RESUMEN

This paper addresses the challenge of significant interference caused by direct sunlight, which adversely affects the orientation accuracy of underwater imaging polarization sensors (IPS). A novel underwater polarization orientation method is proposed based on direct sunlight compensation. Firstly, based on the polarization transmission model at the water-air interface, the interference mechanism of the underwater direct sunlight polarization detection model was analyzed. The underwater IPS detection model based on direct sunlight compensation is constructed, which uses the weight coefficient of underwater direct sunlight to compensate for the interference on the polarization channel and improve the accuracy of underwater polarization detection models. Furthermore, the analytical solution method for the polarization state information of underwater IPS is proposed, employing the augmented Stokes vectors to construct a linear equation for solving the weight coefficients of direct sunlight and improving the computational efficiency. Finally, an underwater polarization orientation experimental platform is established, and both simulation and actual underwater experiments are conducted. Compared with the traditional methods, the proposed method reduces heading error by an average of 92.53% at different solar altitudes.

The bionic polarization sensor (PS)/MEMS inertial measurement unit (MIMU) integrated system can provide reliable attitude and heading information for unmanned vehicles in the case of GNSS rejection. However, the existing measurement methods have poor adaptability to inclining, sheltering, and other harsh environments, and do not make full use of the complementary characteristics of the gyroscopes, accelerometers, and PS, which seriously affects the system performance. Therefore, this paper proposes an attitude and heading measurement method based on an adaptive complementary Kalman filter (ACKF), which corrects the gyroscopes according to the gravity measured by the accelerometers to improve the attitude accuracy and fuses the IMU heading and tilt-compensated polarization heading by Kalman optimal estimation. On this basis, the maximum correlation entropy of the measured gravity and the theoretical gravity is used to construct an adaptive factor to realize the adaptive complementary of the gyroscopes and the accelerometers. Finally, the effectiveness of the method is verified by the outdoor rotation test without occlusion and the vehicle test with occlusion. Compared with the traditional Kalman filter, the pitch, roll, and heading RMSE of the vehicle test are reduced by 89.3%, 93.2% and, 9.6% respectively, which verifies the great advantages.

Experiments were conducted in an UK inter-city train carriage with the aim of evaluating the risk of infection to the SARS-CoV-2 virus via airborne transmission. The experiments included in-service CO2 measurements and the measurement of salt aerosol concentrations released within the carriage. Computational fluid dynamics simulations of the carriage airflow were also used to visualise the airflow patterns, and the efficacy of the HVAC filter material was tested in a laboratory. Assuming an infectious person is present, the risk of infection for a 1-h train journey was estimated to be 6 times lower than for a full day in a well-ventilated office, or 10-12 times lower than a full day in a poorly ventilated office. While the absolute risk for a typical journey is likely low, in the case where a particularly infectious individual is on-board, there is the potential for a number of secondary infections to occur during a 1-h journey. Every effort should therefore be made to minimize the risk of airborne infection within these carriages. Recommendations are also given for the use of CO2 sensors for the evaluation of the risk of airborne transmission on train carriages.

Direct sunlight in complex environmental conditions severely interferes with the light intensity response for imaging Polarization Sensor (PS), leading to a reduction in polarization orientation accuracy. Addressing this issue, this article analyzes the impact mechanism of direct sunlight on polarization sensor detection in a complex environment. The direct sunlight interference factor is introduced into the intensity response model of imaging polarization detection, enhancing the accuracy of the polarization detection model. Furthermore, a polarization state information analytical solution model based on direct sunlight compensation is constructed to improve the accuracy and real-time performance of the polarization state information solution. On this basis, an improved bio-orientation method based on direct sunlight compensation for imaging polarization sensor is proposed. The outdoor dynamic reorientation experiment platform is established to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared with the traditional methods, the experimental results demonstrate a 23% to 47% improvement in the polarization orientation accuracy under various solar zenith angles.

Objective: To examine the impact of tobacco smoking on seminal parameters in men with both primary and secondary infertility. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed 1938 infertile men from China who were categorized as nonsmokers (n=1,067) and smokers (n=871), with the latter group further divided into moderate smokers (1-10 cigarettes per day) (n=568) and heavy smokers (>10 cigarettes per day) (n=303). We assessed semen volume, concentration, total sperm count, progressive motility, and normal morphology following World Health Organization (WHO 2010) guidelines. A logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationships between smoking and seminal parameters while also controlling for lifestyle factors. Results: The analysis demonstrated a statistically significant correlation between smoking and adverse seminal parameters in both primary and secondary infertility patients. Specifically, primary infertile men who smoked had a lower semen concentration, with heavy smokers showing a median sperm concentration of 59.2×10^6/ml compared to 68.6×10^6/ml in nonsmokers (P=0.01). The secondary infertile men who smoked exhibited reduced forward sperm motility, with heavy smokers demonstrating a median progressive motility of 44.7%, which was significantly lower than the 48.1% observed in nonsmokers (P=0.04). Conclusion: Smoking is significantly associated with detrimental effects on seminal parameters in infertile men, thus highlighting the need for cessation programs as part of fertility treatment protocols. Encouraging smoking cessation could substantially improve semen quality and fertility outcomes in this population.

Thin endometrium (TE) is a significant factor contributing to fertility challenges, and addressing this condition remains a central challenge in reproductive medicine. Menstrual blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MenSCs) play a crucial role in tissue repair and regeneration, including that of TE. The Wnt signaling pathway, which is highly conserved and prevalent in eukaryotes, is essential for cell proliferation, tissue development, and reproductive functions. MALAT1 is implicated in various transcriptional and molecular functions, including cell proliferation and metastasis. However, the combined effects of the Wnt signaling pathway and the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) MALAT1 on the regulation of MenSCs' regenerative capabilities in tissue engineering have not yet been explored. To elucidate the regulatory mechanism of MALAT1 in TE, we analyzed its expression levels in normal endometrium and TE tissues, finding that low expression of MALAT1 was associated with poor clinical prognosis. In addition, we conducted both in vitro and in vivo functional assays to examine the role of the MALAT1/miR-7-5p/TCF4 axis in cell proliferation and migration. Techniques such as dual-luciferase reporter assay, fluorescent in situ hybridization, and immunoblot experiments were utilized to clarify the molecular mechanism. To corroborate these findings, we established a TE model and conducted pregnancy experiments, demonstrating a strong association between MALAT1 expression and endometrial fertility. In conclusion, our comprehensive study provides strong evidence supporting that lncRNA MALAT1 modulates TCF4 expression in the Wnt signaling pathway through interaction with miR-7-5p, thus enhancing MenSCs-mediated improvement of TE and improving fertility.

Embryo selection is a key point of in vitro fertilization (IVF). The most commonly used method for embryo selection is morphological assessment. However, it is sometimes inaccurate. Follicular fluid (FF) contains a complex mixture of proteins that are essential for follicle development and oocyte maturation. Analyzing human FF proteomic profiles and identifying predictive biomarkers might be helpful for evaluating embryo quality. A total of 22 human FF samples were collected from 19 infertile women who underwent IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment between October 2021 and November 2021. FFs were grouped into two categories on the basis of the day 3 embryo quality, grade I or II in the hqFF group and grade III in the nhqFF group. FF was analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). The key differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were validated by parallel reaction monitoring (PRM) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Differentially expressed proteins were further analyzed using DAVID software. A total of 558 proteins were identified, of which 50 proteins were differentially expressed in the hqFF versus nhqFF group, including 32 upregulated proteins (> 1.20-fold, P < 0.05) and 18 downregulated proteins (< 0.67-fold, P < 0.05). Bioinformatics analyses showed that the upregulated DEPs were enriched in components of the coagulation and complement systems and negative regulation of peptidase activity, while the downregulated DEPs were enriched in molecular function of extracellular matrix structural and constituent collagen binding. Our results suggested that a number of protein biomarkers in FF were associated with embryo quality. It may help develop an effective and noninvasive method for embryo selection.

Cancer is a heterogeneous disease mainly driven by abnormal gene perturbations in regulatory networks. Therefore, it is appealing to identify the common and specific perturbed genes from multiple cancer networks. We developed an integrative network medicine approach to identify novel biomarkers and investigate drug repurposing across cancer types. We used a network-based method to prioritize genes in cancer-specific networks reconstructed using human transcriptome and interactome data. The prioritized genes show extensive perturbation and strong regulatory interaction with other highly perturbed genes, suggesting their vital contribution to tumorigenesis and tumor progression, and are therefore regarded as cancer genes. The cancer genes detected show remarkable performances in discriminating tumors from normal tissues and predicting survival times of cancer patients. Finally, we developed a network proximity approach to systematically screen drugs and identified dozens of candidates with repurposable potential in several cancer types. Taken together, we demonstrated the power of the network medicine approach to identify novel biomarkers and repurposable drugs in multiple cancer types. We have also made the data and code freely accessible to ensure reproducibility and reusability of the developed computational workflow.

Background and Aims: Leukocytospermia (LCS) is a known cause of male infertility. However, the relationship between seminal leukocytes and semen quality among infertile couples remains controversial. This study aims to investigate the association between semen quality and LCS in male partners of infertile couples. Methods: Semen samples were collected from 512 men who asked for a fertility evaluation in a reproductive center in China. Seminal leukocytes were counted following peroxidase staining with benzidine. Other semen parameters were compared in subfertile men with and without LCS. Results: Poor semen quality (e.g., low semen volume, sperm concentration, and sperm progressive/total motility) was observed among men with LCS compared to those without LCS. Men with LCS had a higher risk of low sperm progressive motility (OR = 0.99, 95% CI = 0.98-0.99, p = 0.02) and total motility (OR = 0.99, 95% CI = 0.98-0.99, p = 0.02), even after adjustment for potential confounders (both OR = 0.99, 95% CI = 0.98-0.99, p = 0.03). Lower sperm viability was observed in LCS from male partners of secondary couples, while no significant difference in semen parameters was found between men with and without LCS in male partners of primary infertile couples. Low sperm motility and viability were associated with LCS in men from secondary infertile couples after adjusting for confounders (OR = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.95-0.99, p = 0.04; OR = 0.94, 95% CI = 0.89-0.99, p = 0.04, respectively). Conclusions: Our findings indicate that a higher risk of abnormal semen parameters was correlated with an increased number of leukocytes in men from secondary infertile couples.
