RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study aimed at evaluating the outcomes of ulnar shortening osteotomy (USO) for the treatment of ulnar styloid impaction syndrome (USIS) and to compare them with those of USO for the treatment of ulnar impaction syndrome (UIS). METHODS: We enrolled 144 patients who underwent USO between March 2015 and October 2021. The patients were divided into a UIS group (group I, n = 93) and a USIS group (group II, n = 51). Clinical and radiological parameters, including Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) score, ulnar variance, ulnar styloid length, and ulnar styloid process index (USPI), were collected pre-operatively and one year post-operatively, and a comparative analysis was performed. RESULTS: The DASH score showed significant improvement in both groups (p < .001 and p < .001), and there was no significant difference between the two groups one year after surgery (p = .143). The USPI was significantly different between the two groups (p < .001). The ulno-lunate and ulno-triquetrum distances showed significant increases in both groups, with significant differences between the two groups (p = .020, and p < .001, respectively). The incidence of post-operative arthritic changes in the distal radioulnar joint was significantly greater in the UIS group than that in the USIS group (21 vs 3, respectively; p = .017). No remarkable differences were observed in the post-operative evidence of chondromalacia at the last follow-up between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The USO, which was performed as a treatment for USIS showed reliable outcomes compared to the USO for the treatment of UIS. Therefore, USO is a viable option for the treatment of USIS.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Studies are conflicting regarding the relationship between ulnar styloid fracture (USF) location and distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability in patients with distal radius fracture (DRF) and concomitant USF. The objective of this study was to determine the association of USF location with TFCC foveal tear and factors associated with DRUJ instability in patients with both DRF and USF. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-four patients with both DRF and USF who had wrist MRI examination before surgery were analyzed. USF location (tip or base) and TFCC foveal insertion status (intact, partial tear, or complete tear or avulsion with fractured fragment) were evaluated. DRUJ stability was assessed intra-operatively after fixation of the radius. Factors potentially associated with DRUJ instability, such as age, gender, USF location, USF fragment gap, radioulnar distance, radial shortening, and TFCC foveal tear, were analyzed. RESULTS: Among 54 patients, 37 (69%) and 17 (31%) had USF at the base and the tip, respectively. In patients with base fractures, TFCC foveal insertion was found to be disrupted in 89% (33/37) patients (complete tear in 11 and partial tear in 22) but intact in 11% (4/37). On the contrary, in patients with tip fractures, the insertion was found to be disrupted in 88% (15/17) patients (complete tear in 2 and partial tear in 13) but intact in 12% (2/17). After fixation of the radius, total 52% (28/54) patients showed DRUJ instability. Especially, DRUJ instability was found in 57% (21/37) of ulna styloid process base fracture patients and 41% (7/17) of ulna styloid process tip fracture patients. In univariate analysis, complete tear of TFCC foveal insertion and wider USF fragment distance were associated with DRUJ instability. CONCLUSIONS: Tears of TFCC foveal insertion are common in patients with DRF and concomitant ulnar styloid base fractures. Based on the findings of this study, tear of TFCC foveal insertion seems to be also common in patients with DRF and concomitant ulnar styloid tip fractures. And also, DRUJ instability seems to be associated with a TFCC foveal tear independent of USF location.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a triangular-shaped corticotomy on the protraction of second and third molars in patients with missing mandibular first molars. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The corticotomy and non-corticotomy groups consisted of sixteen first molars in fifteen patients (28.6 ± 9.4 years) and nineteen first molars in fifteen patients (26.6 ± 8.4 years), respectively. A triangular-shaped corticotomy was performed between the second premolar and molar. Temporary skeletal anchorage devices (TSADs) were placed between the first and second premolars in both groups. Mandibular dentition variables were measured on the pre and post-treatment panoramic radiographs and lateral cephalograms. Analysis of covariance was performed. RESULTS: The corticotomy group exhibited 2.8 mm more inter-radicular correction between the second molar to second premolar roots (P < .001) and 1.6 mm more inter-radicular distance correction between the third molar to second premolar roots compared to the non-corticotomy group (P < .01). The corticotomy group required 5.5 months less treatment time for space closure (P < .05), but the total treatment time was the same for both groups. CONCLUSIONS: The inter-radicular distance between the mandibular second premolar and molar and treatment times for space closure was significantly reduced in the corticotomy group.

RESUMEN

The loss or dysfunction of human corneal endothelial cells (hCEnCs) is a leading cause of blindness due to corneal failure. Corneal transplantation with a healthy donor cornea has been the only available treatment for corneal endothelial disease. However, the need for way to regenerate the CEnCs has been increased due to the global shortage of donor corneas. The aim of the study is to investigate whether novel Rho-kinase (ROCK) inhibitors can induce the cultivation and regeneration of hCEnCs. Cultured hCEnCs were treated with Y-27632, sovesudil, or PHP-0961 for 24 h. Cellular responses, including cell viability, cytotoxicity, proliferation, and Ki67 expression with ROCK inhibitors were evaluated. We also evaluated wound healing and cell adhesion assays. Porcine corneas were used ex vivo to evaluate the effects of Y-27632, sovesudil, and PHP-0961 on wound healing and regeneration. We performed live/dead cell assays and immunofluorescence staining for SRY (sex determining region Y)-box 2 (SOX2), ß-catenin, and ZO-1 on porcine corneas after ROCK inhibitor treatments. Cell viability, cell proliferation rate, and the number of Ki67-positive cells were higher in Y-27632, sovesudil and PHP-0961 treated cells compared to the control. There was no difference in LDH cytotoxicity test between any groups. Cells treated with Y-27632, sovesudil and PHP-0961 showed faster migration, wound healing, and cell adhesion. In the porcine ex vivo experiments, wound healing, the number of live cells, and SOX2-positive cells were higher in Y-27632, sovesudil and PHP-0961 treated corneas. In all experiments, sovesudil and PHP-0961, the novel ROCK inhibitors, were equal or superior to the results of the ROCK inhibitor positive control, Y-27632. In conclusion, sovesudil and PHP-0961, novel ROCK inhibitors have the capacity to regenerate hCEnCs by enhancing cell proliferation and adhesion between cells.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the causes of retro-tubercular gap widening and to confirm whether this widened gap causes instability of the osteotomy configuration during open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO). METHODS: Operative records and radiologic findings of patients who underwent biplanar medial OWHTO between 2014 and 2016 were retrospectively evaluated. To identify the osteotomy configuration including lateral hinge fracture, postoperative simple radiographs and CT images were analyzed. Postoperative CT scan was used to evaluate the widening of the retro-tubercular gap, thickness, and axial angle of retro-tubercular osteotomy, as well as the ratios of anterior and posterior osteotomy, and hinge length. The correlation of each factor was evaluated and analyzed in accordance with the lateral hinge fracture (LHF). RESULTS: Widening of the retro-tubercular gap showed a significant correlation with the axial angle of retro-tubercular osteotomy, anterior osteotomy ratio, and opening gap distance, but not with the thickness of retro-tubercular osteotomy, posterior osteotomy ratio, and hinge length ratio. The LHF group showed significantly larger value than the non-LHF group with respect to the thickness of retro-tubercular osteotomy (P = 0.003), axial angle of retro-tubercular osteotomy (P = 0.033), retro-planar gap distance (P = 0.001), anterior osteotomy ratio (P = 0.000), and opening gap distance (P = 0.003). The hinge length ratio was smaller in the LHF group than in the non-LHF group (P = 0.001). However, the posterior osteotomy ratio was not different between the two groups (n.s.). CONCLUSION: Retro-tubercular gap widening can be caused by inappropriate anterior osteotomy and large opening gap distance, which can be related to LHF. Therefore, anterior cortical osteotomy may also be an important factor for preventing instability of the proximal fragment in biplanar OWHTO. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Case-control study, Level III.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of depression and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are increasing in the elderly and are reportedly related to each other. We evaluated the relationship between T2DM-related factors and the degree of depression in elderly patients with T2DM based on gender. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 155 patients with T2DM (56 males and 99 females aged ≥ 65 years) from seven hospitals were included in the study. To assess the status of depressive symptoms, the short form of the Geriatric Depression Scale-Korean version (SGDS-K) was used. We evaluated DM-related factors, such as T2DM duration, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels, and T2DM complications, as well as other possible factors that could affect depression, such as cognitive function, physical function, education level, and other personal factors. RESULTS: Mean age of the participants was 71.3 years with a mean HbA1c level of 7.6%. Males in the good glycemic control group (HbA1c <7%) showed lower SGDS-K scores compared to those in the poor glycemic control group, and the mean SGDS-K score was higher in the group with a longer duration of DM (M10 years); however, no difference was observed in females. Males and females with microvascular and macrovascular complications tended to have higher SGDS-K scores than participants with no microvascular or macrovascular complications. A multiple linear regression analysis revealed that DM duration and HbA1c level were independently associated with SGDS-K scores in males. CONCLUSION: Greater depression was associated with poorer glycemic control and a longer duration of DM in elderly males with T2DM.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Pedicled abdominal flaps are a widely used surgical technique for forearm reconstruction in patients with soft tissue defects. However, some drawbacks include restricted flap size, partial flap loss, and donor-site morbidity. To address these concerns, we present a case of a pedicled abdominal flap using the deep inferior epigastric artery perforators (DIEP) for forearm reconstruction in a patient with a large soft tissue defect. CASE SUMMARY: A 46-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital with forearm injury caused by a pressing machine. A 15 cm × 10 cm soft tissue defect with complete rupture of the ulnar side structures of the forearm was found. One week after orthopedic management of the neurovascular injury and fractures using the first stage of Masquelet technique, the patient was referred to the plastic and reconstructive surgery department for wound coverage. Surgical debridement and negative-pressure wound therapy revealed a 20 cm × 15 cm soft tissue defect. A pedicle abdominal flap with the DIEP was used to cover the defect. Three weeks later, the flap was detached from the abdomen, and the abdominal defect was directly closed. Subsequently, the second stage of Masquelet technique was performed at the fracture site at week 10. Finally, all donor and recipient sites healed without complications, such as flap dehiscence, infection, hematoma, or necrosis. Fracture site osteosynthesis was achieved without complications. CONCLUSION: Pedicled abdominal flap using the DIEP provides a reliable option for forearm reconstruction in patients with large soft tissue defects.

RESUMEN

Background: Although several techniques for the treatment of ulnar impaction syndrome (UIS) have been introduced, there have still been reports on various complications such as delayed union, nonunion, refracture, wrist pain, plate irritation, and chronic regional pain syndrome. This study aimed to compare the differences in radiological and clinical outcomes of patients in which intramedullary bone grafting was performed in addition to plate stabilization with those without additional bone grafting during ulnar shortening osteotomies (USOs). Methods: Between November 2014 and June 2021, 53 wrists of 50 patients with idiopathic UIS were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to whether intramedullary bone grafting was performed. Among the 53 wrists, USO with an intramedullary bone graft was performed in 21 wrists and USO without an intramedullary bone graft was performed in 32 wrists. Demographic data and factors potentially associated with bone union time were analyzed. Results: There was no significant difference between the 2 groups when comparing postoperative radioulnar distance, postoperative ulnar variance, amount of ulnar shortening, and postoperative Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand score. Compared to the without-intramedullary bone graft group, bone union time of the osteotomy site was significantly shortened, from 8.8 ± 3.0 weeks to 6.7 ± 1.3 weeks in the with-intramedullary bone graft group. Moreover, there were no cases of nonunion or plate-induced symptoms. Both in univariable and multivariable analyses, intramedullary bone grafting was associated with shorter bone union time. Conclusions: USO with an intramedullary bone graft for idiopathic UIS has favorable radiological and clinical outcomes. The advantage of this technique is the significant shortening of bone union time.

RESUMEN

Biomimetic stress-relaxing hydrogels with reversible crosslinks attract significant attention for stem cell tissue regeneration compared with elastic hydrogels. However, stress-relaxing hyaluronic acid (HA)-based hydrogels fabricated using conventional technologies lack stability, biocompatibility, and mechanical tunability. Here, it is aimed to address these challenges by incorporating calcium or phosphate components into the HA backbone, which allows reversible crosslinking of HA with alginate to form interpenetrating networks, offering stability and mechanical tunability for mimicking cartilage. Diverse stress-relaxing hydrogels (τ1/2; SR50, 60-2000 s) are successfully prepared at ≈3 kPa stiffness with self-healing and shear-thinning abilities, favoring hydrogel injection. In vitro cell experiments with RNA sequencing analysis demonstrate that hydrogels tune chondrogenesis in a biphasic manner (hyaline or calcified) depending on the stress-relaxation properties and phosphate components. In vivo studies confirm the potential for biphasic chondrogenesis. These results indicate that the proposed stress-relaxing HA-based hydrogel with biphasic chondrogenesis (hyaline or calcified) is a promising material for cartilage regeneration.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: A case study was conducted to examine the clinical results and histologic healing of bone grafts performed using an autogenous tooth block (AutoBT block), which was developed recently and proprietary. STUDY DESIGN: Guided bone regeneration, extraction socket graft, sinus bone graft, and ridge augmentation were performed using autogenous tooth block graft material in 12 patients from March 2009 to June 2010. The clinical outcomes of each case were examined, and tissue specimens were collected from 1 case 2.5 months after the bone graft for histopathological analysis. RESULTS: All of the cases had successful bone graft results. One patient developed wound dehiscence after surgery, although favorable secondary healing was achieved. One implant resulted in osseointegration failure. A histopathologic examination was performed after 2.5 months and showed excellent bone healing due to osteoconduction. The AutoBT block was incorporated into the upper soft tissue, aponeurosis, and lower recipient bone. CONCLUSION: There were no notable complications associated with the bone transplant materials. The AutoBT block is clinically useful for a variety of bone grafts.

RESUMEN

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of three-column reconstruction of the lower leg using a single-barrel contralateral vascularized fibular graft (VFG), medial locking plate, and the ipsilateral fibula for the repair of large tibial defects after tumor resection. Methods: In this retrospective study, we reviewed 12 patients who underwent three-column reconstruction using a single-barrel contralateral VFG, medial locking plate, and the ipsilateral fibula between June 1996 and May 2020. These patients had large tibial bone defects following tumor resection. The mean age of the patients was 26.3 years (range, 11-63 years), and 7 of them were women. The mean follow-up period was 104.8 months (range, 26-284 months). The mean size of the tibial bone defect after tumor resection was 17.8 cm (range, 11-26.8 cm). The clinical and radiological outcomes were evaluated at the final follow-up. Results: All patients survived beyond the final follow-up without recurrence of the primary bone tumor. The mean time from reconstruction to bony union at both host-graft junctions was 12.9 months (range, 4-36 months). The mean Musculoskeletal Tumor Society score was 82.3% (range, 60%-97%). All tibial defects were reconstructed with adequate bone healing. There were 4 cases of stress fracture and graft failure; these were resolved by using longer plates and more screws. All patients were ambulatory without assistance and showed no permanent complications. Conclusions: Large tibial defects that occur after tumoral resection can be effectively reconstructed by three-column reconstruction using a medial locking plate, an inlay single-barrel VFG harvested from the contralateral side, and the intact ipsilateral fibula. This technique permits early weight-bearing before fibular hypertrophy and bony union.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The impact of osteopenia as a risk factor for fractures is underrecognized. Moreover, the efficacy of selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) in postmenopausal women with osteopenia is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of SERMs in postmenopausal women with osteopenia. METHODS: Thirty-two postmenopausal women with osteopenia were treated with 3 types of SERMs medication: raloxifene (group I, N=15), bazedoxifene (group II, N=8), and raloxifene with cholecalciferol (group III, N=9). Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scans before treatment to after 3 years of treatment once a year. RESULTS: Patients in group I showed significant increases in hip BMD, -1.93 to -1.73 and spine BMD, -1.85 to -1.67. In addition, patients in groups II and III showed significant increases in hip BMD, -1.93 to -1.69 and -2.22 to -1.86, respectively and spine BMD, -2.1 to -1.3 and -2.22 to -1.37, respectively. The BMD increased in the hip and spine by 9.7% and 10.3%, respectively in group I, 38.0% and 12.4%, respectively in group II, and 38.2% and 16.2%, respectively in group III. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we found that SERMs could improve spine and hip BMD. In conclusion, preemptive treatment using SERMs is necessary for postmenopausal women with osteopenia. None of the patients experienced fractures during the follow-up period.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to evaluate the association between dry eye and inner ear diseases in a Korean population. Methods: Data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey (KNHANES V, 2010−2012), a national cross-sectional health examination and survey, were collected by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The association between dry eye and inner ear disease was determined using the chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. The individuals were divided into two age groups (<60 and ≥60 years). Results: In total, 17,542 individuals (n = 11,932 in the <60 years group and n = 5610 in the ≥60 years group) were enrolled. After adjusting for confounding factors, the logistic regression model revealed that the associated factors were dizziness and loss of balance experience (OR, 1.315; 95% CI, 1.143−1.513), self-awareness of abnormal voice (OR, 1.372; 95% CI, 1.120−1.679), subjective hearing discomfort (OR, 1.278; CI, 1.084−1.506), and tinnitus (OR, 1.265; 95% CI, 1.101−1.453). The inversely associated factor for dry eye was bilateral hearing loss (OR, 0.497; 95% CI, 0.367−0.672). The hearing threshold was lower in the dry eye group than in the non-dry eye group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Tinnitus was associated with dry eye and bilateral hearing loss was inversely associated with dry eye. These results suggest that hypersensitivity of the senses and nerves, which is neuropathic hyperesthesia, is one of the main mechanisms of dry eye. Treatment of neuropathy may help in treating dry eye associated with dizziness or tinnitus.

RESUMEN

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a chronic multisystem endocrine disorder that affects women of reproductive age. In the ovary, the dynamic balance between dormant and growing follicles that culminates in ovulation becomes dysfunctional in the presence of excessive androgen production (ovarian/adrenal/peripheral). Moreover, hyperandrogenicity in pregnancy affects fetal development in utero and is linked to maternal pregnancy complications. Hormonal imbalance, ovarian dysfunction, and central obesity often emerge in these patients during adolescence. Once disordered physiological changes develop in PCOS, a vicious cycle ensues, leading to reproductive, metabolic, and psychological comorbidities. With the alarming increase of the number of young adults with a high degree of obesity in Korea, the prevalence of PCOS has also considerably increased. Timely and accurate screening, multicomponent healthy lifestyle modifications for both patients and family members, and comprehensive medical interventions based on international evidence-based guidelines are essential for curtailing PCOS and its comorbidities.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The isolated liner and head exchange procedure has been an established treatment method for polyethylene wear and osteolysis when the acetabular component remains well fixed. In this study, the mid-term results of this procedure were evaluated retrospectively. METHODS: Among the consecutive patients operated on from September 1995, two patients (three hips) were excluded because of inadequate follow-up, and the results of remaining 34 patients (34 hips) were evaluated. There were 20 men and 14 women with a mean age of 49 years. A conventional polyethylene liner was used in 26 cases and a highly cross-linked polyethylene liner was used in eight cases. In three cases, the liner was cemented in a metal shell because a compatible liner could not be used. RESULTS: After a follow-up of 5 to 20.2 years, re-revision surgery was necessary in 10 cases (29.4%): in eight for wear and osteolysis at 55 to 101 months after liner exchange and in two for acetabular loosening at 1 and 1.5 years after liner exchange. Re-revision surgery included all component revision (four cases), cup revision (four cases), and liner exchange (two cases). In all re-revision cases, a conventional polyethylene liner was used initially. There was no failure in the cases in which a highly cross-linked polyethylene liner was used. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that isolated acetabular liner exchange is a reasonable option for wear and osteolysis when the metal shell is well fixed. More promising long-term results are expected with the use of highly cross-linked polyethylene liners.

RESUMEN

We investigated the stroke recurrence rate and the rate of adverse effects induced by an herbal medicine, Chunghyul-dan, administered to patients over a 5-year period. We prescribed 600 mg Chunghyul-dan a day to patients with small vessel diseases and investigated stroke recurrence, adverse effects, and drug compliance for 5 years. The primary outcome was the prevalence of stroke recurrence (in 3, 4, and 5 years). The secondary outcome was the frequency of adverse effects induced by Chunghyul-dan. We recruited 400 patients. Among them, 270, 233, and 195 patients completed 3, 4, and 5 years of follow-up, respectively. Among patients who completed 3, 4, and 5 years of follow-up, cumulative recurrent stroke occurred in 7 (2.6%), 11 (4.7%), and 12 (6.2%) patients. There were no adverse effects. We suggest that Chunghyul-dan might be useful for the inhibition of stroke recurrence by reducing microangiography progression. Further study is needed to confirm our hypothesis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study examined the osteoinductive activity of demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) from human and polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) for nude mice. METHODS: Twenty healthy nude mice, weighing about 15~20 g, were used for the study. DDM from human and PDRN were prepared and implanted subcutaneously into the dorsal portion of the nude mice. The nude mice were sacrificed at 1, 2, and 4 weeks after grafting and evaluated histologically by hematoxylin-eosin and Masson's trichrome staining. The specimens were also evaluated via a histomorphometric study. RESULTS: The DDM and PDRN induced new bone, osteoblasts, and fibroblasts in soft tissues. The histological findings showed bone-forming cells like osteoblasts and fibroblasts at 1, 2, and 4 weeks. New bone formation was observed in the histomorphometric study. In particular, the ratio of new bone formation was the highest at 2 weeks compared with the first week and fourth week. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we showed that the PDRN used in this experimental model was able to induce bone regeneration when combined to the DDM.

RESUMEN

In this study, we investigated the hepatoprotective and anti-fibrotic effects of zingerone, one of the active components of ginger, against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)- and dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-induced liver injuries in rats, respectively. Oral administration of zingerone (10 mg/kg) reduced CCl4-induced abnormalities in liver histology, serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels, and liver malondialdehyde levels. Zingerone treatment attenuated CCl4-induced increases in inflammatory mediators, including tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1ß, cyclooxygenase-2, and inducible nitric oxide synthase mRNA levels. Western blot analysis showed that zingerone suppressed activation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) p65 and phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase, c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase, and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). Liver fibrosis induced by DMN (10 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) was ameliorated by administration of zingerone (10 and 20 mg/kg, orally). Zingerone treatment reduced DMN-induced elevation of hydroxyproline content and hepatic stellate cell activation. In conclusion, zingerone showed antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects in CCl4-intoxicated rats by inhibiting oxidative stress and NF-κB activation via blockade of the activation of upstream MAPKs. Moreover, zingerone had hepatoprotective and anti-fibrotic effects against DMN-induced liver injury suggesting its usefulness in the prevention of liver inflammation and the development of hepatic fibrosis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to determine the correlation of clinicopathological factors and the up-regulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Immunohistochemical staining of VEGF and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of VEGF mRNA were performed in 20 specimens from 20 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma and another 20 specimens from 20 patients with carcinoma in situ as a controlled group. RESULTS: The results were as follows: 1) In immunohistochemical study of poorly differentiated and invasive oral squamous cell carcinoma, high-level staining of VEGF was observed. Significant correlation was observed between immunohistochemical VEGF expression and histologic differentiation, tumor size of specimens (Pearson correlation analysis, significance r>0.6, P<0.05). 2) In VEGF quantitative RT-PCR analysis, progressive cancer showed more VEGF expression than carcinoma in situ. Paired-samples analysis determined the difference of VEGF mRNA expression level between cancer tissue and carcinoma in situ tissue, between T1 and T2-4 (Student's t-test, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that up-regulation of VEGF may play a role in the angiogenesis and progression of oral squamous cell carcinoma.
