RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: The association of a broad spectrum of infectious diseases with cardiovascular outcomes remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: We aim to provide the cardiovascular risk profiles associated with a wide range of infectious diseases and explore the extent to which infections reduce life expectancy. METHODS: We ascertained exposure to 900+ infectious diseases before cardiovascular disease (CVD) onset in 453,102 participants from the UK Biobank study. Time-varying Cox proportional hazard models were used. Life table was used to estimate the life expectancy of individuals aged ≥50 with different levels of infection burden (defined as the number of infection episodes over time and the number of co-occurring infections). RESULTS: Infectious diseases were associated with a greater risk of CVD events (adjusted HR [aHR] 1.79 [95% confidence interval {CI} 1.74-1.83]). For type-specific analysis, bacterial infection with sepsis had the strongest risk of CVD events [aHR 4.76 (4.35-5.20)]. For site-specific analysis, heart and circulation infections posed the greatest risk of CVD events [aHR 4.95 (95% CI 3.77-6.50)], whereas noncardiac infections also showed excess risk [1.77 (1.72-1.81)]. Synergistic interactions were observed between infections and genetic risk score. A dose-response relationship was found between infection burden and CVD risks (p-trend <0.001). Infection burden >1 led to a CVD-related life loss at age 50 by 9.3 years [95% CI 8.6-10.3]) for men and 6.6 years [5.5-7.8] for women. CONCLUSIONS: The magnitude of the infection-CVD association showed specificity in sex, pathogen type, infection burden, and infection site. High genetic risk and infection synergistically increased the CVD risk.

This project was undertaken to develop the first set of consensus statements regarding the management of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) in Hong Kong, with the goal of providing guidance to local clinicians. A multidisciplinary panel of experts discussed issues surrounding current PDAC management and reviewed evidence gathered in the local context to propose treatment recommendations. The experts used the Delphi approach to finalise management recommendations. Consensus was defined as ≥80% acceptance among all expert panel members. Thirty-nine consensus statements were established. These statements cover all aspects of PDAC management, including diagnosis, resectability criteria, treatment modalities according to resectability, personalised management based on molecular profiling, palliative care, and supportive care. This project fulfils the need for guidance regarding PDAC management in Hong Kong. To assist clinicians with treatment decisions based on varying levels of evidence and clinical experience, treatment options are listed in several consensus statements.
RESUMEN
Quantum dots (QDs) have attracted a lot of attention over the past decades due to their sharp emission spectrum and color, which can be tuned by changing just the particle size and chromophoric stability. All these advantages of QDs make quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) promising candidates for display and light-source applications. This paper demonstrates a large-emitting-area QLED fabricated by a full-solution process. This QLED is composed of indium tin oxide (ITO) as the anode, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) as the hole injection layer (HIL), and poly(N,N'-bis-4-butylphenyl-N,N'-bisphenyl)benzidine (poly-TPD) as the hole-transport layer (HTL). The light-emitting layer (EML) is composed of green CdSe/ZnS quantum dots. By applying the ZnO nanoparticles as the electron-injection/transport layer, QLED devices are prepared under a full-solution process. The large-emitting-area QLED exhibits a low turn-on voltage of around 2~3 V, and the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) 1931 coordinate value of the emission spectrum was (0.31, 0.66). The large emitting area and the unique QLED structure of the device make it possible to apply these features to inkjet printing quantum dot light sources and quantum dot display applications.
RESUMEN
Both weight gain and weight loss in type 2 diabetic population were associated with increased risk of hip fracture, while maintaining weight lowered the risk of hip fracture. Regarding the risk of hip fracture, we can propose active monitoring to maintain the weight of type 2 diabetes patients. INTRODUCTION: In type 2 diabetes, patients are often asked to control their weight in order to reduce their diabetic morbidity. The American Diabetes Association recommends that diabetic patients conduct high-intensity interventions for regulating diet, physical activity, and behavior to reduce weight, followed by long-term comprehensive weight maintenance programs. Although such weight control attempts are required in diabetic patients, there are few studies on the effect of weight change on hip fracture in this population. We aim to investigate the association between body weight change and the incidence of hip fracture in subjects with type 2 diabetes using large-scale, nationwide cohort data on the Korean population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1,447,579 subjects (894,204 men and 553,375 women) > 40 years of age, who were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, were enrolled in this study. Weight change within 2 years was divided into five categories: from weight loss ≥ 10% to weight gain ≥ 10%. The hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals for the incidence of hip fracture were analyzed, compared with the reference of the stable weight group (weight change < 5%). RESULTS: Among 5 weight change groups, more than 10% weight loss showed the highest HR (HR, 1.605; 95% CI, 1.493 to 1.725), followed by more than 10% weight gain (HR, 1.457; 95% CI, 1.318 to 1.612). The effect of weight change on hip fracture risk was greater in males than in females, and those under 65 years of age were greater than those over 65 years of age. Baseline BMI did not play a role of weight change affecting the risk of hip fracture. The HR for hip fracture of subjects with regular exercise was lower than those without regular exercise. CONCLUSIONS: In the type 2 diabetes population, both weight gain and weight loss were significantly associated with a higher risk of hip fracture, whereas maintaining body weight reduced the risk of hip fracture the most.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The association between vitamin D levels and disease activity has been established in patients with several autoimmune rheumatic diseases. We aimed to examine the association between vitamin D and disease activity of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV). METHODS: Fifty-four AAV patients and 50 age- and sex-matched healthy controls without vitamin D supplements were included. Clinical and laboratory data were evaluated during the assessment of vitamin D levels. Two different forms of vitamin D in the sera-25(OH)D, which is the sum of 25(OH)D2 and 25(OH)D3, and 25(OH)D3, which only includes 25(OH)D in its D3 form-were measured, and the relationship between vitamin D and the obtained data was assessed. Variations in vitamin D levels relative to the season were also evaluated. RESULTS: Patients with AAV demonstrated considerably lower 25(OH)D serum levels than healthy controls (16.0 vs. 20.4â¯ng/mL, pâ¯= 0.016), and the proportion of individuals with vitamin D deficiency was higher in patients with AAV than in healthy controls (68.5% vs. 48.0%, pâ¯= 0.035). Both serum 25(OH)D and 25(OH)D3 were positively associated with the 36-item Short-form Health Survey (SF-36) physical component summary and SF-36 mental component summary (MCS) scores. A negative correlation was observed between 25(OH)D and 25(OH)D3 serum levels and Birmingham vasculitis activity score (BVAS), Creactive protein (CRP), and white blood cell count. Linear regression analysis indicated haemoglobin and 25(OH)D levels to be independently associated with BVAS and CRP and 25(OH)D levels with SF-36 MCS score. No seasonal variations were observed in vitamin D levels. CONCLUSION: The results from this study suggest that vitamin D levels could provide clinically useful information in AAV.

BACKGROUND: Gender differences in the thrombotic and bleeding risk have been suggested to condition the benefits of antithrombotic therapies in Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) patients, and mainly among those undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions with drug eluting stents (DES). The impact of gender on the optimal duration of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) in ACS patients is still unexplored and was, therefore, the aim of the present sub-study. METHODS: REDUCE was a prospective, multicenter, randomized investigator-initiated study designed to enroll 1500 ACS patients after treatment with the COMBO Dual Stent Therapy, based on a noninferiority design. Patients were randomized in a 1:1 fashion to either 3 or 12 months of DAPT. Primary study endpoint was a composite of all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, definite/probable stent thrombosis (ST), stroke, target-vessel revascularization (TVR) and bleedings (BARC II, III, V) at 12 months. Secondary endpoints were cardiovascular mortality and the individual components of the primary endpoint within 24 months. RESULTS: From June 2014 to May 2016 300 women and 1196 men were included in the study. Among them, 43.7% of females and 51.9% of males were assigned to the 3 months DAPT treatment. Baseline characteristics were well matched between the two arms, with the exception of a lower rate of TIMI flow < 3 (p = 0.04), lower systolic blood pressure (p = 0.05) and use of spironolactone (p = 0.006) among women and a more advanced age (p = 0.05) among men receiving a short-term DAPT. At a mean follow-up of 525 (± 198) days, no difference in the primary endpoint was observed according to DAPT duration in both females [6.9% vs 5.9%, HR (95% CI) = 1.19 (0.48-2.9), p = 0.71] and males [8.2% vs 9%, HR (95% CI) = 0.92 (0.63-1.35), p = 0.67; p INT = 0.20]. Results were confirmed after correction for baseline differences [females: adjusted HR (95% CI) = 1.12 (0.45-2.78), p = 0.81; males: adjusted HR (95% CI) = 0.90 (0.61-1.32), p = 0.60]. Comparable rates of survival, thrombotic (MI, stent thrombosis, TVR, stroke) and bleeding events were observed with the two DAPT strategies, with no impact of gender. CONCLUSIONS: The present study shows that among ACS patients randomized in the REDUCE trial, a 3 months DAPT strategy offers comparable results as compared to a standard 12 months DAPT at 2-years follow-up in both male and female gender.

INTRODUCTION: Community face mask use during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has considerably differed worldwide. Generally, Asians are more inclined to wear face masks during disease outbreaks. Hong Kong has emerged relatively unscathed during the initial outbreak of COVID-19, despite its dense population. Previous infectious disease outbreaks influenced the local masking behaviour and response to public health measures. Thus, local behavioural insights are important for the successful implementation of infection control measures. This study explored the behaviour and attitudes of wearing face masks in the community during the initial spread of COVID-19 in Hong Kong. METHODS: We observed the masking behaviour of 10 211 pedestrians in several regions across Hong Kong from 1 to 29 February 2020. We supplemented the data with an online survey of 3199 respondents' views on face mask use. RESULTS: Among pedestrians, the masking rate was 94.8%; 83.7% wore disposable surgical masks. However, 13.0% wore surgical masks incorrectly with 42.5% worn too low, exposing the nostrils or mouth; 35.5% worn 'inside-out' or 'upside-down'. Most online respondents believed in the efficacy of wearing face mask for protection (94.6%) and prevention of community spread (96.6%). Surprisingly, 78.9% reused their mask; more respondents obtained information from social media (65.9%) than from government websites (23.2%). CONCLUSIONS: In Hong Kong, members of the population are motivated to wear masks and believe in the effectiveness of face masks against disease spread. However, a high mask reuse rate and errors in masking techniques were observed. Information on government websites should be enhanced and their accessibility should be improved.

The aim of this study was to characterize chicken skin gelatin/tapioca starch composite films with varying concentrations (0-5%) of zinc oxide nanoparticles using the casting technique. The incorporation of 5% zinc oxide nanoparticles increased the water vapor permeation (1.52-1.93 × 10-7 gmm/cm2hPa) and melting temperature of the films. The tensile strength (22.96-50.43 MPa) was increased, while elongation at break decreased with increasing concentrations of zinc oxide nanoparticles. The structures of the films were also investigated via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The inhibitory zones for both the gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) (16-20 mm) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) (15-20 mm) bacteria were larger in the film with 5% zinc oxide. Overall, chicken skin gelatin-tapioca starch composite films with 3% zinc oxide nanoparticles were found to have the optimal formulation, demonstrating good physical, mechanical and antibacterial properties. Gelatin-based composite films with nanoparticle incorporation show strong potential for use in biodegradable food packaging materials.
RESUMEN
AIM: To summarize and evaluate the existing evidence on the effectiveness of distal technology with regard to multiple health outcomes in people with diabetes. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews from database inception to 31 August 2018 for systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses of studies that examined the impact of distal technology and reported any clinical or patient-related outcomes among people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. RESULTS: The umbrella review identified 95 reviews, including 162 meta-analyses with 46 unique outcomes. Evidence from meta-analyses of randomized controlled studies supports the use of distal technology, especially telehealth and mHealth (healthcare delivered by mobile technology), in people with diabetes for improving HbA1c values by 2-4 mmol/mol (0.2-0.4%). For other health outcomes, such as changes in fasting plasma glucose levels, risk of diabetic ketoacidosis or frequency of severe hypoglycaemia, the evidence was weaker. No evidence was reported for most patient-reported outcomes including quality of life, self-efficacy and medication-taking. The evidence base was poor, with most studies rated as low to very low quality. CONCLUSION: Distal technologies were associated with a modest improvement in glycaemic control, but it was unclear if they improved major clinical outcomes or were cost-effective in people with diabetes. More robust research to improve wider outcomes in people with diabetes is needed before such technologies can be recommended as part of routine care for any patient group.

Sorafenib (SOR) is an important multikinase inhibitor for the treatment of cancers. It is commercially available (Nexavar from Bayer) in the form of sorafenib tosylate (SORt) due to its very low solubility. Studies have been made to further improve the dissolution behavior of the tosylate form (SORt), which could ultimately moderate the currently high daily dose. In the present study, SORt nanoparticles (SORt-NP) were prepared through a process that combined two industrially well-accepted techniques of co-milling and supercritical extraction. SORt was co-milled with hydrophilic polymers and tetradecanol, and the tetradecanol was post-extracted using supercritical carbon dioxide. The process enabled the formation of SORt-NP without using any toxic organic solvents, and the drug/excipient ratio (1:0.38) was substantially higher than determined in other studies (1:5.4-10). The enhanced dissolution behavior of SORt-NP was possible with an optimized number of milling cycles. Combining co-milling and supercritical extraction was able to form overall porous network structures with reduced crystallite size, which accelerated the dissolution of SORt-NP. The current method could be easily extended to other poorly soluble drugs as a general approach to improve their dissolution behaviors.

AIMS: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, with a steadily increasing prevalence. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have been widely used in the food industry and are an attractive option for preventing and treating allergic skin diseases. We previously isolated new LABs including Lactococcus lactis KR-050L from Gajuknamu kimchi, and showed the anti-inflammatory effects of extract of L. lactis KR-050L culture broth (LLK). In this study, we investigated the effects of LLK on AD. METHODS AND RESULTS: For the in vitro study, we used human keratinocytes (HaCaT) and mast cells (RBL-2H3). In vivo study, we investigated the effects of LLK on Dermatophagoides farinae extract (DFE) and 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced atopic skin inflammation in mice. LLK suppressed expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines by down-regulation of p38 MAPK, STAT1 and nuclear translocation of NF-κB in keratinocytes. Topical application of LLK suppressed AD symptoms based on reduction in ear thickness, serum IgE levels and immune cell infiltration. Furthermore, LLK inhibited serum histamine levels and mast cells infiltration in vivo, and reduced mast cells activation in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that LLK inhibits AD symptoms through inhibition of keratinocytes and mast cells activation. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: LLK is a potential therapeutic candidate for AD treatment.

AIM: To investigate the diagnostic performance of 18F-fluciclovine positron-emission tomography (PET) or combined PET and computed tomography (PET/CT) for diagnosis of primary cancer, preoperative lymph node (LN) staging, and detection of recurrent disease of prostate cancer (PCa) through a systematic review and meta-analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PubMed and EMBASE databases were searched from the earliest available date of indexing through 31 December 2018, for studies evaluating the diagnostic performance of 18F-fluciclovine PET or PET/CT for the management of PCa patients. The sensitivities, specificities, and positive and negative likelihood ratios (LR+ and LR-) across the studies were calculated and summary receiver operating characteristic curves were constructed. RESULTS: Across 13 studies (563 patients), the pooled sensitivity for 18F-fluciclovine PET or PET/CT for diagnosis of primary PCa was 0.87 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.77-0.93) and a pooled specificity of 0.84 (95% CI: 0.68-0.93). For LN staging, the pooled sensitivity was 0.56 (95% CI: 0.37-0.74) and a pooled specificity of 0.98 (95% CI: 0.88-1.00). For detection of recurrent disease, the pooled sensitivity was 0.79 (95% CI: 0.60-0.91) and a pooled specificity of 0.69 (95% CI: 0.59-0.77). In meta-regression analysis, no definite variable was the source of the study heterogeneity. CONCLUSION: The current meta-analysis showed the moderate sensitivity and specificity of 18F-fluciclovine PET or PET/CT for the diagnosis of primary cancer, preoperative LN staging, and detection of recurrent PCa. Further large multicentre studies will be necessary to substantiate the diagnostic accuracy of 18F-fluciclovine PET/CT for management of PCa patients.

Patients with chronic hepatitis C who achieve a sustained viral response after pegylated interferon therapy have a reduced risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, but the risk after treatment with direct-acting antivirals is unclear. We compared the rates of early development of hepatocellular carcinoma after direct-acting antivirals and after pegylated interferon therapy. We retrospectively analysed 785 patients with chronic hepatitis C who had no history of hepatocellular carcinoma (211 treated with pegylated interferon, 574 with direct-acting antivirals) and were followed up for at least 24 weeks after antiviral treatment. De novo hepatocellular carcinoma developed in 6 of 574 patients receiving direct-acting antivirals and in 1 of 211 patients receiving pegylated interferon. The cumulative incidence of early hepatocellular carcinoma development did not differ between the treatment groups either for the whole cohort (1.05% vs 0.47%, P = .298) or for those patients with Child-Pugh Class A cirrhosis (3.73% vs 2.94%, P = .827). Multivariate analysis indicated that alpha-fetoprotein level >9.5 ng/mL at the time of end-of-treatment response was the only independent risk factor for early development of hepatocellular carcinoma in all patients (P < .0001, hazard ratio 176.174, 95% confidence interval 10.768-2882.473) and in patients treated with direct-acting agents (P < .0001, hazard ratio 128.402, 95% confidence interval 8.417-1958.680). In conclusion, the rate of early development of hepatocellular carcinoma did not differ between patients treated with pegylated interferon and those treated with direct-acting antivirals and was associated with the serum alpha-fetoprotein level at the time of end-of-treatment response.

We demonstrated a method to obtain super flexible LEDs, based on high quality pyramid arrays grown directly on sapphire substrates. Laser lift-off (LLO) and dual transfer processes were applied to transfer pyramid arrays face up onto the flexible substrates, which is more efficient than back light emission. Ag grid and Ag nanowires were employed as the electrical connection. No significant performance reduction appeared until the device reached a curvature radius of 0.5 mm. The performance reduction results from cracks appearing at the junction of the Ag grid, which can be improved by replacing the Ag grid with a strip electrode.
RESUMEN
The prognostic nutritional index (PNI), which is calculated using serum albumin level and total lymphocyte count in the peripheral blood, is regarded as an index that reflects the immunonutritional status of patients. PNI was calculated in 217 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients according to the following formula: 10 × serum albumin value (g/dL) + 0.005 × peripheral lymphocyte count (/mm3). Pearson's correlation analysis was used to elucidate the correlation between continuous variables. Linear and logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the correlation between laboratory variables and SLE Disease Activity Index-2000 (SLEDAI-2 K) and to differentiate between active and inactive SLE. Ninety-three patients were classified as active SLE (SLEDAI-2 K ≥ 5) and 124 as inactive SLE. Patients with active SLE exhibited lower median PNI than those with inactive SLE (39.0 vs. 49.1, p < 0.001). Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed PNI as an independent predictor of active SLE. Multivariable linear regression analysis revealed that PNI was significantly correlated with laboratory variables of SLEDAI-2 K, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein and SLEDAI-2 K. Furthermore, in patients who switched from active to inactive SLE after treatment ( n = 55), PNI increased as disease activity improved ( p < 0.001), which suggests that PNI may be useful for estimating SLE activity.

We investigated renal outcome of kidney-transplantation in 19 Korean recipients with biopsy-proven lupus nephritis and compared it with 18 Korean age- and gender-matched recipients without lupus nephritis who were diagnosed with end-stage renal disease caused by renal diseases other than lupus nephritis in a single centre. We reviewed histological findings of kidneys and calculated cumulative dose of immunosuppressive agents. We assessed renal flare of systemic lupus erythematosus, recurrence of lupus nephritis and graft failure as prognosis. The mean age of recipients with lupus nephritis was 43.5 years and all patients were female. Six patients had class III, 10 had class IV and three had class V. There were no meaningful differences in demographic data, renal replacement modality, cumulative doses of immunosuppressants and prognosis between recipients with and without lupus nephritis. Eight patients experienced renal flare of systemic lupus erythematosus, but there were no cases of recurrence of lupus nephritis or graft failure in recipients with lupus nephritis. Kidney-recipients with class IV lupus nephritis exhibited a lower cumulative renal flare of systemic lupus erythematosus free survival rate than those with class III lupus nephritis. In conclusion, renal outcome of kidney-transplantation in patients with lupus nephritis is similar to that in those without lupus nephritis, and class IV was associated with renal flare of systemic lupus erythematosus.

Serum Mac-2-binding protein (M2BP) is elevated in various chronic inflammatory diseases, and evidence suggests that glycosylation of M2BP induces discrete biological effects. However, the role of serum M2BP in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is still unclear. Recently, a Wisteria floribunda agglutinin-positive-M2BP (WFA+-M2BP) immunoassay has shown promise in detecting highly glycosylated M2BP. In this study, by using WFA+-M2BP immunoassay, we measured serum M2BP in 203 SLE patients and evaluated its clinical significance. Eighty patients were classified as having active SLE and 123 patients as having inactive SLE. The median serum M2BP was higher in patients with active SLE than in those with inactive SLE (2.1 vs. 0.9, p < 0.001). In multivariate linear regression analysis, serum M2BP, anti-dsDNA, C3 and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were associated with SLEDAI-2K. Serum M2BP also strongly correlated with laboratory variables related to SLEDAI-2K, ESR and C-reactive protein. Furthermore, multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that serum M2BP was useful in predicting active SLE. Finally, following immunosuppressive treatment, elevated serum M2BP significantly decreased along with improvement in disease activity. These findings suggest that serum M2BP might contribute to the inflammatory process in SLE, and measuring serum M2BP might be a useful marker to assess SLE disease activity.

Nickel hydroxide ß-Ni(OH)2 hexagonal nanosheets were synthetized via a hydrothermal exfoliation process. The practical microwave-assisted hydrothermal method facilitated obtaining layered nickel 3D nanoplates with cerium functionalization in 5 h. The as-produced nanostructures were characterized by XRD, XPS, FESEM, FTIR, PL, UV-vis, and BET techniques. The hydroxilated structures are nano-thick hexagonal plates with sides 28 nm in length and an average thickness of 5 nm. UV and PL irradiation was used to study the photoactive properties in the degradation of a pharmaceutical emerging pollutant, naproxen. UV-vis spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography monitoring indicated that the Ni(OH)2-Ce nanostructures are an effective photocatalyst for naproxen degradation, including 40% mineralization of this highly recalcitrant drug. The photocatalyst showed stability for two consecutive cycles, preserving its photoactive and structural characteristics. Ce3+-doped nanoplates and surface functionalized Ce4+ act as charge separators and scavenging agents for the enhanced photodegradation of naproxen.
RESUMEN
AIM: To examine the properties of Schisandrin C as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compound, and whether its characteristics promote mitochondrial biogenesis in human dental pulp cells (HDPCs). METHODOLOGY: HDPCs were extracted from fresh third molars and cultured for experiments. Reactive oxidative stress (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) formation were analysed by a Muse cell analyser. Western blotting and gelatin zymography were used to identify the presence of antioxidants, as well as anti-inflammatory and mitochondrial biogenesis with specific antibody. An unpaired Student's t-test was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Schisandrin C inhibited lipopolysaccharide-stimulated inflammatory molecules; interleukin 1 beta, tumour necrosis factor alpha, intracellular adhesion molecule-1, vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9, NO production, ROS formation, nuclear factor kappa B translocation (P < 0.05) through the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway. Schisandrin C increased the expression of superoxide dismutase enzymes as well as haem oxygenase-1 and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha through the phosphorylated-protein kinase B (p-Akt) and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor-2 pathways (P < 0.05). The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of Schisandrin C promoted mitochondrial biogenesis. CONCLUSIONS: Schisandrin C has the potential to reduce inflammation and oxidation and to promote mitochondrial biogenesis. Therefore, Schisandrin C may be considered for use as an anti-inflammatory compound for oral inflammation through mitochondrial biogenesis.
