RESUMEN

Sound classification has been widely used in many fields. Unlike traditional signal-processing methods, using deep learning technology for sound classification is one of the most feasible and effective methods. However, limited by the quality of the training dataset, such as cost and resource constraints, data imbalance, and data annotation issues, the classification performance is affected. Therefore, we propose a sound classification mechanism based on convolutional neural networks and use the sound feature extraction method of Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) to convert sound signals into spectrograms. Spectrograms are suitable as input for CNN models. To provide the function of data augmentation, we can increase the number of spectrograms by setting the number of triangular bandpass filters. The experimental results show that there are 50 semantic categories in the ESC-50 dataset, the types are complex, and the amount of data is insufficient, resulting in a classification accuracy of only 63%. When using the proposed data augmentation method (K = 5), the accuracy is effectively increased to 97%. Furthermore, in the UrbanSound8K dataset, the amount of data is sufficient, so the classification accuracy can reach 90%, and the classification accuracy can be slightly increased to 92% via data augmentation. However, when only 50% of the training dataset is used, along with data augmentation, the establishment of the training model can be accelerated, and the classification accuracy can reach 91%.

BACKGROUND: Salt pond restoration aims to recover the environmental damages that accumulated over the long history of salt production. Of the restoration strategies, phytoremediation that utilizes salt-tolerant plants and soil microorganisms to reduce the salt concentrations is believed to be environmentally-friendly. However, little is known about the change of bacterial community during salt pond restoration in the context of phytoremediation. In the present study, we used 16S metagenomics to compare seasonal changes of bacterial communities between the revegetated and barren salterns at Sicao, Taiwan. RESULTS: In both saltern types, Proteobacteria, Planctomycetes, Chloroflexi, and Bacteroidetes were predominant at the phylum level. In the revegetated salterns, the soil microbiomes displayed high species diversities and underwent a stepwise transition across seasons. In the barren salterns, the soil microbiomes fluctuated greatly, indicating that mangroves tended to stabilize the soil microorganism communities over the succession. Bacteria in the order Halanaerobiaceae and archaea in the family Halobacteriaceae that were adapted to high salinity exclusively occurred in the barren salterns. Among the 441 persistent operational taxonomic units detected in the revegetated salterns, 387 (87.5%) were present as transient species in the barren salterns. Only 32 persistent bacteria were exclusively detected in the revegetated salterns. Possibly, salt-tolerant plants provided shelters for those new colonizers. CONCLUSIONS: The collective data indicate that revegetation tended to stabilize the microbiome across seasons and enriched the microbial diversity in the salterns, especially species of Planctomycetes and Acidobacteria.

BACKGROUND: Elongin A (ELOA), our previous work revealed, serves as a novel tumor suppressor in colorectal cancer. However, the function and mechanism of ELOA in other cancer types, including gastric cancer (GC), remain to be elucidated. METHODS: The expression of ELOA was measured by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and western blot. The effects of ELOA on GC growth and metastasis were assessed through a series of in-vitro and in-vivo assays. Furthermore, the potential mechanism of ELOA was revealed by RNA sequencing, dual luciferase reporter assay, chromatin immunoprecipitation, and rescue experiments in GC. RESULTS: We uncovered increased expression of ELOA in GC tissues compared with paired normal tissues via bioinformatic analyses and our sample detection. Enhanced ELOA expression in GC tissues was obviously correlated with poor tumor differentiation, lymph node metastasis, advanced tumor stage, and a poor prognosis. A series of functional experiments showed that ELOA promoted the proliferation and metastasis of GC. Mechanistically, we revealed that the decreased levels of miR-490-3p caused the upregulation of ELOA in GC. Both RNA-seq and ChIP assays revealed that ELOA transcriptionally activated retinol-binding protein 1 (RBP1) by binding to its promotor. Furthermore, specific knockdown of RBP1 reduced the tumor-promoting ability of ELOA in GC cells. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, our findings demonstrate that ELOA exerts oncogenic properties by activating RBP1 expression, providing the basis for a promising therapeutic target in GC.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of C-reactive protein (CRP) level on the prognosis of patients with locoregionally advanced laryngeal carcinoma treated with chemoradiotherapy. Fifty-seven patients with locoregionally advanced laryngeal carcinoma (cT3-4, N0-3, M0) treated with chemoradiotherapy were reviewed retrospectively. Chemoradiotherapy comprised external beam radiotherapy to the larynx (70 Gy) with three cycles of cisplatin at 3-week intervals. Elevated CRP was defined as >8 mg/L. The survival rate was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and a multivariate analysis was used to identify significant factors associated with prognosis, using a Cox proportional hazards model. During the median (range) follow-up of 5 years (1.3-5), 29 patients died from laryngeal cancer; the 5-year cancer-specific survival (CSS) rate was 49.12%. Fifteen patients had a high CRP level before chemoradiotherapy (>8 mg/L), and their CSS rate was significantly worse than that in the remaining patients (P = 0.003). Multivariate analysis showed that CRP and tumor site were independent prognostic indicators for CSS, with a hazard ratio of 2.66 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.22-5.82; P = 0.014) and a hazard ratio of 1.67 (95% CI, 1.01-2.77; P = 0.045), respectively. Of those with elevated CRP, the CRP levels of ten patients became normal after chemoradiotherapy, of whom four were alive with no evidence of recurrence or metastasis during the follow-up. By contrast, all six with no CRP normalization after chemoradiotherapy died within 3.8 years. The elevation of CRP before treatment predicts a poor prognosis in patients with locoregionally advanced laryngeal carcinoma treated with chemoradiotherapy.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for prevention of human immunodeficiency virus infection is proved to be effective and has been implemented worldwide. This article introduces the guideline development and revised recommendations and guidance on PrEP provision in the updated Taiwan PrEP guideline. The Taiwan PrEP guideline writing group searched randomized controlled trials and guidelines published before October 2017 through Medline/PubMed, Cochrane Database, Embase and ClinicalTrials.gov database. Keywords included pre(-)exposure prophylaxis, PrEP, Truvada, tenofovir, HIV, and AIDS. Each selected article was assessed by two authors using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation. External reviewers were invited to independently evaluate the revised manuscript per the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II. Before publication, a public consultation was held to reach consensus on the updated guideline among providers, civil society, and Taiwan Centers for Disease Control. Four systematic reviews and 28 original articles were reviewed by Taiwan PrEP writing group. The second version of the Taiwan PrEP guideline was released in March 2018. We recommended daily PrEP use for the following populations: strong recommendation and high quality of evidence for men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW), as well as heterosexual serodiscordant couples; weak recommendation and high quality of evidence for people who inject drugs, while weak recommendation and moderate quality of evidence for at-risk heterosexual men and women. There is high-quality evidence for event-driven PrEP in MSM and likely TGW, and we additionally recognized these key populations could benefit from such dosing regimen.
