RESUMEN

A 5-year-old intact male mixed-breed cat weighing 4.5 kg was referred to our hospital with a left testicular mass. CT revealed mild heterogeneous contrast enhancement and calcification in the testicular mass. A well-defined, contrast-enhancing, multiloculated mass with fluid-filled areas was extended from the testicular mass in the scrotum to the caudal aspect of the left kidney. The abdominal mass extended to the right crus of the diaphragm, and the gastrointestinal tract was compressed dorsally. Histopathology was consistent with teratoma. Characteristic CT findings in a feline testicular teratoma may include calcification and cystic areas.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hydration is one parameter of skin barrier function. The Skicon-200EX® and Corneometer CM825® are hygrometers used to measure skin hydration in humans based on different measurement methods. The ASA-MX3® is a hygrometer used to obtain measurements at haired skin sites in humans. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To validate three hygrometers to measure skin dryness in dogs. ANIMALS: Six clinically normal research dogs. METHODS: In vivo evaluation of three hygrometers for three different skin types was performed. Measurement of hydration was performed at five different regional sites. Dry and moist skin were induced by treatment with a sorbent and petrolatum, respectively, and measurements were collected for 120 min. Skin sites with three different hair lengths were evaluated to determine whether hair would interfere with hydration measurements. RESULTS: All three hygrometers obtained measurements at the nonhaired skin sites, except the ASA-MX3® hygrometer at the ear site. At the dry skin sites the Skicon-200EX® hygrometer detected a significant decrease of water content for longer than the other devices. At the moist skin sites the Corneometer CM825® and ASA-MX3® hygrometers showed a significant increase in water content. The ASA-MX3® hygrometer was the only device that could obtain measurements at sites with hair. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: The Skicon-200EX® hygrometer was the most sensitive for detecting skin dryness, whereas the Corneometer CM825® and ASA-MX3® hygrometers detected an emollient effect. Only the ASA-MX3® could provide measurements at the haired sites. This study may assist in the selection of a hygrometer based on the purpose of use.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To report appositional augmentation of Achilles tendon rupture in a toy breed dog with an intact flexor digitorum lateralis (FDL) muscle tendon. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical case report. ANIMALS: Two-year-old spayed female Toy Poodle with Achilles tendon rupture. METHODS: The Achilles tendon was accidentally ruptured by hair clippers during grooming. The dog demonstrated a plantigrade stance without digital flexion of the right hind limb. The ruptured gastrocnemius and superficial digital flexor tendons were sutured to their respective cut ends using a simple locking loop pattern under a surgical microscope. The repair site was appositionally augmented by the caudally retracted intact FDL. An aluminum splint was applied on the plantar aspect to immobilize the tarsal joint for the first 2 weeks, after which a soft bandage was applied for another 2 weeks. RESULTS: At the 7 month follow-up no lameness was detected during walking and no complications associated with decreased FDL function such as digital contracture were observed. The range of motion of the tarsal joint had improved and could be flexed to ∼60° and extended fully. CONCLUSION: Use of the FDL is feasible for augmenting Achilles tendon repair in toy breed dogs.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To document the trochlear depth (TD) and clinical outcome after kite shield-shaped wedge (K-wedge) recession trochleoplasty in toy-breed dogs with medial patellar luxation (MPL). STUDY DESIGN: Case series. ANIMALS: Seven toy-breed dogs (<5 kg) with uni- or bilateral grades II-IV MPL (10 stifles). METHODS: A K-wedge recession trochleoplasty was performed in all dogs in combination with other surgical procedures as treatment for MPL. The TD, the ratio of the proximal TD to patella thickness, and the presence of osteophytes were determined from computed tomography images taken pre-, and 1 and 12 months postoperative. Lameness scores and MPL grade were also recorded. RESULTS: The TD and the ratio of proximal TD to patella thickness increased significantly immediately postoperative and remained increased at 1 and 12 months postoperative. The osteophyte score was significantly higher at 12 months postoperative than preoperative. All dogs had a reduction in MPL grade and improvement in lameness postoperative. CONCLUSION: K-wedge recession trochleoplasty was successful in treating MPL in a series of toy-breed dogs and offers an alternate to other trochlear recession techniques.

RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to establish an evaluation technique for the feline pelvic cavity using computed tomography (CT). Client-owned cats with a normal pelvis (n = 50) or pelvic stenosis (n = 3) were included. We categorized pelvic CT images in the normal pelvis group into two types according to pelvic cavity shape, then calculated the sacral index (SI), pelvic canal area (PCA), and PCA/sacral width index (PSI). The reference intervals of these variables were determined based on the results in the normal pelvis group. In the normal pelvis group, the PSI, unlike the SI and PCA, was not affected by body weight. In addition to high intraobserver and interobserver reproducibilities, the PSI showed no significant differences according to pelvic cavity shape. However, the SI exhibited significant differences among pelvic cavity shapes. In the stenosis group, the postoperative PSI in all cats was within the reference interval. However, the postoperative SI in one case was lower than the reference interval. The PSI may become a new method for evaluation of the pelvic cavity, including the pelvic floor.

RESUMEN

Here we report a case series of two dogs diagnosed as renal interstitial cell tumor (RICT) accompanied by elevated serum erythropoietin level and marked polycythemia. RICT is a rare tumor in dogs, originating from renal interstitial cells. While several renal tumors such as renal lymphoma, adenocarcinoma, carcinoma, sarcoma, fibrosarcoma and nephroblastoma may cause polycythemia, polycythemia caused by RICT has never been reported in dogs. The tumors in both dogs were solitary and lied within cortex or cortico-medullary junction. Histopathology revealed spindle-shaped cells suggesting mesenchymal origin, with no mitotic figures suggesting that the tumors in both dogs were benign. Following surgical removal of the affected kidney, serum erythropoietin level and polycythemia normalized in both dogs.

RESUMEN

A 12-year-old, 3.5-kg spayed female domestic shorthair cat had a tracheal mass identified as malignant B-cell lymphoma. The cat had tracheal resection and subsequently developed laryngeal paralysis. Due to multiple episodes of respiratory distress the cat subsequently had tracheal surgeries. Finally, the cat had a sudden onset of severe respiratory distress and collapsed. Computed tomography imaging and arterial blood gas analysis supported a diagnosis of acute lung injury.

RESUMEN

An intact, male mixed-breed cat approximately 3 months of age was referred to Iwate University Veterinary Teaching Hospital with dysuria that developed after a traffic accident. At the initial visit, a cystostomy tube was placed as a temporal urinary diversion. Antegrade urethrography revealed severe stenosis of the intrapelvic urethra. A prepubic urethrostomy (PPU) with formation of a convex urethral stoma was performed 22 days after the first visit. Twenty-four months after surgery, the cat could urinate smoothly in a standing position, although a small amount of intermittent leakage was observed immediately after getting up. There was no evidence of peristomal dermatitis. Therefore, the formation of a convex urethral stoma may effectively prevent peristomal dermatitis in cats who undergo PPU.

RESUMEN

A 3-year-old, 4.0 kg, intact male domestic shorthair cat presented with postoperative dysuria following urethral resection and anastomosis for urethral rupture. Retrograde urethrography revealed a stricture in the pelvic urethra. Urethroplasty with bladder mucosa was performed following a bilateral pubic-ischial osteotomy. The bladder wall was resected to harvest an appropriately sized bladder mucosa graft. The graft was placed over the urethral defect in patch fashion and stabilized with interrupted sutures. The cat was able to urinate normally with no evidence of lower urinary tract signs 2 year postoperatively. Therefore, urethroplasty with an onlay bladder mucosa graft may be a feasible alternative to prepubic or subpubic urethrostomy for the treatment of pelvic urethral stricture in cats.

RESUMEN

Urinary liver-type fatty acid-binding protein (uL-FABP) is a clinically useful biomarker for monitoring chronic kidney disease (CKD) in humans. However, long-term monitoring of uL-FABP in CKD cats has not been reported. The objective of this preliminary study was to investigate whether the urinary excretion of L-FABP could predict the deterioration of renal function in 2 CKD model cats. Urinary liver-type fatty acid-binding protein (uL-FABP) increased before standard renal biomarkers, including serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and symmetric dimethylarginine, in 1 cat with deteriorating renal function, but remained low and relatively stable in another cat with stable renal function. Our results suggest that uL-FABP is a potential clinical biomarker for predicting the progression of CKD in cats, as it is in humans.

We report a cervical intraspinal cyst in a dog that was initially tetraparetic but spontaneously recovered completely. MRI revealed a well-demarcated intraspinal cyst located dorsally to a degenerated intervertebral disc. The location of the cyst and its signal features on MRI resembled those of discal cysts previously reported in humans. It has been reported in dogs that clinical signs of a intraspinal cyst are similar to those of intervertebral disc herniation and both conditions require surgical intervention. Unexpectedly, our case showed rapid spontaneous recovery and the follow-up MRI revealed complete resolution of the intraspinal cyst and spinal cord compression. Spontaneous recovery of degenerative intraspinal cyst may occur in dogs, similar to rare human cases as reported previously.

RESUMEN

A 4-year-old neutered male Chihuahua was presented with a history of anorexia and vomiting. Continuous elevation of liver enzymes was found on repeated blood examinations and the dog was referred to us for further evaluation. The absence of gallbladder was suspected on ultrasonography. Exploratory laparotomy and retrograde cholangiography confirmed gallbladder agenesis and a possible hypoplasia of the right medial and lateral liver lobes. Histologically, proliferation of bile ductules associated with portal fibrosis and pseudolobular formation were apparent in the liver lobes.

RESUMEN

This study investigated oxidative stress biomarkers at 3 different oxygen concentrations in dogs under general anesthesia to determine whether high-concentration oxygen increases oxidative stress. Six healthy beagles were randomly assigned to receive 3 anesthesia protocols (inhalation of 40%, 60%, and 100% oxygen) during 3 hours of general anesthesia with sevoflurane, with at least one week in between each protocol. For each experiment, blood samples were collected at 0, 3, 6, and 24 hours after inhalation of oxygen. Derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites, biochemical antioxidant potential, superoxide dismutase, and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine in the blood did not significantly differ among the 3 groups at any time point. This study is the first comparing high concentrations of oxygen with low concentrations of oxygen for anesthesia in dogs. According to our findings, 100% oxygen may not alter the oxidative stress level in dogs during general anesthesia with sevoflurane for 3 hours.

BACKGROUND: Liver-type fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP) is a biomarker for early detection of renal disease in humans. Liver-type fatty acid-binding protein is cytotoxic oxidation products secreted from proximal tubules under ischemia and oxidative stress. OBJECTIVE: To examine renal expression and quantify urinary excretion of L-FABP in catswith renal disease. ANIMALS: One hundred and thirty-four client-owned cats including 34 cats with serum creatinine (sCre) values >1.6 mg/dL and 10 other cats that died in clinics. METHODS: Tissue expressions of L-FABP were examined by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting. Urinary L-FABP (uL-FABP) and serum L-FABP (sL-FABP) levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Anti-liver-type fatty acid-binding protein antibody immunostained renal sections. RESULTS: Feline kidneys express L-FABP. Strong L-FABP signals were observed in the lumens of proximal tubular cells in 5 cats with high uL-FABP excretion, but not in 5 cats with low uL-FABP excretion. In 9 normal cats, uL-FABP index was <1.2 µg/g urinary creatinine (uCre). High uL-FABP indexes (>10.0 µg/g uCre) were detected in 7 of 100 cats with low sCre (<1.6 mg/dL) and 18 of 44 cats with high sCre (>1.6 mg/dL). There was a weak correlation between L-FABP index and sCre, serum symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), or blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and these correlation coefficients were increased by analyzing only data of cats with sCre >1.6 mg/dL. There was a weak correlation between u L-FABP index and sL-FABP in all tested cats, but not in cats with high sCre. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: This study demonstrates correlations between L-FABP and current renal biomarkers for chronic kidney disease in cats, such as sCre and SDMA. Liver-type fatty acid-binding protein may be a potential biomarker to predict early pathophysiological events in feline kidneys.

RESUMEN

Phenobarbital (PB) decreases the cyclosporine (CsA) blood level in humans. However, the interaction of PB with CsA has not been reported in cats. This study investigated the effects of multiple doses of PB on the pharmacokinetics of CsA in three healthy cats. The treatments included oral CsA 5 mg/kg alone and oral CsA 5 mg/kg plus PB 5 mg/kg for 4 weeks. Co-administration of PB with CsA resulted in significant decreases in the oral bioavailability of CsA though both the first pass and elimination phases. These preliminary results suggest that oral administration of multiple doses of PB increases the required CsA dosage in CsA-based immunosuppressive therapy in cats.

RESUMEN

Liver-type fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP) is a biomarker for the early detection of renal diseases in humans. It is secreted along with cytotoxic oxidation products from proximal tubular epithelial cells under conditions of ischemia and/or oxidative stress. This study examined urinary L-FABP excretion under renal ischemia in feline acute kidney injury (AKI) model. L-FABP excretion increased immediately after renal ischemia/reperfusion, despite the absence of obvious structural damage to the kidneys, in the two AKI model cats studied. L-FABP was detected in the renal tubular lumen immediately after renal ischemia/reperfusion in the two cats, but not in a sham surgery cat. These results suggested that high L-FABP excretion is a pathophysiological response associated with antioxidant defense in proximal tubules with renal ischemia and/or oxidative stress in a feline model.

RESUMEN

Fluconazole (Fcz) is successfully used in human organ transplant patients as an antifungal therapy. However, Fcz can increase the cyclosporine (CsA) trough level and lead to CsA nephrotoxicity. In canine renal transplantation, CsA has been used as a major immunosuppressant, and it is important to control its trough level. However, the interaction of Fcz with CsA has not yet been reported in dogs. In this study, the effect of Fcz treatment on the pharmacokinetics of CsA in four healthy beagles was investigated using a four-period crossover design. The treatments included CsA alone (A), CsA + multiple-dose Fcz 50 mg (B), CsA + multiple-dose Fcz 25 mg (C) and CsA + single-dose Fcz 50 mg (D). Blood CsA concentrations were measured at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 24 hr after CsA administration. The AUC(0-12) and C(max) values for treatment B were significantly higher than those for the other treatments. In particular, the AUC(0-12) of treatment B was about two times higher than that of treatment A. Fcz administration did not significantly prolong the half-life or mean residence time of CsA. The results of our study show that administration of multiple therapeutic doses of Fcz can significantly increase the CsA blood concentration, which might partially depend upon the Fcz blood concentration. When Fcz is used in CsA-based canine renal transplantation, it may be necessary to adjust the CsA trough level by decreasing the dose.

RESUMEN

A 10 yr old intact female German shepherd dog presented with a large peripheral odontogenic fibroma and malignant melanoma on her lower jaw. The tumor was resected with a unilateral subtotal rostral hemimandibulectomy. After the mandible was removed, it was devitalized intraoperatively by freezing it in liquid nitrogen. It was subsequently reimplanted. New bone tissue formed in the gap between the frozen bone and the host bone. The regenerated bone contained osteocytes, osteoblasts, and blood vessels. The cosmetic appearance of the dog was preserved. The dog had normal mastication. The malignant melanoma recurred rostral of the left canine tooth at 159 days after the reconstruction surgery. A subtotal hemimandibulectomy was consequently performed. This is the first reported case of mandibular reconstruction using a liquid nitrogen-treated autograft in a dog with oral tumors.

RESUMEN

Proliferative and necrotising otitis externa (PNOE) is a very rare disease affecting the ear canals and concave pinnae of kittens. This report describes a 5-month-old cat with PNOE. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. Treatment was initiated with local injection of methylprednisolone acetate into the lesions. The cat was subsequently treated with clobetasol propionate cream, a potent topical glucocorticoid ointment. The cat showed marked improvement. While topical treatment with tacrolimus, an immunosuppressive agent, is reported to be an effective therapy, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to treat PNOE with local corticosteroid therapy.
