RESUMEN

The spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is causing an unprecedented crisis around the world, with South Korea being no exception. South Korea experienced a surge of COVID-19 cases on February 19, 2020, but was able to flatten the COVID-19 curve in only 20 days without enforcing lockdown measures that restrict the freedom and movement of people. The actual field experience of the Korean government's COVID-19 response team, who participated in drafting the document "Tackling COVID-19: Health, Quarantine, and Economic Measures: Korean experience," was examined and an in-depth analysis was conducted of the South Korean government's experience dealing with the Middle East respiratory syndrome of 2015. Three prominent factors were identified behind Korea's responses against COVID-19. First, it was crucial that the government responded as 1 team efficiently to cooperate and respond to COVID-19. Second, a novel approach was needed to combat COVID-19 spread. Information and communication technology had a key role in South Korea's strategy to contain COVID-19. Third, an effective response to COVID-19 was possible due to the successful partnership between the general public and state authorities.

There are three subtypes of vertebrate inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) receptor (IP3R), a Ca2+-release channel on the ER membrane - IP3R1, IP3R2, and IP3R3 - each of which has a distinctive role in disease development. To determine the subtype-specific IP3-binding mechanism, we compared the thermodynamics, thermal stability, and conformational dynamics between the N-terminal regions of IP3R1 (IP3R1-NT) and IP3R3 (IP3R3-NT) by performing circular dichroism (CD), isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS). Previously determined crystal structures of IP3R1-NT and HDX-MS results from this study revealed that both IP3R1 and IP3R3 adopt a similar IP3-binding mechanism. However, several regions, including the α- and ß-interfaces, of IP3R1-NT and IP3R3-NT show significantly different conformational dynamics upon IP3 binding, which may explain the different IP3-binding affinities between the subtypes. The importance of the interfaces for subtype-specific IP3 binding is also supported by the different dynamic conformations of the two subtypes in the apo-states. Furthermore, IP3R1-NT and IP3R3-NT show different IP3-binding affinities and thermal stabilities, but share similar thermodynamic properties for IP3 binding. These results collectively provide new insights into the mechanism underlying IP3 binding to IP3Rs and the subtype-specific regulatory mechanism.

Plastic-based insulation materials have been widely employed owing to their exceptional durability, cost-effectiveness, low weight, and low thermal conductivity. Nevertheless, the disposal of the insulation material waste (IMW) within construction waste and its recycling and recovery are challenging. Meanwhile, landfilling or incineration methods can release toxic chemicals into the environment. Consequently, the accumulation of IMW in construction waste has become a pressing environmental concern. To address this issue, this paper proposes a pyrolysis platform as a disposal management method for IMW that employs CO2 as a reactive medium. IMW composed of polystyrene in the form of extruded polystyrene underwent pyrolysis to yield pyrogenic products containing toxic chemicals. These toxic chemicals were subsequently transformed into syngas via homogeneous reactions with CO2 under certain thermal conditions and Ni/Al2O3 catalyst. This resulted in a significant reduction in the total peak areas of toxic substances in the pyrogenic oil compared with that obtained using N2 as a medium. Furthermore, the efficacy of CO2 was demonstrated to increase with an increase in the atmospheric concentration. This study implied that catalytic pyrolysis under CO2 conditions is a potential platform for converting toxic chemicals from IMW into syngas through homogeneous reactions with CO2.

The main objectives of this cross-sectional study were to determine the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and depression and to estimate the mediating effects of social network satisfaction, self-esteem, and perceived health status among middle-aged and elderly men living alone, based on the reserve capacity model. Secondary data from a sample of 394 middle-aged and elderly men aged 45 years or older from the 15th Korea Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS) were analyzed. A path analysis model was constructed to evaluate the relationship among SES, social network satisfaction, self-esteem, perceived health status, and depression. The path analysis exhibited significant direct effects of social network satisfaction, self-esteem, and perceived health status on depression and significant indirect effects of SES on depression. There was no direct effect of SES on depression. Social network satisfaction and self-esteem had significant mediating effects of SES on depression. Among middle-aged and elderly men, intrapersonal reserves, which are psychosocial factors including social network satisfaction, self-esteem, and perceived health status, showed more association with depression than tangible reserves such as SES. This suggests that interventions promoting self-esteem and perceived health status could prevent depression.

Background: Korea has achieved health policy objectives in pandemic management so far, namely minimizing mortality, flattening the epidemic curve, and limiting the socio-economic burden of its measures. The key to the Korean government's success in combating COVID-19 lies with the latest digital technologies (DTs). The prompt and effective application of DTs facilitates both containment as well as mitigation strategies and their sub-policy measures. Methods: This article uses an experiential analysis based on an exploratory case study - analysis on field applications of the government's interventions. Information is collected by qualitative methods such as literature analysis, meeting materials, and a review of various government reports (including internal ones) along with academic and professional experiences of the authors. Findings: The article presents the unique Korean health policy approaches in the COVID-19 crisis. First, DTs allow the Korean government to embrace various policy measures together listed in containment strategy, namely altering and warning, epidemiological investigation, quarantine of contacts, case-finding, social distancing, and mask-wearing. Second, DTs allow Korea to integrate containment and mitigation strategies simultaneously. Along with the above measures in containment, healthcare service, medical treatment, and prophylaxis (presymptomatic testing) within mitigation are utilized to prevent a COVID-19 spread. Conclusions: Korea develops DTs in an integrated manner in the early pandemic stage under strong and coordinated government leadership. Above all, the DTs' functions in each pandemic developmental stage are continuously upgraded. Instead of prioritizing policy measures or strategies, therefore, Korea can implement diverse policies simultaneously by integrating DTs effectively. During the COVID-19 outbreak, DTs work as the enablers to connect these two strategies and their measures in Korea. Recommendations: DTs should be at the center of the disaster management paradigm, especially during a pandemic. DTs are facilitators and integrators of containing and mitigating strategies and their policy measures.

The vitamin D receptor (VDR) is a member of the nuclear receptor (NR) superfamily. The VDR binds to active vitamin D3 metabolites, which stimulates downstream transduction signaling involved in various physiological activities such as calcium homeostasis, bone mineralization, and cell differentiation. Quercetin is a widely distributed flavonoidin nature that is known to enhance transactivation of VDR target genes. However, the detailed molecular mechanism underlying VDR activation by quercetin is not well understood. We firstdemonstrated the interaction between quercetin and the VDR at the molecular level by using fluorecence quenching and saturation transfer difference (STD) NMR experiments. The dissociation constant (Kd) of quercetin and the VDR was 21.15 ± 4.31 µM, and the mapping of quercetin subsites for VDR binding was performed using STD-NMR. The binding mode of quercetin was investigated by a docking study combined with molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Quercetin might serve as a scaffold for the development of VDR modulators with selective biological activities.
