RESUMEN

Remote robotic systems are employed in the CERN accelerator complex to perform different tasks, such as the safe handling of cables and their connectors. Without dedicated control, these kinds of actions are difficult and require the operators' intervention, which is subjected to dangerous external agents. In this paper, two novel modules of the CERNTAURO framework are presented to provide a safe and usable solution for managing optical fibres and their connectors. The first module is used to detect touch and slippage, while the second one is used to regulate the grasping force and contrast slippage. The force reference was obtained with a combination of object recognition and a look-up table method. The proposed strategy was validated with tests in the CERN laboratory, and the preliminary experimental results demonstrated statistically significant increases in time-based efficiency and in the overall relative efficiency of the tasks.

RESUMEN

Mechatronics and robotics appeared particularly effective in students' education, allowing them to create non-traditional solutions in STEM disciplines, which have a direct impact and interaction with the world surrounding them. This paper presents the current state of the MiniCERNBot Educational Robotic platform for high-school and university students. The robot provides a comprehensive educative system with tutorials and tasks tuned for different ages on 3D design, mechanical assembly, control, programming, planning, and operation. The system is inspired to existing robotic systems and typical robotic interventions performed at CERN, and includes an education mock-up that follows the example of a previous real operation performed in CERN's Antimatter Factory. The paper describes the learning paths where the MiniCERNBot platform can be used by students, at different ages and disciplines. In addition, it describes the software and hardware architecture, presenting results on modularity and network performance during education exercises. In summary, the objective of the study is improving the way STEM educational and dissemination activities at CERN Robotics Lab are performed, as well as their possible synergies with other education institutions, such as High-Schools and Universities, improving the learning collaborative process and inspiring students interested in technical studies. To this end, a new educational robotic platform has been designed, inspired on real scientific operations, which allows the students practice multidisciplinary STEM skills in a collaborative problem-solving way, while increasing their motivation and comprehension of the research activities.

Robotic interventions in hazardous scenarios need to pay special attention to safety, as in most cases it is necessary to have an expert operator in the loop. Moreover, the use of a multi-modal Human-Robot Interface allows the user to interact with the robot using manual control in critical steps, as well as semi-autonomous behaviours in more secure scenarios, by using, for example, object tracking and recognition techniques. This paper describes a novel vision system to track and estimate the depth of metallic targets for robotic interventions. The system has been designed for on-hand monocular cameras, focusing on solving lack of visibility and partial occlusions. This solution has been validated during real interventions at the Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN) accelerator facilities, achieving 95% success in autonomous mode and 100% in a supervised manner. The system increases the safety and efficiency of the robotic operations, reducing the cognitive fatigue of the operator during non-critical mission phases. The integration of such an assistance system is especially important when facing complex (or repetitive) tasks, in order to reduce the work load and accumulated stress of the operator, enhancing the performance and safety of the mission.

Purpose. To evaluate the results of Damage Control Strategy (DCS) in the treatment of generalized peritonitis from perforated diverticular disease in patients with preoperative severe systemic diseases. Methods. All the patients with diffuse peritonitis (Hinchey 3 and 4) and the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score ≥3 were included and underwent DCS consisting of a 2-step procedure. The first was peritoneal lavage, perforated colon-stapled resection, and temporary abdominal closure with negative pressure wound therapy combined with instillation. The second step, 48 hours later, included the possibility of restoring intestinal continuity basing on local and general patients' conditions. Results. Thirty patients (18 [60%] women and 12 [40%] men, median age 68.5 [range = 35-84] years) were included (18 [60%] ASA III, 11 [36.7%] ASA IV, and 1 [0.03%] ASA V). Seven patients (23.3%) showed sepsis and 1 (3.33%) septic shock. At second surgery, 24 patients (80%) received a colorectal anastomosis and 6 patients (20%) underwent a Hartmann's procedure. Median hospital stay was 18 days (range = 12-62). Postoperative morbidity rate was 23.3% (7/30) and included 1 anastomotic leak treated with Hartmann's procedure. Consequently, at discharge from hospital, 23 patients (76.6%) were free of stoma. Primary fascial closure was possible in all patients. Conclusions. DCS with temporary abdominal closure by negative pressure wound therapy combined with instillation in patients with diffuse peritonitis from complicated diverticulitis could represent a feasible surgical option both in hemodynamically stable and no stable patients, showing encouraging results including a low stoma rate and an acceptable morbidity rate.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) and arterial stiffness (AS) increases with age. AIMS: To evaluate if AS is correlated to longitudinal strain (LS), a marker of left ventricular (LV) function, in elderly AF patients with preserved ejection fraction (EF) undergoing external cardioversion. METHODS: AS was measured using the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI), LS was calculated from echocardiographic data of three consecutive cardiac cycles. RESULTS: We enrolled 38 patients (age 76 ± 8 years; men 60.5%; EF 65 ± 7%). LS and CAVI were, respectively, - 17.7 ± 3.7% and 9.7 ± 1.3. Multivariate analysis showed that LV performance was inversely related to height (p < 0.001) and to the presence of AF-related symptoms (p = 0.008). LS grew with increasing values of CAVI (p = 0.038). CONCLUSIONS: In elderly AF patients with preserved systolic function, LV performance is directly associated with AS. This link could influence atrium remodeling and the incidence of arrhythmia relapse.

The Ironless Inductive Position Sensor (I2PS) has been introduced as a valid alternative to Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDTs) when external magnetic fields are present. Potential applications of this linear position sensor can be found in critical systems such as nuclear plants, tokamaks, satellites and particle accelerators. This paper analyzes the performance of the I2PS in the harsh environment of the collimators of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), where position uncertainties of less than 20 µm are demanded in the presence of nuclear radiation and external magnetic fields. The I2PS has been targeted for installation for LHC Run 2, in order to solve the magnetic interference problem which standard LVDTs are experiencing. The paper describes in detail the chain of systems which belong to the new I2PS measurement task, their impact on the sensor performance and their possible further optimization. The I2PS performance is analyzed evaluating the position uncertainty (on 30 s), the magnetic immunity and the long-term stability (on 7 days). These three indicators are assessed from data acquired during the LHC operation in 2015 and compared with those of LVDTs.

The reliability of wireless communication in a network of mobile wireless robot nodes depends on the received radio signal strength (RSS). When the robot nodes are deployed in hostile environments with ionizing radiations (such as in some scientific facilities), there is a possibility that some electronic components may fail randomly (due to radiation effects), which causes problems in wireless connectivity. The objective of this paper is to maximize robot mission capabilities by maximizing the wireless network capacity and to reduce the risk of communication failure. Thus, in this paper, we consider a multi-node wireless tethering structure called the "server-relay-client" framework that uses (multiple) relay nodes in between a server and a client node. We propose a robust stochastic optimization (RSO) algorithm using a multi-sensor-based RSS sampling method at the relay nodes to efficiently improve and balance the RSS between the source and client nodes to improve the network capacity and to provide redundant networking abilities. We use pre-processing techniques, such as exponential moving averaging and spatial averaging filters on the RSS data for smoothing. We apply a receiver spatial diversity concept and employ a position controller on the relay node using a stochastic gradient ascent method for self-positioning the relay node to achieve the RSS balancing task. The effectiveness of the proposed solution is validated by extensive simulations and field experiments in CERN facilities. For the field trials, we used a youBot mobile robot platform as the relay node, and two stand-alone Raspberry Pi computers as the client and server nodes. The algorithm has been proven to be robust to noise in the radio signals and to work effectively even under non-line-of-sight conditions.

BACKGROUND: Since the outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, administration of the currently available vaccines has mostly been recommended for subjects at high risk, including elderly populations on long-term oral anticoagulation therapy (OAT) with warfarin. However, there is no clear evidence of the stability of the International Normalised Ratio (INR) after vaccine administration in those subjects on long-term OAT. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of COVID-19 vaccination on anticoagulation levels in patients on long-term OAT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: INR values of patients on long-term OAT who had undergone anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccination from January to June 2021 were monitored for a total of 90 days follow-up after the first vaccination dose. These were then compared with INR values before vaccination. The second dose, when required, was administered during follow-up. Inclusion criterion was stable long-term INR for at least 6 months before vaccination. Exclusion criteria were recent surgery, intercurrent diseases, or treatment with medication that could compromise findings in the 3 months before vaccination and during follow-up. RESULTS: No differences were observed in the anticoagulation levels before and after COVID-19 vaccination in any of the patients studied: mean INR values were 2.39 (range 2.20-2.63) before vaccination and 2.40 (range 2.16-2.76) after vaccination (p=0.5). There was no difference in anticoagulation levels in relation to age, sex, indication for OAT, or type of vaccine (p>0.5). No bleeding or thrombotic complications were documented during follow-up. DISCUSSION: These are the first data to be reported on anticoagulation levels in patients on stable OAT after COVID-19 vaccination. No influence on the quality of OAT was detected after the vaccination; no bleeding or thrombotic complications were recorded in the follow-up. No difference between the four available COVID vaccines was found. Dose adjustment was only required in a few cases, thus confirming the stability of anticoagulation levels.

A 51 years old male was admitted to our Emergency Department because a severe pain in the right lumbar area irradiating to homolateral thigh, with fever. Abdomen and pelvis TC scan revealed a big retroperitoneal abscess. An urgent laparotomy was performed. It showed a huge retroperitoneal purulent collection extending caudally to right thigh and all around urinary bladder. The fluid collections were drained and a sample was sent for biological examination. There was the evidence of enterococcus faecalis and specific antibiotic treatment was done. The patient was discharged after 33 days in good general conditions. The aim of this study is to emphasize the difficulty in clinical diagnosis of this pathology due to the lack specific symptoms and signs, and the occasional difficulty to find the original cause of the condition. Moreover we remark the utility of CT scan and of selective collection drainage.
