RESUMEN

Extremely low-frequency electromagnetic radiation (ELF-EMF) are generated by electrical devices and power systems (1 to 300 Hz). Although several studies have demonstrated that ELF-EMF may beassociated with an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, other studies have shown no evidence of associations. This meta-analysis was conducted to assess the effect of extremely low frequency electromagnetic radiation on pregnancy outcomes. The following electronic bibliographic databases were searched to identify relevant studies: PubMed, Web Of Science, Cochrane library, Embase, EBSCO. In addition, the manual retrieval of relevant references was conducted as a supplement. Select all eligible studies published from Database construction library to March 10, 2021. Search type for queue research on influence of electromagnetic field radiation on pregnancy results. Data were screened and extracted independently by two researchers. Review Manager 5.3 software was used for the meta-analysis. There was no significant increase in the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, birth defects and preterm delivery in the pregnant women who lived near the electromagnetic fields compared with the control group. Conclusions: No correlation has been found between maternal ELF-EMF exposure and miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal birth defects and preterm delivery, while the effects on small gestational age and low birth weight are still uncertain. Related research with high-quality large samples and different regions are still needed for further verification.

RESUMEN

The classification of the distinct group of mesenchymal neoplasms, first described as 'Xp11 translocation perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa)' and for which the term 'melanotic Xp11 neoplasm' or 'Xp11 neoplasm with melanocytic differentiation' has recently been proposed, remains challenging and controversial. We collected 27 melanotic Xp11 neoplasms, the largest series to date, for a comprehensive evaluation. Fourteen of the cases, together with eight alveolar soft part sarcomas (ASPS), nine conventional PEComas and a control group of seven normal tissues were submitted to RNA sequencing. Follow-up available in 22 patients showed 5-year overall survival and 5-year disease-free survival of 47.6 and 35.7%, respectively, which were similar to ASPS and significantly worse than conventional PEComa. Univariate analysis of location (occurring in the kidney versus not kidney), infiltrative growth pattern, nuclear pleomorphism, mitotic activity ≥2/50 high-power fields (HPF), necrosis and lymphovascular invasion were found to be associated with overall survival and/or disease-free survival. Multivariate analysis identified that location was the only factor found to independently correlate with disease-free survival. More importantly, RNA sequencing-based clustering analysis segregated melanotic Xp11 neoplasm and ASPS from other tumors, including conventional PEComa and Xp11 translocation renal cell carcinoma, and formed a compact cluster representative of the largely similar expression signature. Here we clearly define the true biologic nature of melanotic Xp11 neoplasms which are distinctive malignant mesenchymal tumors, rather than simply PEComa variants with occasionally unpredictable behavior. Meanwhile, melanotic Xp11 neoplasm and ASPS more likely represent phenotypic variants of the same entity, which is distinct from conventional PEComa and Xp11 translocation renal cell carcinoma. Based on these important findings, melanotic Xp11 neoplasm might be reclassified into a distinctive entity together with ASPS, independent from PEComa, in future revisions of the current WHO categories of tumors of soft tissue and bone for the improved reclassification. © 2020 Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The clonal spread of multiple drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii is an emerging problem in China. We analysed the molecular epidemiology of Acinetobacter baumanni isolates at three teaching hospitals and investigated the risk factors, clinical features, and outcomes of hospital-acquired pneumonia caused by extensive drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (XDRAB) infection in Guangzhou, China. METHODS: Fifty-two A. baumannii isolates were collected. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was used to assess the genetic relationships among the isolates. The bla OXA-51-like gene was amplified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing. The resistance phenotypes were determined using the disc diffusion method. A retrospective case-control study was performed to determine factors associated with XDRAB pneumonia. RESULTS: Most of the 52 A. baumannii isolates (N = 37, 71.2%) were collected from intensive care units (ICUs). The respiratory system was the most common bodily site from which A. baumannii was recovered (N = 45, 86.5%). Disc diffusion classified the isolates into 17 multidrug-resistant (MDR) and 35 extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains. MLST grouped the A. baumannii isolates into 5 existing sequence types (STs) and 7 new STs. ST195 and ST208 accounted for 69.2% (36/52) of the isolates. The clonal relationship analysis showed that ST195 and ST208 belonged to clonal complex (CC) 92. According to the sequence-based typing (SBT) of the bla OXA-51-like gene, 51 A. baumannii isolates carried OXA-66 and the rest carried OXA-199. There were no significant differences with respect to the resistance phenotype between the CC92 and non-CC92 strains (P = 0.767). The multivariate analysis showed that the APACHE II score, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cardiac disease were independent risk factors for XDRAB pneumonia (P < 0.05). The mortality rate of XDRAB pneumonia was high (up to 42.8%), but pneumonia caused by XDRAB was not associated with in-hospital mortality (P = 0.582). CONCLUSIONS: ST195 may be the most common ST in Guangzhou, China, and may serve as a severe epidemic marker. SBT of bla OXA-51-like gene variants may not result in sufficient dissimilarities to type isolates in a small-scale, geographically restricted study of a single region. XDRAB pneumonia was strongly related to systemic illnesses and the APACHE II score but was not associated with in-hospital mortality.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Primary cardiac osteosarcoma is extremely rare. There is no cohort study on such tumours to date. The aim of this study is to investigate the clinical characteristics and outcome patterns of such tumours. METHODS: A thorough literature review was performed, and all relevant clinical items were collected. A total of 53 cases of primary cardiac osteosarcoma were enrolled in this study, including 25 males and 28 females. RESULTS: The age at diagnosis ranged from 14 to 77 years with a mean age of 43.6 years. The clinical manifestations, imaging features, and laboratory tests of the primary cardiac osteosarcomas were similar to other types of primary cardiac tumours. Sex, tumour size and adjunctive chemo-radiotherapy were found to affect the overall survival pattern. CONCLUSIONS: The present study may provide an effective consultation for the diagnosis and treatment of this tumour.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the satisfaction of patients with Crowe Ⅲ-Ⅳ developmental dysplasia of the hip(DDH) after total hip arthroplasty and the related factors. METHODS: A retrospective study included 169 patients with Crowe type Ⅲ-Ⅳ DDH who underwent total hip arthroplasty between March 2013 and March 2018. Patients were surveyed through WeChat, covering overall satisfaction with the operation, satisfaction with ten daily functions, and the top five questions perceived to have a great impact on daily life. Preoperative and postoperative hip function was evaluated by Harris score. RESULTS: One hundred and forty-five questionnaires were received, with a follow-up period ranging from 1 to 5 years with an average of (3.23±1.22) years. Among these patients, 118 patients were satisfied with the surgical outcomes, while 27 patients were dissatisfied, with the overall satisfaction rate of 81.38%(118/145). The top five problems affecting patient life were postoperative hip pain, limb length discrepancy, walking, stair climbing, and squatting. There were no statistical differences in age, sex, body mass index, preoperative Harris scores (P>0.05). However, the dissatisfied group had lower postoperative Harris scores. Postoperative hip pain and limb length discrepancy were identified as direct factors contributing to postoperative surgical dissatisfaction. CONCLUSION: Total hip arthroplasty for patients with Crowe type Ⅲ-Ⅳ DDH is challenging. Postoperative hip pain (mild or severe) and limb length discrepancy (>2 cm) are independent risk factors for postoperative dissatisfaction.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: We studied the relationships among Cx43, CD105, and VEGF in specimens of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with different serum AFP levels with respect to recurrence and metastasis. METHODS: Expressions of Cx43, CD105, and VEGF in 234 HCC tissue specimens were examined using tissue microarray and immunohistochemistry. Cx43 mRNA expression was examined in 38 frozen HCC specimens using RT-PCR. Correlations between these expressions and tumor recurrence, metastasis, and prognosis were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses. RESULTS: Cx43 expression correlated with early tumor recurrence (P = 0.001), disease-free survival (P = 0.026), and overall survival (P = 0.000) in patients with serum AFP < 400 ng/ml, but not in those with serum AFP ≥ 400 µg/L. Cx43 expression is an independent predictor of later recurrence and longer overall survival and is inversely correlated with expression of CD105 and VEGF (P = 0.018 and 0.023, respectively), histological differentiation (P = 0.002), vessel tumor embolism (P = 0.029), and focal number (P = 0.017). Immunohistochemistry showed that Cx43 expression in patients with low AFP was lower in patients with distant metastases than in those with no metastasis or those with liver metastasis. Patients with early recurrence expressed less Cx43 mRNA than did those with no recurrence (χ2 = 9.827, P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Cx43 expression can delay early HCC recurrence, metastasis, and poor prognosis after radical hepatectomy in patients with HBV-related HCC and low AFP.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The clonal spread of Acinetobacter baumannii is a global problem, and carbapenems, such as imipenem, remain the first-choice agent against A. baumannii. Using synergy to enhance the antibiotic activity of carbapenems could be useful. Here, amlodipine (AML) was tested alone and with imipenem against A. baumannii isolates. METHODS: Forty-two isolates of A. baumannii were collected. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) assessed the genetic relationship of the isolates. The resistance phenotypes were determined using disc diffusion. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the drugs were determined by broth microdilution. The combined effects of the drugs were determined by a checkerboard procedure. Metallo-ß-lactamase (MBL) was determined using the MBL Etest. RESULTS: Forty-two A. baumannii isolates were collected from 42 patients who were mostly older than 65 years and had long inpatient stays (≥ 7 days). A. baumannii was mostly recovered from the respiratory system (N = 35, 83.3%). Most patients (N = 27, 64.3%) received care in intensive care units (ICUs). Disc diffusion testing demonstrated that A. baumannii susceptibility to polymyxin B was 100%, while susceptibility to other antimicrobial agents was less than 30%, classifying the isolates into 10 MDR and 32 XDR strains. MLST grouped the A. baumannii isolates into 4 existing STs and 6 new STs. STn4 carried allele G1, with a T → C mutation at nt3 on the gpi111 locus. STn5 carried allele A1, possessing A → C mutations at nt156 and nt159 on the gltA1 locus. ST195 and ST208 accounted for 68.05% (29/42) of the isolates. Clonal relation analysis showed that ST195 and ST208 belonged to clonal complex (CC) 92. The inhibitory concentration of imipenem ranged from 0.5 to 32 µg/ml, and that of AML ranged from 40 to 320 µg/ml. In combination, the susceptibility rate of A. baumannii isolates increased from 16.7% to 54.8% (P = 0.001). In the checkerboard procedure, half of the isolates (N = 21, 50.0%) demonstrated synergy or partial synergy with the drug combination. The MBL Etest revealed that 1 A. baumannii strain (N = 1, 2.4%) produced MBL. CONCLUSIONS: CC92 was the major clone spreading in our hospital. AML improved the activity of imipenem against A. baumannii isolates in vitro but did not inhibit MBL.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore the outcome of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) in the calf after total knee arthroplasty. METHODS: From June 2009 to June 2011, 159 patients with DVT in the calf after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were divided into two groups. Group A (active mobilization) included 80 patients and group B (passive mobilization) 79 patients. These patients were checked with ultrasonography 1 week and 4 weeks postoperation. The changes of DVT in the calf, ROM, KSS score and WOMAC score were observed. RESULTS: The disappearance rates of the calf DVT in groups A and B were 35% and 33% 4 weeks postoperation. There was similar DVT disappearance rate in the two groups (P=0.91 ). No patient developed proximal propagation. There was no difference of the ROM (111.9° ± 13.4° vs. 110.5° ± 10.9°, P=0.490), KSS knee score ( 93.5 ± 4.7 vs. 93.9 ± 5.1, P=0.621), KSS function score (83.4 ± 15.1 vs. 82.9 ± 14.5, P=0.513) and WOMAC score (90.9 ± 5.7 vs. 90. 3 ± 6.1, P=0.535) in groups A and B. CONCLUSION: A DVT in the calf after TKA can resorb spontaneously with time. The treatment of a DVT in the calf does not need additional anticoagulation.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathologic features and prognosis of plasmacytoid urothelial carcinoma (PUC) of the urinary bladder. METHODS: The clinical and pathologic findings of 16 cases of PUC were retrospectively reviewed. Immunohistochemical study (MaxVision method) was carried out. The follow-up data were analyzed. RESULTS: There were altogether 15 males and 1 female. The age of patients ranged from 40 years to 85 years (median = 64 years). Most patients (15/16) presented with hematuria. The tumor cells were small to medium in size and contained eccentric nuclei and moderate to abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, assuming a plasmacytoid appearance. The architectural pattern varied from loosely cohesive sheets to cords, papillae, small nests or gland-like structures. Most tumors invaded into the lamina propria or muscularis propria. Twelve of the 16 cases had concurrent conventional urothelial carcinoma component. Immunohistochemical study showed that the tumor cells in all cases were strongly positive for AE1/AE3, epithelial membrane antigen, CK7 and CK18. CK20 and uroplakin III were also expressed in 9 cases. CEA, p53, CD138, p63 and E-cadherin were positive in 12, 13, 15, 11 and 10 cases, respectively. Ki-67 index ranged from 5% to 70% (mean = 30%). All tumors were negative for vimentin, LCA, kappa/lambda light chains, S-100 protein, HMB 45,Melan A, smooth muscle actin and desmin. Follow-up information was available in 13 patients. The duration of follow up ranged from 3 months to 10 years. Three patients died of distant metastasis at 3, 27 and 60 months after the operation, respectively. One patient was alive with disease at 25 months. One was alive at 43 months with a prior recurrence. Another 8 patients were alive and disease free at 7 to 120 months. CONCLUSIONS: PUC of the urinary bladder is a rare variant of high-grade urothelial carcinoma. Immunohistochemical study with positivity for CK7, CK20, p63 and uroplakin III and negative staining for vimentin and LCA may be helpful in the differential diagnosis. PUC is a malignant tumor with high invasiveness, high recurrence rate and poor prognosis. Radical cystectomy is considered as the first line treatment for PUC.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the expression of carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX), PAX2 and PAX8 in different types of renal epithelial tumor and their association with clinicopathologic characteristics. METHODS: Immunohistochemical study by EnVision method was performed in order to assess the expression of CAIX, PAX2 and PAX8 in 155 cases of renal cell carcinoma and 4 cases of metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC). Ninety-six cases of non-neoplastic renal parenchymal tissue adjacent to CCRCC, 8 cases of clear cell hepatocellular carcinoma and 2 cases of clear cell hidradenoma were used as controls. RESULTS: CAIX was commonly expressed in CCRCC (94.0%, 63/67), of which 77.8% (49/63) showed strong positivity. CAIX was focally positive in papillary renal cell carcinoma, collecting duct carcinoma and urothelial carcinoma of renal pelvis. It was negative in chromophobe renal cell carcinoma, oncocytoma and adjacent non-neoplastic renal tissue. CAIX was also strongly expressed in the 4 cases of metastatic CCRCC. Focal expression of CAIX was demonstrated in the 8 cases of clear cell hepatocellular carcinoma and 2 cases of clear cell hidradenoma. The expression of CAIX in CCRCC did not correlate with tumor grading, clinical staging and presence of distal metastasis. On the other hand, PAX2 showed positive expression in different types of renal epithelial tumor, clear cell hepatocellular carcinoma and clear cell hidradenoma in various degrees. In contrast, PAX8 was commonly expressed in all types of renal epithelial tumor, with the exception of urothelial carcinoma of renal pelvis. PAX8 was not expressed in clear cell hepatocellular carcinoma and clear cell hidradenoma. Regarding diagnosis of CCRCC, CAIX demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity. PAX2 showed high specificity but low sensitivity. PAX8 was sensitive and specific in the diagnosis of renal epithelial tumor. CONCLUSIONS: CAIX is a useful immunohistochemical marker with high specificity and sensitivity in distinguishing CCRCC from other types of renal epithelial tumor and clear cell tumors of non-renal origin. PAX2 is a marker with high sensitivity and low specificity for diagnosis of renal epithelial tumors. PAX8 is typically expressed in renal epithelial tumors. The combined detection of CAIX, PAX2 and PAX8 is useful in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of renal epithelial tumors.

RESUMEN

Aim: To assess the metabolic characteristics of non-obese metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) compared with obese MAFLD and the relationship of MAFLD with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and diabetic retinopathy in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: Data were obtained from 536 T2DM patients (355 women, 181 men; age 58.2 ± 12.0 years). We explored the difference in clinical characteristics between obese MAFLD (body mass index ≥25 kg/m2) and non-obese MAFLD (body mass index <25 kg/m2) in T2DM patients. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the means of continuous variables, and the Chi-squared test was used to compare the differences in frequencies of categorical variables. Logistic regression models were adopted to calculate odds ratios. Results: The prevalence of MAFLD in hospitalized Chinese T2DM patients was calculated to be 42.7%. Both obese and non-obese MAFLD patients had higher levels of body mass index (BMI), waist circumfere nce, triglyceride, alanine aminotransferase, aspar tate aminotransferase, γ-glutamyltransferase, you nger age, higher prevalence of hyperlipidemia and shorter duration of T2DM and lower incidence of diabetic retinopathy, compared with participants with out MAFLD in the same weight group. Uric acid levels were positively correlated with the risk of MAFLD only in non-obese subjects but not in obese subjects. In non-obese patients with T2DM, a negative correlation was found between the prevalence of MAFLD and diabetic retinopathy. Conclusion: Even in non-obese patients with T2DM, BMI was found to be an independent risk factor for MAFLD. These findings support a more structured, risk-factor-based approach to MAFLD management, particularly in patients with T2DM. Non-obese MAFLD has unique results in metabolic characteristics and the correlation with diabetic retinopathy and diabetic peripheral neuropathy, which should be further explored.

RESUMEN

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disease with etiology rooted in genetic vulnerability and environmental factors. Here we combine quantitative epidemiologic study of pesticide exposures and PD with toxicity screening in dopaminergic neurons derived from PD patient induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to identify Parkinson's-relevant pesticides. Agricultural records enable investigation of 288 specific pesticides and PD risk in a comprehensive, pesticide-wide association study. We associate long-term exposure to 53 pesticides with PD and identify co-exposure profiles. We then employ a live-cell imaging screening paradigm exposing dopaminergic neurons to 39 PD-associated pesticides. We find that 10 pesticides are directly toxic to these neurons. Further, we analyze pesticides typically used in combinations in cotton farming, demonstrating that co-exposures result in greater toxicity than any single pesticide. We find trifluralin is a driver of toxicity to dopaminergic neurons and leads to mitochondrial dysfunction. Our paradigm may prove useful to mechanistically dissect pesticide exposures implicated in PD risk and guide agricultural policy.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have revealed that Mitochondrial Antiviral Signaling (MAVS) protein plays an essential role in the inhibition of viral infection through type I interferon (IFN) pathway. It has been shown that 3C (pro) cysteine protease of coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) cleaves MAVS to inhibit type I IFNs induction. Other workers also found that MAVS knock-out mice suffered CVB3 susceptibility and severe histopathological change. Accordingly, our experiments were designed to explore the protection of over-expressing MAVS against CVB3 infection and the possible mechanism. RESULTS: In this study, HeLa cells (transfected with MAVS constructs pre- or post- exposure to CVB3) were used to analyze the function of exogenous MAVS on CVB3 infection. The results revealed that though CVB3 infection induced production of type I IFNs, viral replication and cell death were not effectively inhibited. Similarly, exogenous MAVS increased type I IFNs moderately. Morever, we observed robust production of type I IFNs in CVB3 post-infected HeLa cells thereby successfully inhibiting CVB3 infection, as well formation of cytopathic effect (CPE) and cell death. Finally, introduction of exogenous MAVS into CVB3 pre-infected cells also restricted viral infection efficiently by greatly up-regulating IFNs. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, exogenous MAVS effectively prevents and controls CVB3 infection by modulating and promoting the production of type I IFNs. The IFNs level in MAVS over-expressing cells is still tightly regulated by CVB3 infection. Thus, the factors that up-regulate MAVS might be an alternative prescription in CVB3-related syndromes by enhancing IFNs production.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression of CK19 in HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues in patients with low serum AFP concentration and the relationship between them and the recurrence and prognosis of HCC after R0 radical hepatectomy. METHODS: The expressions of CK19 and Ki67 in HCC tissues of 235 cases were examined using tissue microarray and two-step methods of PV-6000 immunohistochemistry. The expression of CK19 mRNA in 20 frozen HCC specimens was examined by RT-PCR. The correlation between gene expressions and tumor recurrence and prognosis was analyzed. RESULTS: Among the 235 HBV-related HCC patients after R0 radical hepatectomy, the median disease-free survival (DFS) was 31.2 months in the patients with serum AFP < 400 µg/L and 13.8 months in the patients with serum AFP ≥ 400 µg/L (P = 0.041), the overall survival (OS) was 84.0 and 58.6 months in the two subgroups (P = 0.125), and the tumor recurrence within one year was in 43 cases (27%) and 37 cases (49.3%), respectively, (P = 0.001). The DFS was 11.6 months in the CK19-positive cases and 27.0 months in the CK19-negative cases (P > 0.05). The OS was significantly lower in the CK19-positive cases than that in the CK19-negative cases (P = 0.023). Both DFS and OS in the CK19-positive cases with AFP < 400 µg/L were significantly lower than those in the CK19-negative cases with AFP < 400 µg/L (both P < 0.05). The CK19 expression was significantly correlated with histological differentiation (P = 0.023), number of tumor foci (P = 0.044), vascular tumor embolism (P = 0.005), regional lymph node metastasis (P = 0.023), and 1-year recurrence (P = 0.006). Among the patients with AFP < 400 µg/L, the 1-year recurrence was 53% in the CK19-positive cases and 23% in the CK19-negative cases (P < 0.001), the median DFS was 11.3 months in CK19-positive cases and 34.0 months in CK19-negative cases (P = 0.010), and the median OS was 19.5 months in the CK19-positive cases, significantly lower than 84.0 months in the CK19-negative cases (P = 0.001). Cox regression analysis showed that CK19-positive expression was an independent factor affecting early HCC recurrence and prognosis. CONCLUSION: In HBV-related HCC patients after radical hepatectomy with AFP < 400 µg/L, positive expression of CK19 indicates a higher proliferation and invasiveness of HCC, and is an important factor of early recurrence and poor prognosis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the disease spectrum, clinical and pathologic features of primary cardiac neoplasms at a single medical institution during a period of eight years. METHODS: The clinical and pathologic features of 81 cases of primary cardiac neoplasms encountered at the Affiliated Hospital of Medical College, Qingdao University from January, 2004 to December, 2011, either for cardiovascular surgery or as pathology consultation cases, were retrospectively reviewed. Immunohistochemical study was carried out in selected examples. RESULTS: Amongst the 81 cases studied, 73 cases (90.1%) were benign and 8 cases (9.9%) were malignant. Cardiac myxomas accounted for 97.3% (71/73) of all the benign cases. Six of the 8 malignant cases represented soft tissue sarcomas. The commonest presenting symptom was dyspnea. The histologic subtypes included myxoma (number = 71), angiosarcoma (number = 2), malignant fibrous histiocytoma (number = 2), hemangioma (number = 1), liposarcoma (number = 1), lymphoma (number = 1), myxofibrosarcoma (number = 1) and papillary fibroelastoma (number = 1). CONCLUSIONS: While the majority of primary cardiac neoplasms are myxomas, other tumor types do exist. Accurate histologic diagnosis and timely surgery are crucial in patient management.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathologic features, immunohistochemical profiles and prognosis of chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (ChRCC). METHODS: Forty-two cases of ChRCC were retrieved from the archival files of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University, 401 Hospital of PLA and Qingdao Municipal Hospital from 2003 to 2011. The clinical and pathologic features of the tumors were reviewed. Hale colloidal iron staining was performed and EnVision immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of a series of immunologic markers. Forty cases of clear cell renal cell carcinoma and 10 cases of renal oncocytoma were selected as controls. RESULTS: The patients included 17 males and 25 females. The age of patients ranged from 39 years to 78 years (median age = 57 years). On gross examination, the tumors ranged from 2 cm to 19 cm in greatest dimension (mean size = 7.3 cm). Histologically, the tumors were mainly composed of solid sheets, acini or tubules of malignant cells. The tumor cells contained clear finely reticular ("chromophobe") and eosinophilic cytoplasm with perinuclear clearing. The nuclear outline was irregular and wrinkled. Nucleoli were inconspicuous and mitotic figures were barely seen. Hale colloidal iron stain was positive in all cases. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were variably positive for EMA (100%, 42/42), CK7 (95.2%, 40/42), Ksp-cad (92.9%, 39/42), CK18 (88.1%, 37/42), CD117 (61.9, 26/42), CD10 (31.0%, 13/42) and PAX2 (28.6%, 12/42). They were negative for vimentin, CA IX and TFE3. The follow-up period in 31 patients ranged from 2 to 77 months (average duration = 29 months). Three patients died of tumor metastasis 3, 8, 13 months respectively after the operation. Twenty-eight patients were still alive without evidence of tumor recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: ChRCC predominantly occurs in middle-aged and elderly patients. It often carries a favorable prognosis. The presence of plant cell-like morphology, pale cells with uniform reticular microvesicular appearance and perinuclear clearing are characteristic histologic features. The diffuse positivity for Hale colloidal iron stain and EMA/CK7/Ksp-cadherin/CD117-positive immunoprofiles are also useful in differential diagnosis.

RESUMEN

According to the baseline departure of multi-component alkane gas mixture spectra, direct orthogonal signal correction (DOSC) algorithm was proposed to pretreat the infrared spectra data. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer was used to sample 936 spectra data of seven components gas mixture, including methane, ethane, propane, iso-butane, n-butane, isopentane and n-pentane gases. The concentration of each component ranges from 0.01% to 0.1%, 0.01% to 0.1%, 0.01% to 0.15%, 0.0% to 0.1%, 0.0% to 0.1%, 0.0% to 0.05%, and 0.0% to 0.05%, respectively. For analyzing intuitively, partial least square regression (PLSR) was introduced to build the component gas quantitative analysis model. In experiment, DOSC method was compared with first derivative algorithm (FDA) and second derivative algorithm (SDA). In order to get the optimal model, ergodic optimization method was used to select the optimal parameters of the model, i. e. the step of the derivative algorithm, the number of the primary component of the PLSR and the number of orthogonal components of the DOSC algorithm. The experiment results show that DOSC algorithm has the better effect in the field of infrared spectra data pretreating. The average mean relative error (MRE) of the component gas analysis models is 16.58%, which declined by 66.80% from the average MRE before data pretreating 49.93%. Compared with DA, the average MRE declined by 51.51% from 34.19% after pretreated by FDA, and declined by 56.30% from 37.94% after pretreated by SDA. So DOSC method is feasible to pretreat the IR spectra data, and has definite practical and investigation value.

RESUMEN

(-)-Anisomelic acid, isolated from Anisomeles indica (L.) Kuntze (Labiatae) leaves, is a macrocyclic cembranolide with a trans-fused α-methylene-γ-lactone motif. Anisomelic acid effectively inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication and viral-induced cytopathic effects with an EC50 of 1.1 and 4.3 µM, respectively. Challenge studies of SARS-CoV-2-infected K18-hACE2 mice showed that oral administration of anisomelic acid and subcutaneous dosing of remdesivir can both reduce the viral titers in the lung tissue at the same level. To facilitate drug discovery, we used a semisynthetic approach to shorten the project timelines. The enantioselective semisynthesis of anisomelic acid from the naturally enriched and commercially available starting material (+)-costunolide was achieved in five steps with a 27% overall yield. The developed chemistry provides opportunities for developing anisomelic-acid-based novel ligands for selectively targeting proteins involved in viral infections.

RESUMEN

Almost all intracranial dermoid cysts typically display low-density lesions on plain computerized tomography (CT) scans due to abundant lipids content. CT hyperattenuating dermoid cyst (CHADC) is very uncommon with only nine case reports in the literature update, which occurs exclusively in the posterior fossa. Moreover, CHADC with mural nodule is exceptionally rare, and only one such case was documented previously. Here, we report a new case of cerebellar CHADC with mural nodule in a 14-year-old male patient who presented with a 4-week history of dull headache and 5-day history of gait disturbance. With an average attenuation value of 89.9 Hounsfield units on CT scans, the lesion mainly displayed T1 hyperintensity, T2 hypointensity, and FLAIR hypointensity on magnetic resonance imaging. The patient underwent lesion gross total resection and symptomatic improvement, and final pathology was consistent with dermoid cyst. For further clarifying the mechanism of unusual CT hyperdensity, we sampled the cystic content and quantified its protein, calcium, and cholesterol, and our result suggested the high protein, high calcium, and low lipids in contents was the main mechanism of increased CT attenuation for CHADC.
