RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland cancers (SGCs) are uncommon and account for less than 5% of all head and neck cancers, but they are histologically heterogeneous. No specific therapy, including targeted agents, has consistently improved clinical outcomes in recurrent/metastatic SGC. Recent studies suggest that vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) and platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR) play important roles in SGC. Nintedanib is a potent small-molecule, triple-receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (VEGFR1, VEGFR2, and VEGFR3; fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 [FGFR1], FGFR2, and FGFR3; and PDGFRα and PDGFRß). This study sought to determine the antitumor activity of nintedanib in patients with recurrent or metastatic SGC. METHODS: This open-label, multicenter, phase 2, single-arm study was conducted at 11 hospitals in South Korea. Patients with pathologically confirmed recurrent and/or metastatic SGC for whom at least 1 line of systemic chemotherapy had failed were enrolled. Nintedanib was given orally at 200 mg twice a day until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. The primary endpoint was the response rate. The secondary endpoints were progression-free survival, overall survival, toxicity, and the disease-control rate. The Simon 2-stage minimax design was used. RESULTS: The median age of the patients was 54 years, 60% were female, and 95% had an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0 or 1. The majority of the patients had adenoid cystic carcinoma (65%), and 40% received at least 2 prior rounds of chemotherapy. After 20 patients were enrolled, the study was stopped because no responders were observed at stage I. There were no partial responses, but the disease-control rate was 75% (15 of 20). The median duration of stable disease was 8.2 months (range, 1.76-12.36 months). At the time of the data cutoff, with a median follow-up of 9.5 months, the median overall survival had not been reached, and the progression-free survival rate at 6 months was 60% (95% confidence interval, 0.34-0.79). Grade 3 adverse events included liver enzyme elevation (25%) and nausea/vomiting (5%). Four patients who required a dose reduction because of a grade 3 liver enzyme elevation showed no further grade 3 events. CONCLUSIONS: Single-agent nintedanib did not yield a partial response but did achieve a 75% disease-control rate with long-term stabilization in SGC patients. Because of the high rate and long duration of disease control with a good safety profile, further investigation is warranted. Cancer 2017;123:1958-1964. © 2017 American Cancer Society.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical characteristics associated with chronic pachychoroid neovasculopathy (PNV) accompanying recalcitrant intraretinal cysts. METHODS: This is a retrospective, single-center, case-series study involving 20 eyes of 18 patients with PNV who did not respond to bevacizumab or ranibizumab and had to switch to aflibercept. Optical coherence tomography images were assessed before and after switching of intravitreal injection drug. RESULTS: The intraretinal cysts involved the outer nuclear layer and inner nuclear layer in 15 patients (75.0%), and involved only the inner nuclear layer in five patients (25.0%). All participants showed retinal pigment epithelium atrophy and outer retinal layer defect including external limiting membrane defect co-localized to the intraretinal cystic lesion. With the initial injection, bevacizumab and ranibizumab injections did not show a significant decrease in choroidal thickness (CT). Twenty (100.0%) patients showed poor response of intraretinal cyst response (IRCR). After a switch to aflibercept, IRCR was good in 17 (85.0%) patients and poor in three (15.0%) patients. Reduction of CT was great in aflibercept injections (from 229.0 µm to 204.0 µm, median, p < 0.001). Best-corrected visual acuity did not show significant improvement before or after switching drugs. CONCLUSION: Intravitreal aflibercept injections were more effective in the reduction of CT and IRCR than bevacizumab and ranibizumab injections. The primary source of the intraretinal cyst fluid could be from the choroid.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study analyzed changes in body composition and physical fitness in men with testosterone deficiency (TD) after testosterone treatment (TT) and examined the correlations of body composition and physical fitness with serum testosterone levels and hypogonadal symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy patients with TD were divided into control (group I, n=23) and experimental (group II, n=47) groups. Patients in the experimental group were administered intramuscular testosterone enanthate (250 mg) for six months. The aging males symptom scale (AMS) score, international prostate symptom score (IPSS), body mass index, waist circumference, and serum laboratory values were measured at baseline and at the end of the study. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to assess the patients' body composition. Seven types of basic exercise tests were used to evaluate the patients' physical fitness. RESULTS: After six months, there were no significant differences in group I, while group II had significantly improved IPSS and AMS scores; increased hemoglobin, hematocrit, prostate-specific antigen, and testosterone levels and skeletal muscle mass; and waist circumference, and body fat mass. All elements of the physical fitness test were significantly improved in group II, with the exceptions of flexibility and endurance. Decreased waist circumference was correlated with changes in testosterone levels in group II, and the IPSS, cardiorespiratory fitness, and agility were correlated with improved hypogonadal symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: TT improved the hypogonadal and lower urinary tract symptoms in patients with TD and improved body composition, physical fitness, and metabolic syndrome parameters. Increased testosterone and improved hypogonadal symptoms were correlated with a decrease in waist circumference and an improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness and agility. As such, when implementing TT, we should consider whether these areas may be improved, as this can help to predict the effect.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Although lower body strength and size are often regarded as symbols of masculinity, their relationship to testosterone is unclear. This study aimed to determine the correlation between lower body strength, size, and testosterone levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serum testosterone levels, waist circumference, and body mass index (BMI) were measured in 69 men with erectile dysfunction (age >40 years). The circumferences of the thigh and calf were measured, and the muscle strength of the knee joints was evaluated using an isokinetic dynamometer. Patients were classified into three groups according to testosterone levels (group 1, <230 ng/dL; group 2, 230 to 350 ng/dL; group 3, >350 ng/dL). Differences in calf and thigh circumference, bilateral knee extension, and flexion strength between the three groups were investigated using a one-way analysis of variance. Pearson's chi-square test was used to assess differences in lifestyle habits and underlying diseases. A partial correlation analysis was conducted to determine the association between testosterone levels and lower body size and strength. RESULTS: There was no difference in BMI among the three groups, but waist circumference was significantly larger in group 1 than in groups 2 and 3. When comparing weight-adjusted values, bilateral thigh circumference showed a significant difference among the three groups. There was also a significant difference between the three groups in the weight-adjusted left calf circumference and in the weight-adjusted right knee extension strength. The partial correlation test showed a significant positive correlation between thigh and calf circumference values adjusted for weight and serum testosterone levels. Weight-adjusted knee extension strength demonstrated a significant positive correlation with serum testosterone levels. CONCLUSIONS: Weight-adjusted thigh and calf circumferences, along with the thigh-to-waist ratio, showed a positive correlation with testosterone levels. Weight-adjusted knee extension strength was positively correlated with testosterone levels. Therefore, a robust thigh and strong lower body are related to testosterone.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of evidence of the diagnosis and treatment-related epidemiological studies of symptomatic discoid meniscus. This study analyzed the national epidemiological data for discoid meniscus in South Korea. METHODS: From 2011 to 2019, data related to the diagnosis and procedure codes of discoid meniscus were obtained from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database. All patients encoded as discoid meniscus were included. Data were extracted and further analyzed as follows: (1) the total number and the incidence (cases per 100,000) of discoid meniscus diagnosis per year, (2) sex distribution, (3) age distribution, (4) discoid meniscus ratio (total discoid meniscus coding per total meniscus injury coding), and (5) surgical procedures after discoid meniscus injury. RESULTS: The total number of discoid meniscus diagnosed was 4576 in 2011 and increased to 6639 in 2019, representing a 45.1% increase. The incidence was 9.5 in 2011 and increased to 13.0 in 2019. Concerning sex, discoid meniscus was more common in females (55%) than in males (45%) over the study period. Regarding age, the peak age of discoid meniscus in 2011 was "under 19," whereas in 2019, the peak age was observed in the 50s. The discoid meniscus ratio range was 2.12-2.60% from 2011 to 2019. The total number of meniscectomy increased by 20% from 2000 in 2011 to 2475 in 2014. However, the total number of meniscus repairs was 318 in 2011 and increased to 502 in 2019, indicating an increase of 58%. CONCLUSIONS: The total number and incidence of symptomatic discoid as well as the discoid meniscus ratio and the incidence of total discoid meniscus repair steadily increased from 2011 to 2019. The number of meniscus repair procedures increased more rapidly than that of meniscectomy. The current study helps understand the epidemiology of symptomatic discoid meniscus, its prevention, and cost-saving measures in South Korea.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: In this study, we evaluated 66 patients diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) enrolled in two Korean Cancer Study Group trials to investigate the response and progression patterns in recurrent and/or metastatic ACC treated with vascular endothelial growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (VEGFR-TKIs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated 66 patients diagnosed with ACC who were enrolled in the Korean Cancer Study Group trials. The tumor measurements, clinical data, treatment outcomes, and progression patterns of therapy were analyzed. RESULTS: In the 66 patients (53 receiving axitinib and 13 receiving nintedanib), the disease control rate was 61%, and three patients achieved partial response. The median follow-up, median progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival, and 6-month PFS rate were 27.6%, 12.4%, and 18.1% months and 62.1%, respectively. Among 42 patients who experienced progression, 27 (64.3%) showed target lesion progression. Bone metastasis was an independent poor prognostic factor. CONCLUSION: Overall, most patients demonstrated stable disease with prolonged PFS; however, prominent target lesion progression occurred in some patients. Thus, PFS may capture VEGFR-TKI efficacy better than the objective response rate.

RESUMEN

The increased prevalence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the integration of digital technology into our daily lives have given rise to heightened security risks and the need for more robust security measures. In response to these challenges, physical unclonable functions (PUFs) have emerged as promising solution, offering a highly secure method to generate unpredictable and unique random digital values by leveraging inherent physical characteristics. However, traditional PUFs implementations often require complex hardware and circuitry, which can add to the cost and complexity of the system. We present a novel approach using a random wrinkles PUF (rw-PUF) based on an optically anisotropic, facile, simple, and cost-effective material. These wrinkles contain randomly oriented liquid crystal molecules, resulting in a two-dimensional retardation map corresponding to a complex birefringence pattern. Additionally, our proposed technique allows for customization based on specific requirements using a spatial light modulator, enabling fast fabrication. The random wrinkles PUF has the capability to store multiple data sets within a single PUF without the need for physical alterations. Furthermore, we introduce a concept called 'polyhedron authentication,' which utilizes three-dimensional information storage in a voxelated random wrinkles PUF. This approach demonstrates the feasibility of implementing high-level security technology by leveraging the unique properties of the rw-PUF.

RESUMEN

Background: Lower limb balance ability is reduced after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). However, the recovery of balance based on functional test scores after ACLR is not known because the correlation between balance and clinical scores remains unclear. We aimed to analyze the correlation between lower limb balance assessed by functional test and clinical knee test scores after ACLR. Methods: We evaluated lower limb balance using the anterior-posterior stability index (APSI) of the Biodex Balance System (BBS). Patients underwent clinical tests to evaluate the knee, including the Tegner activity score, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) subjective score, Lysholm score, and KT-2000 arthrometer measurement, hamstring per quadriceps muscle strength ratio at 60°/sec (HQ ratio), and functional performance tests (single-leg hop and single-leg vertical jump tests) 1 year after ACLR. We used a paired t-test to compare continuous preoperative and postoperative variables and Pearson's correlation coefficient to determine the relationship between BBS-APSI and clinical scores. Results: Forty-eight patients (35 men and 13 women; mean age, 28.9 ± 8.3 years) were included. The follow-up period and BBS-APSI were 12.4 ± 2.0 months and 0.9 ± 0.4, respectively. Tegner activity score, IKDC subjective score, Lysholm score, and KT-2000 arthrometer measurement improved significantly postoperatively (p < 0.001). BBS-APSI was correlated with the Tegner activity score (r = -0.335, p = 0.020), IKDC subjective score (r = -0.301, p = 0.037), Lysholm score (r = -0.323, p = 0.025), single-leg hop test results (r = -0.300, p = 0.038), and single-leg vertical jump test results (r = -0.336, p = 0.019). There was no correlation between KT-2000 arthrometer measurement and HQ ratio. Conclusions: BBS-APSI was correlated with functional performance test scores after ACLR, rendering the BBS-APSI as a useful assessment tool to evaluate postoperative functional recovery. Continuously improving balance after ACLR could be useful for functional recovery after surgery.

RESUMEN

Polyamic acid (PAA) was synthesized using the diamine monomer N,N'-[2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,4'-biphenylene]bis(4-aminobenzamide) and dianhydride monomer 4,4'-oxydiphthalic anhydride. Colorless and transparent poly(amide imide) (CPAI) hybrid films were prepared via multi-step thermal imidization of PAA in which various contents of nano-filler were dispersed. The CPAI hybrid films were prepared by dispersing organoclay STN, which was obtained by organically modifying hectorite, in CPAI by solution intercalation with various contents ranging from 1 to 7 wt%. The thermomechanical properties, morphologies, and optical transparencies of the obtained CPAI hybrid films were investigated based on the dispersed STN content, and the results were compared. Some of the clay in the CPAI hybrid film were agglomerated, which was observed using a transmission electron microscope; however, most clays were well-dispersed, with a nano-size of less than 10 nm. The best thermomechanical properties of the CPAI hybrid film were exhibited with an STN content of 3 wt%, but these properties decreased above the critical content. The coefficients of thermal expansion of all the hybrid films were below 20 ppm per °C regardless of the amount of STN, and the yellow index was 1-2 even when the STN content increased to 7 wt%.

RESUMEN

Background: There is no consensus established on postoperative rehabilitation after medial meniscus posterior root tear (MMPRT) repair, including when and how physicians can apply range of motion (ROM) exercise, weight-bearing (WB), brace use, and return to sports (RTS). The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature on postoperative rehabilitation characteristics of MMPRT repair regarding ROM, WB, brace use, and RTS. Methods: A literature search was performed using the Medline/PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Embase databases. The inclusion criteria were English language, human clinical studies, and studies describing rehabilitation protocols after MMPRT repair such as ROM, WB, brace use, and RTS. Abstracts, case reports, cohort studies, controlled laboratory studies, human cadaveric or animal studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses were excluded. Results: Thirteen studies were included. Of the 12 ROM studies, ROM was started immediately within 1 or 2 days after operation in 6 studies and after 2 to 3 weeks of knee immobilization in the rest. Of the 13 WB studies, partial weight-bearing was initiated 1 to 4 weeks after operation in 8 studies and 6 weeks in the rest. Of the 9 brace studies, patients were immobilized by a splint for 2 weeks in 3 studies, and in the rest, a brace with full extension was applied for 3 to 6 weeks after several days of splint application. Of the 7 RTS studies, RTS was allowed at 6 months in 6 studies and 5 to 7 months in 1 study. Conclusions: This systematic review revealed conservative rehabilitation protocols were more widely adapted as ROM and WB were restricted at certain degrees during postoperative periods in most protocols analyzed. However, it is impossible to identify a consensus on rehabilitation protocols as the protocols analyzed in this review were distinct each other and heterogeneous. In the future, a well-designed comparative study among different rehabilitation protocols is essential to establish a consensus.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: c-KIT mutations are found in approximately 15% of patients with malignant melanoma in the Asian population. Regorafenib, an oral multikinase inhibitor, acts against both wild-type and mutant KIT. OBJECTIVE: This multi-institutional, phase II, single-arm study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of regorafenib against metastatic malignant melanoma harbouring c-KIT mutations. METHODS: Patients with metastatic melanoma positive for c-KIT mutations, upon progression after at least one line of systemic treatment, were enroled. Patients received oral regorafenib 160 mg once daily for 3 weeks (4-week cycle). The primary endpoint was disease control rate (DCR), and secondary endpoints were safety, overall response rate (ORR), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: In total, 23 patients were enrolled. c-KIT mutations were frequently reported in exon 11 (14/23, 60.9%), followed by exons 13, 17, and 9 in 5 (21.7%), 5 (21.7%), and 2 (8.7%) patients, respectively. DCR at 8 weeks was 73.9%, with 2 patients (8.7%) achieving complete response, 5 (21.7%) achieving partial response, and 10 (43.5%) showing stable disease. ORR was 30.4% (7/23). The median follow-up period was 15.7 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 9.6-21.3), and median OS and PFS were 21.5 months (95% CI, 15.1-27.9) and 7.1 months (95% CI, 5.0-9.2), respectively. Circulating tumour DNA analysis in selected patients showed high c-KIT correlation (85.7%) with tissue-based tumour mutational profiles. The most common adverse events (AEs) were skin reactions, including palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia (52.2%), and grade 3 AEs were reported in 39.1% (9/23) of the patients. CONCLUSION: Regorafenib in second- or later-line settings demonstrated significant activity in patients with metastatic melanoma harbouring c-KIT mutations.

RESUMEN

Soft actuators based on liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are captivating significant interest because of their unique properties combining the programmable liquid crystalline molecular order and elasticity of polymeric materials. For practical applications, the ability to perform multimodal shape changes in a single LCE actuator at a subsecond level is a bottleneck. Here, we fabricate a monodomain LCE powered by electrostatic force, which enables fast multidirectional bending, oscillation, rotation, and complex actuation with a high degree of freedom. By tuning the dielectric constant and resistivity in LCE gels, a complete cycle of oscillation and rotation only takes 0.1 s. In addition, monodomain actuators exhibit anisotropic actuation behaviors that promise a more complex deployment in a potential electromechanical system. The presented study will pave the way for electrostatically controllable isothermal manipulation for a fast and multimode soft actuator.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The treatment of male breast cancer (MBC) has been extrapolated from female breast cancer (FBC) because of its rarity despite their different clinicopathologic characteristics. We aimed to investigate the distribution of intrinsic subtypes based on immunohistochemistry, their clinical impact, and treatment pattern in clinical practice through a multicenter study in Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed clinical data of 248 MBC patients from 18 institutions across the country from January 1995 to July 2016. RESULTS: The median age of MBC patients was 63 years (range, 25 to 102 years). Among 148 intrinsic subtype classified patients, 61 (41.2%), 44 (29.7%), 29 (19.5%), and 14 (9.5%) were luminal A, luminal B, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, and triple-negative breast cancer, respectively. Luminal A subtype showed trends for superior survival compared to other subtypes. Most hormone receptor-positive patients (166 patients, 82.6%) received adjuvant endocrine treatment. Five-year completion of adjuvant endocrine treatment was associated with superior disease-free survival (DFS) in patients classified with an intrinsic subtype (hazard ratio [HR], 0.15; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.04 to 0.49; p=0.002) and in all patients (HR, 0.16; 95% CI, 0.05 to 0.54; p=0.003). CONCLUSION: Distribution of subtypes of MBC was similar to FBC and luminal type A was most common. Overall survival tended to be improved for luminal A subtype, although there was no statistical significance. Completion of adjuvant endocrine treatment was associated with prolonged DFS in intrinsic subtype classified patients. MBC patients tended to receive less treatment. MBC patients should receive standard treatment according to guidelines as FBC patients.

RESUMEN

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is one of the most common overuse injuries experienced by athletes. It is characterized by pain and functional deficits that lead to decreased performance, thereby limiting sports activity. Therefore, optimal training interventions are required to improve physical fitness and function while minimizing pain due to PFPS. This study aimed to compare and analyze the effects of high-intensity aquatic training (AT) and bicycling training (BT) in male athletes with PFPS. Fifty-four athletes with PFPS were divided into AT and BT intervention groups. Intervention training was conducted three times per week for 8 weeks. Cardiorespiratory fitness was evaluated using the graded exercise test (GXT) based on peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak), and anaerobic threshold. For the knee strength test, extension and flexion were performed and measured using isokinetic equipment. One-leg hop tests and the Y-balance test (YBT) were performed to evaluate dynamic balance, and the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) scoring system was used for subjective knee evaluation. The GXT, YBT, and IKDC scores were reported according to the group and duration of the intervention. After training, VO2 peak, YBT, knee extension strength, and IKDC score improved significantly in both the AT and BT groups compared with the pre-training values. Furthermore, the AT group exhibited significant improvement compared with the BT group. We demonstrated that AT and BT effectively improved the symptoms and muscle strength of athletes with PFPS who were only able to engage in limited high-intensity field training. AT produced a modestly better effect than BT.

RESUMEN

We report a rare case of a patient who developed an orbital abscess several years after successful orbital medial wall fracture repair. A 37-year-old female patient who underwent orbital fracture repair with a titanium Medpor® orbital implant two years prior visited the clinic for pain, conjunctival injection, discharge, and lid swelling of the right eye. Orbital CT revealed severe orbital cellulitis and sinusitis. After administering antibiotics, the sinusitis was successfully resolved. However, the orbital inflammation around the implant did not improve, forming an orbital abscess. Abscess drainage and implant removal were performed. The removed implant was infected at the center, exhibiting a yellowish abscess-like discoloration. The patient improved rapidly and recovered without complications. In rare cases, orbital cellulitis and orbital abscesses develop even after a considerable period of time after orbital fracture repair using a non-absorbable porous orbital implant. In such cases, delayed orbital implant infection should be suspected as the cause, and an imaging study should be performed. If the patient does not respond to antibiotic treatment, it may be necessary to remove the infected implant with immediate drainage.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To investigate the characteristics and distribution of ocular dominance in primary open-angle glaucoma eyes. In addition, we tried to catch any trend of ocular dominance according to the stage of disease. METHODS: Two hundred participants with bilateral open-angle glaucoma underwent ocular dominant testing by "the hole-ina-card" test. Using optical coherence tomography, macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer, as well as circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness were measured and compared according to ocular dominance. Of the two eyes of one subject, the eye with less glaucomatous damage based on mean deviation was considered to be the "better eye" in our study. RESULTS: Ocular dominance was in the right eye in 66% of the population and ocular dominance was positioned in the better eye in 70% of the population (p = 0.001 and p = 0.002, respectively). In conditional logistic regression analyses, right eye and better mean deviation were significantly associated with ocular dominance (p = 0.001 and p = 0.002, respectively). Ocular dominance tends to be present in the better eye and this trend was more apparent as the severity of glaucoma increased. Intereye comparison of visual field indices and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness between dominant versus nondominant eye become apparent in moderate and advanced glaucoma whereas it was not as apparent in early glaucoma. CONCLUSIONS: In glaucomatous eyes, laterality and severity of glaucoma determined ocular dominance. Intereye difference between nondominant and dominant eyes increased with the severity of glaucoma. Our findings suggest the existence of potential reciprocal interactions between ocular dominance and glaucoma.

RESUMEN

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have various potential applications in fuel cells and solar cells. In this regard, the physicochemical properties of an organic-inorganic [NH3(CH2)6NH3]CuCl4 crystal was conducted. The crystals had a monoclinic structure with space group P21/n and lattice constants a = 7.2224 Å, b = 7.6112 Å, c = 23.3315 Å, ß = 91.930°, and Z = 4 at 300 K, and the phase transition temperature (T C) was determined to be 363 K by X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry experiments. From the nuclear magnetic resonance experimental results, the changes in the 1H chemical shifts in NH3 and the influence of C1 located close to NH3 in the [NH3(CH2)6NH3] cation near T C are determined to be large, which implies that the structural change of CuCl4 linked to N-H⋯Cl is large. The 1H spin-lattice relaxation time (T 1ρ) in NH3 is shorter than that of CH2, and the 13C T 1ρ values for C1 close to NH3 are shorter than those of C2 and C3 due to the influence of the paramagnetic Cu2+ ion in square planar geometry CuCl4. The structural mechanism for the phase transition was the change in the N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bond and was associated with the structural dynamics of the CuCl4 anion.

RESUMEN

Poly(amic acid) (PAA) is prepared by the reaction of dianhydride 4,4'-biphthalic anhydride and diamine bis[4-(3-aminophenoxy)phenyl]sulfone in N,N'-dimethylacetamide. Two types of fillers were dispersed in the as-synthesized PAA via a solution intercalation method; polyimide (PI) hybrid films were synthesized under various heat treatment conditions. Octylamine (C8) was introduced into graphene sheets (C8-GS) and bentonite (C8-BTN), which were then used as nanofillers in the PI hybrid films. The synthesized nanofillers were used in varying amounts of 0.25-1.00 wt% with respect to the matrix PI. The thermal and morphological properties and optical transparency of the hybrid films were investigated and compared for both C8-GS and C8-BTN at varying nanofiller content. The C8-BTN nanocomposite showed superior thermal properties, and optical transparency, and the filler was well dispersed in the PI matrix compared to the C8-GS nanocomposite. The thermal stability of the hybrid films improved upon the addition of small amounts of the nanofiller. However, beyond a certain critical filler concentration, the thermal stability declined. These results were verified through the dispersion of fillers via transmission electron microscopy.

RESUMEN

Poly(amic acid) (PAA) was synthesized from dianhydride 4,4-(4,4-isopropylidenediphenoxy)bis(phthalic anhydride) and diamine bis [4-(3-aminophenoxy) phenyl] sulfone. Colorless and transparent polyimide (CPI) hybrid films were synthesized through thermal imidization after dispersing nanofillers using an intercalation method in a PAA solution. C16-GS and C16-MMT, in which hexadecylamine (C16) was substituted on graphene sheet (GS) and montmorillonite (MMT), respectively, were used as nanofillers to reinforce the CPI hybrid films. These two nanofillers were admixed in varying loadings of 0.25 to 1.00 wt%, and the morphology, thermal properties, and optical transparency of the hybrid films were investigated and compared. The results suggest that the thermal properties of the CPI hybrid films can be improved by adding only a small amount of nanofiller. Transmission electron microscopy results of the CPI hybrid film containing two types of fillers suggested that the fillers were well dispersed in the nano-size in the matrix polymer; however, some of the fillers were observed as agglomerated particles above the critical concentration of 0.50 wt%.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The Y-Balance test (YBT) is commonly used to evaluate balance after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). However, several studies have also used it as a functional performance test (FPT). PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the relationship between YBT scores and measures of knee joint laxity, static balance, knee flexor and extensor torque and strength ratio, and FPTs. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: Fifty-nine patients who underwent ACLR using hamstring autografts were retrospectively analyzed. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to determine the strength of the association between scores on the YBT and selected outcomes including laxity measured via the KT-2000 arthrometer, static balance measured via the Biodex Balance System, isokinetic muscle torque and hamstring-to-quadriceps (HQ) ratio, and performance on the single leg hop test and the single leg vertical jump test. RESULTS: Forty-six men and 13 women were included. The mean age and follow-up period were 29.6 ± 9.6 years and 12.4 ± 2.1 months, respectively. The KT-2000 arthrometer measures, Biodex Balance System scores, and HQ ratio measurements were not significantly correlated with the YBT scores. All YBT scores, except the YBT-anterior score, correlated with the isokinetic extensor and flexor torques (r-values: 0.271-0.520). All the YBT scores had significant weak to moderate correlations with the single leg hop test and single leg vertical jump test scores: YBT-anterior (r = 0.303, r = 0.258), YBT-posteromedial (r = 0.475, r = 0.412), YBT-posterolateral (r = 0.525, r = 0.377), and YBT-composite (r = 0.520, r = 0.412). CONCLUSION: Post-ACLR YBT scores correlated with functional performance and muscle strength, but not with static balance, joint laxity, and HQ ratios. The YBT scores as a measure of balance are related to improved functional performance and isokinetic torque measures. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 3.
