RESUMEN

The competition between on-site electronic correlation and local crystal field stands out as a captivating topic in research. However, its physical ramifications often get overshadowed by influences of strong periodic potential and orbital hybridization. The present study reveals this competition may become more pronounced or even dominant in two-dimensional systems, driven by the combined effects of dimensional confinement and orbital anisotropy. This leads to electronic orbital reconstruction in certain perovskite superlattices or thin films. To explore the emerging physics, we investigate the interfacial orbital disorder-order transition with an effective Hamiltonian and how to modulate this transition through strains.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Treating chronic cutaneous wounds is challenging, and debridement is a central concept in treating them. Studies have shown that CO2 laser debridement can control local infection and promote the wound healing process. The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of fully ablative CO2 laser debridement compared to routine surgical debridement in the treatment of chronic wounds. METHODS: The retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients with chronic (>1 month) cutaneous wounds (≥1 cm2 ) between December 1, 2017, and December 1, 2020, in the Wound Healing Center at Shanghai Ruijin Hospital, China. Patients treated with CO2 laser debridement with a DEKA SmartXide2 C80 (DEKA) (the CO2 laser group) were compared with matched control patients with similar baseline characteristics who had undergone routine surgical debridement (the routine group). The primary outcome was time-to-heal (days) for chronic wounds in two groups, and secondary outcomes included the wound area and BWAT (Bates-Jensen wound assessment tool) score before treatment, and at 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks after treatment. RESULTS: The study included 164 patients (82 in the CO2 laser group and 82 matched in the routine group). The time-to-heal for patients in the CO2 laser group (41.30 ± 17.11) was significantly shorter than that of the patients in the routine group (48.51 ± 24.32) (p = 0.015). At 3 and 4 weeks after treatment, the absolute wound area of the CO2 laser group was significantly smaller than that of the routine group. Also, the CO2 laser group exhibited a significantly lower relative area at 2, 3, and 4 weeks after treatment. The CO2 laser group yielded significantly lower BWAT scores at 2, 3, and 4 weeks after treatment. Additionally, the relative BWAT score was significantly lower in the CO2 laser group than the relative scores in the routine group at 2, 3, and 4 weeks after treatment. No adverse events related to the treatments were observed in either group during the study period. CONCLUSIONS: The present study has shown that fully ablative CO2 laser debridement has several advantages over routine sharp surgical debridement. It is superior at ameliorating wound status and reducing wound area, and it also significantly reduces the time-to-heal for chronic wounds, without causing any adverse events.

RESUMEN

Flavanols, a common class of secondary plant metabolites, exhibit several beneficial health properties by acting as antioxidant, anticarcinogen, cardioprotective, anti-microbial, anti-viral, and neuroprotective agents. Furthermore, some flavanols are considered functional ingredients in dairy products. Based on their structural features and health-promoting functions, flavanols have gained the attention of pharmacologists and botanists worldwide. This review collects and summarizes 121 flavanols comprising four categories: flavan-3-ols, flavan-4-ols, isoflavan-4-ols, and flavan-3,4-ols. The research of the various structural features and pharmacological activities of flavanols and their derivatives aims to lay the groundwork for subsequent research and expect to provide mentality and inspiration for the research. The current study provides a starting point for further research and development.

RESUMEN

Methylglyoxal (MGO) is a highly reactive dicarbonyl compound formed during hyperglycaemia. MGO combines with proteins to form advanced glycation end products (AGEs), leading to cellular dysfunction and organ damage. In type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the higher the plasma MGO concentration, the higher the lower extremity amputation rate. Here, we aimed to identify the mechanisms of MGO-induced dysfunction. We observed that the accumulation of MGO-derived AGEs in human diabetic wounds increased, whereas the expression of glyoxalase 1 (GLO1), a key metabolic enzyme of MGO, decreased. We show for the first time that topical application of pyridoxamine (PM), a natural vitamin B6 analogue, reduced the accumulation of MGO-derived AGEs in the wound tissue of type-2 diabetic mice, promoted the influx of macrophages in the early stage of tissue repair, improved the dysfunctional inflammatory response, and accelerated wound healing. In vitro, MGO damaged the phagocytic functions of M1-like macrophages induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), but not those of M0-like macrophages induced by PMA or of M2-like macrophages induced by interleukins 4 (IL-4) and 13 (IL-13); the impaired phagocytosis of M1-like macrophages was rescued by PM administration. These findings suggest that the increase in MGO metabolism in vivo might contribute to macrophage dysfunction, thereby affecting wound healing. Our results indicate that PM may be a novel therapeutic approach for treating diabetic wounds. MGO forms protein adducts that cause macrophage dysfunction. These adducts cause cell and organ dysfunction that is common in diabetes. Pyridoxamine scavenges MGO to ameliorate this dysfunction, promoting wound healing. Pyridoxamine could be used therapeutically to treat non-healing diabetic wounds.

RESUMEN

Scar formation and chronic ulcers can develop following a skin injury. They are the result of the over- or underproduction of collagen. It is very important to evaluate the quality and quantity of the collagen that is produced during wound healing, especially with respect to its structure, as these factors are very important to a complicated outcome. However, there is no standard way to quantitatively analyse dermal collagen. As prior work characterised some potentially fractal properties of collagen, it was hypothesised that collagen structure could be evaluated with fractal dimension analysis. Small-angle X-ray scattering technology (SAXS) was used to evaluate the dermis of rats exposed to graft harvest, burn, and diabetic pathologic states. It was found that almost all collagen structures could be quantitatively measured with fractal dimension analysis. Further, there were significant differences in the three-dimensional (3-D) structure of normal collagen versus that measured in pathologic tissues. There was a significant difference in the 3-D structure of collagen at different stages of healing. The findings of this work suggest that fractal analysis is a good tool for wound healing analysis, and that quantitative collagen analysis is very useful for assessing the structure of dermal collagen.

RESUMEN

Carbon nanotube (CNT) and perovskite composite materials possessing the combined advantages of CNTs and perovskites have drawn substantial attention due to their promising applications in photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices. Understanding the band alignment of heterojunctions is crucial for further performance improvement. Here, we systematically investigated the interfacial electronic structure and optical absorption of a semiconducting CNT/CH3NH3PbI3 heterojunction via density functional theory calculations. It was found that the CNT/PbI2-terminated CH3NH3PbI3 (001) surface heterojunction is a type-I band alignment, while the CNT/CH3NH3I-terminated CH3NH3PbI3 (001) surface heterojunction is a type-II band alignment, suggesting the different charge carrier transfer processes as well as termination dependence of band alignment in the CNT/CH3NH3PbI3 heterojunction. Further investigation indicated that applying electric fields can modify the band alignment type in the CNT/CH3NH3PbI3 heterojunction. Our results provide the first insight into the interfacial electronic structure of the CNT/CH3NH3PbI3 heterojunction, which may give a new route for designing optoelectronic devices.

RESUMEN

All inorganic perovskite materials have drawn extensive attention, owing to their outstanding performance, facile solution-processed method, and potential applications in optoelectronic devices. However, uncontrollable morphology, high defect density, and instability of perovskites prepared via solution-processed method are the main challenges for their large-scale production and commercialization. Herein, we prepared large-scale CsPbBr3 microwire arrays with highly ordered morphology and high crystalline quality by a template-assisted method. The photodetectors based on CsPbBr3 microwire arrays exhibited remarkable on/off photocurrent ratio of 9.02×103, high detectivity of 1.59×1013 Jones, high responsivity of 4.55 A/W, and fast response speed of 4.9/3 ms. More importantly, the photocurrent of the photodetectors hardly changed in air after being stored for two months, indicating remarkable stability. This study demonstrates that CsPbBr3 microwire arrays provide the possibility for preparing large-scale and high-performance optoelectronic devices.

RESUMEN

Uncovering genetic variation through resequencing is limited by the fact that only sequences with similarity to the reference genome are examined. Reference genomes are often incomplete and cannot represent the full range of genetic diversity as a result of geographical divergence and independent demographic events. To more comprehensively characterize genetic variation of pigs (Sus scrofa), we generated de novo assemblies of nine geographically and phenotypically representative pigs from Eurasia. By comparing them to the reference pig assembly, we uncovered a substantial number of novel SNPs and structural variants, as well as 137.02-Mb sequences harboring 1737 protein-coding genes that were absent in the reference assembly, revealing variants left by selection. Our results illustrate the power of whole-genome de novo sequencing relative to resequencing and provide valuable genetic resources that enable effective use of pigs in both agricultural production and biomedical research.

RESUMEN

We investigate theoretically the impact of Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) effect to two-photon absorption (TPA) and its dependence on the polarization direction of the incident light in monolayer black phosphorus (BP) starting from an anisotropic two band k·p model. It is found that the TPA is enhanced several times by RSOC effect which is tuned by the external electric field. And the TPA response shows highly anisotropic, changing periodically with the polarization direction of incident linearly polarized light as the function of cos4θ approximatively. The TPA coefficient reaches its maximum when the polarization direction is aligned along the armchair direction (x-direction), while falls into its minimum along the zigzag direction (y-direction).

RESUMEN

The vascular causes of lower-extremity ulcers cannot be neglected because they can directly affect treatment methods. No detailed epidemiological statistics have described vascular etiological diagnosis in China. This study aimed to explore the prevalence of clinical vascular etiological examination of lower-extremity ulcers and improve the diagnosis and treatment effectiveness of lower-extremity ulcers. Data were collected from the WoundCareLog database, which includes 2413 cases of lower-extremity ulcers from 478 hospitals nationwide. Data analysis revealed that 1698 (70.4%) lower-extremity blood flow examinations (including physical examination [PE] and assistant examinations [AE]) were performed, of which 61.7% were PE, 10.4% were AE only, and 27.9% were the combined PE and AE[PAE]. The proportion of nonexaminations was higher in the nondiabetic group than in the diabetic group (χ2 = 34.5; P < .01). The positive rates of vascular etiological examination in the diabetic and nondiabetic groups were 69.7% and 70.7%, respectively. Among the four economic regions of China, there were statistically significant differences in the use of the different examination methods. The examination of vascular diseases in lower-extremity ulcers in China has not been fully popularized and requires improvement; there was no statistically significant difference between examination rates by doctors and nurses, which is mainly based on PE. However, PE has certain rates of misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis. The false-positive and false-negative rates were 25.7% and 57.6%, respectively. The use of an AE can compensate for this deficiency by making diagnosis more precise, while the quantitative diagnostic criteria allow disease diagnosis to transcend geographical and operator differences and maximize uniformity. The vascular B-ultrasound examination is more suitable for the medical environment in China because of its mature technology, high hospital penetration rate, and low cost.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To compare the clinical efficacy of disposable multifunctional drainage tube (DMDT)-assisted irrigation with the traditional abscess incision rubber drainage technique in patients with severe multi-space infections in oral and maxillofacial head and neck regions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The data of 74 patients with severe multi-space infections in oral and maxillofacial head and neck regions, who were admitted to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Central Hospital of Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province, China, between January 2015 and January 2019, were retrospectively studied. According to the treatment method, the patients were divided into 2 groups: the DMDT-assisted irrigation group and the abscess incision rubber drainage group. Cure rate, complications, length of hospitalization, days of antimicrobial use, cost of antimicrobial drugs, total hospitalization cost, number of dressing changes, and patient pain during dressing changes were compared between the 2 groups. RESULTS: Of the 74 patients, 38 were treated with the DMDT-assisted irrigation, and 36 with the traditional abscess incision rubber drainage. Compared with the traditional treatment group, the total hospitalization cost of the DMDT-assisted irrigation group is not much different (P = 0.72), but the patients in the DMDT-assisted irrigation group have higher cure rate, fewer complications, less antibiotics cost, shorter hospitalization length and fewer dressing changes than the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The DMDT-assisted irrigation technique not only improves the cure rate, reduces complications, shortens hospitalization, reduces the use of antibiotics, and alleviates patient pain during dressing changes, but also improves clinical and therapeutic efficacy by reducing the number of dressing changes.

RESUMEN

Botia superciliaris, an endemic cobitid fish in China, is widely accepted by Chinese consumers because its edibility. Recently, the black and yellow stripes of B. superciliaris skin have made this species increasingly popular as a novel ornamental fish. However, the genetic basis of the stripe patterns in B. superciliaris skin has not been extensively studied. In this study, Illumina sequencing was employed to identify the mRNAs and miRNAs involved in stripe pattern formation in B. superciliaris skin. A total of 147.25 and 155.15 million (M) high-quality transcriptome reads were generated from three black and yellow skin libraries respectively, which resulted in 159,327 unigenes that were used as reference sequences. A total of 3169 genes exhibited significantly differential expression patterns (fold-change ≥ 2 or ≤ 0.5 and q ≤ 0.05), including 1891 upregulated genes (59.67%) and 1278 downregulated genes (40.33%) in black vs yellow skin. These genes were enriched in 50 GO terms and 10 KEGG pathways (q ≤ 0.05), including melanogenesis, with 21 upregulated genes and 5 downregulated genes in black vs yellow skin. Based on the zebrafish genome, miRNA-seq identified a total of 355 miRNAs, which included 38 novel miRNAs. Furthermore, 87 differentially expressed miRNAs including 50 upregulated and 37 downregulated miRNAs were identified in different color skin (fold-change ≥ 2 or ≤ 0.5 and q ≤ 0.05). Then, target prediction revealed a variety of putative target genes; differentially expressed mRNAs and miRNAs patterns of high-throughput sequencing were validated in 5 mRNAs and miR-217-5p by qRT-PCR. In vivo tests and dual-luciferase reporter assay revealed that overexpression of miR-217-5p can inhibit pheomelanin formation by targeting Zgc. In this study, a comparative analysis was conducted to profile the transcriptome of black and yellow skin for B. superciliaris, and we detected key genes and important miRNAs involved in the B. superciliaris skin pigmentation process. These results will enhance understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying skin pigmentation and facilitate molecular-assisted selection of highly valued skin colors.

RESUMEN

The incidence of chronic wounds has been increasing over the past 20 years. However, the standardized diagnosis and treatment practice of chronic refractory wounds have not been established. In addition, the properties of the wound are characterized by morphology and thus correct description of the wound in medical history collection plays a vital role, which directly affects the definitive diagnosis. To develop more accurate format of clinical history record which can correctly reflect a patient's course and treatment progress, and to standardize the medical history record of chronic refractory wounds, at the national or regional level, we designed the WoundCareLog APP. It acts as a recording and communication tool for wound healing specialists at all levels of medical institutions in China. The WoundCareLog APP is fully compatible to meet the criteria and requirements of conventional medical records by embedding 9 modules. In addition, the demands for morphological description of wounds in wound healing diagnosis and treatment have been fulfilled by enroll of digital imaging technology to overcome the inadequacies of traditional medical history records.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency is a common childhood micronutrient deficiency that results in altered hippocampal function and cognitive disorders. However, little is known about the mechanisms through which neonatal iron deficiency results in long lasting alterations in hippocampal gene expression and function. DNA methylation is an epigenetic mark involved in gene regulation and altered by environmental factors. In this study, hippocampal DNA methylation and gene expression were assessed via reduced representation bisulfite sequencing and RNA-seq on samples from a previous study reporting reduced hippocampal-based learning and memory in a porcine biomedical model of neonatal iron deficiency. RESULTS: In total 192 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between the iron deficient and control groups. GO term and pathway enrichment analysis identified DEGs associated with hypoxia, angiogenesis, increased blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability, and altered neurodevelopment and function. Of particular interest are genes previously implicated in cognitive deficits and behavioral disorders in humans and mice, including HTR2A, HTR2C, PAK3, PRSS12, and NETO1. Altered genome-wide DNA methylation was observed across 0.5 million CpG and 2.4 million non-CpG sites. In total 853 differentially methylated (DM) CpG and 99 DM non-CpG sites were identified between groups. Samples clustered by group when comparing DM non-CpG sites, suggesting high conservation of non-CpG methylation in response to neonatal environment. In total 12 DM sites were associated with 9 DEGs, including genes involved in angiogenesis, neurodevelopment, and neuronal function. CONCLUSIONS: Neonatal iron deficiency leads to altered hippocampal DNA methylation and gene regulation involved in hypoxia, angiogenesis, increased BBB permeability, and altered neurodevelopment and function. Together, these results provide new insights into the mechanisms through which neonatal iron deficiency results in long lasting reductions in cognitive development in humans.

RESUMEN

We investigate theoretically the size-dependence of two-photon absorption (TPA) for circular graphene quantum dots (GQDs) on the basis of electronic energy states obtained by solving the Dirac-Weyl equation analytically under infinite-mass boundary condition. The analytical expressions for TPA coefficient are derived with an arbitrary size-distribution and the transition selection rules are obtained. Results reveal that the intraband transitions in conduction band and valence band contribute much more to TPA than interband transitions. The energy spectrum and TPA peaks are tuned by the size of GQDs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Spermatogenesis is an intricate biological event wherein an undifferentiated spermatogonium develops into mature sperms. MicroRNAs are a type of single strand small non-coding RNA molecule and are implicated in the regulation of many crucial pathways during cell proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation. METHOD: Here, we present a comprehensive comparison of miRNA expression profiling in three main stages during porcine spermatogenesis using high-throughput sequencing. RESULTS: We built three small RNA libraries for the testis, the epididymis and the ejaculated sperm from a Landrace boar, and in total obtained 3821 precursor hairpins encoding for 4761 mature miRNAs, of which 23 are miRNA*. Notably, 940 precursor miRNAs produced both the 5'- and 3'- strands as sister pairs, indicating the distinctive expression patterns of germ cell miRNAs. Additionally, 418 out of 710 co-expressed miRNAs were identified as being differentially expressed between libraries (P < 0.001). Apart from the sexual specific X chromosome, many miRNAs were found to be located on chromosome 12, which may play potential roles in spermatogenesis according to the result of synteny analysis with human and mouse. The Gene Ontology and KEGG pathway analysis revealed that the target genes of co-expressed miRNAs were highly involved in the cell cycle process, metal ion binding, modification of plasma membrane, and the p53 signal pathway.

RESUMEN

Eu-doped In2O3 nanobelts (Eu-In2O3 NBs) and pure In2O3 nanobelts (In2O3 NBs) are synthesized by the carbon thermal reduction method. Single nanobelt sensors are fabricated via an ion beam deposition system with a mesh-grid mask. The gas-sensing response properties of the Eu-In2O3 NB device and its undoped counterpart are investigated with several kinds of gases (including H2S, CO, NO2, HCHO, and C2H5OH) at different concentrations and different temperatures. It is found that the response of the Eu-In2O3 NB device to 100 ppm of H2S is the best among these gases and the sensitivity reaches 5.74, which is five times that of pure In2O3 NB at 260 °C. We also found that the former has an excellent sensitive response and great selectivity to H2S compared to the latter. Besides, there is a linear relationship between the response and H2S concentration when its concentration changes from 5 to 100 ppm and from 100 to 1000 ppm. The response/recovery time is quite short and remains stable with an increase of H2S concentration. These results mean that the doping of Eu can improve the gas-sensing performance of In2O3 NB effectually.

RESUMEN

Single crystal SnO2 nanobelts (SnO2 NBs) and La-SnO2 nanobelts (La-SnO2 NBs) were synthesized by thermal evaporation. Both a single SnO2 NB sensor and a single La-SnO2 NB sensor were developed and their sensing properties were investigated. It is found that the single La-SnO2 NB sensor had a high sensitivity of 8.76 to ethanediol at a concentration of 100 ppm at 230 °C, which is the highest sensitivity of a single SnO2 NB to ethanediol among three kinds of volatile organic (VOC) liquids studied, including ethanediol, ethanol, and acetone. The La-SnO2 NBs sensor also exhibits a high sensitivity, good selectivity and long-term stability with prompt response time to ethanediol. The mechanism behind the enhanced sensing performance of La-doped SnO2 nanobelts is discussed.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a type of non-coding small RNA ~22 nucleotides in length that regulate the expression of protein coding genes at the post-transcriptional level. Glycolytic and oxidative myofibers, the two main types of skeletal muscles, play important roles in metabolic health as well as in meat quality and production in the pig industry. Previous expression profile studies of different skeletal muscle types have focused on these aspects of mRNA and proteins; nonetheless, an explanation of the miRNA transcriptome differences between these two distinct muscles types is long overdue. RESULTS: Herein, we present a comprehensive analysis of miRNA expression profiling between the porcine longissimus doris muscle (LDM) and psoas major muscle (PMM) using a deep sequencing approach. We generated a total of 16.62 M (LDM) and 18.46 M (PMM) counts, which produced 15.22 M and 17.52 M mappable sequences, respectively, and identified 114 conserved miRNAs and 89 novel miRNA*s. Of 668 unique miRNAs, 349 (52.25%) were co-expressed, of which 173 showed significant differences (P < 0.01) between the two muscle types. Muscle-specific miR-1-3p showed high expression levels in both libraries (LDM, 32.01%; PMM, 20.15%), and miRNAs that potentially affect metabolic pathways (such as the miR-133 and -23) showed significant differences between the two libraries, indicating that the two skeletal muscle types shared mainly muscle-specific miRNAs but expressed at distinct levels according to their metabolic needs. In addition, an analysis of the Gene Ontology (GO) terms and KEGG pathway associated with the predicted target genes of the differentially expressed miRNAs revealed that the target protein coding genes of highly expressed miRNAs are mainly involved in skeletal muscle structural development, regeneration, cell cycle progression, and the regulation of cell motility.
