RESUMEN

Though micro-light-emitting diode (micro-LED) displays are regarded as the next-generation emerging display technology, challenges such as defects in LED's light output power and radiation patterns are critical to the commercialization success. Here we propose an electroluminescence mass detection method to examine the light output quality from the on-wafer LED arrays before they are transferred to the display substrate. The mass detection method consists of two stages. In the first stage, the luminescent image is captured by a camera by mounting an ITO (indium-tin oxide) transparent conducting glass on the LED wafer. Due to the resistance of the ITO contact pads and on-wafer n-type electrodes, we develop a calibration method based on the circuit model to predict the current flow on each LED. The light output power of each device is thus calibrated back by multi-variable regression analysis. The analysis results in an average variation as low as 6.89% for devices predicted from luminescent image capturing and actual optical power measurement. We also examine the defective or non-uniform micro-LED radiation profiles by constructing a 2-D convolutional neural network (CNN) model. The optimized model is determined among three different approaches. The CNN model can recognize 99.45% functioning LEDs, and show a precision of 96.29% for correctly predicting good devices.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) continues to increase in modern aging society. Patients with AF are at high risk for multiple adverse cardiovascular events, including heart failure, stroke, and mortality. Improved medical care is needed for patients with AF to enhance their quality of life and limit their medical resource utilization. With advances in the internet and technology, telehealth programs are now widely used in medical care. A fourth-generation telehealth program offers synchronous and continuous medical attention in response to physiological parameters measured at home. Although we have previously shown the benefits of this telehealth program for some patients with a high risk of cardiovascular disease, its benefits for patients with AF remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the benefits of participating in a fourth-generation telehealth program for patients with AF in relation to cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study. We retrospectively searched the medical records database of a tertiary medical center in Northern Taiwan between January 2007 and December 2017. We screened 5062 patients with cardiovascular disease and enrolled 537 patients with AF, of which 279 participated in the telehealth program and 258 did not. Bias was reduced using the inverse probability of treatment weighting adjustment based on the propensity score. Outcomes were collected and analyzed, including all-cause readmission, admission for heart failure, acute coronary syndrome, ischemic stroke, systemic embolism, bleeding events, all-cause mortality, and cardiovascular death within the follow-up period. Total medical expenses and medical costs in different departments were also compared. Subgroup analyses were conducted on ischemic stroke stratified by several subgroup variables. RESULTS: The mean follow-up period was 3.0 (SD 1.7) years for the telehealth group and 3.4 (SD 1.9) years for the control group. After inverse probability of treatment weighting adjustment, the patients in the telehealth program had significantly fewer ischemic strokes (2.0 vs 4.5 events per 100 person-years; subdistribution hazard ratio [SHR] 0.45, 95% CI 0.22-0.92) and cardiovascular deaths (2.5 vs 5.9 events per 100 person-years; SHR 0.43, 95% CI 0.18-0.99) at the follow-up. The telehealth program particularly benefited patients comorbid with vascular disease (SHR 0.11, 95% CI 0.02-0.53 vs SHR 1.16, 95% CI 0.44-3.09; P=.01 for interaction). The total medical expenses during follow-up were similar in the telehealth and control groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated the benefits of participating in the fourth-generation telehealth program for patients with AF by significantly reducing their ischemic stroke risk while spending the same amount on medical expenses.

RESUMEN

Two pairs of new enantiomeric hydroxyphenylacetic acid derivatives, (±)-corylophenols A and B ((±)-1 and (±)-2), a new α-pyrone analogue, corylopyrone A (3), and six andrastin-type meroterpenoids (4-9) were isolated and identified from the deep-sea cold-seep sediment-derived fungus Penicillium corylophilum CS-682. Their structures and stereo configurations were determined by detailed spectroscopic analysis of NMR and MS data, chiral HPLC analysis, J-based configuration analysis, and quantum chemical calculations of ECD, specific rotation, and NMR (with DP4+ probability analysis). Compound 3 showed inhibitory activity against some strains of pathogenic bacteria.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: In patients with noncardioembolic acute minor ischemic stroke (AMIS), dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with aspirin plus clopidogrel within 24 h after stroke onset was more effective than aspirin alone. This study investigated the efficacy and safety of DAPT in AMIS patients with an onset-to-door time (OTDT) of more than 24 h. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of a prospective stroke registry from 2015 to 2021. Patients with AMIS and an OTDT within seven days were classified into the Early (≤24 h) and Late groups (>24 h) according to the time of antiplatelet administration after stroke onset. RESULTS: In total, 691 patients were identified. Of these, 446 (64.5%) and 245 (35.5%) patients were classified into the Early and Late groups, respectively. The rates of recurrent infarction and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage at 90 days were similar between the single antiplatelet therapy (SAPT) and DAPT subgroups in both the Early and Late groups. More patients in the DAPT subgroup had a favorable outcome (modified Rankin scale of 0-1) at 90 days in both Early (84.2% versus 75.0%, p = 0.016) and Late (88.2% versus 76.9%, p = 0.040) groups. DAPT was independently associated with a favorable outcome in both the Early (odds ratio, 1.95; 95% CI, 1.15-3.32; p = 0.013) and Late (odds ratio, 2.72; 95% CI, 1.14-6.48; p = 0.024) groups. CONCLUSION: In patients with AMIS and an OTDT of more than 24 h, DAPT was associated with a favorable outcome at 90 days.

RESUMEN

The aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR) is the standard screening test for primary aldosteronism (PA). Because of the poor reproducibility of the ARR, repeat testing is recommended if the result is not compatible with the clinical condition. Various methods to measure renin are used in different hospitals in Taiwan, and the ARR cutoff values also differ among laboratories. The Task Force of Taiwan PA recommend using plasma renin activity (PRA) to calculate ARR instead of direct renin concentration (DRC) unless PRA is unavailable, because PRA is widely used in international guidelines and most studies.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Report of a Phase 1 dose-escalation study of OBI-3424 monotherapy in patients with advanced solid tumors (NCT03592264). METHODS: A classic 3 + 3 design was used to determine the maximum tolerated dose and recommended Phase 2 dose (RP2D) of OBI-3424 administered intravenously, as a single agent, at doses of 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, or 12 mg/m2 (days 1 and 8 of a 21-day cycle, Schedule A) or 8, 10, 12, or 14 mg/m2 (day 1 of a 21-day cycle, Schedule B). RESULTS: Dose-limiting hematologic toxicities at 12 mg/m2 in Schedule A led to dose and schedule modifications (Schedule B). In Schedule B, maximum tolerated dose was not reached at the maximum dose tested (14 mg/m2). Grade ≥3 anemia was noted in 3/6 patients treated at 14 mg/m2; the RP2D was 12 mg/m2 (Schedule B). Grade ≥3 treatment-emergent adverse events were experienced by 19/39 (49%) and included anemia (41%) and thrombocytopenia (26%); three patients experienced serious treatment-emergent adverse events (grade ≥3 anemia and thrombocytopenia). One patient had a partial response and 21/33 (64%) had stable disease. CONCLUSIONS: The RP2D is 12 mg/m2 once every 3 weeks. OBI-3424 was well tolerated; dose-dependent, noncumulative thrombocytopenia and anemia were dose-limiting.

RESUMEN

The Omicron variant of concern (VOC) has surged in many countries and replaced the previously reported VOC. To identify different Omicron strains/sublineages on a rapid, convenient, and precise platform, we report a novel multiplex real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method in one tube based on the Omicron lineage sequence variants' information. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) subvariants were used in a PCR-based assay for rapid identification of Omicron sublineage genotyping in 1000 clinical samples. Several characteristic mutations were analyzed using specific primers and probes for the spike gene, del69-70, and F486V. To distinguish Omicron sublineages (BA.2, BA.4, and BA.5), the NSP1:141-143del in the ORF1a region and D3N mutation in membrane protein occurring outside the spike protein region were analyzed. Results from the real-time PCR assay for one-tube accuracy were compared to those of whole genome sequencing. The developed PCR assay was used to analyze 400 SARS-CoV-2 positive samples. Ten samples determined as BA.4 were positive for NSP1:141-143del, del69-70, and F486V mutations; 160 BA.5 samples were positive for D3N, del69-70, and F486V mutations, and 230 BA.2 samples were without del69-70. Screening these samples allowed the identification of epidemic trends at different time intervals. Our novel one-tube multiplex PCR assay was effective in identifying Omicron sublineages.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors are selective and effective treatments for cancers with relevant mutations. Purpuric drug eruptions are an uncommon but clinically significant dermatological side effect related to EGFR inhibitor use that are associated with positive bacterial cultures and responsive to antibiotic treatment. However, the longitudinal temporal shifts in the skin microbiome that occur before and after antibiotic treatment of purpuric drug eruptions remain largely unknown. OBJECTIVES: To characterize temporal changes in the skin and mucosal microbiomes before and after antibiotic treatment of EGFR inhibitor-related purpuric drug eruptions. METHODS: Twelve patients who experienced EGFR inhibitor-related purpuric drug eruptions were recruited from a dermato-oncology clinic in Taiwan from May 2017 to April 2018. Swabs were obtained from skin lesions and the nasal mucosa before and after antibiotic treatment of purpuric drug eruptions. After the amplification and sequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA genes, the diversity and compositions of microbiomes sampled at different time points were compared. RESULTS: The alpha diversity (represented by the Shannon index) of the skin microbiome increased significantly in the recovered phase of purpuric drug eruptions compared with that of the active phase. By contrast, the nasal microbiome showed no significant change in alpha diversity. The relative abundance of Staphylococcus significantly decreased in samples from skin of the recovered phase, which was confirmed by analysis of compositions of microbiomes (ANCOM) and the ALDEx2 analysis packages in R. CONCLUSIONS: The cutaneous microbiome of purpuric drug eruptions showed a significant increase in alpha diversity and a decrease in the relative abundance of Staphylococcus following antibiotic treatment. These findings may help guide antimicrobial therapy of this EGFR inhibitor-related condition.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Mitral regurgitation (MR) and tricuspid regurgitation (TR) are common cardiac conditions with high mortality risks, which can be improved through early intervention. Telehealth services, which allow for remote monitoring of patient conditions, have been proven to improve the health management of chronic diseases, but the effects on MR and TR progression are unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore whether patients receiving telehealth services have less MR and TR progression compared with a control group. We also aimed to identify the determinants of MR and TR progression. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study conducted at the National Taiwan University Hospital compared MR and TR progression (defined as either progression to moderate or greater MR and TR or MR and TR progression by ≥2 grades during the study period) between the telehealth and control groups. Patients had a minimum of 2 transthoracic echocardiograms at least 6 months apart; baseline mild-moderate MR and TR or lower; and no prior surgeries on the mitral or tricuspid valve. Telehealth patients were defined as those who received telehealth services for at least 28 days within 3 months of baseline. Basic demographics, baseline blood pressure measurements, prescribed medication, and Charlson Comorbidity Index components were obtained for all patients. RESULTS: A total of 1081 patients (n=226 in the telehealth group and n=855 in the control group) were included in the study analyses. The telehealth group showed significantly lower baseline systolic blood pressure (P<.001), higher Charlson Comorbidity Index (P=.02), higher prevalence of prior myocardial infarction (P=.01) and heart failure (P<.001), higher beta-blocker (P=.03) and diuretic (P=.04) use, and lower nitrate use (P=.04). Both groups showed similar cardiac remodeling conditions at baseline. Telehealth was found to be neutral for both MR (hazard ratio 1.10, 95% CI 0.80-1.52; P=.52) and TR (hazard ratio 1.27, 95% CI 0.92-1.74; P=.14) progression. Determinants for moderate or greater MR progression included older age, female sex, diuretic use, larger left atrial dimension, left ventricular end-diastolic dimension, left ventricular end-systolic dimension, and lower left ventricular ejection fraction. Determinants of moderate or greater TR progression included older age, female sex, diuretic use, presence of atrial fibrillation, LA dimension, left ventricular end-systolic dimension, and lower left ventricular ejection fraction; statin use was found to be protective. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to assess the association between telehealth services and the progression of MR and TR. Telehealth patients, who had more comorbidities, displayed similar MR and TR progression versus control patients, indicating that telehealth may slow MR and TR progression. Determinants of MR and TR progression included easy-to-measure traditional echo parameters of cardiac function, older age, female sex, and atrial fibrillation, which can be incorporated into a telehealth platform and advanced alert system, improving patient outcomes through personalized care.

RESUMEN

Background: The optimal strategy of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute myocardial infarction (MI) complicated with cardiogenic shock (CS) remains controversial. We aimed to elucidate the renal and cardiovascular impact of culprit-only (C) revascularization versus additional interventions on non-infarct-related arteries. Methods: PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library were searched for relevant literature. A total of 96,812 subjects [C-PCI: 69,986; multi-vessel (MV)-PCI: 26,826] in nine studies (one randomized control trial; eight observational cohort studies) were enrolled. Results: MV-PCI was associated with a higher kidney event rate [relative risk (RR): 1.29, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.12-1.49; p < 0.001]. However, the all-cause mortality rate was comparable both during admission (RR: 1.07, 95% CI: 0.94-1.22; p = 0.30) and at one year (RR: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.79-1.16; p = 0.65). MV-PCI was associated with a greater risk of stroke (RR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.08-1.32; p < 0.001) and bleeding events (RR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.07-1.51; p = 0.006), but reduced risk of recurrent MI (RR: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.82-0.97; p = 0.009) and repeat revascularization (RR: 0.34, 95% CI: 0.16-0.71; p = 0.004). No increased risk of coronary artery bypass grafting was present (RR: 1.09, 95% CI: 0.38-3.17; p = 0.87). Conclusions: C-PCI was associated with a lower rate of renal dysfunction but not all-cause mortality in patients with CS complicating acute MI.

RESUMEN

In this study, we firstly propose an optical approach to investigate the ion profile of organic films in light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) without any invasive sputtering processes. In contrast to previous literatures, this pure optical strategy allows us to record clear and non-destructive ion profile images in the (Ru(dtb-bpy)3(PF6)2) consisted organic layer without interferences of complex collisions from the bombardment of secondary sputter induced ions in a conventional time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. By using the advanced position sensitive detector (PSD)-based Nanoscale Confocal Microscope, ion distribution profiles were successfully acquired based on the observation of nanoscale optical path length difference by measuring the refractive-index variation while the thickness of the LEC layer was fixed. Dynamic time-dependent ion profile displayed clear ion migration process under a 100 V applied bias at two ends of the LEC. This technique opens up a new avenue towards the future investigations of ion distributions inside organic/inorganic materials, Li-ion batteries, or micro-fluid channels without damaging the materials or disturbing the device operation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is associated with a large global disease burden with variable control rates across different regions and races. Telehealth has recently emerged as a health care strategy for managing chronic diseases, but there are few reports regarding the effects of synchronous telehealth services on home blood pressure (BP) control and variability. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of synchronous telehealth services with a digital platform on home BP. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted by the Taiwan ELEctroHEALTH study group at the Telehealth Center of the National Taiwan University Hospital. We analyzed home BP data taken from 2888 patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) enrolled in our telehealth program between 2009 to 2017. Of the 2888 patients with CVD, 348 (12.05%) patients who received home BP surveillance for ≥56 days were selected for BP analysis. Patients were stratified into three groups: (1) poorly controlled hypertension, (2) well-controlled hypertension, and (3) nonhypertension. The mean, SD, coefficient of variation (CV), and average real variability were calculated. RESULTS: Telehealth interventions significantly and steadily reduced systolic blood pressure (SBP) in the poorly controlled hypertension group from 144.8.2±9.2 to 133.7±10.2 mmHg after 2 months (P<.001). BP variability reduced in all patients: SBP-SD decreased from 7.8±3.4 to 7.3±3.4 after 2 months (P=.004), and SBP-CV decreased from 6.3±2.5 to 5.9±2.6 after 2 months (P=.004). Event-free survival (admission) analysis stratified by SBP-SD showed longer time to first hospitalization for Q1 patients compared with Q4 patients (P=.02, odds ratio 2.15, 95% CI 1.18-3.89). CONCLUSIONS: Synchronous telehealth intervention may improve home BP control and decrease day-by-day home BP variability in patients with CVD.

RESUMEN

The majority of digital sensors rely on von Neumann architecture microprocessors to process sampled data. When the sampled data require complex computation for 24×7, the processing element will a consume significant amount of energy and computation resources. Several new sensing algorithms use deep neural network algorithms and consume even more computation resources. High resource consumption prevents such systems for 24×7 deployment although they can deliver impressive results. This work adopts a Computing-In-Memory (CIM) device, which integrates a storage and analog processing unit to eliminate data movement, to process sampled data. This work designs and evaluates the CIM-based sensing framework for human pose recognition. The framework consists of uncertainty-aware training, activation function design, and CIM error model collection. The evaluation results show that the framework can improve the detection accuracy of three poses classification on CIM devices using binary weights from 33.3% to 91.5% while that on ideal CIM is 92.1%. Although on digital systems the accuracy is 98.7% with binary weight and 99.5% with floating weight, the energy consumption of executing 1 convolution layer on a CIM device is only 30,000 to 50,000 times less than the digital sensing system. Such a design can significantly reduce power consumption and enables battery-powered always-on sensors.

RESUMEN

Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a maternally transmitted disease caused by mitochondria DNA (mtDNA) mutation. It is characterized by acute and subacute visual loss predominantly affecting young men. The mtDNA mutation is transmitted to all maternal lineages. However, only approximately 50% of men and 10% of women harboring a pathogenic mtDNA mutation develop optic neuropathy, reflecting both the incomplete penetrance and its unexplained male prevalence, where over 80% of patients are male. Nuclear modifier genes have been presumed to affect the penetrance of LHON. With conventional genetic methods, prior studies have failed to solve the underlying pathogenesis. Whole exome sequencing (WES) is a new molecular technique for sequencing the protein-coding region of all genes in a whole genome. We performed WES from five families with 17 members. These samples were divided into the proband group (probands with acute onset of LHON, n = 7) and control group (carriers including mother and relative carriers with mtDNSA 11778 mutation, without clinical manifestation of LHON, n = 10). Through whole exome analysis, we found that many mitochondria related (MT-related) nuclear genes have high percentage of variants in either the proband group or control group. The MT genes with a difference over 0.3 of mutation percentage between the proband and control groups include AK4, NSUN4, RDH13, COQ3, and FAHD1. In addition, the pathway analysis revealed that these genes were associated with cofactor metabolism pathways. Family-based analysis showed that several candidate MT genes including METAP1D (c.41G > T), ACACB (c.1029del), ME3 (c.972G > C), NIPSNAP3B (c.280G > C, c.476C > G), and NSUN4 (c.4A > G) were involved in the penetrance of LHON. A GWAS (genome wide association study) was performed, which found that ADGRG5 (Chr16:575620A:G), POLE4 (Chr2:7495872T:G), ERMAP (Chr1:4283044A:G), PIGR (Chr1:2069357C:T;2069358G:A), CDC42BPB (Chr14:102949A:G), PROK1 (Chr1:1104562A:G), BCAN (Chr 1:1566582C:T), and NES (Chr1:1566698A:G,1566705T:C, 1566707T:C) may be involved. The incomplete penetrance and male prevalence are still the major unexplained issues in LHON. Through whole exome analysis, we found several MT genes with a high percentage of variants were involved in a family-based analysis. Pathway analysis suggested a difference in the mutation burden of MT genes underlining the biosynthesis and metabolism pathways. In addition, the GWAS analysis also revealed several candidate nuclear modifier genes. The new technology of WES contributes to provide a highly efficient candidate gene screening function in molecular genetics.

RESUMEN

Peri-implantitis is defined as a bacterial infection-induced inflammation and suppuration of soft and hard tissues surrounding a dental implant. If bacteria further invade the alveolar bone, they can easily cause bone loss and even lead to the early failure of a dental implant surgery. In the present study, an 80SiO2-15CaO-5P2O5 mesoporous bioactive glass film system containing 1, 5, and 10 mol% of silver was prepared on titanium implant discs (MBG-Ag-coated Ti) using sol-gel and spin coating methods. The wettability and adhesion strength of the films were evaluated using contact angle measurements and adhesion strength tests, respectively. The phase composition, chemical bonding, morphology, and oxidation states of the films were analyzed via X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In vitro bioactivity analysis of the films was performed by immersion in a simulated body fluid (SBF) for 24 h. Disk diffusion tests were performed on the early colonizing bacteria Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Streptococcus mutans to evaluate the antibacterial ability of the films. A silver-containing mesoporous bioactive glass film with excellent biocompatibility and antibacterial properties was successfully prepared.

RESUMEN

Background and objectives: Among patients with pathologically proven T2N0 oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), a notable amount of patients still die from tumor recurrence although they have radical surgery for early stage cancers. In literature, the prognostic indicators of this specific disease entity were rarely reported. This study aims at analyzing the prognostic factors of T2N0 OSCC patients and discussing possible managements to improve the survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2012 to December 2017, the data of 166 pathologically proven T2N0 oral cancer patients proved by radical surgery were retrospectively collected. The clinical and pathologic factors including age, gender, tumor differentiation grade, perineural invasion (PNI), angiolymphatic invasion (ALI), margin status, and adjuvant therapy were analyzed by univariate and multivariate analysis to determine their association with disease-specific survival (DSS), and disease-free survival (DFS), which were calculated by Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS: After median follow up time of 43.5 months, overall 3-year rates of DSS and DFS were 86.1% and 80.1% respectively for our 166 patients. Univariate analysis showed that the 3-year DSS of 90.8% for PNI negative patients was significantly better than DSS of 57.0% for PNI positive patients (p = 0.0006). The 3-year DFS of 84.2% for PNI negative patients was also significantly better than DFS of 54.6% for PNI positive patients (p = 0.001). Further multivariate analysis revealed PNI was the only independent prognostic factor associated with both DSS (Hazard Ratio (HR) = 5.02; 95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 1.99-12.6; p = 0.001), and DFS (HR = 3.92; 95% CI = 1.65-9.32; p = 0.002). Nearly 10% (16) of the 166 patients had adverse pathologic feature of PNI only. In the 11 patients without adjuvant therapy, 5 patients died from OSCC. No patients had recurrence or mortality after they received adjuvant therapy with chemotherapy ± radiotherapy. CONCLUSION: PNI was an independent prognostic factor for T2N0 oral cancer patients. Adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy may benefit the survival of this specific disease entity, but further investigations are needed to elucidate the optimal regimen.

RESUMEN

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Several cardiovascular outcome trials on sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) have been released recently, including trials enrolling patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Comparisons of the efficacy and safety of SGLT2i, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i) thus require an update. Assessments in patient subgroups, i.e., as stratified by age or the presence of CHF, CKD or atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), are also currently lacking. METHODS: We searched the PubMed, Embase and Cochrane databases for relevant studies published up until 5 December 2020. RCTs comparing SGLT2i, GLP-1RA and DPP-4i with placebo (or other controls) or with each other with cardiovascular (CV) or renal outcomes were eligible for inclusion. The primary efficacy endpoint was 3-point major adverse cardiovascular events (3P-MACE), which are defined as CV death, non-fatal myocardial infarction and non-fatal ischaemic stroke. All-cause mortality, hospitalisation for heart failure (HHF) and composite renal outcomes were also analysed. Pre-specified subgroup analyses of 3P-MACE were also performed. RESULTS: A total of 21 trials with 170,930 participants were included in this network meta-analysis. Both GLP-1RA and SGLT2i were associated with lower risks of 3P-MACE than placebo (RR 0.89, 95% CI 0.84, 0.94 and RR 0.88, 95% CI 0.83, 0.94, respectively). GLP-1RA and SGLT2i were also associated with lower risks of 3P-MACE than DPP-4i (RR 0.89, 95% CI 0.82, 0.98 and RR 0.89, 95% CI 0.81, 0.97, respectively). A comparison between SGLT2i and GLP-1RA demonstrated no difference in their risks of 3P-MACE (RR 0.99, 95% CI 0.91, 1.08). Only GLP-1RA was associated with a lower risk of stroke compared with placebo (RR 0.85, 95% CI 0.76, 0.94). SGLT2i is superior to GLP-1RA in reducing HHF (RR 0.76, 95% CI 0.68, 0.84) and renal outcomes (RR 0.78, 95% CI 0.65, 0.93). Subgroup analyses indicated that the benefits of SGLT2i and GLP-1RA were more pronounced in elderly patients, white and Asian patients, those with established ASCVD and those with longer durations of diabetes mellitus and worse glycaemic control. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: SGLT2i and GLP-1RA are superior to DPP-4i in terms of CV and renal outcomes. GLP-1RA is the only drug class that reduces the risk of stroke. SGLT2i is superior in reducing HHF and renal outcomes. Therefore, the choice between SGLT2i and GLP-1RA should be individualised according to patient profiles. RESUMEN

We demonstrate a homebuilt confocal microscope with ∼60 nm axial resolution to visualize the optical path length (OPL) of liquid crystals (LCs) inside a 2-domain alignment LC cell. Since the microscope is sensitive to light polarization, it is capable of determining LC orientation by accounting for the OPL variation, ΔOPL. The resolution of birefringence depends on the measured ΔOPL from two cross-polarized channel detections, of which the concept is different from other polarization-resolved optical imaging techniques, but is relatively simple in optical layout and analysis. The different orientations of LCs and the voltage-dependent LC rotation properties in the 2-domain LC cell are monitored and analyzed. Additionally, the complicated LC orientation distribution at the junction of the two domains with different alignments can be clearly observed. It shows great possibilities of examining tissue birefringence related to disease progression and tiny birefringence variation of electro-optical materials under an external field, which are hardly resolved by conventional optical imaging techniques.

RESUMEN

In the mid-wave infrared (MIR) band, large detector arrays are extremely costly and technically difficult to be manufactured. Thus, it is difficult to obtain high-resolution images for a conventional MIR camera. Spatial compressive imaging can improve resolution. However, system errors due to misalignment or optical aberrations degrade reconstruction quality significantly. Another common issue for compressive imaging is the slow imaging speed, which is caused by slow measurement collection and reconstruction processes. To deal with the two issues, we use an imaging calibration method to improve reconstruction quality and a sliding window measurement collection strategy plus a reconstruction algorithm accelerated by parallel computing to fasten the speed. We build a prototype of a compressive imaging camera with an angular resolution 1.17 lp/mrad. A four-bar target is used as an object. We reconstruct a moving scene of size $1280 \times 1024$ with a frame rate 20 frames per second.
