Nowadays, the frequent occurrence of food adulteration makes glucose detection particularly important in food safety and quality management. The quality and taste of honey are closely related to the glucose content. However, due to the drawbacks of expensive equipment, complex operating procedures, and time-consuming processes, the application scope of traditional glucose detection methods is limited. Hence, this study developed a photoelectric chemical (PEC) sensor, which is composed of a photoactive material of bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) with titanium dioxide (TiO2) and glucose oxidase (GOD), for simple and rapid detection of glucose. Notably, the composites' absorption prominently increased in the visible light region, and the photo-generated electron-hole pairs were efficiently separated by virtue of the unique nanostructure system, thus playing a crucial role in facilitating PEC activity. In the presence of dissolved oxygen, the photocurrent intensity was enhanced by H2O2 generated from glucose under electro-oxidation specifically catalyzed by GOD fixed on the modified electrode. When the working potential was 0.3 V, the changes of photocurrent response indicated that the PEC enzyme biosensor provides a low detection limit (3.8 µM), and a wide linear range (0.008-8 mM). This method has better selectivity in honey samples and broad application prospects in clinical diagnosis for future.

In this study, we investigated the effects of mammary inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and Staphylococcus aureus (SA) infusions on pregnancy function during early pregnancy in goats. In Experiment 1, pregnant goats were subjected to an intramammary LPS infusion for 1 week from Days 60-66 after natural mating (n = 5), and in Experiment 2, they received intramammary infusions of either saline, LPS, or SA for 1 week from Days 45-51 after natural mating (n = 15). Blood was collected to determine the plasma cytokine, cortisol, 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2α (PGFM), and progesterone levels. Pregnancy length was significantly longer in the LPS-treated group than that for the saline-treated group of experiment 2. Cytokine levels (IL-1ß, IL-8, Tumor necrosis factor-α: TNF-α) after LPS (in both Experiments 1 and 2) and SA (in Experiment 2) infusion were significantly higher compared with those before infusion. In Experiment 2, the SA-infused group showed significantly higher TNF-α concentrations than those in the saline group. Cortisol levels increased in both experiment 1 and 2 after LPS infusion, but not after saline and SA treatments. Furthermore, PGFM levels increased after LPS infusion in Experiment 1. In Experiment 2, LPS- and SA-infused goats showed significantly higher PGFM levels than those in the saline-infused goats. However, the progesterone levels decreased after LPS treatment in Experiment 1. Our results show that intramammary LPS infusion during the early stage of pregnancy in goats induces inflammatory cytokine and stress hormone production, which prolongs the pregnancy period.

Various studies have attempted to improve the milk yield and composition in dairy animals. However, no study has examined the effects of milking at different times on milk yield and composition. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the yield, composition, and antimicrobial components of milk obtained from milking at different times in lactating goats. Eight goats were milked once daily at different times for three consecutive weeks (first week: 06:00 h; second week: 09:00 h; and third week: 12:00 h). The light ranged from 06:30 to 19:00 h. Milk and blood samples were collected once a day during milking time. Milking at 09:00 h resulted in a significantly higher milk yield than that obtained after milking at 06:00 and 12:00 h. Prolactin levels in plasma and the fat, Na+, ß-defensin, and S100A7 (antimicrobial component) levels in milk were the lowest in the 09:00 h milking. These results indicate that milk yield, composition, and antimicrobial components can be affected by milking time, which may be related to the altered concentration of prolactin in the blood. These findings provide a rational basis for achieving maximal milk production with strong immunity by changing to a more effective milking time.

Heat stress has become a widespread concern in the world, which is one of the major environmental stressors and causes substantial economic loss in the rabbit industry. Heat stress leads to multiple damages to the health of rabbits, such as organ damage, oxidative stress, disordered endocrine regulation, suppressed immune function and reproductive disorders, ultimately, induces the decreased production performance and increased mortality. Nutritional approaches, including feeding strategies, adjusting feed formula, and supplementing vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, Chinese herbal medicines, and functional active substances to the feed, were reported to mitigate the detrimental effects of heat stress in rabbits. Therefore, elucidating the damage of heat stress to rabbits; proper management and nutritional approaches should be considered to solve the heat stress issue in rabbits. This review highlights the scientific evidence regarding the effects of heat stress on rabbit's immune function, endocrine, blood biochemical changes, antioxidant capacity and production performance, and the potential mitigation strategies of nutritional intervention to alleviate heat stress in rabbits; which could contribute to develop nutritional strategies in relieving heat stress of rabbits.

Struvite is a chemically bonded ceramic product in the pipeline of a sewage treatment plant. In order to explore the fire extinguishing potential of struvite, a new type of struvite ultrafine dry powder with excellent performance was prepared by a simple process, and its fire extinguishing performance and mechanism were analyzed in depth. Under the same process conditions, the refinement degree (D50 = 5.132 µm) and the specific surface area (BET = 25.72 m2/g) of ultrafine struvite were larger than those of NH4H2PO4 (D50 = 8.961 µm, BET = 13.64 m2/g), making struvite more suitable for fire extinguishing. Besides, the pyrolysis process of struvite was relatively concentrated and absorbed more heat in a short time. Its heat absorption (458.4 J/mg) was higher than that of NH4H2PO4 (156.4 J/mg). Water, ammonia, and PO· were released during the pyrolysis of struvite, which effectively reduced fire temperature, diluted oxygen concentrations and captured free radicals. At the same time, the final products were magnesium orthophosphate and magnesium pyrophosphate, which formed a dense flame-retardant ceramic layer with good thermal insulation and environmental protection functions. In these cases, the fire extinguishing mechanism of struvite was determined to have three stages: the cooling effect, the asphyxiation effect, and the chemical effect. Correspondingly, the fire extinguishing time of struvite was three seconds faster than that of ammonium phosphate under 0.2 MPa based on the local oil basin test.

High-temperature environment-induced heat stress (HS) is a hazard environmental element for animals, leading to dramatic changes in physiological and metabolic function. However, the metabolomic-level mechanisms underlying lipid metabolism in liver of slow-growing broilers are still obscure. The present study investigated the effects of HS on hepatic lipidomics in Chinese indigenous slow-growing broilers (Huaixiang chickens). The study includes two treatments, each treatment had 5 replicates with 4 broilers per cage, where a total of 40 eight-week-old female Huaixiang chickens (average initial body weight of 840.75 ± 20.79 g) were randomly divided into normal temperature (NT) and HS groups for 4 weeks, and the broilers of NT and HS groups were exposed to 21.3 ± 1.2℃ and 32.5 ± 1.4℃ respectively. The relative humidity of the two groups was maintained at 55%-70%. The liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based metabolomics were conducted to evaluate the changes in hepatic lipidomics of broilers. The results showed that there were 12 differential metabolites between the two treatments. Compared with the NT group, HS group reduced the levers of hepatic phosphatidylcholine (PC) (16:0/16:0), PC (16:0/18:2), triglyceride (TG) (16:0/16:1/18:1), TG (18:0/18:1/20:4) (VIP > 1 and p < 0.05), while increased PC (18:1/20:3), PC (18:0/18:1), PC (18:1/18:1), PC (18:0/22:5), dimethyl-phosphatidyl ethanolamine (dMePE) (14:0/18:3), dMePE (18:0/18:1) and dMePE (16:0/20:3) levels (Variable Importance in the Projection; VIP > 1 and p < 0.05). In addition, according to the analysis of metabolic pathway, the pathways of linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, glycerolipid and glycerophospholipid metabolism were involved in the effects of HS on hepatic lipid metabolism of broilers (p < 0.05). In conclusion, HS altered the hepatic lipid metabolism mainly through linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, glycerolipid and glycerophospholipid metabolism pathway in indigenous broilers. These findings provided novel insights into the role of HS on hepatic lipidomics in Chinese indigenous broiler chickens.

This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of dietary algae-derived polysaccharides (ADP) from Enteromorpha prolifera against heat stress (HS)-induced bursa of Fabricius injure in broilers, and to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the protective effect. A total of 144 8-week-old male yellow-feathered broilers were randomly allocated into 3 treatments of 6 replicates each (8 broilers per replicate): thermoneutral zone group (TN, fed basal diet); heat stress group (HS, fed basal diet); heat stress + ADP group (HSA, basal diet supplemented with 1,000 mg/kg ADP). Broilers in TN group were raised at 23.6 ± 1.8°C during the whole study. Broilers in HS and HSA groups were exposed to 33.2 ± 1.5°C for 10 h/day. The experimental period lasted for four weeks. The results showed that HS and dietary ADP had no significant effects on bursa of Fabricius index (P > 0.05). HS exposure increased the apoptosis rate of bursa of Fabricius (P < 0.05), and the apoptosis rate was reduced by dietary ADP (P < 0.05). Besides, broilers in HS and HSA groups had a lower glutathione-S transferase (GST) activity and total anti-oxidation capacity (T-AOC), whereas had a higher malondialdehyde (MDA) levels of bursa of Fabricius than those in TN group (P < 0.05). HS exposure elevated the concentration of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-4, and IL-6, while decreased the concentration of interferon-γ (INF-γ) and IL-2 (P < 0.05), and dietary inclusion of ADP reduced the IL-1ß level and increased the IL-2 level of bursa of Fabricius (P < 0.05). Compared with TN group, broilers in HS and HSA groups had lower relative mRNA expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and GSTT1 in bursa of Fabricius (P < 0.05). Additionally, HS exposure down-regulated the mRNA expression of inhibitor kappa B alpha (IκBα), IFN-γ, and IL-2, while up-regulated the mRNA expression of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) p65, TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6 in bursa of Fabricius (P < 0.05). However, dietary inclusion of ADP up-regulated the mRNA expression of IκBα and down-regulated the mRNA expression of NF-κB p65, TNF-α, and IL-6 in bursa of Fabricius (P < 0.05). Furthermore, HS exposure increased the relative protein expression levels of total and nuclear NF-κB p65 (P < 0.05), but dietary ADP supplementation reduced the relative protein expression levels of total and nuclear NF-κB p65 in bursa of Fabricius (P < 0.05). Collectively, dietary ADP ameliorated the impairment of histology, cell apoptosis and immune balance in bursa of Fabricius of heat stressed broilers, which is involved in modulation of NF-κB signaling pathway.
