 years) were recruited from 18 centers, with 176 being RUCC patients (28.9%). The median age at CC onset was 50.1 years, and 94.4% had adult-onset CC (≥ 19 years). The median cough duration was 4 years. Compared to newly referred CC patients, RUCC patients had a longer cough duration (6.0 years vs. 3.0 years) but had fewer symptoms and signs suggesting asthma, rhinosinusitis, or gastroesophageal acid reflux disease. Subjects with RUCC had lower LCQ scores (10.3 ± 3.3 vs. 11.6 ± 3.6; P < 0.001) and higher CHQ scores (9.1 ± 3.9 vs. 8.4 ± 4.1; P = 0.024). There were no marked differences in the characteristics of cough between refractory chronic cough and unexplained chronic cough. CONCLUSIONS: Chronic cough typically develops in adulthood, lasting for years. Cough severity and quality of life impairment indicate the presence of unmet clinical needs and insufficient cough control in real-world clinical practice. Longitudinal follow-up is warranted to investigate the natural history and treatment outcomes.

The current emergence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the possible side effects of COVID-19 mRNA vaccination remain worrisome. Few cases of vaccination-related side effects, such as vasculitis, have been reported. Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), also known as Churg-Strauss syndrome, is a type of vasculitis characterized by the histological richness of eosinophils, asthma, polyneuropathy, sinusitis, and skin or lung involvement. Here, we report the first case of new onset EGPA following COVID-19 vaccination in Korea. A 71-year old woman developed a skin rash and presented with progressive weakness of the upper and lower extremities after the BNT162b2 vaccination (Pfizer-BioNTech). She was diagnosed with EGPA and her symptoms improved after systemic steroid and immunosuppressant therapy. Although it is very rare, clinicians should be aware that EGPA may occur after COVID-19 vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are escalating, and their socioeconomic burden is increasing. However, large-scale prospective studies investigating ADRs during hospitalization are rare in Korea. We prospectively investigated the incidence, characteristics, and economic burden of ADRs in hospitalized patients based on electronic medical records (EMRs). METHODS: Among patients admitted to three hospitals from October 2016 to October 2017, 5,000 patients were randomly selected and prospectively observed during hospitalization. Research nurses monitored and detected patients who had symptoms, signs, or laboratory findings suspicious for ADRs using an EMR-based detection protocol. Next, allergy and ADR specialists reviewed the medical records to determine the relationship between adverse reactions and drugs. Cases in which a causal relationship was certain, probable/likely, or possible were included in the ADR cases. Clinically meaningful ADR cases or those leading to prolonged hospitalization were defined as significant ADRs. RESULTS: ADRs occurred in 510 (10.2%) patients. The mean length of hospital stay was approximately 5 days longer in patients with ADRs. Opioids accounted for the highest percentage of total ADRs. Significant ADRs were observed in 148 (3.0%) patients. Antibiotics accounted for the highest percentage of significant ADRs. Drug hypersensitivity reactions (DHRs) occurred in 88 (1.8%) patients. Antibiotics accounted for the highest percentage of DHRs. The average medical expenses for one day of hospitalization per patient were highest in significant ADRs, followed by non-significant ADRs, and non-ADRs. CONCLUSION: ADRs in hospitalized patients are an important clinical issue, resulting in a substantial socioeconomic burden. EMR-based strategy could be a useful tool for ADR monitoring and early detection.

BACKGROUND: Targeted therapies have broadened the available treatment options for patients with severe eosinophilic asthma (SEA). However, differences in the magnitude of treatment responses among patients indicate the presence of various underlying pathophysiological processes and patient subgroups. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to describe the characteristics of SEA and identify its patient subgroups. METHODS: Clinical data from the Cohort for Reality and Evolution of Adult Asthma in Korea were analyzed. Cluster analysis was performed among those with SEA using 5 variables, namely, prebronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 s, body mass index, age at symptom onset, smoking amount, and blood eosinophil counts. RESULTS: Patients with SEA showed prevalent sensitization to aeroallergens, decreased lung function, and poor asthma control status. Cluster analysis revealed 3 distinctive subgroups among patients with SEA. Cluster 1 (n = 177) consisted of patients reporting the lowest blood eosinophils (median, 346.8 cells/µL) and modest severe asthma with preserved lung function during the 12-month treatment period. Cluster 2 (n = 42) predominantly included smoking males with severe persistent airway obstruction and moderate eosinophilia (median, 451.8 cells/µL). Lastly, cluster 3 (n = 95) included patients with the most severe asthma, the highest eosinophil levels (median, 817.5 cells/µL), and good treatment response in terms of improved lung function and control status. CONCLUSIONS: Three subgroups were identified in SEA through the cluster analysis. The distinctive features of each cluster may help physicians predict patients who will respond to biologics with greater magnitude of clinical improvement. Further research regarding the underlying pathophysiology and clinical importance of each subgroup is warranted.

BACKGROUND: Although inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) are the recommended first-line therapy for asthma, determining whether to continue or discontinue ICS treatment in patients with mild asthma remains challenging for clinicians. Several studies have revealed that patients with mild-persistent asthma maintained a well-controlled state after ICS withdrawal. However, the long-term outcomes of ICS withdrawal have not yet been determined. OBJECTIVE: To determine the possible clinical outcomes of the discontinuation of ICS in patients with well-controlled mild asthma. METHODS: We investigated the clinical outcomes of discontinuing ICSs in patients with well-controlled mild asthma and compared the time to loss of control (LOC) between patients who stopped ICS treatment (ICS withdrawal group, IWG) and those who continued treatment for 3 years (continuous ICS group, CIG). RESULTS: A significant difference in the time to LOC was observed between the IWG and CIG (hazard ratio, 2.56; 95% confidence interval, 1.52-4.33; P < .001). Increasing fractional exhaled nitric oxide levels (P = 0.008) and sputum eosinophil counts (%) (P = 0.015) revealed a weak but significant association with LOC risk in the CIG. The sputum eosinophil counts (P = 0.039) and serum total immunoglobulin E levels (P = 0.014) were significantly higher in the LOC group than in the non-LOC group of the CIG. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the maintenance of ICS treatment may help keep patients' asthma under control. Furthermore, patients with LOC had significantly higher sputum eosinophil counts in the CIG than those in the non-LOC group. Therefore, continuous ICS use by patients with mild, well-controlled asthma could be associated with good clinical outcomes. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: KCT0002234.

BACKGROUND: The effect of novel tobacco products, such as electronic cigarettes (EC) and heated tobacco products (HTP), on allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma is not well known. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the health effect of novel tobacco products on asthma and AR. METHODS: This study was conducted using large survey data on Korean middle and high school students. The relationship between current asthma/AR and novel tobacco products user status was evaluated. In order to compare the combined effects of conventional cigarette (CC), EC, and HTP use on current allergic diseases, the participants were classified into 18 groups based on CC (current, former, and never), EC (current, former, and never), and HTP (ever and never) status. RESULTS: A total of 60,040 participants representing 2,850,118 Korean adolescents were analyzed. Of all participants, 6.7%, 2.7%, and 2.9% were current CC, current EC, and ever HTP users, respectively. Current CC and ever HTP use was significantly associated with current asthma and AR in adjusted models. Current EC showed association with current AR but the association with asthma disappeared in the adjusted model. Among 18 groups, the groups including current CC use showed higher risk of current AR and asthma than never HTP-never EC-never CC group. The odds ratio of current asthma especially increased more in those who used EC and/or HTP with CC concurrently than those in the never HTP-never EC-current CC user group. CONCLUSION: Using EC and/or HTP in adolescents might enhance the adverse effect of CC on AR and asthma.

BACKGROUND: There could be a gap between asthma management guidelines and current practice. We evaluated the awareness of and compliance with asthma management guidelines, and the internal and external barriers to compliance, for the first time in Korea. METHODS: From March to September of 2012, 364 physicians treating asthma patients at primary, secondary, and tertiary teaching hospitals were enrolled. They completed a questionnaire on the awareness of and compliance with asthma management guidelines, and the barriers and alternatives to their implementation. RESULTS: Of the 364 physicians, 79.1% were men and 56.9% were primary care physicians. The mean age was 40.5 ± 11.2 years. Most of them were aware of asthma management guidelines (89.3%). However, only a portion (11.0%) of them complied with the guidelines for asthma. Pulmonary function tests for diagnosis of asthma were performed by 20.1% of all physicians and 9.2% of primary care physicians, and by 9.9% of all physicians and 5.8% of primary care physicians for monitoring. Physicians stated that 'asthma monitoring' was the most difficult part of the guidelines, followed by 'environmental control and risk factors.' Only 39.6% (31.9% of the primary care physicians) prescribed an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) as the first-line treatment for persistent asthma. The internal barriers were physician's preference for oral medications, difficulty in use even with inhaler training, and concern over ICS side effects. The external barriers were possible rejection of medical reimbursement by health insurance, refusal by the patient, cost, and a poor environment for teaching the patient how to use the inhaler. Alternatives proposed by physicians to implement asthma management guidelines were to improve medical reimbursement policies and the level of awareness of such guidelines. CONCLUSION: Compliance with the asthma management guidelines, including ICS prescription, is low despite the awareness of the guidelines. It is necessary to develop a strategy to overcome the internal and external barriers.

Controversies exist with regard to in vivo approaches to delayed immunologically mediated adverse drug reactions, such as exanthem (maculopapular eruption), drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis, and fixed drug eruptions. In particular, widespread differences exist between regions and practice on the availability and use of intradermal and patch testing, the standard drug concentrations used, the use of additional drugs in intradermal and patch testing to help determine cross-reactivity, the timing of testing in relation to the occurrence of the adverse drug reaction, the use of testing in specific phenotypes, and the use of oral challenge in conjunction with delayed intradermal and patch testing to ascertain drug tolerance. It was noted that there have been advances in the science of delayed T cell-mediated reactions that have shed light on immunopathogenesis and provided a mechanism of preprescription screening in the case of HLA-B*57:01 and abacavir hypersensitivity and HLA-B*15:02 and carbamazepine Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis in Southeast Asian subjects. Future directions should include the collaboration of large international networks to develop and standardize in vivo diagnostic approaches, such as skin testing and patch testing, combined with ex vivo and in vitro laboratory approaches.

BACKGROUND: Microbes in the airway have been shown to be associated with the pathogenesis of asthma. The upper airway microbiome influences the dysbiosis of the lower airway microbiome. However, to date, the influence of upper airway microbiome for adult and elderly asthma has not been fully elucidated. Here, the metagenome of upper airway microbiome of young adults and elderly was analyzed to identify their association with adult asthma. METHODS: Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from young adult and elderly asthma patients and non-asthmatic subjects. The compositions and functional genes of airway microbiome were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing. RESULTS: The composition of microbiota differed between young adult and elderly, and it was different between asthmatics and non-asthmatics in each age group. Different bacteria were related to FEV1% predicted in each age group. Genes related to lysine degradation, N-glycan biosynthesis, caprolactam degradation, and PPAR signaling pathway, which could be related to the reduction in inflammation and degradation of air pollutants, were higher in non-asthmatics. Genes related to pentose phosphate pathway, lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis, flagella assembly, and bacterial chemotaxis-which may all be related to increased inflammation and colonization of pathogenic bacteria-were higher in young adult asthmatic patients. However, the functional genes of airway microbiome in elderly patients were not significantly different according to asthma morbidity. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the composition and function of upper airway microbiome could influence asthma pathogenesis, and the microbiome could play various roles depending on the age group.

Chronic cough is a multi-factorial syndrome commonly presenting as cough hypersensitivity in adult patients. It is a common medical condition in the communities but is more prevalent in older adults. Elderly patients (≥65 years) frequently suffer from multiple comorbidities, which may lead to more clinical heterogeneity in chronic cough and pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Hyposensitivity in cough reflex, probably resulting from central nervous system illnesses, is another potential concern. Despite these complexities and challenges, elderly-specific issues have rarely been addressed in current clinical practice guidelines for chronic cough. Considering recent trends in global population aging, the burden of elderly chronic cough is expected to increase into the near future. This review aimed to respond to following clinical questions: (1) is chronic cough a more heterogeneous condition in the elderly compared to younger adults; and (2) are there additional considerations when choosing the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to this condition in the elderly?

PURPOSE: Chronic cough is a common problem in various populations. The present study assessed the impact of cough and unmet needs in Korean patients with chronic cough. METHODS: This cross-sectional multi-center study enrolled adult patients newly referred to clinic for assessment of chronic cough. A second group of patients with unexplained chronic cough following detailed assessment were recruited for comparison. Patients completed self-reported questionnaires, including cough characteristics, impact of cough on daily life, and unmet needs. RESULTS: A total of 447 subjects were recruited from six referral clinics, including 408 with chronic cough and 39 with unexplained chronic cough. Almost all patients reported that cough impacted their daily lives. Psychosocial impacts were more evident in unexplained cough patients compared to newly referred patients. Approximately 75% of newly referred patients had previously sought medical care for cough on multiple occasions, but the effectiveness of treatment was limited (70.3%) or absent (17.3%). The most frequent unmet need was the ineffectiveness of treatment (49.3%), followed by unclear diagnosis (30.1%). The majority of participants ( > 80%) expressed the need for further information on accessing cough specialists and disease management. The main problem faced by unexplained cough patients was poor cough control despite treatment (64%). CONCLUSIONS: Chronic cough has a substantial impact on daily life and is worst in those whose cough remains unexplained following assessment. Ineffectiveness of treatment and unclear diagnosis were major unmet needs. Medical information about chronic cough was also lacking. Improvements in the management of chronic cough patients in Korea are necessary.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between cephalosporin hypersensitivity and a history of ß-lactam hypersensitivity is unclear. We evaluated the usefulness of routine intradermal cefazolin skin testing and its relationship with the history of ß-lactam hypersensitivity. METHODS: The electronic medical records of patients who underwent intradermal cefazolin (0.3 mg/mL) skin testing without negative controls from January 2010 to January 2011 at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital were evaluated. The history of ß-lactam hypersensitivity of the patients was taken. Immediate adverse reactions after cefazolin injection were evaluated by searching the electronic medical records for key words and reviewing consultation documents of allergy specialists or dermatologists. The medical records of the patients were reviewed by an allergist. RESULTS: There were 13,153 cases of cefazolin skin testing over the 13-month study period. Among the 12,969 cases with negative skin test results, 8 had immediate hypersensitivity related to cefazolin (0.06%). The negative predictive value of cefazolin skin testing alone was 99.94%. The overall positivity rate of cefazolin skin tests was 1.4% (184/13,153). Of the cases with a history of allergy to ß-lactams, 15% (6/40) showed a positive cefazolin skin test result compared to only 1.36% (178/13,113) of cases with no such history (P < 0.001) including some false-positive tests. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that routine screening involving cefazolin skin testing without negative controls is not useful for all patients, but could be helpful for those with a history of ß-lactam hypersensitivity, although a large prospective study is needed to confirm this.

BACKGROUND: Allergic asthma is a heterogeneous chronic inflammatory disease of the airways with a massive infiltration of eosinophils or neutrophils mediated by allergen-specific TH2 and TH17 cells, respectively. Therefore successful treatment of allergic asthma will require suppression of both TH2 and TH17 cells. OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate the role of the TH17 cell pathway in regulating TH2 cell responses in allergic asthma. METHODS: Allergic asthma was induced by intranasal challenge with proteinase allergens in C57BL/6, Il17a-/-Il17f-/-, and retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor γt (RORγt)gfp/gfp mice. A pharmacologic RORγt inhibitor was used to evaluate its preventive and therapeutic effects in allergic asthma. Characteristics of allergic airway inflammation were analyzed by using flow cytometry, histology, quantitative real-time PCR, and ELISA. Mixed bone marrow chimeric mice, fate mapping analysis, short hairpin RNA transduction, and in vitro T-cell differentiation were used for mechanistic studies. RESULTS: Mice deficient in IL-17A and IL-17F, as well as RORγt, exhibited a significant reduction not only in TH17 cell responses but also in TH2 cell responses in an animal model of allergic asthma. Similarly, mice treated with an RORγt inhibitor had significantly diminished TH17 and TH2 cell responses, leading to reduced neutrophil and eosinophil numbers in the airway. RORγt-deficient T cells were intrinsically defective in differentiating into TH2 cells and expressed increased levels of B-cell lymphoma 6 (Bcl6). Bcl6 knockdown resulted in a remarkable restoration of TH2 cell differentiation in RORγt-deficient T cells. Blockade of RORγt also significantly hampered the differentiation of human TH2 and TH17 cells from naive CD4+ T cells. CONCLUSION: RORγt in T cells is required for optimal TH2 cell differentiation by suppressing Bcl6 expression; this finding suggests that targeting RORγt might be a promising approach for the treatment of allergic asthma by concomitantly suppressing TH17 and TH2 cell responses in the airway.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a major disease condition with high morbidity and can influence lower airway disease status in adults. However, its associations with adult asthma onset and activity have not been examined in detail in a general adult population. OBJECTIVE: To investigate relationships between CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and asthma characteristics. METHODS: A cross-sectional data set of 17,506 adult participants (≥18 years old) in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2010 through 2012 was analyzed. CRS was defined using structured questionnaires according to the international guideline, and presence of nasal polyps was objectively assessed using nasal endoscopy. Presence of asthma and its onset and current activity were assessed using structured questionnaires. RESULTS: CRS was significantly related to asthma, but the relationships were distinct by CRS and asthma status. CRSwNP was significantly associated with adult-onset asthma (onset after 18 years of age) or late-onset asthma (onset after 40 years of age), whereas CRS without nasal polyps was related to childhood-onset asthma (onset before 18 years) or early-onset asthma (onset before 40 years) in adults. The 2 CRS subgroups showed significant associations with current asthma but not with past asthma. However, the comorbid asthma rate was lower than 10% among subjects with CRS. CONCLUSION: This study found distinct age-related patterns of CRSwNP and asthma and demonstrated their significant associations in a general population. However, the low prevalence of asthma in CRSwNP is in sharp contrast to findings in Western populations, which warrants further investigation for ethnic or regional differences in relationships between CRSwNP and asthma.

Here, we investigated the fate of nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) on the Cucumis sativus under both hydroponic and soil conditions. Seedlings were exposed to 0, 250, and 1000 mg/L (or mg/kg soil) nZVI during 6-9 weeks of a growth period. Ionic controls were prepared using Fe-EDTA. None of the nZVI treatments affected the plant biomass. On the basis of the total iron contents and the superparamagnetic property of nZVI-exposed roots, there was no evidence of pristine nZVI translocation from the roots to shoots. Electron microscopy revealed that the transformed iron nanoparticles are stored in the root cell membrane and the vacuoles of the leaf parenchymal cells. X-ray absorption spectroscopy identified ferric citrate (41%) and iron (oxyhydr)oxides (59%) as the main transformed products in the roots. The shoot samples indicated a larger proportion of ferric citrate (60%) compared to iron (oxyhydr)oxides (40%). The 1.8-fold higher expression of the CsHA1 gene indicated that the plant-promoted transformation of nZVI was driven by protons released from the root layers. The current data provide a basis for two potential nZVI transformation pathways in Cucumis sativus: (1) interaction with low molecular weight organic acid ligands and (2) dissolution-precipitation of the mineral products.

From May to July 2015, there was a nation-wide outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) in Korea. MERS is caused by MERS-CoV, an enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the family Coronaviridae. Despite expert opinions that the danger of MERS might be exaggerated, there was an overreaction by the public according to the Korean mass media, which led to a noticeable reduction in social and economic activities during the outbreak. To explain this phenomenon, we presumed that machine learning-based analysis of media outlets would be helpful and collected a number of Korean mass media articles and short-text comments produced during the 10-week outbreak. To process and analyze the collected data (over 86 million words in total) effectively, we created a methodology composed of machine-learning and information-theoretic approaches. Our proposal included techniques for extracting emotions from emoticons and Internet slang, which allowed us to significantly (approximately 73%) increase the number of emotion-bearing texts needed for robust sentiment analysis of social media. As a result, we discovered a plausible explanation for the public overreaction to MERS in terms of the interplay between the disease, mass media, and public emotions.

Nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI)-based materials are increasingly being applied in environmental remediation, thereby lead to their exposure to aquatic and terrestrial biota. However, little is known regarding the toxic effects of surface-modified nZVI on multiple species in the ecosystem. In this study, we systematically compared the toxicities of different forms of nZVIs, such as bare nZVI, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-stabilized nZVI, tetrapolyphosphate (TPP)-coated nZVI and bismuth (Bi)-doped nZVI, on a range of aquatic and terrestrial organisms, including bacteria (Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis), plant (Arabidopsis thaliana), water flea (Daphnia magna) and earthworm (Eisenia fetida). The Bi- and CMC-nZVI induced adverse biological responses across all the test systems, except E. fetida, varying from cell death in E. coli and B. subtilis to inhibition of the physiological states in D. magna and A. thaliana. The particle characterization under exposure conditions indicated that the surface modification of nZVI played a significant role in their toxicities by changing their physicochemical properties. The underlying mechanisms by which nZVI induces toxicity might be a combination of oxidative stress and another mechanism such as cell membrane disruption, chlorosis and hypoxia. Overall, our findings could provide important implications for the development of environment-friendly nanomaterials and direct further ecotoxicological researches regarding interspecies exploration.
