RESUMEN
OBJECTIVE: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a common malignancy with a poor prognosis. This study aimed to determine the influence and underlying mechanisms of CLSPN on OSCC. METHODS: CLSPN expression was tested using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, immunohistochemistry, and western blotting. Flow cytometry, cell counting kit, and colony formation assays were performed to determine OSCC cell apoptosis, viability, and proliferation, respectively. In OSCC cells, the extracellular acidification rate (ECAR), oxygen consumption rate (OCR), glucose uptake, and lactate production were determined using the corresponding kits. Changes in the protein levels of HK2, PKM2, LDHA, Wnt3a, and ß-catenin were assessed using western blotting. RESULTS: CLSPN expression was increased in OSCC tissues. Overexpression of CLSPN in HSC-2 cells promoted cell proliferation, increased the levels of ECAR, glucose uptake, and lactate production, and increased the protein levels of HK2, PKM2, LDHA, Wnt3a, and ß-catenin, but inhibited OCR levels and apoptosis. The knockdown of CLSPN in CAL27 cells resulted in the opposite results. Moreover, the effects of CLSPN overexpression on glycolysis and OSCC cell proliferation were reversed by Wnt3a knockdown. In vivo, knockdown of CLSPN restrained tumor growth, glycolysis, and the activation of Wnt/ß-catenin signaling. CONCLUSION: CLSPN promoted glycolysis and OSCC cell proliferation, and reduced apoptosis, which was achieved by the activation of Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway.

We report the synthesis, crystal structure, and physical properties of a novel ternary compound, Th2Cu4As5. The material crystallizes in a tetragonal structure with lattice parameters a = 4.0639(3) Å and c = 24.8221(17) Å. Its structure can be described as an alternating stacking of fluorite-type Th2As2 layers with antifluorite-type double-layered Cu4As3 slabs. The measurement of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat reveals that Th2Cu4As5 undergoes bulk superconducting transition at 4.2 K. Additionally, all these physical quantities exhibit anomalies at 48 K, accompanied by a sign change in the Hall coefficient, suggesting a charge-density-wave-like (CDW) phase transition. Drawing from both experimental data and band calculations, we propose that the superconducting and CDW-like phase transitions are, respectively, associated with the Cu4As3 slabs and the As plane in the Th2As2 layers.
RESUMEN
OBJECTIVES: Central nervous system (CNS) infections caused by carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (CR-GNB) present a major health and economic burden worldwide. This multicentre prospective study aimed to assess the feasibility and usefulness of CSF therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) after intrathecal/intraventricular administration of polymyxin B in patients with CNS infections. METHODS: Forty-two patients treated with intrathecal/intraventricular administration of polymyxin B against CR-GNB-induced CNS infections were enrolled. CSF trough level (Cmin) was collected beginning on Day 2 post-polymyxin B initiation and thereafter. The primary outcomes were clinical cure and 28-day all-cause mortality. RESULTS: All patients started with intrathecal/intraventricular administration of polymyxin B at a dose of 5 g/day, corresponding to a median CSF Cmin of 2.93 mg/L (range, 0.21-25.74 mg/L). Clinical cure was 71.4%, and the median CSF Cmin of this group was higher than that of clinical failure group [3.31 (IQR, 1.73-5.62) mg/L versus 2.25 (IQR, 1.09-4.12) mg/L; Pâ=â0.011]. In addition, with MICsâ≤â0.5 mg/L, maintaining polymyxin B CSF Cmin above 2.0 mg/L showed a higher clinical cure rate (Pâ=â0.041). The 28-day all-cause mortality rate was 31.0% and had no association with CSF Cmin. CONCLUSIONS: After intrathecal/intraventricular administration of polymyxin B, CSF concentrations fluctuated considerably inter- and intra-individual. Polymyxin B CSF Cmin above 2.0 mg/L was associated with clinical cure when MICs wereâ≤â0.5 mg/L, and the feasibility of TDM warrants additional clinical studies.

A quaternary compound, ThCr2Si2C, was synthesized by using the arc-melting technique. The compound adopts a tetragonal CeCr2Si2C-type crystal structure. The electronic resistivity and specific heat data exhibit metallic behavior, while the magnetic susceptibility displays a pronounced broad peak at around 370 K, indicating the antiferromagnetic phase transition. The first-principles calculations suggest A-type antiferromagnetic ordering of the Cr sublattice, which is confirmed by neutron diffraction experiments. By comparing the crystal structure of ThCr2Si2C with the isostructural Cr-based compounds, the magnetic state of Cr 3d orbital is discussed in terms of the band-filling effects and indirect spin exchange interaction.
RESUMEN
The Beijing Healthy Aging Cohort Study (BHACS) was established to supplement the limited data of a large representative cohort of older people based on the general population and was designed to evaluate the prevalence, incidence, and natural history of cognitive decline, functional disability, and conventional vascular risk factors. The aim was to determine the evolution of these conditions by estimating the rates and determinants of progression and regression to adverse outcomes, including dementia, cardiovascular events, cancer, and all-cause death. It can therefore provide evidence to help policy makers develop better policies to promote healthy aging in China. BHACS consisted of three cohorts (BLSA, CCHS-Beijing, and BECHCS) in Beijing with a total population of 11 235 (6281 in urban and 4954 in rural areas) and an age range of 55 years or older (55-101 years) with a mean age of 70.35 ± 7.71 years (70.69 ± 7.62 years in urban and 69.92 ± 7.80 years in rural areas). BHACS-BLSA conducted the baseline survey in 2009 with a multistage stratification-random clustering procedure for people aged 55 years or older; BHACS-CCHS-Beijing conducted the baseline survey in 2013-2015 with a stratified multistage cluster random sampling method for people aged 55 years or older; and BHACS-BECHCS conducted the baseline survey in 2010-2014 with two-stage cluster random sampling method for people aged 60 years or older. Data were collected through questionnaires, physical measurements, and laboratory analyses. Topics covered by BHACS include a wide range of physical and mental health indicators, lifestyles and personal, family, and socio-economic determinants of health. There are no immediate plans to make the cohort data freely available to the public, but specific proposals for further collaboration are welcome. BACKGROUND: Foam sclerotherapy is an effective treatment for varicose veins and venous malformations, with its efficacy influenced by foam stability. The methods for preparing physician-compounded foam (PCF) are the double syringe system (DSS) and Tessari method. Few studies have been performed to compare the PCF stability produced by the 2 methods and their mechanisms. We aim to compare the stability of PCF produced by 2 two methods in the same connector and explore the reasons for the difference. METHODS: Foam was generated by the 2 methods under different circumstances. In the Tessari method, 2 syringes were connected at right angles (90°) by a 3-way tap. In the DSS method, 2 syringes were connected by the same 3-way tap in a straight line (180°). The stability and uniformity of foam produced by the 2 methods were compared using foam half-time and optical microscopy, respectively. Assuming that the difference in foam stability between the 2 methods was related to the angles of a connector, we compared the foam stability when 2 syringes were connected with a plastic connector bent to different angles. RESULTS: The DSS method could produce more uniform foam with longer foam half-time than the Tessari method, which was related to the angle of the connector. CONCLUSIONS: The stability of PCF is influenced by the angle of the connector.

PURPOSE: Complications such as explosive choroidal hemorrhage, residual cortex, and capsule rupture often occur during intraocular surgery combined with penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) due to poor maintenance of the anterior chamber. To address these challenges, we have innovatively utilized a sterile polyethylene instrument cover to temporarily reconstruct the anterior chamber. METHODS: In this report, we describe a technique where a 'temporary corneal patch' was created from a sterile instrument cover, using a trephine to ensure a diameter approximately 1-2 mm wider than the corneal bed or perforation. This patch was then sutured into the host corneal bed or the perforation with 10-0 nylon sutures during intraocular surgery combined with PKP. Each case was evaluated for surgical efficacy and complications. RESULTS: We successfully applied this technique in three cases of combined corneal transplantation surgery. In two cases, PKP, phacoemulsification, and intraocular lens implantation were successfully performed. In the third case, PKP, vitrectomy, and other intraocular procedures were performed. No intraoperative or postoperative complications were observed. CONCLUSION: The use of a sterile polyethylene material as a temporary corneal patch for anterior chamber reconstruction represents a safe, effective, and cost-efficient approach for intraocular surgery combined with PKP or posterior segment surgery as a keratoprosthesis.
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: The Tessari method is commonly used in sclerotherapy for producing foam, involving 2 syringes pushed back and forth 20 times with the use of a 3-way connector. Many factors affect the foam stability which is crucial for clinical efficacy. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the optimal pushing rate which may impact the foam stability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Polidocanol (POL) solution (1% and 3%) was used to make sclerosant foam via the Tessari method, with a total of 20 pushes performed at different time durations: 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 seconds. The foam stability was recorded using foam half-life time (FHT), and the pushing pressure to the syringe was recorded using a self-made electric device. Both FHT and the pressure among different groups were compared respectively. RESULTS: The FHT was decreased as pushing duration exceeding 20 seconds in POL 1% and 15 seconds in POL 3%. Both the highest FHT and pressure point were located in the 10-second group. CONCLUSION: It is recommended to complete 20 back-and-forth passages within 10 seconds to create stable foam.

Oleylamine/oleic acid (OAm/OA) as the commonly used ligand is indispensable in the synthesis of perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs). Unfortunately, poor colloidal stability and unsatisfactory photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) are observed, resulting from a highly dynamic binding nature between ligands. Herein, we adopt a facile hybrid ligand (DDAB/ZnBr2) passivation strategy to reconstruct the surface chemistry of CsPbBr3 NCs. The hybrid ligand can detach the native surface ligand, in which the acid-base reactions between ligands are suppressed effectively. Also, they can substitute the loose capping ligand, anchor to the surface firmly, and supply sufficient halogens to passivate the surface trap, realizing an exceptional PLQY of 95% and an enhanced tolerance toward ambient storage, UV irradiation, anti-solvents, and thermal treatment. Besides, the as-fabricated white light-emitting diode (WLED) utilizing the PNCs as the green-emitting phosphor has a luminous efficiency around 73 lm/W; the color gamut covers 125% of the NTSC standard.
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: The appropriate administration regimen of polymyxin B is yet controversial. The present study aimed to explore the optimal dose of polymyxin B under therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) guidance. METHODS: In China's Henan province, 26 hospitals participated in a randomized controlled trial. We included patients with sepsis caused by carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (CR-GNB) susceptible to polymyxin B. The patients were randomly divided into a high-dose (HD) group or a low-dose (LD) group and received 150 mg loading dose, 75 mg every 12 h and 100 mg loading dose, 50 mg every 12 h, respectively. TDM was employed to determine if the dose of polymyxin B needs adjustment based on the area under the concentration-time curve across 24 h at a steady state (ssAUC0-24) of 50-100 mg h/L. The primary outcome was the 14-day clinical response, and the secondary outcomes included 28- and 14-day mortality. RESULTS: This trial included 311 patients, with 152 assigned to the HD group and 159 assigned to the LD group. Intention-to-treat analysis showed that the 14-day clinical response was non-significant (p = 0.527): 95/152 (62.5%) in the HD group and 95/159 (59.7%) in the LD group. Kaplan-Meier's 180-day survival curve showed survival advantage in the HD group than in the LD group (p = 0.037). More patients achieved the target ssAUC0-24 in the HD than in the LD group (63.8% vs. 38.9%; p = 0.005) and in the septic shock subgroup compared to all subjects (HD group: 71.4% vs. 63.8%, p = 0.037; LD group: 58.3% vs. 38.9%, p = 0.0005). Also, the target AUC compliance was not correlated with clinical outcomes but with acute kidney injury (AKI) (p = 0.019). Adverse events did not differ between the HD and LD groups. CONCLUSION: A fixed polymyxin B loading dose of 150 mg and a maintenance dose of 75 mg every 12 h was safe for patients with sepsis caused by CR-GNB and improves long-term survival. The increased AUC was associated with increased incidence of AKI, and TDM results were valued to prevent AKI. Nanoribbon construction and modification with functional groups are important methods to improve the performance of photocatalysts. In this paper, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are applied to assess the electron absorption capacity of different model structures in the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), i.e., melon-based carbon nitride nanoribbons (MNRs) and edge-modified melon-based carbon nitride nanoribbons (X-MNRs, X = NO2, CF3, CN, CHO, F, Cl, CîCH, OH, SH, CH3, and H). It is found that X-MNRs (X = NO2, CN, CHO, CCH, OH, and H) have a significantly reduced band gap. Meanwhile, the VBM and CBM are effectively separated with the same optical absorption wavelength range, agreeing with the experimental observations. More importantly, the Gibbs free energy difference of the CO2RR rate-determining step is greatly reduced in MNRs, CHO-MNRs, CN-MNRs etc. with the formation of CO or HCOOH. The mechanism investigation indicates that the materials design via edge-group modification can optimize the CO2RR process.
RESUMEN
Mood disorders (MD) are often associated with a higher incidence of suicidal behavior, especially in adolescent patients. However, the mechanisms by which depression affects suicide attempts in adolescents with MD remain poorly elucidated. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the incidence, risk factors, and clinical correlates of suicide attempts in Chinese adolescent patients with MD, as well as the inter-relationship between depressive symptoms, rumination, and suicide attempts, and the role of rumination in mediating depression and suicide attempts. A total of 331 MD adolescent patients aged 11 ~ 18 years were recruited from a psychiatric hospital. Suicide attempts were assessed with the MINI Suicide Scale. Depressed symptoms were measured with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). To assess rumination, we used the 21-item Chinese version of the Ruminative Responses Scale (RRS). Overall, the percentage of suicide attempts among MD adolescents was 51.96%, with a higher percentage of females (58.62%) than males (36.36%). Compared to non-suicide attempters, suicide attempters had higher scores on PHQ-9, RRS, depression-related, brooding, and reflective pondering. Gender and RRS were independently associated with suicide attempts. Rumination played a fully mediating role between depression and suicide attempts. In addition, the mediating effect of depression between rumination and suicide attempts was not significant. The incidence of suicide attempts was higher in MD adolescents than in general adolescents. Gender and rumination were associated with suicide attempts in MD adolescents. Moreover, rumination mediated the correlation between depressive symptoms and suicide attempts, suggesting that rumination may be an important intervention component for clinical staff to prevent suicidal behavior in adolescents with MD.

PURPOSE: To assess the effectiveness and safety of continuous lavage with 1% voriconazole (CL) for moderate and severe fungal keratitis. METHODS: Thirty-one patients were randomized to receive topical eye drops either alone (T) or combined with continuous 1% voriconazole lavage (CL-T). The primary outcome was the cure rate at 3 months. The secondary outcomes were the 6-day efficacy, 3-day infiltration size and depth, hypopyon height, central corneal thickness (CCT), epithelial defect size, and subject feelings and clinical signs assessment scores. RESULTS: At 3 months, the cure rate was comparable between the groups in patients with moderate fungal keratitis (66.7% vs. 62.5%, P = 0.60). However, among severe cases, 4 cases (44.4%) in the CL-T group healed successfully, while none in the T group; this difference was not significant (P = 0.08), although it was very close to 0.05. This may be related to the small sample size. After 6 days, the percentage of patients with "worsened" ulcers in the CL-T group was lower than that in the T group (0% vs. 31%, P = 0.043). The infiltration size, infiltration depth, and hypopyon height in the CL-T group were smaller than those in the T group after 3 days (all P < 0.05). There was no difference in CCT, epithelial defect size, subject feelings scores, or clinical signs scores between groups. CONCLUSION: These outcomes suggest that CL is an effective and safe adjuvant method for controlling the progression of moderate and severe fungal keratitis. PURPOSE: To describe a "magnetic conduction" technique for the removal of metallic intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) in the posterior segment combined with cataract extraction and pars plana vitrectomy and to report its outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 42 eyes of 42 patients with posterior metallic IOFBs between April 2020 and February 2022. In all patients, cataract extraction was combined with pars plana vitrectomy. With an external magnet, the IOFBs were captured by a magnetized vitrectomy cutter, delivered to the anterior chamber, and then extracted through a corneal phacoemulsification incision. RESULTS: All patients were men, with a mean age of 45.6 ± 10.7 years. The mean size of the IOFBs was 3.5 ± 1.7 mm (range, 1.5-8.9 mm) in their longest dimension. A final best-corrected visual acuity of 20/200 or better was noted in 24 of 42 patients (57.1%). Postoperatively, recurrent retinal detachment was seen in three eyes. There were no other intraoperative or postoperative complications. CONCLUSION: The "magnetic conduction" technique combined with phacovitrectomy is a safe and feasible approach to removing IOFBs in the posterior segment.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease has become the leading cause of death worldwide, but there is a lack of data on whether cardiovascular health (CVH) is associated with elderly mortality in China. We investigated the relationship between the ideal CVH score of Chinese elderly and the all-cause mortality. METHODS: The Beijing Elderly Comprehensive Health Cohort Study included a total of 4,499 participants aged 60 years and above. The CVH metric was calculated at baseline and had a score ranging from 0 to 12. The relationship of CVH metrics with all-cause mortality was investigated using Cox proportional hazard regression analysis. The robustness of results was tested using subgroup and sensitivity analysis. RESULTS: The median CVH score among participants was 8.00 (2.00), with only 8.0% scoring 11-12 points. 667 deaths were observed during an average follow-up time of 8.2 years. Participants with a CVH score of 11-12 had a decreased risk of all-cause mortality when compared to those with a CVH score of 0-4(HR = 0.584, 95% CI: 0.373-0.913). Participants had a 7.5% lower risk of all-cause death with each unit higher CVH score (HR = 0.925, 95%CI: 0.885-0.967) with a linearly decreasing trend (P nonlinear = 0.575). The relationships were greater in younger elderly people and stroke patients (P interaction = 0.011 and 0.037. respectively). The consistency of significant trends in sensitivity analysis shows the robustness of association (P trend < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Among the Chinese elderly, there was a linear relationship between improving CVH scores and a lower risk of all-cause mortality. Because of the enormous benefits brought by one point, strategies are essential for improving cardiovascular health attainment. INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of hematologic parameters in young patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO). METHODS: All participants underwent routine ocular examinations and blood sample tests. Hematologic parameters obtained from a complete blood count, as well as the calculation of specific inflammatory indices, were compared between young patients with RVO and the control subjects. Correlations between hematologic inflammatory biomarkers and aqueous humor inflammatory cytokines were also investigated. RESULTS: A total of 64 patients with RVO and 64 age- and gender-matched control subjects were included in this study. The white blood cell count, neutrophil cell count, mean platelet volume (MPV), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), and systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) in young patients with RVO were significantly higher than in the controls (all p < 0.05). Compared to patients with nonischemic RVO, patients with ischemic RVO had higher NLR, SII, and SIRI values (p = 0.032, p = 0.035, and p = 0.039, respectively). The areas under the receiver operator characteristic curve were 0.725, 0.651, 0.649, and 0.634 for the MPV, NLR, SII, and SIRI, respectively. In addition, a higher NLR was related to higher levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6; p = 0.046, R = 0.463), and a higher SII was related to higher levels of IL-6 (p = 0.034, R = 0.488) and vascular endothelial growth factor (p = 0.020, R = 0.528). CONCLUSION: The NLR, SII, and SIRI were significantly elevated in young patients with RVO, especially in young patients with ischemic RVO. NLR and SII were positively correlated with IL-6 levels in aqueous humor, which indicated that systemic inflammation plays an important role in the onset of RVO in young patients.

Despite substantial progress in porous materials over past years, controllable preparation of conductive polymers (CPs) with continuous large pores is challenging, which are important for diverse applications, including energy storage, electrocatalysis, and biological separations. Here, we develop an unprecedented ordered bicontinuous mesoporous PPy cubosomes (mPPy-cs) using a soft-template strategy, resulting in ultralarge pores of â¼45 nm and high specific surface area of 69.5 m2 g-1. Along with their unique characteristics of adjustable surface charges and sensitivity to pH, mPPy-cs exhibited a near quantitative adsorption of albumin within 30 min, enabling efficient separation from immunoglobulin G, a typical inclusion in commercial albumin products. Moreover, the absorbed albumin could be further released in a controlled manner by lowering the pH. This work provides a feasible strategy for bottom-up construction of CPs with tailored pore sizes and nanoarchitectures, expected to attract significant attention to their properties and applications.

BACKGROUND: Evidence supports therapeutic drug monitoring of polymyxin B, but clinical data for establishing an area under the concentration-time curve across 24 h at steady state (AUCss,24 h) threshold are still limited. This study aimed to examine exposure-response/toxicity relationship for polymyxin B to establish an AUCss,24 h threshold in a real-world cohort of patients. METHODS: Using a validated Bayesian approach to estimate AUCss,24 h from two samples, AUCss,24 h threshold that impacted the risk of polymyxin B-related nephrotoxicity and clinical response were derived by classification and regression tree (CART) analysis and validated by Cox regression analysis and logical regression analysis. RESULTS: A total of 393 patients were included; acute kidney injury (AKI) was 29.0%, clinical response was 63.4%, and 30-day all-cause mortality was 35.4%. AUCss,24 h thresholds for AKI of > 99.4 mg h/L and clinical response of > 45.7 mg h/L were derived by CART analysis. Cox and logical regression analyses showed that AUCss,24 h of > 100 mg h/L was a significant predictor of AKI (HR 16.29, 95% CI 8.16-30.25, P < 0.001) and AUCss,24 h of ≥ 50 mg h/L (OR 4.39, 95% CI 2.56-7.47, P < 0.001) was independently associated with clinical response. However, these exposures were not associated with mortality. In addition, the correlation between trough concentration (1.2-2.8 mg/L) with outcomes was similar to AUCss,24 h. CONCLUSIONS: For critically ill patients, AUCss,24 h threshold of 50-100 mg h/L was associated with decreased nephrotoxicity while assuring clinical efficacy. Therapeutic drug monitoring is recommended for individualizing polymyxin B dosing.

Conjugated polymers possess better electron conductivity due to large π-electron conjugated configuration endowing them significant scientific and technological interest. However, the obvious deficiency of active-site underutilization impairs their electrochemical performance. Therefore, designing and engineering π-conjugated polymers with rich redox functional groups and mesoporous architectures could offer new opportunities for them in these emerging applications and further expand their application scopes. Herein, a series of 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl) benzene (TAPB)-based π-conjugated mesoporous polymers (π-CMPs) are constructed by one-pot emulsion-induced interface assembly strategy. Furthermore, co-induced in situ polymerization on 2D interfaces by emulsion and micelles is explored, which delivers sandwiched 2D mesoporous π-CMPs-coated graphene oxides (GO@mPTAPB). Benefiting from specific redox-active functional groups, excellent electron conductivity and a 2D mesoporous conjugated framework, GO@mPTAPB exhibits high capability of accommodating Li+ anions (up to 382 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 ) and outstanding electrochemical stability (87.6% capacity retention after 1000 cycles). The ex situ Raman and impedance spectra are further applied to reveal the high reversibility of GO@mPTAPB. This work will greatly promote the development of advanced π-CMPs-based organic anodes toward energy storage devices.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of radiation on paracellular pathway of rat submandibular glands (SMGs) and the mechanism of increasing secretion following treatment with pilocarpine. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In situ irradiation models of SMGs in Wistar rats were conducted, and the glands were exposed to X-radiation at a single dose of 20 Gy. Pilocarpine was intraperitoneally injected 60 min prior to radiation and continuous 6 days postirradiation for a total of 7 days. Salivary secretion, histological changes, pro-inflammatory cytokines, alterations in tight junctions (TJs), and functional membrane proteins aquaporin-5 (AQP5) and claudin-4 mediated by the muscarinic acetylcholine M3 subtype receptor were determined at 1 and 12 weeks after irradiation. RESULTS: Salivary secretion of the irradiated glands was reduced at 1 and 12 weeks. As well, acinar cell numbers, TJ width, and the levels of M3 receptor and AQP5 were decreased. In contrast, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin 6, interleukin 1α, and the expression of the TJ protein claudin-4 were significantly increased in irradiated SMGs. Notably, all the alterations were attenuated by pilocarpine treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Pilocarpine could improve the secretory function of irradiated rat SMGs via reducing inflammation, ameliorating the structural injury of TJs, and attenuating the up-regulation of claudin-4 expression.
