RESUMEN

Crystal lattice fluctuations, which are known to influence phase transitions of quantum materials in equilibrium, are also expected to determine the dynamics of light-induced phase changes. However, they have only rarely been explored in these dynamical settings. Here we study the time evolution of lattice fluctuations in the quantum paraelectric SrTiO3, in which mid-infrared drives have been shown to induce a metastable ferroelectric state. Crucial in these physics is the competition between polar instabilities and antiferrodistortive rotations, which in equilibrium frustrate the formation of long-range ferroelectricity. We make use of high-intensity mid-infrared optical pulses to resonantly drive the Ti-O-stretching mode at 17 THz, and we measure the resulting change in lattice fluctuations using time-resolved X-ray diffuse scattering at a free-electron laser. After a prompt increase, we observe a long-lived quench in R-point antiferrodistortive lattice fluctuations. Their enhancement and reduction are theoretically explained by considering the fourth-order nonlinear phononic interactions to the driven optical phonon and third-order coupling to lattice strain, respectively. These observations provide a number of testable hypotheses for the physics of light-induced ferroelectricity.

Using femtosecond time-resolved x-ray diffraction, we investigated optically excited coherent acoustic phonons in the Weyl semimetal TaAs. The low symmetry of the (112) surface probed in our experiment enables the simultaneous excitation of longitudinal and shear acoustic modes, whose dispersion closely matches our simulations. We observed an asymmetry in the spectral line shape of the longitudinal mode that is notably absent from the shear mode, suggesting a time-dependent frequency chirp that is likely driven by photoinduced carrier diffusion. We argue on the basis of symmetry that these acoustic deformations can transiently alter the electronic structure near the Weyl points and support this with model calculations. Our study underscores the benefit of using off-axis crystal orientations when optically exciting acoustic deformations in topological semimetals, allowing one to transiently change their crystal and electronic structures.

Few digeneans of the family Fellodistomidae are known from the Russian Arctic seas. The taxonomic status of these species, their life cycles and host range raised recurrent questions, some of which remain unanswered. To revise the species composition and life cycles of fellodistomids in the White Sea, we searched for them in several known and suspected hosts: wolffish, flatfishes (definitive), gastropods of the family Buccinidae (second intermediate) and protobranch bivalves (first intermediate). Species identification was based both on morphology and 28S ribosomal RNA gene sequences. We found Fellodistomum agnotum in the White Sea for the first time. Buccinum undatum was proved to be intermediate host of both F. agnotum and Fellodistomum fellis, and metacercariae of F. fellis were registered from two more buccinid species: Buccinum scalariforme and Neptunea despecta. We also found metacercariae of F. agnotum and F. fellis producing eggs in the second intermediate host. Two fellodistomids were found in protobranch bivalves: sporocysts and cercariae of Steringophorus furciger in Nuculana pernula, and sporocysts with large furcocercous cercariae in Ennucula tenuis. The latter were identified as F. agnotum by molecular analysis; thus, the entire life cycle of this species was reconstructed.

We study URu_{2-x}Fe_{x}Si_{2}, in which two types of staggered phases compete at low temperature as the iron concentration x is varied: the nonmagnetic "hidden order" (HO) phase below the critical concentration x_{c}, and unconventional antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase above x_{c}. By using polarization resolved Raman spectroscopy, we detect a collective mode of pseudovectorlike A_{2g} symmetry whose energy continuously evolves with increasing x; it monotonically decreases in the HO phase until it vanishes at x=x_{c}, and then reappears with increasing energy in the AFM phase. The mode's evolution provides direct evidence for a unified order parameter for both nonmagnetic and magnetic phases arising from the orbital degrees-of-freedom of the uranium-5f electrons.

Composition of the fauna of organisms associated with Mytilus edulis in the Kandalaksha and Onega Gulfs of the White Sea has been examined. The following 8 symbiotic species were revealed: Choricystis sp. (Chloro[hyceae), Peniculistoma mytili, Ancistrum mytili (Ciliata, Oligohymenophorea), Urastoma cyprinae, Paravortex sp. (Platyhelminthes, Rhabditophora), and metacercaria of Cercaria parvicaudata, Himasthla sp., and Gymnophallus sp. (Platyhelminthes, Trematoda). Besides, different free-living organisms were found in the mantle cavity; 6 species of nematodes, the planktonic copepod Microsetella norvegica, undetermined copepods, isopod Jaera sp., sea mites of the family Halacaridae, and chironomid larvae. Parameters of infestation and places of localization in the host are given for each group of organisms. Some regularities in the horizontal and vertical distribution of organisms associated with M. edulis are noted.

RESUMEN

Carcinoembryonic antigen was studied in 241 controls--patients with different diseases, 121 cases of intestinal polyp, 69 cases of large bowel carcinoma, 28 cases of stomach cancer and 65 patients with malignancies at other sites (total-524). Significantly high levels were found in large bowel and stomach cancer as well as cases of extensive tumor growth, relapse or metastases.

We measured concentrations of defensins (human neutrophil peptides) in the plasma of healthy volunteers and patients with sepsis and meningitis. When a sensitive enzyme immunoassay was used, defensins were detected in plasma samples from 13 of 24 healthy blood donors, with a mean +/- SD of 42 +/- 53 ng/ml. Defensin levels in plasma samples from seven patients with sepsis at the onset of disease ranged from 900 ng/ml to 170,000 ng/ml. In 10 patients with meningitis in the initial phase of disease, plasma defensin concentrations ranged from 120 ng/ml to 910 ng/ml. Defensin concentrations in the plasma of both patient groups were significantly higher than those in healthy blood donors (p << 0.01), and patients with sepsis had higher defensin levels than patients with meningitis (p < 0.01). Defensin levels were significantly (p < 0.01) lower after the beginning of specific antibiotic therapy. Defensin concentrations in the plasma of patients with sepsis and meningitis correlated only weakly (r = 0.38) with blood neutrophil count. In vitro studies of defensin added to plasma indicated that all defensin was bound to plasma proteins. At high concentrations (1000 micrograms/ml), defensins caused precipitation of plasma proteins. Because plasma defensin levels may reflect neutrophil activation at sites of infection and inflammation, studies of the clinical utility of defensin ELISA are indicated.
