RESUMEN
Much attention is being devoted to the potential of marine sulfated polysaccharides as antiviral agents in preventing COVID-19. In this study, sulfated fucoidan and crude polysaccharides, extracted from six seaweed species (Undaria pinnatifida sporophyll, Laminaria japonica, Hizikia fusiforme, Sargassum horneri, Codium fragile, Porphyra tenera) and Haliotis discus hannai (abalone viscera), were screened for their inhibitory activity against SARS-CoV-2 virus entry. Most of them showed significant antiviral activities at an IC50 of 12~289 µg/mL against SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus in HEK293/ACE2, except for P. tenera (IC50 > 1000 µg/mL). The crude polysaccharide of S. horneri showed the strongest antiviral activity, with an IC50 of 12 µg/mL, to prevent COVID-19 entry, and abalone viscera and H. fusiforme could also inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection with an IC50 of 33 µg/mL and 47 µg/mL, respectively. The common properties of these crude polysaccharides, which have strong antiviral activity, are high molecular weight (>800 kDa), high total carbohydrate (62.7~99.1%), high fucose content (37.3~66.2%), and highly branched polysaccharides. These results indicated that the crude polysaccharides from seaweeds and abalone viscera can effectively inhibit SARS-CoV-2 entry.

[Purpose] We evaluated the effect of self-directed exercise using a task board on function and pain in the upper extremities of stroke patients [Subjects and Methods] We used the one group pre-post test design. Seven stroke patients who were selected based on the inclusion criteria participated in the program once a week for 10 weeks. The self-directed exercise comprised 5 stages that were divided according to the level of difficulty. The exercise was performed for 60 minutes using a special task board that we designed. The FMA (Fugl-Meyer Motor Assessment), VAS (Visual Analogue Scale), and speed of stacking were assessed to evaluate the amount of use of the affected arm at before and after intervention. [Results] The scores of the VAS and FMA, but not that of the speed of stacking cups, were improved. There was no significant correlation between the changes in VAS, FMA, and the speed of stacking cups. [Conclusion] The findings suggest that self-directed exercise with the task board could improve the levels of function and pain in the upper extremities. We suggest that self-directed exercise can be utilized as a clinical rehabilitation program and improve therapeutic effects.
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: A new distraction osteogenesis assembly system comprising a fully customized CAD/CAM-based fixation unit and ready-made distraction unit was developed. The aim of this study was to introduce our new distraction system and to evaluate its accuracy level in a sampled mandibular distraction osteogenesis. METHODS: Our system consists of a fully customized CAD/CAM-based fixation plate unit with two plates for each moving and anchoring part, and a ready-made distraction unit with attachment slots for fixation plates. The experimental distractions were performed on 3D-printed mandibles for one control and two experimental groups (N = 10 for each group). All groups had reference bars on the chin region and teeth to measure distraction accuracy. The control group had the classical ready-made distraction system, and experimental groups 1 and 2 were fitted with our new distraction assembly using a different distractor-positioning guide design. All distracted experimental mandibles were scanned by CT imaging, then superimposed on a 3D simulation to get their discrepancy levels. RESULTS: The measured 3D distances between the reference landmarks of the surgical simulations and the experimental surgeries for the three groups were significantly different (p < 0.0001) by statistical analysis. The errors were greater in the control group (with a total average of 19.18 ± 3.73 mm in 3D distance between the simulated and actual reference points) than those in the two experimental groups (with an average of 3.68 ± 1.41 mm for group 1 and 3.07 ± 1.39 mm for group 2). The customized distraction assembly with 3D-printed bone plate units in group 1 and 2, however, did not show any significant differences between simulated and actual distances (p > 0.999). CONCLUSION: Our newly-developed distraction assembly system with CAD/CAM plate for the distraction osteogenesis of the mandible produced a greater level of accuracy than that of a conventional distraction device. The system appears to address existing shortcomings of conventional distraction devices, including inaccuracy in vector-controlled movement of the system. However, it also needs to be further developed to address the requirements and anatomical characteristics of specific regions.
