RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to compare and quantify the surface changes seen in two most commonly used orthodontic miniscrew implants (MSI) materials; titanium and stainless steel after their clinical use. METHODS: 40 MSIs (20 titanium and 20 stainless steel) were retrieved from the maxillary arch of 20 subjects (13 females and 7 males) in the age group of 18 - 27 years (mean age=22.4 ± 3.83 years) after their intended use. 40 (20 titanium and 20 stainless steel) asreceived MSIs were used as control. All the MSIs were analyzed under a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) for the characterization of their morphological condition (blunting of tip, surface defects and corrosion). Furthermore, Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) microanalysis was carried out to study the changes in surface characterization. RESULTS: When imaged using SEM, as-received Titanium and Stainless Steel MSIs demonstrated a relatively smooth surface with no surface defects. However, the retrieved titanium and stainless-steel implants showed increased surface defects (both corrosion and cracks) with the difference being statistically significant. The retrieved Titanium MSIs (115.31±24.38µm) showed 4 times more blunting compared to the retrieved Stainless-steel MSIs (29.74±8.56 µm), with the latter showing 2-3 times more surface corrosion. CONCLUSION: Clinical usage had pronounced effects on both Titanium and Stainless steel MSI alloys in terms of changes in the surface characteristics. While stainless steel MSIs are more susceptible to surface corrosion, Titanium MSIs exhibit greater alterations in the form of tipblunting and cracks in screw threads.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: We aimed to determine the fluoride release and fluoride-recharging ability of a sealant containing surface pre-reacted glass (S-PRG) ionomer filler particles (BeautiSealant) with a fluoride-releasing resin sealant (Helioseal F), and a glass-ionomer sealant (Fuji VII). METHODOLOGY: Forty-eight disc-shaped specimens of each material were immersed in deionized water to determine the fluoride release utilizing a fluoride ion-selective electrode. After 21 days, 8 specimens were soaked in 0.22% Sodium Fluoride solution for 2 min; 8 specimens were coated with 1.23% Acidulated Phosphate Fluoride (APF) gel for 4 min, and the fluoride-recharging ability was evaluated for 40 days. Data were analyzed using one way-ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc tests. RESULTS: Total fluoride release over the 21-day period was: Fuji VII > BeautiSealant > Helioseal F, (P = 0.000). After refluoridation of the specimens with 0.22% Sodium Fluoride solution, the cumulative fluoride release during the 40-day period for each material was: BeautiSealant > Fuji VII > Helioseal (P = 0.000). After exposure to 1.23% APF gel, the cumulative fluoride release during the 40-day period for each material was: BeautiSealant > Fuji VII > Helioseal F (P = 0.000). CONCLUSION: Glass ionomer-based sealants (Fuji VII) exhibited higher initial fluoride release whilst the surface pre-reacted glass-ionomer filler containing sealant (BeautiSealant) demonstrated superior fluoride recharging properties.

RESUMEN

Transmigration is the pre-eruptive intrabony migration of a tooth across the midline. This rare phenomenon, the etiology of which is unknown, is usually seen in canines. Two cases of transmigration in the mandibular canines are reported; one shows the transposition of a mandibular canine and premolar. Familial occurence of this phenomenon and a 5-year follow-up showing a change in the inclination of the impacted tooth are outlined.
