RESUMEN

Detection of oral mucosal lesions has been performed by an in-house developed fluorescence-based portable device in the present study. A laser diode of 405 nm wavelength and a UV-visible spectrometer are utilized in the portable device as excitation and detection sources. At the 405 nm excitation wavelength, the flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) band at 500 nm and three porphyrin bands at 634, 676, and 703 nm are observed in the fluorescence spectrum of the oral cavity tissue. We have conducted this clinical study on a total of 189 tissue sites of 36 oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients, 18 dysplastic (precancerous) patients, and 34 volunteers. Analysis of the fluorescence data has been performed by using the principal component analysis (PCA) method and support vector machine (SVM) classifier. PCA is applied first in the spectral data to reduce the dimension, and then classification among the three groups has been executed by employing the SVM. The SVM classifier includes linear, radial basis function (RBF), polynomial, and sigmoid kernels, and their classification efficacies are computed. Linear and RBF kernels on the testing data sets differentiated OSCC and dysplasia to normal with an accuracy of 100% and OSCC to dysplasia with an accuracy of 95% and 97%, respectively. Polynomial and sigmoid kernels showed less accuracy values among the groups ranging from 48 to 88% and 51 to 100%, respectively. The result indicates that fluorescence spectroscopy and the SVM classifier can help to identify early oral mucosal lesions with significant high accuracy.

Progression of oral mucosal lesions is generally marked by changes in the concentration of the intrinsic fluorophores such as collagen, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and porphyrin present in the human oral tissue. In this study, we have probed the changes in FAD and porphyrin by exciting with 405 nm laser light on different sites (tongue, buccal mucosa, lip etc.) of the oral cavity. Testing has been done by an in-house developed fluorescence-based portable imaging device on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients, dysplastic patients and control (normal) group. Fluorescence images recorded from OSCC and dysplastic patients have displayed an enhancement in the red band (porphyrin) as compared to those from the normal volunteers. Porphyrin to FAD intensity ratio (IPorphyrin/IFAD), referred to red to green ratio (Ired/Igreen) has been taken as the diagnostic marker for classification among the groups. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis applied on IPorphyrin/IFAD is able to discriminate OSCC to normal, dysplasia to normal and OSCC to dysplasia with sensitivities of 100%, 81%, 92% and specificities of 100%, 93% and 92% respectively. Fluorescence imaging probe can capture a large area of oral lesions in a single scan and hence would be useful for initial scanning. On comparison with spectroscopy studies performed by our group, it is found that combining both spectroscopy and imaging as a device may be effective for the early detection of oral lesions. This clinical study was registered on the date 13/10/2017 in the clinical trials registry-India (CTRI) with registration number CTRI/2017/10/010102.

There has been a long-lasting impact of the lockdown imposed due to COVID-19 on several fronts. One such front is climate which has seen several implications. The consequences of climate change owing to this lockdown need to be explored taking into consideration various climatic indicators. Further impact on a local and global level would help the policymakers in drafting effective rules for handling challenges of climate change. For in-depth understanding, a temporal study is being conducted in a phased manner in the New Delhi region taking NO2 concentration and utilizing statistical methods to elaborate the quality of air during the lockdown and compared with a pre-lockdown period. In situ mean values of the NO2 concentration were taken for four different dates, viz. 4th February, 4th March, 4th April, and 25th April 2020. These concentrations were then compared with the Sentinel (5p) data across 36 locations in New Delhi which are found to be promising. The results indicated that the air quality has been improved maximum in Eastern Delhi and the NO2 concentrations were reduced by one-fourth than the pre-lockdown period, and thus, reduced activities due to lockdown have had a significant impact. The result also indicates the preciseness of Sentinel (5p) for NO2 concentrations.

Background and Aims: Using a humidifier in intubated patients is now a standard of care as the humidifying effect of the upper airway is lost. We conducted this study to compare the efficacy of a heated humidifier (HH) with the more commonly used conventional mist nebulizer on overnight intubated and spontaneously breathing post-operative patients. Material and Methods: This prospective, randomized control trial included 60 post-operative overnight intubated and spontaneously breathing patients, of which 30 patients were allocated to the HH group and 30 to the mist nebulizer group. The reduction of endotracheal tube (ETT) patency was measured quantitatively by the difference between the pre-intubation and immediate post-extubation ETT volume and compared between the two groups. Also, the characteristics of secretion, the temperature of inspired gas at the Y-piece, and the frequency of refilling the humidifier chamber were recorded and compared. Results: The reduction of ETT volume was significantly more in the mist nebulizer group compared to the HH group (P-value 0.00026). The mean temperature of the inspired gas (°C) was higher in the HH group (P-value < 0.0001). More patients in the mist nebulizer group had thicker (P-value 0.057) and drier secretions (P-value 0.005) compared to the HH group. None of the patients in the HH group required refilling of the humidifier chamber while the mean frequency of the refilling was 3.5 times per patient in the mist nebulizer group. Conclusion: HH may be preferred over mist nebulizer as the latter requires more frequent refilling which may not be practically possible in a busy recovery room rendering the patient at the risk of inhaling dry gas and consequent thick and dry secretions with decreased ETT patency.

BACKGROUND: Biomarkers of unfavourable tuberculosis (TB) treatment outcomes are needed to accelerate new drug and regimen development. Whether plasma cytokine levels can predict unfavourable TB treatment outcomes is unclear. METHODS: We identified and internally validated the association between 20 a priori selected plasma inflammatory markers and unfavourable treatment outcomes of failure, recurrence and all-cause mortality among adults with drug-sensitive pulmonary TB in India. We externally validated these findings in two independent cohorts of predominantly diabetic and HIV co-infected TB patients in India and South Africa, respectively. RESULTS: Pre-treatment interferon-γ, interleukin (IL)-13 and IL-6 were associated with treatment failure in the discovery analysis. Internal validation confirmed higher pre-treatment IL-6 concentrations among failure cases compared with controls. External validation among predominantly diabetic TB patients found an association between pre-treatment IL-6 concentrations and subsequent recurrence and death. Similarly, external validation among predominantly HIV co-infected TB patients found an association between pre-treatment IL-6 concentrations and subsequent treatment failure and death. In a pooled analysis of 363 TB cases from the Indian and South African validation cohorts, high pre-treatment IL-6 concentrations were associated with higher risk of failure (adjusted OR (aOR) 2.16, 95% CI 1.08-4.33; p=0.02), recurrence (aOR 5.36, 95% CI 2.48-11.57; p<0.001) and death (aOR 4.62, 95% CI 1.95-10.95; p<0.001). Adding baseline IL-6 to a risk prediction model comprised of low body mass index, high smear grade and cavitation improved model performance by 15% (C-statistic 0.66 versus 0.76; p=0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Pre-treatment IL-6 is a biomarker for unfavourable TB treatment outcomes. Future studies should identify optimal IL-6 concentrations for point-of-care risk prediction.

Treating livestock as senseless production machines has led to rampant depletion of natural resources, enhanced greenhouse gas emissions, gross animal welfare violations, and other ethical issues. It has essentially instigated constant scrutiny of conventional meat production by various experts and scientists. Sustainably in the meat sector is a big challenge which requires a multifaced and holistic approach. Novel tools like digitalization of the farming system and livestock market, precision livestock farming, application of remote sensing and artificial intelligence to manage production and environmental impact/GHG emission, can help in attaining sustainability in this sector. Further, improving nutrient use efficiency and recycling in feed and animal production through integration with agroecology and industrial ecology, improving individual animal and herd health by ensuring proper biosecurity measures and selective breeding, and welfare by mitigating animal stress during production are also key elements in achieving sustainability in meat production. In addition, sustainability bears a direct relationship with various social dimensions of meat production efficiency such as non-market attributes, balance between demand and consumption, market and policy failures. The present review critically examines the various aspects that significantly impact the efficiency and sustainability of meat production.

Head and neck cancer detection using fluorescence spectroscopy from human saliva is reported here. This study has been conducted on squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and dysplastic (precancer) and control (normal) groups using an in-house developed compact set-up. Fluorescence set-up consists of a 375-nm laser diode and optical components. Spectral bands of flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), porphyrins, and Raman are observed in the spectral range of 400 to 800 nm. Presence of FAD and porphyrin bands in human saliva is confirmed by the liquid phantoms of FAD and porphyrin. Significant differences in fluorescence intensities among all the three groups are observed. Three spectral ranges from 455 to 600, 605 to 770, and 400 to 800 nm are selected for each group and area values under each spectral range are computed. To differentiate among the groups, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis is employed on the area values. ROC differentiates among the groups with accuracies of 98%, 92.85%, and 81.13% respectively in the spectral ranges of 400 to 800 nm. However, in other two spectral ranges (455 to 600 and 605 to 770 nm), low accuracy values are found. Obtained accuracy values indicate that selection of human saliva for head and neck cancer detection may be a good alternative.

Lipid oxidation and microbial proliferations were studied in pork loaves prepared with incorporation of blood and liver protein hydrolysates stored in aerobic and MAP packaging for 28 and 42 days at 4 ± 1 ºC. In in-vitro trials selected levels i.e. blood hydrolysate (T1 and T3-600 mg/g), and liver hydrolysate (T2 and T4-600 mg/g), control without hydrolysate (C1-00 and C2-00 mg/g) w/w of emulsion, were added into pork loaves and packaged under aerobic (C1, T1 and T2) and MAP (C2, T3 and T4) condition. Physico-chemicals as pH, water activity, titratable acidity, lipid-oxidations, color profile, textural indices, microbial qualities and sensorial properties were analyzed. Significant (p < 0.05) lower lipid oxidation, microbial proliferations and decrease in sensory attributes were seen for tested groups and MAP than aerobic packaging. It can be concluded that pork loaves containing porcine blood and liver hydrolysates can be successfully stored upto 28th days in aerobically packed and 42 days in MAP condition at refrigerated storage with acceptable physico-chemical, oxidative stability, microbiological and sensory quality. Whereas, pork loves prepared with blood hydrolysate (T3-600 mg/g), packaged under MAP condition were superior for all studied attributes than other groups. Blood and liver hydrolysate might be used as an alternative to synthetic preservative for meat preservation.

Background: India is the epicenter of diabetes mellitus (DM). The relationship between COVID and DM in age/gender-matched non-diabetics has not been studied yet. The role of DM in predicting the disease severity and outcome in COVID patients might provide new insight for effective management. Methods: We conducted a prospective comparative study at a COVID care center from 25th April-31st May 2021. Among 357 severe-COVID patients screened, all consecutive diabetes (n-113) and age/gender-matched non-diabetes (n-113) patients were recruited. All diabetics and non-diabetics at admission were subjected to high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) chest and inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein (CRP), D-dimer, ferritin, interleukin-6 (IL-6), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR)) before starting anti- COVID therapy. Statistical analysis was done using JMP 15·0 ver·3·0·0. Results: The prevalence of DM among the screened population (n-357) was 38·37%. The mean age of the study population was 61y with male preponderance (57%). There was no statistical difference in the HRCT-score or inflammatory markers in the two groups except for higher NLR (p-0·0283) in diabetics. Diabetics had significantly inferior overall survival (OS) (p-0·0251) with a 15d-OS of diabetics vs. non-diabetics being 58·87%, 72·67%, and 30d-OS of diabetics vs. non-diabetics being 46·76%, 64·61%, respectively. The duration of the hospital stay was not statistically different in the two groups (p-0·2). Conclusion: The mortality is significantly higher in severe-COVID patients with DM when compared to age/gender-matched non-diabetics. There was no significant difference in most inflammatory markers/CT at admission between the two groups.

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by the occurrence of spontaneous and recurrent seizures. In post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE), the mechanism of epileptogenesis is very complex and seems to be linked with voltage-gated ion channels. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a neurosteroid have shown beneficial effect against various neurological disorders. We investigated antiepileptic effect of DHEA with respect to expression of voltage-gated ion channels subtypes in iron-induced epilepsy. Iron (FeCl3) solution was intracartically injected to induce epilepsy in rats and DHEA was intraperitoneally administered for 21 days. Results showed markedly increased epileptiform seizures activity along with up-regulation of Nav1.1 and Nav1.6, and down-regulation of Cav2.1α at the mRNA and protein level in the cortex and hippocampus of epileptic rats. Moreover, the study demonstrated that these channels subtypes were predominantly expressed in the neurons. DHEA treatment has countered the epileptic seizures, down-regulated Nav1.1 and Nav1.6, and up-regulated Cav2.1α without affecting their cellular localization. In conclusion, the present study demonstrates antiepileptic potential of DHEA, escorted by regulation of Nav1.1, Nav1.6, and Cav2.1α subtypes in the neurons of iron-induced epileptic rats.

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is an important economic fruit crop, facing many biotic and abiotic challenges during cultivation. Several research programs are in progress to understand both biotic and abiotic stress factors and mitigate these challenges using gene expression studies based on the qPCR approach. However, research publications are not available yet to select the standard reference gene for normalizing target gene expression values in pomegranate. The most suitable candidate reference gene is required to ensure precise and reliable results for qPCR analysis. Eight candidate reference genes' stability was evaluated under different stress conditions using different algorithms such as ∆Ct, geNorm, BestKeeper, NormFinder, and RefFinder. The various algorithms revealed that EFA1 and 18S rRNA were common and most stable reference genes (RGs) under abiotic and wilt stress. Whereas comprehensive ranking by RefFinder showed GAPDH and CYPF were the most stable RGs under combined biotic (pooled samples of all biotic stress) and bacterial blight samples. For normalizing target gene expression under wilt, nematode, bacterial blight, and abiotic stress conditions both GAPDH and CYPFreference genes are adequate for qPCR. The above data provide comprehensive details for the selection of a candidate reference gene in various stresses in pomegranate.

Globally, the prevalence of Atopic dermatitis (AD) is significantly increasing and affecting around 20% of population including children. Complex interactions amongst abnormality in epidermal barrier function, environment, infectious agents and immunological defects are considered as key factors in the pathogenesis of AD. Although the role of oxidative stress has been studied in some skin diseases, investigation of the same in AD is intermittent. Calcineurin inhibitors and/or topical corticosteroids are currently available; however, it causes atrophy of the skin, burning sensation, and systemic side effects which leads to poor patient compliance. These limitations provoke the strong need to develop an innovative approach in managing AD. Nanomaterials for effective drug delivery to skin conditions such as AD have attracted a lot of attention owing to its ability to encapsulate, protect, and release the cargo at the diseased skin site. However, there are lots of unmet challenges especially in terms of development of non-toxic formulations and clinical translation of established nanomedicines in the form of accessible products. Numerous formulations have emerged as carrier for poorly soluble and permeable drugs, viz., lipidic, polymeric, metal, silica, liposomes, hydrocarbon gels and this field is evolving. This review is intended to provide an insight incidences associated with pathophysiology of AD and challenges with existing treatments of AD. Focus is kept on reviewing current development and emerging nanomedicines for effective treatment of AD. The review also inculcates merits of several nanomedicines in overcoming challenges of existing products and its future implications.

Manifestation of neurological symptoms in certain patients of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) has warranted for their virus-induced etiogenesis. SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, belongs to the genus of betacoronaviruses which also includes SARS-CoV-1 and MERS-CoV; causative agents for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2002 and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) in 2012, respectively. Studies demonstrating the neural invasion of SARS-CoV-2 in vivo are still scarce, although such characteristics of certain other betacoronaviruses are well demonstrated in the literature. Based on the recent evidence for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 host cell entry receptors in specific components of the human nervous and vascular tissue, a neural (olfactory and/or vagal), and a hematogenous-crossing the blood-brain barrier, routes have been proposed. The neurological symptoms in COVID-19 may also arise as a consequence of the "cytokine storm" (characteristically present in severe disease) induced neuroinflammation, or co-morbidities. There is also a possibility that, there may be multiple routes of SARS-CoV-2 entry into the brain, or multiple mechanisms can be involved in the pathogenesis of the neurological symptoms. In this review article, we have discussed the possible routes of SARS-CoV-2 brain entry based on the emerging evidence for this virus, and that available for other betacoronaviruses in literature.

Endoscopic dilatation is the recommended primary therapy for chronic corrosive esophageal strictures (ES), and surgery is reserved for failed dilatation. Through this study, we intend to analyze the efficacy and long-term outcomes of both endoscopic and surgical interventions in corrosive ES. A retrospective cohort analysis of patients with chronic corrosive ES, managed with endoscopic or surgical procedures at a tertiary teaching institute in North India from December 2009 to December 2016, was performed from a prospectively maintained database. The primary outcome measure was the absence of dysphagia following dilatation or surgery. During the study period, 64 patients with ES underwent surgical or endoscopic treatment. Associated gastric strictures and pharyngeal strictures were present in 39 (60%) and 22 patients (28.9%), respectively. The mean age was 28.8 years and mean BMI was 14.2 kg/m2. Acid was the most common corrosive substance. Endoscopic dilatation using Savary-Gilliard (SG) dilators was successful in achieving persistent symptom relief in 46 patients (71.8%) after a total of 358 sessions (mean number of dilatations were 5.2 ± 1.2) of dilatations over 2 years. The dilatation therapy failed in 18 patients (28.1%) including technical failures (15.6%), perforations (3.1%), refractory stricture (1.5%) and recurrent strictures (7.8%). Increasing stricture length (more than 6 cm) was associated with poor outcome of endoscopic dilatation (p < 0.001). Only eleven patients (17%) required esophageal replacement (resection: 0, bypass: 11) for failed dilatations including seven gastric pull-ups and four pharyngo-coloplasty. The stricture rate after surgery was 36.3% (4/11). The median follows up was 32 months. Endoscopic dilatation of corrosive ES is safe and effective therapy and should be the first-line therapy for these patients and surgery should be considered only in patients who have unsuccessful outcome following dilatation therapy.

RESUMEN

In vivo detection of oral precancer has been carried out by a fluorescence-based, in-house-developed handheld probe on three groups: oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), dysplastic (precancer), and control (normal). Measurements have been performed on a total of 141 patients and volunteers of different age groups. Excitation wavelength of 405 nm was used and fluorescence emission spectra were recorded in the scan range of 450.14 to 763.41 nm at very low incident power (122 µW) from different oral sites buccal mucosa (BM), lateral boarder of tongue (LBT), and dorsal surface of tongue (DST). Spectral profiles are found to vary among the three groups as well as among the different oral sites. Major and minor bands of flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and porphyrins near 500, 634, 676, 689, and 703 nm have been obtained. Porphyrin contribution is found to be more dominant than the FAD in OSCC and dysplastic groups as compared to the control group. A better classification has been observed using the entire spectral range rather than restricting to individual bands, by application of principal component analysis (PCA), Mahalanobis distance model, and receiver operating characteristic analysis (ROC). ROC on Mahalanobis distance differentiates OSCC to normal, dysplastic to normal, and OSCC to dysplastic with sensitivities from 71% to 98%, 92% to 94% and 81% to 93% and specificities 91% to 100%, 86% to 100% and 79% to 97% for oral sites BM, LBT and DST. LBT and DST appear to be more sensitive to dysplasia detection as compared to BM.

BACKGROUND: The nitric oxide (NO)-producing activity of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) plays a significant role in maintaining endothelial function and protecting against the stroke injury. However, the activity of the eNOS enzyme and the metabolism of major NO metabolite S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) are dysregulated after stroke, causing endothelial dysfunction. We investigated whether an administration of exogenous of GSNO or enhancing the level of endogenous GSNO protects against neurovascular injury in wild-type (WT) and eNOS-null (endothelial dysfunction) mouse models of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (IR). METHODS: Transient cerebral ischemic injury was induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) for 60 minutes in male adult WT and eNOS null mice. GSNO (0.1 mg/kg body weight, intravenously) or N6022 (GSNO reductase inhibitor, 5.0 mg/kg body weight, intravenously) was administered 30 minutes before MCAO in preinjury and at the reperfusion in postinjury studies. Brain infarctions, edema, and neurobehavioral functions were evaluated at 24 hours after the reperfusion. RESULTS: eNOS-null mice had a higher degree (P< .05) of injury than WT. Pre- or postinjury treatment with either GSNO or N6022 significantly reduced infarct volume, improved neurological and sensorimotor function in both WT and eNOS-null mice. CONCLUSION: Reduced brain infarctions and edema, and improved neurobehavioral functions by pre- or postinjury GSNO treatment of eNOS knock out mice indicate that GSNO can attenuate IR injury, likely by mimicking the eNOS-derived NO-dependent anti-ischemic and anti-inflammatory functions. Neurovascular protection by GSNO/N6022 in both pre- and postischemic injury groups support GSNO as a promising drug candidate for the prevention and treatment of stroke injury.

Forests are the potential source for managing carbon sequestration, regulating climate variations and balancing universal carbon equilibrium between sources and sinks. Further, assessment of biomass, carbon stock, and its spatial distribution is prerequisite for monitoring the health of forest ecosystem. Moreover, vegetation field inventories are valuable source of data for estimating aboveground biomass (AGB), density, and the carbon stored in biomass of forest vegetation. In view of the importance of biomass, the present study makes an attempt to estimate temporal AGB of Tripura State, India, using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), leaf area index (LAI) and the field inventory data through geospatial techniques. A model was developed for establishing the relationship between biomass, LAI, and NDVI in the selected study site. The study also aimed to improve method for quantifying and verifying inventory-based biomass stock estimation. The results demonstrate the correlation value obtained between LAI and NDVI were 0.87 and 0.53 for the years 2011 and 2014, respectively. The correlation value between estimated AGB with LAI were found as 0.66 and 0.69, while with NDVI, the values were obtained as 0.64 and 0.94 for the years 2011 and 2014, respectively. The regression model of measured biomass with MODIS NDVI and LAI was developed for the data obtained during the period 2011-2014. The developed model was used to estimate the spatial distribution of biomass and its relationship between LAI and NDVI. The R2 values obtained were 0.832 for estimated and the measured AGB during the training and 0.826 for the validation. The results indicate that the methodology adopted in this study can help in selecting best fit model for analyzing relationship between AGB and NDVI/LAI and for estimating biomass using allometric equation at various spatial scales. The developed output thematic map showed an average biomass distribution of 32-94 Mg ha-1. The highest biomass values (72-95 Mg ha -1) was confined to the dense region of the forest while the lowest biomass values (32-46 Mg ha-1) was identified in the outer regions of the study site.

The present study optimized the extraction protocol conditions to obtain the antioxidant-rich bioactive extracts from Carica papaya L. (Papaya) leaves. A Box and Behnken Design (BBD) consisting of three different extracting variables viz. extracting temperature (60-70 °C), time (10-20 min) and solvent concentration (55-65%) was used. Antioxidant efficacy was recorded by evaluating four responses viz. ABTS, DPPH, SASA and total phenolic contents. The optimized model predicted, solvent concentration of 60% with extraction time of 15 min and extracting temperature of 65 °C with bioactive-rich antioxidants having highest total phenolic activity. The efficacy of obtained bioactive-rich papaya leaves extracts (PLE) were subjected for in-vivo evaluation in chevon emulsion added with the level of T-1 (0.10%); T-2 (0.25%); T-3 (0.50%) and control (without extract) stored under refrigeration (4 ± 1 °C) for 9 days by evaluating various physicochemical, microbiological, sensory quality characteristics. The pH was significantly higher for control than all treatments and water activity (aw) showed decreasing trend throughout storage period. Oxidation efficiency values showed an increasing drift during storage period, irrespective of added level of PLE, showing lowest oxidation in samples treated with 0.5% PLE. Sensory panellists awarded comparatively higher scores to all PLE treatments than control. Microbiological quality of emulsion incorporated with different levels of papaya leaves extract successfully improved and was lower in 0.5% PLE treated samples. It was concluded that extraction of bioactive antioxidants from Carica papaya L. leaves improved by optimising extraction parameters using RSM. Carica papaya L. leaves extracts have proven prospects as natural anti-oxidants in chevon emulsion as a meat emulsion system.

We report here a study on human saliva tested as a diagnostic medium for oral cancer detection on three groups: oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), oral sub mucous fibrosis (OSMF; precancer), and healthy controls (normal). Measurements have been conducted using fluorescence spectroscopy with 350 nm excitation and Stokes shift (SS) spectroscopy (SSS) with 120 nm shift from a total of 99 saliva samples. For classification, principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) have been applied on the data sets. Linear discriminant (LD) scores of fluorescence spectra are able to differentiate OSCC to normal, OSMF to normal and OSCC to OSMF with sensitivities 91%, 92%, 91% and specificities 97%, 100%, 94% respectively, while LD scores of SS spectra differentiate respective groups with sensitivities 100%, 94%, 94% and specificities 97%, 100%, 94%. Cross-validation on the datasets of PC scores during LDA illustrates that sensitivity and specificity of SSS data are less affected than those of fluorescence data. Saliva is thus seen as a potential non-invasive and simple diagnostic medium, with SS spectroscopy as a better diagnostic tool for oral precancer.

Changes in the pattern of electric power consumption in India have influenced energy utilization processes and socio-economic development to greater extent during the last few decades. Assessment of spatial distribution of electricity consumption is, thus, essential for projecting availability of energy resource and planning its infrastructure. This paper makes an attempt to model the future electricity demand for sustainable energy and its management in India. The nighttime light database provides a good approximation of availability of energy. We utilized defense meteorological satellite program-operational line-scan system (DMSP-OLS) nighttime satellite data, electricity consumption (1993-2013), gross domestic product (GDP) and population growth to construct the model. We also attempted to examine the sensitiveness of electricity consumption to GDP and population growth. The results revealed that the calibrated DMSP and model has provided realistic information on the electric demand with respect to GDP and population, with a better accuracy of r 2 = 0.91. The electric demand was found to be more sensitive to GDP (r = 0.96) than population growth (r = 0.76) as envisaged through correlation analysis. Hence, the model proved to be useful tool in predicting electric demand for its sustainable use and management.
