RESUMEN

Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) to ammonia has been regarded as a promising strategy to balance the global nitrogen cycle. However, it still suffers from poor Faradaic efficiency (FE) and limited yield rate for ammonia production on heterogeneous electrocatalysts, especially in neutral solutions. Herein, we report one-pot synthesis of ultrathin nanosheet-assembled RuFe nanoflowers with low-coordinated Ru sites to enhance NO3RR performances in neutral electrolyte. Significantly, RuFe nanoflowers exhibit outstanding ammonia FE of 92.9% and yield rate of 38.68 mg h-1 mgcat-1 (64.47 mg h-1 mgRu-1) at -0.30 and -0.65 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode), respectively. Experimental studies and theoretical calculations reveal that RuFe nanoflowers with low-coordinated Ru sites are highly electroactive with an increased d-band center to guarantee efficient electron transfer, leading to low energy barriers of nitrate reduction. The demonstration of rechargeable zinc-nitrate batteries with large-specific capacity using RuFe nanoflowers indicates their great potential in next-generation electrochemical energy systems.

Zinc-nitrate batteries can integrate energy supply, ammonia electrosynthesis, and sewage disposal into one electrochemical device. However, current zinc-nitrate batteries still severely suffer from the limited energy density and poor rechargeability. Here, we report the synthesis of tetraphenylporphyrin (tpp)-modified heterophase (amorphous/crystalline) rhodium-copper alloy metallenes (RhCu M-tpp). Using RhCu M-tpp as a bifunctional catalyst for nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) and ethanol oxidation reaction in neutral solution, a highly rechargeable and low-overpotential zinc-nitrate/ethanol battery is successfully constructed, which exhibits outstanding energy density of 117364.6 Wh kg-1cat, superior rate capability, excellent cycling stability of ~400 cycles, and potential ammonium acetate production. Ex/in situ experimental studies and theoretical calculations reveal that there is a molecule-metal relay catalysis in NO3RR over RhCu M-tpp that significantly facilitates the ammonia selectivity and reaction kinetics via a low energy barrier pathway. This work provides an effective design strategy of multifunctional metal-based catalysts toward the high-performance zinc-based hybrid energy systems.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), the most harmful aflatoxins, is a frequent contamination in feed and food items, raising global concerns in animal production and human public health. Also, AFB1 induces oxidative stress, cytotoxicity, mutations, and DNA lesions through its metabolic transformation into aflatoxin B1-8,9-epoxide (AFBO) by cytochrome P450 (CYP450). Hedyotis diffusa (HD) is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine known for its multiple pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory. Yet, the influence of HD on AFB1-induced liver injury in ducks is still unknown. Here, we investigated whether HD positively affects AFB1-induced liver injury in ducks. Results revealed that I) AFB1 caused significant changes in serum biochemical indices and decreased growth performance of ducks (such as ALT, AST, ALP, TP, ALB, final body weight, and body weight gain), whereas HD supplementation at 200 mg/kg mitigated these alterations. II) HD alleviated hepatic histopathological changes and liver index induced by AFB1 in ducks. III) HD significantly attenuated AFB1-induced oxidative stress, as measured by increased antioxidant enzyme activities such as SOD, GPx, and T-AOC and decreased MDA levels. Furthermore, HD reduced the level of AFB1-DNA adduct in duck liver. IV) HD significantly promoted the transcriptional expression of NF-E2-related nuclear factor 2 (Nrf2) and associated genes, including heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1), NAD(P)H dehydrogenase quinone 1 (NQO1), glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic (GCLC). In conclusion, these results demonstrated that HD could activate the Nrf2 pathway in ducks to reduce the hepatotoxicity driven by AFB1. This finding also provides theoretical and data support for a deeper understanding of the toxic mechanisms of AFB1 and its prevention.

In this paper, the propagation properties of ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) in different-thickness composites (i.e., 2, 4 and 9 mm) were critically assessed, and their effectiveness for damage detections and localisations under varying temperatures was demonstrated. A diagnostic film with phased-array lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducers based on the ink-jet printing technique was used in the experiments. Initially, the dispersion curves for these composites were compared. Next, the effects of the composite thickness on the A0 and S0 mode amplitudes and the group velocity were investigated by active sensing. Next, the behaviours of UGWs under varying temperatures in different-thickness plates were also investigated. Finally, surface-mounted artificial damage and impact damage were detected and located in different composites.

An effective approach for an embedded piezo diagnostic layer into thick composite material is presented. The effectiveness of the approach is assessed in comparison to the surface-mounted layer. The proposed manufacturing alleviates difficulties associated with trimming edges of composites when embedding wires. The Electro-Mechanical Impedance technique is used to access the integrity of the piezoelectric sensors bonding process. Comparisons of ultrasonic guided waves are made between embedded and surface-mounted diagnostic layers and their penetration through and across the thickness of the composites. Temperature influences with the range from -40 °C up to 80 °C on embedded and surface-mounted guided waves are investigated. An investigation is carried out into the relationship between amplitude and time-of-flight with temperature at different excitation frequencies. The temperature has significant but different effects on amplitude and phase-shift of guided waves for the embedded layer compared to the surface-mounted layer. A Laser Doppler Vibrometer is used to identify the blue tack and impact damage. Both embedded and surface-mounted layers are shown to be an effective means of generating detectable wave scatter from damage.

In light of ongoing research elucidating the intricacies of obesity and metabolic syndrome, the role of abdominal fat (especially visceral fat) has been particularly prominent. Studies have revealed that visceral adipose tissue can accelerate the development of metabolic syndrome by releasing various bioactive compounds and hormones, such as lipocalin, leptin and interleukin. A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 167 patients with obesity. Among them, 105 patients who satisfied predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria were included. The parameters evaluated included total abdominal fat area (TAFA), laboratory indicators and anthropometric measurements. Weight reduction was quantified through percent total weight loss (%TWL) and percent excess weight loss (%EWL) postoperatively. Binary logistic regression analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis were employed to identify predictors of weight loss. Binary logistic regression analysis emphasized that total abdominal fat area was an independent predictor of %EWL ≥75% (p < 0.001). Total abdominal fat area (p = 0.033) and BMI (p = 0.003) were independent predictors of %TWL ≥30%. In our cohort, %TWL ≥30% at 1 year after surgery was closely related to the abdominal fat area and BMI. Based on these results, we formulated a novel model based on these factors, exhibiting superior predictive value for excellent weight loss.

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is manifested by sensorimotor impairments in the sprained ankle, including deficits in sensation, motor function, and central integration or processing. These impairments have a significant impact on physical activities and daily life. Recently, some studies have suggested that bilateral deficits were observed in unilateral CAI, but contradictory evidence disputes this finding. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate whether bilateral sensorimotor deficits presented in individuals with unilateral CAI. METHODS: Without language restriction, the following databases were retrieved from database inception up until 3 November 2023, including PubMed, WOS, EMBASE, Cochrane, SPORTDiscus and CINAHL. Case-control and cross-sectional studies that investigated bilateral sensorimotor functions in individuals with unilateral CAI were included. Sensorimotor functions contained static and dynamic balance, functional performance, muscle strength and activation, as well as sensation. Outcome measures contained centre-of-pressure parameters, normalised reach distance, activation time and magnitude of muscle, sensory errors and threshold. The risk of bias and quality assessment of included studies were evaluated using a standardised tool recommended by the Cochrane Collaboration and the Epidemiological Appraisal Instrument, respectively. To explore the potential bilateral deficits associated with unilateral CAI, a comprehensive meta-analysis was conducted using Review Manager version 5.4. The analysis compared the injured limb of unilateral CAI with healthy controls and the uninjured limb with healthy controls. The main focus of this study was to investigate the differences between the uninjured limb and healthy controls. A random-effects model was employed and effect sizes were estimated using the standardised mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Effect sizes were deemed as weak (0.2-0.5), moderate (0.5-0.8), or large (> 0.8). RESULTS: A total of 11,442 studies were found; 30 studies were contained in the systematic review and 20 studies were included in the meta-analysis. Compared with healthy controls, those with unilateral CAI presented weak to moderate impairments in their uninjured limbs in static balance with eyes open (SMD = 0.32, 95% CI: 0.08 to 0.56), functional performance (SMD = 0.37; 95% CI: 0.08 to 0.67), kinesthesia (SMD = 0.52; 95% CI: 0.09 to 0.95) and tibialis anterior activation (SMD = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.19 to 1.01). There were no significant differences in other comparisons between the uninjured limb and healthy controls. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with unilateral CAI may present bilateral deficits in static balance with eyes open, functional performance and kinaesthesia. However, further evidence is required to confirm this point due to limited studies included in some analyses and small effect size. REGISTRATION: The protocol was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews platform (CRD: 42,022,375,855).

PURPOSE: To establish a nomogram for predicting the overall survival (OS) in patients with gastric cancer (GC) based on inflammatory, nutritional and pathological factors. METHODS: GC patients underwent curative gastrectomy from January 2012 to June 2017 in our hospital were included, and were classified into training set and validation set with a ratio of 7:3. Then variables associated with OS were analyzed using univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis. Nomograms predicting OS were built using variables from multivariable Cox models. Finally, Kaplan-Meier curve and Log-rank test were also conducted to analyze the 1-yr, 3-yr and 5-yr OS to validate the efficiency of risk stratification of the nomogram. RESULTS: A total of 366 GC patients were included. After univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis, age (HR = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.01-2.30, P = 0.044), CA50 (HR = 1.90, 95% CI = 1.12-3.21, P = 0.017), PNI (HR = 1.65, 95% CI = 1.13-2.39, P = 0.009), SII (HR = 1.46, 95% CI = 1.03-2.08, P = 0.036), T stage (HR = 2.26, 95% CI = 1.01-5.05, P = 0.048; HR = 7.24, 95% CI = 3.64-14.40, P < 0.001) were independent influencing factors on the survival time of GC patients. Five factors including CEA, prognostic nutritional index (PNI), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), ln (tumor size), T stage, and N stage were identified and entered the nomogram, which showed good discrimination and calibration in both sets. On internal validation, 1-yr, 3-yr and 5-yr nomogram demonstrated a good discrimination with an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.77, 0.84 and 0.86, respectively. The AUC for 1-yr, 3-yr and 5-yr nomogram in validation set was 0.77, 0.79 and 0.81, respectively. The OS in low risk group of training cohort and validation cohort was significantly higher than that of intermediate risk group and high risk group, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: We established a nomogram based on PNI, SII and pathological factors for predicting OS in GC patients. In addition, its efficiency was validated by validation set and stratified analysis.

As an important marine aquaculture species, the mud crab (Scylla paramamosain) is a good candidate for studying the osmoregulatory mechanism of crustaceans. While previous studies have focused on the osmoregulatory function of the gills, this study aims to explore the osmoregulatory function of the antennal glands. By the comparative transcriptomic analysis, we found the pathways of ion regulation including "proximal tubule bicarbonate reclamation" and "mineral absorption" were activated in the antennal glands of the crabs long-term dwelling in low salinity. The enhanced ionic reabsorption was associated with up-regulated ion transport genes such as NKA, CA-c, VPA, and NHE, and with energy metabolism genes such as MDH, SLC25, and PEPCK. The upregulation of NKA and CA-c was also verified by the increased enzyme activity. The lowered osmolality and ion concentration of the hemolymph and the enlarged labyrinth lumen and hemolymph capillary inside the antennal glands indicated the infiltration of external water and the responsively increase of urine excretion, which explained the requirement of enhanced ionic reabsorption. To further confirm these findings, we examined the change of gene expression, enzyme activity, internal ion concentration, and external ion concentration during a 96 h low salinity challenge with seven intervals. The results were basically consistent with the results as shown in the long-term low salinity adaptation. The present study provides valuable information on the osmoregulatory function of the antennal glands of S. paramamosain. The implication of this study in marine aquaculture is that it provides valuable information on the osmoregulatory mechanism of mud crabs, which can be used to improve their culture conditions and enhance their tolerance to salinity stress. The identified genes and pathways involved in osmoregulation can also be potential targets for genetic selection and breeding programs to develop more resilient mud crab strains for aquaculture.

Feminization-1c (Fem-1c) is important for sex differentiation in the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans. In our previous study, the basic molecular characteristics of the Fem-1c gene (EsFem-1c) in Eriocheir sinensis (Henri Milne Edwards, 1854) were cloned to determine the relationship with sex differentiation. In this study, the genomic sequence of EsFem-1c contained five exons and four introns, with an exceptionally long 3'UTR sequence. The qRT-PCR results of EsFem-1c demonstrated lower tissue expression in the androgenic gland of the intersex crab than the normal male crab, implying that EsFem-1c plays a role in crab AG development. RNA interference experiments and morphological observations of juvenile and mature crabs indicated that EsFem-1c influences sexual development in E. sinensis. A dual-luciferase reporter assay disclosed that tcf-miR-315-5p effectively inhibits the translation of the EsFem-1c gene, influencing male development. An intriguing finding was that miRNA tcf-miR-307 could increase EsFem-1c expression by binding to the alternative splicing region with a length of 248 bp (ASR-248) in the 3'UTR sequence. The present research contributes to a better understanding of the molecular regulation mechanism of EsFem-1c and provides a resource for future studies of the miRNA-mediated regulation of sexual development and regulation in E. sinensis.

BACKGROUND: Conventional laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (CLSG) has been conducted in multiple centers for treating morbid obesity, however, there are no standard criteria for (1) placing the trocar; and (2) how many trocars should be used. Single-incision laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SLSG), a newly emerged technique in 2008, has been proposed as an alternative to CLSG in recent years, however, there is no definite evidence for this. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed using the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy cases from January 2006 to October 2022. We then summarized the trocar numbers and placement patterns among these studies. A meta-analysis was conducted to compare the difference between SLSG and CLSG in the perioperative and postoperative indices. RESULTS: A total of 61 studies involving 20 180 patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for treating morbid obesity were included in the systematic review, including 11 on SLSG, 35 on CLSG, and 15 studies comparing SLSG and CLSG. A systematic review showed that the trocar number varied in different CLSG studies, mainly using four or five trocars. The trocars were mainly placed in position, presenting an inverted trapezoid pattern and a left-predominant pattern. Meta-analysis showed that the operative time in the SLSG was significantly higher than that in the CLSG, and the pain Visual Analog Scale rating on postoperative day 1 in the CLSG was significantly higher than in the SLSG. There were no statistical significances in the other complications or surgical efficiency. CONCLUSIONS: In the CLSG, the majority of the trocars were arranged in an inverted trapezoid pattern and were of the left-predominant type. Although SLSG is a feasible technique in selected patients, there is insufficient evidence to recommend its widespread use compared with CLSG. High-quality randomized controlled trials with large study populations and long follow-up periods will be required in the future.

Background: Immune cells are tightly bound up with the pathogenesis of asthma. Besides T cells, B cells, macrophages, and mast cells, the mechanism of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) in asthma is gradually explicit. As a kind of traditional Chinese medicine, Majie cataplasm realizes its potential in the clinical setting as an adjuvant for asthma. In our previous experiments, Majie cataplasm inhibits the increasing Th1 and Th2 in allergic asthma inflammation and reshapes a balance between Th1 and Th2. As ILCs are the reflection of Th cells in lung tissues, we will figure out whether Majie cataplasm could have similar effects on ILCs or not. Methods: A total of 40 female C57/BL6 mice were randomly divided into the control group (n = 10), the asthma model group (n = 10), the dexamethasone group (n = 10), and the Majie cataplasm group (n = 10). Except for the control group, mice were sensitized with ovalbumin (OVA) and excited to establish mice models of asthma. Lung tissue and splenic tissue were collected at 24 h after the last challenge with OVA, and the cell suspension of the lungs and spleen was prepared. The number of ILC1s, ILC2s, ILC3s, and NKs cells in the lungs and Tregs and B10s in the spleen were detected by flow cytometry (FCM). This was followed by simultaneous quantitative detection of 40 inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in the lung by a protein microarray. Results: The dexamethasone and Majie cataplasm could restore the number of ILC1s, ILC2s, and ILC3s in lung tissue. Compared with the control group, these cells remained unchanged in the asthma model group, while ILC1s (P < 0.001, P < 0.01), ILC2s (P < 0.001, P < 0.01), and ILC3s (P < 0.01, P < 0.05) were restored after the intervention of dexamethasone and Majie cataplasm. The number of NKs was low among the control group, the asthma model group, and the dexamethasone group, while the number of NKs rocketed in the Majie cataplasm group (P < 0.0001). For splenic Tregs and B10s, Majie cataplasm could curb the increasing numbers of them in the asthma model group (P < 0.0001, P < 0.01), while only Tregs were suppressed by the dexamethasone (P < 0.0001). For the inflammatory cytokines in the lung, the contents of TNF-α, TNFR2, CXCL-9, CCL-12, CCL-9, CCL-2, and CCL-5 in the asthma model group were higher than those in the control group, while the contents of GM-CSF and IL-1α were decreased. Comparing the asthma model group to the dexamethasone group, the levels of G-CSF, CCL-9, CCL-5, and TNFR2 in the former group were higher. The levels of TNF-α, TNFR2, and CCL-9 in the asthma model group increase, while the levels of IFN-γ, IL-1α, ICAM-1, and IL-4 increased in the Majie cataplasm group, especially IFN-γ and IL-1α. Conclusion: Both the dexamethasone and Majie cataplasm could control the asthmatic inflammation by reducing the inflammatory factors, inhibiting the adaptive inflammation reaction in the latter stage of inflammation and furtherly reversing the inhibition of ILC2s, ILC2s, and ILC3s. In addition, Majie cataplasm can promote the quantity of NKs and the content of IL-1α and IFN-γ, induce IFN-γ +NKs to shut down the Th2 response, and tend to elicit the Th1 response.

To clarify the hormone control on sex determination and differentiation, we studied the Chinese mitten crab, Eriocheir sinensis (Henri Milne Edwards, 1854), a species with importantly economic and ecological significance. The crustacean female sex hormone (CFSH) and the insulin-like androgenic gland hormone (IAG) have been found to be related to the sex determination and/or differentiation. CFSH-1 of E. sinensis (EsCFSH-1) encoded a 227 amino-acid protein including a signal peptide, a CFSH-precursor-related peptide, and a mature CFSH peptide. Normally, EsCFSH-1 was highly expressed in the eyestalk ganglion of adult female crabs, while the expression was declined in the intersex crabs (genetic females). The intersex crabs had the androgenic glands, and the expression level of EsIAG was close to that of male crabs. During the embryogenesis and larval development, the changes of EsCFSH-1 and EsIAG genes expression in male and female individuals were shown after the zoea IV stage. Next, we confirmed the existence of the regulatory feedback loop between EsCFSH-1 and EsIAG by RNA interference experiment. The feminization function of EsCFSH-1 was further verified by examining the morphological change of external reproductive organs after EsCFSH-1 knockdown. The findings of this study reveal that the regulatory interplay between CFSH and IAG might play a pivotal role in the process of sex determination and/or differentiation in decapod crustaceans.

Active sensing using ultrasonic guided waves (UGW) is widely investigated for monitoring possible damages in composite structures. Recently, a novel diagnosed film based on a circuit-printed technique with piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducers has been developed. The diagnostic film is a replacement for the traditional cable connection to PZT sensors and has been shown to significantly reduce the weight of the host structure. In this work, the diagnosed films were embedded into composite structures during manufacturing using a novel edge cut-out method during lay-up, which allowed for edge trimming after curing. In this paper, the effect of fatigue loading on the integrity of PZT transducers is initially investigated. The electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) properties at different fatigue loading cycles were used as the diagnostic measure for the performance of the sensors. At the same time, the behaviours of UGW were investigated at different fatigue loading cycles. It was found that the EMI properties and active sensing behaviours remained stable up to 1 million cycles for the force ranges of 0.5~5 kN and 1~10 kN. Next, the effect of embedding the diagnosed film on the mechanical properties of the host composite structure was investigated. Tensile and compressive tests were conducted and the elastic modulus of composite coupons with and without embedded PZT diagnosed films were compared. The elastic modulus of composite coupons with PZT diagnosed films embedded across the entire coupon reduced by as much as 20% for tensile tests and just over 10% for compressive tests compared to the coupons without embedded sensors. These reductions are considered the worst-case scenario, as in real structures the film would only be embedded in a relatively small area of the structure.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the targets and mechanisms of action of Qingkailing injection (,QKL) in the treatment of cholestatic hepatitis. METHODS: A network pharmacology method was implemented using drug and disease databases to target QKL and cholestasis hepatitis, respectively. The functional protein association network STRING database was used to construct a protein-protein interaction network using R language and the Bioconductor toolkit. The org.Hs.eg.db and clusterProfiler packages were used for gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis, which explored biological functions and pathways of potential targets. Targets were then visualized using Cytoscape 3.6.0 software. RESULTS: We screened 121 compounds in QKL and identified 112 targets for the treatment of cholestatic hepatitis. QKL played a role in the treatment of cholestatic hepatitis through 305 biology process terms, 15 cellular component and 29 molecular function terms. The mechanism of QKL action was mainly related to tumor necrosis factor, mitogen-activated protein kinase, and PI3K-Akt signaling pathways. CONCLUSION: The treatment of cholestatic hepatitis by QKL involved multiple targets, biological functions, and signaling pathways that are closely associated with the disease.

Wound dressings can accelerate wound healing. The degradable polymer poly(lactic acid) (PLA) shows good mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Sodium alginate (SA) holds good biocompatibility, hemostasis, and high hygroscopicity. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) has good spinnability as a pharmaceutical excipient. Herein, we carried out a comparison study of electrospun PLA and PLA/PVA/SA fiber membranes for wound healing in vitro and in vivo. In this study, PLA and PLA/PVA/SA nanofiber membranes were fabricated through electrospinning to produce a highly porous and large specific surface area that could promote wound healing. In vitro experiments showed that PLA and PLA/PVA/SA nanofiber membranes could all provide good support for the growth of rat fibroblasts (L929). Moreover, rat fibroblasts displayed slightly better adhesion and proliferation on PLA/PVA/SA than on the PLA fiber membranes. The in vivo potentiality of the PLA and PLA/PVA/SA fiber membranes was assessed in rat models of skin defects in which the PLA and PLA/PVA/SA fiber membranes significantly improved wound healing compared to commercially available gauzes. No significant differences in wound healing were observed between PLA and PLA/PVA/SA fiber membranes in our study. Furthermore, Masson staining and PCR displayed the PLA fiber membrane promoted protein deposition compared to the PLA/PVA/SA fiber membrane. In addition, IHC suggested that PLA/PVA/SA dressing reduced the inflammatory response during early wound healing compared to the PLA fiber membrane. These findings highlight the utility of fiber membranes as novel wound-healing dressings.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has become one of the most serious global epidemics in the 21st Century. This study aims to explore the distribution of research capabilities of countries, institutions, and researchers, and the hotspots and frontiers of coronavirus research in the past two decades. In it, references for funding support of urgent projects and international cooperation among research institutions are provided. METHOD: the Web of Science core collection database was used to retrieve the documents related to coronavirus published from 2003 to 2020. Citespace.5.6.R2, VOSviewer1.6.12, and Excel 2016 were used for bibliometric analysis. RESULTS: 11,036 documents were retrieved, of which China and the United States have contributed the most coronavirus studies, Hong Kong University being the top contributor. Regarding journals, the JournalofVirology has contributed the most, while in terms of researchers, Yuen Kwok Yung has made the most contributions. The proportion of documents published by international cooperation has been rising for decades. Vaccines for SARS-CoV-2 are under development, and clinical trials of several drugs are ongoing. CONCLUSIONS: international cooperation is an important way to accelerate research progress and achieve success. Developing corresponding vaccines and drugs are the current hotspots and research directions.

Inferior larval production rates of domesticated Penaeus monodon broodstock has been a major hurdle to the expansion of its aquaculture, so that a better understanding of basic male reproductive biology is critical to improve the reproductive performance of this commercially important penaeid species. Following our previous study of spermatogenesis in the species, this study explored the mechanism of spermatophore formation with regards to the contribution of the reproductive tract epithelium by light and transmission electron microscopy. Four types of epithelial secretions (S1-4) were observed contributing to the three layers of the spermatophore. The primary layer of spermatophore was composed of S1 and S2, which were released from the secretory epithelial cells of the proximal vas deferens (PVD) and the secretory epithelial cells of the sperm-bearing lumen of the mid vas deferens, respectively. The secondary layer of the spermatophore was composed of S3, the secretory product of epithelial cells in the accessory tubule lumen of the mid vas deferens. The outer layer of the spermatophore was formed from S4 which was secreted by the epithelial cells in the posterior mid vas deferens and the terminal ampulla. Unique folds of the vas deferens epithelium appeared to play an important role in the formation of the spermatophore, particularly in the formation of the laminated structure of the spermatophore appendage. With respect to acrosome maturation along the reproductive tract, most spermatozoa did not have a fully developed anterior spike and a subacrosomal region when in the PVD, whereas both structures were fully formed by the time the spermatozoa reached the mid vas deferens and increased electron density when in the terminal ampulla; this observation represents the first morphological evidence of post-testicular acrosome maturation in this taxon.

Although artificial insemination has been used for decades in Penaeus monodon aquaculture, the interaction of male and female external genitalia during spermatophore transfer has not been fully documented. As a result, studying the functional anatomy of this process may help to better refine the insemination technique. The sexual act in penaeoid prawns is virtually impossible to observe directly; as a result, this study aimed to describe the functional anatomy and interaction of external genitalia, such as the petasma, appendices masculinae and genital papillae of the male, with that of the thelycum and genital lobes of the female, using a combination of micro-computed tomography and scanning electron microscopy. We hypothesise that the spermatophores are ejaculated into the ventromedial groove of the petasma and squeezed by abdominal flexure into the spermathecae of female's thelycum. During this process, the 'spike-like' setae observed on the petasma and appendices masculinae are speculated to control the transferring direction of the spermatophores. The approach of three dimensional remodelling and animation reported in this study may prove useful in the examination of further hypotheses related to the functional anatomy of external genitalia and/or appendages for other crustacean species.
