RESUMEN

Increased levels of proteases, such as trypsin, in the distal intestine have been implicated in intestinal pathological conditions1-3. However, the players and mechanisms that underlie protease regulation in the intestinal lumen have remained unclear. Here we show that Paraprevotella strains isolated from the faecal microbiome of healthy human donors are potent trypsin-degrading commensals. Mechanistically, Paraprevotella recruit trypsin to the bacterial surface through type IX secretion system-dependent polysaccharide-anchoring proteins to promote trypsin autolysis. Paraprevotella colonization protects IgA from trypsin degradation and enhances the effectiveness of oral vaccines against Citrobacter rodentium. Moreover, Paraprevotella colonization inhibits lethal infection with murine hepatitis virus-2, a mouse coronavirus that is dependent on trypsin and trypsin-like proteases for entry into host cells4,5. Consistently, carriage of putative genes involved in trypsin degradation in the gut microbiome was associated with reduced severity of diarrhoea in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Thus, trypsin-degrading commensal colonization may contribute to the maintenance of intestinal homeostasis and protection from pathogen infection.

PURPOSE: To clarify the influence of surgical volume on the mortality and morbidity of gastrointestinal perforation in children in Japan. METHODS: We collected data on pediatric patients with gastrointestinal perforation between 2017 and 2019, from the National Clinical Database. The surgical volumes of various institutions were classified into three groups: low (average number of surgeries for gastrointestinal perforation/year < 1), medium (≥ 1, < 6), and high (≥ 6). The observed-to-expected (o/e) ratios of 30-day mortality and morbidity were calculated for each group using an existing risk model. RESULTS: Among 1641 patients (median age, 0.0 years), the 30-day mortality and morbidity rates were 5.2% and 37.7%, respectively. The 30-day mortality rates in the low-, medium-, and high-volume institutions were 4.9%, 5.3%, and 5.1% (p = 0.94), and the 30-day morbidity rates in the three groups were 26.8%, 39.7%, and 37.7% (p < 0.01), respectively. The o/e ratios of 30-day mortality were 1.05 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.83-1.26), 1.08 (95% CI 1.01-1.15), and 1.02 (95% CI 0.91-1.13), and those of 30-day morbidity were 1.72 (95% CI 0.93-2.51), 1.03 (95% CI 0.79-1.28), and 0.95 (95% CI 0.56-1.33), respectively. CONCLUSION: Surgical volume does not have significant impact on the outcomes of pediatric gastrointestinal perforation in Japan.

PURPOSE: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic limited the delivery of medical resources. Although surgeries are triaged according to disease severity and urgency, a delay in diagnosis and surgery can be detrimental. We conducted this study to analyze data on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric surgery for different diseases or disorders. METHODS: We compiled and compared data on pediatric surgical cases from 2018 to 2020, using the National Clinical Database. The number of diseases, severity, complication rates, mortality rates by disease/disorder, and the COVID-19 pandemic areas were analyzed. RESULTS: The total number of cases of pediatric surgery in 2018, 2019, and 2020 was 50,026, 49,794, and 45,621, respectively, reflecting an 8.8% decrease in 2020 from 2018 and an 8.4% decrease in 2020 from 2019. A decrease was observed when the number of patients with COVID-19 was high and was greater in areas with a low infection rate. There was a marked decrease in the number of inguinal hernia cases. The number of emergency room visits and emergency surgeries decreased, but their relative proportions increased. CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic decreased the number of pediatric surgeries, reflecting the limitations of scheduled surgeries and infection control measures.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pulmonary growth in congenital diaphragmatic hernias (CDH) remains unclear. We investigated postoperative pulmonary vascular growth using serial lung perfusion scintigraphy in patients with CDH. METHODS: Neonates with left CDH who underwent surgery and postoperative lung perfusion scintigraphy at our institution between 2001 and 2020 were included. Patient demographics, clinical courses, and lung scintigraphy data were retrospectively analyzed by reviewing medical records. RESULTS: Twenty-one patients with CDH were included. Of these, 10 underwent serial lung scintigraphy. The ipsilateral perfusion rate and median age on the 1st and serial lung scintigraphy were 32% (34 days) and 33% (3.6 years), respectively. Gestational age at prenatal diagnosis (p = 0.02), alveolar-arterial oxygen difference (A-aDO2) at birth (p = 0.007), and preoperative nitric oxide (NO) use (p = 0.014) significantly correlated with the 1st lung scintigraphy. No other variables, including operative approach, were significantly correlated with the 1st or serial scintigraphy findings. All patients improved lung perfusion with serial studies [Difference: + 7.0 (4.3-13.25) %, p = 0.001, paired t-test]. This improvement was not significantly correlated with preoperative A-aDO2 (p = 0.96), NO use (p = 0.28), or liver up (p = 0.90). The difference was significantly larger in patients who underwent thoracoscopic repair than in those who underwent open abdominal repair [+ 10.6 (5.0-17.1) % vs. + 4.25 (1.2-7.9) %, p = 0.042]. CONCLUSION: Our study indicated a postoperative improvement in ipsilateral lung vascular growth, which is possibly enhanced by a minimally invasive approach, in patients with CDH.

The Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway plays a key role in development and carcinogenesis. Although some target genes of this signaling have been identified in various tissues and neoplasms, the comprehensive understanding of the target genes and their roles in the development of human cancer, including hepatoma and colorectal cancer remain to be fully elucidated. In this study, we searched for genes regulated by the Wnt signaling in liver cancer using HuH-7 hepatoma cells. A comparison of the expression profiles between cells expressing an active form of mutant ß-catenin and cells expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) identified seven genes upregulated by the mutant ß-catenin gene (CTNNB1). Among the seven genes, we focused in this study on ODAM, odontogenic, ameloblast associated, as a novel target gene. Interestingly, its expression was frequently upregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal adenocarcinoma, and hepatoblastoma. We additionally identified a distant enhancer region that was associated with the ß-catenin/TCF7L2 complex. Further analyses revealed that ODAM plays an important role in the regulation of the cell cycle, DNA synthesis, and cell proliferation. These data may be useful for clarification of the main molecular mechanism(s) underlying these cancers.

PURPOSE: Postoperative anastomotic leakage is the most frequent short-term complication of esophageal atresia repair in neonates. We conducted this study using a nationwide surgical database in Japan to identify the risk factors for anastomotic leakage in neonates undergoing esophageal atresia repair. METHODS: Neonates diagnosed with esophageal atresia between 2015 and 2019 were identified in the National Clinical Database. Postoperative anastomotic leakage was compared among patients to identify the potential risk factors, using univariate analysis. Multivariable logistic regression analysis included sex, gestational age, thoracoscopic repair, staged repair, and procedure time as independent variables. RESULTS: We identified 667 patients, with an overall leakage incidence of 7.8% (n = 52). Anastomotic leakage was more likely in patients who underwent staged repairs than in those who did not (21.2% vs. 5.2%, respectively) and in patients with a procedure time > 3.5 h than in those with a procedure time < 3.5 h (12.6% vs. 3.0%, respectively; p < 0.001). Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified staged repair (odds ratio [OR] 4.89, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.22-10.16, p < 0.001) and a longer procedure time (OR 4.65, 95% CI 2.38-9.95, p < 0.001) as risk factors associated with postoperative leakage. CONCLUSION: Staged procedures and long operative times are associated with postoperative anastomotic leakage, suggesting that leakage is more likely after complex esophageal atresia repair and that such patients require refined treatment strategies.

BACKGROUND: Aureobasidium melanigenum is a ubiquitous dematiaceous fungus that rarely causes invasive human infections. Here, we present a case of Aureobasidium melanigenum bloodstream infection in a 20-year-old man with long-term catheter use. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old man receiving home care with severe disabilities due to cerebral palsy and short bowel syndrome, resulting in long-term central venous catheter use, was referred to our hospital with a fever. After the detection of yeast-like cells in blood cultures on day 3, antifungal therapy was initiated. Two identification tests performed at a clinical microbiological laboratory showed different identification results: Aureobasidium pullulans from matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and Cryptococcus albidus from a VITEK2 system. Therefore, we changed the antifungal drug to liposomal amphotericin B. The fungus was identified as A. melanigenum by DNA sequence-based analysis. The patient recovered with antifungal therapy and long-term catheter removal. CONCLUSION: It is difficult to correctly identify A. melanigenum by routine microbiological testing. Clinicians must pay attention to the process of identification of yeast-like cells and retain A. melanigenum in cases of refractory fungal infection.

BACKGROUND: Biliary atresia (BA) is among the commonest indications for liver transplantation (LT) in children. We examined whether serum matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) is useful for diagnosis of BA in Japanese infants, and whether serum MMP-7 concentrations before and after Kasai portoenterostomy (KP) predicted LT within a year. METHODS: Subjects under 6 months old at eight pediatric centers in Japan were enrolled retrospectively, including patients with cholestasis and normal controls (NC) without liver disease. Patients with cholestasis were divided into groups representing BA versus cholestasis from other causes (non-BA). Serum samples were collected from patients with BA at diagnosis and 1 and 4 weeks after KP, as well as from non-BA and NC. RESULTS: Serum MMP-7 concentrations were significantly higher in BA at diagnosis (median, 89.1 ng/ml) than in non-BA (11.0; p < 0.001) or NC (10.3; p < 0.001). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis of MMP-7 for BA versus non-BA yielded an area under the ROC curve of 0.99 (95% confidence interval, 0.96-1.00). An optimal cut-off value of 18.6 ng/ml for serum MMP-7 in diagnosing BA demonstrated sensitivity and specificity of 100% and 90%, respectively. Serum MMP-7 before and 1 week and 4 weeks after KP did not differ significantly between BA requiring only KP and BA requiring LT after KP. CONCLUSION: Serum MMP-7 is a useful marker for diagnosis of BA in Japanese infants, but it could not predict LT within a year.

BACKGROUND: Some neuroblastoma (NB) cases are suitable for minimally invasive surgery (MIS), but indication and technical issue are unclear. We assessed the current status of MIS for abdominal NB after mass screening period in Japan. METHODS: Preliminary questionnaires requesting the numbers of NB cases that underwent MIS from 2004 to 2016 were sent to 159 Japanese institutes of pediatric surgery. The secondary questionnaires were then sent to the institutions that reported MIS cases of NB in order to collect detailed data. RESULTS: One hundred and thirty-four (84.2%) institutions responded to the preliminary questionnaires, and 83 (52.2%) reported managing operative cases. The total number of operative cases was 1496. MIS was performed for 175 (11.6%) cases, of which the completed forms of 140 patients were returned, including 100 abdominal NB cases. The male/female ratio was 51/49. Forty-seven cases underwent a laparoscopic biopsy, and 2 (4.3%) cases were converted to laparotomy due to bleeding. Sixty-five cases underwent MIS for radical resection, and 7 (10.8%) were converted to laparotomy. The reasons for open conversion were bleeding and severe adhesion. Regarding open conversion, there were no significant relationships between conversion and neo-adjuvant chemotherapy, biopsies, stage, size, or MYCN amplification. We found no relationship between resectability and vascular encasement in this study. There was relationship between the resected tumor size and the patients' height, which was expressed using the following formula: [Formula: see text] (x, patients height, y, tumor size; p = 0.004219, SE: 1.55566). Postoperative complications after radical resection were recognized in 7 (10.8%) cases. CONCLUSIONS: MIS was performed in limited cases of abdominal NB. A laparoscopic biopsy with careful attention to bleeding is feasible. The resected tumor size was shown to correlate with the patients' height. Tumor size within 6 cm of maximum diameter can be resected safely.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the perioperative outcomes of laparoscopically assisted anorectoplasty (LAARP) and conventional procedures (CPs) for anorectal malformation (ARM) using a national inpatient database in Japan. METHODS: Using the Diagnosis Procedure Combination database, we identified patients who underwent anorectoplasty for high- or intermediate-type ARMs from 2010 to 2019. Primary outcomes were postoperative rectal prolapse, anal stenosis, and general complications. Secondary outcomes were the duration of anesthesia and length of hospital stay. We performed 1:2 propensity score-matched analyses to compare the outcomes between the LAARP and CP groups. RESULTS: We identified 1005 eligible patients, comprising 286 and 719 patients who underwent LAARP and CP, respectively. The propensity score-matched groups included 281 patients with LAARP and 562 with CP. The LAARP group showed a higher proportion of rectal prolapse (21.4% vs. 8.5%; odds ratio, 2.91; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.89-4.48; p < 0.001) and longer duration of anesthesia (462 min vs. 365 min; difference, 90 min; 95% CI 43-137; p < 0.001) than the CP group. No significant differences were found in other outcomes. CONCLUSION: LAARP had worse outcomes than CP in terms of rectal prolapse. Thus, we propose that LAARP may require technical refinement to improve patient outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of abdominal drainage at appendectomy for complicated appendicitis in children. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although an abdominal drain placement at appendectomy is an option for reducing or preventing postoperative infectious complication, there is controversy regarding its effect for complicated appendicitis. METHOD: The study used the data on appendectomies for complicated appendicitis in children (≤15 years old) that were operated in 2015 and registered in the National Clinical Database, a nationwide surgical database in Japan. One-to-two propensity score matching was performed to compare postoperative outcomes between patients with and without drainage at appendectomy. RESULT: The study included 1762 pediatric appendectomies for complicated appendicitis, 458 of which underwent abdominal drainage at appendectomy. In the propensity-matched analysis, the drainage group showed a significant increase in wound dehiscence [drain (-) vs drain (+); 0.3% vs 2.4%, P = 0.001], and postoperative hospital stay (median: 7 days vs 9 days, P < 0.001). There were no significant differences in the incidence of any complications, organ space surgical site infection, re-admission, and reoperation.Subgroup analyses in perforated appendicitis and perforated appendicitis with abscess, and open and laparoscopic appendectomy all demonstrated that drain placement was not associated with a reduction in any complication or organ space surgical site infection. However, it was significantly associated with longer hospital stays. CONCLUSION: This study suggested that an abdominal drain placement at appendectomy for complicated appendicitis among children has no advantage and can be harmful for preventing postoperative complications.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the optimal indication and availability of prophylactic innominate artery transection (PIAT). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of the patients with neurological or neuromuscular disorders (NMDs) who underwent PIAT. Meanwhile, we originally defined the tracheal flatting ratio (TFR) and mediastinum-thoracic anteroposterior ratio (MTR) from preoperative chest computed tomography imaging and compared these parameters between non-PIAT and PIAT group. RESULTS: There were 13 patients who underwent PIAT. The median age was 22 years. PIAT was planned before in one, simultaneously in five, and after tracheostomy or laryngotracheal separation in seven patients. Image evaluations of the brain to assess circle of Willis were performed in all patients. Appropriate skin incisions with sternotomy to expose the innominate artery were made in four patients. All patients are still alive except one late death without any association with PIAT. No neurological complications occurred in any patients. As significant differences (p < 0.01) between two groups were observed for TFR and MTR, objective validity of the indication of PIAT was found. CONCLUSIONS: PIAT is safe and tolerable in case of innominate artery compression of the trachea with NMDs. TFR and MTR are useful objective indexes to judge the indication of PIAT.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify clinical and genetic features of Japanese children with congenital chloride diarrhea (CCD). STUDY DESIGN: This was a multi-institutional, retrospective survey of 616 pediatric centers in Japan with identified patients with CCD between 2014 and 2018. Mutations involving SLC26A3 were detected by Sanger sequencing. RESULTS: Thirteen patients met all entry criteria including mutations in SLC26A3, and 14 patients satisfied clinical diagnostic criteria. Homozygous or compound heterozygous mutations in SLC26A3, including 6 novel mutations, were identified in 13 of these 14 patients (93%). The most common (detected in 7 of 13) was c.2063-1g>t. Median age at diagnosis was 1 day. Nine of the patients meeting all criteria were diagnosed as neonates (69%). Median follow-up duration was 10 years. When studied, 8 patients had <5 stools daily (62%), and all had fewer than in infancy. Only 1 patient had nephrocalcinosis, and 3 (23%) had mild chronic kidney disease. Neurodevelopment was generally good; only 1 patient required special education. Five patients (38%) received long-term sodium, potassium, and chloride supplementation. CONCLUSIONS: Early fetal ultrasound diagnosis and prompt long-term sodium, potassium, and chloride supplementation were common management features. Genetic analysis of SLC26A3 provided definitive diagnosis of CCD. In contrast with previously reported localities, c.2063-1g>t might be a founder mutation in East Asia.

PURPOSE: To verify the association between congenital heart disease (CHD) and postoperative complications after primary repair of esophageal atresia in patients from a Japanese nationwide database. METHODS: We identified babies in the Diagnosis Procedure Combination database who underwent radical surgery for esophageal atresia from 2010 to 2016. We used multivariable logistic regression analyses to evaluate the occurrence of anastomotic leakage and anastomotic stricture. RESULTS: Among 431 patients who underwent primary anastomosis, 114 patients (27%) had CHD. Anastomotic leakage occurred in 77 patients (17.9%) and stricture in 154 (35.7%). Compared with patients whose anesthetic duration was less than 240 min, those with anesthesia lasting from 240 to 360 min (odds ratio 2.49; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.17-5.27; p = 0.02) or more than 360 min (odds ratio 4.10; 95% CI 1.69-9.96; p = 0.002) were more likely to experience anastomotic leakage. Male patients had a lower risk of anastomotic stricture than female patients (odds ratio 0.65; 95% CI 0.43-0.9; p = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: CHD was not associated with anastomotic leakage or stricture. The only significant predictor of anastomotic leakage was duration of anesthesia.

The bile salt export pump (BSEP) plays an important role in biliary secretion. Mutations in ABCB11, the gene encoding BSEP, induce progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 2 (PFIC2), which presents with severe jaundice and liver dysfunction. A less severe phenotype, called benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis type 2, is also known. About 200 missense mutations in ABCB11 have been reported. However, the phenotype-genotype correlation has not been clarified. Furthermore, the frequencies of ABCB11 mutations differ between Asian and European populations. We report a patient with PFIC2 carrying a homozygous ABCB11 mutation c.386G>A (p.C129Y) that is most frequently reported in Japan. The pathogenicity of BSEPC129Y has not been investigated. In this study, we performed the molecular analysis of this ABCB11 mutation using cells expressing BSEPC129Y. We found that trafficking of BSEPC129Y to the plasma membrane was impaired and that the expression of BSEPC129Y on the cell surface was significantly lower than that in the control. The amount of bile acids transported via BSEPC129Y was also significantly lower than that via BSEPWT. The transport activity of BSEPC129Y may be conserved because the amount of membrane BSEPC129Y corresponded to the uptake of taurocholate into membrane vesicles. In conclusion, we demonstrated that c.386G>A (p.C129Y) in ABCB11 was a causative mutation correlating with the phenotype of patients with PFIC2, impairment of biliary excretion from hepatocytes, and the absence of canalicular BSEP expression in liver histological assessments. Mutational analysis in ABCB11 could facilitate the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of intrahepatic cholestasis.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative small bowel obstruction (SBO) is one of the most serious adverse events resulting in deteriorated quality of life in children. Numerous studies have shown that laparoscopic surgery significantly reduces the occurrence of SBO compared with open surgery in adults. However, evidence of the advantages of laparoscopic surgery over open surgery in terms of reducing SBO is lacking in children. Fundoplication is a common abdominal procedure in children. This study was performed to compare the occurrence of SBO after laparoscopic fundoplication (LF) versus open fundoplication (OF). METHODS: Using the Diagnosis Procedure Combination database, a national inpatient database in Japan, we retrospectively identified patients aged 0-18 years who underwent LF or OF from July 2010 to March 2016. Propensity score adjustment was used to compare the occurrence of SBO between the groups. RESULTS: We identified 1838 eligible patients who underwent LF (n = 1362) or OF (n = 476). The median age at surgery was 4.0 and 1.5 years in the LF and OF group, respectively (P < 0.001). The median weight at admission was 11.4 and 7.5 kg, respectively (P < 0.001). Nineteen (1.4%) patients in the LF group and 13 (2.7%) in the OF group had at least one episode of SBO (P = 0.11, log-rank test). In the propensity score-adjusted Cox regression analysis, SBO was significantly less likely to occur in the LF than OF group (hazard ratio, 0.36; 95% confidence interval 0.16-0.82; P = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: In this retrospective nationwide study, LF was significantly associated with a reduction in SBO compared with OF in children.

BACKGROUND: The association between congenital heart disease (CHD) and infantile cholestasis, a key finding for the diagnosis of biliary atresia (BA), has not been previously investigated. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the characteristics of direct hyperbilirubinemia (D-HB) in infants with CHD. METHODS: All neonates admitted to the present hospital and diagnosed with CHD in 2015 and 2016 were included. D-HB (direct bilirubin ≥ 2.0 mg/dL) at ≤60 days of age and other clinical parameters were retrospectively reviewed. Statistical analysis according to presence of D-HB was performed using chi-squared test or Wilcoxon rank sum test. RESULTS: Seventy-six patients (M:F, 36:40) were included in this study. CHD consisted of ventricular septal defect in 17, patent ductus arteriosus in 10, and other in 49. Thirteen patients (17.1%) had D-HB at ≤60 days of age. Resolution of D-HB (DB < 2.0 mg/dL) occurred in 10 of the 13 patients during the hospital stay, and this occurred in ≤7 days in eight of the 10 patients. Sex, gestational age, birthweight, chromosomal anomalies, need for Fontan operation for CHD repair, and/or cardiac operation were not associated with D-HB at ≤60 days of age. CONCLUSION: While D-HB was frequently observed in infants with CHD, the majority of D-HB cases resolved spontaneously in ≤1 week. Neonatal clinical parameters or CHD status was not predictive of D-HB. D-HB lasting >1 week in infants with CHD should be evaluated for the cause.

PURPOSE: Infants with Alagille syndrome (AGS) frequently develop neonatal cholestasis, and some AGS infants who suspected of biliary atresia subsequently undergo the Kasai operation with the diagnosis of biliary atresia. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the Kasai operation on liver and patient outcomes among AGS patients, using a meta-analysis. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of studies describing the outcomes of AGS patients with/without the Kasai operation were conducted. The analyzed outcomes were liver transplantation, not living with the native liver, and mortality for any reason. RESULTS: We identified 6 studies (394 AGS patients). All studies were retrospective cohort or case-control studies. The incidences of liver transplantation, not living with the native liver, and mortality were significantly higher in AGS patients who underwent the Kasai operation than in those who did not undergo the Kasai operation (odds ratio: 6.46, 95% CI 3.23-12.89, p < 0.00001; odds ratio: 25.88, 95% CI 2.83-236.84, p < 0.004; odds ratio: 15.05, 95% CI 2.70-83.93, p = 0.002, respectively). CONCLUSION: The Kasai operation was associated with poor outcomes in AGS patients. It remains unclear if the Kasai operation directly deteriorates liver and patient outcomes in AGS patients.

PURPOSE: The number of infants with gastroschisis is increasing worldwide, but advances in neonatal intensive care and parenteral nutrition have reduced gastroschisis mortality. Recent clinical data on gastroschisis are often from Western nations. This study aimed to examine clinical features and practice patterns of gastroschisis in Japan. METHODS: We examined treatment options, outcomes, and discharge status among inpatients with simple gastroschisis (SG) and complex gastroschisis (CG), 2010-2016, using a national inpatient database in Japan. RESULTS: The 247 eligible patients (222 with SG) had average birth weight of 2102 g and average gestational age of 34 weeks; 30% had other congenital anomalies. Digestive anomalies were most common, followed by circulatory anomalies. In-hospital mortality was 8.1%. The median age at start of full enteral feeding was 30 days. The median length of stay was 46 days. There were no significant differences in outcomes except for length of stay, starting full enteral feeding and total hospitalization costs between the SG and CG groups. About 80% of patients were discharged to home without home medical care. The readmission rate was 28%. CONCLUSION: This study's findings on the clinical characteristics and outcomes of gastroschisis are useful for the clinical management of gastroschisis.
