RESUMEN

The impact of Sacculina carcini infection on the nutritional status of the shore crab Carcinus maenas was investigated in the western Dutch Wadden Sea for a period of 20 months. About 3.3% of the population was sacculinized, i.e. externally infected with S. carcini and only 0.7% presented scars of previous infection. The results of mixed linear models showed that sacculinized and non-sacculinized crabs had similar morphometric condition, while the energy density of parasitized crabs (externa excluded) was significantly reduced by about 4.3% overall, and by up to 5.8% in crabs under 40 mm carapace width. However, when Sacculina externa was included in the energy determinations, the difference in energy density decreased to 1.2%, while total energy content of the pair infected crab-parasite including externa was 30.8% higher than non-sacculinized crabs of similar size. The total energy content of ovigerous females (eggs included) was even higher, near doubling the energy of similar-sized crabs. The same way, total energy content of Sacculina externa was about 4 times lower than total energy of egg mass. The results suggest that the rhizocephalan parasite is efficient in consuming the energy that the host may allocate for growth and maintenance, but require future studies to disentangle the impact of the degree of internal infection and the implications for the dynamics of the population.

RESUMEN

The impact of barnacle epibionts on the condition of the shore crab Carcinus maenas was studied for the western Wadden Sea population. Approximately 39% of the crabs were fouled with the barnacle Balanus crenatus. Although the morphological Fulton's K condition decreased by 5.8% in fouled crabs, Linear Mixed-Effects Models (LMM) showed that only the energetic condition of the crabs was significantly affected by fouling. The energy density of fouled crabs was consistently poorer (4.1% in AFDW; 8.7% in dry weight) than that of non-fouled crabs, especially in females and green forms in dry weight (12.8% and 11.4% reduction, respectively). Cumulative infection with Sacculina carcini, detected in 4.5% of the fouled crabs, additionally reduced by 14.3% the energy density in dry weight and almost to half of the total energy of the fouled crabs. Impacts of energy density reduction on crabs' growth and reproduction are discussed.

RESUMEN

The variety of H bond (HB) interactions is a source of inspiration for bottom-up molecular engineering through self-aggregation. Non-conventional intermolecular HBs between N,N'-disubstituted urea and thiourea are studied in detail by vibrational spectroscopies and ab initio calculations. Raman and IR mode assignments are given. We show that it is possible to study selectively the different intermolecular bifurcated intra- and inter-dimer HBs with the two types of HB acceptors. Through the ab initio calculation, the thioamide I mode, a specific marker of N-HS[double bond, length as m-dash]C HB interactions, is unambiguously identified.

RESUMEN

This manuscript reports the synthesis and characterization of the first organic-inorganic hybrid material exhibiting efficient multimodal spectral converting properties. The nanocomposite, made of Er(3+), Yb(3+) codoped zirconia nanoparticles (NPs) entrapped in a di-ureasil d-U(600) hybrid matrix, is prepared by an easy two-step sol-gel synthesis leading to homogeneous and transparent materials that can be very easily processed as monolith or film. Extensive structural characterization reveals that zirconia nanocrystals of 10-20 nm in size are efficiently dispersed into the hybrid matrix and that the local structure of the di-ureasil is not affected by the presence of the NPs. A significant enhancement in the refractive index of the di-ureasil matrix with the incorporation of the ZrO2 nanocrystals is observed. The optical study demonstrates that luminescent properties of both constituents are perfectly preserved in the final hybrid. Thus, the material displays a white-light photoluminescence from the di-ureasil component upon excitation at UV/visible radiation and also intense green and red emissions from the Er(3+)- and Yb(3+)-doped NPs after NIR excitation. The dynamics of the optical processes were also studied as a function of the lanthanide content and the thickness of the films. Our results indicate that these luminescent hybrids represent a low-cost, environmentally friendly, size-controlled, easily processed and chemically stable alternative material to be used in light harvesting devices such as luminescent solar concentrators, optical fibres and sensors. Furthermore, this synthetic approach can be extended to a wide variety of luminescent NPs entrapped in hybrid matrices, thus leading to multifunctional and versatile materials for efficient tuneable nonlinear optical nanodevices.

RESUMEN

This comprehensive scientific review evaluates the effectiveness of nature-based solutions (NBS) in reducing antibiotics (ABs), combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and controlling pathogens in various aquatic environments at different river catchment levels. It covers conventional and innovative treatment wetland configurations for wastewater treatment to reduce pollutant discharge into the aquatic ecosystems as well as exploring how river restoration and saltmarshes can enhance pollutant removal. Through the analysis of experimental studies and case examples, the review shows NBS's potential for providing sustainable and cost-effective solutions to improve the health of aquatic ecosystems. It also evaluates the use of diagnostic indicators to predict NBS effectiveness in removing specific pollutants such as ABs and AMR. The review concludes that NBS are feasible for addressing the new challenges stemming from human activities such as the presence of ABs, AMR and pathogens, contributing to a better understanding of NBS, highlighting success stories, addressing knowledge gaps, and providing recommendations for future research and implementation.

RESUMEN

Fishes are one of the most important components of the oceans and are exposed to several anthropogenic pressures, namely microplastic (MP), contaminants that are now ubiquitous worldwide. Taking advantage of the 2020 Circumnavigation Expedition carried by the NRP Sagres tall ship of the Portuguese Navy, fish samples from the southern Atlantic ocean were collected to evaluate possible MP contamination. In a total of 14 weeks of campaign, seven large migratory fishes of commercial interest were collected across the middle Atlantic Ocean and along the South American Atlantic coast. All individuals were contaminated with MPs, with an average of 18 ± 11 MPs/fish. In all fish sampled, both the gastrointestinal tract and gills presented MPs, indicating different contamination pathways including via their preys and from surrounding water, respectively. A total of 124 MPs were observed, where 72 % were fibers and 28 % particles, mostly of blue color (85 %), and with rayon and nylon as the most abundant polymers. This study is an important contribution to increase the scientific knowledge of MP contamination in mesopelagic fishes used for human consumption and collected in the open waters, reinforcing the need for further research regarding MP contamination in top predatory species from high trophic levels.

RESUMEN

Seagrass meadows provide several ecological functions that improve the overall ecological health of coastal systems and therefore, it is urgent to promote the restoration of such habitats. In Ria de Aveiro, a coastal lagoon in the Atlantic Coast of Portugal, a restoration initiative was responsible for transplanting the dwarf eelgrass Zostera noltei into a highly degraded area. This eelgrass was used as a nature-based solution (NbS) to mitigate some of the impacts of historical mercury contamination. Comparisons of key-species features (density and biomass), and some community-derived indicators (total density and biomass, species richness and Shannon-Wiener index) between the transplanted seagrass patch, their bare vicinities, and their counterpart habitats on the source area, provided signs of the effectiveness of the restoration action on the benthic communities' recovery. Indicators were higher within the restored meadow, and biomass derived indicators of the restored meadow were similar to the source meadow.

RESUMEN

Stable, cost-effective, brightly luminescent, and metal-free organosilica nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared using the Stöber method without any thermal treatment above 318 K. The white-light photoluminescence results from a convolution of the emission originated in the NH(2) groups of the organosilane and oxygen defects in the silica network. The time-resolved emission spectra are red-shifted, relative to those acquired in the steady-state regime, pointing out that the NPs emission is governed by donor-acceptor (D-A) recombination mechanisms. Moreover, the increase of the corresponding lifetime values with the monitored wavelength further supports that the emission is governed by a recombination mechanism typical of a D-A pair attributed to an exceptionally broad inhomogeneous distribution of the emitting centers peculiar to silica-based NPs. These NPs exhibit the highest emission quantum yield value (0.15 ± 0.02) reported so far for organosilica biolabels without activator metals. Moreover, the emission spectra and the quantum yield values are quite stable over time showing no significant aging effects after exposure to the ambient environment for more than 1 year, stressing the potential of these NPs as metal-free biolabels.

RESUMEN

Predator-prey interactions are a primary structuring force vital to the resilience of marine communities and sustainability of the world's oceans. Human influences on marine ecosystems mediate changes in species interactions. This generality is evinced by the cascading effects of overharvesting top predators on the structure and function of marine ecosystems. It follows that ecological forecasting, ecosystem management, and marine spatial planning require a better understanding of food web relationships. Characterising and scaling predator-prey interactions for use in tactical and strategic tools (i.e. multi-species management and ecosystem models) are paramount in this effort. Here, we explore what issues are involved and must be considered to advance the use of predator-prey theory in the context of marine fisheries science. We address pertinent contemporary ecological issues including (1) the approaches and complexities of evaluating predator responses in marine systems; (2) the 'scaling up' of predator-prey interactions to the population, community, and ecosystem level; (3) the role of predator-prey theory in contemporary fisheries and ecosystem modelling approaches; and (4) directions for the future. Our intent is to point out needed research directions that will improve our understanding of predator-prey interactions in the context of the sustainable marine fisheries and ecosystem management.

RESUMEN

Mass drug administration (MDA) is the main counter-transmission strategy of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis. In endemic countries, there are areas where MDA is not required. However, there is no standard approach in these areas, and studies are important to evaluate the epidemiological status. This study aimed to investigate lymphatic filariasis and strategies developed for its control in an area where MDA is not required. Together with the 2018 morbidity evaluation, a survey was conducted using point-of-care immunochromatographic test-AD12 tests for diagnostic screening in an area where MDA is not required. The methodology also included desk research based on Health Department reports of the control activities for lymphatic filariasis during 2003-2016. Among the 934 cases investigated in 2018, there was a 0.64% prevalence of circulating filarial antigen positive, comprising five adults and one 2-year-old child. Six patients aged 39-63 years had filarial disease. Fourteen surveys have already been conducted as control activities, and since 2009, there have been no positive cases. This study showed that the prevalence of antigenemia decreased from 2.97% in 2003 to 0.64% in 2018. Moreover, the transmission of filariasis infection was under control in this area. Our study provides insights into the surveillance phase by identifying areas of low transmission and where MDA is not required. Although we have not identified cases of filarial infection, there is a need to provide services that will provide assist those already affected with morbidity and help reduce and prevent disability.

RESUMEN

The sol-gel preparation of a bridged silsesquioxane containing europium(III) salts and 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone has been achieved from a new ethane tetracarboxamide-based organosilane. Free-standing films with thicknesses up to 440 µm and maximum absolute quantum yield (q) of 0.34 ± 0.03 (excitation at 320 nm) were prepared by the drop cast method, while thin films (∼200-400 nm) spin-coated on glass substrates led to highly luminescent coatings with q = 0.60 ± 0.02 (excitation at 345 nm). The thin films were tested as planar luminescent solar concentrators and the optimized device displays an optical conversion efficiency of 12.3% in the absorbing spectral region of the active layer (300-380 nm).

RESUMEN

White light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are candidates to revolutionize the lighting industry towards energy efficient and environmental friendly lighting and displays. The current challenges in WLEDs encompass high luminous efficiency, chromatic stability, high colour-rending index and price competitiveness. Recently, the development of efficient and low-cost downconverting photoluminescent phosphors for ultraviolet/blue to white light conversion was highly investigated. Here we report a simple route to design high-efficient WLEDs by combining a commercial ultraviolet LED chip (InGaAsN, 390 nm) and boehmite (γ-AlOOH) hybrid nanoplates. Unusually high quantum yields (ηyield=38-58%) result from a synergic energy transfer between the boehmite-related states and the triplet states of the benzoate ligands bound to the surface of the nanoplates. The nanoplates with ηyield=38% are able to emit white light with Commission International de l'Eclairage coordinates, colour-rendering index and correlated colour temperature values of (0.32, 0.33), 85.5 and 6,111 K, respectively; overwhelming state-of-the-art single-phase ultraviolet-pumped WLEDs phosphors.

AU

The reexpansion pulmonary edema (RPE) is a rare clinical condition, but often lethal. It is a secondary complication to the rapid re-expansion of the lung collapsed as a result of a pneumothorax or pleural effusion of large volume. The fundamental importance for prevention are knowledge of the pathogenesis and executing proper technique on pleural drainage and thoracentesis. Its pathogenesis is multifactorial. Its prevention is still based on slow pleuralemptying procedures, without standards to avoid RPEevolution. The oximetry monitoring and administration of oxygen are needed for treatment. AU

RESUMEN

The epibenthic community of the Minho Estuary was studied during the summer of 2006. Diversity was generally low and a total of 14 fish and five crustacean taxa were identified. Multivariate analysis revealed two site clusters (A and B). Water conductivity and percentage of fine sand were the abiotic variables that most contributed to the spatial distinction between clusters. The species contributing the most to the average similarity within Cluster A were Crangon crangon and Pomatoschistus microps, while in Cluster B was Atyaephyra desmarestii. Possible factors responsible for the low diversity of the epibenthic community in Minho Estuary were the low macrozoobenthic abundance and diversity, and the high abiotic oscillations between tides (mainly salinity) acting on the ecosystem.

RESUMEN

Temperature tolerance and sensitivity were examined for some North Atlantic marine species and linked to their energetics in terms of species-specific parameters described by dynamic energy budget (DEB) theory. There was a general lack of basic information on temperature tolerance and sensitivity for many species. Available data indicated that the ranges in tolerable temperatures were positively related to optimal growth temperatures. However, no clear relationships with temperature sensitivity were established and no clear differences between pelagic and demersal species were observed. The analysis was complicated by the fact that for pelagic species, experimental data were completely absent and even for well-studied species, information was incomplete and sometimes contradictory. Nevertheless, differences in life-history strategies were clearly reflected in parameter differences between related species. Two approaches were used in the estimation of DEB parameters: one based on the assumption that reserve hardly contributes to physical volume; the other does not make this assumption, but relies on body-size scaling relationships, using parameter values of a generalized animal as pseudo-data. Temperature tolerance and sensitivity seemed to be linked with the energetics of a species. In terms of growth, relatively high temperature optima, sensitivity and/or tolerance were related to lower relative assimilation rates as well as lower maintenance costs. Making the step from limited observations to underlying mechanisms is complicated and extrapolations should be carefully interpreted. Special attention should be devoted to the estimation of parameters using body-size scaling relationships predicted by the DEB theory.

RESUMEN

Pelger-Huët anomaly is an inherited condition characterized by hyposegmentation of the neutrophil nucleus and excessive chromatin clumping. Acquired Pelger-Huët, also known as pseudo-Pelger-Huët, has been described in several clinical conditions including transplant recipients who received immunosuppressive drugs. The incidence of pseudo-Pelger-Huët in kidney transplant patients, characterized as neutrophil dysplasia, was observed in 9 of 170 patients (5.3%) at the São Francisco Hospital de Assis, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Awareness of possible circulating neutrophil alterations in transplant patients is important for laboratory professionals who should report these findings of cell changes. It should be highlighted that the poor segmentation and the chromatin hypercondensation observed initially in pseudo-Pelger-Huët patients can be suggestive of early-stage neutrophils. Only a combination of laboratory and clinical data will facilitate a better understanding of this anomaly and its correct follow-up and management.
