RESUMEN

Proposed mechanisms for the production of calcium in the first stars (population III stars)-primordial stars that formed out of the matter of the Big Bang-are at odds with observations1. Advanced nuclear burning and supernovae were thought to be the dominant source of the calcium production seen in all stars2. Here we suggest a qualitatively different path to calcium production through breakout from the 'warm' carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle through a direct experimental measurement of the 19F(p, γ)20Ne breakout reaction down to a very low energy point of 186 kiloelectronvolts, reporting a key resonance at 225 kiloelectronvolts. In the domain of astrophysical interest2, at around 0.1 gigakelvin, this thermonuclear 19F(p, γ)20Ne rate is up to a factor of 7.4 larger than the previous recommended rate3. Our stellar models show a stronger breakout during stellar hydrogen burning than previously thought1,4,5, and may reveal the nature of calcium production in population III stars imprinted on the oldest known ultra-iron-poor star, SMSS0313-67086. Our experimental result was obtained in the China JinPing Underground Laboratory7, which offers an environment with an extremely low cosmic-ray-induced background8. Our rate showcases the effect that faint population III star supernovae can have on the nucleosynthesis observed in the oldest known stars and first galaxies, which are key mission targets of the James Webb Space Telescope9.

Anxiety-related disorders respond to cognitive behavioral therapies, which involved the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Previous studies have suggested that subregions of the mPFC have different and even opposite roles in regulating innate anxiety. However, the specific causal targets of their descending projections in modulating innate anxiety and stress-induced anxiety have yet to be fully elucidated. Here, we found that among the various downstream pathways of the prelimbic cortex (PL), a subregion of the mPFC, PL-mediodorsal thalamic nucleus (MD) projection, and PL-ventral tegmental area (VTA) projection exhibited antagonistic effects on anxiety-like behavior, while the PL-MD projection but not PL-VTA projection was necessary for the animal to guide anxiety-related behavior. In addition, MD-projecting PL neurons bidirectionally regulated remote but not recent fear memory retrieval. Notably, restraint stress induced high-anxiety state accompanied by strengthening the excitatory inputs onto MD-projecting PL neurons, and inhibiting PL-MD pathway rescued the stress-induced anxiety. Our findings reveal that the activity of PL-MD pathway may be an essential factor to maintain certain level of anxiety, and stress increased the excitability of this pathway, leading to inappropriate emotional expression, and suggests that targeting specific PL circuits may aid the development of therapies for the treatment of stress-related disorders.

BACKGROUND: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with EGFR mutations exhibit an unfavorable response to immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) monotherapy, and their tumor microenvironment (TME) is usually immunosuppressed. TGF-ß plays an important role in immunosuppression; however, the effects of TGF-ß on the TME and the efficacy of anti-PD-1 immunotherapy against EGFR-mutated tumors remain unclear. METHODS: Corresponding in vitro studies used the TCGA database, clinical specimens, and self-constructed mouse cell lines with EGFR mutations. We utilized C57BL/6N and humanized M-NSG mouse models bearing EGFR-mutated NSCLC to investigate the effects of TGF-ß on the TME and the combined efficacy of TGF-ß blockade and anti-PD-1 therapy. The changes in immune cells were monitored by flow cytometry. The correlation between TGF-ß and immunotherapy outcomes of EGFR-mutated NSCLC was verified by clinical samples. RESULTS: We identified that TGF-ß was upregulated in EGFR-mutated NSCLC by EGFR activation and subsequent ERK1/2-p90RSK phosphorylation. TGF-ß directly inhibited CD8+ T cell infiltration, proliferation, and cytotoxicity both in vitro and in vivo, but blocking TGF-ß did not suppress the growth of EGFR-mutated tumors in vivo. Anti-TGF-ß antibody combined with anti-PD-1 antibody significantly inhibited the proliferation of recombinant EGFR-mutated tumors in C57BL/6N mice, which was superior to their monotherapy. Mechanistically, the combination of anti-TGF-ß and anti-PD-1 antibodies significantly increased the infiltration of CD8+ T cells and enhanced the anti-tumor function of CD8+ T cells. Moreover, we found that the expression of TGF-ß1 in EGFR-TKI resistant cell lines was significantly higher than that in parental cell lines. The combination of anti-TGF-ß and nivolumab significantly inhibited the proliferation of EGFR-TKI resistant tumors in humanized M-NSG mice and prolonged their survival. CONCLUSIONS: Our results reveal that TGF-ß expression is upregulated in NSCLC with EGFR mutations through the EGFR-ERK1/2-p90RSK signaling pathway. High TGF-ß expression inhibits the infiltration and anti-tumor function of CD8+ T cells, contributing to the "cold" TME of EGFR-mutated tumors. Blocking TGF-ß can reshape the TME and enhance the therapeutic efficacy of anti-PD-1 in EGFR-mutated tumors, which provides a potential combination immunotherapy strategy for advanced NSCLC patients with EGFR mutations.

Ground layer adaptive optics (GLAO) has been widely employed in wide-field observations with ground-based telescopes. However, the present evaluation of GLAO performance lacks a criterion in terms of turbulence layer correction. This deficiency results in a significant gap in understanding the effectiveness of GLAO correction at different heights of the turbulence layer, thereby hindering the optimization of GLAO system performance. To bridge this gap, this Letter introduces a new, to the best of our knowledge, performance criterion for GLAO, termed layer correction efficiency (LCE). This criterion is formulated to quantify the effective compensation of the GLAO system for a specific altitude layer of turbulence, providing support for the further enhancement of GLAO performance. The simulation results indicate that the LCE has high applicability in GLAO performance analysis.

Regulation of mRNA translation is essential for brain development and function. Translation elongation factor eEF2 acts as a molecular hub orchestrating various synaptic signals to protein synthesis control and participates in hippocampus-dependent cognitive functions. However, whether eEF2 regulates other behaviors in different brain regions has been unknown. Here, we construct a line of Eef2 heterozygous (HET) mice, which show a reduction in eEF2 and protein synthesis mainly in excitatory neurons of the prefrontal cortex. The mice also show lower spine density, reduced excitability, and AMPAR-mediated synaptic transmission in pyramidal neurons of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). While HET mice exhibit normal learning and memory, they show defective social behavior and elevated anxiety. Knockdown of Eef2 in excitatory neurons of the mPFC specifically is sufficient to impair social novelty preference. Either chemogenetic activation of excitatory neurons in the mPFC or mPFC local infusion of the AMPAR potentiator PF-4778574 corrects the social novelty deficit of HET mice. Collectively, we identify a novel role for eEF2 in promoting prefrontal AMPAR-mediated synaptic transmission underlying social novelty behavior.

BACKGROUND: To further clarify the acne profile of Chinese adult women, we included 1,156,703 adult women. An artificial intelligence algorithm was used to analyze images taken by high-resolution mobile phones to further explore acne levels in Chinese adult women. METHOD: In this study, we assessed the severity of acne by evaluating patients' selfies through a smartphone application. Furthermore, we gathered basic user information through a questionnaire, including details such as age, gender, skin sensitivity, and dietary habits. RESULTS: This study showed a gradual decrease in acne severity from the age of 25 years. A trough was reached between the ages of 40 and 44, followed by a gradual increase in acne severity. In terms of skin problems and acne severity, we have found that oily skin, hypersensitive skin, frequent makeup application and unhealthy dietary habits can affect the severity of acne. For environment and acne severity, we observed that developed city levels, cold seasons and high altitude and strong radiation affect acne severity in adult women. For the results of the AI analyses, the severity of blackheads, pores, dark circles and skin roughness were positively associated with acne severity in adult women. CONCLUSIONS: AI analysis of high-res phone images in Chinese adult women reveals acne severity trends. Severity decreases after 25, hits a low at 40-44, then gradually rises. Skin type, sensitivity, makeup, diet, urbanization, seasons, altitude, and radiation impact acne. Blackheads, pores, dark circles, and skin roughness are linked to acne severity. These findings inform personalized skincare and public health strategies for adult women.

Unlike other epithelial cancer types, circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are less frequently detected in the peripheral blood of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients using epithelial marker-based detection approaches despite the aggressive nature of NSCLC. Here, we demonstrate hexokinase-2 (HK2) as a metabolic function-associated marker for the detection of CTCs. In 59 NSCLC patients bearing cytokeratin-positive (CKpos) primary tumors, HK2 enables resolving cytokeratin-negative (HK2high/CKneg) CTCs as a prevalent population in about half of the peripheral blood samples with positive CTC counts. However, HK2high/CKneg tumor cells are a minority population in pleural effusions and cerebrospinal fluids. Single-cell analysis shows that HK2high/CKneg CTCs exhibit smaller sizes but consistent copy number variation profiles compared with CKpos counterparts. Single-cell transcriptome profiling reveals that CK expression levels of CTCs are independent of their epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) status, challenging the long-standing association between CK expression and EMT. HK2high/CKneg CTCs display metastasis and EGFR inhibitor resistance-related molecular signatures and are selectively enriched in patients with EGFRL858R driver oncogene mutation as opposed to EGFR19Del , which is more frequently found in patients with prevalent CKpos CTCs in the blood. Consistently, treatment-naïve patients with a larger number or proportion of HK2high/CKneg CTCs in the blood exhibit poor therapy response and shorter progression-free survival. Collectively, our approach resolves a more complete spectrum of CTCs in NSCLC that can potentially be exploited to identify patient prognosis before therapy.

This review aims to assess the efficacy and safety of laser therapy in managing scars resulting from cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) repair surgeries, as well as to determine the optimal timing for intervention. A systematic search was conducted across four databases using a predefined search strategy. Studies included were randomized controlled trials, non-randomized studies, and case series focusing on laser therapy for CL/P scars. Data extraction and analysis were performed using Revman Software. A total of two randomized controlled trials, four non-randomized studies, and three case series were included in the analysis. The fractional CO2 laser was the most commonly utilized type of laser. Following laser therapy, there was a significant decrease in Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) scores by 4.05 (95% CI, 2.10-5.99). Meta-analysis revealed that laser treatment groups exhibited a significantly lower mean VSS score (1.3; 95% CI, 0.02-2.67) compared to control groups. Moreover, initiating laser therapy intervention at one month postoperatively resulted in a significantly lower VSS score compared to initiation at three months postoperatively (difference of 1.70; 95% CI, 1.33-2.08). No severe complications were reported. Laser therapy demonstrates effectiveness and safety in improving CL/P scars, with earlier intervention yielding greater benefits.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of surgical and nonsurgical interventions are available in the field of female genital plastic surgery. The rate of female genital plastic surgery has increased by nearly 220 percent over the past 5 years. Despite several studies on the topic, no relevant bibliometric analysis has been conducted. METHODS: We searched the Web of Science Core Collection for articles related to female genital plastic surgery. CiteSpace 6.1.R2 (Drexel University, USA) and VOSviewer 1.6.10.0 (Leiden University, the Netherlands) were used, and national distribution, institutions, journals, authors, and key words were analyzed and calculated. RESULTS: From 2003 to 2022, 1299 papers in the field of female genital plastic surgery were retrieved. There were more articles produced in the United States, and there were also two institutions in the Netherlands that were highly productive. A wide and close relationship has been established between researchers and institutions conducting female genital plastic surgery. Professor Bouman MB published the most articles on female genital plastic surgery in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. Female genital plastic surgery dominated the top 10 references with the highest local citation score. There were four clusters of key words with the most citations, and the most recently trending key words were "vaginal agenesis," "transgender," and "congenital adrenal hyperplasia." CONCLUSIONS: The purpose of this article is to provide a summary of the current research status focusing on female genital plastic surgery. It is hoped that more efforts will be made to promote the development of female genital plastic surgery in the future.

Localised scleroderma predominantly affects the skin with an unknown aetiology. Despite its clinical importance, no comprehensive bibliometric analysis has been conducted to assess the existing research landscape and future prospects for localised scleroderma. The articles related to localised scleroderma were retrieved from the WoSCC database and analysed by VOSviewer 1.6.10.0 (Leiden University, Netherlands), CiteSpace 6.1.R1 (Dreiser University, USA), and HistCite 2.1 (New York, United States). 2049 research papers pertaining to localised scleroderma spanning the years from 1993 to 2022 were extracted from the WoSCC database. The United States exhibited the highest productivity with 644 papers, accounting for 31.43% of the total output, followed by Germany with 206 papers (10.05%) and Italy with 200 papers (9.76%). Regarding academic institutions and journals, the University of Texas System and Dermatology published the most significant number of papers, and Professor Ihn, H emerged as the most prolific contributor among scholars. The top 10 cited references primarily concentrated on the diagnosis and treatment of localised scleroderma. "Phototherapy" and "methotrexate (MTX)" surfaced as the most recent and noteworthy keywords, representing the research hotspots in the domain of localised scleroderma. This bibliometric analysis furnishes valuable insights into the contemporary research landscape of localised scleroderma.

EphB6 belongs to the receptor tyrosine kinase, whose low expression is associated with shorter survival of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. But the role and mechanism of EphB6 in the progression of CRC need further study. In addition, EphB6 was mainly expressed in intestinal neurons. But how EphB6 is involved in functions of intestinal neurons has not been known. In our study, we constructed a mouse xenograft model of CRC by injecting CMT93 cells into the rectum of EphB6-deficient mice. We found that the deletion of EphB6 in mice promoted tumor growth of CMT93 cells in a xenograft model of CRC, which was independent of changes in the gut microbiota. Interestingly, inhibition of intestinal neurons by injecting botulinum toxin A into rectum of EphB6-deficient mice could eliminate the promotive effect of EphB6 deficiency on tumor growth in the xenograft model of CRC. Mechanically, the deletion of EphB6 in mice promoted the tumor growth in CRC by increasing GABA in the tumor microenvironment. Furthermore, EphB6 deficiency in mice increased the expression of synaptosomal-associated protein 25 in the intestinal myenteric plexus, which mediated the release of GABA. Our study concluded that EphB6 knockout in mice promotes tumor growth of CMT93 cells in a xenograft model of CRC by modulating GABA release. Our study found a new regulating mechanism of EphB6 on the tumor progression in CRC that is dependent on intestinal neurons.

BACKGROUND: Neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy treatment (NCIT) has achieved great success for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC); however, the intrinsic mechanism underlying this treatment remains unclear. METHODS: Thirty-two patients with stage IIA-IIIC NSCLC who underwent surgery after NCIT were included in this retrospective study. Multiplex immunofluorescence (mIF) staining and image analysis assays were performed on the samples collected before and after NCIT for each patient. RNA analyses was applied to confirm the mIF results. RESULTS: Among the enrolled patients, 14 achieved major pathological response or pathological complete response (pCR) and were defined as the 'response' group, whereas 18 patients did not respond well to NCIT and were defined as the 'nonresponse' group. The results of the mIF assays revealed an overall increase in tumor immune lymphocytes (TILs) after NCIT in the stroma area (p = 0.03) rather than the tumor area (p = 0.86). The percentage of CD8+ T cells and tertiary lymphoid structure counts in both the response and nonresponse groups increased significantly after NCIT compared with before NCIT. CD3+ T cells and FOXP3+ cells decreased significantly in the response group but remained unchanged or increased in the nonresponse group. A comparison of the response and nonresponse groups showed that CD3, FOXP3+ and CD8+/PD-1+ cells before NCIT may serve as predictors of the response to neoadjuvant immunotherapy. The RNA analyses confirmed the mIF results that TILs were elevated after NCIT. CONCLUSIONS: The infiltration of immune cells before NCIT was correlated with pathologic complete response, which enhanced the TILs as a promising predictor for selecting patients who were more likely to benefit from NCIT.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a monogenic disorder that affects 100,000 African Americans and millions of people worldwide. Intra-erythrocytic polymerization of sickle hemoglobin (HbS) promotes erythrocyte sickling, impaired rheology, ischemia and hemolysis, leading to the development of progressive liver injury in SCD. Liver resident macrophages and monocytes are known to enable the clearance of HbS, however, the role of liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) in HbS clearance and liver injury in SCD remains unknown. Using real-time intravital (in vivo) imaging in the mice liver as well as flow cytometric analysis and confocal imaging of primary human LSECs, we show for the first time that liver injury in SCD is associated with accumulation of HbS and iron in the LSECs, leading to LSEC senescence. Hb uptake by LSECs was mediated by micropinocytosis. Hepatic monocytes were observed to attenuate LSECsenescence by accelerating HbS clearance in the liver of SCD mice, however, this protection was impaired in P-selectin-deficient SCD mice secondary to reduced monocyte recruitment in the liver. These findings are the first to suggest that LSECs contribute to HbS clearance and HbS induced LSEC-senescence promotes progressive liver injury in SCD mice. Our results provide a novel insight into the pathogenesis of hemolysis induced chronic liver injury in SCD caused by LSEC senescence. Identifying the regulators of LSEC mediated HbS clearance may lead to new therapies to prevent the progression of liver injury in SCD.

BACKGROUND: To better compare the progression of dark circles and the aging process in Chinese skin. A total of 100 589 Chinese males and 1 838 997 Chinese females aged 18 to 85, without facial skin conditions, and who had access to a smartphone with a high-resolution camera all took selfies. METHOD: Using a smartphone application with a built-in artificial intelligence algorithm, facial skin diagnostic evaluated the selfies and score the severity of the dark circles with four other facial indicators (including skin type, Pores, Acne vulgaris, and Blackheads). Basic information was collected with online questionnaire, including their age, gender, skin sensitivity, and dietary habits. RESULTS: In users between the age of 18 and 59, the prevalence of comprehensive, pigmented, and structural type of dark circles all rose with age. However, between the age of 60 and 85, the intensity of all types of dark circles diminished. Besides, vascular dark circles progressively worsen from the age of 18 to their peak at 39, and then gradually decline with age. Females typically have more pronounced black circles under their eyes than males in China. Bad eating habits, urbanization, regular cosmetics use, and sensitive skin positively correlate with severe dark circles. Vascular, comprehensive dark circles were worse in spring. Both pigmented and structural dark circles were worse in the summer. The results indicated that the intensity of dark circles was influenced by oily skin, wide pores, severe blackheads, and severe acne. CONCLUSIONS: Chinese men and women differed noticeably in the prevalence of each face aging indicator and the appearance of aging dark circles. Selfies could be automatically graded and examined by artificial intelligence, which is a quick and private method for quantifying signs of facial aging and identifying major problems for different populations. Artificial intelligence would assist in the development of individualized preventive and therapeutic interventions.

BACKGROUND: Tumor prostheses of the distal femur after revision surgery is associated with high rates of aseptic loosening, which has introduced great challenges to the survival of patients, but only a few studies have evaluated their X-ray imaging. The purpose of this study was to analyze the risk factors for recurrence of aseptic loosening and make recommendations to reduce the incidence of aseptic loosening after revision surgery of tumor prostheses in the distal femur. METHOD: A retrospective analysis was performed on 23 patients who had revision surgery for distal femur prostheses due to aseptic loosening between June 2002 and June 2021. They were divided into two groups based on the condition of the prostheses after revision surgery: loosening group (9 patients) and control group (14 patients). Following the initial replacement, the length and diameter of the prosthetic intramedullary stem were measured through the standard full-length anteroposterior X-ray imaging of both lower limbs. The osteotomy length, femoral length and diameter, femoral intramedullary stem diameter, hip-knee-ankle angle (HKAA), mechanical lateral distal femoral angle (mLDFA), mechanical medial proximal tibial angle (mMPTA), and so on were measured as well. Following that, statistical analysis was performed. RESULTS: Patients in the loosening group had statistically significant differences in the ratio of prostheses length to femur length (71.89 ± 6.62) and the ratio of intramedullary stem diameter to femoral diameter (25.50 ± 6.90) (P < 0.05), when compared to the control group. The HKAA (175.58 ± 2.78), mLDFA (94.42 ± 2.57), and the deviation angle between the lower limb alignment and the tibial prostheses force line (2.23 ± 1.09) in the loosening group were significantly different from those in the control group (P < 0.05) on postoperative radiographs of the entire length of the lower limbs. The lowest score in intramedullary manubrium I indicated less osteolysis, while the highest score in intramedullary manubrium III indicated the most serious osteolysis, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that the use of longer and thicker intramedullary stems can effectively decrease the occurrence of aseptic loosening. Additionally, it is important to avoid using the original prostheses and reconstruct the standard line of lower limb force to further reduce the incidence of aseptic loosening. It is crucial to closely monitor the distal segment of the intramedullary stem for osteolysis after surgery.

To explore the potential relationship between the leading vehicle and the following vehicle during car-following, we proposed a novel car-following model combining a convolutional neural network (CNN) with a long short-term memory (LSTM) network. Firstly, 400 car-following periods were extracted from the natural driving database and the OpenACC car-following experiment database. Then, we developed a CNN-LSTM car-following model, and the CNN is employed to analyze the potential relationship between the vehicle's dynamic parameters and to extract the features of car-following behavior to generate the feature vector. The LSTM network is adopted to save the feature vector and predict the speed of the following vehicle. Finally, the CNN-LSTM model is trained and tested with the extracted car-following trajectories data and compared with the classical car-following models (LSTM model, intelligent driver model). The results show that the accuracy and the ability to learn the heterogeneity of the proposed model are better than the other two. Furthermore, the CNN-LSTM model can accurately reproduce the hysteresis phenomenon of congested traffic flow and apply to heterogeneous traffic flow mixed with adaptive cruise control vehicles on the freeway, which indicates that it has strong generalization ability.

BACKGROUND: Fat grafting is one of the most effective treatments for soft tissue restoration and augmentation. Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) supplementation is one of the foremost concerns to improve its efficiency. There have been several studies aiming at adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells in fat grafting, but no relevant bibliometric research has conducted. METHODS: Articles about fat grafting and ASCs were retrieved in Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). Using VOSviewer 1.6.10.0 (Leiden University, the Netherlands) and CiteSpace 6.1.R2 (Drexel University, USA), the information of national distribution, institutions, journals, authors and keywords were evaluated and calculated. RESULTS: A total of 1166 papers in the field of ASCs in fat grafting were retrieved from 2002 to 2021. The USA produced the most articles, and the top 2 productive institutions were all from the USA. Researchers and institutions conducting ASCs in fat grafting research have shown a widespread and close connection. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery published the most article on ASCs in fat grafting, and professor Rubin Peter is the most productive author. The top 10 references with the highest LCS mainly focused on applying ASCs to assist fat transplantation in plastic surgery. The most cited keywords formed 4 clusters, and "mesenchymal stem," "mesenchymal stromal cell," "stromal vascular fraction" and "long term" were the most recently trending keywords. CONCLUSIONS: This article provides a summary of the current research status focusing on fat grafting and ASCs. More efforts will be made to promote the application of ASCs in fat grafting. In this study, the flavor compounds of Camellia seed oils obtained by four processes were characterized by headspace solid phase microextraction/gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC/MS). A variety of about 76 volatile flavor compounds were identified from all the oil samples. Of the four processing processes, the pressing process can retain a lot of volatile components. Among these, compounds nonanal and 2-undecenal were predominantly in the majority of the samples. Meanwhile, other compounds such as octyl ester formic acid, octanal and 2-nonenal (E), 3-acetyldihydro 2(3H)-furanone, (E)-2-decenal, dihydro-5-penty 2(3H)-furanone, nonanoic acid, and dodecane were also among the most consistently found compounds among the oil samples analyzed. The principal component analysis carried out to categorize the data produced seven clusters of the total oil samples based on the number of flavor compounds obtained in each sample. This categorization would lead to understanding the components which highly contributed to the characteristic volatile flavor and build up the flavor profile of Camellia seed oil.

This study analyzes the impact of circulation types (CTs) on ozone (O3) pollution in Beijing. The easterly high-pressure (SWW) circulation occurred most frequently (30%; 276 day), followed by northwesterly high-pressure (AN) circulation (24.3%; 224 day). The SWW type had the highest O3 anomaly of +17.28 µg/m3, which was caused by excellent photochemical reactions, poor diffusion ability and regional transport. Due to the higher humidity and precipitation in the low-pressure type (C), the O3 increase (+8.02 µg/m3) was less than that in the SWW type. Good diffusion/wet deposition and weak formation ability contributed to O3 decrease in AN (-12.54 µg/m3) and northerly high-pressure (ESN) CTs (-12.26 µg/m3). The intra-area transport of O3 was significant in polluted circulations (SWW- and C-CTs). In addition, higher temperature, radiation and less rainfall also contributed to higher O3 in northern Beijing under the SWW type. For the clean CTs (AN and ESN CTs), precursor amount and intra-area transport played a dominant role in O3 distribution. Under the northeasterly low-pressure CT, better formation conditions and higher precursor amount combined with the intra-area southerly transport to cause higher O3 values in the south than in the north. The higher O3 in the northwestern area under the northeasterly high-pressure type was influenced by weaker titration loss and high O3 concentration in previous day. Annual variation in the CTs contributed up to 86.1% of the annual variation in O3. About 78%-83% of the diurnal variation in O3 resulted from local meteorological factors.

Aging is the most significant risk factor for the majority of chronic diseases, including liver disease. The cellular, molecular, and pathophysiological mechanisms that promote age-induced hepatovascular changes are unknown due to our inability to visualize changes in liver pathophysiology in live mice over time. We performed quantitative liver intravital microscopy (qLIM) in live C57BL/6J mice to investigate the impact of aging on the hepatovascular system over a 24-mo period. qLIM revealed that age-related hepatic alterations include reduced liver sinusoidal blood flow, increased sinusoidal vessel diameter, and loss of small hepatic vessels. The ductular cell structure deteriorates with age, along with altered expression of hepatic junctional proteins. Furthermore, qLIM imaging revealed increased inflammation in the aged liver, which was linked to increased expression of proinflammatory macrophages, hepatic neutrophils, liver sinusoidal endothelial cells, senescent cells, and procoagulants. Finally, we detected elevated NF-κB pathway activity in aged livers. Overall, these findings emphasize the importance of inflammation in age-related hepatic vasculo-epithelial alterations and highlight the utility of qLIM in studying age-related effects in organ pathophysiology.
