RESUMEN

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is one of the most complex, dynamic and abundant sources of organic carbon, but its chemical reactivity remains uncertain1-3. Greater insights into DOM structural features could facilitate understanding its synthesis, turnover and processing in the global carbon cycle4,5. Here we use complementary multiplicity-edited 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra to quantify key substructures assembling the carbon skeletons of DOM from four main Amazon rivers and two mid-size Swedish boreal lakes. We find that one type of reaction mechanism, oxidative dearomatization (ODA), widely used in organic synthetic chemistry to create natural product scaffolds6-10, is probably a key driver for generating structural diversity during processing of DOM that are rich in suitable polyphenolic precursor molecules. Our data suggest a high abundance of tetrahedral quaternary carbons bound to one oxygen and three carbon atoms (OCqC3 units). These units are rare in common biomolecules but could be readily produced by ODA of lignin-derived and tannin-derived polyphenols. Tautomerization of (poly)phenols by ODA creates non-planar cyclohexadienones, which are subject to immediate and parallel cycloadditions. This combination leads to a proliferation of structural diversity of DOM compounds from early stages of DOM processing, with an increase in oxygenated aliphatic structures. Overall, we propose that ODA is a key reaction mechanism for complexity acceleration in the processing of DOM molecules, creation of new oxygenated aliphatic molecules and that it could be prevalent in nature.

MRE11 nuclease forms a trimeric complex (MRN) with RAD50 and NBS1 and plays a central role in preventing genomic instability. When DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) occur, MRN is quickly recruited to the damage site and initiates DNA end resection; accordingly, MRE11 must be tightly regulated to avoid inefficient repair or nonspecific resection. Here, we show that MRE11 and RAD50 form a complex (MRC) with C1QBP, which stabilizes MRE11/RAD50, while inhibiting MRE11 nuclease activity by preventing its binding to DNA or chromatin. Upon DNA damage, ATM phosphorylates MRE11-S676/S678 to quickly dissociate the MRC complex. Either excess or insufficient C1QBP impedes the recruitment of MRE11 to DSBs and impairs the DNA damage response. C1QBP is highly expressed in breast cancer and positively correlates with MRE11 expression, and the inhibition of C1QBP enhances tumor regression with chemotherapy. By influencing MRE11 at multiple levels, C1QBP is, thus, an important player in the DNA damage response.

Multiple facets of global change affect the earth system interactively, with complex consequences for ecosystem functioning and stability. Simultaneous climate and biodiversity change are of particular concern, because biodiversity may contribute to ecosystem resistance and resilience and may mitigate climate change impacts. Yet, the extent and generality of how climate and biodiversity change interact remain insufficiently understood, especially for the decomposition of organic matter, a major determinant of the biosphere-atmosphere carbon feedbacks. With an inter-biome field experiment using large rainfall exclusion facilities, we tested how drought, a common prediction of climate change models for many parts of the world, and biodiversity in the decomposer system drive decomposition in forest ecosystems interactively. Decomposing leaf litter lost less carbon (C) and especially nitrogen (N) in five different forest biomes following partial rainfall exclusion compared to conditions without rainfall exclusion. An increasing complexity of the decomposer community alleviated drought effects, with full compensation when large-bodied invertebrates were present. Leaf litter mixing increased diversity effects, with increasing litter species richness, which contributed to counteracting drought effects on C and N loss, although to a much smaller degree than decomposer community complexity. Our results show at a relevant spatial scale covering distinct climate zones that both, the diversity of decomposer communities and plant litter in forest floors have a strong potential to mitigate drought effects on C and N dynamics during decomposition. Preserving biodiversity at multiple trophic levels contributes to ecosystem resistance and appears critical to maintain ecosystem processes under ongoing climate change.

Dync1li1, a subunit of cytoplasmic dynein 1, is reported to play important roles in intracellular retrograde transport in many tissues. However, the roles of Dync1li1 in the mammalian cochlea remain uninvestigated. Here we first studied the expression pattern of Dync1li1 in the mouse cochlea and found that Dync1li1 is highly expressed in hair cells (HCs) in both neonatal and adult mice cochlea. Next, we used Dync1li1 knockout (KO) mice to investigate its effects on hearing and found that deletion of Dync1li1 leads to early onset of progressive HC loss via apoptosis and to subsequent hearing loss. Further studies revealed that loss of Dync1li1 destabilizes dynein and alters the normal function of dynein. In addition, Dync1li1 KO results in a thinner Golgi apparatus and the accumulation of LC3+ autophagic vacuoles, which triggers HC apoptosis. We also knocked down Dync1li1 in the OC1 cells and found that the number of autophagosomes were significantly increased while the number of autolysosomes were decreased, which suggested that Dync1li1 knockdown leads to impaired transportation of autophagosomes to lysosomes and therefore the accumulation of autophagosomes results in HC apoptosis. Our findings demonstrate that Dync1li1 plays important roles in HC survival through the regulation of autophagosome transportation.

Perovskite monocrystalline films are regarded as desirable candidates for the integration of high-performance optoelectronics due to their unique photophysical properties. However, the heterogeneous integration of a perovskite monocrystalline film with other semiconductors is fundamentally limited by the lattice mismatch, which hinders direct epitaxy. Herein, the van der Waals (vdW) integration strategy for 3D perovskites is developed, where perovskite monocrystalline films are epitaxially grown on the mother substrate, followed by its peeling off and transferring to arbitrary semiconductors, forming monocrystalline heterojunctions. The as-achieved CsPbBr3-Nb-doped SrTiO3 (Nb:STO) vdW p-n heterojunction exhibited comparable performance to their directly epitaxial counterpart, demonstrating the feasibility of vdW integration for 3D perovskites. Furthermore, the vdW integration could be extended to silicon substrates, rendering the CsPbBr3-n-Si and CsPbCl3-p-Si p-n heterojunction with apparent rectification behaviors and photoresponse. The vdW integration significantly enriches the selections of semiconductors hybridizing with perovskites and provides opportunities for monocrystalline perovskite optoelectronics with complex configurations and multiple functionalities.

Anti-angiogenesis is a promising therapeutic strategy for delaying tumour progression that offers, new hope for gastric cancer targeted therapy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the precise mechanism by which Kin of IRRE-like protein 1 (KIRREL) contributes to the development of gastric cancer, particularly in terms of tumour angiogenesis. Differential expression of KIRREL in tissues and cells was detected using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, western blotting and immunohistochemistry. A bioinformatics analysis was conducted to screen for the function and pathway enrichment of KIRREL in gastric cancer. Lentivirus-induced KIRREL silencing in SNU-5 cells and lentivirus-induced KIRREL overexpression in AGS cells were used to study the effect of KIRREL on the proliferation, cell cycle and angiogenesis of gastric cancer cells. Moreover, the expressions of PI3K, P-PI3K, AKT, P-AKT, mTOR, P-mTOR, HIF-1α and VEGF were also detected. Gastric cancer tissues and cells had high levels of KIRREL expression, which is associated with the proliferation, cell cycle and angiogenesis of gastric cancer cells. After silencing and overexpressing KIRREL in SNU-5 and AGS cells, respectively, the proliferation and angiogenesis of SNU-5 cells were inhibited, while the proliferation and angiogenesis of AGS cells were promoted. According to a bioinformatics analysis of the KIRREL gene, angiogenesis regulation and the PI3K/AKT pathway were highly connected. The PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway was repressed and stimulated by KIRREL silencing and overexpression, respectively. IGF-1, an AKT agonist, and LY294002, an inhibitor, reversed the effects of KIRREL silencing and overexpression on the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway and on gastric cancer cell proliferation and angiogenesis. KIRREL may mediate the proliferation and angiogenesis of gastric cancer cells through the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signalling pathway. These findings could help in the further development of potential anti-angiogenesis targets.

BACKGROUND: Kobreisa littledalei, belonging to the Cyperaceae family is the first Kobresia species with a reference genome and the most dominant species in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau alpine meadows. It has several resistance genes which could be used to breed improved crop varieties. Reverse Transcription Quantitative Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-qPCR) is a popular and accurate gene expression analysis method. Its reliability depends on the expression levels of reference genes, which vary by species, tissues and environments. However, K.littledalei lacks a stable and normalized reference gene for RT-qPCR analysis. RESULTS: The stability of 13 potential reference genes was tested and the stable reference genes were selected for RT-qPCR normalization for the expression analysis in the different tissues of K. littledalei under two abiotic stresses (salt and drought) and two hormonal treatments (abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellin (GA)). Five algorithms were used to assess the stability of putative reference genes. The results showed a variation amongst the methods, and the same reference genes showed tissue expression differences under the same conditions. The stability of combining two reference genes was better than a single one. The expression levels of ACTIN were stable in leaves and stems under normal conditions, in leaves under drought stress and in roots under ABA treatment. The expression of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) expression was stable in the roots under the control conditions and salt stress and in stems exposed to drought stress. Expression levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) were stable in stems of ABA-treated plants and in the roots under drought stress. Moreover, RPL6 expression was stable in the leaves and stems under salt stress and in the stems of the GA-treated plants. EF1-alpha expression was stable in leaves under ABA and GA treatments. The expression levels of 28 S were stable in the roots under GA treatment. In general, ACTIN and GAPDH could be employed as housekeeping genes for K. littledalei under different treatments. CONCLUSION: This study identified the best RT-qPCR reference genes for different K. littledalei tissues under five experimental conditions. ACTIN and GAPDH genes can be employed as the ideal housekeeping genes for expression analysis under different conditions. This is the first study to investigate the stable reference genes for normalized gene expression analysis of K. littledalei under different conditions. The results could aid molecular biology and gene function research on Kobresia and other related species.

Hosts hold great prospects for addressing the dendrite growth and volume expansion of the Li metal anode, but Li dendrites are still observable under the conditions of high deposition capacity and/or high current density. Herein, a nitrogen-doped graphene mesh (NGM) is developed, which possesses a conductive and lithiophilic scaffold for efficient Li deposition. The abundant nanopores in NGM can not only provide sufficient room for Li deposition, but also speed up Li ion transport to achieve a high-rate capability. Moreover, the evenly distributed N dopants on the NGM can guide the uniform nucleation of Li so that to inhibit dendrite growth. As a result, the composite NGM@Li anode shows satisfactory electrochemical performances for Li-S batteries, including a high capacity of 600 mAh g-1 after 300 cycles at 1 C and a rate capacity of 438 mAh g-1 at 3 C. This work provides a new avenue for the fabrication of graphene-based hosts with large areal capacity and high-rate capability for Li metal batteries.

Leaf morphogenesis involves cell division, expansion, and differentiation in the developing leaf, which take place at different rates and at different positions along the medio-lateral and proximal-distal leaf axes. The gene expression changes that control cell fate along these axes remain elusive due to difficulties in precisely isolating tissues. Here, we combined rigorous early leaf characterization, laser capture microdissection, and transcriptomic sequencing to ask how gene expression patterns regulate early leaf morphogenesis in wild-type tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and the leaf morphogenesis mutant trifoliate. We observed transcriptional regulation of cell differentiation along the proximal-distal axis and identified molecular signatures delineating the classically defined marginal meristem/blastozone region during early leaf development. We describe the role of endoreduplication during leaf development, when and where leaf cells first achieve photosynthetic competency, and the regulation of auxin transport and signaling along the leaf axes. Knockout mutants of BLADE-ON-PETIOLE2 exhibited ectopic shoot apical meristem formation on leaves, highlighting the role of this gene in regulating margin tissue identity. We mapped gene expression signatures in specific leaf domains and evaluated the role of each domain in conferring indeterminacy and permitting blade outgrowth. Finally, we generated a global gene expression atlas of the early developing compound leaf.

Encapsulated cell technology (ECT) is a targeted delivery method that uses the genetically engineered cells in semipermeable polymer capsules to deliver cytokines. Thus far, ECT has been extensively utilized in pharmacologic research, and shows enormous potentials in the treatment of posterior segment diseases. Due to the biological barriers within the eyeball, it is difficult to attain effective therapeutic concentration in the posterior segment through topical administration of drug molecules. Encouragingly, therapeutic cytokines provided by ECT can cross these biological barriers and achieve sustained release at the desired location. The encapsulation system uses permeable materials that allow growth factors and cytokines to diffuse efficiently into retinal tissue. Moreover, the ECT based treatment can be terminated timely when we need to retrieve the implant, which makes the therapy reversible and provides a safer alternative for intraocular gene therapy. Meanwhile, we also place special emphasis on optimizing encapsulation materials and enhancing preservation techniques to achieve the stable release of growth factors and cytokines in the eyeball. This technology holds great promise for the treatment of patients with dry AMD, RP, glaucoma and MacTel. These findings would enrich our understandings of ECT and promote its future applications in treatment of degenerative retinopathy. This review comprises articles evaluating the exactness of artificial intelligence-based formulas published from 2000 to March 2024. The papers were identified by a literature search of various databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library and Web of Science).

The high prevalence of metabolic syndrome is threatening the health of populations all over the world. Contemporary work demonstrates that high leptin concentration is directly related to the development of metabolic syndrome such as obesity, fatty liver diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. Anthocyanins are a widespread group of dietary polyphenols, which can ameliorate chronic diseases related to metabolic syndrome. In addition, anthocyanins can regulate the leptin pathway in chronic metabolic diseases, however the potential mechanism between anthocyanin and leptin is complex and elusive. In this review paper, we have evaluated the bioactivity of anthocyanins on the mediation of leptin level and the upstream and downstream pathways in chronic metabolic diseases. Anthocyanins could regulate the hypertrophy of adipose tissue, and the expression of leptin level via mediating TNF-α, C/EBP, PPAR, CREB and SREBP-1. Anthocyanins promoted the leptin sensitivity by increasing the level of leptin receptor, phosphorylation of JAK2/STAT3, PI3K/AKT, and additionally ameliorated metabolic disorder related outcome, including oxidative stress, inflammation, lipid accumulation, insulin resistance and the balance of gut microbiota. However, direct evidence of anthocyanins treatment on leptin signal transduction is still limited which calls for future molecular binding and gene regulation test.

OBJECTIVE: There is an urgent need for novel biomarkers that are inexpensive, effective and easily accessible to complement the early diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between serum gamma-glutamate-transpeptidase to platelet ratio, alkaline phosphatase-to-platelet ratio index, fibrosis index based on four factors and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, and to determine the optimal cut-offs for predicting hepatocellular carcinoma. METHODS: Based on a prospective cohort study, 44 215 participants who were cancer-free at baseline (2011-13) were included in the study. Cox proportional hazard models and receiver operating characteristics curves were used to analyze the diagnostic value and optimal cut-off value of gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase to platelet ratio, alkaline phosphatase-to-platelet ratio index and fibrosis index based on four factors in predicting hepatocellular carcinoma patients. RESULTS: Gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase to platelet ratio, alkaline phosphatase-to-platelet ratio index and fibrosis index based on four factors can be used as early independent predictors of hepatocellular carcinoma risk. The risk of hepatocellular carcinoma in the fourth quantile of gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase to platelet ratio and alkaline phosphatase-to-platelet ratio index was 4.04 times (hazard ratio = 4.04, 95% confidence interval: 2.09, 7.80) and 2.59 times (hazard ratio = 2.59, 95% confidence interval: 1.45, 4.61), respectively, compared with the first quantile. With fibrosis index based on four factors first quantile as a reference, fibrosis index based on four factors fourth quantile had the highest risk (hazard ratio = 18.58, 95% confidence interval: 7.55, 45.72). Receiver operating characteristic results showed that fibrosis index based on four factors had a stronger ability to predict the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (area under curve = 0.81, 95% confidence interval: 0.80, 0.81), and similar results were shown for gender stratification. In the total population, the optimal cut-off values of gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase to platelet ratio, alkaline phosphatase-to-platelet ratio index and fibrosis index based on four factors were 0.208, 0.629 and 1.942, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase to platelet ratio, alkaline phosphatase-to-platelet ratio index and fibrosis index based on four factors were independent predictors of hepatocellular carcinoma risk. Amongst them, fibrosis index based on four factors shows a stronger predictive ability for hepatocellular carcinoma risk, and gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase to platelet ratio and alkaline phosphatase-to-platelet ratio index can be used as complementary indicators.

PURPOSE: To describe the health information-seeking experience and its influencing factors of people with head and neck neoplasms undergoing treatment. METHODS: This was a descriptive phenomenology study. Participants were recruited by purposive sampling. The semistructured interviews and all observation results were recorded. The data were analysed using Colaizzi's method. RESULTS: Fourteen participants were selected. We identified four themes that illustrate factors that influence the health information-seeking behaviour of participants: patients' awareness of health information needs, patients' competence, doctor-patient communication, and online advertising interference. We also determined the value of different types of information and patients' information needs and sources. CONCLUSION: These findings can help professionals understand patients' behaviours and think about how to deliver practical information support in a network environment to guide patients in continuous information seeking while taking specific factors into account.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) has attracted attention recently. AIMS: To analyze the influence of H. pylori infection and eradication on SIBO, IMO, and abdominal symptoms. METHODS: Patients with gastrointestinal symptoms were tested for 13C urea breath test and if positive, treated with bismuth-based quadruple therapy. Lactulose hydrogen methane breath test (HMBT) was performed and symptoms were assessed using gastrointestinal symptom rating scale (GSRS) before and 6 weeks after eradication. RESULTS: Of the 102 subjects, 53 were H. pylori positive. The prevalence of SIBO and IMO were higher in patients with H. pylori infection than in those without infection (49.1% vs 24.5%, P = 0.019 for SIBO; 24.5% vs 8.2%, P = 0.027 for IMO). GSRS scores were similar between H. pylori-infected and uninfected patients (2 (IQR: 1;3) vs 2 (IQR: 1;2), P = 0.211). Patients with SIBO or IMO presented higher GSRS scores than patients with both SIBO and IMO negative (2 (IQR: 2;3), 2 (IQR: 2;3) vs 2 (IQR: 1;2), P = 0.011, 0.001, respectively). For the 50 patients who successfully eradicated H. pylori, the response rates for SIBO and IMO were 66.7% and 76.9%, respectively. GSRS scores also significantly decreased (2 (IQR: 1;3) to 0 (IQR: 0;1), P < 0.001) after eradication. CONCLUSION: Helicobacter pylori infection was associated with higher prevalence of SIBO and IMO, both of which led to more pronounced abdominal symptoms. H. pylori eradication also achieved therapeutic effects on SIBO and IMO, accompanied by relief of abdominal symptoms.

The contents of organic acids (OAs) in tea beverage and their relationship with taste intensity have not been fully understood. In this work, a rapid (10 min for a single run) and sensitive (limits of quantification: 0.0044-0.4486 µg/mL) method was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of 17 OAs in four types of tea, based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry with multiple reaction monitoring mode. The contents of 17 OAs in 96 tea samples were measured at levels between 0.01 and 11.80 g/kg (dried weight). Quinic acid, citric acid, and malic acid were determined as the major OAs in green, black, and raw pu-erh teas, while oxalic acid and tartaric acid exhibited the highest contents in ripe pu-erh tea. Taking the OAs composition as input features, a partial least squares regression model was proposed to predict the sourness intensity of tea beverages. The model achieved a root-mean-square error of 0.58 and a coefficient of determination of 0.84 for the testing set. The proposed model provides a theoretical way to evaluate the sensory quality of tea infusion based on its chemical composition.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have revealed that metabolic disorders are closely related to the development of preeclampsia (PE). However, there is still a research gap on the causal role of metabolites in promoting or preventing PE. We aimed to systematically explore the causal association between circulating metabolites and PE. METHODS: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 486 blood metabolites (7,824 participants) were extracted as instrumental variables (P < 1 × 10- 5), GWAS summary statistics for PE were obtained from FinnGen consortium (7,212 cases and 194,266 controls) as outcome, and a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted. Inverse variance weighted (IVW) was set as the primary method, with MR-Egger and weighted median as auxiliary methods; the instrumental variable strength and confounding factors were also assessed. Sensitivity analyses including MR-Egger, Cochran's Q test, MR-PRESSO and leave-one-out analysis were performed to test the robustness of the MR results. For significant associations, repeated MR and meta-analysis were performed by another metabolite GWAS (8,299 participants). Furthermore, significantly associated metabolites were subjected to a metabolic pathway analysis. RESULTS: The instrumental variables for the metabolites ranged from 3 to 493. Primary analysis revealed a total of 12 known (e.g., phenol sulfate, citrulline, lactate and gamma-glutamylglutamine) and 11 unknown metabolites were associated with PE. Heterogeneity and pleiotropy tests verified the robustness of the MR results. Validation with another metabolite GWAS dataset revealed consistency trends in 6 of the known metabolites with preliminary analysis, particularly the finding that genetic susceptibility to low levels of arachidonate (20:4n6) and citrulline were risk factors for PE. The pathway analysis revealed glycolysis/gluconeogenesis and arginine biosynthesis involved in the pathogenesis of PE. CONCLUSIONS: This study identifies a causal relationship between some circulating metabolites and PE. Our study presented new perspectives on the pathogenesis of PE by integrating metabolomics with genomics, which opens up avenues for more accurate understanding and management of the disease, providing new potential candidate metabolic molecular markers for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of PE. Considering the limitations of MR studies, further research is needed to confirm the causality and underlying mechanisms of these findings.

Patterns and morphology develop in living systems such as embryos in response to chemical signals. To understand and exploit the interplay of chemical reactions with mechanical transformations, chemomechanical polymer systems have been synthesized by attaching chemicals into hydrogels. In this work, we design autonomous responsive elastic shells that undergo morphological changes induced by chemical reactions. We couple the local mechanical response of the gel with the chemical processes on the shell. This causes swelling and deswelling of the gel, generating diverse morphological changes, including periodic oscillations. We further introduce a mechanical instability and observe buckling-unbuckling dynamics with a response time delay. Moreover, we investigate the mechanical feedback on the chemical reaction and demonstrate the dynamic patterns triggered by an initial deformation. We show the chemical characteristics that account for the shell morphology and discuss the future designs for autonomous responsive materials.

Thiacloprid (THI) is a neonicotinoid insecticide, and its wide-ranging use has contributed to severe environmental and health problems. Dendrobium officinale polysaccharide (DOP) possesses multiple biological activities such as antioxidant and antiapoptosis effect. Although present research has shown that THI causes kidney injury, the exact molecular mechanism and treatment of THI-induced kidney injury remain unclear. The study aimed to investigate if DOP could alleviate THI-induced kidney injury and identify the potential molecular mechanism in quails. In this study, Japanese quails received DOP (200 mg/kg) daily with or without THI (4 mg/kg) exposure for 42 days. Our results showed that DOP improved hematological changes, biochemical indexes, and nephric histopathological changes induced by THI. Meanwhile, THI exposure caused oxidative stress, apoptosis, and autophagy. Furthermore, THI and DOP cotreatment significantly activated the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2/heme oxygenase-1 (Nrf2/HO-1) pathway, restored antioxidant enzyme activity, and reduced apoptosis and autophagy in quail kidneys. In summary, our study demonstrated that DOP mitigated THI-mediated kidney injury was associated with oxidative stress, apoptosis, and autophagy via activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway in quails.

With the development of deep learning and sensors and sensor collection methods, computer vision inspection technology has developed rapidly. The deep-learning-based classification algorithm requires the acquisition of a model with superior generalization capabilities through the utilization of a substantial quantity of training samples. However, due to issues such as privacy, annotation costs, and sensor-captured images, how to make full use of limited samples has become a major challenge for practical training and deployment. Furthermore, when simulating models and transferring them to actual image scenarios, discrepancies often arise between the common training sets and the target domain (domain offset). Currently, meta-learning offers a promising solution for few-shot learning problems. However, the quantity of supporting set data on the target domain remains limited, leading to limited cross-domain learning effectiveness. To address this challenge, we have developed a self-distillation and mixing (SDM) method utilizing a Teacher-Student framework. This method effectively transfers knowledge from the source domain to the target domain by applying self-distillation techniques and mixed data augmentation, learning better image representations from relatively abundant datasets, and achieving fine-tuning in the target domain. In comparison with nine classical models, the experimental results demonstrate that the SDM method excels in terms of training time and accuracy. Furthermore, SDM effectively transfers knowledge from the source domain to the target domain, even with a limited number of target domain samples.

Ionic liquids are regarded as green solvents mainly due to their non-volatile and easy regeneration and recycling properties. However, ionic liquids have negative effects on the environment and human health, especially alkyl imidazole ionic liquids are more toxic than traditional organic solutions. Studies on the toxicology, ecotoxicology, and degradation of ionic liquids are rarely found in the literature. Here, we prepared the cheap La and Ce-codoped TiO2@PAM (polyacrylamide) composite microspheres with a simple procedure for the first time to degrade three kinds of imidazole ionic liquids with high efficiency. The experimental results show that the composite La (0.25%) and Ce (0.15%)-codoped TiO2@PAM composite microspheres with calcination temperature of 450 °C had a high photocatalytic activity for 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium hexafluorophosphate, 1-hexyl-3-methyl imidazolium hexafluorophosphate, and 1-octyl-3-methyl imidazolium hexafluorophosphate with the concentration of 10 mg/L. The photocatalysis degradation extent of the three ionic liquids is 97.4, 91.2, and 88.5% at 90 min. This work opened a new route for the simple preparation of cheap composite microspheres in the photocatalytic degradation of ionic liquids with a high efficiency.
