INTRODUCTION: Sweden has been a pioneer in the prophylactic treatment of haemophilia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can detect small changes in joints and can therefore give an indication of a risk of developing arthropathy. AIM: To use MRI to evaluate the outcome of the Swedish 'high-dose regimen' and correlate the findings to age, bleeds, joint score and physical activity. METHODS: The study group comprised 48 Swedish male patients, mean age 25 years (range 12-33 years), with severe or moderate haemophilia A or B. Data on the Haemophilia Joint Health Score (HJHS) were available and physical activity was evaluated by a self-reported questionnaire. RESULTS: MRI score was recorded in 188 joints. Twenty out of 48 patients had a score of ≥1 (range 1-13) in 31 joints of which 3/31 scores were in the knees and 28/31 in the ankles. No correlation was found between the number of recorded bleeds and the MRI score or between HJHS and MRI score. There was no correlation between the physical activity and the number of joint bleeds per se, but a trend (OR 3.0) that those most physically active (19/48; 39.6%), more frequently had an MRI score of ≥1 with an overweight for the right ankle. CONCLUSION: The Swedish prophylactic model offers protection against haemophilia joint arthropathy but will still not prevent osteochondral changes in some patients at young age. MRI of the ankles can signal risk of future arthropathy and indicate need to modify the prophylactic regimen.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that at a similar body mass index, Middle Eastern immigrants are more insulin resistant and at higher risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D) than native Europeans. Insulin resistance is strongly associated with disturbed fat metabolism and cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, fat metabolism is poorly investigated comparing Middle Eastern and European ethnicities. METHODS: This observational study included 26 Iraqi and 16 Swedish-born men without T2D or clinical risk factors for CVD. An oral fat tolerance test (OFTT) was performed, where plasma triglycerides (p-TG) were measured for 6 h. mRNA expression and adipocyte size were measured in subcutaneous adipose tissue biopsies collected prior to OFTT, and magnetic resonance imaging was conducted to assess body fat distribution. RESULTS: The median p-TG accumulation was higher and the clearance slower among Iraqis than Swedes. None of the groups reached their fasting p-TG (Iraqis 1.55 mmol/l; Swedes 0.95 mmol/l) after 6 h (Iraqis p-TG 3.10 mmol/l; Swedes p-TG 1.50 mmol/l). Adipocyte size, mRNA expression, and fat accumulation in the liver, muscle and abdomen were similar in both groups. CONCLUSION: Postprandial p-TG levels rather than fat distribution may reflect early signs of disturbed fat metabolism in Iraqi immigrants without CVD risk factors.

Adipose tissue as well as other depots of fat (triglycerides) are increasingly being recognized as active contributors to the human function and metabolism. In addition to the fat concentration, also the fatty acid chemical composition (FAC) of the triglyceride molecules may play an important part in diseases such as obesity, insulin resistance, hepatic steatosis, osteoporosis, and cancer. MR spectroscopy and chemical-shift-encoded imaging (CSE-MRI) are established methods for non-invasive quantification of fat concentration in tissue. More recently, similar techniques have been developed for assessment also of the FAC in terms of the number of double bonds, the fraction of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids, or semi-quantitative unsaturation indices. The number of papers focusing on especially CSE-MRI-based techniques has steadily increased during the past few years, introducing a range of acquisition protocols and reconstruction algorithms. However, a number of potential sources of bias have also been identified. Furthermore, the measures used to characterize the FAC using both MRI and MRS differ, making comparisons between different techniques difficult. The aim of this paper is to review MRS- and MRI-based methods for in vivo quantification of the FAC. We describe the chemical composition of triglycerides and discuss various potential FAC measures. Furthermore, we review acquisition and reconstruction methodology and finally, some existing and potential applications are summarized. We conclude that both MRI and MRS provide feasible non-invasive alternatives to the gold standard gas chromatography for in vivo measurements of the FAC. Although both are associated with gas chromatography, future studies are warranted.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are common in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), even when the disease is in remission, possibly due to abnormalities in GI motility. Small bowel motility can be assessed globally and in specific intestinal regions during magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) using a displacement mapping technique. PURPOSE: To investigate whether small bowel motility in MRE differs between patients with UC and controls, and if altered motility correlates with GI symptoms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 2016-2018, patients who were admitted for MRE, regardless of clinical indication, were consecutively invited to the study. Healthy volunteers were recruited. The participants completed a questionnaire regarding GI symptoms and relevant clinical data were reviewed in the medical records. The dynamic imaging series obtained during MRE were sent for motility mapping and a motility index (MI) was calculated in jejunum, ileum and terminal ileum in all participants. RESULTS: In total, 224 patients and healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. Fifteen were diagnosed with UC and 22 were considered healthy controls. In UC, the prevalence of GI symptoms was higher than in controls (P < 0.001), both in remission and in active disease. There was no correlation between GI symptoms and small bowel motility in UC. Jejunal motility was lower in UC than in controls (P = 0.049). CONCLUSION: Jejunal motility is decreased in UC compared with healthy controls, but there is no relationship between small bowel motility and GI symptoms in UC.

PURPOSE: To compare MR-based fatty acid composition (FAC) quantification methods against the gold standard technique, gas chromatography (GC), with comparison of a free and a constrained signal model. The FAC was measured in the healthy and edematous legs of lymphedema patients. METHODS: In vivo MRS and MRI data were acquired from 19 patients at 3 T. Biopsies were collected from subcutaneous adipose tissue of both thighs during liposuction. The saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acid fractions (fSFA , fMUFA and fPUFA , respectively) were estimated with the MR-based methods using two signal models: free and constrained (number of methylene-interrupted double bonds expressed in number of double bonds, based on GC data). Linear regression, Bland-Altman plots, and correlation coefficients were used to evaluate the MR methods against the GC of the biopsies. Paired t-test was used to compare the FAC difference between edematous and healthy legs. RESULTS: The estimated parameters correlated well with the GC data (rSFA , rMUFA , and rPUFA = 0.82, 0.81 and 0.89, respectively) using the free model MRI-based approach. In comparison, the MRS-based method resulted in weaker correlations and larger biases compared with MRI. In both cases, correct estimation of fMUFA and fPUFA fractions were not possible using the constrained model. The difference in FAC of healthy and edematous legs were estimated to 0.008 (P = .01), -0.009 (P = .005), and 0.002 (P = .03) for fSFA , fMUFA , and fPUFA . CONCLUSION: In this study, MRI-based FAC quantification was highly correlated, although slightly biased, compared with GC, whereas the MRS-based approach resulted in weaker correlations. Small but significant differences could be found between the healthy and edematous legs of lymphedema patients using GC analysis.

The aim of this study was to acquire the transient MRI signal of hyperpolarized tracers and their metabolites efficiently, for which specialized imaging sequences are required. In this work, a multi-echo balanced steady-state free precession (me-bSSFP) sequence with Iterative Decomposition with Echo Asymmetry and Least squares estimation (IDEAL) reconstruction was implemented on a clinical 3 T positron-emission tomography/MRI system for fast 2D and 3D metabolic imaging. Simulations were conducted to obtain signal-efficient sequence protocols for the metabolic imaging of hyperpolarized biomolecules. The sequence was applied in vitro and in vivo for probing the enzymatic exchange of hyperpolarized [1-13 C]pyruvate and [1-13 C]lactate. Chemical shift resolution was achieved using a least-square, iterative chemical species separation algorithm in the reconstruction. In vitro, metabolic conversion rate measurements from me-bSSFP were compared with NMR spectroscopy and free induction decay-chemical shift imaging (FID-CSI). In vivo, a rat MAT-B-III tumor model was imaged with me-bSSFP and FID-CSI. 2D metabolite maps of [1-13 C]pyruvate and [1-13 C]lactate acquired with me-bSSFP showed the same spatial distributions as FID-CSI. The pyruvate-lactate conversion kinetics measured with me-bSSFP and NMR corresponded well. Dynamic 2D metabolite mapping with me-bSSFP enabled the acquisition of up to 420 time frames (scan time: 180-350 ms/frame) before the hyperpolarized [1-13 C]pyruvate was relaxed below noise level. 3D metabolite mapping with a large field of view (180 × 180 × 48 mm3 ) and high spatial resolution (5.6 × 5.6 × 2 mm3 ) was conducted with me-bSSFP in a scan time of 8.2 seconds. It was concluded that Me-bSSFP improves the spatial and temporal resolution for metabolic imaging of hyperpolarized [1-13 C]pyruvate and [1-13 C]lactate compared with either of the FID-CSI or EPSI methods reported at 3 T, providing new possibilities for clinical and preclinical applications.

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis of the lunate, Kienböck's disease, can lead to fragmentation of the lunate, carpal collapse, and severe osteoarthritis. Since the etiology of Kienböck's disease is impaired circulation, a diagnostic method capable of assessing perfusion would be valuable. Recent studies have suggested that dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MR examinations at 3 T can assess perfusion in healthy carpal bones. PURPOSE: To evaluate the use of DCE-MR for assessing perfusion in the lunate bone in patients with Kienböck's disease. Furthermore, to compare perfusion with histopathology with a focus on bone viability. STUDY TYPE: Prospective case-control study. POPULATION: Fourteen patients with Kienböck's disease and a control group of 19 healthy subjects. Field Strength: 3 T with T1 -weighted fat-saturated contrast-enhanced gradient echo series. ASSESSMENT: Features of the enhancement curves from the DCE-MR examinations, time to peak (TTP), maximum slope (MS), and maximum enhancement (ME) assessed by a radiologist. Six of 14 patients were surgerized with lunate excision, allowing comparison between features of the enhancement curves and histopathology. STATISTICAL TESTS: Mann-Whitney U-test. P < 0.05 was considered a statistically significant difference. RESULTS: Patients with Kienböck's disease showed significantly higher and faster perfusion parameters compared with the control group, the mean value of the TTP in patients was 126.73 sec, in controls 189.79 sec (P = 0.024), ME in patients 173.55 AU, in controls 28.46 AU (P < 0.001), and MS in patients 5.04 AU, in controls 1.06 AU (P < 0.001). When compared with histopathology, increased perfusion was seen in areas of bone formation but also in necrosis. Areas of normal bone showed low perfusion. DATA CONCLUSION: DCE-MRI at 3 T can diagnose altered perfusion in patients with Kienböck's disease. Increased perfusion cannot definitely be used as a marker of bone viability. PURPOSE: To investigate the precision, accuracy, and repeatability of water/fat imaging-based fat quantification in muscle tissue using a large flip angle (FA) and a fat reference for the calculation of the proton density fat fraction (FF). Comparison is made to a small FA water reference approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An Intralipid phantom and both forearms of six patients suffering from lymphedema and 10 healthy volunteers were investigated at 1.5T. Two multigradient-echo sequences with eight echo times and FAs of 10° and 85° were acquired. For healthy volunteers, the acquisition of the right arm was performed twice with repositioning. From each set, water reference FF and fat reference FF images were reconstructed and the average FF and the standard deviation were calculated within the subfascial compartment. The small FA water reference was considered the reference standard. RESULTS: A high agreement was found between the small FA water reference and large FA fat reference methods (FF bias = 0.31%). In this study, the large FA fat reference approach also resulted in higher precision (38% smaller FF standard deviation in homogenous muscle tissue), but no significant difference in repeatability between the various methods was detected (coefficient of repeatability of small FA water reference approach 0.41%). CONCLUSION: The precision of fat quantification in muscle tissue can be increased with maintained accuracy using a larger flip angle, if a fat reference instead of a water reference is used.

PURPOSE: To study the feasibility and to gauge the potential clinical impact of quantifying small bowel motility using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a larger population with a spectra of gastrointestinal conditions with impaired small bowel motility. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were gathered retrospectively from a cohort of 127 patients undergoing MR enterography (1.5 Tesla) in 2011. Cine motility sequences were processed with validated motility analysis software and a parametric motility map was generated. Regions of interests were drawn in the jejunum, ileum, and terminal ileum, and Jacobian standard deviation mean motility index' score (MIS) was calculated. Patients were divided into Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and healthy subjects. RESULTS: In CD, terminal ileum motility was lower in comparison to healthy subjects (mean difference: -0.1052 arbitrary units, 95% confidence interval: -0.1981--0.0122, P = 0.018). Subgrouping of CD showed that the difference was recognized in patients with disease limited to the small bowel (mean difference: -0.1440 arbitrary units, 95% confidence interval: -0.2491--0.0389, P = 0.002). Visible dysmotility of terminal ileum on MRI reflected a reduced MIS compared with normal motility (0.22 ± 0.09 and 0.33 ± 0.15 arbitrary units, respectively, P = 0.043). Motility correlated negatively between ileum and age (P = 0.021), and between terminal ileum and C-reactive protein in ulcerative colitis (P = 0.031). CONCLUSION: Motility quantitation revealed a significant difference in motility of terminal ileum in patients with small bowel CD compared with healthy subjects, concording with visible dysmotility and inflammatory changes. Most approaches to arterial spin labelling (ASL) data analysis aim to provide a quantitative measure of the cerebral blood flow (CBF). This study, however, focuses on the measurement of the transfer time of blood water through the capillaries to the parenchyma (referred to as the capillary transfer time, CTT) as an alternative parameter to characterise the haemodynamics of the system. The method employed is based on a non-compartmental model, and no measurements need to be added to a common time-resolved ASL experiment. Brownian motion of labelled spins in a potential was described by a one-dimensional general Langevin equation as the starting point, and as a Fokker-Planck differential equation for the averaged distribution of labelled spins at the end point, which takes into account the effects of flow and dispersion of labelled water by the pseudorandom nature of the microvasculature and the transcapillary permeability. Multi-inversion time (multi-TI) ASL data were acquired in 14 healthy subjects on two occasions in a test-retest design, using a pulsed ASL sequence and three-dimensional gradient and spin echo (3D-GRASE) readout. Based on an error analysis to predict the size of a region of interest (ROI) required to obtain reasonably precise parameter estimates, data were analysed in two relatively large ROIs, i.e. the occipital lobe (OC) and the insular cortex (IC). The average values of CTT in OC were 260 ± 60 ms in the first experiment and 270 ± 60 ms in the second experiment. The corresponding IC values were 460 ± 130 ms and 420 ± 139 ms, respectively. Information related to the water transfer time may be important for diagnostics and follow-up of cerebral conditions or diseases characterised by a disrupted blood-brain barrier or disturbed capillary blood flow.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the distortion and artifact area of metal in MR images and to compare artifact reduction using different metal artifact-reducing sequences in patients with metal-on-metal (MoM) and non-MoM total hip prostheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six MoM and 15 non-MoM prostheses were examined in a 1.5-T MR scanner using T1-weighted (T1-w) sequences: turbo spin echo (TSE) high-readout bandwidth (hiBW), T1-w; TSE view angle tilting (VAT), T1-w; TSE VAT + slice encoding for metal artifact correction (SEMAC); short tau inversion recovery (STIR) hiBW or matched RF pulses (mRFp). Distortion was quantified using a new method measuring the acetabular roof angle (ARA). The artifact area was defined in the mid-coronal plane of the artifact. RESULTS: The T1 VAT + SEMAC sequence showed the least distortion compared to T1 VAT and T1-hiBW (150°, 127° and 102°, p < 0.001, in MoM; 152°, 143° and 128°, p ≤ 0.014, in non-MoM). The artifact area was smaller in MoM prostheses using the T1 VAT sequence compared to T1 hiBW and T1 VAT + SEMAC (2506 mm(2), 3160 mm(2) and 3214 mm(2), p < 0.001) and smaller in non-MoM prostheses using T1 VAT compared to T1-hiBW (4296 mm(2) and 4831 mm(2), p = 0.041). STIR-mRFp substantially reduced the artifact size compared with STIR-hiBW (MoM 4559 mm(2) and 6323 mm(2); non-MoM 5625 mm(2) and 8764 mm(2), p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Metal artifacts in MR imaging examinations of hip prostheses can be evaluated for distortion using a distortion angle (ARA) and the degree of signal artifact as determined by measuring the largest cross-sectional artifact area. T1 VAT + SEMAC showed the least distortion; T1 VAT and STIR-mRFp were most efficient for reduction of the artifact area.

PURPOSE: To investigate the accuracy and noise performance of fat quantification with multiple gradient-echo images acquired using bipolar read-out gradients and compare them with those of the well-established unipolar technique. THEORY: The bipolar read-out technique induces phase and amplitude errors caused by gradient delays, eddy currents, and frequency-dependent coil sensitivity. In this study, these errors were corrected for jointly with the fat/water separation by modeling the impact of these effects on the signal. This approach did not require acquisition of reference data or modification of the pulse sequence. METHODS: Simulations and a phantom experiment were used to investigate the accuracy and noise performance of the technique and compare them with those of a well-established technique using unipolar read-out gradients. Also, the in vivo feasibility was demonstrated for abdominal applications. RESULTS: The phantom experiment demonstrated similar accuracy of the bipolar and unipolar fat quantification techniques. In addition, the noise performance was shown not to be affected by the added estimations of the phase and amplitude errors for most inter-echo times. CONCLUSION: The bipolar technique was found to provide accurate fat quantification with noise performance similar to the unipolar technique given an appropriate choice of inter-echo time.

PURPOSE: To investigate various sources of bias in MRI-based quantification of fat fraction (FF) and fatty acid composition (FAC) using chemical shift-encoded techniques. METHODS: Signals from various FFs and FACs and individual relaxation rates of all signal components were simulated. From these signals, FF and FAC parameters were estimated with and without correction for differences in individual relaxation rates. In addition, phantom experiments were conducted with various flip angles and number of echoes to validate the simulations. RESULTS: As expected, T(1) weighting resulted in an overestimation of the FF, but had much smaller impact on the FAC parameters. Differences in T(2) values of the signal components resulted in overestimation of the FAC parameters in fat/water mixtures, whereas the estimation in pure oil was largely unaffected. This bias was corrected using a simplified signal model with different T(2) values of water and fat, where the accuracy of the modeled T(2) of water was critical. The results of the phantom experiment were in agreement with simulations. CONCLUSION: T(1) weighting has only a minor effect on FAC quantification in both fat/water mixtures and pure oils. T(2) weighting is mainly a concern in fat/water mixtures but may be corrected using a simplified model.

OBJECTIVE: To apply and compare magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) metal artifact reducing sequences (MARS) including subtraction imaging after contrast application in patients with metal-on-metal (MoM) hip prostheses, investigate the prevalence and characteristics of periprosthetic abnormalities, as well as their relation with pain and risk factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-two MoM prostheses (35 cases with pain and or risk factors, and 17 controls) in 47 patients were examined in a 1.5-T MR scanner using MARS: turbo spin echo (TSE) with high readout bandwidth with and without view angle tilting (VAT), TSE with VAT and slice encoding for metal artifact correction (SEMAC), short tau inversion recovery (STIR) with matched RF pulses, and post-contrast imaging. The relations of MRI findings to pain and risk factors were analyzed and in five revised hips findings from operation, histology, and MRI were compared. RESULTS: TSE VAT detected the highest number of osteolyses. Soft tissue mass, effusion, and capsular thickening were common, whereas osteolysis in acetabulum and femur were less frequent. Contrast enhancement occurred in bone, synovia, joint capsule, and the periphery of soft tissue mass. There was no significant relation between MRI findings and pain or risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: MARS and gadolinium subtraction imaging are useful for evaluation of complications to MoM prosthesis. TSE VAT had the highest sensitivity for osteolysis. Contrast enhancement might indicate activation of aseptic lymphocyte-dominated vasculitis-associated lesion (ALVAL). Pain, small head, or steep prosthesis inclination angle are not useful predictors of periprosthetic abnormalities, and wide indications for MR follow-up are warranted.

Not only the fat content but also the composition of fatty acids (FAs) in stored triglycerides might be of interest in the research on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. In this study, a novel reconstruction approach is proposed that uses theoretical knowledge of the chemical structure of FAs to simultaneously quantify the fat fraction (FF) and the FAs composition (chain length cl, number of double bonds ndb, and number of methylene-interrupted double bonds nmidb) from multiple gradient echo images. Twenty phantoms with various fat contents (FF = 9-100%) and FA compositions (cl = 12.1-17.9, ndb = 0.23-5.10, and nmidb = 0.04-2.39) were constructed and imaged in a 3-T Siemens scanner. In addition, spectra were acquired in each phantom. Slopes and "standard deviations from true values" were used to investigate the accuracy of the two methods. The imaging method holds well in a comparison to the previously suggested spectroscopy method and showed similar overall accuracy. The in vivo feasibility was demonstrated in the thigh adipose tissue of a healthy volunteer. In conclusion, our developed method is a promising tool for FF and FA composition quantification.

PURPOSE: To investigate the normal enhancement patterns of the scaphoid, lunate, and capitate bones with dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was approved by the hospital's Ethics Committee. Nineteen volunteers (13 female, 6 male; mean age 38 years) were examined and all gave written consent. Perfusion was assessed at 3 Tesla using dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI. After two-dimensional (2D) motion correction of the data set, regions of interest were placed in the capitate, lunate, and distal and proximal pole of scaphoid bone and from the mean signal intensities (SI), the enhancement was computed. The four locations were compared for time to peak, delay time, maximum enhancement, and maximum slope using Friedman's two-way analysis of variance. RESULTS: Typical SI versus time curves revealed two components: a faster component with strong contrast enhancement and a slow component with prolonged enhancement. The mean value (standard deviation, SD) for maximum enhancement was 51 (33)% in the capitate, 54 (25)% in the lunate, 51 (34)% in the proximal pole and 51 (28)% in the distal pole of the scaphoid. The result of the Friedman test showed no significant difference (P < 0.05) in the perfusion variables between the capitate, lunate, and distal and proximal scaphoid bones. CONCLUSION: Assessment of perfusion in normal carpal bone using contrast-enhanced MRI is possible. Optimization of the method and understanding of the normal perfusion may allow evaluation of pathological conditions such as osteonecrosis.

The conversion of hyperpolarized (13)C pyruvate to metabolic products in the Krebs cycle provides valuable information about the metabolic status and the viability of the myocardium. Therefore, imaging methods must be able to spectrally discriminate different (13)C metabolites. However, the requirement for spectral selectivity conflicts with the demands for rapid image acquisition and high spatial resolution in cardiac imaging. In this work, the feasibility of a balanced steady state free precession sequence with low flip angles was investigated in the pig heart after injection of hyperpolarized (13)C(1)-pyruvate. Using cardiac gating, it was possible to acquire (13)C-bicarbonate images within a single heartbeat (acquisition time 150 ms) without destroying the substrate signal from the hyperpolarized pyruvate. Therefore, the technique may be useful in dynamic studies of cardiac metabolism.

The content and prevalence of problematic Internet sexual use was investigated in a sample of 1,913 Internet-recruited younger Swedish men and women. Five items as part of a larger Internet sexual use study addressed problems associated with it, control, dysphoria, feeling "addicted," and feeling the need for treatment. The resulting scale of Internet sexual problems indicated that 5% of women and 13% of men reported some problems, with 2% of women and 5% of men indicating serious problems across the five items. Of five predictors of problematic use, three were significant: religiosity, having negative experiences with Internet sexual use, and frequency of pornography viewing. The viewing and sharing of pornography was most closely associated with reported problems. Data also suggested that having some very specific pornographic content interests were associated with an increase in reported problems. While these data were limited by the non-random nature of the sample, they suggest that Internet sexual problems are measurable, are a subset of Internet addiction with sexual content, and affect a small but significant proportion of the Internet-using population.

Middle Eastern immigrants are at high-risk for insulin resistance. Fatty acid composition (FAC) plays an important role in the development of insulin resistance but has not been investigated in people of Middle Eastern ancestry. Here, the aim was to assess the FAC in visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue (VAT and SAT) in healthy Iraqi- and Swedish-born men using a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method.This case-control study included 23 Iraqi- and 15 Swedish-born middle-aged men, without cardiometabolic disease. Using multi-echo MRI of the abdomen, the fractions of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (fSFA, fMUFA, and fPUFA) were estimated in VAT and SAT. SAT was further analyzed in deep and superficial compartments (dSAT and sSAT).In all depots, fPUFA was significantly higher and fSFA significantly lower in Iraqi men, independently of age and BMI. In both Iraqi- and Swedish-born men, higher fPUFA and lower fMUFA were found in sSAT vs. dSAT. Among Iraqi men only, higher fPUFA and lower fMUFA were found in SAT vs. VAT.Iraqi-born men presented a more favorable abdominal FAC compared to Swedish-born men. This MRI method also revealed different FACs in different abdominal depots. Our results may reflect a beneficial FAC in Middle Eastern immigrants.
