Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is responsible for the most severe form of acute and chronic viral hepatitis. We previously proposed that the Deltavirus genus is composed of eight major clades. However, few sequences were available to confirm this classification. Moreover, little is known about the structural and functional consequences of HDV variability. One practical consequence is the failure of most quantification assays to properly detect or quantify plasmatic HDV RNA. Between 2001 and 2014, 2,152 HDV strains were prospectively collected and genotyped in our reference laboratory by means of nucleotide sequencing and extensive phylogenetic analyses of a 400-nucleotide region of the genome (R0) from nucleotides 889 to 1289 encompassing the 3' end of the delta protein-coding gene. In addition, the full-length genome sequence was generated for 116 strains selected from the different clusters, allowing for in-depth characterization of the HDV genotypes and subgenotypes. This study confirms that the HDV genus is composed of eight genotypes (HDV-1 to HDV-8) defined by an intergenotype similarity >85% or >80%, according to the partial or full-length genome sequence, respectively. Furthermore, genotypes can be segregated into two to four subgenotypes, characterized by an intersubgenotype similarity >90% (>84% for HDV-1) over the whole genome sequence. Systematic analysis of genome and protein sequences revealed highly conserved functional nucleotide and amino acid motifs and positions across all (sub)genotypes, indicating strong conservatory constraints on the structure and function of the genome and the protein. CONCLUSION: This study provides insight into the genetic diversity of HDV and a clear view of its geographical localization and allows speculation as to the worldwide spread of the virus, very likely from an initial African origin. The estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects of butylparaben (BuPB), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and propyl gallate (PG) were evaluated for individual compounds as well as for binary mixtures, using an estrogen-dependent reporter gene assay in T47D-Kbluc breast cancer cells and an estrogen-dependent proliferation assay in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. In terms of estrogenicity the potency of the selected compounds increased from BHA < PG < BuPB in the luciferase assay (with BHT showing no significant estrogenic activity), while in the proliferation assay the following order was observed: BHT < BHA < BuPB (with PG showing no significant estrogenic activity). Non-monotonic dose-response curves were obtained for BuPB (in both assays) and PG (in the luciferase assay), respectively. In the presence of estradiol, a significant anti-estrogenic activity was observed in both cell lines for PG, BuPB and BHA, while BHT showed weak anti-estrogenic activity only in T47D-Kbluc cells. The evaluation of binary mixtures confirmed the endocrine disruptive potential of the compounds, their individual potency being correlated with that of the mixtures. All mixtures were able to reduce the estradiol-induced luminescence or cell proliferation, an effect that was accurately predicted by the dose addition mathematical model, suggesting the same (or at least partially overlapping) modes of action for the tested compounds. The results of the present study emphasize the importance of a cumulative risk assessment of endocrine disruptors.

Chitotriosidase, an enzyme secreted by activated macrophages, is widely used as a biomarker for therapeutic monitoring and patient follow-up in Gaucher disease (GD), a lysosomal disorder caused by an inherited deficiency of glucocerebrosidase. We analyzed the long-term evolution of chitotriosidase aiming to establish an accurate model that describes the influence of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) and the impact of several covariates. A total of 55 patients with non-neuronopathic (type 1) GD were followed for almost 17 years (during a maximum of 7.57 and 8.96 years, before and after the onset of ERT, respectively). Plasma chitotriosidase activity, measured yearly before the onset of ERT and at 6-month intervals after the initiation of ERT, was analyzed as a function of several covariates (age at diagnosis and at ERT initiation, nature of the most frequent genotypes, spleen status and the occurrence of bone complications). The evolution of chitotriosidase was approximated by a sigmoidal function, which allows the calculation of predicted values, based on several parameters inferred from our data. Splenectomy and the occurrence of bone complications significantly delayed the decline in chitotriosidase activity and induced higher mean residual values after long-term (4-9 years) ERT. Likewise, patients who started ERT infusions under 15 years of age had significantly higher mean residual chitotriosidase activities. The influence of other covariates did not reach statistical significance. In conclusion, we propose a novel model describing the evolution of chitotriosidase, allowing more accurate treatment adjustments, according to the variations of this biomarker.

PURPOSE: Endometriosis has an incidence reaching up to 50% in infertile women. Cytokine-mediated immune responses seem to play an important role in endometriosis pathogenesis, but still the etiology and pathophysiology remain unclear. In the current study we tried to investigate whether there is a relationship between IL-10 genetic polymorphism, serum levels of IL-10 and the presence of advanced endometriosis. METHODS: The presence of IL-10 592C/A, 819T/C, 1082G/A promoter polymorphisms and IL-10 serum levels were investigated in advanced endometriosis patients compared to healthy controls. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood leukocytes and further analyzed by PCR. RESULTS: IL-10 serum levels were higher in endometriosis group compared to controls (1.48, 0.68, p < 0.001). We have observed an association between IL-10 592C/C and 819C/C genotypes, presence of C alleles and an increased risk of endometriosis. No difference was observed in IL-10 serum levels corresponding to different alleles or genotypes. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that IL-10 592A/C and 819T/C promoter polymorphisms confer susceptibility to advanced endometriosis. No associations were found between the IL-10 1082A/G polymorphism and susceptibility to advanced endometriosis.

BACKGROUND Retinopathy is a serious complication related to prematurity and a leading cause of childhood blindness. The aggressive posterior form of retinopathy of prematurity (APROP) has a worse anatomical and functional outcome following laser therapy, as compared with the classic form of the disease. The main outcome measures are the APROP regression rate, structural outcomes, and complications associated with intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) versus laser photocoagulation in APROP. MATERIAL AND METHODS This is a retrospective case series that includes infants with APROP who received either IVB or laser photocoagulation and had a follow-up of at least 60 weeks (for the laser photocoagulation group) and 80 weeks (for the IVB group). In the first group, laser photocoagulation of the retina was carried out and in the second group, 1 bevacizumab injection was administered intravitreally. The following parameters were analyzed in each group: sex, gestational age, birth weight, postnatal age and postmenstrual age at treatment, APROP regression, sequelae, and complications. Statistical analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel and IBM SPSS (version 23.0). RESULTS The laser photocoagulation group consisted of 6 premature infants (12 eyes) and the IVB group consisted of 17 premature infants (34 eyes). Within the laser photocoagulation group, the evolution was favorable in 9 eyes (75%) and unfavorable in 3 eyes (25%). Within the IVB group, APROP regressed in 29 eyes (85.29%) and failed to regress in 5 eyes (14.71%). These differences are statistically significant, as proved by the McNemar test (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS The IVB group had a statistically significant better outcome compared with the laser photocoagulation group, in APROP in our series.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Aim of the study was to investigate interleukin (IL)-4 serum levels in patients with advanced endometriosis and whether IL-4 promoter region (-590C/T) genetic polymorphism is involved in genetic susceptibility to endometriosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: IL-4 serum levels and IL-4 -590C/T genetic polymorphism were determined for 80 patients with advanced endometriosis and 85 healthy fertile women using a multiplex cytokine kit, with a Luminex 200 system; high molecular weight genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood leukocytes, and further analyzed by PCR amplification and restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-PFLP). The relationship between IL-4 serum levels, genotypes and haplotypes and the presence of endometriosis was explored. RESULTS: Interleukin 4 serum levels were significantly higher in the endometriosis group compared to controls (138,459 compared to 84,710, p < 0.001). No significant difference was observed in IL-4 serum levels between genotypes. There were no differences in IL-4 -590C/T genotypes and allele frequencies between control women and patients with endometriosis (χ (2) = 0.496, and χ (2) = 0.928, OR = 1.3636, CI: 0.725-2.564). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that in patients with advanced stages of endometriosis there is a higher serum level of IL-4, and that this value, or the presence of the disease, is not influenced by the presence of IL-4 -590C/T genetic polymorphism.

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQL) and voice handicap index (VHI) of laryngectomies seem to be relevant regarding voice rehabilitation. The aim of this study is to assess the impact on HRQL and VHI of laryngectomies, following voice rehabilitation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study done at the Ear, Nose, and Throat Department of the Emergency County Hospital. Sixty-five laryngectomees were included in this study, of which 62 of them underwent voice rehabilitation. Voice handicap and QOL were assessed using the QOL questionnaires developed by the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC); variables used were functional scales (physical, role, cognitive, emotional, and social), symptom scales (fatigue, pain, and nausea and vomiting), global QOL scale (pain, swallowing, senses, speech, social eating, social contact, and sexuality), and the functional, physical, and emotional aspects of the voice handicap (one-way ANOVA test). RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 59.22 (standard deviation = 9.00) years. A total of 26 (40%) patients had moderate VHI (between 31 and 60) and 39 (60%) patients had severe VHI (higher than 61). Results of the HRQL questionnaires showed that patients who underwent speech therapy obtained better scores in most scales (P = 0.000). Patients with esophageal voice had a high score for functional scales compared with or without other voice rehabilitation methods (P = 0.07), and the VHI score for transesophageal prosthesis was improved after an adjustment period. The global health status and VHI scores showed a statistically significant correlation between speaker groups. CONCLUSION: The EORTC and the VHI questionnaires offer more information regarding life after laryngectomy.

THE AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study was to investigate the serum pro-inflammatory cytokine profile in patients with diagnosed endometriosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 160 women, who were divided in two study groups (Group I - endometriosis; Group 2 - healthy). We evaluated the serum levels of interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-5, IL-6, IL-7, and IL-12, and of tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α) with the use of Human Multiplex Cytokine Panels. RESULTS: The serum level of IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α is significantly higher in women with endometriosis compared to women free of disease, from the control group (mean 10.777, 183.027, and 131.326, respectively, compared to 3.039, 70.043, and 75.285, respectively; p = 0.002, p < 0.001, and p = 0.015, respectively). No significant differences in the serum levels of IL-5 and IL-12 were observed between the studied groups, and IL-7 had a very low detection rate. CONCLUSIONS: Women with endometriosis have elevated levels of key pro-inflammatory cytokines, i.e. IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α. At the same time, IL-1ß and IL-6 could be used as predictors for endometriosis.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a frequent gynecologic disease with a severe impact on the quality of life in the affected women; its pathogenesis is yet to be fully understood, with an altered immunity as a possible key factor. The present study aimed to investigate the serum anti-inflammatory cytokine profile in the patients with endometriosis compared with the healthy controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and sixty women were included, divided into two study groups (Group I - endometriosis; Group 2 - healthy women). We evaluated the serum levels of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), IL-2, IL-2R, IL-4, IL-10, IL-13, and IL-15 with the use of Human multiplex cytokine panels. Statistical analyses (normality distribution analysis, independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test) were performed using IBM SPSS software (version 22.0) and GraphPad Prism (version 5.00); receiver operating characteristic curve were used to demonstrate the diagnostic performance of the studied markers. RESULTS: The mean serum level of IL-1Ra, IL-4, and IL-10 were significantly higher in women with endometriosis compared to women free of disease from the control group (30.155, 138.459, and 1.489, respectively, compared to 14.109, 84.710, and 0.688, respectively; P < 0.001, P < 0.001, and P = 0.002, respectively.). No significant differences in the mean serum levels of IL-2, IL-13, and IL-15 were observed between the studied groups and IL-2R had a very low detection rate. CONCLUSION: Endometriosis is associated with elevated levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines, IL-1Ra, IL-4, and IL-10, markers that have a potential role as a prognostic factor for endometriosis.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique based on the principle of low-coherence interferometry that captures detailed images of ocular structures. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease that can lead to damage of the optic nerve and retina, which can be depicted by OCT. The purpose of this pilot study is to determine whether macular OCT can be used as a biomarker in the detection of retrochiasmal lesions of the visual pathway in MS patients. We conducted a prospective study in which we included 52 MS patients and 27 healthy controls. All participants underwent brain MRI, visual field testing, and OCT evaluation of the thicknesses of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL), macular ganglion cell layer (GCL), and macular inner plexiform layer (IPL). OCT measurements were adjusted for optic neuritis (ON). VF demonstrated poor capability to depict a retrochiasmal lesion identified by brain MRI (PPV 0.50). In conclusion, the OCT analysis of the macula appears to excel in identifying retrochiasmal MS lesions compared to VF changes. The alterations in the GCL and IPL demonstrate the most accurate detection of retrochiasmal visual pathway changes in MS patients.

Retrograde axonal neurodegeneration along the visual pathway-either direct or trans-synaptic-has already been demonstrated in multiple sclerosis (MS), as well as in compressive, vascular, or posttraumatic lesions of the visual pathway. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) can noninvasively track macular and optic nerve changes occurring as a result of this phenomenon. Our paper aimed to review the existing literature regarding hemimacular atrophic changes in the ganglion cell layer identified using OCT examination in MS patients without prior history of optic neuritis. Homonymous hemimacular atrophy has been described in post-chiasmal MS lesions, even in patients with normal visual field results. Temporal and nasal macular OCT evaluation should be performed separately in all MS patients, in addition to an optic nerve OCT evaluation and a visual field exam.

INTRODUCTION: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), presents diverse clinical manifestations and multi-organ involvement. This study aimed to evaluate the extra-pulmonary histopathological patterns underpinning COVID-19-induced lesions in cardiac, hepatic, renal, brainstem, and splenic tissues. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The research involved conventional forensic autopsies conducted between April 2020 and April 2021 on individuals with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Tissues were processed and stained for histological examination. Differences in patients with and without diffuse alveolar damage (DAD) were evaluated. RESULTS: In our study of 79 COVID-19 autopsies conducted on unvaccinated patients besides lung involvement, the patients had histological changes in at least two out of five (brain, heart, liver, kidney, and spleen) organs. Notable findings include hepatitis observed in 46.8 % of cases, 21.5 % with lobular hepatitis, and 41.8 % with liver steatosis. Additionally, 69.6 % exhibited acute tubular necrosis, and 55.7 % had varying degrees of splenic lymphocyte depletion. Almost 41 % of cases had pericardial effusion, 36.7 % myocarditis, 24.1 % myocardial infarction, and 12.7 % of cases had encephalitis. Acute tubular necrosis (78.6 %) was the most frequent histopathological finding observed in patients with DAD. Myocarditis was described in 45.9 % of the patients without DAD. DISCUSSION: The autopsy findings in our cohort of COVID-19 victims align with international scientific literature. Distinguishing viral-induced myocarditis, encephalitis, hepatitis, or systemic inflammatory syndrome remains challenging. CONCLUSION: Post-mortem analysis identified lesions associated with SARS-CoV-2 in multiple organs, highlighting the systemic nature of the virus and emphasizing the need for continued research into organ-specific damage and long-term sequelae of COVID-19.

The primary targets of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the lungs are type I pneumocytes, macrophages, and endothelial cells. We aimed to identify lung cells targeted by SARS-CoV-2 using viral nucleocapsid protein staining and morphometric features on patients with fatal COVID-19. We conducted a retrospective analysis of fifty-one autopsy cases of individuals who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. Demographic and clinical information were collected from forensic reports, and lung tissue was examined for microscopic lesions and the presence of specific cell types. Half of the evaluated cohort were older than 71 years, and the majority were male (74.5%). In total, 24 patients presented diffuse alveolar damage (DAD), and 50.9% had comorbidities (56.9% obesity, 33.3% hypertension, 15.7% diabetes mellitus). Immunohistochemical analysis showed a similar pattern of infected macrophages, infected type I pneumocytes, and endothelial cells, regardless of the presence of DAD (p > 0.5). The immunohistochemical reactivity score (IRS) was predominantly moderate but without significant differences between patients with and without DAD (p = 0.633 IRS for type I pneumocytes, p = 0.773 IRS for macrophage, and p = 0.737 for IRS endothelium). The nucleus/cytoplasm ratio shows lower values in patients with DAD (median: 0.29 vs. 0.35), but the difference only reaches a tendency for statistical significance (p = 0.083). Our study confirms the presence of infected macrophages, type I pneumocytes, and endothelial cells with a similar pattern in patients with and without diffuse alveolar damage.

Background and aims: The COVID-19 lockdowns are reported to have negatively influenced the wellbeing and learning efficacy of students. In this context, we analyzed the psychological impact of the COVID-19 quarantine on healthcare students, a subpopulation experiencing high stress levels. Methods: Our survey-based, cross-sectional study assessed wellbeing indicators, lifestyle and learning behaviors before and during the quarantine for 388 Romanian healthcare students. Results: Our findings included the increase in phone and social media use, at the expense of formal and independent study time; deteriorations in mood, self-organization capacity and learning efficacy, and increased procrastination behaviors. Unexpectedly, our study identified an improvement in sleep quality and duration. The increase in social media use was less severe among rural students. We identified correlations between study time, online activities (including social media), wellbeing indicators and procrastination. Conclusion: Our study draws attention to quarantine-induced deteriorations of wellbeing and learning capacity in an important category of students.

Inflammatory bowel diseases are chronic conditions characterized by periods of remission, alternating with episodes of exacerbation, in which the primary therapeutic target is mucosal healing. Although colonoscopy is currently considered the gold standard for assessing disease activity, it presents a significant number of disadvantages. Over time, various inflammatory biomarkers have been proposed to detect disease activation, but current biomarkers have many limitations. Our study aimed to analyze the most commonly used biomarkers for patient monitoring and follow-up both independently and taken together as a group, in order to propose an improved activity score that more accurately reflects the changes occurring at the intestinal level, in order to limit the number of colonoscopic interventions. By applying logistic regression as a method of statistical analysis to the retrospectively collected data, we obtained an easy-to-calculate improved score that quantifies the chance that a given patient may be in remission or in a period of endoscopic activity. To achieve a widely accessible score that is easily accessible in clinical practice, we have included only the most commonly used clinical and biological parameters.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a common neurological disease affecting the optic nerve, directly or indirectly, through transsynaptic axonal degeneration along the visual pathway. New ophthalmological tools, arguably the most important being optical coherence tomography (OCT), could prove paramount in redefining MS diagnoses and shaping their follow-up protocols, even when the optic nerve is not involved. METHODS: A prospective clinical study was conducted. In total, 158 eyes from patients previously diagnosed with relapsing remitting MS (RRMS)-with or without optic neuritis (ON), clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) with or without ON, and healthy controls were included. Each patient underwent an ophthalmologic exam and OCT evaluation for both eyes (a posterior pole analysis (PPA) and the optic nerve head radial circle protocol (ONH-RC)). RESULTS: The macular retinal thickness (the 4 × 4, respectively, 2 × 2 grid) and thickness of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) were investigated. Various layers of the retina were also compared. Our study observed significant pRNFL thinning in the RRMS eyes compared to the control group, the pRNFL atrophy being more severe in the RRMS-ON eyes than the RRMS-NON eyes. In the ON group, the macular analysis showed statistically significant changes in the RRMS-ON eyes when compared only to the CIS-ON eyes, regarding decreases in the inner plexiform layer (IPL) thickness and inner nuclear layer (INL) on the central 2 × 2 macular grid. The neurodegenerative process affected both the inner retina and pRNFL, with clinical damage appearing for the latter in the following order: CIS-NON, CIS-ON, RRMS-NON, and RRMS-ON. In the presence of optic neuritis, SMRR patients presented an increase in their outer retina thickness compared to CIS patients. CONCLUSIONS: To differentiate the MS patients from the CIS patients, in the absence of optic neuritis, OCT Posterior Pole Analysis could be a useful tool when using a central 2 × 2 sectors macular grid. Retinal changes in MS seem to start from the fovea and spread to the posterior pole. Finally, MS could lead to alterations in both the inner and outer retina, along with pRNFL.

We aimed to evaluate the primary lung postmortem macro- and microscopic biomarkers and factors associated with diffuse alveolar damage in patients with fatal coronavirus (COVID-19). We retrospectively analyzed lung tissue collected from autopsies performed in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, between April 2020 and April 2021 on patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). We examined 79 patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, ages 34 to 96 years, split into two groups using the cut-off value of 70 years. Arterial hypertension (38%) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (19%) were the most common comorbidities with similar distribution between groups (p-values > 0.14). Macroscopically, bloody exudate was more frequently observed among patients < 70 years (33/36 vs. 29/43, p-value = 0.0091). Diffuse alveolar damage (53.1%) was similarly observed among the evaluated groups (p-value = 0.1354). Histopathological biomarkers of alveolar edema in 83.5% of patients, interstitial pneumonia in 74.7%, and microthrombi in 39.2% of cases were most frequently observed. Half of the evaluated lungs had an Ashcroft score of up to 2 and an alveolar air capacity of up to 12.5%. Bronchopneumonia (11/43 vs. 3/36, p-value = 0.0456) and interstitial edema (9/43 vs. 2/36, p-value = 0.0493) were significantly more frequent in older patients. Age (median: 67.5 vs. 77 years, p-value = 0.023) and infection with the beta variant of the virus (p-value = 0.0071) proved to be significant factors associated with diffuse alveolar damage.

Electronic nose (e-nose) is a new technology applied for the identification of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in breath air. Measuring VOC in exhaled breath can adequately identify airway inflammation, especially in asthma. Its noninvasive character makes e-nose an attractive technology applicable in pediatrics. We hypothesized that an electronic nose could discriminate the breath prints of patients with asthma from controls. A cross-sectional study was conducted and included 35 pediatric patients. Eleven cases and seven controls formed the two training models (models A and B). Another nine cases and eight controls formed the external validation group. Exhaled breath samples were analyzed using Cyranose 320, Smith Detections, Pasadena, CA, USA. The discriminative ability of breath prints was investigated by principal component analysis (PCA) and canonical discriminative analysis (CDA). Cross-validation accuracy (CVA) was calculated. For the external validation step, accuracy, sensitivity and specificity were calculated. Duplicate sampling of exhaled breath was obtained for ten patients. E-nose was able to discriminate between the controls and asthmatic patient group with a CVA of 63.63% and an M-distance of 3.13 for model A and a CVA of 90% and an M-distance of 5.55 for model B in the internal validation step. In the second step of external validation, accuracy, sensitivity and specificity were 64%, 77% and 50%, respectively, for model A, and 58%, 66% and 50%, respectively, for model B. Between paired breath sample fingerprints, there were no significant differences. An electronic nose can discriminate pediatric patients with asthma from controls, but the accuracy obtained in the external validation was lower than the CVA obtained in the internal validation step.

AIM: This study assesses the value of intraplacental vascularization indices, determined by three-dimensional (3D) power Doppler ultrasound, in the evaluation of placental circulation. A prospective study has been conducted on two groups of pregnant women. Group I included pregnant women with a normal evolution of the pregnancy, whereas group II consisted of pregnant women with preeclampsia. The subjects were assessed by ultrasound between the 28th and 38th week of amenorrhea. Intraplacental vascularization was studied by 3D and Doppler ultrasound. Intraplacental vascularization indices were calculated using the VOCAL program, whereas statistical processing was completed using descriptive and comparative statistical methods. RESULTS: The values of the three intraplacental vascularization indices were lower in the group of pregnancies with preeclampsia compared with the group with normal pregnancies. In normal pregnancies, the evolution of umbilical resistivity index (RI) values was statistically proven to be significantly correlated with the values of intraplacental vascularization indices. In the case of pathological pregnancies, RI values could be maintained within normal limits, whereas vascularization, flow, and vascularization-flow index values decreased significantly compared with the group of normal pregnancies. CONCLUSIONS: The determination of intraplacental vascularization indices can play an important role in the monitoring of placental circulation in pregnancies with a normal evolution and those with preeclampsia.
