RESUMEN

Low-valent nickelates have recently been shown to be key intermediates that facilitate challenging cross-coupling reactions under mild conditions. Expanding the synthetic potential of these heterobimetallic complexes, herein we report the success of trilithium nickelate Li3(TMEDA)3Ni(C≡C-Ph)3 in promoting stoichiometric C-F activation of assorted aryl fluorides furnishing novel mixed Li/Ni(0) or Li/Ni(II) species depending on the substrate and conditions employed. These stoichiometric successes can be upgraded to catalytic regimes to enable the atom-efficient alkynylation of aryl fluorides and polyfluoroarenes with lithium acetylides and precatalyst Ni(COD)2, which operates without the intervention of external ligands, Cu cocatalysts, or additives.

RESUMEN

Recent advances on low valent main group metal chemistry have shown the excellent potential of heterobimetallic complexes derived from Al(I) to promote cooperative small molecule activation processes. A signature feature of these complexes is the use of bulky chelating ligands which act as spectators providing kinetic stabilization to their highly reactive Al-M bonds. Here we report the synthesis of novel Al/Zn bimetallics prepared by the selective formal insertion of AlCp* into the Zn-N bond of the utility zinc amides ZnR2 (R=HMDS, hexamethyldisilazide; or TMP, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide). By systematically assessing the reactivity of the new [(R)(Cp*)AlZn(R)] bimetallics towards carbodiimides, structural and mechanistic insights have been gained on their ability to undergo insertion in their Zn-Al bond. Disclosing a ligand effect, when R=TMP, an isomerization process can be induced giving [(TMP)2AlZn(Cp*)] which displays a special reactivity towards carbodiimides and carbon dioxide involving both its Al-N bonds, leaving its Al-Zn bond untouched.

RESUMEN

Profiting from the dual high basicity and nucleophilicity of organosodium complexes, here we report the stepwise lateral metalation of a wide range of alkyl arenes (MeAr), mediated by hydrocarbon-soluble NaCH2SiMe3 ⋅ PMDETA (PMDETA=N,N,N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine), followed by nucleophilic addition to diarylethenes of the newly generated NaCH2Ar ⋅ PMDETA complexes. This method grants access to a range of functionalised hydrocarbons in excellent yields and can be upgraded to catalytic regimes when using trans-stilbene, a 10 mol% of the alkyl sodium base and toluene as a solvent. Extending this approach to aromatic ketones leads to the formation of stilbenes under mild reaction conditions, resulting from the deprotonative coupling of toluenes with ketones. Combining spectroscopic studies with the trapping and characterisation of key reaction intermediates, mechanistic insights have been gained, advancing the understanding of coordination effects in organosodium chemistry, and shedding light on their special reactivity profiles.

RESUMEN

Recent advances in cooperative chemistry have shown the potential of heterobimetallic complexes combining an alkali-metal with an earth abundant divalent transition metal for the functionalisation of synthetically relevant aromatic molecules via deprotonative metalation. Pairing sodium with cobalt (II), here we provide an overview of the reactivity of bimetallic [NaCo(HMDS)3] [HMDS = N(SiMe3)2] towards C-H and C-F functionalisation of a wide range of perfluorinated molecules. These studies also uncover the enormous potential of this heterobimetallic base to perform Co-H exchanges with excellent selectivity and exceptional stoichiometric control as well as shedding light on the key role played by the alkali-metal.

RESUMEN

With their highly reactive respective C-Na and N-Na bonds, organosodium and sodium amide reagents could be viewed as obvious replacements or even superior reagents to the popular, widely utilised organolithiums. However, they have seen very limited applications in synthesis due mainly to poor solubility in common solvents and their limited stability. That notwithstanding in recent years there has been a surge of interest in bringing these sustainable metal reagents into the forefront of organometallics in synthesis. Showcasing the growth in utilisation of organosodium complexes within several areas of synthetic chemistry, this Minireview discusses promising new methods that have been recently reported with the goal of taming these powerful reagents. Special emphasis is placed on coordination and aggregation effects in these reagents which can impart profound changes in their solubility and reactivity. Differences in observed reactivity between more nucleophilic aryl and alkyl sodium reagents and the less nucleophilic but highly basic sodium amides are discussed along with current mechanistic understanding of their reactivities. Overall, this review aims to inspire growth in this exciting field of research to allow for the integration of organosodium complexes within common important synthetic transformations.

RESUMEN

Typically catalysed by transition metals, alkene isomerisation is a powerful  methodology for preparation of internal olefins. In contrast, the use of more earth abundant main group reagents is limited to activated substrates, requiring high temperatures and excess stoichiometric amounts. Opening a new portal for progressing this field, here we report applications of bulky sodium amide NaTMP (TMP = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide) when partnered by tridentate Lewis donor PMDETA (N,N,N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine) in catalytic alkene isomerisation of terminal olefins under mild reaction conditions. An array of distinct olefins could successfully be isomerised, including unactivated olefins, allylamines and allylethers, showing the high activity of this partnership. In-depth mechanistic insights provided by X-ray crystallography, real-time nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) monitoring, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations have unveiled the crucial role of in-situ-generated TMP(H) in facilitating efficient isomerisation and the choice of alkali-metal. Additionally, theoretical studies shed light on the observed E/Z selectivity, particularly accounting for selective formation of Z-vinyl ethers. The versatility of our method is further demonstrated through isomerisation of unactivated cycloalkenes, which undergo hydrogen isotope exchange to produce deuterated compounds.

RESUMEN

Typified by LiTMP and TMPMgCl.LiCl, (TMP=2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide), s-block metal amides have found widespread applications in arene deprotonative metalation. On the contrary, transition metal amides lack sufficient basicity to activate these substrates. Breaking new ground in this field, here we present the synthesis and full characterisation of earth-abundant transition metals M(TMP)2 (M=Fe, Co). Uncovering a new reactivity profile towards fluoroarenes, these amide complexes can promote direct M-H exchange processes regioselectively using one or two of their basic amide arms. Remarkably, even when using a perfluorinated substrate, selective C-H metalation occurs leaving C-F bonds intact. Their kinetic basicity can be boosted by LiCl or NBu4Cl additives which enables formation of kinetically activated ate species. Combining spectroscopic and structural studies with DFT calculations, mechanistic insights have been gained on how these low polarity metalation processes take place. M(TMP)2 can also be used to access ferrocene and cobaltocene by direct deprotonation of cyclopentadiene and undergo efficient CO2 insertion of both amide groups under mild reaction conditions.

RESUMEN

The Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling of aryl ethers is a powerful synthetic tool to transform widely available phenol derivatives into functionalized aromatic molecules. Recent theoretical and experimental mechanistic studies have identified the involvement of heterobimetallic nickelates as key intermediates that facilitate the challenging transformation under mild conditions and often without the need for external ligands or additives. In this work, based on calculations performed at the density functional theory (DFT) level and by comparison with spectroscopic and kinetic data, we investigate the mechanism of the Ni(COD)2-catalyzed cross-coupling of 2-methoxynaphthalene with PhLi and assess the speciation of lithium nickelate intermediates. The crucial role of solvent on the reaction is explained, and the multiple roles played by lithium are unveiled. Experimental studies have identified key lithium nickelate species which support and help to evolve the calculated reaction mechanism and ultimately complete the catalytic cycle. Based on this new mechanistic knowledge, a well-known experimental challenge of these transformations, the so-called "naphthalene problem" which restricts the use of electrophilic coupling partners to π-extended systems, can be addressed to enable the cross-coupling of unbiased aryl ethers under mild conditions.

RESUMEN

Exploiting bimetallic cooperation alkali-metal manganate (II) complexes can efficiently promote oxidative homocoupling of terminal alkynes furnishing an array of conjugated 1,3-diynes. The influence of the alkali-metal on these C-C bond forming processes has been studied by preparing and structurally characterizing the alkali-metal tetra(alkyl) manganates [(TMEDA)2 Na2 Mn(CH2 SiMe3 )4 ] and [(PMDETA)2 K2 Mn(CH2 SiMe3 )4 ]. Reactivity studies using phenylacetylene as a model substrate have revealed that for the homocoupling to take place initial metalation of the alkyne is required. In this regard, the lack of basicity of neutral Mn(CH2 SiMe3 )2 precludes the formation of the diyne. Contrastingly, the tetra(alkyl) alkali-metal manganates behave as polybasic reagents, being able to easily deprotonate phenylacetylene yielding [{(THF)4 Na2 Mn(C≡CPh)4 }∞ ] and [(THF)4 Li2 Mn(C≡CPh)4 ]. Controlled exposure of [{(THF)4 Na2 Mn(C≡CPh)4 }∞ ] and [(THF)4 Li2 Mn(C≡CPh)4 ] to dry air confirmed their intermediary in formation of 1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiyne in excellent yields. While the Na/Mn(II) partnership proved to be the most efficient in stoichiometric transformations, under catalytic regimes, the combination of MC≡CAr (M= Li, Na) and MnCl2 (6 mol %) only works for lithium, most likely due to the degradation of alkynylsodiums under the aerobic reaction conditions.

RESUMEN

Alkali-metal amides have become key reagents in synthetic chemistry, with special focus in deprotonation reactions. Despite the higher reactivity found in the heavier sodium and potassium amides, their insolubility and low stability has favoured the use of the more soluble  lithium analogues, converting them into the most used non-nucleophilic bases. Studying the coordination effects of Lewis donor molecules such as tridentate amine PMDETA (N,N,N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine) in combination with the sodium amide NaTMP (TMP = 2,2',6,6'-tetramethylpiperidide), we have been able to unlock the use of these reagents for the functionalisation of arenes, i.e. the deuterium incorporation by hydrogen isotope exchange and the deprotonative borylation of unactivated arenes. These findings show how sodium amides are not just a simple more sustainable replacement of their lithium counterparts, but also that they can display significantly enhanced reactivities allowing for the development of new transformations.

RESUMEN

Recent advances in heterobimetallic chemistry have revealed the potential for mixed-metal systems to facilitate reactions that are unattainable with their single-metal components. This perspective explores the pairing of nickel(0) complexes with organo-alkali-metal reagents, which yield highly reactive alkali-metal nickelates. These previously underexplored systems have re-emerged as a promising area of research, with recent studies uncovering their unique bonding and structural motifs. Furthermore, the discovery of nickelates as potential intermediates in cross-coupling reactions has provided the foundation for the development and mechanistic understanding of stoichiometric and catalytic transformations.

RESUMEN

Reminiscent of Lochmann-Schlosser superbase recipes, the addition of two molar equivalents of KOtBu to Zn(TMP)2 (TMP=2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide) transforms this mild zinc bis-amide base to a powerful metalating agent able to perform facile regioselective zincation of a wide range of sensitive fluoroarenes. Structural authentication of the intermediates post Zn-H exchange demonstrates activation of both TMP groups to form a range of higher order bis-aryl potassium zincates, isolable as solids and further functionalized in electrophilic interception reactions. Studies assessing the role of KOtBu reveal that the first equivalent undergoes co-complexation with Zn(TMP)2 , enabling kinetic activation of the amide groups; whereas the second equivalent stabilizes the metalated intermediate preventing ligand redistribution. Showcasing its metalating power, this bimetallic KOtBu/Zn(TMP)2 partnership, can effect zincation of toluene and benzene at room temperature.

RESUMEN

Deaggregating the alkyl sodium NaCH2 SiMe3 with polydentate nitrogen ligands enables the preparation and characterisation of new, hydrocarbon soluble chelated alkylsodium reagents. Equipped with significantly enhanced metalating power over their organolithium counterparts, these systems can promote controlled sodiation of weakly acidic benzylic C-H bonds from a series of toluene derivatives under mild stoichiometric conditions. This has been demonstrated through the benzylic aroylation of toluenes with Weinreb amides, that delivers a wide range of 2-arylacetophenones in good to excellent yields. Success in isolating and determining the structures of key organometallic intermediates has provided useful mechanistic insight into these new sodium-mediated transformations.

RESUMEN

Hydrogen isotope exchange (HIE) has become one of the most studied methods to prepare deuterated molecules, with the primary focus recently on metal-catalyzed C-H activation with transition metals. Here we report the use of a simple sodium amide, NaTMP (TMP = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide), combined with tridentate Lewis donor PMDETA (N,N,N',N″,N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine), which is able to catalytically promote the HIE of a series nonactivated arenes under mild reaction conditions using C6D6 as the deuterium source. Establishing the potential of NaTMP for the deuteration of aromatic molecules, several nonactivated substrates such as naphthalene, diphenylacetylene, and stilbene could be deuterated under mild reaction conditions without the need of transition metals. Combining NMR studies with the isolation of key organometallic intermediates, we demonstrate that the ability of NaTMP/PMEDTA to partially metalate C6D6, with concomitant generation of TMP(D), is key to enable the catalytic deuteration.

RESUMEN

Advancing the understanding of using alkali-metal alkoxides as additives to organomagnesium reagents in Mg-Br exchange reactions, a homologous series of mixed-ligand alkyl/alkoxide alkali-metal magnesiates [MMg(CH2 SiMe3 )2 (dmem)]2 [dmem=2-{[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]methylamino} ethoxide; M=Li, 1; Na, 2; (THF)K, 3] has been prepared. Structural and spectroscopic studies have established the constitutions of these heteroleptic/heterometallic species, which are retained in arene solution. Evaluation of their reactivity towards 2-bromoanisole has uncovered a marked alkali-metal effect with potassium magnesiate 3 being the most efficient of the three ate reagents. Studies probing the constitution of the exchange product from this reaction suggest that the putative [KMgAr2 (dmem)]2 (Ar=o-OMe-C6 H4 ) intermediate undergoes redistribution into its single metal components [KAr]n and [MgAr(dmem)]2 (5). This process can be circumvented by using a different potassium alkoxide containing an aliphatic chain such as KOR' (R'=2-ethylhexyl) which undergoes co-complexation with Mg(CH2 SiMe3 ) to give [KMg(CH2 SiMe3 )2 (OR')]2 (7). This ate, in turn, reacts quantitatively with 2-bromoanisole furnishing [KMgAr2 (OR')]2 (9) which is stable in solution as a bimetallic compound. Collectively this work highlights the complexity of these alkali-metal mediated Mg-Br exchange reactions, where each reaction component can have a profound effect not only on the success of the reaction; but also the stability of the final metalated intermediates prior to their electrophilic interception.

RESUMEN

Rare examples of heavier alkali metal manganates [{(AM)Mn(CH2 SiMe3 )(N'Ar )2 }∞ ] (AM=K, Rb, or Cs) [N'Ar =N(SiMe3 )(Dipp), where Dipp=2,6-iPr2 -C6 H3 ] have been synthesised with the Rb and Cs examples crystallographically characterised. These heaviest manganates crystallise as polymeric zig-zag chains propagated by AM⋅⋅⋅π-arene interactions. Key to their preparation is to avoid Lewis base donor solvents. In contrast, using multidentate nitrogen donors encourages ligand scrambling leading to redistribution of these bimetallic manganate compounds into their corresponding homometallic species as witnessed for the complete Li - Cs series. Adding to the few known crystallographically characterised unsolvated and solvated rubidium and caesium s-block metal amides, six new derivatives ([{AM(N'Ar )}∞ ], [{AM(N'Ar )⋅TMEDA}∞ ], and [{AM(N'Ar )⋅PMDETA}∞ ] where AM=Rb or Cs) have been structurally authenticated. Utilising monodentate diethyl ether as a donor, it was also possible to isolate and crystallographically characterise sodium manganate [(Et2 O)2 Na(n Bu)Mn[(N'Ar )2 ], a monomeric, dinuclear structure prevented from aggregating by two blocking ether ligands bound to sodium.

RESUMEN

Recent advances in cooperative chemistry have shown the enormous potential of main group heterobimetallic complexes for the functionalisation of aromatic molecules. Going beyond main group metal chemistry, here we provide an overview on the synthesis, structure and reactivity of bimetallic complexes which combine an alkali-metal (AM= Li, Na) with a divalent earth-abundant transition metal (M= Mn, Fe, Co, Ni), containing the utility silyl amide HMDS (HMDS = N(SiMe3)2). Advancing the understanding on how cooperative effects operate in these bimetallic (ate) systems, selected examples of their applications in deprotonative metalation are also discussed with special emphasis on the constitution of the metalated intermediates.

RESUMEN

Though LiTMP (TMP=2,2',6,6'-tetramethylpiperidide) is a commonly used amide, surprisingly the heavier NaTMP has hardly been utilised. Here, by mixing NaTMP with tridentate donor PMDETA (N,N,N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine), we provide structural, and mechanistic insights into the sodiation of non-activated arenes (e.g. anisole and benzene). While these reactions are low yielding, adding B(OiPr)3 has a profound effect, not only by intercepting the CAr -Na bond, but also by driving the metalation reaction towards quantitative formation of more stabilized sodium aryl boronates. Demonstrating its metalating power, regioselective C2-metalation/borylation of naphthalene has been accomplished contrasting with single-metal based protocols which are unselective and low yielding. Extension to other arenes allows for in situ generation of aryl boronates which can then directly engage in Suzuki-Miyaura couplings, furnishing a range of biaryls in a selective and efficient manner.

RESUMEN

Advancing the understanding of lithum nickelate complexes, here we report a family of homoleptic organonickelate complexes obtained by reacting Ni(COD)2 and lithium aryl-acetylides in the presence of the bidentate donor TMEDA. These compounds represent rare examples of low-valent transition-metals supported solely by organolithium ligands. Whilst the solid-state structures indicate a hexagonal planar geometry around Ni0 with Ni-Li bonds, bonding analysis via QTAIM, NCI, NBO and ELI methods reveals that the Ni-Li interactions are repulsive in nature, characterising these complexes as tri-coordinated. London dispersion forces between TMEDA and the organic substituents on nickel are found to play a crucial role in the stabilisation and thus isolation of these complexes. Preliminary reactivity studies demonstrate that the homoleptic lithium nickelates undergo stoichiometric cross-coupling with PhI to give dinickel clusters containing both anionic acetylide and neutral alkyne ligands.

RESUMEN

While cobalt complexes have already shown their potential for C-H and C-F bond activation of fluoroarenes, their reactivity as metalating agents via Co-H exchange towards these substrates has not been explored. Herein, we report a Co(HMDS)2 [HMDS=N(SiMe3 )2 ] system which, when synergistically enhanced via sodium amide Na(HMDS) mediation, can render chemo- and regioselective cobaltation of a series of fluoroarenes to produce a new class of homoleptic square planar [Na2 CoAr4 ] complexes. Density functional theory calculations elucidate the key roles of the Na/Co counterparts in a stepwise sodiation/cobalt transmetalation process, leading to this novel C-H metalation. Depending on the reaction stoichiometry, this process can occur inter- or intramolecularly, furnishing transient [NaCo(HMDS)2 Ar] intermediates which can undergo ligand rearrangement to afford [Na2 CoAr4 ] with concomitant formation of Co(HMDS)2 and [NaCo(HMDS)3 ].
