RESUMEN
Sepsis arises from an uncontrolled inflammatory response triggered by infection or stress, accompanied by alteration in cellular energy metabolism, and a strong correlation exists between these factors. Alpha-ketoglutarate (α-KG), an intermediate product of the TCA cycle, has the potential to modulate the inflammatory response and is considered a crucial link between energy metabolism and inflammation. The scavenger receptor (SR-A5), a significant pattern recognition receptor, assumes a vital function in anti-inflammatory reactions. In the current investigation, we have successfully illustrated the ability of α-KG to mitigate inflammatory factors in the serum of septic mice and ameliorate tissue damage. Additionally, α-KG has been shown to modulate metabolic reprogramming and macrophage polarization. Moreover, our findings indicate that the regulatory influence of α-KG on sepsis is mediated through SR-A5. We also elucidated the mechanism by which α-KG regulates SR-A5 expression and found that α-KG reduced the N6-methyladenosine level of macrophages by up-regulating the m6A demethylase ALKBH5. α-KG plays a crucial role in inhibiting inflammation by regulating SR-A5 expression through m6A demethylation during sepsis. The outcomes of this research provide valuable insights into the relationship between energy metabolism and inflammation regulation, as well as the underlying molecular regulatory mechanism.
RESUMEN
Fruit ripening and the associated softening are major determinants of fruit quality and post-harvest shelf life. Although the mechanisms underlying fruit softening have been intensively studied, there are limited reports on the regulation of fruit softening in apples (Malus domestica). Here, we identified a zinc finger homeodomain transcription factor MdZF-HD11that trans-activates the promoter of Mdß-GAL18, which encodes a pectin-degradation enzyme associated with cell wall metabolism. Both MdZF-HD11 and Mdß-GAL18 genes were up-regulated by exogenous ethylene treatment and repressed by 1-methylcyclopropene treatment. Further experiments revealed that MdZF-HD11 binds directly to the Mdß-GAL18 promoter and up-regulates its transcription. Moreover, using transgenic apple fruit calli, we found that overexpression of Mdß-GAL18 or MdZF-HD11 significantly enhanced ß-galactosidase activity, and overexpression of MdZF-HD11 induced the expression of Mdß-GAL18. We also discovered that transient overexpression of Mdß-GAL18 or MdZF-HD11 in 'Golden Delicious' apple significantly increased the release of ethylene, reduced fruit firmness, promoted the transformation of skin color from green to yellow, and accelerated ripening and softening of the fruit. Finally, the overexpression of MdZF-HD11 in tomato also promoted fruit softening. Collectively, these results indicate that ethylene-induced MdZF-HD11 interacts with Mdß-GAL18 to promote the post-harvest softening of apple.

BACKGROUND: Asthma exacerbation (AE) is a significant clinical problem during pregnancy. This study aimed to identify maternal and perinatal outcomes associated with AE during pregnancy. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the Peking University Third Hospital database from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2020. We compared the clinical characteristics and maternal, perinatal and offspring outcomes of asthma with and without exacerbations among women who delivered during this period. The primary outcome was hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to analyze the clinical characteristics of AE during pregnancy and the association between AE and adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes. RESULTS: The prevalence of asthma during pregnancy increased from 0.52% in 2013 to 0.98% in 2020. Of the 220 patients with asthma during pregnancy included in the study, 105 experienced AE during pregnancy: 62.9% (n = 66) had mild-to-moderate AE and 37.1% (n = 39) had severe AE. Pregnant women with allergic rhinitis have a higher risk of AE during pregnancy. Women who experienced AE were more at risk for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy than women who did not experience any exacerbation (12.4%vs3.5%, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of asthma among pregnant women in China is on the rise. There is a notable correlation between pregnant women who suffer from allergic rhinitis and an elevated risk of AE during pregnancy. Studies have shown that AE during pregnancy are associated with an increased risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

To reduce the application dosage of thiamethoxam (TMX), we investigated the deposition and dissipation patterns in a pepper-planted ecosystem under different planting modes across four regions in China, namely Hainan (HN), Zhejiang (ZJ), Anhui (AH) and Hebei (HB). This study focused on the deposition and dissipation of TMX at concentrations of 63.00, 47.25, 31.50, 23.63 and 15.75 g a.i.hm-2. As the application dose increased, the deposition amount of TMX initially increased in the plants and cultivated soil, showing obvious geographic differences in four cultivation areas. Surprisingly, the initial amount of TMX deposited the pepper-cultivated greenhouse of ZJ and AH was 1.1-2.1-fold and 1.0-3.6-fold higher than that in the open field system at the same application dose, respectively. In pepper leaves, stems, fruits and soil, the dissipation exhibited rapid growth and then slowed. However, the residual concentration showed an increasing trend, followed by a subsequent decrease in the pepper roots. In different planting regions, the dissipation rate of TMX followed the order HN > ZJ > AH > HB in pepper plants and cultivated soil. In comparison to the open field, the total TMX retention rate in greenhouse was higher, indicating overall greater persistence in the greenhouse conditions. These findings reveal the deposition and dissipation characteristics of TMX within the pepper-field ecosystem, offering a significant contribution to the risk assessment of pesticides.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the prevalence and molecular characterization of bedaquiline resistance among MDR-TB isolates collected from Chongqing, China. METHODS: A total of 205 MDR-TB isolates were collected from Chongqing Tuberculosis Control Institute between March 2019 and June 2020. The MICs of BDQ were determined by microplate alamarblue assay. All strains were genotyped by melting curve spoligotyping, and were subjected to WGS. RESULTS: Among the 205 MDR isolates, the resistance rate of BDQ was 4.4% (9/205). The 55 (26.8%) were from male patients and 50 (24.4%) were new cases. Furthermore, 81 (39.5%) of these patients exhibited lung cavitation, 13 (6.3%) patients afflicted with diabetes mellitus, and 170 (82.9%) isolates belonged to Beijing family. However, the distribution of BDQ resistant isolates showed no significant difference among these characteristics. Of the 86 OFX resistant isolates, 8 isolates were XDR (9.3%, 8/86). Six BDQ resistant isolates (66.7%, 6/9) and two BDQ susceptible isolates (1.0%, 2/196) carried mutations in Rv0678. A total of 4 mutations types were identified in BDQ resistant isolates, including mutation in A152G (50%, 3/6), T56C (16.7%, 1/6), GA492 insertion (16.7%, 1/6), and A274 insertion (16.7%, 1/6). BDQ showed excellent activity against MDR-TB in Chongqing. CONCLUSIONS: BDQ showed excellent activity against MDR-TB in Chongqing. The resistance rate of BDQ was not related to demographic and clinical characteristics. Mutations in Rv0678 gene were the major mechanism to BDQ resistance, with A152G as the most common mutation type. WGS has a good popularize value and application prospect in the rapid detection of BDQ resistance.

The initial deposition amount, dissipation dynamics, retention rate, and field control efficacy of difenoconazole in pepper-soil system were studied with different application dosages, planting regions and patterns. The initial deposition amount of difenoconazole under the same application dosage showed the following order: fruits < cultivated soils < lower stems < upper stems < lower leaves < upper leaves, open field < greenhouse, and Changjiang < Cixi < Hefei < Langfang, respectively, which increased with increasing application dosage. The dissipation rates in leaves, stems, fruits and cultivated soils exhibited an initially fast and then slow trend, while the retention rates displayed a tendency of first increasing and then stabilizing with increasing application dosages. After 7 d of difenoconazole application, the retention rates at five concentrations were 10.3%- 39.1%, and the field efficacy mostly reached the minimum effective dose. These results suggested that difenoconazole could be reduced by 25% based on the minimum recommended dose meeting the requirements of field control efficacy for controlling pepper anthracnose.

ABSTRACT: Glucocorticoid receptors are essential for normal development and stress responses. Their role in H 2 O and Na + metabolism, especially in chronic heart failure (CHF), is not well defined. In a previous study, we found that glucocorticoids potentiate urination in CHF and promote H 2 O excretion by inhibiting the vasopressin receptor 2 pathway. The present study examines the effect of glucocorticoids on renal Na + excretion and the underlying mechanisms in CHF rats with acute sodium loading. CHF was induced by left coronary artery ligation for 8 weeks. Rats were randomly assigned to 5 groups: control, CHF, dexamethasone (DEX)-administered CHF, DEX-administered CHF treated with RU486 (mifepristone, a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist), and RU486-treated CHF. An acute sodium loading test was performed 6 hours after DEX administration. Blood and urine samples were collected, and hemodynamics were measured. The expression and localization of Na + transporter proteins were determined by immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry. DEX increased the urine volume and urinary sodium and improved cardiac function and the estimated glomerular filtration rate in CHF rats. The upregulation of the epithelial sodium channel ß and γ subunits, Na-K-2Cl cotransporter, serum glucocorticoid-regulated kinase 1 (SGK1), and Na + /K + -ATPase in the renal epithelium of CHF rats was downregulated by DEX. These beneficial effects were abolished by RU486. The expression of natriuretic peptide receptor A was opposite that of the above proteins. Glucocorticoids might induce profound natriuresis in CHF rats during acute sodium loading, which is associated with downregulating some Na + transporter proteins in the renal epithelium and improving intrarenal hemodynamics.

BACKGROUND: Caring for a family member with schizophrenia is associated with a significant burden, but may also bring about positive transformation among caregivers, which were rarely studied simultaneously. AIMS: The current study aims to investigate the association between caregiver burden and positive aspects of caregiving (PAC), as well as explore and compare the correlates of each. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a representative urban sample of schizophrenia family caregivers in China (N = 406). Participants were interviewed individually to complete questionnaires regarding socio-demographics, caregiver burden, PAC, and psychosocial factors that included social support, coping, and family functioning. RESULTS: The caregivers reported moderate levels of both caregiver burden (mean:43.05 ± 18.26, range: 0-88) and PAC (mean: 25.88 ± 9.59, range: 0-36), which were not significantly associated with each other (r = -0.06, p = 0.25) and had different correlates. Parent caregivers, middle and high school education, additional dependents, lower level of social support, and frequent endorsement of active and passive coping were all associated with more caregiver burden. Higher levels of social support, active coping, and family functioning were associated with higher PAC. CONCLUSIONS: Caring for a family member with schizophrenia can be both burdensome and rewarding. Caregiver burden and PAC coexist yet are unrelated with different correlates. Future research and intervention programs should not only focus on mitigating caregiver burden but also enhancing PAC, which may be realized through the improvement of social support, active coping, and family functioning while paying special attention to various socio-demographics.

There is a shared problem in current optical imaging technologies of how to obtain the optical parameters of biological tissues with complex profiles. In this work, an imaging system for obtaining the optical parameters of biological tissues with complex profile was presented. Firstly, Fourier transformation profilometry was used for obtaining the profile information of biological tissues, and then the difference of incident light intensity at different positions on biological tissue surface was corrected with the laws of illumination, and lastly the optical parameters of biological tissues were achieved with the spatial frequency domain imaging technique. Experimental results indicated the proposed imaging system could obtain the profile information and the optical parameters of biological tissues accurately and quickly. For the slab phantoms with height variation less than 30 mm and angle variation less than 40º, the maximum relative errors of the profile uncorrected optical parameters were 46.27% and 72.18%, while the maximum relative errors of the profile corrected optical parameters were 6.89% and 10.26%. Imaging experiments of a face-like phantom and a human's prefrontal lobe were performed respectively, which demonstrated the proposed imaging system possesses clinical application value for the achievement of the optical parameters of biological tissues with complex profiles. Besides, the proposed profile corrected method can be used to combine with the current optical imaging technologies to reduce the influence of the profile information of biological tissues on imaging quality.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to establish and evaluate a simultaneous amplification and testing method for detection of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB). METHODS: From January 2016 and December 2017 the pus or surgical excision from the lesions of inpatients admitted from Chongqing Public Health Treatment Center were collected. According to the clinical diagnosis, the samples were divided into two groups including EPTB (Group A) and other diseases excluded from tuberculosis diseases (Group B). Simultaneous detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) used Roche culture method, liquid culture method and simultaneous amplification and testing (SAT) method. The sensitivity and specificity of the SAT method were compared with culture methods and clinical diagnosis of EPTB. RESULTS: For 433 EPTB specimens and 49 non-TB specimens, the simultaneous amplification and testing tuberculosis (SAT-TB) results correlated with 80.5% (388/482 specimens) of the culture assay results. The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of the SAT-TB test for the diagnosis of EPTB were 83.6, 79.4, 59.4, and 93.0%, respectively, compared to culture methods. Compared with the clinical diagnosis of patients, the sensitivity and specificity of the SAT-TB test were 41.6 and 100%, respectively, the cultures test were 29.3 and 98.0%. CONCLUSIONS: SAT test is a simple and rapid test with high specificity which may enhance the detection of EPTB. SAT-TB is a higher clinical diagnosis value for EPTB in clinical microbiology laboratories.

PURPOSE: The Family Burden Interview Schedule (FBIS-24) and the Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview (ZBI-22) are among the most widely used measures for assessing caregiving burden, but their psychometric performances have not been compared in the same study of caregivers of people living with schizophrenia (PLS). This is important because the measures assess overlapping constructs- the FBIS-24 assesses objective burden (e.g., completion of manual tasks) and the ZBI-22 assesses subjective burden (e.g., perceived distress, stigma). This study seeks to fill this gap by comparing the reliability and validity of the FBIS-24 and the ZBI-22 in a Chinese community sample of caregivers of PLS. METHODS: A Cross-sectional stud was conducted in a community-based mental health service program in Central South part of China. A total of 327 primary family caregivers of PLS completed face-to-face interviews of the FBIS-24, the ZBI-22, the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), and the Family Adaptation, Partnership, Growth, Affection and Resolve Index scale (APGAR), and PLS were assessed using the Global Assessment of Function scale (GAF). RESULTS: Our findings show that both the FBIS-24 and ZBI-22 have comparable psychometric performance in terms of the internal consistency, convergent validity and known group's validity. CONCLUSION: Both the FBIS-24 and the ZBI-22 are psychometrically sound measures of caregiving burden but the choice of which measure to use will depend on the research question.

BACKGROUND: Conflicting evidence exists on whether parent or spouse caregivers experience better outcomes when caring for family members with schizophrenia. The current study aims to examine relative caregiving experiences and impacts of spouse and parent caregivers for people living with schizophrenia (PLS) in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 264 community-dwelling primary family caregivers of PLS. Face-to-face interviews were conducted to collect information on family caregiving activities; negative caregiving impacts including objective and subjective burden, and caregiver psychological distress such as depression and anxiety; positive caregiving impacts including caregiving rewarding feelings, and family functioning for spouse and parent caregivers. RESULTS: Both types of caregivers report engaging in similar caregiving activities and report comparable levels of objective burden. However, parent caregivers report significantly higher subjective burden than spouse caregivers (b = 7.94, 95%CI:2.08, 13.80, P < 0.01), which is also reflected in significantly higher depression (b = 3.88, 95%CI:1.35, 6.41, P < 0.01) and anxiety (b = 2.53, 95%CI: 0.22, 4.84, P < 0.05), and lower family functioning (b = - 1.71, 95%CI: - 2.73, - 0.49, P < 0.01). Despite these differences, both groups of caregivers report comparable rewarding feelings about caregiving. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings have implications for family caregivers globally, but especially for countries that adhere to Confucian cultural values and provide guidance for future family intervention programs. Such programs may do well to incorporate cultural values and beliefs in understanding caregiving and kinship family dynamics so as to support family caregivers, and in particular, the specific vulnerabilities of parent caregivers.

BACKGROUND: The past few decades have seen an exponential increase in using mobile phones to support medical care (mobile health [mHealth]) among people living with psychosis worldwide, yet little is known about WeChat use and WeChat-based mHealth among people living with schizophrenia (PLS) in China. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess WeChat use, endorsement of WeChat-based mHealth programs, and health related to WeChat use among PLS. METHODS: We recruited a random sample of 400 PLS from 12 communities in Changsha City of Hunan Province, China. WeChat use was assessed using the adapted WeChat Use Intensity Questionnaire (WUIQ). We also compared psychiatric symptoms, functioning, disability, recovery, quality of life, and general well-being between WeChat users and nonusers using one-to-one propensity-score matching. RESULTS: The WeChat use rate was 40.8% in this sample (163/400); 30.7% (50/163) had more than 50 WeChat friends and nearly half (81/163, 49.7%) spent more than half an hour on WeChat, a pattern similar to college students and the elderly. PLS also showed higher emotional connectedness to WeChat use than college students. About 80.4% (131/163) of PLS were willing to participate in a WeChat-based mHealth program, including psychoeducation (91/163, 55.8%), professional support (82/163, 50.3%), and peer support (67/163, 41.1%). Compared with nonusers, WeChat users were younger, better educated, and more likely to be employed. WeChat use was associated with improved health outcomes, including lower psychiatric symptoms, lower depression, higher functioning, better recovery, and higher quality of life. CONCLUSIONS: WeChat-based mHealth programs hold promise as an empowering tool to provide cost-effective interventions, to foster global recovery, and to improve both physical and mental well-being among PLS. WeChat and WeChat-based mHealth programs have the potential to offer a new path to recovery and well-being for PLS in China.

We present a spatial frequency domain (SFD) diffuse optical tomography for simultaneous acquisition of multi-wavelength tomographic images of turbid media. We propose a highly sensitive single-pixel SFD imaging system for simultaneously collecting multi-wavelength spatially modulated reflectance images, instead of using the expensive electron-multiplying charge-coupled device camera that requires switching between the multi-wavelength collections. The single-pixel SFD imaging system using three low-power light sources (455, 532 and 660 nm) that were intensity-modulated by square waves with three different frequencies for frequency encoding, and all the light sources were focused onto one digital micromirror device (DMD) for generating wide-field sinusoidal illumination patterns. Reflected light from the surface of the turbid media was modulated by the other DMD with many sampling patterns before being spatially integrated. Spatially integrated light signals were frequency decoded with a novel highly sensitive lock-in photon counting detection, then multi-wavelength spatially modulated reflectance images were recovered with the single-pixel imaging (SPI) method. We incorporated the two-dimensional discrete cosine transform (DCT) into the SPI method to reduce the number of sampling patterns, and, thereby, the proposed DCT-SPI scheme achieved a fast acquisition of SFD reflectance images that is desired for a dynamic SFD imaging application. Direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) amplitudes at all the locations on the media surface were extracted from the recovered images. Multi-wavelength tomographic images were reconstructed with an inversion algorithm based on the first-order Rytov approximation of the diffusion equation, using both the extracted DC and AC amplitudes. We performed experiments using a series of tissue simulating phantoms to verify the performances of the proposed approach and compared the experimental results with those using a conventional camera-based SFD imaging system. The results demonstrate that our DCT-SPI based SFD-DOT approach is well suited for simultaneous reconstruction of multi-wavelength tomographic images to pave the way for many SFD imaging applications.
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: By 2014 although tuberculosis (TB) incidence had fallen by an average of 1.5% per year since 2000 and was 18% lower than the level of in 2000, 1.5 million people died for TB in that year. One of reason was that drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (DRTB) spread. This study aims to determine drug resistant characteristics and genotype of DRTB that isolated from patients in a tuberculosis referral hospital of southwest China. METHODS: Five hundred thirty-eight drug resistant tuberculosis samples were collected from July 2013 to March 2015. All the isolates were identified by genomic deletions in region of difference 105 (RD105) and genotyped by mycobacterial interspersed repetitive unit-variable number tandem repeat typing (MIRU-VNTR). Polymorphism and cluster analysis of each locus was carried out using Bionumerics Version 3.0 and phyloviz software. RESULTS: Five hundred thirty-eight TB strains included 503 Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) isolates and 35 non Mycobacterium tuberculosis (NMTB) isolates. Of 503 isolates Beijing family type was 447 (88.9%, 447/503) and non-Beijing family type was 56 (11.1%, 56/503). Five hundred three DRTB isolates were divided into 345 genotypes, of which 265 isolates were single genotype and the remaining 238 strains were classified into 80 clusters with cluster rate of 47.3% and cluster ratio of 31.4%. Sixty-nine clusters belonged to Beijing family with cluster rate was 48.3% and clustering ratio was 32.9%. The non - Beijing family had 11 clusters with a cluster rate of 39.3% and the clustering ratio of 19.6%. Beijing genotype had a significant correlation with the age (P < 0.05), the retreatment patients (P < 0.05) and the city of Chongqing (P < 0.05), not with gender (P > 0.05). In the 9 Beijing genotype clusters each cluster contained some patients who lived in the same region. CONCLUSIONS: Beijing genotype was the predominant in the patients with DRTB in our hospital. In Chongqing retreatment patients with Beijing genotype MTB may be patient with DRTB. Drug resistance test (DST), regular medication and strict follow-up are very important for patients with Beijing genotype MTB. In Chongqing control and treatment of DRTB should be paid attention. Transmission and relations of patients with DRTB need to be further research.

BACKGROUND: Spatial frequency domain (SFD) measurement allows rapid and non-contact wide-field imaging of the tissue optical properties, thus has become a potential tool for assessing physiological parameters and therapeutic responses during photodynamic therapy of skin diseases. The conventional SFD measurement requires a reference measurement within the same experimental scenario as that for a test one to calibrate mismatch between the real measurements and the model predictions. Due to the individual physical and geometrical differences among different tissues, organs and patients, an ideal reference measurement might be unavailable in clinical trials. To address this problem, we present a reference-free SFD determination of absorption coefficient that is based on the modulation transfer function (MTF) characterization. METHODS: Instead of the absolute amplitude that is used in the conventional SFD approaches, we herein employ the MTF to characterize the propagation of the modulated lights in tissues. With such a dimensionless relative quantity, the measurements can be naturally corresponded to the model predictions without calibrating the illumination intensity. By constructing a three-dimensional database that portrays the MTF as a function of the optical properties (both the absorption coefficient µ a and the reduced scattering coefficient [Formula: see text]) and the spatial frequency, a look-up table approach or a least-square curve-fitting method is readily applied to recover the absorption coefficient from a single frequency or multiple frequencies, respectively. RESULTS: Simulation studies have verified the feasibility of the proposed reference-free method and evaluated its accuracy in the absorption recovery. Experimental validations have been performed on homogeneous tissue-mimicking phantoms with µ a ranging from 0.01 to 0.07 mm-1 and [Formula: see text] = 1.0 or 2.0 mm-1. The results have shown maximum errors of 4.86 and 7% for [Formula: see text] = 1.0 mm-1 and [Formula: see text] = 2.0 mm-1, respectively. We have also presented quantitative ex vivo imaging of human lung cancer in a subcutaneous xenograft mouse model for further validation, and observed high absorption contrast in the tumor region. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed method can be applied to the rapid and accurate determination of the absorption coefficient, and better yet, in a reference-free way. We believe this reference-free strategy will facilitate the clinical translation of the SFD measurement to achieve enhanced intraoperative hemodynamic monitoring and personalized treatment planning in photodynamic therapy.

We present a spatial-frequency domain (SFD) fluorescence tomography (FT) for acquiring three-dimensional fluorophore distribution in turbid media. The approach uses a composited epi-illumination of multi-frequency sinusoidal patterns on a sample of semi-infinite geometry and demodulates the measured data with a generalized phase shifting scheme to calculate the modulation transfer function (MTF) at each frequency. This method results in a significantly reduced number of the optical field measurements, as compared to those with separate illumination of single-frequency sinusoidal patterns, and, thereby, achieves a fast data acquisition that is desired for a dynamic imaging application. Fluorescence yield images are recovered with the normalized Born formulated inversion of the diffusion model by simultaneously using the multi-frequency MTFs. Simulative and experimental reconstructions are performed in comparison with the single-frequency scheme to validate the proposed algorithm. The results suggest that adoption of the multi-frequency strategy to the SFD-FT can substantially improve the reconstruction quality, as well as its imaging resolution and quantitative accuracy.
RESUMEN
INTRODUCTION: A culturally adaptive and easy-to-administer 12-item Caregiving Rewarding Feelings (CRF) scale has been developed in China yet never published in English and validated in another population. AIM: The current study aimed to validate the CRF among a community sample of Chinese caregivers of those diagnosed with schizophrenia. METHOD: A sample of 449 family caregivers was recruited for scale validation that included factorial validity, construct validity, measurement invariance, item analysis, internal consistency reliability, test-retest reliability, known-group validity, convergent validity and divergent validity. RESULTS: Confirmatory factor analysis supported the a priori three-factor structure. Construct validity was supported by high standard regression weight (SRW) and average variance extracted (AVE), measurement invariance across age and gender groups. The CRF showed good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Known-group validity was confirmed by the higher CRF scores among caregivers with certain socio-demographics. The convergent validity of the CRF was supported by its positive correlations with social support, active coping and family functioning. The divergent validity of the CRF was supported by its negative associations with stigma, stress and depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: This study confirmed the reliability and validity of the CRF specifically designed for caregivers in Chinese culture. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The CRF may be further applied and validated in other populations and other countries.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether women with pregnancy-onset asthma are predisposed to worse pregnancy outcomes compared with women with pre-pregnancy asthma. OBJECTIVE: To explore whether pregnancy-onset asthma leads to worse perinatal outcomes compared with pre-pregnancy asthma. METHODS: Women who were discharged with a diagnosis of asthma and gave birth to a live singleton were included in this retrospective cohort analysis. Women were separated into groups based on whether the asthma was diagnosed during or before pregnancy. We compared clinical characteristics, perinatal outcomes, and asthma exacerbations (AEs) between groups. RESULTS: A total of 335 women were included in this study, 39 of whom (11.6%) had pregnancy-onset asthma and 296 had pre-pregnancy asthma. All pregnant women in the pregnancy-onset group experienced AEs during pregnancy. The proportion of chronic hypertension, chronic hypertension with superimposed preeclampsia, and spontaneous preterm births in the pregnancy-onset group was significantly higher than that in the pre-pregnancy asthma group. After adjusting for age, body mass index, onset of asthma during pregnancy, and severity of AEs through multivariate analysis, pregnancy-onset asthma was an independent risk factor for spontaneous preterm birth (adjusted odds ratio = 7.71; 95% CI, 1.30-46.12) and severe AE was an independent risk factor for gestational hypertension and preeclampsia (adjusted odds ratio = 3.58; 95% CI, 1.30-9.87). CONCLUSIONS: During pregnancy, pregnancy-onset asthma in women is associated with an exacerbation of the condition. Obstetricians should be vigilant for signs of asthma onset during pregnancy. Other health care providers should watch for symptoms of gestational hypertension and preeclampsia in pregnant women with preexisting or new-onset asthma.

BACKGROUND: The question of whether segmentectomy and lobectomy have similar survival outcomes for patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a matter of debate. METHODS: A cohort study and randomized controlled trial were included, comparing segmentectomy and lobectomy, by utilizing computerized access to the Pubmed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases up until July 2022. The Cochrane Collaboration tool was used to evaluate the randomized controlled trials, while the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to evaluate the cohort studies. Sensitivity analyses were also carried out. RESULTS: The analysis incorporated 17 literature studies, including one randomized controlled trial and 16 cohort studies, and was divided into a segmentectomy group (n = 2081) and a lobectomy group (n = 2395) based on the type of surgery the patient underwent. Each study was followed up from 27 months to 130.8 months after surgery. Over survival (OS): HR = 1.14, 95%CI(0.97,1.32), P = 0.10; disease-free survival (DFS): HR = 1.13, 95%CI(0.91,1.41), P = 0.27; recurrence-free survival (RFS): HR = 0.95, 95%CI(0.81,1.12), P = 0.54. CONCLUSION: The results of the study suggest that the survival outcomes of the segmentectomy group were not inferior to that of the lobectomy group. Segmentectomy should therefore be considered as a treatment option for early stage NSCLC.
