RESUMEN

Photorespiration begins with the oxygenation reaction catalyzed by Rubisco and is the second highest metabolic flux in plants after photosynthesis. Although the core biochemical pathway of photorespiration has been well characterized, little is known about the underlying regulatory mechanisms. Some rate-limiting regulation of photorespiration has been suggested to occur at both the transcriptional and posttranslational levels, but experimental evidence is scarce. Here, we found that mitogen-activated protein kinase 2 (MAPK2) interacts with photorespiratory glycolate oxidase and hydroxypyruvate reductase, and the activities of these photorespiratory enzymes were regulated via phosphorylation modifications in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Gas exchange measurements revealed that the photorespiration rate decreased in rice mapk2 mutants under normal growth conditions, without disturbing photosynthesis. Due to decreased photorespiration, the levels of some key photorespiratory metabolites, such as 2-phosphoglycolate, glycine, and glycerate, significantly decreased in mapk2 mutants, but those of photosynthetic metabolites were not altered. Transcriptome assays also revealed that the expression levels of some flux-controlling genes in photorespiration were significantly downregulated in mapk2 mutants. Our findings provide molecular evidence for the association between MAPK2 and photorespiration and suggest that MAPK2 regulates the key enzymes of photorespiration at both the transcriptional and posttranslational phosphorylation levels in rice.

Traditional switching operations require on-site work, and the high voltage generated by arc discharges can pose a risk of injury to the operator. Therefore, a combination of visual servo and robot control is used to localize the switching operation and construct hand-eye calibration equations. The solution to the hand-eye calibration equations is coupled with the rotation matrix and translation vectors, and it depends on the initial value determination. This article presents a convex relaxation global optimization hand-eye calibration algorithm based on dual quaternions. Firstly, the problem model is simplified using the mathematical tools of dual quaternions, and then the linear matrix inequality convex optimization method is used to obtain a rotation matrix with higher accuracy. Afterwards, the calibration equations of the translation vectors are rewritten, and a new objective function is established to solve the coupling influence between them, maintaining positioning precision at approximately 2.9 mm. Considering the impact of noise on the calibration process, Gaussian noise is added to the solutions of the rotation matrix and translation vector to make the data more closely resemble the real scene in order to evaluate the performance of different hand-eye calibration algorithms. Eventually, an experiment comparing different hand-eye calibration methods proves that the proposed algorithm is better than other hand-eye calibration algorithms in terms of calibration accuracy, robustness to noise, and stability, satisfying the accuracy requirements of switching operations.

BACKGROUND: Malignant pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma (PCPG) is lethal and difficult to diagnose before metastasis. This study is aiming to characterize the PCPG and explore novel prognostic markers. METHODS: Clinical data of patients with pathologically confirmed invasive and noninvasive PCPG were collected and analyzed. Then, the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and HUB genes were identified by R package "limma" in GSE67066-GPL570. Afterward, the prognostic markers were screened out using R packages of "survival" and "survminer" based on the TCGA data. RESULTS: The 34 invasive PCPGs were characterized by irregular contour and unclear boundary on CT and capsule/extracapsule tissue invasion on pathology compared with the 42 noninvasive PCPGs. Then, 29 upregulated and 30 downregulated DEGs were identified in malignant PCPG compared with benign, which were mainly enriched in the terms of calcium ion binding, neuron cell-cell adhesion, axon, regulation of hormone levels, and regulation of secretion by cell. Of which, nine DEGs were furtherly selected as the HUB genes. Finally, CNTN4 and SH3GL2 were found to be highly expressed in malignant PCPGs and negatively correlated with progression-free interval. CONCLUSIONS: Malignant PCPGs tend to be aggressive in imaging and pathology. The high expression of CNTN4 and SH3GL2 in PCPGs may indicate a poor prognosis.

BACKGROUND: To retrospectively analyse postoperative adverse events in oldest-old patients (aged 90 years and older) with intertrochanteric fractures treated under various anaesthetic techniques. METHODS: A total of 153 consecutive patients participated in this study, of which 127 patients who underwent surgery with neuraxial anaesthesia or general anaesthesia for intertrochanteric fractures between October 2019 and October 2022 were eligible and evaluated. They were divided into the neuraxial anaesthesia and general anaesthesia groups. The demographic characteristics and postoperative adverse events were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: A total of 13 patients (10.24%), including 6 in the neuraxial anaesthesia group (8.22%) and 7 in the general anaesthesia group (12.96%), died within 30 days after surgery. No significant differences between the two groups were observed. Postoperative delirium occurred in 40 patients (31.49%), including 17 (23.29%) in the neuraxial anaesthesia group and 23 (42.59%) in the general anaesthesia group; there was a significant difference between the two groups [P = 0.02, odds ratio (OR) = 0.41]. The other postoperative adverse events, including heart failure, acute stroke, acute myocardial infarction, pulmonary disease, anaemia, deep vein thrombosis, hypoproteinaemia, and electrolyte disorders, were not significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that different anaesthesia methods do not affect the incidence of adverse events, such as death within 30 days after surgery in oldest-old patients with intertrochanteric fractures. However, more patients developed delirium after surgery in the general anaesthesia group (23, 42.59%) than in the neuraxial anaesthesia group (17, 23.29%); this may indicate that spinal anaesthesia reduces the incidence of postoperative delirium (P = 0.02, OR = 0.41). Objective: To assess lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT) risk factors after artificial femoral head replacement for elderly femoral neck fractures. A nomogram model was constructed to predict its risk. Methods: In analyzing 144 participants who underwent artificial femoral head replacement for elderly femoral neck fractures, researchers collected clinical data to identify factors associated with lower extremity DVT. The study collected numerous variables ranging from age and sex to history of lower extremity DVT and use of anticoagulant drugs after surgery. The patients were in two groups: those who developed DVT (n = 62) and those who did not (n = 82). Multivariate logistic regression analysis helped to identify factors influencing the occurrence of DVT after artificial femoral head replacement. The software packages used were R 4.1.0 and RMS. Results: Univariate and multivariate regression analysis identified age, ASA level, D-dimer of lower limb DVT, ALB, and PLT as predictive risk factors of lower extremity DVT after artificial femoral head replacement for elderly femoral neck fractures. Those risk factors were used to construct a clinical predictive nomogram. The calibration curves for hypertension in patients with OSAHS risk revealed excellent accuracy of the predictive nomogram model. The unadjusted concordance index (C-index) for the model was 0.877 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.805-0.942]. The AUC was 0.8375002. Decision curve analysis showed that the predictive model could be applied clinically when the threshold probability was 20 to 80%. Conclusions: The researchers constructed and validated a clinical nomogram to predict the occurrence of lower extremity DVT after artificial femoral head replacement in elderly patients with femoral neck fractures. Age, ASA level, D-dimer, and history of lower limb DVT, ALB, and PLT were demonstrated to be predictive risk factors of lower extremity DVT in this circumstance. This practical prognostic nomogram may help improve clinical decision-making.

Oceanic dissolved organic matter (DOM) comprises a complex molecular mixture which is typically refractory and homogenous in the deep layers of the ocean. Though the refractory nature of deep-sea DOM is increasingly attributed to microbial metabolism, it remains unexplored whether ubiquitous microbial metabolism of distinct carbon substrates could lead to similar molecular composition of refractory DOM. Here, we conducted microbial incubation experiments using four typically bioavailable substrates (L-alanine, trehalose, sediment DOM extract, and diatom lysate) to investigate how exogenous substrates are transformed by a natural microbial assemblage. The results showed that although each-substrate-amendment induced different changes in the initial microbial assemblage and the amended substrates were almost depleted after 90 days of dark incubation, the bacterial community compositions became similar in all incubations on day 90. Correspondingly, revealed by ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry, molecular composition of DOM in all incubations became compositionally consistent with recalcitrant DOM and similar toward that of DOM from the deep-sea. These results indicate that while the composition of natural microbial communities can shift with substrate exposures, long-term microbial transformation of distinct substrates can ultimately lead to a similar refractory DOM composition. These findings provide an explanation for the homogeneous and refractory features of deep-sea DOM.

BACKGROUND: Blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) is characterized by the production of berries that are smaller than most common fruits, and the underlying mechanisms of fruit size in blueberry remain elusive. V. corymbosum 'O'Neal' and 'Bluerain' are commercial southern highbush blueberry cultivars with large- and small-size fruits, respectively, which mature 'O'Neal' fruits are 1 ~ 2-fold heavier than those of 'Bluerain'. In this study, the ontogenetical patterns of 'O'Neal' and 'Bluerain' hypanthia and fruits were compared, and comparative transcriptomic analysis was performed during early fruit development. RESULTS: V. corymbosum 'O'Neal' and 'Bluerain' hypanthia and fruits exhibited intricate temporal and spatial cell proliferation and expansion patterns. Cell division before anthesis and cell expansion after fertilization were the major restricting factors, and outer mesocarp was the key tissue affecting fruit size variation among blueberry genotypes. Comparative transcriptomic and annotation analysis of differentially expressed genes revealed that the plant hormone signal transduction pathway was enriched, and that jasmonate-related TIFYs genes might be the key components orchestrating other phytohormones and influencing fruit size during early blueberry fruit development. CONCLUSIONS: These results provided detailed ontogenetic evidence for determining blueberry fruit size, and revealed the important roles of phytohormone signal transductions involving in early fruit development. The TIFY genes could be useful as markers for large-size fruit selection in the current breeding programs of blueberry.

Phytoplankton contribute almost half of the world's total primary production. The exudates and viral lysates of phytoplankton are two important forms of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in aquatic environments and fuel heterotrophic prokaryotic metabolism. However, the effect of viral infection on the composition and biological availability of phytoplankton-released DOM is poorly understood. Here, we investigated the optical characteristics and microbial utilization of the exudates and viral lysates of the ecologically important unicellular picophytoplankton Prochlorococcus Our results showed that Prochlorococcus DOM produced by viral lysis (Pro-vDOM) with phages of three different morphotypes (myovirus P-HM2, siphovirus P-HS2, and podovirus P-SSP7) had higher humic-like fluorescence intensities, lower absorption coefficients, and higher spectral slopes than DOM exuded by Prochlorococcus (Pro-exudate). The results indicate that viral infection altered the composition of Prochlorococcus-derived DOM and might contribute to the pool of oceanic humic-like DOM. Incubation with Pro-vDOM resulted in a greater dissolved organic carbon (DOC) degradation rate and lower absorption spectral slope and heterotrophic bacterial growth rate than incubation with Pro-exudate, suggesting that Pro-vDOM was more bioavailable than Pro-exudate. In addition, the stimulated microbial community succession trajectories were significantly different between the Pro-exudate and Pro-vDOM treatments, indicating that viral lysates play an important role in shaping the heterotrophic bacterial community. Our study demonstrated that viral lysis altered the chemical composition and biological availability of DOM derived from Prochlorococcus, which is the numerically dominant phytoplankton in the oligotrophic ocean.IMPORTANCE The unicellular picocyanobacterium Prochlorococcus is the numerically dominant phytoplankton in the oligotrophic ocean, contributing to the vast majority of marine primary production. Prochlorococcus releases a significant fraction of fixed organic matter into the surrounding environment and supports a vital portion of heterotrophic bacterial activity. Viral lysis is an important biomass loss process of Prochlorococcus However, little is known about whether and how viral lysis affects Prochlorococcus-released dissolved organic matter (DOM). Our paper shows that viral infection alters the optical properties (such as the absorption coefficients, spectral slopes, and fluorescence intensities) of released DOM and might contribute to a humic-like DOM pool and carbon sequestration in the ocean. Meanwhile, viral lysis also releases various intracellular labile DOM, including amino acids, protein-like DOM, and lower-molecular-weight DOM, increases the bioavailability of DOM, and shapes the successive trajectory of the heterotrophic bacterial community. Our study highlights the importance of viruses in impacting the DOM quality in the ocean.

BACKGROUND: 5G communication technology has been applied to several fields in telemedicine, but its effectiveness, safety, and stability in remote laparoscopic telesurgery have not been established. Here, we conducted four ultra-remote laparoscopic surgeries on a swine model under the 5G network. The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness, safety, and stability of the 5G network in remote laparoscopic telesurgery. METHODS: Four ultra-remote laparoscopic surgeries (network communication distance of nearly 3000 km), including left nephrectomy, partial hepatectomy, cholecystectomy, and cystectomy, were performed on a swine model with a 5G wireless network connection using a domestically produced "MicroHand" surgical robot. The average network delay, operative time, blood loss, and intraoperative complications were recorded. RESULTS: Four laparoscopic telesurgeries were safely performed through a 5G network, with an average network delay of 264 ms (including a mean round-trip transporting delay of 114 ms and a 1.20% data packet loss ratio). The total operation time was 2 h. The total blood loss was 25 ml, and no complications occurred during the procedures. CONCLUSIONS: Ultra-remote laparoscopic surgery can be performed safely and smoothly with 5G wireless network connection using domestically produced equipment. More importantly, our model can provide insights for promoting the future development of telesurgery, especially in areas where Internet cables are difficult to lay or cannot be laid.

In this study, we investigated the microbially mediated transformation of labile Synechococcus-derived DOM to RDOM using a 60-day experimental incubation system. Three phases of TOC degradation activity (I, II and III) were observed following the addition of Synechococcus-derived DOM. The phases were characterized by organic carbon consumption rates of 8.77, 1.26 and 0.16 µmol L-1 day-1 , respectively. Excitation emission matrix analysis revealed the presence of three FDOM components including tyrosine-like, fulvic acid-like, and humic-like molecules. The three components also exhibited differing biological availabilities that could be considered as labile DOM (LDOM), semi-labile DOM (SLDOM) and RDOM, respectively. DOM molecular composition was also evaluated using FT-ICR MS. Based on differing biological turnover rates and normalized intensity values, a total of 1704 formulas were identified as candidate LDOM, SLDOM and RDOM molecules. Microbial transformation of LDOM to RDOM tended to proceed from high to low molecular weight, as well as from molecules with high to low double bond equivalent (DBE) values. Relatively higher aromaticity was observed in the formulas of RDOM molecules relative to those of LDOM molecules. FDOM components provide valuable proxy information to investigate variation in the bioavailability of DOM. These results suggest that coordinating fluorescence spectroscopy and FT-ICR MS of DOM, as conducted here, is an effective strategy to identify and characterize LDOM, SLDOM and RDOM molecules in incubation experiments emulating natural systems. The results described here provide greater insight into the metabolism of phytoplankton photosynthate by heterotrophic bacteria in marine environments.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is an important public health issue worldwide. However, evidence concerning the impact of environmental factors on TB is sparse. We performed a retrospective analysis to determine the spatiotemporal trends and geographic variations of, and the factors associated with, the TB prevalence in Inner Mongolia. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of the epidemiology of TB. A Bayesian spatiotemporal model was used to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution and trends of the TB prevalence. A spatial panel data model was used to identify factors associated with the TB prevalence in the 101 counties of Inner Mongolia, using county-level aggregated data collected by the Inner Mongolia Center for Disease Control and Prevention. RESULTS: From January 2010 to December 2014, 79,466 (6.36‱) incident TB cases were recorded. The TB prevalence ranged from 4.97‱ (12,515/25,167,547) in 2014 to 7.49‱ (18,406/ 24,578,678) in 2010; the majority of TB cases were in males, and in those aged 46-60 years; by occupation, farmers and herdsmen were the most frequently affected. The Bayesian spatiotemporal model showed that the overall TB prevalence decreased linearly from 2010 to 2014 and occupation-stratified analyses yielded similar results, corroborating the reliability of the findings. The decrease of TB prevalence in the central-western and eastern regions was more rapid than that in the overall TB prevalence. A spatial correlation analysis showed spatial clustering of the TB prevalence from 2011 to 2014 (Moran's index > 0, P < 0.05); in the spatial panel data model, rural residence, birth rate, number of beds, population density, precipitation, air pressure, and sunshine duration were associated with the TB prevalence. CONCLUSIONS: The overall TB prevalence in Inner Mongolia decreased from 2010 to 2014; however, the incidence of TB was high throughout this period. The TB prevalence was influenced by a spatiotemporal interaction effect and was associated with epidemiological, healthcare, and environmental factors.

The purpose of our study was to test the hypothesis that sorafenib-related dermatologic adverse events (AEs) as an early biomarker can predict the long-term outcomes following the combination therapy of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) plus sorafenib (TACE-S). The intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma patients who received either TACE-S or TACE-alone treatment were consecutively included into analysis. In the TACE-S group, patients with ≥ grade 2 dermatologic AEs within the first month of sorafenib initiation were defined as responders; whereas those with < grade 2 were defined as nonresponders. In the TACE-S group, the median overall survival (OS) of the responders was significantly longer than that of nonresponders (28.9 months vs. 16.8 months, respectively; p = 0.004). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that nonresponders were significantly associated with an increased risk of death compared with responders (HR = 1.9; 95% confidence Interval-CI: 1.3-2.7; p = 0.001). The survival analysis showed that the median OS was 27.9 months (95% CI: 25.0-30.8) among responders treated with TACE-S vs.18.3 months (95% CI: 14.5-22.1) among those who received TACE-alone (p = 0.046). The median time to progression was 13.1 months (95% CI: 4.4-21.8) in the TACE-S group, a duration that was significantly longer than that in the TACE-alone group [5 months (95% CI: 6.4-13.3), p = 0.014]. This study demonstrated that sorafenib-related dermatologic AEs are clinical biomarkers to identify responders from all of the patients for TACE-S therapy. Sorafenib-related dermatologic AEs, clinical biomarkers, can predict the efficacy of TACE-S in future randomized controlled trials.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of myeloid-related protein complex 8/14 (MRP8/14) in septic patients in intensive care units. METHODS: Fifty-three cases of healthy people, 72 cases of systemic inflammatory response syndrome patients, 74 cases of sepsis patients, 78 cases of severe sepsis patients, and 76 cases of septic shock patients were enrolled in our hospital. Serum MRP8/14 was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and Mortality in Emergency Department Sepsis (MEDS) score was calculated at enrollment. The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to analyze the diagnostic value of MRP8/14 for sepsis. The prognostic values of MRP8/14 were compared with MEDS score. A 28-day follow-up was performed for all patients. RESULTS: Serum MRP8/14 level of control group, systemic inflammatory response syndrome group, sepsis group, severe sepsis group, and septic shock group was (834.135 ± 251.662), (2343.213 ± 901.850), (3163.617 ± 912.821), (3941.326 ± 850.490), and (4131.326 ± 950.439) ng/mL, respectively. Myeloid-related protein complex 8/14 level increased with sepsis severity. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves of MRP8/14 for sepsis was 0.901 (95% confidence interval, 0.852-0.942).The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves of MRP8/14 was greater than that of MEDS score in predicting 28-day mortality. Serum MRP8/14 level was significantly higher in nonsurvivors than survivors at 28 days' follow-up. In addition, the level of MRP8/14 was much higher in septic patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) than those without AKI. CONCLUSIONS: Myeloid-related protein complex 8/14 is valuable for diagnosis and prognostication of sepsis and septic patients with AKI in the intensive care unit.

Dynamical downscaling is vital for generating finer-scale climate projections. Recently, a set of simulations under four types of 1.5/2 °C global warming scenarios are available with Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology Earth System Model (NESM). However, NESM3's bias in large-scale driving variables would degrade downscaled simulations. We corrected NESM3 bias in terms of climate mean and inter-annual variance against ERA5 using a novel bias correction method and then produced a set of bias-corrected datasets for dynamical downscaling. The bias-corrected NESM3 spans the historical period for 1979-2014 and four future scenarios (i.e., 1.5 °C overshoot for 2070-2100, stabilized 1.5/2 °C for 2070-2100, and transient 2 °C for 2031-2061) with 1.25° × 1.25° horizontal resolution at six-hourly intervals. Our evaluation suggests that bias-corrected NESM3 outperforms the original NESM3 in the climatological mean of seasonal mean and variability, as well as climate extreme events during the historical period. This bias-corrected dataset is expected to generate more reliable projections for regional climate and environment under 1.5/2 °C global warming.

Pneumatic tactile displays dynamically customize surface morphological features with reconfigurable arrays of independently addressable actuators. However, their ability to render detailed tactile patterns or fine textures is limited by the low spatial resolution. For pneumatic tactile displays, the high-density integration of pneumatic actuators within a small space (fingertip) poses a significant challenge in terms of pneumatic circuit wiring. In contrast to the structure with a single-layer layout of pipes, we propose a multi-layered stacked microfluidic pipe structure that allows for a higher density of actuators and retains their independent actuation capabilities. Based on the proposed structure, we developed a soft microfluidic tactile display with a spatial resolution of 1.25 mm. The device consists of a 5 × 5 array of independently addressable microactuators, driven by pneumatic pressure, each of which enables independent actuation of the surface film and continuous control of the height. At a relative pressure of 1000 mbar, the actuator produced a perceptible out-of-plane deformation of 0.145 mm and a force of 17.7 mN. User studies showed that subjects can easily distinguish eight tactile patterns with 96% accuracy.

OBJECTIVE: Respiratory regulation is critical for patients with respiratory dysfunction. Clinically used ventilators can lead to long-term dependence and injury. Extracorporeal assistance approaches such as iron-lung devices provide a noninvasive alternative, however, artificial actuator counterparts have not achieved marvelous biomimetic ventilation as human respiratory muscles. Here, we propose a bionic soft exoskeleton robot that can achieve extracorporeal closed-loop respiratory regulation by emulating natural human breath. METHODS: For inspiration, a soft vacuum chamber is actuated to produce negative thoracic pressure and thus expand lung volume by pulling the rib cage up and outward through use of external negative pressure. For expiration, a soft origami array under positive pressure pushes the abdominal muscles inward and the diaphragm upward. To achieve in vitro measurement of respiratory profile, we describe a wireless respiratory monitoring device to measure respiratory profiles with high accuracy, validated by quantitative comparisons with spirometer as gold-standard reference. By constructing a human-robot coupled respiratory mechanical model, a model-based proportional controller is designed for continuous tracking of the target respiratory profile. RESULTS: In experiments with ten healthy participants and ten patients with respiratory difficulty, the robot can adjust its assistive forces in real time and drive human-robot coupling respiratory system to track the target profile. CONCLUSION: The biomimetic robot can achieve extracorporeal closed-loop respiratory regulation for a diverse population. SIGNIFICANCE: The soft robot has important potential to assist respiration for people with respiratory difficulty, whether in a hospital or a home setting.

The glutathione S-transferases (GSTs, EC 2.5.1.18) constitute a versatile enzyme family with pivotal roles in plant stress responses and detoxification processes. Recent discoveries attributed the additional function of facilitating anthocyanin intracellular transportation in plants to GSTs. Our study identified 178 VcGST genes from 12 distinct subfamilies in the blueberry genome. An uneven distribution was observed among these genes across blueberry's chromosomes. Members within the same subfamily displayed homogeneity in gene structure and conserved protein motifs, whereas marked divergence was noted among subfamilies. Functional annotations revealed that VcGSTs were significantly enriched in several gene ontology and KEGG pathway categories. Promoter regions of VcGST genes predominantly contain light-responsive, MYB-binding, and stress-responsive elements. The majority of VcGST genes are subject to purifying selection, with whole-genome duplication or segmental duplication serving as key processes that drive the expansion of the VcGST gene family. Notably, during the ripening of the blueberry fruit, 100 VcGST genes were highly expressed, and the expression patterns of 24 of these genes demonstrated a strong correlation with the dynamic content of fruit anthocyanins. Further analysis identified VcGSTF8, VcGSTF20, and VcGSTF22 as prime candidates of VcGST genes involved in the anthocyanin intracellular transport. This study provides a reference for the exploration of anthocyanin intracellular transport mechanisms and paves the way for investigating the spectrum of GST functions in blueberries.

Mercury (Hg), a potent neurotoxin posing risks to human health, is cycled through vegetation uptake, which is susceptible to climate change impacts. However, the extent and pattern of these impacts are largely unknown, obstructing predictions of Hg's fate in terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we evaluate the effects of climate change on vegetation elemental Hg [Hg(0)] uptake using a state-of-the-art global terrestrial Hg model (CLM5-Hg) that incorporates plant physiology. In a business-as-usual scenario, the terrestrial Hg(0) sink is predicted to decrease by 1870 Mg yr-1 in 2100, that is ~60% lower than the present-day condition. We find a potential decoupling between the trends of CO2 assimilation and Hg(0) uptake process by vegetation in the 21st century, caused by the decreased stomatal conductance with increasing CO2. This implies a substantial influx of Hg into aquatic ecosystems, posing an elevated threat that warrants consideration during the evaluation of the effectiveness of the Minamata Convention.

The fluorescent components of chromophoric dissolved matter (CDOM) in water samples collected from Xiamen Bay in spring and autumn, 2009 were examined using excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis (EEMs-PARAFAC). PARAFAC decomposed the fluorescence matrices of CDOM into three humic-like (C1: 250, 345/454 nm; C2: 230, 310/374 nm; C5: 265, 424/478 nm) and two protein-like (C3: 230/342 nm; C4: 230, 275/322 nm) components. Good linear correlation occurred among three humic-like components and between two protein-like components, respectively. This demonstrated that the same types of components (humic-like or protein-like) have similar origin and geochemical behaviors. High abundances of humic-like components were found at the upstream zone of the Jiulong Estuary, while the high abundance of protein-like components occurred at the northern part of semi-enclosed Western Xiamen Harbor. The significant negative correlations were found between the abundances of all fluorescence components and salinity in the estuary area. However, the high contents of chlorophyll a were in line with the high abundances of C3 and C4 in non-estuarine area, which implies that phytoplankton activity could be another important source of protein-like components besides the river runoff. A principal component analysis(PCA) of fluorescent components revealed that terrestrial runoff was the dominant sources of CDOM fluorescence components in Xiamen Bay, while the contribution of the in situ biological processes was relatively lower. This study demonstrates that the combination use of PARAFAC modeling and chemometrics (i. e. PCA) is very useful in identifying the origin of CDOM and quantifying the primary factors influencing their distributions.
