RESUMEN

Individual heating systems, such as the air-source heat pump (ASHP) air-conditioner or floor heating (FH), are usually used by people living in the hot summer and cold winter (HSCW) zone of China to heat indoor climates in the winter. However, little research has been conducted in the HSCW zone on the thermal comfort difference between indoor climates heated by ASHP air-conditioners and those heated by floor heating, as well as how occupants adapt to different indoor climates. We conducted a comparative field experiment in ASHP-heated and FH-heated apartments in Nanjing to investigate how different types of heating systems influence the thermal sensation of occupants, and we conducted a comparative field experiment in ASHP-heated office buildings and naturally ventilated teaching buildings in Shanghai to investigate how occupants adapt to different indoor thermal environments. Indoor environmental parameters and body surface temperatures were measured using instruments, and occupants' thermal sensation, activity level, and clothing were evaluated using the questionnaire. The results show that floor heating improves thermal comfort by raising foot temperature compared to the ASHP air-conditioner, and that occupants become acclimatized to different indoor climates by adjusting neutral operative temperature. According to the findings, there is no need to overheat the indoor environment in the HSCW zone because occupants can adapt to their experienced thermal environment and it is critical to maintain warm foot temperature in the cool/cold indoor environment.

RESUMEN

Spartina alterniflora Loisel, a perennial grass, has become an invasive species in China's coastal wetlands (Zhang et al. 2018). In July 2021, brown spot symptoms were observed on S. alterniflora in a coastal wetland (21°45'48″N, 108°44'00″E) in Beihai City, Guangxi Province, China. The disease affected approximately 50% of the plants in the surveyed area (0.2 ha) and was also observed in other regions of Beihai. It caused brown lesions with a gray or whitish center on the leaves and stems of S. alterniflora. As the disease developed, it ultimately led to leaf shedding and plant death. To isolate the causal agent, 18 fragments (~ 5 mm) from six symptomatic plants (3 leaf pieces per plant) were surface sterilized with 1% NaOCl solution for 2 min and rinsed three times with sterilized water. Subsequently, the tissues were placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium supplemented with chloramphenicol (0.1 g/liter) and incubated at 28°C for three days. The hyphal tips were transferred onto fresh PDA to obtain pure cultures. A total of 25 isolates were obtained, 20 of which shared similar morphologies, while the remaining five exhibited distinct morphological characteristics and were non-pathogenic to S. alterniflora. Three isolates (MC16.1.3, MC16.6.2, and MC16.8.3) were randomly selected from the 20 for further investigation. The colonies on PDA were flat with dense aerial mycelia. The colony margins were entire, light brown in the centre, white to grey at the margin; reverse dark brown in the centre, gray at the margin. Conidia were straight to slightly curved, light olive-brown to dark olive-brown, septate, measured 33.5 to 79.1 µm × 10.4 to 18.7 µm (average 52.9 × 14.4 µm, n = 100), with a distinctly protruding hilum swelled from the basal cell. For molecular identification, the genomic DNA was extracted from mycelium on PDA using the CTAB method (Guo et al. 2000). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), and translation elongation factor 1 alpha (TEF1-α) genes were amplified and sequenced with the primer pairs ITS1/ITS4 (White et al. 1990), GPD1/GPD2 (Berbee et al. 1999), and EF1-983/EF1-2218 (Rehner et al. 2005), respectively. A BLAST analysis revealed that the ITS (OR516787-9), GAPDH (OR523686-8), and TEF-α (OR523683-5) had 99.1 to 99.7% identity with those of E. rostratum strains BRIP 11417 (LT837836, LT882553, and LT896656) and CBS 128061 (KT265240, LT715900, and LT896658) (Hernández-Restrepo et al. 2018). Based on the concatenated sequences, a phylogenetic tree generated by PhyloSuite software (Zhang et al., 2020) through Bayesian inference (BI) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) methods placed the isolates within E. rostratum. These morphological characteristics and molecular analyses confirmed the pathogen as E. rostratum (Hernández-Restrepo et al. 2018; Kaboré et al. 2022). To confirm pathogenicity, a conidial water suspension (~ 1 × 106 conidia/ml) of each of the three strains was inoculated on nine healthy S. alterniflora plants that had been grown for six months. Control plants were treated with sterile water. All plants were then enclosed in plastic bags and incubated in a greenhouse at 28°C. Six days after inoculation, the plants exhibited symptoms similar to those observed in nature. The control plants developed no symptoms. These experiments were replicated three times with similar results. To fulfill Koch's postulates, E. rostratum was consistently re-isolated from symptomatic tissue and confirmed by morphology and sequencing, whereas no fungus was isolated from the control plants. In recent years, S. alterniflora has posed a serious threat to the indigenous biodiversity of wetland ecosystems (Zhang et al. 2018). To our knowledge, this is the first report of E. rostratum causing brown spot on S. alterniflora worldwide.

RESUMEN

Soil heavy metal pollution is widespread around the world. Compared with hyperaccumulation plants, non-hyperaccumulator plant communities have many advantages in the remediation of heavy metals pollution in soil. The application of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) is inexpensive and convenient, which can promote the growth of plant. N and P fertilizer might increase plant community remediation of heavy metal polluted soils. In our study, the effects of N and P fertilizer on remediation of soil Cd, Cu, Pb pollution by plant community were studied through a greenhouse experiment. Our results indicated that addition of N, P and N + P fertilizer increased plant community aboveground biomass. Simultaneously, addition of N and P fertilizer increased the accumulation of heavy metals in aboveground of the plant community and accelerated plants absorption soil heavy metals. Among them, N fertilizer had the best effect. Our results provide an inexpensive method for remediation heavy metal pollution of contaminated farmland, abandoned land and mine tailings, etc.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) is low among elderly residents in nursing homes in China. We aimed to determine the factors that influence PA among elderly nursing home residents and their direct or indirect effects on PA levels. METHODS: The PA levels of the participants were measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, and their health beliefs were assessed using a self-developed 18-item questionnaire titled the 'Health Beliefs of Nursing Home Residents Regarding Physical Activity' in accordance with Health Belief Model (HBM) constructs. The correlations between HBM constructs and PA levels were analyzed and a regression-based path analysis was conducted to examine the relationships between HBM constructs and PA levels. RESULTS: A total of 180 residents with a mean age of 82.5 years (standard deviation = 5.76) were recruited. Linear regression analysis revealed that self-efficacy (p < 0.001), perceived severity (p < 0.01), and cues to action (p < 0.01) were associated with the level of PA among nursing home residents. In the conceptual path model, self-efficacy, perceived severity, and cues to action had positive direct effects on the PA level, while perceived benefits and perceived barriers had indirect effects on the PA level. CONCLUSION: The residents' self-efficacy, perceived severity, and cues to action were found to be important factors that can affect the design and implementation of educational programs for PA. A better understanding of such associations may help healthcare providers design informed educational interventions to increase PA levels among nursing home residents.

RESUMEN

Perovskite solar cells are strong competitors for silicon-based ones, but suffer from poor long-term stability, for which the intrinsic stability of perovskite materials is of primary concern. Herein, we prepared a series of well-defined cesium-containing mixed cation and mixed halide perovskite single-crystal alloys, which enabled systematic investigations on their structural stabilities against light, heat, water, and oxygen. Two potential phase separation processes are evidenced for the alloys as the cesium content increases to 10% and/or bromide to 15%. Eventually, a highly stable new composition, (FAPbI3)0.9(MAPbBr3)0.05(CsPbBr3)0.05, emerges with a carrier lifetime of 16 µs. It remains stable during at least 10 000 h water-oxygen and 1000 h light stability tests, which is very promising for long-term stable devices with high efficiency. The mechanism for the enhanced stability is elucidated through detailed single-crystal structure analysis. Our work provides a single-crystal-based paradigm for stability investigation, leading to the discovery of stable new perovskite materials.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Studies have suggested sex differences in the mortality rate associated with diabetes. We conducted a meta-analysis to estimate the relative effect of diabetes on the risk of all-cause, cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), infectious disease, and respiratory disease mortality in women compared with men. METHODS: Studies published from their inception to April 1, 2018, identified through a systematic search of PubMed and EMBASE and review of references. We used the sex-specific RRs to derive the women-to-men ratio of RRs (RRR) and 95% CIs from each study. Subsequently, the RRR for each outcome was pooled with random-effects meta-analysis weighted by the inverse of the variances of the log RRRs. RESULTS: Forty-nine studies with 86 prospective cohorts met the inclusion criteria and were eligible for analysis. The pooled women-to-men RRR showed a 13% greater risk of all-cause mortality associated with diabetes in women than in men (RRR 1.13, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.19; P < 0.001). The pooled multiple-adjusted RRR indicated a 30% significantly greater excess risk of CVD mortality in women with diabetes compared with men (RRR 1.30, 95% CI 1.13 to 1.49; P < 0.001). Compared with men with diabetes, women with diabetes had a 58% greater risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality, but only an 8% greater risk of stroke mortality (RRRCHD 1.58, 95% CI 1.32 to 1.90; P < 0.001; RRRstroke 1.08, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.15; P < 0.001). However, no sex differences were observed in pooled results of populations with or without diabetes for all-cancer (RRR 1.02, 95% CI 0.98 to 1.06; P = 0.21), infectious (RRR 1.13, 95% CI 0.90 to 1.38; P = 0.33), and respiratory mortality (RRR 1.08, 95% CI 0.95 to 1.23; P = 0.26). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with men with the same condition, women with diabetes have a 58% and 13% greater risk of CHD and all-cause mortality, respectively, although there was a significant heterogeneity between studies. This points to an urgent need to develop sex- and gender-specific risk assessment strategies and therapeutic interventions that target diabetes management in the context of CHD prevention.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic data of acute kidney injury (AKI) during pregnancy is lacking in China. This study aims to determine the effect of pregnancy on the risk of AKI among hospitalized women of childbearing age, and to describe the incidence, risk factors and outcomes of AKI in hospitalized pregnant women in China. METHODS: We previously conducted a nationwide, multi-centered cohort of hospitalized patients from 25 hospitals in China during 1/1/2013 to 31/12/2015. Women of childbearing age (14-50 year) who had at least two serum creatinine tests within any 7-day window were selected as analysis set. Patient-level data were obtained from the electronic hospitalization information system and laboratory databases. AKI events were identified according to the creatinine criteria of Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes. RESULTS: Among 110,873 women of childbearing age, pregnant women (n = 10,920) had a 51% higher risk of AKI than non-pregnant women (n = 99,953). Community acquired and hospital acquired AKI occurred in 3.6% (n = 393) and 3.7% (n = 402) of the pregnant women, respectively, giving rise to an overall AKI incidence of 7.3%. While, hospital coding would have identified less than 5% of AKI episodes. The top three risk factors of AKI during pregnancy, ranked in order of decreasing population attributable fractions were pregnancy-induced hypertension syndrome (21.1%), acute fatty liver (13.5%), and chronic kidney disease (6.2%). CONCLUSION: AKI in pregnancy is associated with increased maternal mortality rate, longer length of stay and higher daily cost. AKI is a common and severe complication during pregnancy in China.

RESUMEN

Methanogen populations of an intertidal mudflat in the Yangtze River estuary of China were investigated based on the methyl coenzyme M reductase A (mcrA) gene using 454-pyrosequencing and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Samples were collected at six depths from three locations. In the qPCR analyses, a mean depth-wise change of mcrA gene abundance was observed from (1.23 ± 0.13) × 10(7) to (1.16 ± 0.29) × 10(8) per g dried soil, which was inversely correlated with the depletion of sulfate (R(2) = 0.74; α = 0.05) and salinity (R (2) = 0.66; α = 0.05). The copy numbers of mcrA was at least 1 order of magnitude higher than dissimilatory sulfate reductase B (dsrB) genes, likely indicating the importance of methanogenesis at the mudflat. Sequences related to the orders Methanomicrobiales, Methanosarcinales, Methanobacteriales, Methanococcales and the uncultured methanogens; Rice Cluster I (RC-I), Zoige cluster I (ZC-I) and anaerobic methane oxidizing archaeal lineage-1 (ANME-1) were detected. Methanomicrobiales and Methanosarcinales dominated the entire sediment layers, but detectable changes of proportions were observed with depth. The hydrogenotrophic methanogens Methanomicrobiales slightly increased with depth while Methanosarcinales showed the reverse. Chao1 and ACE richness estimators revealed higher diversity of methanogens near the surface (0-10 cm) when compared with the bottom sediments. The near-surface sediments were mainly dominated by the family Methanosarcinaceae (45 %), which has members that can utilize substrates that cannot be used by sulfate-reducing bacteria. Overall, current data indicate that Methanosarcinales and Methanomicrobiales are the most dominant methanogens within the entire depth profile down to 100 cm, with higher abundance and diversity of methanogens in the deeper and upper sediment layers, respectively.

RESUMEN

Wetlands sequestrate carbon at the highest rate than any other ecosystems on Earth. However, the spatial and temporal dynamics of GHGs emissions from the wetland ecosystems in China are still elusive. We synthesized 166 publications that contain 462 in situ measurements of GHGs emissions from the natural wetlands in China, and further analyzed the variability and the drivers of GHGs emissions in eight subdivisions of China's wetlands. The results show that the current studies are mainly concentrated in the estuaries, Sanjiang Plain, and Zoige wetlands. The average CO2 emissions, CH4 fluxes and N2O fluxes from Chinese wetlands were 218.84 mg·m-2·h-1, 1.95 mg·m-2·h-1 and 5.8 × 10-2 mg·m-2·h-1, respectively. The global warming potential (GWP) of China's wetlands was estimated to be 1881.36 TgCO2-eq·yr-1, with CO2 emissions contributing more than 65% to the GWP value. The combined GWP values of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau wetlands, coastal wetlands and northeastern wetlands account for 84.8% of GWP of China's wetlands. Correlation analysis showed that CO2 emissions increased with the increasing mean annual temperature, elevation, annual rainfall, and wetland water level, but decreased with soil pH. CH4 fluxes increased with the mean annual temperature and soil water content but decreased with the redox potential. This study analyzed the drivers of GHGs emissions from wetland ecosystems at the national scale, and GWP values of eight wetland subregions of China were comprehensively assessed. Our results are potentially useful for the global GHGs inventory, and can help assess the response of GHGs emissions of wetland ecosystem to environmental and climate change.

RESUMEN

Psychological adaptation to thermal environments might play an important role in the human thermal comfort. However, effects of psychological thermal adaptation on thermal comfort have been rarely studied. To investigate building occupants' psychological adaptation to indoor climates in hot summer and cold winter, a long-term tracking survey within a year in a naturally ventilated building was conducted on a group of occupants from a college class in Nanjing situated in the Hot Summer and Cold Winter zone. Indoor and outdoor environment parameters were measured, and at the same time occupants' clothing insulation, physical activity level, and thermal sensation were investigated using questionnaires. Results indicate building occupants adapted to their hot environments in summer and cold environments in winter by psychological adaptation. Occupants' neutral skin temperature was elevated in summer while lowered in winter due to psychological adaptive processes. The thermal sensitivity to skin/operative temperature change is influenced by psychological adaptation, and the higher the psychological adaptation, the lower the sensitivity to skin/operative temperature change. Furthermore, psychological adaptation is affected by both the indoor climate and outdoor climate to which occupants are exposed.

RESUMEN

In the context of accelerating the global realization of carbon peaking and carbon neutralization, biochar produced from biomass feedstock via a pyrolysis process has been more and more focused on by people from various fields. Biochar is a carbon-rich material with good properties that could be used as a carrier, a catalyst, and an absorbent. Such properties have made biochar a good candidate as a base material in the fabrication of electrochemical sensors or biosensors, like carbon nanotube and graphene. However, the study of the applications of biochar in electrochemical sensing technology is just beginning; there are still many challenges to be conquered. In order to better carry out this research, we reviewed almost all of the recent papers published in the past 5 years on biochar-based electrochemical sensors and biosensors. This review is different from the previously published review papers, in which the types of biomass feedstock, the preparation methods, and the characteristics of biochar were mainly discussed. First, the role of biochar in the fabrication of electrochemical sensors and biosensors is summarized. Then, the analytes determined by means of biochar-based electrochemical sensors and biosensors are discussed. Finally, the perspectives and challenges in applying biochar in electrochemical sensors and biosensors are provided.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Depression is considered a risk factor for cognitive decline. The long-term impact of depressive symptoms on cognitive performance has not been established thus far. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the longitudinal associations between depressive symptoms and cognitive performance among middle-aged and elderly population. METHODS: We included 10,387 adults aged ≥45 years from the Health and Retirement Study (2004 to 2014) in this study. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CESD) scale. Participant's cognitive function was assessed via the telephone interview for cognitive status (TICS); the total cognitive score ranged from 0 to 35. We classified the participants into four clusters according to the quartile of the total cognitive score (TCS). We examined the change of depressive symptoms and cognitive performance by using the unconditional latent growth curve modeling (LGCM) method, and a parallel LGCM method was used to examine the longitudinal associations between depressive symptoms and cognitive performance among middle-aged and elderly adults in each cluster. RESULTS: Participants with lower levels of cognitive performance were associated with a greater risk of high depressive symptoms. Results from unconditional LGCM showed a sustained decline in cognitive performance and an increasing trend in depressive symptoms per 2 years for each cluster of participants. The parallel LGCM indicated that baseline levels of depression showed a significant negative correlation with the cognitive performance at baseline (ß [95% CI] of intercept(Dep) predicting intercept(TCS) were -0.33 [-0.41, -0.26], -0.03[-0.06, -0.00], -0.05 [-0.07, -0.02] and -0.64 [-0.70,-0.58], for clusters of Q1 to Q3 and the entire population, respectively). Further, a significant positive prospective association was observed between baseline levels of depression and changes in cognitive performance (intercept(Dep) predicting slope(TCS) were -0.05 [-0.08, -0.02], -0.09[-0.13, -0.05], -0.12 [-0.15, -0.08], -0.11 [-0.15, -0.06] and -0.04 [-0.06,-0.02] for clusters of Q1 to Q4 and the entire population, respectively). Moreover, for participants with the highest quartile of TCS, the rising trend of depressive symptoms accelerated the decline of cognitive performance during the follow-up period (Slope(Dep) predicting Slope(TCS): -0.44 [-0.86, -0.01]). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that depressive symptoms were associated with lower cognitive performance and larger subsequent decline during follow-up period. Adults with depression may require more medical attention, and early intervention is required to delay the development of cognitive impairment and dementia.

RESUMEN

Aim: This study proposes investigating the risk and protective factors of intimate partner (IP) psychological violence and psychological distress to better promote psychological wellbeing for nurses and health outcomes for patients. Design: A cross-sectional study. Method: This cross-sectional study was carried out chiefly in Guangdong, Hunan, and Shaanxi provinces, in the east, central, and west of the Chinese economic areas, respectively. It was conducted in October 2021 using convenience sampling. A total of 843 nurses were eligible for the final analysis. Single-factor linear regression models were used to identify potential factors associated with IP psychological violence and psychological distress. In addition, the structural equation model was used to explore the role of personality traits and social support in the association between IP psychological violence and psychological distress. Results: The predictors for the score of IP psychological violence among nurses were participants' married status, contact frequency with a partner, perceived past-year psychological and physical violence experience, the alcohol consumption of partners, and personality traits and social support of partners. Moreover, the alcohol consumption of participants, the past-year experience of IP psychological violence, the score of psychological violence, personality traits, social support, and the personality traits of partners were associated factors affecting the psychological distress of nurses. In the structural model, the personality trait of partners had a direct pathway to psychological violence and social support. The results demonstrated that psychological violence significantly increased psychological distress. Conclusion: Personality traits and social support are essential factors influencing the relationship between IP psychological violence and psychological distress. Impact: The findings of this study emphasize the possibility and importance of identification and intervention for reducing IP psychological violence based on personality traits and social support.

RESUMEN

Implementing fast-charging lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is severely hindered by the issues of Li plating and poor rate capability for conventional graphite anode. Wadsley-Roth phase TiNb2 O7 is regarded as a promising anode candidate to satisfy the requirements of fast-charging LIBs. However, the unsatisfactory electrochemical kinetics resulting from sluggish ion and electron transfer still limit its wide applications. Herein, an effective strategy is proposed to synchronously improve the ion and electron transfer of TiNb2 O7 by incorporation of oxygen vacancy and N-doped graphene matrix (TNO- x @N-G), which is designed by combination of solution-combustion and electrostatic self-assembly approach. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that Li+ intercalation gives rise to the semi-metallic characteristics of lithiated phases (Liy TNO- x ), leading to the self-accelerated electron transport. Moreover, in situ X-ray diffraction and Raman measurements reveal the highly reversible structural evolution of the TNO- x @N-G during cycling. Consequently, the TNO- x @N-G delivers a higher reversible capacity of 199.0 mAh g-1 and a higher capacity retention of 86.5% than those of pristine TNO (155.8 mAh g-1 , 59.4%) at 10 C after 2000 cycles. Importantly, various electrochemical devices including lithium-ion full battery and hybrid lithium-ion capacitor by using the TNO- x @N-G anode exhibit excellent rate capability and cycling stability, verifying its potential in practical applications.

RESUMEN

Prussian blue analogues are promising cathode material candidates for aqueous rechargeable metal-ion batteries. Although great efforts have been made on developing materials, there are still rare reports on optimizing cell performance from mechanistic understanding and studies. Here we unveil the alkali-metal-ion intercalation mechanism in Berlin green with a home-built spectroelectrochemical cell for operando X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopies, which allows us to obtain the correlated local structure, crystal structure, redox activity, and potential profiles during the charging and discharging processes. We found that the intercalation of Na+ follows a solid solution mechanism leading to a high capacity, and the intercalation of K+ follows a two-phase transition mechanism showing a high voltage. With this understanding, we propose a new strategy using a Na+/K+ hybrid cation electrolyte to realize both high voltage and energy density. This study offers a unique insight for improving the cell performance from the understanding of the reaction mechanism.

RESUMEN

Nickel-rich LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 (nickel-rich NCM, 0.6 ≤ x < 1) cathode materials suffer from multiscale reaction heterogeneity within the electrode during the electrochemical energy storage process. However, owing to the lack of appropriate diagnostic tools, the systematic understanding and observation on the redox reaction heterogeneity at the individual secondary-particle level is still limited. Raman spectroscopy can not only reflect the depth of the redox reaction through probing the vibrational information on the metal-oxygen coordination structure but also sensitively detect the local structure changes of different regions within the secondary particle with suitable spatial resolution. Therefore, Raman spectroscopy is applied here to conveniently conduct the high-resolution and in-depth analysis of the rate-dependent reaction heterogeneity within nickel-rich NCM secondary particles. It is found that, under high-rate conditions, the oxidation/reduction reaction mainly occurs in the surface region of the particles and the cause of this particle-scale reaction heterogeneity is the limitation of the slow solid-phase Li+ diffusion and the transient charging/discharging processes. In addition, this reaction heterogeneity would aggravate the structural instability of the material continuously during the charging/discharging cycles, thus resulting in a slowdown in the kinetics of Li+ de/intercalation and the apparent capacity decay. This work can not only provide fundamental insight into the rational modification of high-power nickel-rich NCM materials but also guide the setting of electrochemical operating conditions for high-power lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: A high prevalence of psychological distress is observed in nurses due to multiple occupational stressors. Personality traits and personal factors are important factors that lead to psychological distress. The personality profile reflects a combination of personality traits; however, the relationship between personality profiles and personal factors that affect psychological distress among nurses has not been defined. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in November 2020 in China. Convenience and snowball sampling were used to recruit participants. Latent profile analysis was used to identify personality profiles of nurses based on the big-five personality traits. Single-factor analysis and multivariate logistic regression were used to determine the factors affecting psychological distress. The structural equation model was used to verify the hypothetical model linking personality profiles, self-efficacy, psychological resilience, and coping style with psychological distress. RESULTS: A total of 953 Chinese nurses (934 female) with a mean (S.D.) age of 32.8 (8.6) years were recruited. Personality profiles identified were negative, normative, and positive. A personality profile may predict psychological distress directly and indirectly through self-efficacy, psychological resilience, and coping style. LIMITATIONS: No complex sampling limits the representativeness of Chinese nurses. External factors affecting psychological distress were not investigated. CONCLUSION: Nurses with anegative personality profile had a higher prevalence of psychological distress. This study establishes the importance of personality profile assessment to identify nurses at higher risk of psychological distress. It suggests that interventions should be based on self-efficacy, psychological resilience, and coping style as potential management strategies.

RESUMEN

Soybean, as a major oil crop, is one of the most widely planted crops in the world. Fusarium oxysporum causes soybean root rot, leading to great economic losses to soybean planting every year globally. Chemical fungicide for controlling soybean F. oxysporum diseases may cause environmental problems and has human health risks. Biological control methods avoid these shortcomings; however, few studies have focused on biocontrol of soybean diseases caused by F. oxysporum. Aiming at this problem, we obtained biocontrol bacteria against soybean F. oxysporum by plate confrontation method. The type of the strain with the highest biocontrol activity was identified by molecular biological methods, and then its biocontrol effects were verified through greenhouse experiments. One of our isolated strain named BS06 strain had the highest activity, which was identified as Bacillus subtilis. Our study showed that BS06 strain could effectively control soybean F. oxysporum disease and significantly reduce F. oxysporum to infect soybean roots. Compared with control and carbendazim treatments, BS06 treatment had higher root biomass, plant height, leaf chlorophyll content, stem base diameter and control efficiency. Our results indicated that BS06 could effectively protect soybean root (BS06 strain might produce substances to inhibit F. oxysporum), which was potentially useful for soybean planting.

RESUMEN

Heavy metal pollution is widespread, and has an increasing trend in some countries and regions. It can be easily accumulated in plants, leading to plant species loss and affecting plant community composition. Artificial restoration can conserve plant diversity in contaminated soils and accelerate the recovery of polluted ecosystems. The application of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) is inexpensive and convenient, which can increase the resistance of plants to adversity and promote the growth of plants in heavy metal polluted soils. In order to examine the effect of N and P nutrition on the conservation of plant community, we conducted a comparison experiment in greenhouse using soil with low N and P concentration, and set five treatments: C (soil with no heavy metals and fertilizer addition), H (soil with heavy metals addition but with no fertilizer), HN (soil with heavy metals and N addition), HP treatment(soil with heavy metals and P addition), HNP treatment (soil with heavy metals, N and P addition). Our results showed that heavy metal pollution reduced plant species by 300%, and significantly decreased plant diversity (P < 0.05). N addition increased the richness of plant species and increased the dominance of Euphorbia peplus, but had no significant effect on plant diversity and community structure, while reduced the evenness of plant species. P addition of HP and HNP treatments restored plant species richness and increased plant diversity under heavy metal pollution. The plant community structures of these two treatments were more similar to that of group C. Compared with N addition, P addition had a better performance to restoring the species composition and relative dominance of plant communities. Our results provided a guidance for the restoration of plant communities and the conservation of plant species in low N and P concentration soils with the context of heavy metal pollution.

RESUMEN

Biological invasion represents a global issue of concern due to its large negative impacts on native ecosystems and society. Elucidating the evolutionary history and genetic basis underpinning invasiveness is critical to understanding how alien species invade and adapt to novel environments. Smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora, 2n = 6x = 62) is a notorious invasive species that causes heavily negative effects on native ecosystems worldwide. Here we addressed the evolutionary mechanisms underlying the invasion and dispersal history of this species along the China coast in the past decades. We employed nine microsatellites and three chloroplast fragments to investigate phylogeographic structure and genetic diversity of 11 native US and 11 invasive Chinese S. alterniflora populations. Demographic history simulation was also performed for both the native and invasive populations, respectively. Comparative genetic analyses of these natural populations revealed that although all the Chinese populations were introduced only once, high level of genetic diversity with weak geographic structure was observed. In particular, both the genetic features and mathematical simulation illustrated very recent population expansion in the Chinese populations. We found that genetic variants identified in native US populations were mixed in the Chinese populations, suggesting the recombination of these original variants during the invasion process. These genetic attributes indicate that Chinese populations might not have experienced a genetic bottleneck during the invasion process. High genetic diversity and genetic admixture might have contributed to the success of invasion of S. alterniflora in China. Our study provides a framework of how the smooth cordgrass spreads along the China coast as well as its potential genetic mechanisms underlying the invasion.
