RESUMEN

Spin-triplet superconductors play central roles in Majorana physics and quantum computing but are difficult to identify. We show the methods of kink-point upper critical field and flux quantization in superconducting rings can unequivocally identify spin-singlet, spin-triplet in centrosymmetric superconductors, and singlet-triplet admixture in noncentrosymmetric superconductors, as realized in γ-BiPd, ß-Bi_{2}Pd, and α-BiPd, respectively. Our findings are essential for identifying triplet superconductors and exploring their quantum properties.

RESUMEN

Objective: To investigate the clinical features, treatment and prognosis of chronic eosinophilic pneumonia. Methods: Nine patients with chronic eosinophilic pneumonia diagnosed in Shandong Provincial Qianfoshan Hospital from January 2014 to December 2020 were enrolled and followed up. The data of clinically proven chronic eosinophilic pneumonia were reviewed. Results: The 9 cases included one male and eight females, aged from 16 to 71 years (median 47 years). Among them, 5 cases were complicated with asthma, 1 case was complicated with allergic rhinitis, and 1 case had an allergic history of pollen. All the patients had cough, expectoration, chest tightness and wheezing, and a few had fatigue (3/9), fever (1/9) and chest pain (1/9). Single or multiple patchy high-density shadows (9/9), mediastinal lymphadenopathy (7/9), air bronchogram (2/9), and reticular shadow (1/9) were observed in chest CT. Peripheral eosinophils (EOS) and serum total IgE increased to varying degrees in the 9 patients. Meanwhile, the bronchoscopy of 5 cases showed elevated percentage of eosinophils in alveolar lavage fluid, and the lung biopsy of remaining 4 cases showed EOS infiltration in lung alveolar and interstitium. After receiving glucocorticoid therapy for 0.5 to 1 month, the clinical symptoms of all 9 patients had been improved and lung lesions on CT scans had been obviously absorbed. Four cases relapsed during follow-up. Conclusions: For patients especially women who have a history of allergy, elevated blood eosinophils and serum total IgE with pulmonary high-density shadow or consolidation, chronic eosinophilic pneumonia should be considered, and bronchoscopy or percutaneous lung biopsy is indicated for a definite diagnosis. Glucocorticoid therapy is effective, but the rate of recurrence is high.

RESUMEN

Soil contamination by arsenic (As) is an important environmental issue globally. Intercropping of hyperaccumulators with main crop is typically applied for remediation of As-contaminated soil. Most hyperaccumulators are wild plants with small biomass and slow growth rates. Thus, remediation is slow. Here, we propose an effective intercropping system for remediation of As-contaminated paddy soil. Four treatments-intercropping with water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk) (T1), water celery (Oenanthe javanica (Blume) DC.) (T2), or Guangdong white arrowhead (Sagittaria sagittifolia L. var) (T3), with rice (Oryza sativa L.) monoculture (control, CK)-were used. Compared with the CK, grain yield per plant of rice under T1 and T2 increased by 58.13% and 10.48%, respectively, but decreased by 46.90% in T3. As concentration, bioaccumulation factor, and translocation factor in brown rice were significantly lower in the intercropping treatments than in CK. As removal by water spinach was 7.04 and 1.47 times that by water celery and arrowhead, respectively. The pH of paddy soil was significantly higher in all treatments than in CK, and iron plaque on rice roots under T1 and T2 decreased significantly but increased significantly under T3 compared with that of CK. Rice intercropped with water spinach had the best remediation effect. Novelty Statement: We believe that the following highlights of this manuscript will make it interesting to general readers of this journal.First, in recent years, many articles about intercropping system for the remediation of soil heavy metal pollution focus on dry land, and few studies have focused on paddy soil. The present study was on arsenic-contaminated paddy soil remediation.Second, water spinach, water celery, and arrowhead have great potential for phytoremediation. Studies have shown that these three aquatic vegetables play a role in the removal of certain pollutants, such as heavy metals. Moreover, when intercropped with rice, they can effectively increase rice yield and reduce rice diseases and insect pests. However, studies on remediation of arsenic-contaminated soil by intercropping aquatic vegetables and rice have not been reported. We propose here a rice-aquatic vegetables (water spinach, water celery and arrowhead) intercropping pattern for remediation of arsenic in soil.Third, according to the arsenic concentration and removal rate, we used a bioaccumulation factor, translocation factor, and arsenic removal per unit area of plants for the quantitative evaluation of the remediation effects of the intercropping systems. We found that the intercropping of rice and water spinach could be used to remediate arsenic-contaminated soil. Moreover, the extraction contents of arsenic using intercropping with water spinach was higher than that achieved in a previous study that applied intercropping with the arsenic hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata over the same growth time. This study provides a reference for realizing both remediation and increased production in arsenic-contaminated soil and for promoting sustainable development of agriculture.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: For people with metabolic syndrome (MetS), altering the macronutrient composition of their diets might ameliorate metabolic abnormalities. The common method of clinical assessment only measures total lipid concentrations but ignores the individual species that contribute to these total concentrations. Thus, to predict the amelioration of MetS following caloric restriction (CR) and the intake of fish oil, we used lipidomics to investigate changes in plasma lipids and identify potential lipid metabolites. METHODS: Lipidomics was performed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry on plasma samples from a clinical trial conducted over 12 weeks. Subjects were randomized into two groups: CR (n = 12) and CR with fish oil (CRF, n = 9). Anthropometric and clinical parameters were measured and correlated with plasma lipidomics data. RESULTS: Compared with baseline, significant differences were observed in body weight, waist circumference, blood pressure and interleukin-6 in both groups, but triglyceride (TG) levels significantly decreased in only the CRF group (all p < 0.05). A total of 138 lipid species were identified. Levels of species containing long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids were significantly elevated-greater than twofold-following fish oil intake, these included TG (60:9) and phosphatidylcholine (p40:6) (all q < 0.05). TG (60:9) tended to correlate negatively with body weight, body mass index, blood pressure, and HbA1c following fish oil intake. CONCLUSION: CR and fish oil can ameliorate MetS features, including anthropometric parameters, blood pressure, and blood lipid concentrations. The levels of particular lipid species such as TG-containing docosapentaenoic acid were elevated post-intervention and negatively associated with MetS features. TG (60:9) may be proposed as a lipid metabolite to predict amelioration in MetS following the intake of CR and fish oil.

RESUMEN

Objective: To investigate the effect of 6% hydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4(HES) on protein in severe trauma orthopedic patients after acute hemodilution. Methods: Fourty-eight severe trauma patients who met the inclusion criteria were selected from June 2018 to December 2018 in Yantaishan Hospital, and were randomly divided into two groups (n=24): group A and group B. Group A was ringer's sodium lactate control group, and group B was HES treatment group. After the tracheal intubation, the patients of group A were infused with 10% blood volume of sodium lactate ringer at 0.5 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1), and the patients in group B were infused with 10% blood volume of HES at 0.5 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1). Total protein (TP), human serum albumin (HSA), numbers of circulating endothelium cells (CEC), C-reactive protein (CRP), and serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-10 and IL-6 were measured immediately after acute hemodilution (T(0)), 24 hours (T(1)) and 48 hours (T(2)) after acute hemodilution. After infusion into human body, HES bond to HSA, and fluorescence spectroscopy was used to analyze the binding relationship between HES and HSA in order to further study the effects of HES on HSA. Results: The HSA, TP, CEC, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, CRP at T(0) of group A were (38±5) g/L, (66±5) g/L, (5.5±0.4)/0.9 µl, (24±5) µg/L, (8.9±0.8) µg/L, (44±6) µg/L, (13.6±1.4) mg/L; While at T(1) were (33±5) g/L, (60±6) g/L, (10.2±0.7)/0.9 µl, (87±9) µg/L, (38.8±2.3) µg/L, (57±7) µg/L, (23.4±2.4) mg/L. The HSA, TP, CEC, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, CRP at T(0) of group B were(38±4)g/L, (66±5) g/L, (5.4±0.6)/0.9 µl, (24±6) µg/L, (9.1±0.9) µg/L, (45±6) µg/L, (13.4±1.8) mg/L; While at T(1) were (35±5)g/L, (62±5)g/L, (7.4±0.6)/0.9 µl, (70±8) µg/L, (29.5±3.1) µg/L, (72±6) µg/L, (19.7±2.2) mg/L. HSA and TP decreased at T(1) in group A as compared with T(0) (P<0.05), contrarily CEC increased significantly at T(1), TNF-ɑ, IL-6, IL-10 and CRP augmented at T(1) and T(2) in two groups (P<0.05). In comparison with the patients of group A, CEC decreased significantly at T(1) (P<0.05). TNF-ɑ, IL-6, CRP reduced significantly at T(1) and T(2) (P<0.05), but IL-10 increased at T(1) and T(2) in group B (P<0.05). The secondary structure of HSA changed after HES was added in the HES solution. The fluorescence intensity of HSA decreased with the increase of HES concentration, which suggested that HES induced HSA fluorescence quenching. HES could bind to Trp-214 residue in HSA at a molecular ration of 1∶1. Conclusions: 6% HES reduces the occurrence of low protein level in severe trauma patients after operation. HES could bind to Trp-214 amino acid residue in HSA and form the complex at a molecular ratio of 1∶1. The formation of HES-HSA complex increases the volume of HES, avoids the vascular leakage, protects the vascular endothelial cells, and induces anti-inflammatory immunity in the patients with capillary syndrome.

RESUMEN

Much theoretical and experimental attention has been focused on the electrical switching of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Néel vector via spin-orbit torque. Measurements employing multiterminal patterned structures of Pt/AFM show recurring signals of the supposedly planar Hall effect and magnetoresistance, implying AFM switching. We show in this Letter that similar signals have been observed in structures with and without the AFM layer, and of an even larger magnitude using different metals and substrates. These may not be the conclusive evidence of spin-orbit torque switching of AFM, but the thermal artifacts of patterned metal structure on substrate. Large current densities in the metallic devices, beyond the Ohmic regime, can generate unintended anisotropic thermal gradients and voltages. AFM switching requires unequivocal detection of the AFM Néel vector before and after SOT switching.

RESUMEN

The first complete estimation of the compressible energy cascade rate |ϵ_{C}| at magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and subion scales is obtained in Earth's magnetosheath using Magnetospheric MultiScale spacecraft data and an exact law derived recently for compressible Hall MHD turbulence. A multispacecraft technique is used to compute the velocity and magnetic gradients, and then all the correlation functions involved in the exact relation. It is shown that when the density fluctuations are relatively small, |ϵ_{C}| identifies well with its incompressible analog |ϵ_{I}| at MHD scales but becomes much larger than |ϵ_{I}| at subion scales. For larger density fluctuations, |ϵ_{C}| is larger than |ϵ_{I}| at every scale with a value significantly higher than for smaller density fluctuations. Our study reveals also that for both small and large density fluctuations, the nonflux terms remain always negligible with respect to the flux terms and that the major contribution to |ϵ_{C}| at subion scales comes from the compressible Hall flux.

RESUMEN

AIM: To test the network degeneration hypothesis in multiple sclerosis (MS) with a two-stage coordinate-based meta-analysis by: (1) characterising regional selectivity of grey matter (GM) atrophy and (2) testing for functional connectivity involving these regions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Meta-analytic sources included 33 journal articles (1,666 MS patients and 1,269 healthy controls) with coordinate-based results from voxel-based morphometry analysis demonstrating GM atrophy. Mass univariate and multivariate coordinate-based meta-analyses were performed to identify a convergent pattern of GM atrophy and determine inter-regional co-activation (as a surrogate of functional connectivity), with anatomical likelihood estimation and functional meta-analytic connectivity modelling, respectively. RESULTS: Localised GM atrophy was demonstrated in the thalamus, putamen, caudate, sensorimotor cortex, insula, superior temporal gyrus, and cingulate gyrus. This convergent pattern of atrophy displayed significant inter-regional functional co-activations. CONCLUSION: In MS, GM atrophy was regionally selective, and these regions were functionally connected. The meta-analytic model-based results of this study are intended to guide future development of quantitative neuroimaging markers for diagnosis, evaluating disease progression, and monitoring treatment response.

RESUMEN

The first estimation of the energy cascade rate |ε_{C}| of magnetosheath turbulence is obtained using the Cluster and THEMIS spacecraft data and an exact law of compressible isothermal magnetohydrodynamics turbulence. The mean value of |ε_{C}| is found to be close to 10^{-13} J m^{-3} s^{-1}, at least 2 orders of magnitude larger than its value in the solar wind (∼10^{-16} J m^{-3} s^{-1} in the fast wind). Two types of turbulence are evidenced and shown to be dominated either by incompressible Alfvénic or compressible magnetosoniclike fluctuations. Density fluctuations are shown to amplify the cascade rate and its spatial anisotropy in comparison with incompressible Alfvénic turbulence. Furthermore, for compressible magnetosonic fluctuations, large cascade rates are found to lie mostly near the linear kinetic instability of the mirror mode. New empirical power-laws relating |ε_{C}| to the turbulent Mach number and to the internal energy are evidenced. These new findings have potential applications in distant astrophysical plasmas that are not accessible to in situ measurements.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the obstetric and surgical outcomes of a novel transendometrial approach for myomectomy during caesarean section in subsequent pregnancies. DESIGN: Longitudinal panel study. SETTING: Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan, with approximately 5000 births per annum. POPULATION: Pregnant women complicated with uterine myoma. METHOD: Sixty-three pregnant women who received transendometrial myomectomy during the first caesarean delivery reported a subsequent live pregnancy and planned an elective repeat caesarean delivery. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Obstetric outcomes consisted of gestational age at birth, newborn weight, Apgar score, birthweight adequacy, uterine rupture, placental abruption, placenta praevia, placenta accreta, spontaneous preterm birth and preterm premature rupture of membranes. Surgical outcomes consisted of surgical time, blood loss, blood transfusion, postoperative fever, length of hospital stay and mean adhesion score. RESULT: The mean gestational age at birth and newborn weight at the subsequent caesarean section were superior to those at the first caesarean delivery. Spontaneous preterm birth, small-for-gestational-age infants and preterm premature rupture of membranes occurred more often in the first pregnancy than in the subsequent pregnancy. The mean surgical time was shorter for the subsequent caesarean delivery than for the first caesarean delivery combined with myomectomy. The other surgical composite outcomes of blood loss, blood transfusion, postoperative fever, length of hospital stay and mean adhesion score were similar across the two stages of caesarean deliveries. CONCLUSION: The novel transendometrial approach for caesarean myomectomy may improve the obstetric outcomes of subsequent pregnancy without causing any additional immediate and long-term adverse surgical outcomes. TWEETABLE ABSTRACT: Transendometrial caesarean myomectomy may improve future obstetric outcomes.

RESUMEN

Limited information is available on the risks of epilepsy after surgery in patients receiving general or neuraxial anaesthesia. Using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, we identified 1,478,977 patients aged ≥ 20 years who underwent surgery (required general or neuraxial anaesthesia with hospitalisation for more than one day) between 2004 and 2011. We selected 235,066 patients with general anaesthesia and 235,066 patients with neuraxial anaesthesia using a frequency-matching procedure for age and sex. We did not study those with co-existing epilepsy-related risk factors. The adjusted rate ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of newly diagnosed epilepsy 1 year after surgery associated with general anaesthesia were analysed in the multivariate Poisson regression model. The one-year incidence of postoperative epilepsy for patients with general anaesthesia and neuraxial anaesthesia were 0.41 and 0.32 per 1000 persons, respectively, and the corresponding RR was 1.27 (95%CI 1.15-1.41). The association between general anaesthesia and postoperative epilepsy was significant in men (RR = 1.22; 95%CI 1.06-1.40), women (RR = 1.33; 95%CI 1.15-1.55) and 20-39-year-old patients. The risk of postoperative epilepsy increased in patients with general anaesthesia who had co-existing medical conditions and postoperative complications.

RESUMEN

This longitudinal study aimed to investigate the associations between the polymorphisms of guanine nucleotide-binding protein subunit ß-3 (GNB3) C825T and metabolic disturbance in bipolar II disorder (BP-II) patients being treated with valproate (VPA). A 100 BP-II patients received a 12-week course of VPA treatment, and their body weight and metabolic indices were measured. At baseline, the GNB3 C825T polymorphisms were associated with the triglyceride level (P=0.032) in BP-II patients. During the VPA treatment course, the polymorphisms were not only associated with body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (P-values=0.009 and 0.001, respectively), but also with total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein and leptin levels (P-values=0.004, 0.002, 0.031 and 0.015, respectively). Patients with the TT genotype had a lower BMI, smaller waist circumference, and lower levels of lipids and leptin than those with the CT or CC genotypes undergoing the VPA treatment course.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous ablation is a common treatment for colorectal liver metastasis (CLM). However, the effect of rat sarcoma viral oncogene homologue (RAS) mutation on outcome after ablation of CLMs is unclear. METHODS: Patients who underwent image-guided percutaneous ablation of CLMs from 2004 to 2015 and had known RAS mutation status were analysed. Patients were evaluated for local tumour progression as observed on imaging of CLMs treated with ablation. Multivariable Cox regression analysis was performed to determine factors associated with local tumour progression-free survival. RESULTS: The study included 92 patients who underwent ablation of 137 CLMs. Thirty-six patients (39 per cent) had mutant RAS. Rates of local tumour progression were 14 per cent (8 of 56) for patients with wild-type RAS and 39 per cent (14 of 36) for patients with mutant RAS (P = 0·007). The actuarial 3-year local tumour progression-free survival rate after percutaneous ablation was worse in patients with mutant RAS than in those with wild-type RAS (35 versus 71 per cent respectively; P = 0·001). In multivariable analysis, negative predictors of local tumour progression-free survival were a minimum ablation margin of less than 5 mm (hazard ratio (HR) 2·48, 95 per cent c.i. 1·31 to 4·72; P = 0·006) and mutant RAS (HR 3·01, 1·60 to 5·77; P = 0·001). CONCLUSION: Mutant RAS is associated with an earlier and higher rate of local tumour progression in patients undergoing ablation of CLMs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The nasal cavity is the main colonization site of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in human body. Nasal carriage may be a strong risk factor for some serious infection. There was still limited information about the nasal carriage for S. aureus in south China. METHODS: Sought to determine the prevalence and molecular characteristics of S. aureus nasal carriage, 295 volunteers residing on a medicine campus were investigated and sampled the nasal cavity swab. Selected S. aureus isolates were carried through molecular analysis, including pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), multilocus sequence analysis, staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) and virulence gene detection. RESULTS: A total of 73 S. aureus isolates were recovered from separate subjects (24.7%, 73/295), with one methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolate (0.3%, 1/295). Among the 73 isolates, 71 isolates were successfully grouped into 13 pulsotypes by PFGE analysis, with profiles A and L the most prevalent; 12 sequence types (STs) were found among the 23 isolates which had similar drug resistant spectrum. ST59, ST188 and ST1 were the most prevalent, accounting for 17.4, 13.0 and 13.0% of all isolates, respectively. The MRSA isolate presented ST8-SCCmec III. 56.5% of isolates carried both the staphylococcal enterotoxin A (sea) and enterotoxin B (seb) genes. 83.6% of the S. aureus isolates were resistant to penicillin, all isolates were susceptible to quinupristin/dalfopristin, levofloxacin, teicoplanin and vancomycin. The most common risk factors for S. aureus carriage were being male, age ≤30 years, and nasal cavity cleaning habits. CONCLUSIONS: Colonization by S. aureus was greater among male and young age (20-30 years) students and those with irregularity nasal cleaning. The S. aureus isolates selected were revealed into various sequence types and pulsotypes, indicating molecular heterogeneity among S. aureus isolates from the populations in the medical college in Guangzhou.

RESUMEN

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) surgeries successfully restore anterior tibial translation but not tibial rotation. This study aimed to explore landing strategies focusing on the control of tibial rotation at landing when the ACL is most vulnerable. Three groups of male subjects (50 ACLRs, 26 basketball players, and 31 controls) participated in one-leg forward hop tests for determining the tibial rotatory landing strategies adopted during the initial landing phase. The differences in knee kinematics and muscle activities between internal and external tibial rotatory (ITR, ETR) landing strategies were examined. A higher proportion of basketball players (34.6%) were found to adopt ITR strategies (controls: 6.5%), exhibiting significantly greater hopping distance and knee strength. After adjusting for hopping distance, subjects adopting ITR strategies were found to hop faster with straighter knees at foot contact and with greater ITR and less knee adduction angular displacement during the initial landing phase. However, significantly greater angular displacement in knee flexion, greater medial hamstring activities, and greater co-contraction index of hamstrings and medial knee muscles were also found during initial landing. Our results support the importance of the recruitments of medial hamstrings or the local co-contraction in assisting the rotatory control of the knee during initial landing for avoiding ACL injuries.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Patients on chronic haemodialysis (HD) have a higher incidence of cancer. However, the risk of skin cancer in this population has rarely been investigated. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) and cutaneous melanoma in patients on chronic HD and to explore the associated risk factors. METHODS: We performed retrospective cohort and nested case-control studies using records in the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database between 1999 and 2013. The HD cohort included 79 668 incident patients on HD, for whom the standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) for incident NMSC and cutaneous melanoma were determined. In the nested case-control study, patients on HD with NMSC were matched to those without skin cancers. The impact of various factors on the development of NMSC was determined by conditional logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Among the 79 668 patients on HD, 248 cases of NMSC and 22 cases of cutaneous melanoma occurred after a mean 4·95 years of follow-up. The SIRs for NMSC and cutaneous melanoma in patients on HD were 1·58 (95% confidence interval 1·39-1·79) and 1·44 (95% confidence interval 0·91-2·19), respectively. Of the patients on HD, a higher risk of NMSC was found in men (1·5-fold), South Taiwan residents (twofold) and patients with uraemic pruritus after long-term antihistamine treatment (1·53-fold). However, the incidence of NMSC was not increased in patients with uraemic pruritus receiving ultraviolet B phototherapy. CONCLUSIONS: Patients on chronic HD are at higher risk of NMSC. Uraemic pruritus further increases the risk of NMSC, which might be prevented by ultraviolet B phototherapy.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of monochromic light-emitting diode (LED) light with different color on the growth and reproductive performances of white Roman breeder geese. A randomized complete batch design was utilized for the trial, and the replicate was regarded as one batch. Twenty ganders and fifty-five dames were used in batch 1 (started on 2011/6/17 and ended on 2012/1/31), thirty ganders and eighty-four dames were used in batch 2 (started on 2012/3/23 and ended on 2012/10/26), and thirty ganders and seventy-two dames were used in batch 3 (started on 2013/3/12 and ended on 2013/12/20). Two hundred and ninety-one geese were randomly assigned to 6 rooms in an environmentally controlled house. They were randomly allotted into one of three monochromatic light treatments: Blue, red, or white. The results showed that there was no significant difference in body weight among the three lighting groups at any point throughout the experimental period. However, compared to the blue light group, significantly more eggs were produced by the red and white light groups (p<0.05). Furthermore, the laying period of the red light group was significantly longer than that of other two groups (p<0.05). In conclusion, our results suggested that red LED-light has the best effect on reproductive performance (i.e. longer laying period and higher total eggs number) at 30 lux light intensity, and is therefore a better choice for the management of breeding geese than blue or white LED-light.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is thought to be involved in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD) and metabolic syndrome. We investigated the correlation between plasma BDNF with mood symptoms and metabolic indices in patients with BD-II over a 12-week pharmacological intervention. METHOD: Drug-naïve patients with BD-II (n=117) were recruited. Metabolic profiles [cholesterol, triglyceride, HbA1C, fasting serum glucose, body mass index (BMI)] and plasma BDNF wtrun "tblautotrun "tblsctrun "tbl_contere measured at baseline and 2, 8, and 12 weeks after beginning medication. To adjust within-subject dependence over repeated assessments, multiple linear regressions with generalized estimating equation methods were used. RESULTS: Seventy-six (65.0%) patients completed the intervention. Plasma BDNF levels were significantly associated with BMI (P=9.6E-5), low-density lipoprotein (P=0.034) and total (P=0.001) cholesterol, but not with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-17 and Young Mania Rating Scale scores over the 12-week treatment. CONCLUSION: We found initial evidence of a positive correlation between plasma BDNF levels and BMI, low-density lipoprotein and total cholesterol in drug-naïve patients with BD-II. The specific function of BDNF in regulating and maintaining peripheral metabolic health requires additional investigation.

RESUMEN

In Taiwan, avian influenza virus (AIV) subtypes H5N2, H6N1 and H7N3 have been identified in domestic poultry, and several strains of these subtypes have become endemic in poultry. To evaluate the potential of avian-to-human transmission due to occupational exposure, an exploratory analysis of AIV antibody status in poultry workers was conducted. We enrolled 670 poultry workers, including 335 live poultry vendors (LPVs), 335 poultry farmers (PFs), and 577 non-poultry workers (NPWs). Serum antibody titres against various subtypes of viruses were analysed and compared. The overall seropositivity rates in LPVs and PFs were 2·99% (10/335) and 1·79% (6/335), respectively, against H5N2; and 0·6% (2/335) and 1·19% (4/335), respectively, for H7N3 virus. Of NPWs, 0·35% (2/577) and 0·17% (1/577) were seropositive for H5N2 and H7N3, respectively. Geographical analysis revealed that poultry workers whose workplaces were near locations where H5N2 outbreaks in poultry have been reported face greater risks of being exposed to viruses that result in elevated H5N2 antibody titres. H6N1 antibodies were detected in only one PF, and no H7N9 antibodies were found in the study subjects. Subclinical infections caused by H5N2, H6N1 and H7N3 viruses were thus identified in poultry workers in Taiwan. Occupational exposure is associated with a high risk of AIV infection, and the seroprevalence of particular avian influenza strains in humans reflects the endemic strains in poultry in this region.

RESUMEN

Parrots are one of the most popular pet birds in China, and can harbour Chlamydia which has significance for human and animal health. We investigated, by indirect haemagglutination assay, the seroprevalence of Chlamydia infection in four species of parrots, namely budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus), lovebirds (Agapornis sp.), cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) and Alexandrine parakeets (Psittacula eupatria) that were collected from Weifang and Beijing cities, North China and explored the association between potential risk factors and chlamydial seropositivity. We further determined the genotype of Chlamydia in 21 fresh faecal samples based on the ompA sequence by reconstruction of phylogenetic relationships. Of the 311 parrots examined, 35·37% (95% confidence interval 30·06-40·68) were seropositive, and species, gender, age, season and geographical location were identified as risk factors. Two PCR-positive samples represented Chlamydia psittaci genotype A. The occurrence of C. psittaci genotype A in the droppings of two pet parrots in China suggests potential environmental contamination with Chlamydiaceae and may raise a public health concern.
