BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have contributed to a significant advancement in the treatment of cancer, leading to improved clinical outcomes in many individuals with advanced disease. Both preclinical and clinical investigations have shown that ICIs are associated with atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular events; however, the exact mechanism underlying this relationship has not been clarified. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with stages III or IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) at the Wuhan Union Hospital from March 1, 2020, to April 30, 2022, were included in this retrospective study. Coronary artery calcium (CAC) volume and score were assessed in a subset of patients during non-ECG-gated chest CT scans at baseline and 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed in a 1:1 ratio to balance the baseline characteristics between the two groups. RESULTS: Overall, 1458 patients (487 with ICI therapy and 971 without ICI therapy) were enrolled in this cardiovascular cohort study. After PSM, 446 patients were included in each group. During the entire period of follow-up (median follow-up 23.1 months), 24 atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) events (4.9%) occurred in the ICI group, and 14 ASCVD events (1.4%) in the non-ICI group, before PSM; 24 ASCVD events (5.4%) occurred in the ICI group and 5 ASCVD events (1.1%) in the non-ICI group after PSM. The CAC imaging study group comprised 113 patients with ICI therapy and 133 patients without ICI therapy. After PSM, each group consisted of 75 patients. In the ICI group, the CAC volume/score increased from 93.4 mm3/96.9 (baseline) to 125.1 mm3/132.8 (at 12 months). In the non-ICI group, the CAC volume/score was increased from 70.1 mm3/68.8 (baseline) to 84.4 mm3/87.9 (at 12 months). After PSM, the CAC volume/score was increased from 85.1 mm3/76.4 (baseline) to 111.8 mm3/121.1 (12 months) in the ICI group and was increased from 74.9 mm3/76.8 (baseline) to 109.3 mm3/98.7 (12 months) in the non-ICI group. Both cardiovascular events and CAC progression were increased after the initiation of ICIs. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with ICIs was associated with a higher rate of ASCVD events and a noticeable increase in CAC progression.

Converting hierarchical biomass structure into cutting-edge architecture of electrocatalysts can effectively relieve the extreme dependency of nonrenewable fossil-fuel-resources typically suffering from low cost-effectiveness, scarce supplies, and adverse environmental impacts. A cost-effective cobalt-coordinated nanocellulose (CNF) strategy is reported for realizing a high-performance 2e-ORR electrocatalysts through molecular engineering of hybrid ZIFs-CNF architecture. By a coordination and pyrolysis process, it generates substantial oxygen-capturing active sites within the typically oxygen-insulating cellulose, promoting O2 mass and electron transfer efficiency along the nanostructured Co3O4 anchored with CNF-based biochar. The Co-CNF electrocatalyst exhibits an exceptional H2O2 electrosynthesis efficiency of ≈510.58 mg L-1 cm-2 h-1 with an exceptional superiority over the existing biochar-, or fossil-fuel-derived electrocatalysts. The combination of the electrocatalysts with stainless steel mesh serving as a dual cathode can strongly decompose regular organic pollutants (up to 99.43% removal efficiency by 30 min), showing to be a desirable approach for clean environmental remediation with sustainability, ecological safety, and high-performance.

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), has partly improved congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) outcomes, yet the overall morbidity and mortality remain high. Existing prenatal indicators for CDH fetuses are operator-dependent, time-consuming, or less accurate, a new simple and accurate indicator to indicate adverse events in CDH patients is needed. PURPOSE: To propose and assess the association of a new MRI parameter, the relative mediastinal displacement index (RMDI), with adverse events including in-hospital deaths or the need for ECMO in fetuses with isolated left CDH (iLCDH). STUDY TYPE: Retrospective analysis. SUBJECTS: One hundred thirty-nine fetuses were included in the iLCDH group (24 with adverse events and 115 without) and 257 fetuses were included in the control group from two centers in Guangzhou. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3.0 T, T2WI-TRUFI; 1.5 T, T2WI-FIESTA. ASSESSMENT: Three operators independently measured the → DL $$ \underset{\mathrm{DL}}{\to } $$ , → DR $$ \underset{\mathrm{DR}}{\to } $$ , and DH on the axial images. The calculation formula of the RMDI was ( → DL $$ \underset{\mathrm{DL}}{\to } $$ + → DR $$ \underset{\mathrm{DR}}{\to } $$ )/DH . STATISTICAL TESTS: The independent sample t test, Mann-Whitney U test, Chi-square test, Chi-square test continuity correction, Fisher's test, linear regression analysis, logistic regression analysis, intraclass correlation coefficient, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, and Delong test. A P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The RMDI did not change with gestational age in the iLCDH group (with [P = 0.189] and without [P = 0.567] adverse events) and the control group (P = 0.876). There were significant differences in RMDI between the iLCDH group (0.89 [0.65, 1.00]) and the control group (-0.23 [-0.34, -0.16]). In the iLCDH group, RMDI was the only indicator left for indicating adverse events, and the best cutoff value was 1.105. Moreover, there was a significant difference in diagnostic accuracy between the RMDI (AUC = 0.900) and MSA (AUC = 0.820), LHR (AUC = 0.753), o/e LHR (AUC = 0.709), and o/e TFLV (AUC = 0.728), respectively. DATA CONCLUSION: The RMDI is expected to be a simple and accurate tool for indicating adverse events in fetuses with iLCDH. EVIDENCE LEVEL: 4 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 1.

Stabilization of a G-quadruplex (G4) in the promotor of the c-MYC proto-oncogene leads to inhibition of gene expression, and it thus represents a potentially attractive new strategy for cancer treatment. However, most G4 stabilizers show little selectivity among the many G4s present in the cellular complement of DNA and RNA. Intriguingly, a crescent-shaped cell-penetrating thiazole peptide, TH3, preferentially stabilizes the c-MYC G4 over other promotor G4s, but the mechanisms leading to this selective binding remain obscure. To investigate these mechanisms at the atomic level, we performed an in silico comparative investigation of the binding of TH3 and its analogue TH1 to the G4s from the promotors of c-MYC, c-KIT1, c-KIT2, and BCL2. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations, combined with in-depth analyses of non-covalent interactions and bulk and per-nucleotide binding free energies, revealed that both TH3 and TH1 can induce the formation of a sandwich-like framework through stacking with both the top and bottom G-tetrads of the c-MYC G4 and the adjacent terminal capping nucleotides. This framework produces enhanced binding affinities for c-MYC G4 relative to other promotor G4s, with TH3 exhibiting an outstanding binding priority. Van der Waals interactions were identified to be the key factor in complex formation in all cases. Collectively, our findings fully agree with available experimental data. Therefore, the identified mechanisms leading to specific binding of TH3 towards c-MYC G4 provide valuable information to guide the development of new selective G4 stabilizers.

When a laser carrying image information is transmitted in seawater, the presence of ocean turbulence leads to significant degradation of the received information due to the effect of interference. To address this issue, we propose a deep-learning-based method to retrieve the original information from a degraded pattern. To simulate the propagation of laser beams in ocean turbulence, a model of an ocean turbulence phase screen based on the power spectrum inversion method is used. The degraded images with different turbulence conditions are produced based on the model. A Pix2Pix network architecture is built to acquire the original image information. The results indicate that the network can realize high-fidelity image recovery under various turbulence conditions based on the degraded patterns. However, as turbulence strength and transmission distance increase, the reconstruction accuracy of the Pix2Pix network decreases. To further improve the image reconstruction ability of neural network architectures, we established three networks (U-Net, Pix2Pix, and Deep-Pix2Pix) and compared their performance in retrieving the degraded patterns. Overall, the Pix2Pix network showed the best performance for image reconstruction.

Body surface area (BSA) is widely used for adjusting drug dose, while few studies have yet systematically evaluated its association with osteoporosis and compared its advantage with other anthropometric parameters in osteoporotic risk prediction. A total of 10,021 Chinese individuals aged over 65 years were enrolled in our study. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured, and demographic information was also collected. Pearson correlation analysis, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and predictive analysis were performed to assess the clinical practice of BSA for osteoporosis. BSA had the strongest correlation with BMD (0.544, p < 0.001) compared with conventional anthropometric indices. Besides, BSA had the highest power in osteoporosis prediction, with an area under the curve (AUC) reaching 0.81. After incorporating BSA into the osteoporosis risk prediction model, the AUC improved from 0.82 to 0.83 (p < 0.01). We found BSA provided additional diagnostic value beyond conventional anthropometric information with continuous and category NRIs were 30.40% (p < 0.01) and 3.29% (p < 0.01), respectively, and the IDI was 1.85% (p < 0.01). BSA was positively associated with osteoporosis and showed superior discriminative ability for osteoporosis risk prediction compared with other anthropometric parameters in the Chinese elderly population.

BACKGROUND: Both obesity and chronic kidney disease (CKD) contribute to osteoporosis risk, but the effect of a newly developed index (e.g., a body shape index, ABSI) of central obesity and its interaction with low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) on osteoporosis remains unknown. METHODS: A total of 2534 Chinese individuals were enrolled in our ongoing cohort study: Osteoporosis Preventive Project. ABSI and eGFR were calculated as obesity-related indexes and renal function markers, respectively. A logistic regression model was used to estimate the association between osteoporosis and related clinical parameters (e.g., ABSI, eGFR), and to assess the additive and multiplicative interactions between risk factors and osteoporosis. Relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion due to interaction (AP) and synergy index (SI) were calculated to assess the additive interaction. RESULTS: High ABSI was significantly associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis in participants compared with the lowest quartile of ABSI in both crude and adjusted models. Individuals in the lower quartiles of eGFR had a significantly increased risk of osteoporosis compared with those in the highest quartiles in crude models. After adding age and other variables in the model, the association was abolished. In addition, after adjusting for variables, high ABSI with low eGFR (RERI: 0.45, 95% CI: 0.15-0.75; AP: 0.39, 95% CI: 0.17-0.60) still displayed a noticeable interaction on the risk of osteoporosis. The multiplicative interactive effect between high ABSI with low eGFR on osteoporosis was statistically significant in the multivariable-adjusted model (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our study indicated that higher ABSI increases the risk of osteoporosis independently and synergistically with low eGFR in Chinese elderly adults. The findings increase our understanding of the interactions of osteoporosis risk factors and may help provide potential interventions for osteoporosis.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the short- and long-term efficacies as well as tolerability of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) for the patients with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) in comparison with status at baseline. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a specific and systematic search in online data bases for relevant literature published prior to December 2020. The literature retrieved, including randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and observational studies, were then reviewed and analyzed. A fixed-effect model was used to evaluate the pooled odds ratio (OR) of responder rates and complications associated with RCTs. A random-effect model was used to generate overall responder rates and overall incidences of complication. RESULTS: A total of 61 studies, featuring 5223 patients, were included in our study. The pooled ORs of responder rates, hoarseness/voice change, throat pain, coughing, dyspnea, paresthesia, muscle pain, and headache during the short-term phase were 2.195 (p = 0.001), 5.527 (p = 0.0001), 0.935 (p = 0.883), 1.119 (p = 0.655), 2.901 (p = 0.005), 1.775 (p = 0.061), 3.606 (p = 0.123), and 0.928 (p = 0.806), respectively. The overall responder rates in 3, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 months postoperatively were 0.421, 0.455, 0.401, 0.451, 0.482, 0.502, and 0.508, respectively. The overall incidences of complication were 0.274 for hoarseness/voice change, 0.099 for throat pain, 0.133 for coughing, 0.099 for dyspnea, 0.102 for paresthesia, 0.062 for muscle pain, 0.101 for headache, 0.015 for dysphagia, 0.013 for neck pain, 0.040 for infection, 0.030 for lead fracture, 0.019 for vocal cord palsy, and 0.020 for device malfunction, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The estimating of efficacy and tolerability, using data from the existing literature, indicated VNS therapy is a safe and effective treatment option for patients with DRE.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Accurate serological assays are desirable for the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We identify an antigen-like substance called Crohn's disease (CD) antibody binding polypeptide (CABP). As a serological marker, anti-CABP may contribute to the diagnosis of IBD. The present study aims to evaluate the clinical role of anti-CABP as a serological antibody for IBD. METHODS: Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), serum anti-CABP, anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibody (ASCA) and perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (pANCA), titers were tested in 168 CD patients, 123 ulcerative colitis (UC) patients and 170 controls. The correlation between serum antibody and clinical characteristics was investigated. The diagnostic potential of the anti-CABP was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. RESULTS: The titers of anti-CABP (IgA or IgG) and ASCA IgG of CD patients were significantly higher than non-CD group (all p < .01). In the differential diagnosis of CD and non-CD, anti-CABP IgA revealed an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.706 and anti-CABP IgG demonstrated an AUC of 0.788. As an individual antibody, anti-CABP could effectively distinguish CD from non-CD (AUC 0.816), and the diagnostic efficacy was better than that of ASCA (AUC 0.680). The combined use of anti-CABP, ASCA and pANCA significantly improved the diagnostic value (AUC 0.857). Anti-CABP positive rates were associated with perianal lesions and disease location in CD patients (both p < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that anti-CABP could be used as a serological marker to assist the diagnosis of CD. Carbon nanodots (CDs) anchored onto inorganic supporter (amorphous nanosilica, SiO2 ) like a core-satellite structure have enhanced the room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) intensity along with ultralong lifetime of 1.76 s. Special and quite stable structure should account for these superiorities, including hydrogen network, covalent bond, and trap-stabilized triplet-state excitons that are responsible for the generation of phosphorescence. These multiple effects have efficaciously protected CDs from being restrained by the external environment, providing such long-lived emission (LLE) that can subsist not only in powdery CDs-SiO2 but also coexist in aqueous solution, pushing a big step forward in the application prospects of liquid-state phosphorescence. Through construction of CDs-SiO2 compound, electron trap is reasoned between CDs and SiO2 by analyzing thermoluminescent glow curve. Electron trap can capture, store, and gradually release the electrons just like an electron transporter to improve the intersystem crossing (ISC) and reserved ISC, having provided the more stabilized triplet excitons, stronger and longer phosphorescence, and also triggered the formation of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), offering a new mechanism for exploiting LLE among CD-based field. Moreover, it is more beneficial to the formation of TADF as temperature increases, thus the afterglow color can change with the temperature.

MAIN CONCLUSION: In general, genes promoting IAA, CTK GA and ethylene biosynthesis were upregulated, while genes participating in ABA, chlorophyll and starch biosynthesis pathways performed opposite tendency during etiolation. Etiolation as a method for rejuvenation plays an important role in the vegetative propagation of woody plants. However, the molecular mechanism of etiolated shoot development remains unclear. In this study, we investigated changes at different etiolation stages of Juglans regia. The histology and transcriptome of J. regia were analysed using etiolated stems, which were treated in darkness for 30, 60, 90 days. The results showed that the ratios of pith (Pi) diameter/stem diameter (D), cortex (Co) width/D, and phloem (Ph) width/D increased, while the ratio of xylem (Xy) width/D decreased after etiolation, and the difference in these ratios between etiolated stems and the control was more significant at 60 days than 90 days. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were significantly enriched in pathways such as plant hormone biosynthesis and signal transduction, chlorophyll biosynthesis and degradation, and starch and sucrose metabolism. The difference in the contents of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), abscisic acid (ABA), sugar and chlorophyll between etiolated stems and the control increased with increasing treatment duration; in contrast, the concentrations of gibberellin (GA), zeatin (ZT), and starch, as well as the difference between the etiolated stems and control were lowest at 60 days among the three stages. On the whole, the positive effect of etiolation on the rejuvenation of walnut stems changed as the treatment period increased. The present investigation lays a foundation for future studies on the effect of etiolation on rejuvenation and for promoting the efficiency of vegetative propagation.

Herein, multiple Fano resonances with excellent ability to be tuned independently are produced in a sub-wavelength metal-insulator-metal system. The input and output waveguides are separated by a metal gap, and a stub and an end-coupled cavity are placed below and to the right side of the input waveguide, respectively, as discrete states. Owing to the mode interferences, double ultra-sharp and asymmetric Fano resonant peaks are observed in the transmission spectrum. Successfully, the basic structure is extended by two extra rectangular cavities, giving rise to four Fano resonances with high refractive index sensitivity and figure of merit. Due to the discrete modes of Fano resonances from different coupling cavities, their resonant wavelengths can be controlled independently, which can provide greater flexibility for tuning Fano resonances. The performances of the proposed structure are investigated by both the finite-difference time-domain method and the multimode interference coupled-mode theory. It is believed that the research can provide important guidance in designing Fano resonance structures, and the proposed structure has a wide application in sensors, switches, and nano-photonic integrated circuit devices.

Speckle reduction is a crucial technique, since the presence of speckle disturbs the quality of the reconstruction in digital holography. In this paper, we present a redundant speckle elimination method to suppress the speckle noise. For the same position in each of the reconstructed sub-images, we consider pixels with the same gray value as information with the same speckle distribution. Therefore, a speckle-suppressed gray value can be obtained by extracting pixels with different gray values and then averaging. Through theoretical analysis and experiments, we demonstrate that speckle contrast can be decreased significantly by using the proposed method. Moreover, we show that the despeckle strength of the proposed method highly depends on the number of binary masks. These results indicate the potential of the proposed method for various applications.

RESUMEN

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), with greatly amplified fingerprint spectra, holds great promise in biochemical and biomedical research. In particular, the possibility of exciting a library of SERS probes and differentially detecting them simultaneously has stimulated widespread interest in multiplexed biodetection. Herein, recent progress in developing SERS-active plasmonic nanostructures for cellular and intracellular detection is summarized. The development of nanosensors with tailored plasmonic and multifunctional properties for profiling molecular and pathological processes is highlighted. Future challenges towards the routine use of SERS technology in quantitative bioanalysis and clinical diagnostics are further discussed.

Self-assembly of plasmonic nanocrystals (PNCs) and polymers provides access to a variety of functionalized metallic-polymer building blocks and higher-order hybrid plasmonic assemblies, and thus is of considerable fundamental and practical interest. The hybrid assemblies often not only inherit individual characteristics of polymers and PNCs but also exhibit distinct photophysical and catalytic properties compared to that of a single PNC building block. The tailorable plasmonic coupling between PNCs within assemblies enables the precise control over localized surface plasmon resonance, which subsequently affords a series of light-driven or photo-activated applications, such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering detection, photoacoustic imaging, photothermal therapy, and photodynamic therapy. In this review, the synthetic strategies of a library of PNC-polymer hybrid building blocks and corresponding assemblies are summarized along with the mechanisms of polymer-assisted self-assembly of PNCs and the concepts for bridging the intrinsic properties of PNC-polymer assemblies to widespread practical applications.

Stable solid-state red fluorescence from organosilane-functionalized carbon dots (CDs) with sizes around 3 nm is reported for the first time. Meanwhile, a novel method is also first reported for the efficient construction of dual-fluorescence morphologies. The quantum yield of these solid-state CDs and their aqueous solution is 9.60 and 50.7%, respectively. The fluorescence lifetime is 4.82 ns for solid-state CDs, and 15.57 ns for their aqueous solution. These CDs are detailedly studied how they can exhibit obvious photoluminescence overcoming the self-quenching in solid state. Luminescent materials are constructed with dual fluorescence based on as-prepared single emissive CDs (red emission) and nonfluorescence media (starch, Al2 O3 , and RnOCH3 COONa), with the characteristic peaks located at nearly 440 and 600 nm. Tunable photoluminescence can be successfully achieved by tuning the mass ratio of CDs to solid matrix (such as starch). These constructed dual-fluorescence CDs/starch composites can also be applied in white light-emitting diodes with UV chips (395 nm), and oxygen sensing.

BACKGROUND: Diversion colitis (DC) is a prevalent complication of colostomy characterized by intestinal inflammation. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of somatostatin (SST) in managing DC. METHODS: After establishing a rat DC model, SST was administered via Mini Osmotic Pumps 2001W at a pumping rate of 1.0 µL/h. Various techniques, including hematoxylin and eosin staining, periodic acid-Schiff staining, immunofluorescence staining, and electron microscopy were employed to assess the effects of SST. Intestinal barrier functions were evaluated using Evans blue, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and MacConkey agar. RESULTS: After SST treatment, the significant weight loss and associated high mortality in the DC group were successfully mitigated. Upregulation of claudin-3 and claudin-4 restored mechanical barriers in colon epithelial tissue, whereas protection of goblet cells and stimulation of mucus secretion enhanced mucus barriers. SST effectively reduced leaky gut and alleviated systemic inflammation. CONCLUSION: This study provides initial evidence supporting the efficacy of SST in the treatment of DC. It offers insights into the role of SST in DC by elucidating its ability to restore damaged intestinal barriers.

In the field of digital humanities, color research aims to discover explanations for painting history and color usage habits. However, researchers analyzing color relationships is challenging and time-consuming, as it requires color extraction and a detailed review of many painting images for reference and comparison of color relationships. In our work, we propose ColorNetVis, an interactive color network analysis tool that enables researchers to explore color relationships through color networks. The core of ColorNetVis is a bipartite network model that establishes a bipartite relationship between colors and Chinese painting within a scope based on color difference measurement. It constructs a one-mode color network through projection algorithms and similarity calculation methods to discover the relationship between colors. We propose a coordinated set of views to demonstrate the combination of determined color networks with painting types and real-world attributes. We use color space view, color attribute distribution view, and single color query components to assist researchers in conducting detailed color analysis and validation. Through case studies, researcher reviews, and user studies, we demonstrate that ColorNetVis can effectively help researchers discover knowledge of color relationships and potential color research directions.
