RESUMEN

The breakdown of translational symmetry at heterointerfaces leads to the emergence of new phonon modes localized at the interface1. These modes have an essential role in thermal and electrical transport properties in devices, especially in miniature ones wherein the interface may dominate the entire response of the device2. Although related theoretical work began decades ago1,3-5, experimental research is totally absent owing to challenges in achieving the combined spatial, momentum and spectral resolutions required to probe localized modes. Here, using the four-dimensional electron energy-loss spectroscopy technique, we directly measure both the local vibrational spectra and the interface phonon dispersion relation for an epitaxial cubic boron nitride/diamond heterointerface. In addition to bulk phonon modes, we observe modes localized at the interface and modes isolated from the interface. These features appear only within approximately one nanometre around the interface. The localized modes observed here are predicted to substantially affect the interface thermal conductance and electron mobility. Our findings provide insights into lattice dynamics at heterointerfaces, and the demonstrated experimental technique should be useful in thermal management, electrical engineering and topological phononics.

RESUMEN

Breeding has dramatically changed the plant architecture of wheat (Triticum aestivum), resulting in the development of high-yielding varieties adapted to modern farming systems. However, how wheat breeding shaped the genomic architecture of this crop remains poorly understood. Here, we performed a comprehensive comparative analysis of a whole-genome resequencing panel of 355 common wheat accessions (representing diverse landraces and modern cultivars from China and the United States) at the phenotypic and genomic levels. The genetic diversity of modern wheat cultivars was clearly reduced compared to landraces. Consistent with these genetic changes, most phenotypes of cultivars from China and the United States were significantly altered. Of the 21 agronomic traits investigated, 8 showed convergent changes between the 2 countries. Moreover, of the 207 loci associated with these 21 traits, more than half overlapped with genomic regions that showed evidence of selection. The distribution of selected loci between the Chinese and American cultivars suggests that breeding for increased productivity in these 2 regions was accomplished by pyramiding both shared and region-specific variants. This work provides a framework to understand the genetic architecture of the adaptation of wheat to diverse agricultural production environments, as well as guidelines for optimizing breeding strategies to design better wheat varieties.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that several long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the placenta are associated with preeclampsia (PE). However, the extent to which lncRNAs may contribute to the pathological progression of PE is unclear. RESULTS: Here, we report a hierarchical regulatory network involved in early-onset severe PE (EOSPE). We have carried out transcriptome sequencing on the placentae from patients and normal subjects to identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including some lncRNAs (DElncRNAs). We then constructed a high-quality hierarchical regulatory network of lncRNAs, transcription factors (TFs), and target DEGs, containing 1851 lncRNA-TF interactions and 6901 TF-promoter interactions. The lncRNA-to-target regulatory interactions were further validated by the triplex structures between the DElncRNAs and the promoters of the target DEGs. The DElncRNAs in the regulatory network were clustered into 3 clusters, one containing DElncRNAs correlated with the blood pressure, including FLNB-AS1 with targeting 27.89% (869/3116) DEGs in EOSPE. We further demonstrated that FLNB-AS1 could bind the transcription factor JUNB to regulate a series members of the HIF-1 signaling pathway in trophoblast cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the differential expression of lncRNAs may perturb the lncRNA-TF-DEG hierarchical regulatory network, leading to the dysregulation of many genes involved in EOSPE. Our study provides a new strategy and a valuable resource for studying the mechanism underlying gene dysregulation in EOSPE patients.

RESUMEN

Prodigiosin (PG) is a naturally occurring polypyrrole red pigment produced by numerous microorganisms including some Serratia and Streptomyces strains. PG has exhibited promising anticancer activity; however, the molecular mechanisms of action of PG on malignant cells remain ambiguous. Transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) is a multifunctional cytokine that governs a wide array of cellular processes in development and tissue homeostasis. Malfunctions of TGF-ß signaling are associated with numerous human cancers. Emerging evidence underscores the significance of internalized TGF-ß receptors and their intracellular trafficking in initiating signaling cascades. In this study, we identified PG as a potent inhibitor of the TGF-ß pathway. PG blocked TGF-ß signaling by targeting multiple sites of this pathway, including facilitating the sequestering of TGF-ß receptors in the cytoplasm by impeding the recycling of type II TGF-ß receptors to the cell surface. Additionally, PG prompts a reduction in the abundance of receptors on the cell surface through the disruption of the receptor glycosylation. In human Caucasian lung carcinoma cells and human hepatocellular cancer cell line cells, nanomolar concentrations of PG substantially diminish TGF-ß-triggered phosphorylation of Smad2 protein. This attenuation is further reflected in the suppression of downstream target gene expression, including those encoding fibronectin, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, and N-cadherin. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Prodigiosin (PG) emerges from this study as a potent TGF-ß pathway inhibitor, disrupting receptor trafficking and glycosylation and reducing TGF-ß signaling and downstream gene expression. These findings not only shed light on PG's potential therapeutic role but also present a captivating avenue towards future anti-TGF-ß strategies.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To identify the cut-off values for the number of metastatic lymph nodes (nMLN) and lymph node ratio (LNR) that can predict outcomes in patients with FIGO 2018 IIICp cervical cancer (CC). METHODS: Patients with CC who underwent radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy were identified for a propensity score-matched (PSM) cohort study. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to determine the critical nMLN and LNR values. Five-year overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) rates were compared using Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazard regression analyses. RESULTS: This study included 3,135 CC patients with stage FIGO 2018 IIICp from 47 Chinese hospitals between 2004 and 2018. Based on ROC curve analysis, the cut-off values for nMLN and LNR were 3.5 and 0.11, respectively. The final cohort consisted of nMLN ≤ 3 (n = 2,378) and nMLN > 3 (n = 757) groups and LNR ≤ 0.11 (n = 1,748) and LNR > 0.11 (n = 1,387) groups. Significant differences were found in survival between the nMLN ≤ 3 vs the nMLN > 3 (post-PSM, OS: 76.8% vs 67.9%, P = 0.003; hazard ratio [HR]: 1.411, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.108-1.798, P = 0.005; DFS: 65.5% vs 55.3%, P < 0.001; HR: 1.428, 95% CI: 1.175-1.735, P < 0.001), and the LNR ≤ 0.11 and LNR > 0.11 (post-PSM, OS: 82.5% vs 76.9%, P = 0.010; HR: 1.407, 95% CI: 1.103-1.794, P = 0.006; DFS: 72.8% vs 65.1%, P = 0.002; HR: 1.347, 95% CI: 1.110-1.633, P = 0.002) groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study found that nMLN > 3 and LNR > 0.11 were associated with poor prognosis in CC patients.

RESUMEN

An N-iodosuccinimide (NIS) catalyst was developed for use in the non-traditional synthesis of amide derivatives from nitroalkanes and amines. In contrast to traditional oxidative catalysis, this catalytic system involves reversing the polarities of two catalytic components (umpolung) by means of a hypervalent iodine reagent. A variety of functional groups were tolerated in the reaction, suggesting that they have the potential for use in other types of oxidative catalytic reactions.

RESUMEN

Triticum urartu (diploid, AA) is the progenitor of the A subgenome of tetraploid (Triticum turgidum, AABB) and hexaploid (Triticum aestivum, AABBDD) wheat1,2. Genomic studies of T. urartu have been useful for investigating the structure, function and evolution of polyploid wheat genomes. Here we report the generation of a high-quality genome sequence of T. urartu by combining bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC)-by-BAC sequencing, single molecule real-time whole-genome shotgun sequencing 3 , linked reads and optical mapping4,5. We assembled seven chromosome-scale pseudomolecules and identified protein-coding genes, and we suggest a model for the evolution of T. urartu chromosomes. Comparative analyses with genomes of other grasses showed gene loss and amplification in the numbers of transposable elements in the T. urartu genome. Population genomics analysis of 147 T. urartu accessions from across the Fertile Crescent showed clustering of three groups, with differences in altitude and biostress, such as powdery mildew disease. The T. urartu genome assembly provides a valuable resource for studying genetic variation in wheat and related grasses, and promises to facilitate the discovery of genes that could be useful for wheat improvement.

RESUMEN

Deserts exert strong selection pressures on plants, but the underlying genomic drivers of ecological adaptation and subsequent speciation remain largely unknown. Here, we generated de novo genome assemblies and conducted population genomic analyses of the psammophytic genus Pugionium (Brassicaceae). Our results indicated that this bispecific genus had undergone an allopolyploid event, and the two parental genomes were derived from two ancestral lineages with different chromosome numbers and structures. The postpolyploid expansion of gene families related to abiotic stress responses and lignin biosynthesis facilitated environmental adaptations of the genus to desert habitats. Population genomic analyses of both species further revealed their recent divergence with continuous gene flow, and the most divergent regions were found to be centered on three highly structurally reshuffled chromosomes. Genes under selection in these regions, which were mainly located in one of the two subgenomes, contributed greatly to the interspecific divergence in microhabitat adaptation.

RESUMEN

Ophthalmic artery occlusion caused by facial hyaluronic acid filler injection has always been a rare but devastating complication. With the pursuit of beauty, people have become more interested in ears and hyaluronic acid fillers. Herein, we report the case of a more serious rare complication of ophthalmic artery occlusion caused by ear filler injection. A 45-year-old woman developed vision loss on the left side immediately after receiving cosmetic hyaluronic acid injection in the ear, with only the visual field at the inferior temporal side remaining. She was diagnosed with central retinal artery occlusion in the left eye. After treatment with hyaluronidase injection, dexamethasone, hyperbaric oxygen, and oral alprostadil, blood flow was partially restored in the left ophthalmic artery, and her vision improved. Vascular complications after ear injections are rare. However, as the demand for ear filler injections increases, the probability of serious vascular complications is predicted to increase. The potential mechanism by which occlusion occurred involved the filler reaching the superficial temporal artery system through the superior auricular artery, thus occluding the ophthalmic artery. Having an understanding of anatomy is an important measure to avoid complications.Level of Evidence IV This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Lip filler injection is one of the most common minimally invasive cosmetic procedures involving the face; however, vascular complications are not uncommon. The aim of this study was to investigate the anatomy of the superior labial artery (SLA) and provide precise topographic information for dermal filler injection into the lips. METHODS: Computed tomography (CT) scans of 52 cadaveric heads injected with lead oxide were obtained. We then used Mimics software to construct 3D images of the SLA described by a coordinate system based on the bilateral external auditory canal and the left orbit. This study aimed to classify the SLA in the Han Chinese population, measure its diameter at specific points, and determine the thickness of the lip at those points. Ultimately, we utilized a thermal imaging technique to illustrate the course and depth of the SLA within the lip. The objective of this study was to provide safe guidance for clinical injections. RESULTS: In this study, the SLA was successfully identified in all cadavers. The mean overall diameter of the superior labial arteries was 1.36 ± 0.28 mm. The superior labial artery showed a general course from deep to shallow with an average depth of 5.68 ± 1.68 mm from the oral commissure to the midline. CONCLUSIONS: There are anatomical differences in the superior labial arteries among Chinese people. Furthermore, 3D CT images can digitally elucidate the exact positions of the superior labial artery via a coordinate system, improving the safety of upper lip filler injections in clinical settings. RESUMEN

Colon cancer is the third most important cancer type, leading to a remarkable number of deaths, indicating the necessity of new biomarkers and therapeutic targets for colon cancer patients. Several transmembrane proteins (TMEMs) are associated with tumor progression and cancer malignancy. However, the clinical significance and biological roles of TMEM211 in cancer, especially in colon cancer, are still unknown. In this study, we found that TMEM211 was highly expressed in tumor tissues and the increased TMEM211 was associated with poor prognosis in colon cancer patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. We also showed that abilities regarding migration and invasion were reduced in TMEM211-silenced colon cancer cells (HCT116 and DLD-1). Moreover, TMEM211-silenced colon cancer cells showed decreased levels of Twist1, N-cadherin, Snail and Slug but increased levels of E-cadherin. Levels of phosphorylated ERK, AKT and RelA (NF-κB p65) were also decreased in TMEM211-silenced colon cancer cells. Our findings indicate that TMEM211 regulates epithelial-mesenchymal transition for metastasis through coactivating the ERK, AKT and NF-κB signaling pathways, which might provide a potential prognostic biomarker or therapeutic target for colon cancer patients in the future.

RESUMEN

Unlike single-step reactions, multi-step reactions can be greatly facilitated only if all the intermediate reactions can be catalyzed simultaneously and progressively. Herein, the theoretical analysis and experiments to illustrate the superiority of the cascade oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are conducted. As different OER intermediate reactions demand Fex Ni1-x OOH with altered Fe/Ni ratios, gradient Fe-doped NiOOH can be an ideal electrocatalyst for the efficient cascade OER in line. Fine controlling of the nucleation sequence of iron and nickel sulfides leads to a FeS2 @NiS2 core-shell structure. The activated outward diffusion of Fe dopants results in the gradient Fe/Ni ratios in the Fex Ni1-x OOH shell, where a cascade OER can happen. Electrochemical tests suggest that the FeS2 @NiS2 only needs an overpotential of 237 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm-2 , with fast reaction kinetics and good stability.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to investigate the role of lactic acid bacteria in patients with infertility caused by abnormal vaginal microecology and its related mechanisms and to provide evidence for the treatment of the disease. METHODS: A total of 100 infertile women with vaginal microecological disorders were selected as the research subjects. According to the treatment method, they were divided into a control group (50 cases of metronidazole) and an experimental group (50 cases of metronidazole + lactic acid bacteria capsules). Changes in vaginal secretions and inflammatory factors before and after treatment were detected, and the therapeutic effects of different treatment methods on vaginal symptoms and infertility were analysed. RESULTS: the proportion of patients with pH > 4.5 in the two groups after treatment decreased significantly, and the proportion in the experimental group (18%) was significantly lower than that in the control group (44%) (P < 0.01). The proportion of patients with grades II to III in the experimental group (92%) was significantly higher than that in the control group (68%) (P < 0.01). After treatment, the normal lactic acid bacteria count and H2O2 concentrations in the experimental group (80% and 84%) were significantly higher than those in the control group (18% and 62%), and the concentration of interleukin-2 (IL-2) was higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05), while interleukin-13 (IL-13) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). The total effective rate (96%) and pregnancy rate (26%) of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group (82% and 14%) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: lactic acid bacteria can reduce the vaginal pH value, regulate the H2O2 content and immune factor content, and improve the imbalance of the vaginal microecological environment, thereby increasing the pregnancy rate of patients, so it is of great clinical application value.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To investigate the feasibility and accuracy of near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging for detecting the extent of tumor invasion in cervical cancer using indocyanine green (ICG). METHODS: We enrolled 51 patients who were diagnosed with cervical cancer with FIGO stage IB1-IIA2 disease. Patients were administered indocyanine green (ICG) at a dose of 5 mg/kg 24 h prior to surgery. A customized near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging system was used to identify the extent of tumor invasion when radical hysterectomy specimens were harvested. The relationship between tumor fluorescence intensity and clinicopathological characteristics was analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 51 enrolled patients, 3 patients did not have residual tumors after cervical conization, and tumor lesions were identified by NIRF imaging in all the remaining 48 patients. The results of NIRF imaging were in agreement with the postoperative pathological findings in 95.8% of the patients with stromal invasion, 100% of those with surgical margin invasion, 100% of those with parametrial tumor involvement, and 100% of patients with uterine corpus invasion. The mean signal-to-background ratio (SBR) of the cervical tumors was 2.91 ± 1.64, and the SBR was independent of clinicopathological characteristics. Fluorescence microscopy confirmed that ICG fluorescence was present in the tumor nests. CONCLUSIONS: NIRF imaging enables objective, accurate, and safe identification of tumor invasion during cervical cancer surgery. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04224467.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To compare the oncological outcomes of patients with FIGO 2018 stage IIIC cervical cancer (CC) involving different local tumor factors who underwent abdominal radical hysterectomy (ARH), neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radical surgery (NACT), or radical chemoradiotherapy (R-CT). METHODS: Based on tumor staging, patients with stage IIIC were divided into T1, T2a, T2b, and T3 groups. Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis were used to compare their overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) of 5 years. RESULTS: We included 4,086 patients (1,117, 1,019, 869, and 1,081 in the T1, T2a, T2b, and T3 groups, respectively). In the T1 group, NACT was correlated with a decrease in OS (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.631, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.150-2.315, P = 0.006) and DFS (HR = 1.665, 95% CI: 1.255-2.182, P < 0.001) than ARH. ARH and NACT were not correlated with OS (P = 0.226 and P = 0.921) or DFS (P = 0.343 and P = 0.535) than R-CT. In the T2a group, NACT was correlated with a decrease in OS (HR = 1.454, 95% CI: 1.057-2.000, P = 0.021) and DFS (HR = 1.529, 95% CI: 1.185-1.974, P = 0.001) than ARH. ARH and NACT were not correlated with OS (P = 0.736 and P = 0.267) or DFS (P = 0.714 and P = 0.087) than R-CT. In the T2b group, NACT was correlated with a decrease in DFS (HR = 1.847, 95% CI: 1.347-2.532, P < 0.001) than R-CT nevertheless was not correlated with OS (P = 0.146); ARH was not correlated with OS (P = 0.056) and DFS (P = 0.676). In the T3 group, the OS rates of ARH (n = 10), NACT (n = 18), and R-CT (n = 1053) were 67.5%, 53.1%, and 64.7% (P = 0.941), and the DFS rates were 68.6%, 45.5%, and 61.1%, respectively (P = 0.761). CONCLUSION: R-CT oncological outcomes were not entirely superior to those of NACT or ARH under different local tumor factors with stage IIIC. NACT is not suitable for stage T1, T2a, and T2b. Nevertheless ARH is potentially applicable to stage T1, T2a, T2b and T3. The results of stage T3 require confirmation through further research due to disparity in case numbers in each subgroup.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can assess oxygenation and perfusion status in the placenta. We aimed to explore the differences in functional parameters between pregnancies complicated by fetal growth restriction (FGR) and small-for-gestational-age (SGA). METHODS: This was a prospective study. A pregnancy complicated by SGA was defined by prenatal ultrasonic estimated fetal weight (EFW) and a final birthweight < the 10th percentile. A pregnancy complicated by FGR was defined as a more severe subtype (ultrasonic EFW < the 3rd percentile or abnormal Doppler results). All pregnant women underwent T2* and intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) scans using a 3.0-T MRI scanner. Functional parameters in the control, SGA, and FGR groups, namely, the T2* Z score, apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), diffusion coefficient (D), pseudodiffusion coefficient (D*), and perfusion fraction (f), were calculated and compared. RESULTS: In total, 30 pregnancies complicated by SGA, 24 pregnancies complicated by FGR, and 28 control pregnancies were included in the final analysis. Oxygenation status, as assessed by the T2* Z score, was significantly lower in pregnancies complicated by FGR than in pregnancies complicated by SGA (p < 0.001). However, diffusion and perfusion parameters, including the ADC, D, D*, and f, were similar between pregnancies complicated by SGA and FGR (p > 0.05 for all). Compared to the control pregnancies, all the parameters were significantly decreased in the SGA and FGR groups, except for the D* value. The T2* Z score, ADC, and D values were negatively correlated with birthweight. CONCLUSION: Although both pregnancies complicated by SGA and FGR were associated with significantly lower oxygenation and perfusion than normal control pregnancies, placental hypoxia seemed to be more predominant in pregnancies complicated by FGR than in pregnancies complicated by SGA. KEY POINTS: • Pregnancy complicated by FGR was associated with a more severe type of hypoxia than pregnancy complicated by SGA. • The diffusion and perfusion parameters of pregnancies complicated by SGA and FGR were similar. • SGA may represent another growth disorder that is not entirely healthy.

RESUMEN

Polyvalent antibodies can resist multiple bacterial species, and immunoglobulin Y (IgY) antibody can be economically prepared in large quantities from egg yolk; further, IgY polyvalent antibodies have application value in aquaculture. The outer membrane proteins (OMPs) PF1380 and ExbB of Pseudomonas fluorescens were expressed and purified, and the corresponding IgY antibodies were prepared. PF1380, ExbB, and the corresponding IgY antibodies could activate the innate immune responses of chicken and Carassius auratus. The passive immunization to C. auratus showed that the IgY antibodies of PF1380 and ExbB had an immune protection rate, down-regulated the expression of antioxidant-related factors (MDA, SOD, GSH-Px, and CAT) to reduce the antioxidant reaction, down-regulated the expression of inflammation-related genes (IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, and IL-1ß) to reduce the inflammatory reaction, maintained the integrity of visceral tissue structure, and reduced apoptosis and damage of tissue cells in relation to P. fluorescens and Aeromonas hydrophila infections. Thus, the IgY antibodies of PF1380 and ExbB could be considered as passive polyvalent vaccine candidates in aquaculture.

RESUMEN

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common and lethal malignancies. According to our analysis in the GEPIA database, SPTBN2 was found to be significantly elevated in COAD patients.Western blot also verified this result, and SPTBN2 was highly expressed in two types of colorectal cancer cells, Caco2 and HCT-8. Therefore, we knocked down SPTBN2 to investigate its function in colorectal cancer, and the results of CCK-8 and Transwell assays showed that SPTBN2 deletion inhibited the proliferation, migration and invasion of CRC cells. In addition, we found that SPTBN2 may be a target of miR-214-3p through the staebase database. miR-214-3p inhibitors promote CRC cell proliferation, migration and invasion. And inhibition of SPTBN2 partially reversed the effect of miR-214-3p in CRC. Taken together, we demonstrated that SPTBN2 acts as an important target of miR-214-3p in CRC. Our study lays the foundation for the mechanism of CRC.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The area around the sacral promontory (SP) is the targeted location of various pelvic operations. We examined the internal iliac vein (IIV) configurations around the SP by computed tomography angiography (CTA) three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction to describe its anatomy and provide accurate anatomical parameters for relevant operations to reduce intraoperative vascular injury. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 2078 CTA 3D model datasets from Nanfang Hospital patients examined for gynecological diseases from December 2009 to October 2020. The IIVs of the above cases were divided into standard and variant IIVs, and variant IIVs were subdivided into different subtypes. To compare the size of the avascular area around the SP between standard and variant IIVs, we selected the two subtypes with the highest variation rate for comparison with the standard IIV type. RESULTS: The most common types of variant IIVs were 5a (5.15%) and 3a (5.05%). The results showed larger values in the standard group than in the 3a and 5a groups for the confluence of common iliac vein (CCIV) height (37.73±12.05 vs. 28.93±10.17 vs. 27.27±7.58 mm, P < 0.05), distance between the iliac vessels (49.47±9.47 mm vs. 37.08±9.36 vs. 37.73±8.94 mm, P < 0.05), and SP exposure width (44.94±6.39 mm vs. 36.83±8.29 vs. 36.93±7.91, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Variant IIVs may increase the risk of surgery by reducing the avascular area compared with standard IIVs. Therefore, when operating around the SP, special attention should be given to variant IIVs and avoiding vascular injury.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: FIGO 2018 IIIC remains controversial for the heterogeneity of its prognoses. To ensure a better management of cervical cancer patients in Stage IIIC, a revision of the FIGO IIIC version classification is required according to local tumor size. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled cervical cancer patients of FIGO 2018 Stages I-IIIC who had undergone radical surgery or chemoradiotherapy. Based on the tumor factors from the Tumor Node Metastasis staging system, IIIC cases were divided into IIIC-T1, IIIC-T2a, IIIC-T2b, and IIIC-(T3a+T3b). Oncologcial outcomes of all stages were compared. RESULTS: A total of 63 926 cervical cancer cases were identified, among which 9452 fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were included in this study. Kaplan-Meier pairwise analysis showed that: the oncology outcomes of I and IIA were significantly better than of IIB, IIIA+IIIB, and IIIC; the oncology outcome of IIIC-(T1-T2b) was significantly better than of IIIA+IIIB and IIIC-(T3a+T3b); no significant difference was noted between IIB and IIIC-(T1-T2b), or IIIC-(T3a+T3b) and IIIA+IIIB. Multivariate analysis indicated that, compared with IIIC-T1, Stages T2a, T2b, IIIA+IIIB and IIIC-(T3a+T3b) were associated with a higher risk of death and recurrence/death. There was no significant difference in the risk of death or recurrence/death between patients with IIIC-(T1-T2b) and IIB. Also, compared with IIB, IIIC-(T3a+T3b) was associated with a higher risk of death and recurrence/death. No significant differences in the risk of death and recurrence/death were noted between IIIC-(T3a+T3b) and IIIA+IIIB. CONCLUSIONS: In terms of oncology outcomes of the study, FIGO 2018 Stage IIIC of cervical cancer is unreasonable. Stages IIIC-T1, T2a, and T2b may be integrated as IIC, and it might be unnecessary for T3a/T3b cases to be subdivided by lymph node status.
