RESUMEN

AIM: To investigate the nurses' work environment in university hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic brought challenging times for nurses worldwide. In Brazil, as well as in several countries, nurses are working hard in hospital settings caring for patients infected with the virus, sometimes with unfavourable work environment conditions. METHODS: This study was a convergent embedded mixed methods research. The sample comprised 104 nurses from three Brazilian university hospitals. Data were collected in April-June 2020 from an online questionnaire with a self-reporting Likert scale survey designed to measure the nurses' perceptions of their work environment. Qualitative data in the form of written comments were also collected through an open question. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. RESULTS: The quantitative results showed that the responses to 'I received training on the correct use of personal protective equipment' and 'I am afraid of being infected' items had the best and worst evaluations, respectively. The qualitative findings revealed five themes: feeling of insecurity, lack of personal protective equipment, lack of diagnostic tests, changes in the care flow and fear of the unknown. CONCLUSION: The study has highlighted the challenges faced by hospital nurses while caring for patients with COVID-19. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND NURSING POLICY: The gaps identified will assist the policymakers and hospital managers in developing policies to enhance the support offered to nurses and improve the care provided to patients with COVID-19 in university hospitals. The results also indicate the need for attention to the mental health of the professionals due to the increasing workload and treatment of an illness hitherto unknown.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To understand the meanings of care to brain dead potential organ donors for nurses, and construct a theoretical model. METHOD: Qualitative study based on the Grounded Theory approach. Data were collected through open interviews with 12 nurses, distributed in three sample groups in a university hospital in northeastern Brazil, from December 2010 to June 2011. RESULTS: The phenomenon Unveiling multiple relationships and interactions of nurses in the complexity of patient care in brain dead potential donors is supported by the interrelationship of five categories and results from the need to organize care practices in the context of the intensive care unit, considering the factors involved in the relationship between nurses, staff and family and reveals challenges for nurses imposed by the complexity of the care process. CONCLUSIONS: The meaning of care to brain dead potential donors involves understanding the complexity of this patient who can save somebody's life through organ donation.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To know how managers of public and private companies view lactation support rooms and their implantation. METHOD: This is study is based on qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive research. Twenty managers from Greater Florianópolis participated in the research, in 2015. Data were collected by means of semi-structured/projective interviews, and subjected to content analysis associated with Atlas.ti software. RESULTS: Data analysis led to the following two categories: difficulties and facilities of establishing a lactation room, with a predominance of financial difficulties and the lack of physical space. Dialectically, the subjects also recognised the low cost involved, which facilitates establishment. CONCLUSION: Financial, cultural, and political aspects make it difficult to set up lactation rooms, but the importance of this measure was acknowledged. Although the success of breastfeeding partly depends on these support rooms, it also requires multiple actions, especially the effective participation of nurses and other health workers.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to understand the meanings attributed to the organizational context and the role of nurses in care management at emergency care units. This study was based on qualitative research and the Grounded Theory methodological framework. Data were collected from September 2011 to June 2012 by means of semi-structured interviews with 20 participants from two emergency care units (UPA) in southern Brazil, divided into three sample groups. The context is marked by constraints that hinder communication and interaction between professionals and the search of assistance by patients with demands that are not resolved at other levels of care. This scenario highlights the performance of nurses in the managerial dimension of their work, who assume the responsibility for managing care and coordinating professional actions in favour of improved care practices.

RESUMEN

Governance refers to all processes that grant nurses autonomy, control and authority over the nursing practice. The aim of this study was to identify intervening conditions on governance of nursing practice at an obstetrics centre. This is a qualitative study based on the grounded theory method. Data were collected between January and May 2013 by means of semi-structured interviews with 27 participants of a university hospital in southern Brazil, divided into four sampling groups. Data were analysed using open, axial and selective coding. Governance is reinforced by experience and professional autonomy, coordination of the care and management dimension, interpersonal communication, satisfaction and engagement with the profession. It is limited by difficulties with interpersonal relationships, work overload and precarious physical structure of the maternity units. This study provides arguments for the discussion on improvements in healthcare and the professional satisfaction of nurses and nursing teams.

RESUMEN

The aim is to conduct theoretical reflection on the inseparability among public health, planetary health and the nursing process in light of complexity thinking, with the aim of contributing to healthy and sustainable development. Study with a theoretical-reflexive approach that accessed bibliographical sources from contemporary authors who defend the inseparability between public health and planetary health and, at the same time, provide theoretical-systemic support to the nursing process, under an inductive critical bias. The nursing process is conceived as a complex phenomenon, which comprises interdependent dynamics, dialogical approaches, critical-reflective perception and prospective leadership. Theoretical reflection on the nursing process and sustainable development raises an expanded, contextualized and interdependent look at the role of nursing professionals in different health contexts, in order not to compromise well-being and environmental health.

RESUMEN

This qualitative study was performed based on the Social Representations Theory, using a structured approach. The objective was to analyze the social representations of intensive care for professionals who work in mobile intensive care units, given the determination of the central nucleus and the peripheral system. This study included the participation of 73 health care professionals from an Emergency Mobile Care Service. Data collection was performed through free association with the inducing term care for people in a life threatening situation, and analyzed using EVOC software. It is observed that a nucleus is structured in knowledge and responsibility, while contrasting elements present lexicons such as agility, care, stress, and humanization. The representational structure revealed by participants in this study refer particularly to the functionality of intensive care, distinguishing itself by the challenges and encouragements provided to anyone working in this area.

RESUMEN

Organ donation is a complex process that challenges health system professionals and managers. This study aimed to introduce a theoretical model to organize brain-dead patient assistance and the organ donation process guided by the main lean thinking ideas, which enable production improvement through planning cycles and the development of a proper environment for successful implementation. Lean thinking may make the process of organ donation more effective and efficient and may contribute to improvements in information systematization and professional qualifications for excellence of assistance. The model is configured as a reference that is available for validation and implementation by health and nursing professionals and managers in the management of potential organ donors after brain death assistance and subsequent transplantation demands.

RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to identify and characterize types of nursing governance, with emphasis on its impact on nursing practice and health care. This integrative review covered reports published from 2007 to 2011 and indexed in MEDLINE, CINAHL, LILACS, and the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). Keywords used were governance and nursing , which retrieved 25 manuscripts. Most studies were from the United States and the United Kingdom. We identified three models of governance: shared governance, clinical governance, and public governance. The effects of the models identified included quality care improvement, more autonomy for nursing professionals, improved connections among health services, and greater satisfaction among nursing professionals. Additional studies on nursing governance in Latin America are needed to evaluate its applicability in different contexts.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To develop a Web App from a predictive model to estimate the risk of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission for patients with covid-19. METHODS: An applied technological production research was carried out with the development of Streamlit using Python, considering the decision tree model that presented the best performance (AUC 0.668). RESULTS: Based on the variables associated with Precision Nursing, Streamlit stratifies patients admitted to clinical units who are most likely to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, serving as a decision-making support tool for healthcare professionals. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: The performance of the model may have been influenced by the start of vaccination during the data collection period, however, the Web App via Streamlit proved to be a feasible tool for presenting research results, due to the ease of understanding by nurses and its potential for supporting clinical decision-making.

RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to understand the meaning of being a nurse and providing care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of a general hospital in Southern Brazil, developing an explanatory theoretical model. The Grounded Theory and the Complexity Paradigm were used to develop the Theoretical Model: Caring for newborns in the NICU: Dealing with the fragility of living/surviving in the light of complexity. Data was collected from 11 subjects through an open interview, and organized using NVIVO software. A central category was identified: Dealing with the fragility of living/surviving: a care that is highly complex, sensitive, unique and shared. Care in the NICU, valuing the everyday interrelationships, aims to address all domains of complex health care, integrating and applying scientific knowledge. It is necessary to practice the strengths already inherent to nursing professionals, in addition to pursuing new strengths, an invitation to new models of care for newborns, their family, and the members of this complex system.

RESUMEN

The study aimed to understand how patients mean your experience process of living after surgical revascularization. Will be presented in this article, a category and seven subcategories that represent significant changes from that experience, that is, the "consequences" component of the paradigm model, according to Grounded Theory, method of study. Participated in data collection 23 subjects The interviews were semi-structured and took place from October 2010 to August 2011. Significant changes are related to aspects of social and sexual life, work diet physical activity and drug treatment. We conclude that surgical revascularization experience encourages the reflection and the (re) think the lifestyle, it has limitations and difficulties that challenge changes in daily habits of patients and families to live a healthier process.

RESUMEN

We aimed to present the educational booklet as a geronto-technological product for caring for ostomized seniors from a complexity perspective. This was accomplished in the second semester of 2007 in a hospital in the south of Brazil. The data were collected through interviews and presented in the form of an educational booklet. The booklet was validated by ostomized seniors and by a nurse who had been working with these elderly patients. The booklet was presented as a geronto-technology able to help ostomized seniors and their families understand the rights of ostomized people; concepts and types of stomas; care of ostomy; and the importance of the family and the support group for care. In conclusion, the educational booklet is presented as a health promotion tool which makes the health educative process easier.
