RESUMEN

From protein motifs1 to black holes2, topological solitons are pervasive nonlinear excitations that are robust and can be driven by external fields3. So far, existing driving mechanisms all accelerate solitons and antisolitons in opposite directions3,4. Here we introduce a local driving mechanism for solitons that accelerates both solitons and antisolitons in the same direction instead: non-reciprocal driving. To realize this mechanism, we construct an active mechanical metamaterial consisting of non-reciprocally coupled oscillators5-8 subject to a bistable potential9-14. We find that such nonlinearity coaxes non-reciprocal excitations-so-called non-Hermitian skin waves5-8,15-22, which are typically unstable-into robust one-way (anti)solitons. We harness such non-reciprocal topological solitons by constructing an active waveguide capable of transmitting and filtering unidirectional information. Finally, we illustrate this mechanism in another class of metamaterials that shows the breaking of 'supersymmetry'23,24 causing only antisolitons to be driven. Our observations and models demonstrate a subtle interplay between non-reciprocity and topological solitons, whereby solitons create their own driving force by locally straining the material. Beyond the scope of our study, non-reciprocal solitons might provide an efficient driving mechanism for robotic locomotion25 and could emerge in other settings, for example, quantum mechanics26,27, optics28-30 and soft matter31.

From atomic crystals to animal flocks, the emergence of order in nature is captured by the concept of spontaneous symmetry breaking1-4. However, this cornerstone of physics is challenged when broken symmetry phases are frustrated by geometrical constraints. Such frustration dictates the behaviour of systems as diverse as spin ices5-8, confined colloidal suspensions9 and crumpled paper sheets10. These systems typically exhibit strongly degenerated and heterogeneous ground states and hence escape the Ginzburg-Landau paradigm of phase ordering. Here, combining experiments, simulations and theory we uncover an unanticipated form of topological order in globally frustrated matter: non-orientable order. We demonstrate this concept by designing globally frustrated metamaterials that spontaneously break a discrete [Formula: see text] symmetry. We observe that their equilibria are necessarily heteregeneous and extensively degenerated. We explain our observations by generalizing the theory of elasticity to non-orientable order-parameter bundles. We show that non-orientable equilibria are extensively degenerated due to the arbitrary location of topologically protected nodes and lines where the order parameter must vanish. We further show that non-orientable order applies more broadly to objects that are non-orientable themselves, such as buckled Möbius strips and Klein bottles. Finally, by applying time-dependent local perturbations to metamaterials with non-orientable order, we engineer topologically protected mechanical memories11-19, achieve non-commutative responses and show that they carry an imprint of the braiding of the loads' trajectories. Beyond mechanics, we envision non-orientability as a robust design principle for metamaterials that can effectively store information across scales, in fields as diverse as colloidal science8, photonics20, magnetism7 and atomic physics21.

Topological materials can host edge and corner states that are protected from disorder and material imperfections. In particular, the topological edge states of mechanical structures present unmatched opportunities for achieving robust responses in wave guiding, sensing, computation, and filtering. However, determining whether a mechanical structure is topologically nontrivial and features topologically protected modes has hitherto relied on theoretical models. This strong requirement has limited the experimental and practical significance of topological mechanics to laboratory demonstrations. Here, we introduce and validate an experimental method to detect the topologically protected zero modes of mechanical structures without resorting to any modeling step. Our practical method is based on a simple electrostatic analogy: Topological zero modes are akin to electric charges. To detect them, we identify elementary mechanical molecules and measure their chiral polarization, a recently introduced marker of topology in chiral phases. Topological zero modes are then identified as singularities of the polarization field. Our method readily applies to any mechanical structure and effectively detects the edge and corner states of regular and higher-order topological insulators. Our findings extend the reach of chiral topological phases beyond designer materials and allow their direct experimental investigation.

BACKGROUND: The pituitary directly regulates the reproductive process through follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). Transcriptomic research on the pituitaries of ewes with different FecB (fecundity Booroola) genotypes has shown that some key genes and lncRNAs play an important role in pituitary function and sheep fecundity. Our previous study found that ewes with FecB + + genotypes (without FecB mutation) still had individuals with more than one offspring per birth. It is hoped to analyze this phenomenon from the perspective of the pituitary transcriptome. RESULTS: The 12 Small Tail Han Sheep were equally divided into polytocous sheep in the follicular phase (PF), polytocous sheep in the luteal phase (PL), monotocous sheep in the follicular phase (MF), and monotocous sheep in the luteal phase (ML). Pituitary tissues were collected after estrus synchronous treatment for transcriptomic analysis. A total of 384 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (182 in PF vs. MF and 202 in PL vs. ML) and 844 differentially expressed lncRNAs (DELs) (427 in PF vs. MF and 417 in PL vs. ML) were obtained from the polytocous-monotocous comparison groups in the two phases. Functional enrichment analysis showed that the DEGs in the two phases were enriched in signaling pathways known to play an important role in sheep fecundity, such as calcium ion binding and cAMP signaling pathways. A total of 1322 target relationship pairs (551 pairs in PF vs. MF and 771 pairs in PL vs. ML) were obtained for the target genes prediction of DELs, of which 29 DEL-DEG target relationship pairs (nine pairs in PF vs. MF and twenty pairs in PL vs. ML). In addition, the competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks were constructed to explore the regulatory relationships of DEGs, and some important regulatory relationship pairs were obtained. CONCLUSION: According to the analysis results, we hypothesized that the pituitary first receives steroid hormone signals from the ovary and uterus and that VAV3 (Vav Guanine Nucleotide Exchange Factor 3), GABRG1 (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid A Receptor, Gamma 1), and FNDC1 (Fibronectin Type III Domain Containing 1) played an important role in this process. Subsequently, the reproductive process was regulated by gonadotropins, and IGFBP1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein 1) was directly involved in this process, ultimately affecting litter size. In addition, TGIF1 (Transforming Growth Factor-Beta-Induced Factor 1) and TMEFF2 (Transmembrane Protein With EGF Like And Two Follistatin Like Domains 2) compensated for the effect of the FecB mutation and function by acting on TGF-ß/SMAD signaling pathway, an important pathway for sheep reproduction. These results provided a reference for understanding the mechanism of multiple births in Small Tail Han Sheep without FecB mutation.

BACKGROUND: The relationships among left heart remodeling, cardiac function, and cardiovascular events (CEs) in patients with heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) remain unclear. We evaluated the echocardiographic characteristics and clinical outcomes of such patients with diverse left ventricular geometric (LVG) configurations. METHODS: Overall, 210 patients with HFpEF undergoing MHD (cases) and 60 healthy controls were enrolled. Cases were divided into four subgroups based on LVG and were followed up for three years. The primary outcomes were the first CEs and all-cause mortality. RESULTS: Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and right ventricular systolic function did significantly differ between cases and controls, whereas echocardiographic parameters of cardiac structure, diastolic function, and left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LVGLS) differed significantly. The proportion of cases with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) was 67.1%. In addition, 2.38%, 21.90%, 12.86%, and 62.86% of cases presented with normal geometry (NG), concentric remodeling (CR), eccentric hypertrophy (EH), and concentric hypertrophy (CH), respectively. The left atrial diameter (LAD) was the largest and cardiac output index was the lowest in the EH subgroup. The score of Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative Workgroup (ADQI) HF class was worse in the EH subgroup than in other subgroups at baseline. The proportions of cases free of adverse CEs in the EH subgroup at 12, 24, and 36 months were 40.2%, 14.8%, and 0%, respectively, and the survival rates were 85.2%, 29.6%, 3.7%, respectively, which were significantly lower than those in other subgroups. Multivariate Cox regression revealed that age, TNI (Troponin I), EH, left ventricular mass index (LVMI), age and EH configuration were independent risk factors for adverse CEs and all-cause mortality in the cases. CONCLUSION: Most patients with HFpEF receiving MHD have LVH and diastolic dysfunction. Among the four LVGs, patients with HFpEF undergoing MHD who exhibited EH had the highest risk of adverse CEs and all-cause mortality.

Cardiac fibrosis is a pathological scarring process that impairs cardiac function. N-acetyltransferase 10 (Nat10) is recently identified as the key enzyme for the N4-acetylcytidine (ac4C) modification of mRNAs. In this study, we investigated the role of Nat10 in cardiac fibrosis following myocardial infarction (MI) and the related mechanisms. MI was induced in mice by ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery; cardiac function was assessed with echocardiography. We showed that both the mRNA and protein expression levels of Nat10 were significantly increased in the infarct zone and border zone 4 weeks post-MI, and the expression of Nat10 in cardiac fibroblasts was significantly higher compared with that in cardiomyocytes after MI. Fibroblast-specific overexpression of Nat10 promoted collagen deposition and induced cardiac systolic dysfunction post-MI in mice. Conversely, fibroblast-specific knockout of Nat10 markedly relieved cardiac function impairment and extracellular matrix remodeling following MI. We then conducted ac4C-RNA binding protein immunoprecipitation-sequencing (RIP-seq) in cardiac fibroblasts transfected with Nat10 siRNA, and revealed that angiomotin-like 1 (Amotl1), an upstream regulator of the Hippo signaling pathway, was the target gene of Nat10. We demonstrated that Nat10-mediated ac4C modification of Amotl1 increased its mRNA stability and translation in neonatal cardiac fibroblasts, thereby increasing the interaction of Amotl1 with yes-associated protein 1 (Yap) and facilitating Yap translocation into the nucleus. Intriguingly, silencing of Amotl1 or Yap, as well as treatment with verteporfin, a selective and potent Yap inhibitor, attenuated the Nat10 overexpression-induced proliferation of cardiac fibroblasts and prevented their differentiation into myofibroblasts in vitro. In conclusion, this study highlights Nat10 as a crucial regulator of myocardial fibrosis following MI injury through ac4C modification of upstream activators within the Hippo/Yap signaling pathway.

Whole grains (WGs) may have various health benefits, including lowering blood glucose and improving insulin sensitivity. To conduct a meta-analysis of the effects of WGs compared with non-WGs on changes in fasting glucose, fasting insulin, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). A systematic literature search was performed for all published randomized controlled trials on the effects of WG intake on fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HbA1c and HOMA-IR response up to February 2021. Weighted mean differences (WMD) were calculated. Pre-specified subgroup and univariate meta-regression analyses were explored to identify the sources of heterogeneity. Sensitivity analysis and bias analysis were conducted to appraise study quality. Among 12,435 articles screened for eligibility, data were extracted from 48 articles. Meta-analysis of 4,118 participants showed that WG consumption resulted in a significant reduction in fasting glucose by -0.15 mmol/L, fasting insulin by -2.71 pmol/L, HbA1c by -0.44%, and HOMA-IR by -0.28, respectively. Compared with mixed grains, brown rice, and wheat, oats were significantly lower on marker of glycemic. Besides, multiple interventions per day consolidated effectiveness of WGs. WG consumption decreased the levels of fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HbA1c, and HOMA-IR compared with non-WG consumption.Supplemental data for this article is available online at https://doi.org/10.1080/10408398.2021.2001429 .

Ecosystem vulnerability is an ecological response of the environment to external damage. Studying the influencing factors and spatiotemporal changes of ecosystem vulnerability is helpful to maintain ecological balance. At present, studies on ecosystem vulnerability are relatively homogeneous and rarely integrate climate change and human activities. Based on a habitat-function framework, this study analyzed the response of ecosystem vulnerability on climate change and human activities in the Poyang Lake City Group (PLCG) in 2010, 2015 and 2020. The spatial agglomeration of ecosystem vulnerability has been analyzed by using GeoDa model. The interaction of factors on ecosystem vulnerability have been analyzed by using geographical detector. It can be seen that the ecosystem vulnerability of the PLCG have increased from 2010 to 2020. The impacts of climate change to the ecosystem vulnerability have showed a positive correlation. Meanwhile, the key factors leading to the change of ecological vulnerability are still human activities. This methodology demonstrates a high level of robustness when applied to other research domains. This research is conducive to maintaining the integrity of the ecosystem, realizing the development of man and nature, and promoting the sound and rapid development of economic society.

Epidemiological studies have shown that higher intake of flavonoid is inversely associated with CHD risk. However, which flavonoid subclass could reduce CHD risk has remained controversial. The present meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies aimed to quantitatively assess the associations between flavonoid subclasses and CHD risk. A systematic literature search was implemented from PubMed and Web of Science databases up to March 2021, and eligible studies were identified. Multivariate-adjust relative risks (RR) with corresponding 95 % CI were pooled by using a random-effects model. A restricted cubic spline regression model was performed for non-linear dose-response analysis. A total of 19 independent prospective cohort studies with 894 471 participants and 34 707 events were included. The results showed that dietary intakes of anthocyanins (RR = 0·90; 95 % CI: 0·83, 0·98), proanthocyanidins (RR = 0·78; 95 % CI: 0·65, 0·94), flavonols (RR = 0·88; 95 % CI: 0·79, 0·98), flavones (RR = 0·94; 95 % CI: 0·89, 0·99) and isoflavones (RR = 0·90; 95 % CI: 0·83, 0·98) were negatively associated with CHD risk. Dose-response analysis showed that increment of 50 mg/d anthocyanins, 100 mg/d proanthocyanidins, 25 mg/d flavonols, 5 mg/d flavones and 0·5 mg/d isoflavones were associated with 5 % reduction in CHD risk, respectively. Sensitivity and subgroup analyses were used to further support these associations. The present results indicate that dietary intakes of fruits and vegetables abundant five flavonoid subclasses, namely anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, flavonols, flavones and isoflavones, are associated with a lower risk of CHD.

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to investigate fish oil plus vitamin D3 (FO + D) supplementation on biomarkers of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS: In a 3-month randomized controlled trial, 111 subjects with NAFLD, aged 56.0 ± 15.9 y, were randomized into FO + D group (n = 37), fish oil group (FO, n = 37) or corn oil group (CO, n = 37). The subjects consumed the following capsules (3 g/day), which provided 2.34 g/day of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) + docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) + 1680 IU vitamin D3 (FO + D group), or 2.34 g/day of EPA + DHA (FO group), or 1.70 g/d linoleic acid (CO group). RESULTS: Using multivariable-adjusted general linear model, there were significant net reductions in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and triacylglycerol (TAG) and TNF-α levels in the FO + D and FO groups, compared with the control group (P < 0.05). The supplemental FO + D also showed significant reductions in insulin (- 1.58 ± 2.00 mU/L vs. - 0.63 ± 1.55 mU/L, P = 0.050) and IL-1ß (- 6.92 ± 7.29 ng/L vs. 1.06 ± 5.83 ng/L, P < 0.001) in comparison with control group. Although there were no significant differences between FO + D and FO groups regarding biochemical parameters, supplemental FO + D showed decreases in ALT (from 26.2 ± 13.5 U/L to 21.4 ± 9.6 U/L, P = 0.007), aspartate aminotransferase (AST, from 22.5 ± 7.0 U/L to 20.2 ± 4.0 U/L, P = 0.029), HOMA-IR (from 3.69 ± 1.22 to 3.38 ± 1.10, P = 0.047), and TNF-α (from 0.43 ± 0.38 ng/L to 0.25 ± 0.42 ng/L, P < 0.001) levels following the intervention. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated that groups supplemented with FO + D and FO had similar beneficial effects on biomarkers of hepatocellular damage and plasma TAG levels in subjects with NAFLD, while in the FO + D group, there were some suggestive additional benefits compared with FO group on insulin levels and inflammation. Epidemiological studies indicate that higher intakes of flavonoids are associated with reduced stroke risk, however, which subtypes play significant roles to protect against stroke remain unclear. A systematic literature search in PubMed and Web of Science databases was performed up to Oct. 2021. Flavonoids or their subtypes (flavanol, flavanone, flavone, flavan-3-ol, isoflavone, or anthocyanin) were paired with stoke as the search term. Multivariate-adjusted relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the highest versus the lowest category were pooled by using a random-effects model. Dose-response analysis was implemented by using a restricted cubic spline regression model. Ten independent prospective cohort studies with 387,076 participants and 9,564 events were included. Higher intakes of flavanones were inversely associated with stroke risk (RR = 0.85; 95%CI: 0.78, 0.93). Dose-response analysis showed that 50 mg/day increment of flavanones was associated with 11% reduction in stroke risk (RR = 0.89; 95%CI: 0.84, 0.94). Flavan-3-ols was marginally inversely associated with stroke risk (RR = 0.92; 95%CI: 0.82, 1.02). Dose-response analysis showed that 200 mg/day increment of flavan-3-ols was associated with 14% reduction in stroke risk (RR = 0.86; 95%CI: 0.75, 0.98). The non-significant association was observed with respect to other flavonoid subclasses. This study demonstrated higher intakes of flavanones and flavan-3-ols were associated with a lower risk of stroke. Dietary intakes of lemon and citrus rich in flavanones and flavan-3-ols might have beneficial functions for the protection against stroke. The findings of these associations of the present study need to be confirmed in other regions and ethnic origins.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to investigate the hypothesis that dietary amino acid intakes are associated with the risk of sarcopenia through a community-based observational study. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: A total of 1,140 participants (72.7±6.3 y) were recruited from an annual health check-up program in Qingdao, China. Skeletal muscle mass, muscle mass functions and biochemical parameters were measured by standard methods. Dietary intake was assessed by 3-day, 24-hour food records. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of sarcopenic risk across quartiles of amino acid intakes were calculated using a multivariable- adjusted logistic regression model. Generalized linear models were used to assess the associations between dietary amino acid intakes and muscle mass functions. RESULTS: The prevalence of sarcopenia was 4.1%. Compared with the lowest category intake, the highest category of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) (OR=0.11; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.90; p for trend=0.119), isoleucine (OR=0.11; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.89; p for trend=0.122) and tryptophan (OR=0.10; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.87; p for trend=0.176) was negatively correlated with sarcopenic risk with adjustment for potential confounding factors. Generalized linear model analysis showed that gait speed was positively correlated with dietary intakes of lysine, threonine, leucine, valine, tryptophan, BCAAs and aromatic amino acids (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Higher intakes of BCAAs were associated with a lower risk of sarcopenia, which might beneficially protect against sarcopenia and improve physical function of the elderly.

To investigate the effect of ALA intake on blood lipid profiles, including triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL-C) and ratio of TC to HDL-C. We systematically searched randomized controlled trials of ALA intervention on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library and related references up to March 2018. The final values were calculated as weighted mean difference (WMD) by using a random effects model. Subgroup analysis and meta-regression were used to explore the source of heterogeneity. Generalized least square was performed for dose-response analysis. Forty-seven studies with 1305 individuals in the ALA arm and 1325 individuals in the control arm were identified. Compared with control group, dietary intake of ALA significantly reduced the concentrations of TG (WMD -0.101 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.158 to -0.044 mmol/L; P = 0.001), TC (WMD -0.140 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.224 to -0.056 mmol/L; P = 0.001), LDL-C (WMD -0.131 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.191 to -0.071 mmol/L; P < 0.001), VLDL-C (WMD -0.121 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.170 to -0.073 mmol/L; P < 0.001), TC/HDL-C ratio (WMD -0.165 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.317 to -0.013 mmol/L; P = 0.033) and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio (WMD -0.158 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.291 to -0.025 mmol/L; P = 0.02). There is no effect of ALA intake on HDL-C (WMD 0.008 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.018 to 0.034 mmol/L; P = 0.541). Dose-response analysis indicated that 1 g per day increment of ALA was associated with a 0.0016 mmol/L, 0.0071 mmol/L, 0.0015 and 0.0061 mmol/L reduction in TG (95% CI: -0.0029 to -0.0002 mmol/L), TC (95% CI: -0.0085 to -0.0058 mmol/L), HDL-C (95% CI: -0.0020 to -0.0011 mmol/L) and LDL-C (95% CI: -0.0073 to -0.0049 mmol/L) levels, respectively. The effects of ALA intake on TG, TC and LDL-C concentrations were more obvious among Asian participants, and also more obvious on patients with hyperlipidemia or hyperglycemia compared to healthy individuals. Dietary ALA intervention improves blood lipid profiles by decreasing levels of TG, TC, LDL and VLDL-C. Our findings add to the evidence that increasing ALA intake could potentially prevent risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Utilizing the unique gate induced giant stark effect in few-layer black phosphorus (BP), we theoretically propose a broadband photodetector device based on pure few-layer BP using atomic first-principles calculations. By applying a vertical gate voltage in the few-layer BP, the intrinsic inversion symmetry of the system can be broken. We found that the photocurrent can be generated via the photogalvanic (or photovoltaic) effect (PGE) without the need for an external bias voltage, which means the gated few-layer BP photodetector is self-powered and the dark current can be greatly suppressed. Most importantly, due to the giant stark effect of the gated few-layer BP, the photodetection range can be well controlled and further enlarged from the mid-infrared range (MIR) to the far-infrared range (FIR). Furthermore, the few-layer BP based photodetector device also presents high polarization sensitivity with extinction ratios up to 104 and a large anisotropic photoresponse. Our numerical findings pave a feasible way for the few-layer BP's novel application in self-powered and well-controlled broadband photodetectors.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between dietary nut intake and hyperuricemia risk remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between different nut intake and hyperuricemia risk with a cross-sectional study. DESIGN: A semi-quantitative FFQ was adopted to collect dietary information. Biochemical and anthropometric parameters were measured by standard methods. Multivariate-adjusted logistic regression models were implemented to analyse the relationship between individual nut intake and hyperuricemia risk. SETTING: Qingdao University in Shandong Province, China. PARTICIPANTS: During 2018-2019, a total of 14 056 undergraduates (6862 males and 7194 females) aged 15-25 years participated in the study. RESULTS: After adjusting for multiple confounding factors, compared with the lowest quartile, the highest quartile intakes of pine nut (95 % CI (0·51, 0·98)) was significantly associated with 29 % reduction in hyperuricemia risk, the highest quartile intake of walnut (OR = 0·78; 95 % CI (0·58, 1·05)) was marginally negatively associated with hyperuricemia risk. CONCLUSIONS: The present study showed that the relationships between intakes of different nuts and hyperuricemia risk were different. Increased dietary intakes of walnut and pine nut are negatively associated with the hyperuricemia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: As an endocrine organ, the mass of skeletal muscle is closely related to human health. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between regional skeletal muscle and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Chinese elders. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: A total of 1,328 participants (579 males and 749 females), aged 65 to 96 years were recruited between March to November 2020 in Qingdao, China. Of these, 400 cases and 400 healthy controls, matched by gender and age (±3 years), were included in the study. Skeletal muscle mass was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis, and body weight was adopted to standardize skeletal muscle mass to obtain skeletal muscle mass indexes. RESULTS: Inverse associations were observed for trunk muscle mass index (TMI) (OR=0.42; 95% CI: 0.19, 0.93; p for trend=0.083) and leg skeletal muscle mass index (LMI) (OR=0.41; 95% CI: 0.18, 0.97; p for trend=0.012) with NAFLD risk after adjustment for age, body mass index, glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, dietary intakes of energy, carbohydrate, protein and fat, smoking, alcohol drinking, education and physical activity. Dose-response analysis indicated that per standard deviation increment of LMI was associated with 23% (95%CI: 0.63, 0.95) reduction of NAFLD risk. CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrates that higher TMI and LMI are associated with a lower NAFLD risk.

AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to assess the cerebral voxel-based and surface-based morphological abnormalities of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 100 healthy adults and 73 patients with TLE were enrolled in this study, and their 3D T1-weighted MRI data were collected. Voxel-based morphology (VBM) and surface-based morphology (SBM) tools were used to compare the morphological differences between healthy adults and patients with TLE. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to acquire the boundary values for detecting morphological abnormalities in regions of interest from the corrected VBM and SBM analysis. RESULTS: Our results showed that cortical voxels and decreased thickness areas were located in the widespread cortex and subcortical structures in the TLE group. However, after completing the analysis, we found that the left-TLE lesions were limited to the left temporal pole and left hippocampus, while the right-TLE lesions were located in the bilateral medial temporal lobe, including the right hippocampus and bilateral amygdala. ROC-curve results showed that the volume of the left hippocampus at 4,124.45 mm3 and the thickness of the left temporal pole cortex at 3.50 mm could be used as optimal boundary values based on the curves of the left-TLE group. The right-TLE group curves were poor. CONCLUSIONS: Widespread cerebral morphological TLE abnormalities were represented in this study. However, the lesions may be limited after completing a corrected comparison with clinical information. Boundary values of left-TLE group lesions were also obtained.

Mesopolymers with high solubility, free of structural defects, and negligible batch-to-batch variation open a new avenue for organic optoelectronics. Organic light emitting transistors that combine the functions of organic light-emitting diodes and organic field-effect transistors. However, charge transport ability and light emitting strength are contradictory within one conjugated polymer. Herein, three low-molecular-weight mesopolymers with thienopyrroledione-benzothiadiazole repeating units (meso-TBTF) were obtained. The mesopolymers show strong solid-state emission and high ambipolar carrier mobility. The molecular weights of meso-TBTF can be tuned by polymerization temperature. The mesopolymers have photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) of about 50 % in solution and 10 % in solid state. Polymer light emitting diodes of this material are fabricated to explore its potential use in optoelectronic devices.

BACKGROUND: The early life risk factors of childhood obesity among preterm infants are unclear and little is known about the influence of the feeding practices. We aimed to identify early life risk factors for childhood overweight/obesity among preterm infants and to determine feeding practices that could modify the identified risk factors. METHODS: A total of 338,413 mother-child pairs were enrolled in the Jiaxing Birth Cohort (1999 to 2013), and 2125 eligible singleton preterm born children were included for analyses. We obtained data on health examination, anthropometric measurement, lifestyle, and dietary habits of each participant at their visits to clinics. An interpretable machine learning-based analytic framework was used to identify early life predictors for childhood overweight/obesity, and Poisson regression was used to examine the associations between feeding practices and the identified leading predictor. RESULTS: Of the eligible 2125 preterm infants (863 [40.6%] girls), 274 (12.9%) developed overweight/obesity at age 4-7 years. We summarized early life variables into 25 features and identified two most important features as predictors for childhood overweight/obesity: trajectory of infant BMI (body mass index) Z-score change during the first year of corrected age and maternal BMI at enrollment. According to the impacts of different BMI Z-score trajectories on the outcome, we classified this feature into the favored and unfavored trajectories. Compared with early introduction of solid foods (≤ 3 months of corrected age), introducing solid foods after 6 months of corrected age was significantly associated with 11% lower risk (risk ratio, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.82 to 0.97) of being in the unfavored trajectory. CONCLUSIONS: The trajectory of BMI Z-score change within the first year of life is the most important predictor for childhood overweight/obesity among preterm infants. Introducing solid foods after 6 months of corrected age is a recommended feeding practice for mitigating the risk of being in the unfavored trajectory.

BACKGROUND: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) can play important roles in uterine and ovarian functions. However, little researches have been done on the role of lncRNAs in the adrenal gland of sheep. Herein, RNA sequencing was used to compare and analyze gene expressions in adrenal tissues between follicular phases and luteal phases in FecBBB (MM) and FecB++ (WW) sheep, respectively, and differentially expressed lncRNAs and genes associated with reproduction were identified. RESULTS: In MM sheep, 38 lncRNAs and 545 mRNAs were differentially expressed in the adrenal gland between the luteal and follicular phases; In WW sheep, 513 differentially expressed lncRNAs and 2481 mRNAs were identified. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analyses indicated that differentially expressed lncRNAs and their target genes are mainly involved in the circadian rhythm, the mitogen activated protein kinase, thyroid, ovarian steroidogenesis and transforming growth factor beta signaling pathways. Differentially expressed lncRNAs can regulate reproduction by modulating genes involved in these signaling pathways and biological processes. Specifically, XLOC_254761, XLOC_357966, 105,614,839 and XLOC_212877 targeting CREB1, PER3, SMAD1 and TGFBR2, respectively, appear to play key regulatory roles. CONCLUSION: These results broaden our understanding of lncRNAs in adrenal gland of sheep and provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying sheep reproduction.
