RESUMEN

Electronic flat-band materials host quantum states characterized by a quenched kinetic energy. These flat bands are often conducive to enhanced electron correlation effects and emergent quantum phases of matter1. Long studied in theoretical models2-4, these systems have received renewed interest after their experimental realization in van der Waals heterostructures5,6 and quasi-two-dimensional (2D) crystalline materials7,8. An outstanding experimental question is if such flat bands can be realized in three-dimensional (3D) networks, potentially enabling new materials platforms9,10 and phenomena11-13. Here we investigate the C15 Laves phase metal CaNi2, which contains a nickel pyrochlore lattice predicted at a model network level to host a doubly-degenerate, topological flat band arising from 3D destructive interference of electronic hopping14,15. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observe a band with vanishing dispersion across the full 3D Brillouin zone that we identify with the pyrochlore flat band as well as two additional flat bands that we show arise from multi-orbital interference of Ni d-electrons. Furthermore, we demonstrate chemical tuning of the flat-band manifold to the Fermi level that coincides with enhanced electronic correlations and the appearance of superconductivity. Extending the notion of intrinsic band flatness from 2D to 3D, this provides a potential pathway to correlated behaviour predicted for higher-dimensional flat-band systems ranging from tunable topological15 to fractionalized phases16.

With the development of synchronous videoconferencing technology, research on the professional practices of synchronous online teaching has been growing at an exponential rate. However, little is known about synchronous online teachers' use of motivational strategies, despite the important role of teachers in fostering student motivation. To address this gap, this mixed-methods study examined how synchronous online teachers utilized motivational strategies and explored the influence of the synchronous online environment on the use of motivational strategies. As an analytical framework, we drew on the need-supportive teaching principles of the self-determination theory, which present three types of motivational strategies: involvement, structure, and autonomy-support. The quantitative analysis of survey results collected from language teachers (N = 72) revealed the perception that autonomy-support and structure were relatively well suited to the online environment while involvement was difficult to implement. The qualitative analysis of follow-up interviews (N = 10) elucidated how the online environment influenced the teachers' use of each strategy while producing a new framework and specific strategy lists that may be applicable to synchronous online teaching. This study presents important theoretical implications regarding the application of self-determination theory in online education, while also providing practical implications for synchronous online teacher preparation and professional development.

Assessment of lymph node (LN) status in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is often troublesome because of cervical LNs with indeterminate US (ultrasound) features. We aimed to explore whether Superb Microvascular Imaging (SMI) could be helpful for distinguishing metastasis from indeterminate LNs when combined with power Doppler US (PDUS). From 353 consecutive patients with PTC, LNs characterized as indeterminate by PDUS were evaluated by SMI to distinguish them from metastasis. Indeterminate LNs were reclassified according to the SMI, the malignancy risk of each category was assessed, and the diagnostic performance of suspicious findings on SMI was calculated. The incidence of US-indeterminate LNs was 26.9%. Eighty PDUS-indeterminate LNs (39 proven as benign, 41 proven as malignant) were reclassified into probably benign (n = 26), indeterminate (n = 20), and suspicious (n = 34) categories according to SMI, with malignancy risks of 19.2%, 20.0%, and 94.1%, respectively. After combining SMI with PDUS, 80.8% (21/26) of probably benign LNs and 94.1% (32/34) of suspicious LNs could be correctly diagnosed as benign and metastatic, respectively. The diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of categorizing LNs as suspicious based on SMI were 78.1%, 94.9%, and 86.3%, respectively. In conclusion, the combination of SMI with PDUS was helpful for the accurate stratification of indeterminate LNs based on US in patients with PTC.
