RESUMEN

We present a novel micro-fabrication technique for creating concave surfaces on the endfacets of photonic crystal fibers. A fiber fusion splicer is used to generate arc discharges to melt and reshape the fiber endfacet. This technique can produce large spherical concave surfaces with roughness as low as 0.12 nm in various types of photonic crystal fibers. The deviation of fabricated surface and a spherical profile in the region of 70 µm in diameter is less than 50 nm. The center of the concave surface and the fiber mode field are highly coincident with a deviation less than 500 nm. Finesse measurements have shown that a Fabry-Pérot cavity composed of the fiber fabricated using this method and a plane mirror maintains finesse of 20000. This method is easy to replicate, making it a practical and efficient approach to fabricate concave surface on fibers for open-access fiber Fabry-Pérot cavities.

RESUMEN

The development of the embryo sac is an important factor that affects seed setting in rice. Numerous genes associated with embryo sac (ES) development have been identified in plants; however, the function of the DEAD-box RNA helicase family genes is poorly known in rice. Here, we characterized a rice DEAD-box protein, RH52A, which is localized in the nucleus and cytoplasm and highly expressed in the floral organs. The knockout mutant rh52a displayed partial ES sterility, including degeneration of the ES (21%) and the presence of a double-female-gametophyte (DFG) structure (11.8%). The DFG developed from two functional megaspores near the chalazal end in one ovule, and 3.4% of DFGs were able to fertilize via the sac near the micropylar pole in rh52a. RH52A was found to interact with MFS1 and ZIP4, both of which play a role in homologous recombination in rice meiosis. RNA-sequencing identified 234 down-regulated differentially expressed genes associated with reproductive development, including two, MSP1 and HSA1b, required for female germline cell specification. Taken together, our study demonstrates that RH52A is essential for the development of the rice embryo sac and provides cytological details regarding the formation of DFGs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Angiogenesis is a critical step in colorectal cancer growth, progression and metastasization. CT are routine imaging examinations for preoperative clinical evaluation in colorectal cancer patients. This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of preoperative CT enhancement rate (CER) and CT perfusion parameters on angiogenesis in colorectal cancer, as well as the association of preoperative CER and CT perfusion parameters with serum markers. METHODS: This retrospective analysis included 42 patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma. Median of microvessel density (MVD) as the cut-off value, it divided 42 patients into high-density group (MVD ≥ 35/field, n = 24) and low-density group (MVD < 35/field, n = 18), and 25 patients with benign colorectal lesions were collected as the control group. Statistical analysis of CER, CT perfusion parameters, serum markers were performed in all groups. Receiver operating curves (ROC) were plotted to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of relevant CT perfusion parameters for tumor angiogenesis; Pearson correlation analysis explored potential association between CER, CT perfusion parameters and serum markers. RESULTS: CER, blood volume (BV), blood flow (BF), permeability surface (PS) and carbohydrate antigen 19 - 9 (CA19-9), carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), trefoil factor 3 (TFF3), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in colorectal adenocarcinoma were significantly higher than those in the control group, the parameters in high-density group were significantly higher than those in the low-density group (P < 0.05); however, the time to peak (TTP) of patients in colorectal adenocarcinoma were significantly lower than those in the control group, and the high-density group showed a significantly lower level compared to the low-density group (P < 0.05). The combined parameters BF + TTP + PS and BV + BF + TTP + PS demonstrated the highest area under the curve (AUC), both at 0.991. Pearson correlation analysis showed that the serum levels of CA19-9, CA125, CEA, TFF3, and VEGF in patients showed positive correlations with CER, BV, BF, and PS (P < 0.05), while these indicators exhibited negative correlations with TTP (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Some single and joint preoperative CT perfusion parameters can accurately predict tumor angiogenesis in colorectal adenocarcinoma. Preoperative CER and CT perfusion parameters have certain association with serum markers.

RESUMEN

Excessive bone resorption caused by upregulated osteoclast activity is a key factor in osteoporosis pathogenesis. Farrerol is a typical natural flavanone and exhibits various pharmacological actions. However, the role and mechanism of action of farrerol in osteoclast differentiation regulation remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effects and mechanism of farrerol on the inhibition of osteoclastogenesis. Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase staining, F-actin staining, and the pit formation assay were performed to examine the differentiation and functions of osteoclasts in vitro. The expression of proteins associated with the nuclear factor kappa B and mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathways was analyzed by western blotting. Dual X-ray absorptiometry, microcomputed tomography, and histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses were performed to determine the therapeutic effect of farrerol in vivo bone loss prevention. The effects of farrerol on osteoblastic bone formation were assessed using alkaline phosphatase, alizarin red S staining, and calcein-alizarin red S double labeling. Farrerol inhibited osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption in osteoclasts by suppressing nuclear factor kappa B signaling rather than mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling in vitro. Farrerol protected mice against ovariectomy-induced bone loss by inhibiting osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, instead of promoting osteoblast-mediated bone formation in vivo. The findings of the current study revealed that farrerol is a potential therapeutic agent for osteoporosis.

RESUMEN

Hereditary predisposition play an important role in thrombosis, especially in younger patients. Here we studied a young patient who experienced three different episodes of severe thromboses, some of which were life-threatening (pulmonary artery thrombosis, portal and mesenteric vein thrombosis, and arterial thrombosis of the lower leg). Blood levels of clotting related indicators were assessed. We screened 35 genes linked to thrombosis. We discovered a 756 kb duplication that spanned the F9 gene in region q27.1 of the X chromosome. The repeat includes the full F9 gene, thus, the patient had two functional copies of FIX with the FIX activity 192%. An identical repetition was found in the patient's mother. Both the patient and his mother had high, but variable, plasma FIX activities that promote coagulation. The patient's frequent, severe thrombolic events maybe attributed to the duplication of a big portion of the F9 gene and lupus anticoagulant positive.

RESUMEN

Based on the dye/salts separation efficiency and membrane injury caused by serious pollution of dye/salts wastewater, this study constructed a 2D tight ultrafiltration membrane that could both solve the membrane injury problem and improve the dye/salts separation efficiency, the compatibility of good self-healing performance and penetration performance by 2D material magnesium-aluminum Layered double hydroxide (MgAl-LDH). The self-repairing of physical injury was achieved through the swelling effect of AMPS-PAN, this property was proved by permeate flux, the retention performance of salts in dye/salts solution, the comparison of scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the mechanical strength after physical injury. The healing of chemical injury occured through the reaction of CC and polyethersulfone chain breakage, which was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), permeate flux, the retention performance of salts in dye/salts solution, and mechanical property. The high separation efficiency of dye/salts was achieved through 2D material MgAl-LDH, which was proved by separation selectivity ɑ. The compatibility of good self-healing performance and penetration performance was obtained by 2D material MgAl-LDH, which was proved by the penetration and self-healing performance. Morever, the membrane illustrated excellent both permeability and dye/sals separation efficiency, just like the permeate flux, the retention performance of sodium sulfate in methyl blue/sodium sulfate solution, the retention performance of Na2SO4 in methyl blue/Na2SO4 solution, the retention rate of methyl blue were 99.1 L/m2h, 12.5%, 7.9%, 97.7%, respectively. The results of pollution index and contact angle also proved that the membrane had anti-pollution performance.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The study aims to compare morphology and location of crystalline lens between acute acquired concomitant esotropia (AACE) patients and control subjects, both before and after cycloplegia. METHODS: This is a prospective and observational clinical study. Morphological and locational parameters of the crystalline lens in 53 AACE patients and 32 control subjects were assessed before and after cycloplegia using CASIA2 system, which represents the latest swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomography. Cycloplegic refraction was recorded by administering 1% atropine in patients younger than 12 years and 1% cyclopentolate in those > 12 years old. Morphological parameters included anterior radius of curvature (ARC), posterior radius of curvature (PRC), lens thickness (LTH), and equivalent diameter of lens (LED). Locational parameters comprised lens decentration (LD) and lens tilt (LT). Comparison of these parameters before and after cycloplegia were conducted between AACE and controls. Additionally, the study analyzed and compared the changes in these parameter post-cycloplegia. RESULTS: Our findings suggest no significant difference in morphological parameters including ARC, PRC, LTH and LED between AACE patients and controls before or after cycloplegia. However, 2D-modeling data in the 0° meridian revealed that variation post-cycloplegia of LD (lens shift) in right eyes was different in AACE patients, measuring - 0.03(0.08) [median(interquartile range)] which was significantly distinct from the control group, exhibiting a measurement of 0.01(0.06) (z = - 2.373, p = 0.018). In left eyes, a similar trend was observed with lens shift in the 0° meridian being 0.02(0.06) in AACE, significantly differing from control group's measurement of - 0.02(0.08) (z = - 2.809, p = 0.005). Further, correlation analysis revealed that larger temporal shift of lens was associated with greater changes in ARC (r = 0.294, p = 0.006) and LTH (r = - 0.230, p = 0.031). CONCLUSIONS: The morphological features of the crystalline lens were similar in AACE patients and controls; however, the change of lens location by cycloplegia was observed only in AACE patients, suggesting an association with excessive accommodation.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the predictive value of one-stop energy spectrum and perfusion CT parameters for microvessel density (MVD) in colorectal cancer cancer foci. METHODS: Clinical and CT data of 82 patients with colorectal cancer confirmed by preoperative colonoscopy or surgical pathology in our hospital from September 2019 to November 2022 were collected and analyzed retrospectively. Energy spectrum CT images were measured using the Protocols general module of the GSI Viewer software of the GE AW 4.7 post-processing workstation to measure the CT values of the arterial and venous phase lesions and the neighboring normal intestinal wall in a single energy range of 40 kev∼140 kev, and the slopes of the energy spectrum curves (λ) were calculated between 40 kev-90 kev; Iodine concentration (IC), Water concentration (WC), Effective-Z (Eff-Z) and Normalized iodine concentration (NIC) were measured by placing a region of interest (ROI) on the iodine concentration map and water concentration map at the lesion and adjacent to the normal intestinal wall.Perfusion CT images were scanned continuously and dynamically using GSI Perfusion software and analyzed by applying CT Perfusion 4.0 software.Blood volume (BV), blood flow (BF), surface permeability (PS), time to peak (TTP), and mean transit time (MTT) were measured respectively in the lesion and adjacent normal colorectal wall. Based on the pathological findings, the tumors were divided into a low MVD group (MVD < 35/field of view, n = 52 cases) and a high MVD group (MVD ≥ 35/field of view, n = 30 cases) using a median of 35/field of view as the MVD grouping criterion. The collected data were statistically analyzed, the subjects' operating characteristic curve (ROC) was plotted, and the area under curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, and Yoden index were calculated for the predicted efficacy of each parameter of the energy spectrum and perfusion CT and the combined parameters. RESULTS: The CT values, IC, NIC, λ, Eff-Z of 40kev∼140kev single energy in the arterial and venous phase of colorectal cancer in the high MVD group were higher than those in the low MVD group, and the differences were all statistically significant (p < 0.05). The AUC of each single-energy CT value in the arterial phase from 40 kev to 120 kev for determining the high or low MVD of colorectal cancer was greater than 0.8, indicating that arterial stage has a good predictive value for high or low MVD in colorectal cancer; AUC for arterial IC, NIC and IC + NIC were all greater than 0.9, indicating that in arterial colorectal cancer, both single and combined parameters of spectral CT are highly effective in predicting the level of MVD. The AUC of 40 kev to 90 kev single-energy CT values in the intravenous phase was greater than 0.9, and its diagnostic efficacy was more representative; The AUC of IC and NIC in venous stage were greater than 0.8, which indicating that the IC and NIC energy spectrum parameters in venous stage colorectal cancer have a very good predictive value for the difference between high and low MVDs, with the greatest diagnostic efficacy in IC.The values of BV and BF in the high MVD group were higher than those in the low MVD group, and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05), and the AUC of BF, BV, and BV + BF were 0.991, 0.733, and 0.997, respectively, with the highest diagnostic efficacy for determining the level of MVD in colorectal cancer by BV + BF. CONCLUSION: One-stop CT energy spectrum and perfusion imaging technology can accurately reflect the MVD in living tumor tissues, which in turn reflects the tumor angiogenesis, and to a certain extent helps to determine the malignancy, invasion and metastasis of living colorectal cancer tumor tissues based on CT energy spectrum and perfusion parameters.

RESUMEN

Carbon-based materials have been utilized as effective catalysts for hydrogen peroxide electrosynthesis via two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e ORR), however the insufficient selectivity and productivity still hindered the further industrial applications. In this work, we report the Fe-O4 motif activated graphitic carbon material which enabled highly selective H2O2 electrosynthesis operating at high current density with excellent anti-poisoning property. In the bulk production test, the concentration of H2O2 cumulated to 8.6 % in 24 h and the corresponding production rate of 33.5 mol gcat -1 h-1 outperformed all previously reported materials. Theoretical model backed by in situ characterization verified α-C surrounding the Fe-O4 motif as the actual reaction site in terms of thermodynamics and kinetics aspects. The strategy of activating carbon reaction site by metal center via oxo-bridge provides inspiring insights for the rational design of carbon materials for heterogeneous catalysis.

RESUMEN

Radioresistance remains a major obstacle to efficacious radiotherapy in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). DNA replication proteins are novel targets for radiosensitizers. POLQ is a DNA polymerase involved in DNA damage response and repair. We found that POLQ is overexpressed in NSCLC and is clinically correlated with high tumor stage, poor prognosis, increased tumor mutational burden, and ALK and TP5 mutation status; POLQ inhibition impaired lung tumorigenesis. Notably, POLQ expression was higher in radioresistant lung cancer cells than in wild-type cancer cells. Moreover, POLQ expression was further increased in radioresistant cells after radiation. Enhanced radioresistance is through a prolonged G2/M phase and faster repair of DNA damage, leading to reduced radiation-induced apoptosis. Novobiocin (NVB), a POLQ inhibitor, specifically targeted cancer cells. Genetic knockdown of POLQ or pharmacological inhibition by NVB decreased radioresistance in lung adenocarcinoma while causing little toxicity to normal pulmonary epithelial cells. In conclusion, POLQ is a promising and practical cancer-specific target to impair tumorigenesis and enhance radiosensitivity in NSCLC.

RESUMEN

A new iridium(III) complex was synthesized and characterized. Its photophysical properties and aggregation-induced emission and electrochemiluminescence in the near-infrared range were studied. The large conjugated cyclometallic ligand 1,2-phenylbenzoquinoline (pbq) was selected to form the Ir-C bond with the metal iridium(III) center and provide near-infrared emission of the complex. The auxiliary ligand 4,4'-diamino-2,2'-bipyridine (dabpy) can form hydrogen bonds, which was beneficial for the generation of aggregation-induced emission. The complex was aggregated into small spherical nanoparticles in 80% water and fascinating nanorings in 90% water. The sensing of ampicillin sodium (AMP) antibiotic by the iridium(III) complex were also investigated by photoluminescent and electrochemiluminescent methods. The complex showed a good selectivity toward AMP antibiotic compared to sodium phenylacetate and other eight antibiotics. The detection limits for AMP antibiotic was 0.76 µg/mL. This work provided a new strategy for the design of iridium(III) complex-based aggregation-induced emission and electrochemiluminescence probes for the sensing application.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Noninvasive right ventricular (RV) myocardial work (RVMW) determined by echocardiography is a novel indicator used to estimate RV systolic function. To date, the feasibility of using RVMW has not been verified in assessing RV function in patients with atrial septal defect (ASD). METHODS: Noninvasive RVMW was analysed in 29 ASD patients (median age, 49 years; 21% male) and 29 age- and sex-matched individuals without cardiovascular disease. The ASD patients underwent echocardiography and right heart catheterization (RHC) within 24 h. RESULTS: The RV global work index (RVGWI), RV global constructive work (RVGCW), and RV global wasted work (RVGWW) were significantly higher in the ASD patients than in the controls, while there was no significant difference in RV global work efficiency (RVGWE). RV global longitudinal strain (RV GLS), RVGWI, RVGCW, and RVGWW demonstrated significant correlations with RHC-derived stroke volume (SV) and SV index. The RVGWI (area under receiver operating characteristic curve [AUC] = 0.895), RVGCW (AUC = 0.922), and RVGWW (AUC = 0.870) could be considered good predictors of ASD and were superior to RV GLS (AUC = 0.656). CONCLUSION: The RVGWI, RVGCW, and RVGWW could be used to assess RV systolic function and are correlated with RHC-derived SV and SV index in patients with ASD.

RESUMEN

A microscope usually consists of dozens of complex lenses and requires careful assembly, alignment, and testing before use. Chromatic aberration correction is a significant step in the design of microscopes. Reducing chromatic aberration by improving optical design will inevitably increase the overall weight and size of the microscope, leading to more cost in manufacturing and maintenance. Nevertheless, the improvement in hardware can only achieve limited correction. In this paper, we propose an algorithm based on cross-channel information alignment to shift some of the correction tasks from optical design to post-processing. Additionally, a quantitative framework is established to evaluate the performance of the chromatic aberration algorithm. Our algorithm outperforms the other state-of-the-art methods in both visual appearance and objective assessments. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm can effectively obtain higher-quality images without changing the hardware or engaging the optical parameters.

RESUMEN

LncRNAs are emerging as important regulators of gene expression by controlling transcription in the nucleus and by modulating mRNA translation in the cytoplasm. In this study, we reveal a novel function of lncRNA SNHG15 in mediating breast cancer cell invasion through regulating the local translation of CDH2 mRNA. We show that SNHG15 preferentially localizes at the cellular protrusions or cell leading edge and that this localization is directed by IMP1, a multifunctional protein involved in many aspects of RNA regulation. We demonstrate that SNHG15 also forms a complex with nucleolin, allowing nucleolin to be co-transported with SNHG15 to the cell protrusions, where the accumulated nucleolin is able to bind to CDH2 mRNA. Interaction with nucleolin stabilizes local CDH2 mRNA and regulates its translation, thus promoting cell invasive potential. Our findings reveal an underlying mechanism by which lncRNA could serve as a carrier to transport a protein regulator into a specific cell compartment to enhance target mRNA expression.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the value of preoperative CT energy spectrum imaging in detecting lymph node metastasis of colorectal cancer. METHODS: From September 2019 to November 2021, a retrospective study was performed for the eighty-two patients with colorectal cancer through preoperative colonoscopy or surgical pathology confirmed in our hospital. Based on the lymph node metastasis status, these cases were divided into the metastasis and non-metastasis groups. GE Revolution CT scanner was used to scan the patients with energy spectrum imaging, it measured and recorded the single-energy CT values from 40 to 140 keV and various energy spectrum parameters of lymph nodes around the lesions in the arterial and venous phases, and statistically analyze the above indices. RESULTS: In the arterial and venous phases: the single-energy CT values of 40-140 keV in the non-metastatic group were higher than those in the metastatic group (all P < 0.05); the parameter values of IC (iodine concentration), NIC (normalized iodine concentration), λ (the slope of the energy spectrum curve), and Eff-Z (effective-Z) in the non-metastatic group were higher than those in the metastatic group (all P < 0.05). Further evaluation of ROC curve showed that the higher AUC (area under curve) of the single-energy CT value of 50 keV in the arterial phase was 0.889, among the energy spectrum parameters of IC, NIC, λ, and Eff-Z, the NIC had the better diagnostic efficiency and the AUC of the NIC was 0.873, the highest AUC of the combination of NIC and λ was 0.885 when the energy spectrum parameters were combined. The higher AUC of the single-energy CT value of 60 keV in the venous phase was 0.853, among the energy spectrum parameters of IC, NIC, λ, and Eff-Z, the λ had the better diagnostic efficiency and the AUC of the λ was 0.822, the higher AUC of the combination of NIC, λ, and Eff-Z was 0.840 when the energy spectra were combined. CONCLUSIONS: Parameters of energy spectrum CT imaging can effectively evaluate whether lymph nodes have metastases, and provide favorable imaging diagnosis basis for the range and the number of lymph nodes to be cleaned during clinical operation and can evaluate the prognosis of patients. It is worthy of clinical recommendation.

RESUMEN

As the scale of foundation pit projects of subway stations in Shenzhen becomes larger, and the construction constraints become more and more complex, there is an urgent need for intelligent monitoring and safety management of foundation pits. In this study, an integrated intelligent approach for monitoring and management of a deep foundation pit in a subway station was proposed and a case study based on the Waterlands Resort East Station Project of Shenzhen Metro Line 12 was used for validation. The present study first proposed the path of intelligent foundation pit engineering. Based on geotechnical survey and building information modeling, a three-dimensional transparent geological model of foundation pit was constructed. Multi-source sensing technologies were integrated, including micro electromechanical system sensing technology, Brillouin optical frequency domain analysis sensing technology, an unmanned aerial vehicle and machine vision for real-time high-precision wireless monitoring of the foundation pit. Moreover, machine learning models were developed for predicting key parameters of foundation pits. Finally, a digital twin integrated platform was developed for the management of the subway foundation pit in both construction and maintenance phases. This typical case study is expected to improve the construction, maintenance and management level of foundation pits in subway stations.

RESUMEN

To study the effects of nanocrystallisation technology on the intestinal absorption properties and antibacterial activity of florfenicol (FF). The florfenicol nanocrystals (FF-NC) were prepared by wet grinding and spray drying. Additionally, changes in particle size, charge, morphology, and dissolution of FF-NC in the long-term stability were monitored by laser particle sizer, TEM, SEM, paddle method, and the structure of FF-NC powder was characterised by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) test. The antibacterial activity, intestinal absorption and intestinal histocompatibility of FF-NC were investigated by the stiletto, mini broth dilution susceptibility test, in situ single-pass intestinal perfusion (SPIP) and haematoxylin-eosin (H-E) staining. After 12 months of storage, the particle size and zeta potential of FF-NC were 280.43 ± 8.21 nm and -19.64 ± 3.45 mV, and the electron microscopy results showed that FF-NC were nearly circular with no adhesion between particles. In addition, the drug loading, encapsulation efficiency, and dissolution of FF-NC did not change significantly during storage. The inhibition zone of FF-NC against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was 21.37 ± 1.70 mm and 25.17 ± 2.47 mm, respectively. Compared with the FF, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of FF-NC are reduced, and the absorption rate constant (Ka) and efficient permeability coefficient (Peff) of FF-NC in the three intestinal segments were increased by 1.28, 0.25, and 9.10 times and 0.59, 0.17, and 6.0 times, respectively. The results of tissue sections showed that FF-NC had little damage to the small intestinal. Nanocrystallisation technology is an effective method to increase the intestinal absorption and antibacterial activity of FF.

RESUMEN

GDF15 has been recently recognized as a tumor-suppressive gene. However, the underlying mechanism by which GDF15 affects breast carcinogenesis is not well understood. Here, we showed that the inhibitory effect of GDF15 on cell proliferation was dependent on the nuclear localization of the protein. Dynamic translocation of GDF15 into the nucleus altered expression of a number of genes, including KISS-1, and resulted in inhibition of cell growth and invasive behavior. Using KISS-1 promoter-driven luciferase reporter and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays, we demonstrated that, in highly malignant breast cancer cells, GDF15 directly interacts with specific protein-1 (Sp1) at the Sp1-binding sites of the KISS-1 promoter, leading to upregulated KISS-1 expression. Our study indicates that nuclear GDF15 could serve as a transcriptional coactivator to mediate the expression of particular genes to reduce cell proliferation.

RESUMEN

Young children with liver cirrhosis have a significantly high risk of mortality. However, there are few studies regarding early childhood-onset cirrhosis. This study aims to explore the causes, clinical findings and prognosis of biopsy-proven cirrhosis in infants, toddlers and preschoolers. We enroled young children with biopsy-proven cirrhosis from January 2010. Till January 2020, the study has been going on for 10 years. A total of 139 cirrhotic children were enrolled, including 87 boys and 52 girls. The median age at initially histological diagnosis of cirrhosis was 2 years old (range: 1 month-6 years). Sixty-two patients reported yellowish discoloration of sclera and/or skin as an initial symptom. Ninety-three patients had definite aetiologies while 46 had indeterminate causes. Among the confirmed cases, 31 had hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, accounting for 33.3%. Subsequently, glycogen storage disease was diagnosed in 16 cases and Wilson disease in 14 cases. In these patients with HBV infection, nine finally achieved hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) loss (29.0%) after effective antiviral therapy during the follow-up. Logistic regression revealed that baseline alanine aminotransferase (odds ratio 1.008, p = 0.028) was the independent predictor of HBsAg loss. Furthermore, one patient who underwent second biopsies showed histological reverse. HBV infection is an important cause of paediatric cirrhosis in our study. The pathogenesis of HBV-related cirrhosis in early childhood deserves further studies.

RESUMEN

Aphidius gifuensis Ashmaed is a generalist endoparasitoid that parasitizes a variety of aphid species. In China, it is widely used as a biological control agent to protect vegetables and tobaccos in open fields; control efficiency is largely dependent on its host-seeking ability. In this study, a six-choice olfactometer was used to investigate the olfactory responses of A. gifuensis to tobacco plants that had suffered damage (either varying degrees of mechanical damage or from aphid-feeding at different time intervals) and tobacco volatiles with different dosages. Furthermore, the regularity of A. gifuensis females' response toward an aphid/tobacco complex was monitored using a Y-tube olfactometer. Our findings suggest that tobacco plants are significantly attractive to A. gifuensis after they have been punctured with 50 holes, or housed with Myzus persicae (Sulzer) at a density of 400 aphids, except at an infestation time of 12 h. Moreover, aphid density had a more significant effect on the response than the time interval since aphid application. Aphidius gifuensis was found to be active during the daytime and preferred to search for their aphid hosts at 14:00 h. Five EAG-active tobacco volatiles (trans-2-hexenal, methyl salicylate, benzaldehyde, cis-3-hexen-1-ol, and 1-hexanal) were found to significantly attract A. gifuensis females at different concentration ranges. The practical implications of these results are discussed in the framework of the sustainable biological control of pest aphids in agricultural production systems.
