RESUMEN

Efficient support materials are crucial for maximizing the efficacy of nanomaterials in various applications such as energy storage, drug delivery, catalysis, and environmental remediation. However, traditional supports often hinder nanomaterial performance due to their high weight ratio and limited manageability, leading to issues like tube blocking and secondary pollution. To address this, a novel grapefruit-inspired polymeric capsule (GPC) as a promising carrier platform is introduced. The millimeter-scale GPC features a hydrophilic shell and an internal hierarchical microstructure with 80% void volume, providing ample space for encapsulating diverse nanomaterials including metals, polymers, metal-organic frameworks, and silica. Through liquid-phase bottom-up methods, it is successfully loaded Fe2O3, SiO2, polyacrylic acid, and Prussian blue nanomaterials onto the GPC, achieving high mass ratio (1776, 488, 898, and 634 wt.%, respectively). The GPC shell prevents nanomaterial leakage and the influx of suspended solids, while its internal framework enhances structural stability and mass transfer rates. With long-term storage stability, high carrying capacity, and versatile applicability, the GPC significantly enhances the field applicability of nanomaterials.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is linked to various health complications, including erectile dysfunction (ED), which is more prevalent in individuals with OSA. This study explored ED in Korean OSA patients and assessed the impact of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy on ED. METHODS: A total of 87 male patients with OSA from four different sleep centers underwent physical measurements and completed sleep and mental health (MH) questionnaires, including the Korean version of the International index of erectile function (IIEF), before and three months after initiating CPAP therapy. RESULTS: After three months of CPAP therapy, the patients demonstrated a significant improvement in ED as measured on the IIEF. However, the study found no significant correlation between the duration of CPAP use and the improvement in IIEF score. It did identify the SF36 quality of life assessment as a significant factor influencing ED improvement after CPAP. CONCLUSIONS: ED is a prevalent issue that escalates with age and is associated with OSA. CPAP therapy has shown potential in alleviating ED symptoms, particularly in those with underlying psychological conditions, although further research is required to confirm these findings and understand the underlying mechanisms.

We aimed to identify structural and functional changes in healthy adults with catch-up sleep (CUS), we applied seed-based functional connectivity (FC) analysis using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We hypothesized that deficits in reward processing could be a fundamental mechanism underlying the motivation of taking CUS. Then, 55 healthy adults voluntarily (34 with CUS and 21 without CUS) participated in this study. Voxel-based morphometry was performed to explore region of gray matter volume (GMV) difference between CUS and non-CUS groups. Between-group comparison of FC was then carried out using resting-state functional MRI analysis seeding at the region of volume difference. Moreover, the region of volume difference and the strength of FC were correlated with scores of questionnaires for reward-seeking behavior and clinical variables. CUS group had a higher reward-seeking tendency, and increased GMV in the bilateral nucleus accumbens and right superior frontal gyrus relative to non-CUS group. FC analysis seeding at the bilateral accumbens revealed increases of FC in the bilateral medial prefrontal cortex in CUS group compared to non-CUS group. The questionnaire scores reflecting the reward-seeking tendency were correlated with the FC strength between bilateral accumbens and medial prefrontal cortex. Our results indicate that CUS is associated with reward-seeking tendency and increased GMV and FC in regions responsible for reward network. Our findings suggest that enhanced reward network could be the crucial mechanism underlying taking CUS and might be implicated in the detrimental effects of circadian misalignment.

The combination of brain structural and functional connectivity offers complementary insights into its organisation. Multilayer network analysis explores various relationships across different layers within a single system. We aimed to investigate changes in the structural and functional multilayer network in 69 patients with primary restless legs syndrome (RLS) compared with 50 healthy controls. Participants underwent diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and resting state-functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) using a three-tesla MRI scanner. We constructed a structural connectivity matrix derived from DTI using a DSI program and made a functional connectivity matrix based on rs-fMRI using an SPM program and CONN toolbox. A multilayer network analysis, using BRAPH program, was then conducted to assess the connectivity patterns in both groups. At the global level, significant differences there were between the patients with RLS and healthy controls. The average multiplex participation was lower in patients with RLS than in healthy controls (0.804 vs. 0.821, p = 0.042). Additionally, several regions showed significant differences in the nodal level in multiplex participation between patients with RLS and healthy controls, particularly the frontal and temporal lobes. The regions affected included the inferior frontal gyrus, medial orbital gyrus, precentral gyrus, rectus gyrus, insula, superior and inferior temporal gyrus, medial and lateral occipitotemporal gyrus, and temporal pole. These results represent evidence of diversity in interactions between structural and functional connectivity in patients with RLS, providing a more comprehensive understanding of the brain network in RLS. This may contribute to a precise diagnosis of RLS, and aid the development of a biomarker to track treatment effectiveness.

PURPOSE: To delineate the association between otolith function and changes in mean orthostatic blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) in patients with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). METHODS: Forty-nine patients with POTS were prospectively recruited. We analyzed the results of ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs) and cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs), as well as head-up tilt table tests using a Finometer. The oVEMP and cVEMP responses were obtained using tapping stimuli and 110 dB tone-burst sounds, respectively. We measured maximal changes in 5-s averaged systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), and heart rate (HR) within 15 s and during 10 min after tilting. We compared the results with those of 20 age- and sex-matched healthy participants. RESULTS: The n1-p1 amplitude of oVEMPs was larger in patients with POTS than in healthy participants (p = 0.001), whereas the n1 latency (p = 0.280) and interaural difference (p = 0.199) did not differ between the two. The n1-p1 amplitude was a positive predictor for POTS (odds ratio 1.07, 95% confidence interval 1.01-1.13, p = 0.025). Body weight (p = 0.007) and n1-p1 amplitude of oVEMP (p = 0.019) were positive predictors for ΔSBP15s in POTS, whereas aging was a negative predictor (p = 0.005). These findings were not observed in healthy participants. CONCLUSIONS: Augmented utricular inputs may be associated with a relative predominance of sympathetic over vagal control of BP and HR, especially for an early response during orthostasis in patients with POTS. Overt sympathoexcitation due to exaggerated utricular input and lack of readaptation may be associated with the pathomechanism of POTS.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to heightened mood disturbances linked to increased electronic device use at bedtime (EUB). General anxiety may contribute to an increased likelihood of experiencing nocebo responses, which have been reported to be associated with COVID-19 vaccine-related adverse events (CAEs). However, no related studies have been conducted to examine this association to date. METHODS: We executed a nationwide cross-sectional study to explore these correlations during the pandemic. Using data from the 2022 National Sleep Survey of South Korea, we analyzed the sleep health of 4,000 adults aged 20-69 years between January and February 2022. Shift workers and those with severe sleep disorders were excluded. Participants with EUB more than four days a week were labeled as high frequency EUB, and those reporting CAEs after both vaccine doses were marked as having a presence of CAEs. The survey also included details about anthropometric data, socioeconomic status, and sleep status. RESULTS: Of the 3,702 participants, 92.6% had received two or more vaccine doses, with 41.2% experiencing CAEs. Furthermore, 73.7% had a high EUB frequency. Factors associated with CAE reporting included younger age, female sex, and high EUB frequency, while heavy alcohol use was found to be less likely to be associated with CAE reporting. Notably, a high EUB frequency was significantly associated with reported CAEs (odds ratio, 1.223; 95% confidence interval, 1.028-1.455; P = 0.023). CONCLUSION: A nationwide online survey conducted in South Korea during the pandemic found that individuals who engaged in the relatively frequent use of electronic devices during bedtime had worse sleep quality and increased COVID-19-related adverse events compared with those using these devices less frequently. These findings have the potential to enhance our understanding of the impact of the use of electronic devices at bedtime on health.

Naïve and primed pluripotent stem cells recapitulate the peri- and post-implantation development, respectively. Thus, investigation of distinct traits between each pluripotent stem cell type would shed light on early embryonic processes. Herein, by screening a fluorescent probe library, we found that intracellular glycogen led to specific reactivity to CDg4, a glycogen fluorescence sensor, in both human and mouse naïve embryonic stem cells (ESCs). The requirement of constant inhibition of Gsk3ß as well as high oxidative phosphorylation (OxPHOS) in naïve compared to primed ESCs was closely associated to high level of intracellular glycogen in naïve ESCs. Both capacity of OxPHOS and stored glycogen, rescued naïve ESCs by transient inhibition of glycolysis, which selectively eliminated primed ESCs. Additionally, naïve ESCs with active OxPHOS were enriched from a mixture with primed ESCs by high reactivity to ATP-Red1, a mitochondrial ATP fluorescence probe. These results indicate the active OxPHOS and high intracellular glycogen as a novel "biomarker" delineating metabolic remodeling during the transition of naïve pluripotency.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the effect of electronic stimulation (ES) as a non-pharmacological treatment in restless legs syndrome (RLS). METHODS: This is a randomized, single-blind study. A total of 46 patients were included, consisting of an active group and a sham group with 22 and 24 members, respectively. The stimulation was administered to bilateral lower legs using the tapping mode (3 Hz) on a handheld ES device, and symptom changes were measured in both groups. The effects of the stimuli were analyzed with repeated measures ANOVA. RESULTS: The symptom severity was significantly reduced in the active group, and showed significant interaction effects in the time * group (F = 4.441, p = 0.031). Although both the active and sham groups reported improved symptoms upon receiving longer periods of treatment, the effect of the ES was greater in the active group. CONCLUSIONS: ES treatment resulted in symptom improvement when using ideal levels of stimulation intensity. ES can be considered as a non-pharmacological treatment option for RLS.

PURPOSE: We investigated sex differences in the effect of seizures on social anxiety in persons with epilepsy. METHOD: In this cross-sectional multicenter study, social anxiety was measured using the short forms of the Social Phobia Scale (SPS-6) and Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS-6). SPS-6 scores ≥ 9 and SIAS-6 scores ≥ 12 were considered to indicate social phobia and social interaction anxiety, respectively. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Stigma Scale-Revised, and Family Adaptation-Partnership-Growth-Affection-Resolve scale were also completed. A logistic regression analysis with an interaction term was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Out of 285 participants, a SPS-6 score ≥ 9 and a SIAS-6 score ≥ 12 were noted in 62 (21.8%) and 36 (12.6%) of participants, respectively. There was no difference in the prevalence of social anxiety between men and women. Intractable seizures and lack of seizure freedom were associated with a SPS-6 score ≥ 9 and a SIAS-6 score ≥ 12, but statistical significance was lost in the adjusted models. However, intractable seizures and lack of seizure freedom significantly interacted with sex for a SPS-6 score ≥ 9 (p = 0.018) and a SIAS-6 score ≥ 12 (p = 0.048) in both the separate and adjusted models. Specifically, intractable seizures tended to be positively associated with SPS-6 scores ≥ 9 than non-intractable seizures in men only (odds ratio = 2.602, p = 0.068), whereas lack of seizure freedom tended to be negatively associated with SIAS-6 scores ≥ 12 than seizure freedom in women only (odds ratio = 4.804, p = 0.053). CONCLUSION: We found significant sex differences in seizure effects on social anxiety. Intractable seizures were associated with social phobia in men, whereas lack of seizure freedom in the last year was associated with social interaction anxiety in women.

Motor imagery (MI) brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have been used for a wide variety of applications due to their intuitive matching between the user's intentions and the performance of tasks. Applying dry electroencephalography (EEG) electrodes to MI BCI applications can resolve many constraints and achieve practicality. In this study, we propose a multi-domain convolutional neural networks (MD-CNN) model that learns subject-specific and electrode-dependent EEG features using a multi-domain structure to improve the classification accuracy of dry electrode MI BCIs. The proposed MD-CNN model is composed of learning layers for three domain representations (time, spatial, and phase). We first evaluated the proposed MD-CNN model using a public dataset to confirm 78.96% classification accuracy for multi-class classification (chance level accuracy: 30%). After that, 10 healthy subjects participated and performed three classes of MI tasks related to lower-limb movement (gait, sitting down, and resting) over two sessions (dry and wet electrodes). Consequently, the proposed MD-CNN model achieved the highest classification accuracy (dry: 58.44%; wet: 58.66%; chance level accuracy: 43.33%) with a three-class classifier and the lowest difference in accuracy between the two electrode types (0.22%, d = 0.0292) compared with the conventional classifiers (FBCSP, EEGNet, ShallowConvNet, and DeepConvNet) that used only a single domain. We expect that the proposed MD-CNN model could be applied for developing robust MI BCI systems with dry electrodes.

OBJECTIVE: There is no scale for rating the severity of autoimmune encephalitis (AE). In this study, we aimed to develop a novel scale for rating severity in patients with diverse AE syndromes and to verify the reliability and validity of the developed scale. METHODS: The key items were generated by a panel of experts and selected according to content validity ratios. The developed scale was initially applied to 50 patients with AE (development cohort) to evaluate its acceptability, reproducibility, internal consistency, and construct validity. Then, the scale was applied to another independent cohort (validation cohort, n = 38). RESULTS: A new scale consisting of 9 items (seizure, memory dysfunction, psychiatric symptoms, consciousness, language problems, dyskinesia/dystonia, gait instability and ataxia, brainstem dysfunction, and weakness) was developed. Each item was assigned a value of up to 3 points. The total score could therefore range from 0 to 27. We named the scale the Clinical Assessment Scale in Autoimmune Encephalitis (CASE). The new scale showed excellent interobserver (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.97) and intraobserver (ICC = 0.96) reliability for total scores, was highly correlated with modified Rankin scale (r = 0.86, p < 0.001), and had acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.88). Additionally, in the validation cohort, the scale showed high interobserver reliability (ICC = 0.99) and internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.92). INTERPRETATION: CASE is a novel clinical scale for AE with a high level of clinimetric properties. It would be suitable for application in clinical practice and might help overcome the limitations of current outcome scales for AE. ANN NEUROL 2019;85:352-358.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to gather the expert opinions of Korean epileptologists regarding the treatment of adult patients with epilepsy. METHODS: A total of 42 neurologists who specialized in epilepsy were surveyed. They completed an online questionnaire describing multiple patient scenarios. Using these scenarios, they evaluated treatment strategies and gave their preference for specific antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) used to treat genetically mediated generalized epilepsy and focal epilepsy. RESULTS: Initial AED monotherapy, followed by a second form of alternative monotherapy or an add-on combination therapy, was the preferred treatment strategy. The experts reached consensus for 87.2% of the items. The most commonly selected AEDs for the initial monotherapy for patients with generalized epilepsy were levetiracetam or valproate. For those with focal epilepsy, levetiracetam, oxcarbazepine, or lamotrigine were the most popular selections. Ethosuximide was the treatment of choice only for patients with generalized epilepsy with prominent absence seizures. Levetiracetam was preferred as an add-on therapy for both generalized and focal epilepsy. For special populations of patients, such as elderly adults or those with comorbid diseases, levetiracetam or lamotrigine was selected as the treatment of choice. CONCLUSION: Most of the survey results were in accordance with the US expert opinion survey published in 2016. This survey can assist clinicians in making clinical decisions when treating individual adult patients with epilepsy.

PURPOSE: Literature regarding family stigma related to epilepsy is scarce. This study investigated the prevalence of family stigma and depressive symptoms and the associated factors among the family members of patients with epilepsy. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, Stigma Scale-Revised score ≥ 4 and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score ≥ 10 were considered indicative of moderate-to-severe stigma and depressive symptoms, respectively. Stepwise logistic regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: Of the 482 family members, a mean age was 47.1 ±â€¯9.4 years, and 73.4% were female. Of the patients, a mean age was 25.5 ±â€¯16.7 years, and 45.0% were female. Idiopathic generalized epilepsy and focal epilepsy were noted in 22.4% and 65.6% of patients, respectively. Family stigma and depressive symptoms were noted in 10.0% and 11.2% of family members, respectively. Family stigma was significantly associated with high seizure frequency and being a sibling or offspring of a patient independent of their depressive symptoms. By contrast, depressive symptoms in family members were significantly associated with polytherapy, being parents of a patient, and neurological comorbidities independent of family stigma. In a subset of patients and their family, patients had higher proportion of stigma and depressive symptoms than their family. Depressive symptoms and stigma among patients were significantly correlated with those among parents, but not spouse. CONCLUSION: Family stigma is common in families with epilepsy and is closely related to depressive symptoms. Frequent seizures, polytherapy, neurological comorbidities, and the relationship to a patient may be factors that are independently associated with family stigma and depressive symptoms in family members.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in stigma, disclosure management of epilepsy, and knowledge about epilepsy between patients with epilepsy who recognized and did not recognize the new Korean term for epilepsy. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, multicenter study. The Stigma Scale-Revised, the Disclosure Management Scale, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and a questionnaire assessing knowledge about epilepsy were used. The set of questionnaires had two versions, using either the old or new name for epilepsy. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used. RESULTS: A total of 341 patients with epilepsy and 509 family members were recruited. Approximately 62% of patients felt some degree of epilepsy-related stigma. Mild stigma, severe concealment of epilepsy diagnosis, and increased knowledge about epilepsy were independently identified as factors associated with recognition of the new term in patients. Recognition of the new term was more prevalent in patients and family members with higher education, female family members, and family members having patients with younger age at seizure onset and shorter duration of epilepsy. There were no significant differences between the two types of questionnaires. About 81% of patients and 93% of family members had a positive attitude about renaming epilepsy. CONCLUSION: The use of the new Korean term for epilepsy (cerebroelectric disorder) increased knowledge about epilepsy but did not reduce stigma and concealment of epilepsy diagnosis in Korean adults with epilepsy. Higher education may be an important factor for knowing the new term in patients and family members.

PURPOSE: The change in sleep patterns across the duration of pregnancy is an item of interest. The aim of this study is to provide data on pregnant women's quality of sleep (QoS) and quality of life (QoL) to determine appropriate times to screen for potential problems. METHODS: This is a multicenter, prospective, longitudinal observational study. Primigravidae, with no previous illness, completed questionnaires once a month. Strict exclusion criteria were applied in order to evaluate QoS and QoL in "normal" pregnant women. RESULTS: A total of 83 normal primigravidae completed this study. The mean age was 33.1 ± 4.0. During pregnancy, body mass index gradually increased, and QoS worsened to a significant degree between the fifth and ninth months (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index 6.8 ± 2.8 vs. 8.9 ± 3.6, p < 0.001). There was a statistically significant difference in QoL between the fifth and seventh months (Short Form-36 70.8 ± 18.3 vs. 67.3 ± 15.1, p = 0.009). There was no evidence of significant depression or suspicion of sleep-disordered breathing. CONCLUSIONS: Pregnant women in South Korea have gradual worsening of QoS which becomes clinically significant by full term. QoL changes significantly between the fifth and seventh months. The results of this observational study suggest that it would be fruitful to evaluate QoS and QoL in pregnant women between the second and third trimesters.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy in women with epilepsy (WWE) is known to have a higher risk for fetal development complications, which may include congenital malformations. Unfortunately, information pertaining to pregnancy in WWE is difficult to obtain because there are considerable ethical issues preventing these studies from being conducted on pregnant women. Therefore, this study investigated the pregnancies of Korean WWE in a tertiary epilepsy center to observe data resulting from the outcome of the pregnancies. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 48 pregnant WWE who were treated at the regional tertiary epilepsy center. All records of hospital visits before and after the period of pregnancy were analyzed to obtain information about the seizures as well as pregnancy-related outcomes, including the status of the newborns' conditions. RESULTS: The subject group consisted of 31 (63.3%) with partial epilepsy, 6 (12.5%) with generalized epilepsy, and 11 (22.9%) with unclassified epilepsy. There were 27 subjects who took one antiepileptic drug (AED), and 12 who took two AEDs. The most commonly used drug was lamotrigine (29.8%). Of the 48 WWE involved in the study, 31 underwent caesarian sections and 17 opted for natural birth. Thirty-nine (81.3%) delivered at full-term, but 9 (18.7%) delivered at preterm. Compared to full-term infants, pre-mature infants showed lower birth weight, smaller head circumference, shorter height, and lower 1-minute Apgar scores, but seizure frequencies of the mothers did not differ. CONCLUSION: In WWE, epilepsy classification, number of AEDs taken, and frequency of seizures are not significantly correlated with delivery and fetal condition. This data could be used as a clinical reference for physicians to provide useful information to WWE if they are concerned about their pregnancies.

This study aimed to develop an intuitive gait-related motor imagery (MI)-based hybrid brain-computer interface (BCI) controller for a lower-limb exoskeleton and investigate the feasibility of the controller under a practical scenario including stand-up, gait-forward, and sit-down. A filter bank common spatial pattern (FBCSP) and mutual information-based best individual feature (MIBIF) selection were used in the study to decode MI electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and extract a feature matrix as an input to the support vector machine (SVM) classifier. A successive eye-blink switch was sequentially combined with the EEG decoder in operating the lower-limb exoskeleton. Ten subjects demonstrated more than 80% accuracy in both offline (training) and online. All subjects successfully completed a gait task by wearing the lower-limb exoskeleton through the developed real-time BCI controller. The BCI controller achieved a time ratio of 1.45 compared with a manual smartwatch controller. The developed system can potentially be benefit people with neurological disorders who may have difficulties operating manual control.

BACKGROUND: Although previous research provides insight into the role of neuroinflammation in idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder, the association of this disorder with peripheral blood inflammatory markers remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate inflammatory cytokines in plasma samples in patients with idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder and to explore whether these markers are associated with prodromal symptoms of α-synucleinopathies. METHODS: We collected plasma from patients with polysomnographically confirmed idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder without parkinsonism or dementia (n = 54) and from healthy controls (n = 56). The following cytokines were measured: interleukin-1ß, interleukin-2, interleukin-6, interleukin-10, and tumor necrosis factor-α. The idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder patients underwent sleep, motor, cognitive, olfactory, and autonomic testing. RESULTS: The anti-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin-10, levels in the idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder group were significantly upregulated compared to the control group (P = 0.022), but this difference did not withstand Bonferroni correction. The other proinflammatory cytokine levels did not differ between the groups. No correlation was found between the cytokine levels and any clinical variable. CONCLUSIONS: Our data do not provide evidence supporting the role of peripheral inflammation in idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder. However, considering the limited statistical power because of the small sample size, further large-scale longitudinal studies with a broader spectrum of cytokines are needed to clarify this issue. © 2019 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine social anxiety in South Korean adults with epilepsy and to identify associated factors. METHOD: This was a cross-sectional, multicenter study in South Korea. Social anxiety was assessed using short forms of the Social Phobia Scale (SPS-6) and Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS-6). The SPS-6 scores ≥9 and SIAS-6 scores ≥12 were considered indicative of social phobia and social interaction anxiety, respectively. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9); Stigma Scale-Revised (SS-R); Disclosure Management Scale; Family Adaptation, Partnership, Growth, Affection, Resolve (F-APGAR) scale; and a questionnaire assessing knowledge about epilepsy were also used. RESULTS: Of a total of 219 patients with epilepsy, 21% and 11% had SPS-6 scores ≥9 and SIAS-6 scores ≥12, respectively. In logistic regression analysis, SPS-6 scores ≥9 were independently associated with SS-R scores of 4-9 (odds ratio [OR]: 8.626, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.515-29.587, p = .001), SS-R scores 1-3 (OR: 5.496, 95% CI: 1.757-17.197, p = .003), and PHQ-9 scores ≥10 (OR: 4.092, 95% CI: 1.823-9.185, p = .001). In contrast, SIAS-6 scores ≥12 were related only to PHQ-9 scores ≥10 (OR: 8.740, 95% CI: 3.237-23.599, p < .001). Belonging to a dysfunctional family and lack of knowledge about epilepsy tended to be associated with social phobia (p = .071) and social interaction anxiety (p = .090), respectively. Epilepsy-related variables were not related to social anxiety. CONCLUSION: Social anxiety is not rare in patients with epilepsy. In this study, social phobia was associated with perceived stigma and depressive symptoms, whereas social interaction anxiety was related only to depressive symptoms in patients with epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Inpatient long-term video-electroencephalographic (VEEG) monitoring has been used extensively for differential diagnosis of paroxysmal events. We evaluated the diagnostic yield and clinical utility of VEEG performed in a comprehensive epilepsy center. METHOD: We retrospectively reviewed all cases of VEEG performed from May 2003 to April 2018. We analyzed the data to determine its clinical utility and diagnostic yield. RESULTS: A total of 1335 cases were reviewed. After excluding 147 cases of intracranial recording and 163 cases with incomplete medical records, 1025 cases of VEEG were included. The mean duration of VEEG was 2.3 ± 1.6 days (range = 1-14). A total of 763 VEEGs documented epileptic seizures or interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) to confirm the diagnosis of epilepsy. There were 99 psychogenic non-epileptic seizure, 36 status epilepticus, and 34 VEEGs which revealed generalized or focal slow activities without any clinical seizures or IEDs. VEEG was normal in 170 cases. The diagnostic yield of VEEG varied from 83.4 to 88.4% depending on its definition. The proportion of epilepsy in total cases of VEEG continued to decrease from 77.2 to 61.4%. In contrast, the proportion of normal VEEG steadily increased from 4.1 to 24.1% during the same time period. CONCLUSIONS: This study ascertained how useful VEEG is and the utility of VEEG has been diversifying in clinical circumstances beyond epilepsy. VEEG can play a pivotal role in the diagnostic approach to epilepsy and its differential diagnoses.
