RESUMEN

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an immune-mediated acute polyradiculoneuropathy and commonly occurs after a preceding infection or immunization sequalae. Following the severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 virus pandemic with co-introduction of massive vaccinations, several GBS cases associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection per se or after vaccination for COVID-19 were reported internationally. Herein, we report two cases of Korean GBS presenting with tetraplegia after two different COVID-19 vaccinations (42-year old man by AstraZeneca and 48-year woman by Pfizer vaccines) within four weeks after vaccination. The patients were diagnosed with clinical examination, serial electromyography, and compatible laboratory results and improved after comprehensive rehabilitative treatment and intravenous immunoglobulin therapy. Furthermore, we performed an electrodiagnostic follow-up study of each case to examine their unique characteristics.

The objectives of this study were to determine (1) the phosphorus (P) level required to induce cadmium (Cd) precipitation in a contaminated arable soil with low concentrations of Cd and (2) the primary mechanism of Cd immobilization at different P levels. Phosphorus was added at levels of 0 800, 1600, and 16,000 mg P kg(-1) to a soil containing 5.57 mg Cd kg(-1). The concentration of 1 M NH4OAc extractable Cd decreased significantly with P levels up to 1600 mg kg(-1) due to an increase in soil pH and negative charge of soil (p<0.001). A further decrease in 1 M NH4OAc extractable Cd concentration was noted when P was increased to 16,000 mg P kg(-1) and may have been the result of Cd precipitation. This study suggest that adding P at high levels may help in the formation of geochemically stable Cd minerals in soil containing low levels of this heavy metal.

The objective of this study was to determine soil pH conditions that allow cadmium (Cd) to precipitate as Cd minerals in phosphate (P) amended soil. Cadmium immobilization could be attributed primarily to Cd adsorption due to increase in pH and negative charge. Soil pH might not affect Cd precipitation as Cd3(PO4)2 by direct reaction of Cd and P in the studied soil, even when soil pH increased up to 9.0. However, Cd might precipitate as CdCO3 with increasing pH up to 9.0 in P untreated soil and up to 8.0 in P treated soil depending on CO2 level.

Insulin-like peptides (ILPs) mediate various physiological processes in insects. Specifically, ILP expression is required for immature development in different insects. The western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, is polyphagous, but its occurrence and population density vary among different hosts. This study assesses the developmental variations in the thrips through quantitative analysis of their ILP expressions. Two types of ILPs (Fo-ILP1 and Fo-ILP2) were identified from the genome of F. occidentalis, and both ILPs were predicted to have the characteristics of signal peptides and B-C-A chains linked by cysteines. A phylogenetic analysis indicates that these two ILPs in the thrips are clustered with the ILP1 of Drosophila melanogaster, suggesting their physiological roles in growth. In addition, the two ILP genes were relatively highly expressed at all feeding stages, but their expression was reduced during the nonfeeding prepupal and pupal stages. Furthermore, RNA interference of each ILP expression led to significant developmental retardation. In validating the ILP expression in the thrips' development, five different varieties of host hot peppers were assessed in a choice test, along with the immature development of F. occidentalis. The expression levels of the two ILP genes were highly correlated with variations in the immature developmental rates of different hot pepper varieties. These suggest that Fo-ILP1 and Fo-ILP2 mediate the immature development of F. occidentalis by sensing different nutritional values of hot peppers. This study is the first report on ILPs in thysanopteran insects.

Purpose: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common chronic complication of herpes zoster, associated with poor quality of life and increased patient and healthcare resource expenditure. This randomized controlled trial aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of SIKD1977 (Sogeonjungtang) in combination with standard treatment and estimate an effective dose for treating PHN. Patients and Methods: This is a protocol for a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, multicenter trial. A total of 90 eligible participants with PHN will be recruited from three hospitals and randomly allocated to high-dose group, low-dose group, or placebo group in a 1:1:1 ratio. The trial will involve a 6-week oral administration of SIKD1977/placebo, and a 1-week follow-up period. The primary outcome will be the weekly average change in average daily pain score (ADPS) from baseline to the end of treatment. The secondary outcomes will include the weekly average changes in ADPS from baseline to week 2, 4, and 7, differences in Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire, Visual analogue scale, 5-level EuroQol-5 dimensions, Patient Global Impression of Change, and consumption of rescue drugs. All adverse events will be assessed during the trial. Conclusion: This study will provide evidence for the efficacy and safety of SIKD1977, and an effective dose for PHN. Trial Registration: This protocol has been registered in the Clinical Research Information Service with the identification code KCT0007939.

Reovirus functions as an oncolytic agent for many types of cancer including colon cancer. Although most studies have emphasized the role of activated Ras signaling in enhancing reoviral oncolysis in susceptible cells, we note that many colon cancers also display elevated beta-catenin. Thus, it is possible that enhanced beta-catenin may augment reoviral susceptibility in colon cancer cells. To explore this hypothesis, HEK293 cells were treated with the glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3beta inhibitor LiCl, thereby inducing beta-catenin, followed by reoviral infection. Co-administration with LiCl indeed enhanced cell death compared to reovirus infection alone, but this was not associated with elevated reoviral replication. Similarly, HEK293 cells expressing the Frizzled-1 receptor in Wnt3a-conditioned medium also showed reovirus replication equivalent to that in cells in control medium, further suggesting that up-regulation of beta-catenin does not enhance the replication of reovirus. Instead, we observed that inhibition of GSK-3beta with LiCl decreased reovirus-induced NF-kappaB activation, leading to accelerated apoptosis via caspase 8 activation. We further found that colon cancer HCT116 cells were sensitized to apoptosis by co-treatment with reovirus and a GSK-3beta inhibitor, AR-A014418. Finally, we identified that inhibition of NF-kappaB sensitized apoptosis of HEK293 or HCT 116 cells during reovirus infection. Taken together, we propose that inhibition of GSK-3beta sensitizes reovirus-induced apoptosis of colon cancer cells by down-regulation of NF-kappaB activity, offering a potentially improved therapeutic strategy for the treatment of colon cancer.

Chiral phase transfer catalysts of dimeric cinchona ammonium salts linked with a benzophenone bridge showed high enantioselectivity in the α-alkylation of a glycinate ester under mild industry-applicable conditions: 0.5 mol% PTC and near equivalents of alkyl halide. A dual function of the dimeric quinuclidiniums was proposed for the high efficiency.

Xenorhabdus nematophila is the symbiotic bacterium of an entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema carpocapsae. When the nematode enters a target insect, the symbiotic bacteria are released into the hemocoel. After inducing host immunosuppression, the bacteria multiply in the hemocoel and cause fatal septicemia. For optimal field application to control insect pests, culturing mass numbers of the nematodes would be costly. In this study, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) was chosen as an alternative natural vector, which would be relatively economical for field application. Bt infection of gut epithelium would form a bacterial passage between the gut lumen and hemocoel, which facilitates the orally fed X. nematophila to infect the hemocoel. Diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), used in this study was tolerant to Bt because only 10% mortality was noted in response to 2 times higher concentration than recommended for commercial B. t. kurstaki, although this species was susceptible only during early instars. The orally fed X. nematophila caused significant mortality to early instars of P. xylostella, but not late instars. When both X. nematophila and Bt were fed to late instars of P. xylostella, they showed significantly enhanced mortality, in which X. nematophila cells were recovered from the hemocoel of the treated P. xylostella. However, when only X. nematophila was fed, no cells were recovered from the hemolymph. This study suggests that X. nematophila can be applied to control P. xylostella in a mixture with Bt in the field without its nematode host.

Acetobacter strains are bacteria that can synthesize cellulose when grown in a complex medium containing glucose. The effect of the components of a synthetic medium on bacterial cellulose (BC) production by a newly isolated Acetobacter sp. V6 in shaking cultures was investigated. BC production was dependent on the presence of MgSO4 x 7H2O and cosubstrates such as ethanol and lactic acid in the medium. The optimal synthetic medium contained 1.5% glucose, 0.2% (NH4)2SO4, 0.3% KH2PO4, 0.3% Na2HPO4 x 12H2O, 0.08% MgSO4 x 7H2O, 0.0005% FeSO4 x 7H2O, 0.0003% H3BO3, 0.00005% nicotinamide, and 0.6% ethanol. A maximum BC concentration of 4.16 g/l was achieved after 8 days of cultivation at 200 rpm. The production of BC by Acetobacter sp. V6 was higher in synthetic medium than complex medium (Hestrin and Schramm medium) traditionally used for Acetobacter strains.

Tsukamurella pulmonis is an aerobic actinomycete. We report a catheter-related bacteremia of T. pulmonis. A 39 yr-old male with ALL was hospitalized to receive bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Although the patient developed a high fever at the 7th hospital day (HD), it subsided with vancomycin treatment, and he received BMT at 9th HD. Fever resurged at 16th HD despite sustained treatment with vancomycin, meropenem, and amphotericin B, but subsided with removal of Hickman catheter (HC) at 19th HD. Three sets of blood cultures comprising one from the HC and two from venipunctures were taken at 7th, 16th, and 19th HD, and the distal tip of the HC was also cultured. The aerobic vials of all 3 HC-withdrawn blood cultures and one peripheral blood culture taken at 19HD and the HC tip culture grew long, straight, thin gram-positive rods that were positive on modified Kinyoun stain. This organism showed tiny, rough, grey colonies after 3-day incubation and grew to large flat colonies when incubation was extended. It was catalase-positive, urease-positive, and alkaline-slant/alkaline-deep on triple sugar iron agar, and hydrolyzed hypoxanthine. The sequence of 1,296 base pairs of 16S rRNA of this organism showed a 100.0% homology with the published sequence of T. pulmonis DSM 44142T. To our knowledge, this is the first report of T. pulmonis bacteremia in Korea.
