Background: Evidence points to adverse effects of trans fatty acids (TFA) on health. The aim of this study was to estimate total TFA intake, evaluate major food contributors and its effect on dyslipidemia. Methods: A total of 3537 adults (48.3% males) were included. Total TFA intake was assessed using two 24-hour dietary recalls. Foods were categorized into specific food groups. Adjusted Logistic Regression analysis was performed to assess the likelihood of dyslipidemia by tertile of TFA aand Saturated Fatty Acid (SFA) level. Results: Median TFA intake was 0.53% of energy (from 0.34 to 0.81) ranging from 0.27 (Q1) to 0.95 (Q3) (p < 0.001, for trend), and 16% of individuals consumed TFA above 1% of their total energy. Cheese was the main contributor to TFA intake, with processed/refined grains and fried fish following. The latter was the main contributor in older adults (51+ years). Adjusted logistic regression analysis showed that individuals at the highest tertile of trans consumption were 30% more likely to have dyslipidemia compared to the lowest ( OR ( Q ⁢ 3 - Q ⁢ 1 ) : 1.3; 95% CI: 1.02-1.66 and OR ( Q ⁢ 2 - Q ⁢ 1 ) : 1.3; 95% CI:1.01-1.66, respectively). This increased by 10% when stratified by SFA intake (OR: 1.4; 95% CI: 1.061-1.942) and remained significant only in individuals at the highest tertile and with higher than recommended SFA intake. Conclusions: A high intake of TFA combined with high SFA intakes further increase the likelihood of dyslipidemia and should be accounted for in public health prevention programs. Monitoring and evaluation of the recent EU legislative measures on TFA levels in foods is also necessary.

BACKGROUND: Iodine is an essential trace element, which is important for human metabolism, growth and mental development. Iodine deficiency may still occur in Europe and the use of iodised salt is an effective measure to enhance iodine intake. Knowledge and awareness about the importance of iodine in nutrition and health can have a positive impact on the use of iodised salt. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the knowledge about and use of iodised salt among university students in two European countries. METHOD: Data from two countries (Germany and Greece) were extracted from a multi-centre cross-sectional survey, conducted among non-nutrition science/non-medical students from October 2018 to April 2019. RESULTS: Among the 359 participants in Germany (35% females, median age: 22 years) and the 403 participants in Greece (51% females, median age: 21 years), 41% and 37%, respectively, reported use of iodised salt at home. Users and non-users did not differ by age, gender and Body Mass Index or general interest in nutrition in both cohorts. However, those who had a better knowledge about iodine and (iodised) salt or had previously attended nutrition classes were more likely to report iodised salt usage. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that strengthening the imparting of nutritional information and additional education of young adults are needed and may improve knowledge about and usage of iodised salt.

Vitamin D deficiency is common even in sunny countries like Greece, especially during winter and is associated with skeletal disorders and additionally with increased risk for chronic diseases and adipose metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. The purpose of this pilot study was the determination of vitamin D status in Greek adults and the investigation of possible correlation with lifestyles and somatometric characteristics. The study was conducted during winter and included 36 members (20 women and 16 men) of a university community in central Greece (latitude 39.6° North). Their age was 36.2 ± 16.3 years, body mass index (BMI) 26.4 ± 4.8 (women 26.6 ± 5.6, men 26.3 ± 3.8), and waist circumference 85.7 ± 13.3 cm (women 81.5 ± 13.0, men 90.7 ± 12.4) (mean ± SD). Mean serum 25(OH)D concentration was 20.1 ± 7.3 ng/mL (women 19.7 ± 7.6, men 20.7 ± 7.1). More than half of the participants had 25(OH)D levels below the 20 ng/mL (50 nmol/L) threshold of deficiency. There was a significant negative association between the use of sunscreen during summer and serum 25(OH)D concentrations during winter and a significant positive association between physical exercise and serum 25(OH)D. Levels of 25(OH)D tended to decrease with increasing BMI in persons with a BMI over 25.0. There is a high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency in Greek adults during winter. Serum 25(OH)D levels in winter are positively associated with exercise and negatively associated with high BMI and the use of sunscreen during summer.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of Greek adults towards salt as well as their differences with respect to gender, age and level of education. DESIGN: Cross-sectional, observational survey. SETTING: Voluntary participation to a telephone interview, using a seventeen-item questionnaire. SUBJECTS: Greek adults aged over 25 years (n 3609), nationally representative according to age, gender and geographical distribution of the Greek population, were interviewed. RESULTS: More women of all age groups compared with men reported adding salt during cooking (P < 0·001), while less reported adding salt on the plate (P < 0·001). Also, more women believed that salt added during cooking was the main source of salt in the diet (P < 0·001). Participants aged 25-34, 35-44 and 45-54 years old had better knowledge of the harmful effects of salt on health compared with the 55+ years age group (P = 0·002, P = 0·001, P < 0·001, respectively); respondents in the aforementioned age groups also knew that children should consume less salt than adults compared with 55+ years age group (P = 0·004, P < 0·001, P < 0·001, respectively). Respondents with secondary and higher educational status were more likely to avoid consumption of processed foods (P < 0·001) and to check the nutrition information on food packaging as compared with respondents having basic education status (P < 0·001). CONCLUSIONS: Awareness needs to be raised regarding salt recommendations for adults and children, sources of sodium in the diet and adding less salt during cooking, as well as reading food labels. Future campaigns for salt reduction should consider gender, age and level of education differences regarding knowledge, attitudes and behaviour towards salt.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the efficacy of Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labels (FOPNLs) as a cost-effective tool for improving dietary choices among Greek consumers. The purpose of the study was to investigate Greek customers' preferences and comprehension of commonly used European FOPNL schemes. METHODS: The Hellenic Food Authority and the Agricultural University of Athens performed a representative online survey in March 2022, titled "The Role of Nutritional Labelling in Public Perception and Food Procurement." Consumers responded to a questionnaire separated into two parts. Part one included (i) personal, sociodemographic information, and (ii) subjective opinions on the FOPNL schemes, and part two comprised (iii) an objective understanding of NutriScore and NutrInform Battery, using 15 different foods. Participants were randomly allocated to these groups, and general mixed models were used for analysis. RESULTS: A total of 1389 adults completed the first part of the survey, and 74.8% completed the second part. The Multiple Traffic Lights scheme was the preferred FOPNL, chosen by 48.4% of respondents, compared to 19.7% for NutrInform Battery and 12.3% for NutriScore. However, the mean objective assessment score was highest for NutriScore (5.8 ± 2.3) compared to NutrInform Battery (5.4 ± 1.9). CONCLUSION: The results highlight the necessity for comprehensive nutrition education programs by showing a considerable gap between subjective preferences and an objective understanding of nutrition labels.

Immunonutrition is the maintenance and induction of immune homeostasis with the use of nutritional factors, the so called, immunonutrients. Immunonutrition focuses on four "Is" representing an equal number of systemic responses with regards to: a) Immunity, b) Infection, c) Inflammation and d) Injury. Although at the early stages of the development of immunonutrition, its application was focused on malnourished patients, with a latter extension in the intensive care unit setting, today we acknowledge the great importance of immunonutrients in rheumatology. In rheumatic diseases (RDs), all the "Is" representing the four aims and targets of immunonutrition are fulfilled. Impaired Immunity is the hallmark of RDs, with both innate and adaptive immunity contributing to the development and course of each disease entity, representing distinct immunoregulation abnormalities, often paired with micronutrient deficiencies. Infections are both drivers and a frequent epiphenomenon of systemic RDs. Subclinical inflammation is propagated long before the first signs or symptoms of RDs and musculoskeletal conditions (injury) are apparent in all patients with RDs, accompanied by pain, underlying connective tissue disease and the consequent reduction in the function of musculoskeletal. Herein, the role of probiotics, curcumin, vitamins, Selenium, Zinc and n-3 fatty acids as immunonutrients is discussed.

The elderly constitute a vulnerable group for increased anxiety and poor diet during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is limited research on the levels of COVID-19-related anxiety and dietary habits including dietary supplementation practices among the elderly and very elderly in Greece. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 364 non-institutionalized elderly (65-74 y) and very elderly (≥75 y) living in northern Greece, with the aim to investigate the use of dietary supplements and their association with other factors, particularly the COVID-19-related anxiety. Levels of anxiety were assessed with the use of the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS-5). The percentage of dietary supplement users was 62.6%. The most popular dietary supplements used were vitamin D followed by vitamin C and multivitamin and mineral supplements. Multivariate analysis showed that the very elderly and overweight individuals were less likely to consume vitamin D supplements. Approximately a third of the participants (33.8%) exhibited signs of COVID-19-related anxiety but only 8% showed dysfunctional levels of anxiety. Regression analysis indicated that women, former smokers, and people exhibiting any sign of COVID-19 anxiety were approximately two times more likely to consume dietary supplements of any kind (Gender: OR 2.34, 95% CI 1.30-4.19; Smoking: OR 2.15, 95% CI: 1.08-4.26; COVID-19 anxiety: OR 2.16, 95 % CI: 1.20-3.91). Our results provide useful insights into the current practices of dietary supplement use in this population group and could be used by dietetic and medical associations as well as public authorities in the formulation of targeted, safe, and effective interventions for the protection of public health.

Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) is an indisputable component of the multidisciplinary therapeutic approach in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Previous research has suggested that in chronic disease where nutrition is an important effector of prognosis, healthy dietary choices might take an unhealthy turn, with patients developing disordered eating in the form of orthorexia nervosa (ON). ON is characterized by a pathological preoccupation with "healthy", "pure" eating, associated with restrictive dietary patterns, nutrient deficiencies and worsening disease outcomes. The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to evaluate ON tendencies in a sample of adult patients with RA. A total of 133 patients with RA were recruited, and completed the ORTO-15 questionnaire for the assessment of ON tendencies. Most of the patients were overweight/obese (53.4%). The results revealed ON tendencies in the sample, with the median ORTO-15 score reaching 36 (IQR: 33-39). Greater ON tendencies were associated with the female gender, and lowered ON tendencies with increasing age and body mass index. The present findings highlight the need for health professional awareness regarding the problem of ON in patients with RA and the importance of screening patients.

BACKGROUND: In Greece, nearly a third of savory baked goods (SBGs) exceeded the limit of 2 g of nonruminant or industrial trans fatty acids (i-TFA) per 100 g fat in 2015. The impact of the Commission Regulation (European Union) 2019/649 on exposure to trans fatty acids (TFA), i-TFA, and saturated fatty acid (SFA) from SBGs has not been previously evaluated. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to explore fatty acid reformulation of SBG products and assess differences in TFA, i-TFA, and SFA intakes using a sample of Greek SBG consumers from a nationally representative survey. METHODS: In 2021, 140 samples of SBGs were collected in the greater metropolitan area of Athens, and their fat profile and content were compared to those from 2015. Based on these measurements, food consumption substitution models were employed to examine TFA and SFA intake differences, and the percent contribution from SBG among consumers was calculated (N = 1008). Nutrient densities were calculated by adjusting all fat intakes by individual mean energy intake (percentage of daily total energy intake). RESULTS: The 2% i-TFA legislative limit/100 g of fat in measured SBGs was exceeded by 11.4% in 2021 compared to 31.1% in 2015 (19.7% increase in compliance). Median i-TFA and TFA intakes from SBGs were reduced from 0.05 (0.01, 0.12)% and 0.13 (0.03, 0.27)% in 2015 to 0.03 (0.01, 0.09) and 0.06 (0.03, 0.13)% in 2021, respectively. In terms of SFA, a mean increase/100 g was calculated, resulting in an increased intake in 2021 compared to 2015 [5.18% (2.78, 8.37) and 3.55 (1.99, 5.73), respectively]. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the reductions seen in i-TFA content of SBGs, food product reformulation efforts in Greece should focus not only on TFA content but also on SFA reduction to improve public health.

The association between salt-related knowledge, attitude, behaviour (KAB) and actual salt consumption in Greek adults is uncertain. This study investigates the correlation between salt intake, gauged by 24-h urinary sodium excretion, with salt-related KAB. It further explores how socio-demographic factors influence these behaviors. Salt consumption was evaluated using a 24-h urinary sodium test, and compared to self-reported KAB data. Knowledge and behavior scores related to salt were computed. An overall cohort-adjusted model examined the relationship between daily salt consumption, knowledge and behavior scores, and certain covariates. Through the stratification by the cohort random effect, two models were established (Cohort I Adults; Cohort II Students) examining the same relationships of the overall cohort model. 463 Greek adults participated. The average salt intake was 9.54 g/day, nearly double the WHO recommendation. Significant differences in knowledge scores were noted based on sex, age, education, and BMI. A trend suggesting lower discretionary salt use with increased salt intake was observed (p = 0.06). However, comprehensive analysis revealed no direct correlation between salt intake and either knowledge (p = 0.562) or behavior scores (p = 0.210). The results emphasize the need for food product reforms by industry stakeholders and accelerated efforts towards reducing salt intake.

Background and aim Excessive intake of sugars and energy from drinks has been postulated to increase the risk of obesity, which may in turn be associated with mental health disorders. In addition, excessive intakes of alcohol and caffeine may co-occur with psychiatric disorders. The purpose of the present pilot study was to estimate energy, sugar, caffeine, and alcohol intakes through the consumption of drinks in patients with schizophrenia and affective disorders and assess potential differences in drink consumption between the two disorders. Methodology The current study included 89 outpatients with schizophrenia (n = 36) and affective disorders (n = 53) attending the psychiatric clinic of the University General Hospital of Larissa (UGHL) in Greece. In addition to anthropometric measurements, the patients were asked to complete a specific, previously validated questionnaire on the frequency of drink consumption in order to estimate sugar, caffeine, and alcohol intakes. Results The participants had a mean body mass index (BMI) of 28.9 ± 5.6 kg/m2 without significant differences between the two types of mental disorders. Similarly, the mean waist circumference (102.6 ± 15.7 cm) and mean body fat percentage (32.9% ± 10.8%) were above the recommended values. The total energy intake from drinks was more than a third of the estimated daily energy requirements. Although there was no significant difference in the mean daily caffeine intake, those with affective disorders had a significantly higher intake of sugars from drinks (median (Mdn) = 80.0 (interquartile range (IQR) = 89.8) g/day) and alcohol (Mdn = 45.6 (IQR = 31.1) g/day), compared to those with schizophrenia (Mdn = 60.0 (IQR = 45.4) g/day and Mdn = 24.9 (IQR = 19.8) g/day, respectively). Conclusions Considering the link between high sugar and alcohol intake with excess body weight and mental health, these preliminary data are of particular concern and point to the need for better dietary counseling in order to improve the dietary behaviors of these patients.

Consumption of unbranded olive oil obtained in bulk has previously been reported to be very high in Greece, underlining the need to investigate knowledge regarding its health attributes and storage practices, two areas that can affect oil quality. This study aimed to investigate Greek consumers' use and choice of olive oil, their knowledge about its quality, as well as domestic storage practices of olive oil. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in a representative sample of 857 Greek households that consume olive oil, using a previously validated questionnaire. Most participating households use olive oil produced by themselves or by their extended family or friends (60.3%), and only 27.4% purchase branded olive oil, while 57% reported using extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). Only 38.4% of the respondents reported optimal domestic storage practices to maintain olive oil quality, with a significant greater percentage of non-producers group compared to olive oil producers. In all areas of Greece, the higher the knowledge of olive oil quality, the higher the probability of consumers selecting EVOO and perceiving olive oil price as low. The present survey highlights the need to heighten consumers' knowledge of olive oil attributes and correct storage practices and awareness about branded EVOO and its superior quality.

Although many Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) have been published for the care of patients with Cystic Fibrosis (CF), including a variety of nutrition recommendations, the quality of these CPGs has never been evaluated. The aim of this study was to compare, review, and critically appraise CPGs for the nutritional management of CF, throughout the lifespan. We searched PubMed, Guidelines International Network (GIN), ECRI Institute, and Guidelines Central for CPGs, with information on the nutritional management of CF. Retrieved CPGs were appraised by three independent reviewers, using the Appraisal of Guidelines, Research and Evaluation II (AGREE II) instrument and checklist. A total of 22 CPGs (seven solely nutrition oriented), by 14 different publishers, were retrieved. The Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand CPGs scored the highest overall quality (94.4%), while the Paediatric Gastroenterology Society/Dietitians Association of Australia CPGs had the lowest score (27.8%). Great variation in AGREE II domain-specific scores was observed in all CPGs, suggesting the existence of different strengths and weaknesses. Despite the availability of several CPGs, many appear outdated, lacking rigor, transparency, applicability, and efficiency, while incorporating bias. Considering that CPGs adherence is associated with better outcomes and the need for improving life expectancy in patients with CF, the development of CPGs of better quality is deemed necessary.

BACKGROUND: Strategies to reduce salt intake are encouraged to be implemented in parallel with those that aim to ensure iodine adequacy at the population level. The aim of the present study was to assess and compare knowledge, attitudes and behaviours related to salt and iodine among students in Europe and Asia. METHODS: A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted with 2459 university students in total (42.7% males, median age 21 years) from four countries in Europe and two countries in Asia. Data were collected with the use of a self-administered questionnaire, and univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were performed to explore any association between variables. RESULTS: Only 6.5% of all participants knew the correct salt recommendations. Nearly a quarter of them (24.4%) found salt recommendations confusing and/or contradictory. There were significant differences between European and Asian participants, with those from Europe being better informed about salt recommendations, but significantly less knowledgeable about iodine. The reported frequency of use of salt and salt-containing sauces either at the table or for cooking, as well as knowledge about ways to reduce salt intake among those who indicated to make conscious efforts to do so, differed significantly between countries. Significant differences between countries were also observed with respect to the type of salt used, with about one third of all participants (34%) not being aware of the kind of salt they used. CONCLUSION: The results of this survey highlight serious salt- and iodine-related knowledge gaps among university students in Europe and Asia. Raising awareness and conducting information campaigns is needed to promote changes in behaviour that would result in a reduction of salt intake and conscious use of iodised salt at the individual level.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of angiogenesis inhibition by bevacizumab, a monoclonal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antibody, on the healing process of colonic anastomoses in rats, assessing some specific involved factors. This new agent is used mainly in metastatic colorectal cancer. The angiogenesis plays an important role in both wound healing and metastatic invasion and spread of malignant cells. There has not been any evidence assessing the optimal time for its safe use in operated patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty Wistar rats were randomly allocated into four equal groups. A colonic anastomosis was performed in all rats. Half of them received intraoperatively a single dose of bevacizumab 5 mg/body weight and the rest received placebo. The animals were sacrificed on the 7th (Avastin 7th, placebo 7th) and 14th (Avastin 14th, placebo 14th) postoperative day. The anastomosis was resected and sent for histological study and for tissue biochemical assays (VEGF, endothelin-1 (ET-1), C-reactive protein (CRP), pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB), carbonylated proteins, hydroxyproline) using specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. For statistical analysis, the Mann-Whitney U test was used (of statistical significance when P < 0.05). RESULTS: No complication or anastomotic dehiscence was observed. Histology did not reveal statistically significant differences between groups concerning degree of inflammation, fibroblasts, collagen, and fibrosis. Likewise, hydroxyproline levels did not differ. However, some statistically significant differences were found in VEGF, CRP and carbonyl proteins (Avastin 7th vs placebo 7th, placebo 14th vs placebo 7th), ET-1, and PAB (Avastin 14th vs Avastin 7th), which did not finally affect the collagen synthesis marker hydroxyproline, nor did the anastomotic strength. CONCLUSIONS: Bevacizumab, when administered intraoperatively, has no significant effect on colon anastomotic healing in rats despite a transient mild ischemia.

BACKGROUND: The advantages of laparoscopic surgery have been well documented. However, the impact of pneumoperitoneum on sepsis sequelae is still equivocal. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of CO(2) pneumoperitoneum, applied under different pressures and exposure times, on sepsis cascade and mortality. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 42 New Zealand rabbits, peritonitis was induced by the cecum ligation and puncture model. After 12 h, the animals were randomized in seven groups: a control group, four groups with pneumoperitoneum (10-15 mmHg for 60-180 min), and two groups with laparotomy (for 60 and 180 min). Blood samples were collected before cecum ligation and puncture, 12 h later and 1, 3, and 6 h after pneumoperitoneum desufflation or abdominal trauma closure to evaluate bacteremia, endotoxemia, white blood cells count, C-reactive protein, and procalcitonin levels. Furthermore, the mortality time was recorded in all animals. RESULTS: Bacteremia and endotoxemia were induced in all groups. Endotoxemia levels were significantly more elevated in the group where pneumoperitoneum was performed under 15 mmHg for 180 min compared with all other groups at 1 and 3 h after pneumoperitoneum desufflation (P < 0.05), except when compared with the group where pneumoperitoneum was performed under 10 mmHg for 180 min. White blood cell and C-reactive protein levels showed similar trends for all groups. However, serum procalcitonin reached statistically higher levels (P < 0.05) in groups with laparotomy compared with groups with pneumoperitoneum and with the control group at 6 h. Survival was lower in the laparotomy groups compared with the pneumoperitoneum groups and with the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In the presence of peritonitis, CO(2) pneumoperitoneum applied in clinically standard pressures, even for extended time intervals, reduces the severity of sepsis and prolongs survival.

Mirizzi's syndrome accounts for an important risk for bile tree injury during surgery, since preoperative diagnosis is missed in half of the cases and is often difficult to differentiate from carcinoma. A 79-year-old male, with a known history of cholelithiasis, was admitted with a progressive obstructive jaundice over 20 days, without pain, fever, or other symptoms. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography described possible microlithiasis of the distal bile duct, but on endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), an irregular stenosis was detected under the junction of hepatic ducts, which was described as possibly neoplastic. A temporary stent was placed and the patient was referred for surgery. On first view the gallbladder appeared hard, embedded in adhesions, giving the impression of an unresectable tumor and the bile duct was not approachable. After a fundus-down incision of the gallbladder multiple stones were extracted. Frozen biopsies from the gallbladder wall were negative. The incision was extended towards the gallbladder neck and a large communication with the common bile duct (CBD) was revealed. A difficult partial cholecystectomy was performed, followed by cholecystojejunostomy with a Roux-en-Y jejunal loop. The patient had a totally uneventful postoperative course. Stent removal was succeeded endoscopically 1 month later. The importance of preoperative ERCP and CBD stenting is highlighted in this article. ERCP may have failed to distinguish Mirizzi's syndrome from carcinoma, however the stent placement saved the cardiologically compromised patient from further surgical manipulations. Therefore, in ambiguous cases, whatever the final diagnosis turns to be, either carcinoma or Mirizzi's syndrome, CBD stenting can be useful for the final management of the patient.

BACKGROUND: The indications and benefits of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) in patients with liver cirrhosis and symptomatic cholelithiasis have not been satisfactorily documented. The aim of this study was to investigate its efficacy and safety in such patients. METHODS: Medical records of 38 patients with liver cirrhosis (stages Child-Pugh A and B) who underwent LC were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic characteristics and other parameters including initial presentation, conversion rate, complication rate, mortality, and duration of hospital stay were investigated and compared with noncirrhotic patients' parameters in our database. RESULTS: Cirrhotic patients who underwent LC were older than noncirrhotic patients (P=0.021). Both the conversion rate (15.78%) and the duration of hospital stay were increased in the cirrhotic group, but without significant differences. Major complications occurred more often in the cirrhotic group (P=0.027), increasing morbidity; however, the mortality was zero. CONCLUSIONS: LC can be safely performed in Child-Pugh A and B cirrhotic patients with symptomatic gallstone disease, with acceptable complication and conversion rates. The increased risk for a major complication, however, demands more attention than usual.

To assess the possible cardiovascular risks associated with energy drink (ED) consumption in Europe, a comprehensive literature research was performed in regard to (i) possible ED-induced dose-dependent cardiovascular outcomes, (ii) ED consumption patterns in Europe and (iii) the risks of EDs in combination with alcohol. The identified intervention studies primarily investigated acute ED effects in young healthy adults. Moderate consumption of EDs corresponding to an acute caffeine intake of up to 200 mg did not result in clinically relevant cardiovascular changes in young healthy adults. However, high intake of EDs (about 1 L) was associated with moderate to severe adverse effects in some participants (i.a. prolonged QTc interval, palpitations). Studies have indicated that on some occasions, a substantial proportion of ED consuming children and adolescents (12% in 16 EU Member States) drink EDs in high quantities (≥1 L). This could pose a possible health risk to this group since adverse effects by such high ED consumption have been observed already in young healthy adults. Among further measures that might be considered to minimize this identified risk, policy makers could develop information and educational programs with the aim of raising public awareness.
