RESUMEN

Electrosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) based on proton exchange membrane (PEM) reactor represents a promising approach to industrial-level H2O2 production, while it is hampered by the lack of high-efficiency electrocatalysts in acidic medium. Herein, we present a strategy for the specific oxygen functional group (OFG) regulation to promote the H2O2 selectivity up to 92% in acid on cobalt-porphyrin molecular assembled with reduced graphene oxide. In-situ X-ray adsorption spectroscopy, in-situ Raman spectroscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy combined with theoretical calculation unravel that different OFGs exert distinctive regulation effects on the electronic structure of Co center through either remote (carboxyl and epoxy) or vicinal (hydroxyl) interaction manners, thus leading to the opposite influences on the promotion in 2e- ORR selectivity. As a consequence, the PEM electrolyzer integrated with the optimized catalyst can continuously and stably produce the high-concentration of ca. 7 wt% pure H2O2 aqueous solution at 400 mA cm-2 over 200 h with a cell voltage as low as ca. 2.1 V, suggesting the application potential in industrial-scale H2O2 electrosynthesis.

RESUMEN

Spinel cobalt oxide displays excellent photocatalytic performance, especially in solar driven water oxidation. However, the process of water reduction to hydrogen is considered as the Achilles' heel of solar water splitting over Co3 O4 owing to its low conduction band. Enhancement of the water splitting efficiency using Co3 O4 requires deeper insights of the carrier dynamics during water splitting process. Herein, the carrier dynamic kinetics of colloidal Co3 O4 quantum dots-Pt hetero-junctions is studied, which mimics the hydrogen reduction process during water splitting. It is showed that the quantum confinement effect induced by the small QD size raised the conduction band edge position of Co3 O4 QDs, so that the ligand-to-metal charge transfer from 2p state of oxygen to 3d state of Co2+ occurs, which is necessary for overall water splitting and cannot be achieved in Co3 O4 bulk crystals. The findings in this work provide insights of the photocatalytic mechanism of Co3 O4 catalysts and benefit rational design of Co3 O4 -based photocatalytic systems.

RESUMEN

Polarization dehazing imaging has been used to restore images degraded by scattering media, particularly in turbid water environments. While learning-based approaches have shown promise in improving the performance of underwater polarimetric dehazing, most current networks rely heavily on data-driven techniques without consideration of physics principles or real physical processes. This work proposes, what we believe to be, a novel Mueller transform matrix network (MTM-Net) for underwater polarimetric image recovery that considers the physical dehazing model adopting the Mueller matrix method, significantly improving the recovery performance. The network is trained with a loss function that combines content and pixel losses to facilitate detail recovery, and is sped up with the inverse residuals and channel attention structure without decreasing image recovery quality. A series of ablation experiment results and comparative tests confirm the performance of this method with a better recovery effect than other methods. These results provide deeper understanding of underwater polarimetric dehazing imaging and further expand the functionality of polarimetric dehazing method.

RESUMEN

Trapping and manipulating mesoscopic biological cells with high precision and flexibility are very important for numerous biomedical applications. In particular, a photonic nanojet based on a non-resonance focusing phenomenon can serve as a powerful tool for manipulating red blood cells and tumor cells in blood. In this study, we demonstrate an approach to trap and drive cells using a high-quality photonic nanojet which is produced by a specific microcone-shaped optical-fiber tip. The dynamic chemical etching method is used to fabricate optical-fiber probes with a microcone-shaped tip. Optical forces and potentials exerted on a red blood cell by a microcone-shaped fiber tips are analyzed based on finite-difference time-domain calculations. Optical trapping and driving experiments are done using breast cancer cells and red blood cells. Furthermore, a cell chain is formed by adjusting the magnitude of the optical force. The real-time backscattering intensities of multiple cells are detected, and highly sensitive trapping is achieved. This microcone-shaped optical fiber probe is potentially a powerful device for dynamic cell assembly, optical sorting, and the precise diagnosis of vascular diseases.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Periampullary diverticulum (PAD) may make the performance of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in patients with choledocholithiasis more difficult and may increase complication rates. The present study evaluated the effects of PAD on first-time ERCP in patients with choledocholithiasis. METHODS: Outcomes were compared in patients with and without PAD and in those with four types of PAD: papilla located completely inside the diverticulum (type I), papilla located in the inner (type II a) and outer (type II b) margins of the diverticulum; and papilla located outside the diverticulum (type III). Parameters compared included cannulation time and rates of difficult cannulation, post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP) and perforation. RESULTS: The median cannulation times in patients with types I, II a, II b, III PAD and in those without PAD were 2.0 min, 5.0 min, 0.67 min, 3.5 min, and 3.5 min, respectively, with difficult cannulation rates in these groups of 7.4%, 31.4%, 8.3%, 18.9%, and 23.2%, respectively. The rates of PEP in patients with and without PAD were 5.3% and 5.1%, respectively. Four patients with and one without PAD experienced perforation. CONCLUSIONS: The division of PAD into four types may be more appropriate than the traditional division into three types. Cannulation of type I and II b PAD was easier than cannulation of patients without PAD, whereas cannulation of type II a PAD was more challenging. PAD may not increase the rates of PEP.

RESUMEN

The bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) photoanode receives extensive attention in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. However, the high charge recombination rate, low electronic conductivity, and sluggish electrode kinetics have inhibited the PEC performance. Increasing the reaction temperature for water oxidation is an effective way to enhance the carrier kinetics of BiVO4. Herein, a polypyrrole (PPy) layer was coated on the BiVO4 film. The PPy layer could harvest the near-infrared light to elevate the temperature of the BiVO4 photoelectrode and further improve charge separation and injection efficiencies. In addition, the conductive polymer PPy layer acted as an effective charge transfer channel to facilitate photogenerated holes moving from BiVO4 to the electrode/electrolyte interface. Therefore, PPy modification led to a significantly improved water oxidation property. After loading the cobalt-phosphate co-catalyst, the photocurrent density reached 3.64 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs the reversible hydrogen electrode, corresponding to an incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency of 63% at 430 nm. This work provided an effective strategy for designing a photothermal material assisted photoelectrode for efficient water splitting.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to develop and validate a deep learning (DL) model to identify atelectasis and attic retraction pocket in cases of otitis media with effusion (OME) using multi-center otoscopic images. METHOD: A total of 6393 OME otoscopic images from three centers were used to develop and validate a DL model for detecting atelectasis and attic retraction pocket. A threefold random cross-validation procedure was adopted to divide the dataset into training validation sets on a patient level. A team of otologists was assigned to diagnose and characterize atelectasis and attic retraction pocket in otoscopic images. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, including area under the ROC curve (AUC), accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were used to assess the performance of the DL model. Class Activation Mapping (CAM) illustrated the discriminative regions in the otoscopic images. RESULTS: Among all OME otoscopic images, 3564 (55.74%) were identified with attic retraction pocket, and 2460 (38.48%) with atelectasis. The diagnostic DL model of attic retraction pocket and atelectasis achieved a threefold cross-validation accuracy of 89% and 79%, AUC of 0.89 and 0.87, a sensitivity of 0.93 and 0.71, and a specificity of 0.62 and 0.84, respectively. Larger and deeper cases of atelectasis and attic retraction pocket showed greater weight, based on the red color depicted in the heat map of CAM. CONCLUSION: The DL algorithm could be employed to identify atelectasis and attic retraction pocket in otoscopic images of OME, and as a tool to assist in the accurate diagnosis of OME.

RESUMEN

Tumor immune microenvironment constituents, such as CD8+ T cells, have emerged as crucial focal points for cancer immunotherapy. Given the absence of reliable biomarkers for clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), we aimed to ascertain a molecular signature that could potentially be linked to CD8+ T cells. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) linked to CD8+ T cells were identified through an analysis of single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Subsequently, immune-associated genes were obtained from the InnateDB and ImmPort datasets and were cross-referenced with CD8+ T-cell-associated DEGs to generate a series of DEGs linked to immune response and CD8+ T cells. Patients with ccRCC from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) were randomly allocated into testing and training groups. A gene signature was established by conducting LASSO-Cox analysis and subsequently confirmed using both the testing and complete groups. The efficacy of this signature in evaluating immunotherapy response was assessed on the IMvigor210 cohort. Finally, we employed various techniques, including CIBERSORT, ESTIMATE, ssGSEA, and qRT-PCR, to examine the immunological characteristics, drug responses, and expression of the signature genes in ccRCC. Our findings revealed 206 DEGs linked to immune response and CD8+ T cells, among which 65 genes were correlated with overall survival (OS) in ccRCC. A risk assessment was created utilizing a set of seven genes: RARRES2, SOCS3, TNFSF14, XCL1, GRN, CLDN4, and RBP7. The group with a lower risk showed increased expression of CD274 (PD-L1), suggesting a more favorable response to anti-PD-L1 treatment. The seven-gene signature demonstrated accurate prognostic prediction for ccRCC and holds potential as a clinical reference for treatment decisions.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the roles of peptidoglycan-associated lipoprotein (Pal protein) in the proliferation of Brucella in macrophage and bacterial virulence, and to evaluate the immune effect of Pal protein to Salmonella enteritidis. Murine macrophage-like cell line Raw264.7 was stimulated by recombinant Pal protein, and the expression of TNF-α and IFN-γ were up-regulated, but not it of IL-1ß and IL-6. The macrophages infection and in vitro simulated stress assays showed that deletion of pal gene reduced the proliferation of Brucella in macrophages, the survival in acidic, oxidative and polymyxin B-contained environment. The mice infection assay showed that mice challenged with the pal mutant strain were found to have more severe splenomegaly, but less bacterial load. After oral immunization of mice, Pal protein induced a higher titer of mucosal and humoral antibody (IgA and IgG) against heat-killed Salmonella enteritidis, and a stronger Th1 cellular immune response. The challengte experiments showed Pal protein elevated the survival rate and reduced the bacterial load of spleens in immunized mice. In conclusion, our results revealed the important roles of pal gene in Brucella virulence, and Pal protein was a potentially valuable adjuvant against mucosal pathogens, such as Salmonella enteritidis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: It is rare to find pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia (PEH) on the auricle. PEH should be differentiated from squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Diagnosis is made after surgery as a biopsy is often inconclusive. A free or pedicled skin flap is needed to avoid deformation of the auricle. METHODS: Adjacent pedicled skin flap is a good option for reconstruction. Moreover, it was shown how to repair the wound in the following two cases. RESULTS: The flaps grew well after surgery, and the wound healed well. CONCLUSION: PEH is a benign lesion. Adjacent pedicled skin flap is a good option for reconstruction, which can avoid deformation of the auricle.

RESUMEN

Single-atom nickel catalysts hold great promise for photocatalytic water splitting due to their plentiful active sites and cost-effectiveness. Herein, we adopt a reactive-group guided strategy to prepare atomically dispersed nickel catalysts on red phosphorus. The hydrothermal treatment of red phosphorus leads to the formation of P-H and P-OH groups, which behave as the reactive functionalities to generate the dual structure of single-atom P-Ni and P-O-Ni catalytic sites. The produced single-atom sites provide two different functions: P-Ni for water reduction and P-O-Ni for water oxidation. Benefitting from this specific Janus structure, Ni-red phosphorus shows an elevated hydrogen evolution rate compared to Ni nanoparticle-modified red phosphorus under visible-light irradiation. The hydrogen evolution rate was additionally enhanced with increased reaction temperature, reaching 91.51 µmol h-1 at 70 °C, corresponding to an apparent quantum efficiency of 8.9 % at 420 nm excitation wavelength.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) remodeling and adipocytokines are associated with structural remodeling in atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the role of omentin-1, a novel adipocytokine, in structural remodeling remains unknown. METHODS: Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Masson's trichrome stains were used to investigate the histology of EAT and right atrial appendages. The expression levels of adipocytokines in these human samples were determined by immunohistochemical assay and western blotting. Models of transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß1-induced activation of cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) and TGF-ß1-induced endothelial-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) of human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) were established to explore roles of omentin-1 in these processes. To determine changes in adipocytokines secretion under hypoxia conditions, adipocytes were treated with 5% O2 and 95% N2, and then CFs and HUVECs were co-cultured with the conditioned medium of adipocytes to determine the effects of hypoxia-treated adipocytes on these cells. RESULTS: Expression of omentin-1 was downregulated in the EAT and right atrial appendages from patients with AF compared to samples from patients without AF, while the TGF-ß1 level was upregulated in EAT from patients with AF. EAT from patients with AF exhibited adipocyte hypertrophy and severe interstitial fibrosis. Omentin-1 inhibited TGF-ß1-induced CF activation and reversed TGF-ß1-induced HUVEC EndMT. Adipocytes treated with hypoxia exhibited downregulation of omentin-1 and partly activated CFs. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that omentin-1 was an antifibrotic adipocytokine and was downregulated in patients with AF, which was partly mediated by hypoxia.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: As an important means of communication, exosomes play an important role in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: Bioinformatics analysis, dual-luciferase reporter assays, methylation-specific quantitative PCR, and ChIP-PCR analysis were used to gain insight into the underlying mechanism of miR-21 in HCC. RESULTS: The detection of miRNAs in exosomes of HCC showed that miR-21 expression in exosomes was positively correlated with the expression level of miR-21 in cells and negatively correlated with the expression of its target genes PTEN, PTENp1 and TETs. HCC cell-derived exosomes could increase miR-21 and p-Akt expression in HCC cells and downregulate the expression of PTEN, PTENp1 and TETs. MiR-21 inhibitors or PTENp1 overexpression vectors could weaken the effect of the abovementioned exosomes and simultaneously weaken their role in promoting cell proliferation and migration and inhibiting apoptosis. Further studies showed that miR-21 not only directly regulated the expression of PTEN, PTENp1 and TETs but also increased the methylation level of the PTENp1 promoter by regulating the expression of TETs, thereby inhibiting the expression of PTENp1 and further downregulating the expression of PTEN. CONCLUSIONS: Exosomal miR-21 can regulate the expression of the tumor suppressor genes PTEN and PTENp1 in various ways and affect the growth of HCC cells.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: It is well known that the genotype of ALDH2 is associated with coronary artery disease (CAD), and in-stent restenosis (ISR) is a primary complication of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), a primary recommended treatment for CAD. The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) genotype and in-stent restenosis (ISR). METHODS: This study recruited 531 patients who were undergoing PCI at two Chinese hospitals from 2015 to 2017 and 183 were diagnosed with ISR after PCI during the one-year follow-up period. We used polymerase chain restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and sequencing to determine ALDH2 polymorphisms. RESULTS: Among all 531 patients (mean age = 59.4 ± 9.8; 65.9% male), 68.7% carried the wild-type genotype, 28.4% were heterozygous for the mutation, and 2.8% were homozygous for the mutation. Multiple logistical regression analyses indicated no correlation between ALDH2 genotype and the occurrence of restenosis after PCI (OR = 1.448, 95% CI: 0.965-2.168, p = 0.073), though a significant association was observed for patients with diabetes (OR = 4.053, 95% CI: 1.668-10.449, p = 0.003). CONCLUSION: In this study, we found that carrying an ALDH2*2 allele had no notable relationship with ISR one year after PCI but that it did have a significant association with complications in diabetic patients. Further studies with larger sample sizes will be necessary to reveal a consensus.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To investigate the long-term clinical effect of balloon dilation eustachian tuboplasty (BET) combined with tympanic tube insertion (TTI) in the treatment of chronic recurrent secretory otitis media (CRSOM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of 30 cases of CRSOM treated with BET combined with TTI under general anesthesia between August 2014 and September 2016. Thirty cases of CRSOM treated with TTI in the same period were taken as the control group. All cases were followed over 24 months. The scores of eustachian tube (ET) function preoperation, 1 month, 6 months, 12 months, and 24 months postoperation were collected and analyzed, respectively. A satisfaction questionnaire was used to evaluate the therapy at 24-months postoperation. RESULTS: The symptoms were significantly improved and the ET score was obviously increased postsurgery in most cases treated with BET plus TTI compared with those treated with TTI alone. The highest ET score was obtained at 6 months post BET. Five (14%) cases (6 ears) of CRSOM recurred. The 24-month postoperation follow-up questionnaire showed that 84.6% of the patients were satisfied with the treatment, while ten cases (25%) in the TTI group recurred. CONCLUSION: BET combined with TTI surgery is an effective therapy for patients with CRSOM.

RESUMEN

Sexual and asexual reproduction are two key processes in the pathogenic cycle of many filamentous pathogens. However in Peronophythora litchii, the causal pathogen for the litchi downy blight disease, critical regulator(s) of sexual or asexual differentiation has not been elucidated. In this study, we cloned a gene named PlM90 from P. litchii, which encodes a putative Puf RNA-binding protein. We found that PlM90 was highly expressed during asexual development, and much higher than that during sexual development, while relatively lower during cyst germination and plant infection. By polyethylene glycol (PEG)-mediated protoplast transformation, we generated three PlM90-silenced transformants and found a severely impaired ability in sexual spore production and a delay in stages of zoospore release and encystment. However, the pathogenicity of P. litchii was not affected by PlM90-silencing. Therefore we conclude that PlM90 specifically regulates the sexual and asexual differentiation of P. litchii.

RESUMEN

We report on what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first ultra-efficient 1.5 µm Raman amplifier in a methane-filled anti-resonance hollow-core fiber. A 1.5 µm single frequency seed laser is coupled into the hollow-core fiber together with a 1064 nm pulsed pump laser using a shortpass dichromic mirror, and then amplified by stimulated Raman scattering of methane. A maximum optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 66.4% has been obtained, resulting in a record near quantum-limit efficiency of 96.3% in a 2 m long hollow-core fiber filled with only 2 bar methane gas. This kind of gas filled hollow-core Raman amplifier provides a potential method to obtain high efficiency mid-infrared laser sources with low threshold and narrow linewidth in various applications.
