RESUMEN

We used data from a national survey to examine arrest rate disparities between African American and White adolescents (aged 12-17 years; n=6725) in relation to drug-related and other illegal behaviors. African American adolescents were less likely than Whites to have engaged in drug use or drug selling, but were more likely to have been arrested. Racial disparities in adolescent arrest appear to result from differential treatment of minority youths and to have long-term negative effects on the lives of affected African American youths.

AIM: The aim of the study was to examine, among hospital employees exposed to an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), post-outbreak levels of depressive symptoms and the relationship between those depressive symptom levels and the types of outbreak event exposures experienced. METHODS: In 2006, randomly selected employees (N = 549) of a hospital in Beijing were surveyed concerning their exposures to the city's 2003 SARS outbreak and the ways in which the outbreak had affected their mental health. Subjects were assessed on sociodemographic factors, on types of exposure to the outbreak, and on symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder and depression. RESULTS: The results of multinomial regression analyses showed that, with other relevant factors controlled for, being single, having been quarantined during the outbreak, having been exposed to other traumatic events before SARS, and perceived SARS-related risk level during the outbreak were found to increase the odds of having a high level of depressive symptoms 3 years later. Altruistic acceptance of risk during the outbreak was found to decrease the odds of high post-outbreak depressive symptom levels. CONCLUSIONS: Policy makers and mental health professionals working to prepare for potential disease outbreaks should be aware that the experience of being quarantined can, in some cases, lead to long-term adverse mental health consequences.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: A phase 1 trial of adeno-associated virus based HIV-1 subtype C vaccine (tgAAC09) was conducted at two sites in Germany and Belgium and one site in India. This paper reports the safety and immunogenicity of tgAAC09 in healthy adult Indian volunteers. METHODS: Between January 2005 and December 2006, 30 consenting volunteers were enrolled in the placebo controlled double-blind dose-escalation trial [3x10(9), 3x10(10) and 3x10(11) DNase resistant particles (DRPs)/ml]. Single injection of the candidate vaccine was administered to ten volunteers randomized in 8:2 ratio in vaccine and placebo arms at each dosage level. RESULTS: The mean age of study volunteers (16 men and 14 women) was 34 yr. Six local reactogenicity events and 14 systemic reactogenicity events like malaise, fever, headache and myalgia were reported, both were dose-dependent. The difference between the adverse events reported by vaccine and placebo recipients (79 and 67%) was not significant. A modest IFN-gamma ELISPOT response [248 spot forming units (SFU)/million cells] was detected in one volunteer from high dose group and low response (56 and 75 SFU/million cells) in two volunteers in low and mid-dose groups. A post-vaccination dose-dependent increase was observed in anti AAV2 neutralizing titres. None of the volunteers showed a positive antibody response to HIV-1. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSIONS: The trial was a benchmark in phase I clinical evaluation of HIV candidate vaccines in India. The vaccine was generally well tolerated and raised no safety concerns. The vaccine was found to be weakly immunogenic. It is essential to understand the role of pre-existing immunity against vectors and significance of evaluation in a prime-boost strategy.

The results presented in this work show for the first time that an electric field used to macroscopically align polymer nanofibers can also align polymer chains parallel to the fiber axis. This important result indicates that anisotropic structural properties (mechanical, electrical, etc.) can be induced in polymer nanofibers during the electrospinning process. Such uniaxially oriented nanofibers exhibit a variety of potential applications in biomedicine, microelectronics, and optics. A simple technique of vertical electrospinning with an electric field induced, stationary collection was employed to obtain the molecular orientation in polymer nanofibers. This manuscript describes the orientation process via electrospinning and verifies this molecular orientation in the polymer nanofibers using three independent methods: polarized Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, polarized Raman scattering, and X-ray diffraction.
