PURPOSE: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is one of the major side effects and main reasons for affecting quality of life and dose reduction or even discontinuation of treatment in breast cancer patients. One of the most widely prescribed chemotherapies is the "taxanes." Considering that duloxetine has been used in treating neuropathies in recent years, this study aimed to investigate its effectiveness in preventing taxane-related neuropathy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a randomized controlled trial on 47 patients: 24 received a placebo and 23 received duloxetine at 30 mg daily in the first week following the injection of paclitaxel and 60 mg during the second week in each chemotherapy cycle. Patients objective (nerve conduction velocity (NCV) values) and subjective symptoms (visual analog scale including; neuropathy, paresthesia, pain, cold sensitivity, and numbness), the grades of the patients' neuropathy (calculated according to Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) v.5), and the presence of complications, before and after each chemotherapy cycle, were recorded. RESULTS: The placebo group experienced significantly higher occurrences of new neuropathy (8/23 in duloxetine vs 16/24 in placebo, P = 0.029) in NCV by tibial nerve latency (- 0.28% vs 19.87%, P = 0.006), tibial amplitude (4.40% vs - 10.88%, P = 0.049), and median nerve latency (8.72% vs 31.16%, P = 0.039); administration of duloxetine significantly reduced the scores of neuropathies (P < 0.001), pain (P = 0.027), during chemotherapy, and 6 weeks later; however, no significant effect was observed on paresthesia, numbness, cold sensitivity, and other NCV measurements. CONCLUSIONS: Paclitaxel can cause neuropathy, lasting for a long time. Our study showed duloxetine is potentially an effective medication that can prevent subjective and objective neuropathy.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most prevalent and the second fatal cancer in the world. Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are suggested to be related to various non-communicable diseases including cancers. However, studies on the relationship between UPFs and CRC are scarce. The aim of this study was to determine the association between consumption of UPFs and CRC. In a case-control study conducted in four hospitals in Tehran, Iran, consumption of UPFs in 71 CRC patients and 142 controls (patients with non-neoplastic diseases) were compared. Using 125-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, dietary intakes were assessed. We used Multivariate logistic regression to estimate the association between UPFs intake and risk of CRC. Intake of nondairy beverages (P = 0.009), processed meat and fast food (P = 0.04) was significantly higher in those in the highest tertile of UPFs intake compared to the lowest tertile. In addition, intake of UPFs was associated with higher risk of CRC. The association remained constant after adjustment for BMI, income, smoking, type of job, educational level, and physical activity (OR, 3.32; 95% CI, 1.44-7.61; P = 0.003). Results of this study indicate that the intake of UPFs is associated with increased odds of CRC.

Background: Considering the increasing use of the Internet in Iranian society, especially among students, and the importance of sleep quality, the present study investigated the relationship between sleep quality and Internet addiction among medical students in Shiraz. Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study, the sample included students of the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences who were selected by a multistage sampling method in 2018. Each faculty was considered to be stratified, and the samples were selected from all strata by simple random sampling. A total of 400 student questionnaires were eligible for analysis. The level of sleep disturbance was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT) was used to evaluate Internet addiction. Cronbach's alpha for PSQI and IAT was 0.77 and 0.93, respectively. Results: 109 (%28.9) and 58 (%14.4) of all the people under study were at risk of Internet addiction or poor sleep quality, respectively. The highest percentage of poor sleep quality was in those who were addicted to the Internet (60%), but the lowest percentage was observed in the group without addiction (27%). In addition, there was a significant correlation between Internet addiction and subjective sleep quality (r = 0.191, p = 0.05), sleep latency (r = 0.129, p = 0.01), sleep duration (r = 0.119, p = 0.01), habitual sleep efficiency (r = 0.186, p = 0.05), sleep disturbances (r = 0.169, p = 0.01), use of sleeping medication (r = 0.203, p = 0.05), and daytime dysfunction (r = 0.188, p = 0.05). Conclusion: These findings help national health officials and planners in Iran to design appropriate and effective interventions to improve students' health and prevent Internet addiction.

Plant-based diets (PBDs) have gained a positive reputation among experts as a solution to combat the epidemic of MetS. A total of 2225 healthy Iranian individuals aged 35-70 years were considered eligible to be included in this cross-sectional investigation. Various dietary, anthropometric, and biochemical assessments were conducted using standard, valid methods/tools. Relevant PBD scores were calculated using three a posteriori indices, including the overall plant-based diet index (PDI), healthful PDI (hPDI), and unhealthful PDI (uPDI). Our findings showed that women with the highest adherence to hPDI had a lower chance of MetS. Also, participants in the top tertiles of hPDI were more likely to have a lower risk of low serum HDL-c and abnormal glucose homeostasis. Additionally, a significant increasing trend was observed for low serum HDL-c across tertiles of uPDI. Our observations suggest that healthful-rich plant foods may have a protective effect against MetS, especially in women.

Background: Despite the significant role of the Fat Mass and Obesity-Associated (FTO) gene in obesity, the underlying mechanisms are not fully elucidated. Besides, vitamin D deficiency and obesity are mostly seen together, and it can be hypothesized that this nutrient may have an impact in the role of FTO genotype in adiposity.Objective: Thus, this study aimed to investigate the association of FTO rs9939609 gene polymorphism with eating behaviors, eating disorders, and general mental health in overweight adults, considering their vitamin D intake as a mediate confounding factor.Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 197 overweight adults in Shiraz, Iran. Genotyping was performed through amplification refractory mutation system polymerase chain reaction (ARMS PCR). Mental health, vitamin D intake, eating behaviors and disorders were assessed by the validated questionnaires.Results: The risk allele of the FTO rs9939609 polymorphism (A) was significantly associated with a higher risk of eating behavior and mental health disorders (all P < 0.05). After considering vitamin D intake, the AA genotype carriers had significantly higher risks for poorer eating behavior (P = 0.002), mental health (P = 0.007), and general mental health (P = 0.039) compared with the TT carriers if they had insufficient vitamin D intake.Conclusion: In conclusion, these results indicated that the A-allele of the FTO rs9939609 polymorphism may be associated with poorer eating behaviors, mental health, and higher risk of eating disorders. It was also identified that the effect of FTO rs9939609 A risk allele on eating behavior and mental health may be limited to people with insufficient vitamin D intake.

BACKGROUND: Kidney stone is the major cause of morbidity, and its prevalence is increasing in the world. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors of kidney stone in the adult population of southern Iran based on the data of the Kharameh Cohort Study. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 10,663 individuals aged 40-70 years old, using the baseline data of Kharamah cohort study, which started in 2014. Among all participants, 2251 individuals had a history of kidney stone. The participants' demographic characteristics, behavioral habits, and the history of underlying diseases were investigated. The crude and Age Standardized Prevalence Rate of kidney stones was calculated. Also, logistic regression was used to identify the predictors of kidney stone. To check the goodness of fit index of the model, we used the Hosmer-Lemeshow test. All analyses were performed in STATA software. RESULTS: The prevalence of kidney stone was estimated 21.11%. Also, the Age Standardized Prevalence Rate in men and women was calculated 24.3% and 18.7%, respectively. The mean age of the participants was 52.15 years. Higher prevalence of kidney stone was seen in women aged 40-50 years (40.47%, p = 0.0001) and moderate level of social economic status (31.47%, p = 0.03), men with overweight (44.69%, p < 0.0001) and those in a very high level of social economic status (35.75%, p = 0.001). The results of multiple logistic regression showed that the chance of having kidney stone was 1.17 times higher in diabetic individuals, 1.43 times higher in hypertensive individuals, 2.21 times higher in individuals with fatty liver, and 1.35 times higher in individuals with overweight. The level of socio economic status, male sex, and age were the other factors related to kidney stone. CONCLUSION: In this study, underlying diseases such as fatty liver, diabetes, and hypertension as well as age, male sex, overweight, and high social economic status were identified as important risk factors for kidney stone. Therefore, identifying individuals at risk of kidney stone and providing the necessary training can greatly help to reduce this disease. However, health policymakers should prepare preventive strategies to reduce the occurrence of kidney stone.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic restrictions curtailed physical activity. The current study applied an integrated Theory of Planned Behavior to identify the determinants of physical activity behavior and the processes involved in the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Shiraz city, Southern Iran, among 2500 people who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. Data were collected using the demographic information questions and questionnaire based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) constructs. The Questionnaire via WhatsApp, emails, and SMS was shared. Data analysis was performed using SPSS26 and Amos version 24. Mean and standard deviation was used to describe the data. Also, one-way ANOVA and structural equation analysis were used to analyze the data. The significance level in all the tests was considered to be 0.05. RESULTS: One thousand one hundred sixty-nine samples (46.8%) said they had been exercising less than 3 days a week, and 47.6% of them did not have any exercise or physical activities (n = 1191). The mean score of attitudes, SN, PBC, and intention were 9.38 ± 2.07, 9.27 ± 2.03, 9.32 ± 2.05, and 12.29 ± 2.35, respectively. The effect size values demonstrate the independent variables' high coefficient of influence on explaining the theoretical model. According to the results, the factors play an important role in samples' intention (η2 ≥ 0.2, p ≤ 0.05). The effect size of intention on doing physical activities and exercise during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is Eta square = 0.777, which means the measure was high. The obtained model was good based on the main goodness of fit indices (Chi2 = 108.6, df = 25, n = 2500, Chi2/df = 4.344, RMSEA = 0.036, AGFI = 0.92, CFI = 0.95, GFI = 0.90, Fornell-Larcker criterion = 0.87, HTMT = 0.89). CONCLUSION: The TPB provides a useful framework to explore psychosocial determinants of physical activity behavior during the pandemic and identify key strategies for program planning aimed at improving exercise among people who were already influenced by quarantine and lockdown restrictions.

BACKGROUND: Given that COVID-19 continues to spread worldwide, attempts to restrain the virus and to prevent the effects that critically ill patients with COVID-19 have on healthcare systems, has become a public health priority. This ecological study aimed to investigate the correlation between the Human Development Index (HDI) and the epidemiological indicators of COVID-19, including the cumulative incidence rate of cases, the cumulative incidence rate of death, performed COVID-19 tests per million, recovery rate, and case fatality rate. METHODS: In this ecological study, a data set was provided, which included the epidemiologic indices of COVID-19, HDI, and its components for each country. Correlation coefficients were used to determine linear correlation. Also, the scatter plots of the HDI for the studied countries based on the epidemiologic indices of COVID-19 were drawn. RESULTS: This study showed that HDI and its components had positive correlation with a cumulative incidence rate of cases, the cumulative incidence rate of death, and performed COVID-19 tests (p < 0.001). HDI and two of its components, including literacy and Gross National Income (GNI) components had negative correlation with case fatality rate (CFR). Also, HDI and two of its components, including literacy and life expectancy components had negative correlation with recovery rate. CONCLUSION: Our study showed that the HDI and its components can affect the epidemiological status of COVID-19. As HDI increased, the cumulative incidence rate of cases, cumulative incidence rate of death, and COVID-19 tests increased as well. As HDI increased, CFR and recovery rate decreased as well. Although the HDI is higher in high-income countries, these countries may have also better reporting and surveillance systems.

BACKGROUND: This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis on published studies about the Global Survival Rate of Graft and Patients in the Kidney Transplantation of children. METHODS: Studies that investigated the survival rate of kidney transplants published until the 30th of December 2020 were selected using a systematic search strategy in the following databases: Medline, Embase, Scopus, ProQuest, ISI Web of Science, and Cochrane. The extracted data were entered into the Excel software and STATA 16.0. The search identified 6007 study references. From the total, we excluded 1348 duplicates, 3688 reference titles and abstracts that were deemed irrelevant, and 846 references that were not original articles (i.e., letter, commentary, review) or did not meet the inclusion criteria. As such, 89 studies involving 12,330 participants were included in this meta-analysis. RESULTS: In this study 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10-year survival rates of graft were estimated to be 92, 83, 74.40, 67.10, and 63.50%, respectively. Also, 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10-year survival rates of patients were estimated to be 99.60, 97.30, 95.20, 74.60, and 97.90%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest differences in graft and patient survival among children with kidney transplants. Although differences in ethnic origin, incompatibility with deceased donor kidneys, and types of kidney disease are unavoidable, interventions to improve preventive and living-donor transplantation are particularly needed in minority groups. In addition, more research is needed to establish and address the contribution of medical and sociocultural barriers to preferential treatment of these groups.

Human sperm cryopreservation is a way to preserve sperm in the clinic. But, the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during cryopreservation, has certain negative impacts on the quality of sperm and its reproductive capacity. The goal of this study is to see how sperm cryopreserved in media enriched with gallic acid alter post-thaw morphology, motility, viability, DNA structure, and plasma membrane lipid peroxidation. Four groups were considered for performing this study: (1) Fresh sperm before cryopreservation; (2) cryopreserved control sperm without any supplementation; (3) cryopreserved sperm using freezing media supplemented with 50 µg/ml gallic acid and (4) cryopreserved sperm using freezing media supplemented with 100 µg/ml gallic acid. This study's results indicated that the addition of doses of 50 µg/ml gallic acid to cryopreservation medium significantly improved sperm morphology, motility, vitality, and DNA integrity and reduced DNA fragmentation and lipid peroxidation as compared to the medium without any gallic acid supplementation (p < 0.05); but, the concentration of 100 µg/ml gallic acid had no significant effects on the mentioned sperm parameters (p > 0.05). This study's findings represent the possibility of enhancing sperm characteristics and lowering detrimental effects of ROS on sperm DNA structure during cryopreservation by supplementing sperm freezing medium with gallic acid as a natural antioxidant. Therefore, Gallic acid may help improve the quality and subsequently fertilization potential of cryopreserved human sperm.

Background: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of brachytherapy (BT) customized mold [Condensation silicone elastomer (ProtesilTM)] and its thickness on the dose distribution pattern of deep nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSC). Materials and methods: Four blocks of mold material were constructed in 5, 10, 15, and 20 mm thickness and 100 × 100 mm2 area by a plastic cast. The high dose rate (HDR) plus treatment planning system (TPS) (Version 3, Eckert & Ziegler BEBIG Gmbh, Berlin, Germany) with a 60Co source (model: Co0.A86, EZAG BEBIG, Berlin, Germany) as an high dose rate brachytherapy (HDR-BT) source was used. Solid phantom and MOSFETTM and GAFCHROMICTM EBT3 film dosimeters were used for experimental dosimetry of the different thicknesses (up to 20 mm) of BT customized mold. Skin dose and dose to different depths were evaluated. Result: The TPS overestimated the calculated dose to the surface. Skin dose can be reduced from 250% to 150% of the prescription dose by increasing mold thickness from 5 mm to 20 mm. There was a 7.7% difference in the calculated dose by TPS and the measured dose by MOSFET. There was a good agreement between film dosimetry, MOSFET detector, and TPS' results in depths less than 5 mm. Conclusion: Each BT department should validate any individualized material chosen to construct the customized surface BT mold. Increasing the mold thickness can treat lesions without overexposing the skin surface. Superficial BT can be recommended as an appropriate treatment option for some deep NMSC lesions (up to 20 mm) with pre-planning considerations employing thicker molds.

The use of chemotherapy medicines for breast cancer (BC) has been associated with an increased risk of cardiotoxicity. In recent years, there have been growing interests regarding the application of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging, a safe and noninvasive modality, with the potential to identify subtle morphological and functional changes in the myocardium. In this investigation, we aimed to review the performance of various CMR methods in diagnosing cardiotoxicity in BC, induced by chemotherapy or radiotherapy. For this purpose, we reviewed the literature available in PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases. Our literature review showed that CMR is a valuable modality for identifying and predicting subclinical cardiotoxicity induced by chemotherapy. The novel T1, T2, and extracellular volume mapping techniques may provide critical information about cardiotoxicity, in addition to other CMR features such as functional and structural changes. However, further research is needed to verify the exact role of these methods in identifying cardiotoxicity and patient management. Since multiple studies have reported the improvement of left ventricular performance following the termination of chemotherapy regimens, CMR remains an essential imaging tool for the prediction of cardiotoxicity and, consequently, decreases the mortality rate of BC due to heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Since the COVID-19 outbreak, pulmonary involvement was one of the most significant concerns in assessing patients. In the current study, we evaluated patient's signs, symptoms, and laboratory data on the first visit to predict the severity of pulmonary involvement and their outcome regarding their initial findings. METHODS: All referred patients to the COVID-19 clinic of a tertiary referral university hospital were evaluated from April to August 2020. Four hundred seventy-eight COVID-19 patients with positive real-time reverse-transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) or highly suggestive symptoms with computed tomography (CT) imaging results with typical findings of COVID-19 were enrolled in the study. The clinical features, initial laboratory, CT findings, and short-term outcomes (ICU admission, mortality, length of hospitalization, and recovery time) were recorded. In addition, the severity of pulmonary involvement was assessed using a semi-quantitative scoring system (0-25). RESULTS: Among 478 participants in this study, 353 (73.6%) were admitted to the hospital, and 42 (8.7%) patients were admitted to the ICU. Myalgia (60.4%), fever (59.4%), and dyspnea (57.9%) were the most common symptoms of participants at the first visit. A review of chest CT scans showed that Ground Glass Opacity (GGO) (58.5%) and consolidation (20.7%) were the most patterns of lung lesions. Among initial clinical and laboratory findings, anosmia (P = 0.01), respiratory rate (RR) with a cut point of 25 (P = 0.001), C-reactive protein (CRP) with a cut point of 90 (P = 0.002), white Blood Cell (WBC) with a cut point of 10,000 (P = 0.009), and SpO2 with a cut point of 93 (P = 0.04) was associated with higher chest CT score. Lung involvement and consolidation lesions on chest CT scans were also associated with a more extended hospitalization and recovery period. CONCLUSIONS: Initial assessment of COVID-19 patients, including symptoms, vital signs, and routine laboratory tests, can predict the severity of lung involvement and unfavorable outcomes.

RESUMEN

Metabolic syndrome is a pathological condition characterized by diabetes with insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. A wide body of research is emerging on Glycyrrhiza glabra L. (licorice) as a traditional herb with various therapeutic effects. Animal and human studies have indicated that licorice affects blood glucose, blood lipid profile, and blood pressure. Licorice seems to be effective in hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia; however, it can increase blood pressure. In this study, we intend to explain its role in regard with metabolic syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The effect of voglibose on metabolic homeostasis is not well characterized. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials assessing the effect of voglibose on metabolic profile in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Google Scholar, Web of Science and Cochrane Library to identify clinical trials assessing the effects of voglibose supplementation on cardio-metabolic profile from incept up to 29 July 2019. Data was pooled using fixed- or random-effect models and weighted mean difference (WMD) as the effect size. RESULTS: Eight clinical trials from 1094 reports, were eligible for inclusion. Pooled findings identified significant reductions in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) (WMD= -0.27; 95 %CI -0.49 to -0.05; P = 0.01; I2 = 64.8 %) and an increase in LDL-cholesterol levels (WMD=5.97 mg/dl, 95 % CI 0.88, 11.06, P = 0.02; I2 = 0.0 %). However, no evidence of effect for voglibose intake on T2DM patients was observed for: fasting blood sugar (FBS) (WMD -7.43 mg/dl; 95 %CI -16.56 to 1.71; P = 0.110; I2 = 69.3 %), serum insulin (WMD= -0.15 µU/mL; 95 %CI -0.89 to 0.60; P = 0.70; I2 = 0.0 %), total-cholesterol (WMD=2.82 mg/dl, 95 %CI -2.36 to 8.01, P = 0.70; I2 = 49.7 %), triglycerides (WMD= -7.07 mg/dl, 95 %CI -21.76 to 7.62, P = 0.34; I2 = 0.0 %), HDL-cholesterol levels (WMD= -2.10 mg/dl, 95 %CI -4.48 to 0.27, P = 0.08; I2 = 0.0 %,), body mass index (BMI) (WMD=0.09 kg/m2, 95 %CI -0.70 to 0.87; P = 0.87; I2 = 0.0 %), body weight (WMD= -0.42 kg, 95 %CI -0.84 to 0.00; P = 0.05; I2 = 0.0 %), and adiponectin levels (WMD = 0.32 µg/mL, 95 %CI -0.74 to 1.38; P = 0.55; I2 = 0.0 %). CONCLUSIONS: The current meta-analysis identified a decrease in HbA1c and an increase in LDL-cholesterol with administration of voglibose. However, no significant effect was observed on FBS, insulin, bodyweight, BMI, adiponectin, triglycerides, total- and HDL-cholesterol levels.

INTRODUCTION: Premenstrual syndrome is a prevalent disorder affecting a large number of women in their reproductive ages. Nutritional importance of zinc has been known for a long time and studies have shown that zinc can positively affect psychological disorders. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of zinc supplementation on quality of life and sleep quality of young women diagnosed with premenstrual syndrome. METHODS: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was carried out on 60 young university women that were allocated into two groups of intervention who took 30 mg/day of elemental zinc or placebo for three months. Pre- and post-intervention, participants completed the questionnaires of quality of life and Pittsburgh sleep quality. RESULTS: After supplementation, quality of life score in the intervention group was increased (+ 9.185 ± 7.29, P < 0.001), however, in comparison with the control group, results were not significant; Physical aspects of quality of life score were significantly enhanced (+ 5.55 ± 3.71 vs. + 0.13 ± 2.87, P < 0.001). Sleep quality was marginally improved just in the zinc group (- 1.48 ± 4.12, P = 0.07). CONCLUSION: Zinc supplementation for 12 weeks had beneficial effects on physical aspects of quality of life in young women with premenstrual syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a common disorder which affects quality of life. There has been an increasing interest for discovering the association of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders with migraine during past years. This study aims to evaluate the association of Helicobacter pylori contamination, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastric ulcer (GU), and duodenal ulcer (DU) with migraine in patients who underwent upper GI endoscopy due to refractory dyspepsia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this observational cross-sectional study, 341 dyspeptic patients who underwent upper GI endoscopy in Shahid Beheshti Hospital, Qom, Iran, included during 2016-2018. A checklist was used for collecting demographics, symptoms, and results from endoscopy and H. pylori testing. Diagnosis of migraine was made according to the International Headache Society criteria in patients who had headache. Data were analyzed using Chi-square and independent samples t-tests in SPSS 16 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) with P < 0.05 as significance level. RESULTS: Among 341 patients, 141 (% 41.3) were male and 200 (58.7%) were female. 149 (43.7%) patients were diagnosed with migraine, from which 48 (32.2%) were male and 101 (67.8%) were female. The observed difference in migraine prevalence among male and female was statistically significant (P = 0.003). 198 (58.06%) patients were H. pylori contaminated, among these 138 (69.7%) suffered from migraine. Among 143 H. pylori-negative patients, there were 11 (7.7%) migraineurs. The difference in the prevalence of migraine among H. pylori positive and negative patients was significant. H. pylori and GERD were associated with migraine with P < 0.001. Patients with DU were more commonly suffering from migraine (P = 0.001). The association in patients with GU was not statistically significant (P = 0.863). CONCLUSION: Migraine might be associated with GERD, H. pylori infection, and DU, and the treatment of the underlying GI disorder may control headaches.

An eleven weeks feeding trial was conducted to determine the effects of different levels of dietary soybean lecithin (SBL) on growth performance, blood chemistry and immunity in juvenile stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus). Fish were fed seven isoproteic (44% crude protein) and isolipidic (17% crude fat) diets containing graded levels of SBL: 0 (control), 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10%. Results showed that dietary SBL supplementation significantly improved the final body weight (BW) and weight gain (WG). Fish fed 6% SBL showed the highest BW and WG values in comparison to fish fed the control diet (P < 0.05), whereas increasing SBL levels above 6% had little practical benefit in terms of somatic growth performance. The inclusion of SBL in diets significantly improved the immune response as data from lysozyme, total Ig levels, alternative complement, phagocytic and bactericidal activities indicated (P < 0.05). The broken-line regression analysis of immunological variable revealed that depending on the parameter considered, the optimal SBL levels in diets for stellate sturgeon juveniles varied. In particular, dietary SBL levels requirements in stellate sturgeon when considering the phagocytic activity rate were determined at 3.3%, whereas 4.1-4.2% were recommended when considering data from lysozyme, alternative complement and bactericidal activities. In contrast, the highest minimum dietary SBL content was estimated at 6.9% when data from total Ig levels were considered. These results indicated that dietary PLs are required for boosting innate immunity in stellate sturgeon, although their minimal level changed depending on the immunological parameter considered. Therefore, we assume that SBL levels comprised between 3.3 and 6.9% may be used as a prophylactic measure to improve the health status in stellate sturgeon. Red blood cell count, hemoglobin and hematocrit levels increased with increasing dietary SBL levels, especially in those sturgeons fed the diet with 6% SBL (P < 0.05). In addition, white blood cell counts significantly increased as dietary SBL levels increased from 4 to 8% in comparison to the control group. Blood biochemistry was also affected by different dietary SBL levels. In particular, significantly higher levels of glucose, cholesterol, HDL and triglycerides were detected in fish fed >6%, >4%, >2% and 2% SBL, respectively (P < 0.05). Based on somatic growth parameters, blood chemistry and systemic immunity parameters, diets containing ca. 6% SBL are recommended for juvenile stellate sturgeon.

BACKGROUND: Preventive behaviors regarding cervical cancer are essential for women's health. Even though many studies have addressed women's knowledge and attitudes toward cervical cancer, little information is available about their experiences of cervical cancer-preventive behaviors. Thus, the aim of this study is to explore the perceptions and experiences of Iranian women regarding cervical cancer-preventive behaviors. METHODS: This study used a qualitative approach and was conducted in Zanjan, Iran. Participants included 27 women, aged 20-60 years, with no previous history of cervical cancer symptoms or diagnosis. Data were obtained through semi-structured in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. Inductive qualitative content analysis was employed to converge and compare themes through participant data. RESULTS: The following six main themes emerged from the analysis: attitudes toward cervical cancer and preventive behaviors, preventive behaviors' concept, self-care, religion and culture, perceived social support, and awareness about cervical cancer and preventive behavior. The findings revealed that several women had misconceptions about cervical cancer and were even superstitious about the causes of it. Fear, shame, and embarrassment were reasons for not undertaking cervical cancer screening. Cervical cancer was also linked to worries about decreased marital satisfaction, sexuality, and femininity. However, religion was considered a positive factor to conducting cancer-preventive behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that improving knowledge about the causes of cervical cancer, increasing awareness of the potential consequences of it, and creating positive attitudes toward screening behavior might encourage Iranian women to perform cervical cancer-preventive behaviors.
