RESUMEN

Vector-borne pathogens exist in obligate transmission cycles between vector and reservoir host species. Host and vector shifts can lead to geographic expansion of infectious agents and the emergence of new diseases in susceptible individuals. Three bacterial genospecies (Borrelia afzelii, Borrelia bavariensis, and Borrelia garinii) predominantly utilize two distinct tick species as vectors in Asia (Ixodes persulcatus) and Europe (Ixodes ricinus). Through these vectors, the bacteria can infect various vertebrate groups (e.g., rodents, birds) including humans where they cause Lyme borreliosis, the most common vector-borne disease in the Northern hemisphere. Yet, how and in which order the three Borrelia genospecies colonized each continent remains unclear including the evolutionary consequences of this geographic expansion. Here, by reconstructing the evolutionary history of 142 Eurasian isolates, we found evidence that the ancestors of each of the three genospecies probably have an Asian origin. Even so, each genospecies studied displayed a unique substructuring and evolutionary response to the colonization of Europe. The pattern of allele sharing between continents is consistent with the dispersal rate of the respective vertebrate hosts, supporting the concept that adaptation of Borrelia genospecies to the host is important for pathogen dispersal. Our results highlight that Eurasian Lyme borreliosis agents are all capable of geographic expansion with host association influencing their dispersal; further displaying the importance of host and vector association to the geographic expansion of vector-borne pathogens and potentially conditioning their capacity as emergent pathogens.

This study aims to evaluate the effect of different air computed tomography (CT) numbers of the image value density table (IVDT) on the retrospective dose calculation of head-and-neck (HN) radiotherapy using TomoTherapy megavoltage CT (MVCT) images. The CT numbers of the inside and outside air and each tissue-equivalent plug of the "Cheese" phantom were obtained from TomoTherapy MVCT. Two IVDTs with different air CT numbers were created and applied to MVCT images of the HN anthropomorphic phantom and recalculated by Planned Adaptive to verify dose distribution. We defined the recalculation dose with MVCT images using both inside and outside air of the IVDT as IVDT MVCT inair ${\mathrm{IVDT}}_{\mathrm{MVCT}}^{\mathrm{inair}}$ and IVDT MVCT outair ${\mathrm{IVDT}}_{\mathrm{MVCT}}^{\mathrm{outair}}$ , respectively. Treatment planning doses calculated on kVCT images were compared with those calculated on MVCT images using two different IVDT tables, namely, IVDT MVCT inair ${\mathrm{IVDT}}_{\mathrm{MVCT}}^{\mathrm{inair}}$ and IVDT MVCT outair ${\mathrm{IVDT}}_{\mathrm{MVCT}}^{\mathrm{outair}}$ . The difference between average MVCT numbers ±1 standard deviation on inside and outside air of the calibration phantom was 65 ± 36 HU. This difference in MVCT number of air exceeded the recommendation lung tolerance for dose calculation error of 2%. The dose differences between the planning target volume (PTV): D98% , D50% , D2% and the organ at risk (OAR): Dmax , Dmean recalculated by IVDT MVCT inair ${\mathrm{IVDT}}_{\mathrm{MVCT}}^{\mathrm{inair}}$ and IVDT MVCT outair ${\mathrm{IVDT}}_{\mathrm{MVCT}}^{\mathrm{outair}}$ using MVCT images were a maximum of 0.7% and 1.2%, respectively. Recalculated doses to the PTV and OAR with MVCT showed that IVDT MVCT outair ${\mathrm{IVDT}}_{\mathrm{MVCT}}^{\mathrm{outair}}$ was 0.5%-0.7% closer to the kVCT treatment planning dose than IVDT MVCT inair ${\mathrm{IVDT}}_{\mathrm{MVCT}}^{\mathrm{inair}}$ . This study showed that IVDT MVCT outair ${\mathrm{IVDT}}_{\mathrm{MVCT}}^{\mathrm{outair}}$ was more accurate than IVDT MVCT inair ${\mathrm{IVDT}}_{\mathrm{MVCT}}^{\mathrm{inair}}$ in recalculating the dose HN cases of MVCT using TomoTherapy.

In 2019 to 2021, the golden mussel Limnoperna fortunei and several freshwater fishes were sampled from 22 sites of the Tone River system including Lake Kasumigaura, Honshu, Japan, to examine the invasion of bucephalid trematodes. The parasite species identification was performed by morphological observation and DNA barcoding based on the sequences of nuclear 28S rDNA and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1). A total of 1719 mussels were collected from 10 sites, and trematode-infected mussels were detected from 8 sites with prevalences between 0.3 and 42.9%. The sporocysts and cercariae were identified as Prosorhynchoides ozakii, a newly introduced species in the river system. A total of 700 fish individuals belonging to 24 species were collected from 15 sites. Two species of catfishes (Silurus asotus and Ictalurus punctatus) harbored mature or immature adults of Pr. ozakii in the intestine with prevalences between 8.3 and 20% including both host species. The metacercariae of Pr. ozakii were found from the fins and epidermis of 13 fish species from 10 sites (prevalence 4.8-100%). Fishes were heavily infected with metacercariae in fins, which were surrounded by the infiltration of hemocytes and rodlet cells. A population genetic analysis of Pr. ozakii did not show an obvious bottleneck, suggesting the possibility that the parasite was intentionally and repeatedly introduced into the river system.

New data have been obtained for three representatives of Exorchis; Exorchis convictus sp. n., Exorchis oviformis and Exorchis sp., from fish in the East-Asian region. For the first time, based on combined sequences of the ITS2 rDNA region and the 28S rRNA gene, Exorchis is confirmed to belong Cryptogonimidae. Based on analysis of a mitochondrial marker (cox1), the 'Japanese' and 'Russian' haplogroups are identified for E. oviformis isolated from Silurus asotus. One specimen of E. oviformis obtained in Japan is identical to the 'Russian' haplotype. Haplotype patterns are also observed for metacercariae of Exorchis sp. from Tanakia lanceolata and Carassius sp. fish in Kyushu Island (Japan).

Thermoplastic masks, used along with surgical masks, enable immobilization methods to reduce the risk of infection in patients undergoing intracranial stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic radiotherapy (SRS/SRT) during the COVID-19 crisis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of thermoplastic mask immobilization with a surgical mask using an ExacTrac system. Twelve patients each with brain metastases were immobilized using a thermoplastic mask and a surgical mask and only a thermoplastic mask. Two x-ray images were acquired to correct (XC) and verify (XV) the patient's position at a couch angle of 0°. Subsequently, the XC and XV images were acquired at each planned couch angle for non-coplanar beams. When the position errors were detected after couch rotation for non-coplanar beams, the errors were corrected at each planned couch angle until a clinically acceptable tolerance was attained. The position errors in the translational and rotational directions (vertical, lateral, longitudinal, pitch, roll, and yaw) were retrospectively investigated using data from the ExacTrac system database. A standard deviation of XC translational and rotational position errors with and without a surgical mask in the lateral (1.52 vs 2.07 mm), longitudinal (1.59 vs 1.87 mm), vertical (1.00 vs 1.73 mm), pitch (0.99 vs 0.79°), roll (1.24 vs 0.68°), and yaw (1.58 vs 0.90°) directions were observed at a couch angle of 0°. Most of patient positioning errors were less than 1.0 mm or 1.0° after the couch was rotated to the planned angle for non-coplanar beams. The overall absolute values of the translational and rotational XV position errors with and without the surgical mask were less than 0.5 mm and 0.5°, respectively. This study showed that a thermoplastic mask with a surgical mask is a feasible immobilization technique for brain SRS/SRT patients using the ExacTrac system.

BACKGROUND: We investigated variations in liver position relative to the vertebral bone for liver cancer treated with stereotactic body radiation therapy under expiratory phase breath-hold (BH) for treatment with contrast-enhanced-computed tomography (CECT), non-CECT, and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen consecutive patients using a contrast enhancement (CE) agent for the CT simulation session for this retrospective study were selected. The first computed tomography (CT) scan without the use of CE agent in the expiratory phase was used for treatment planning (pCT). The remaining three CT scans without a CE agent under expiratory phase BH were acquired successively without repositioning to evaluate the intra-fraction variation in liver position. Furthermore, a three-phase CT scan (arterial, portal, and late phases) accompanied by a CE agent under expiratory phase BH was acquired for target delineation. CBCT scans without the use of a CE agent under expiratory phase BH were acquired for treatment. Inter-fractional variations (non-CECT or CECT) in liver position were measured using the difference between CBCT and pCT or each 3 phase CECT images, respectively. RESULTS: The average ± standard deviations for intrafractional, non-CECT interfractional variations, and CECT interfractional variations were 1.0 ± 1.3, 2.5 ± 2.6, and 6.4 ± 6.4 mm, respectively, in the craniocaudal (CC) direction. Intra- and inter-fractional variations in liver position were relatively small for non-CECT. However, significant inter-fractional liver position variations in CECT were observed in the expiratory phase BH. The position of the liver should be carefully considered when applying CECT images for image-guided radiotherapy.

Computed tomography (CT) data are required to calculate the dose distribution in a patient's body. Generally, there are two CT number calibration methods for commercial radiotherapy treatment planning system (RTPS), namely CT number-relative electron density calibration (CT-RED calibration) and CT number-mass density calibration (CT-MD calibration). In a previous study, the tolerance levels of CT-RED calibration were established for each tissue type. The tolerance levels were established when the relative dose error to local dose reached 2%. However, the tolerance levels of CT-MD calibration are not established yet. We established the tolerance levels of CT-MD calibration based on the tolerance levels of CT-RED calibration. In order to convert mass density (MD) to relative electron density (RED), the conversion factors were determined with adult reference computational phantom data available in the International Commission on Radiological Protection publication 110 (ICRP-110). In order to validate the practicability of the conversion factor, the relative dose error and the dose linearity were validated with multiple RTPSes and dose calculation algorithms for two groups, namely, CT-RED calibration and CT-MD calibration. The tolerance levels of CT-MD calibration were determined from the tolerance levels of CT-RED calibration with conversion factors. The converted RED from MD was compared with actual RED calculated from ICRP-110. The conversion error was within ±0.01 for most standard organs. It was assumed that the conversion error was sufficiently small. The relative dose error difference for two groups was less than 0.3% for each tissue type. Therefore, the tolerance levels for CT-MD calibration were determined from the tolerance levels of CT-RED calibration with the conversion factors. The MD tolerance levels for lung, adipose/muscle, and cartilage/spongy-bone corresponded to ±0.044, ±0.022, and ±0.045 g/cm3 , respectively. The tolerance levels were useful in terms of approving the CT-MD calibration table for clinical use.

A new cosmocercid species, Cosmocercoides qingtianensis sp. n., collected from the intestine of the Asiatic toad Bufo gargarizans Cantor (Amphibia: Anura) is described using integrated approaches, including light and scanning electron microscopy, and sequencing and analyzing the ribosomal [small ribosomal DNA (18S) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS)] and mitochondrial [cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1)] target regions, respectively. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by the combination of the following morphological characters, including the large body size, the presence of lateral alae and somatic papillae in both sexes, the length of spicules, the particular morphology and length of gubernaculum, the number, arrangement and morphology of caudal rosettes, the presence of large medioventral precloacal papilla and the long tail. Our molecular analysis revealed the level of intraspecific genetic variation of C. qingtianensis sp. n. distinctly lower than that of the interspecific genetic variation in the ITS and cox1 regions. However, there are some overlaps in the range of intra- and interspecific 18S sequence divergence between the new species and some closely related species. The results of molecular analysis supported the validity of the new species based on the morphological observations. The 18S, ITS, and cox1 regions of C. pulcher collected from Bufo japonicus formosus in Japan were also sequenced and analyzed. The results showed a low level of intraspecific genetic variation in 18S and ITS regions (0-0.12% and 0-0.23% nucleotide differences, respectively), but a relatively high level of intraspecific genetic variation in cox1 region (0.78-4.69% nucleotide differences). In addition, it seems more powerful and practical to use the cox1 region as a genetic marker for the accurate identification and differentiation of species of Cosmocercoides than the 18S and ITS regions, especially for the closely related species.

The accuracy of computed tomography number to electron density (CT-ED) calibration is a key component for dose calculations in an inhomogeneous medium. In a previous work, it was shown that the tolerance levels of CT-ED calibration became stricter with an increase in tissue thickness and decrease in the effective energy of a photon beam. For the last decade, a low effective energy photon beam (e.g., flattening-filter-free (FFF)) has been used in clinical sites. However, its tolerance level has not been established yet. We established a relative electron density (ED) tolerance level for each tissue type with an FFF beam. The tolerance levels were calculated using the tissue maximum ratio (TMR) and each corresponding maximum tissue thickness. To determine the relative ED tolerance level, TMR data from a Varian accelerator and the adult reference computational phantom data in the International Commission on Radiological Protection publication 110 (ICRP-110 phantom) were used in this study. The 52 tissue components of the ICRP-110 phantom were classified by mass density as five tissues groups including lung, adipose/muscle, cartilage/spongy-bone, cortical bone, and tooth tissue. In addition, the relative ED tolerance level of each tissue group was calculated when the relative dose error to local dose reached 2%. The relative ED tolerances of a 6 MVFFF beam for lung, adipose/muscle, and cartilage/spongy-bone were ±0.044, ±0.022, and ±0.044, respectively. The thicknesses of the cortical bone and tooth groups were too small to define the tolerance levels. Because the tolerance levels of CT-ED calibration are stricter with a decrease in the effective energy of the photon beam, the tolerance levels are determined by the lowest effective energy in useable beams for radiotherapy treatment planning systems.

RESUMEN

We confirmed infection of 2 patients with Borrelia miyamotoi in Japan by retrospective surveillance of Lyme disease patients and detection of B. miyamotoi DNA in serum samples. One patient also showed seroconversion for antibody against recombinant glycerophosphodiester phosphodiesterase of B. miyamotoi. Indigenous relapsing fever should be considered a health concern in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Monte Carlo simulation code is commonly used for the dose calculation of boron neutron capture therapy. In the past, dose calculation was performed assuming a homogeneous mass density and elemental composition inside the tissue, regardless of the patient's age or sex. Studies have shown that the mass density varies with patient to patient, particularly for those that have undergone surgery or radiotherapy. A method to convert computed tomography numbers into mass density and elemental weights of tissues has been developed and applied in the dose calculation process using Monte Carlo codes. A recent study has shown the variation in the computed tomography number between different scanners for low- and high-density materials. PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the elemental composition inside each calculation voxel on the dose calculation and the application of the stoichiometric CT number calibration method for boron neutron capture therapy planning. METHODS: Monte Carlo simulation package Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System was used for the dose calculation. Firstly, a homogeneous cubic phantom with the material set to ICRU soft tissue (four component), muscle, fat, and brain was modelled and the NeuCure BNCT system accelerator-based neutron source was used. The central axis depth dose distribution was simulated and compared between the four materials. Secondly, a treatment plan of the brain and the head and neck region was simulated using a dummy patient dataset. Three models were generated; (1) a model where only the fundamental materials were considered (simple model), a model where each voxel was assigned a mass density and elemental weight using (2) the Nakao20 model, and (3) the Schneider00 model. The irradiation conditions were kept the same between the different models (irradiation time and irradiation field size) and the near maximum (D1%) and mean dose to the organs at risk were calculated and compared. RESULTS: A maximum percentage difference of approximately 5% was observed between the different materials for the homogeneous phantom. With the dummy patient plan, a large dose difference in the bone (greater than 12%) and region near the low-density material (mucosal membrane, 7%-11%) was found between the different models. CONCLUSIONS: A stoichiometric CT number calibration method using the newly developed Nakao20 model was applied to BNCT dose calculation. The results indicate the importance of calibrating the CT number to elemental composition for each individual CT scanner for the purpose of BNCT dose calculation along with the consideration of heterogeneity of the material composition inside the defined region of interest.

PURPOSE: We created a phantom and analysis program for the assessment of IGRT positional accuracy. We verified the accuracy of analysis and the practicality of this evaluation method at several facilities. METHOD: End-to-end test was performed using an in-house phantom, and EPID images were acquired after displacement by an arbitrary amount using a micrometer, with after image registration as the reference. The difference between the center of the target and the irradiated field was calculated using our in-house analysis program and commercial software. The end-to-end test was conducted at three facilities, and the IGRT positional accuracy evaluation was verified. RESULT: The maximum difference between the displacement of the target determined from the EPID image and the arbitrary amount of micrometer displacement was 0.24 mm for the in-house analysis program and 0.30 mm for the commercial software. The maximum difference between the center of the target and the irradiation field on EPID images acquired at the three facilities was 0.97 mm. CONCLUSION: The proposed evaluation method using our in-house phantom and analysis program can be used for the assessment of IGRT positional accuracy.

Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most common vector-borne disease in the Northern Hemisphere caused by spirochetes belonging to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl) complex. Borrelia spirochetes circulate in obligatory transmission cycles between tick vectors and different vertebrate hosts. To successfully complete this complex transmission cycle, Bbsl encodes for an arsenal of proteins including the PFam54 protein family with known, or proposed, influences to reservoir host and/or vector adaptation. Even so, only fragmentary information is available regarding the naturally occurring level of variation in the PFam54 gene array especially in relation to Eurasian-distributed species. Utilizing whole genome data from isolates (n = 141) originated from three major LB-causing Borrelia species across Eurasia (B. afzelii, B. bavariensis, and B. garinii), we aimed to characterize the diversity of the PFam54 gene array in these isolates to facilitate understanding the evolution of PFam54 paralogs on an intra- and interspecies level. We found an extraordinarily high level of variation in the PFam54 gene array with 39 PFam54 paralogs belonging to 23 orthologous groups including five novel paralogs. Even so, the gene array appears to have remained fairly stable over the evolutionary history of the studied Borrelia species. Interestingly, genes outside Clade IV, which contains genes encoding for proteins associated with Borrelia pathogenesis, more frequently displayed signatures of diversifying selection between clades that differ in hypothesized vector or host species. This could suggest that non-Clade IV paralogs play a more important role in host and/or vector adaptation than previously expected, which would require future lab-based studies to validate.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate computed tomography (CT) number calibration curves affect dose calculation accuracy. Although CT number calibration curves registered in treatment planning systems (TPSs) should be consistent with human tissues, it is unclear whether adequate CT number calibration is performed because CT number calibration curves have not been assessed for various types of CT number calibration phantoms and TPSs. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate CT number calibration curves for mass density (ρ) and relative electron density (ρe ). METHODS: A CT number calibration audit phantom was sent to 24 Japanese photon therapy institutes from the evaluating institute and scanned using their individual clinical CT scan protocols. The CT images of the audit phantom and institute-specific CT number calibration curves were submitted to the evaluating institute for analyzing the calibration curves registered in the TPSs at the participating institutes. The institute-specific CT number calibration curves were created using commercial phantom (Gammex, Gammex Inc., Middleton, WI, USA) or CIRS phantom (Computerized Imaging Reference Systems, Inc., Norfolk, VA, USA)). At the evaluating institute, theoretical CT number calibration curves were created using a stoichiometric CT number calibration method based on the CT image, and the institute-specific CT number calibration curves were compared with the theoretical calibration curve. Differences in ρ and ρe over the multiple points on the curve (Δρm and Δρe,m , respectively) were calculated for each CT number, categorized for each phantom vendor and TPS, and evaluated for three tissue types: lung, soft tissues, and bones. In particular, the CT-ρ calibration curves for Tomotherapy TPSs (ACCURAY, Sunnyvale, CA, USA) were categorized separately from the Gammex CT-ρ calibration curves because the available tissue-equivalent materials (TEMs) were limited by the manufacturer recommendations. In addition, the differences in ρ and ρe for the specific TEMs (ΔρTEM and Δρe,TEM , respectively) were calculated by subtracting the ρ or ρe of the TEMs from the theoretical CT-ρ or CT-ρe calibration curve. RESULTS: The mean ± standard deviation (SD) of Δρm and Δρe,m for the Gammex phantom were -1.1 ± 1.2 g/cm3 and -0.2 ± 1.1, -0.3 ± 0.9 g/cm3 and 0.8 ± 1.3, and -0.9 ± 1.3 g/cm3 and 1.0 ± 1.5 for lung, soft tissues, and bones, respectively. The mean ± SD of Δρm and Δρe,m for the CIRS phantom were 0.3 ± 0.8 g/cm3 and 0.9 ± 0.9, 0.6 ± 0.6 g/cm3 and 1.4 ± 0.8, and 0.2 ± 0.5 g/cm3 and 1.6 ± 0.5 for lung, soft tissues, and bones, respectively. The mean ± SD of Δρm for Tomotherapy TPSs was 2.1 ± 1.4 g/cm3 for soft tissues, which is larger than those for other TPSs. The mean ± SD of Δρe,TEM for the Gammex brain phantom (BRN-SR2) was -1.8 ± 0.4, implying that the tissue equivalency of the BRN-SR2 plug was slightly inferior to that of other plugs. CONCLUSIONS: Latent deviations between human tissues and TEMs were found by comparing the CT number calibration curves of the various institutes.

The mitochondrial genomes of the genus Echinococcus have already been sequenced for most species and genotypes to reconstruct their phylogeny. However, two important taxa, E. felidis and E. canadensis G10 genotype (Fennoscandian cervid strain), were lacking in the published phylogeny. In this study, the phylogeny based on mitochondrial genome sequences was completed with these taxa. The present phylogeny highly supports the previous one, with an additional topology showing sister relationships between E. felidis and E. granulosus sensu stricto and between E. canadensis G10 and E. canadensis G6/G7 (closely related genotypes referred to as camel and pig strains, respectively). The latter relationship has a crucial implication for the species status of E. canadensis. The cervid strain is composed of two genotypes (G8 and G10), but the present phylogeny clearly suggests that they are paraphyletic. The paraphyly was also demonstrated by analysing the complete nucleotide sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) of E. canadensis genotypes from various localities. A haplotype network analysis using the short cox1 sequences from worldwide isolates clearly showed a close relatedness of G10 to G6/G7. Domestic and sylvatic life cycles based on the host specificity of E. canadensis strains have been important for epidemiological considerations. However, the taxonomic treatment of the strains as separate species or subspecies is invalid from a molecular cladistic viewpoint.

The small intestines of 420 wild canids (111 corsac foxes, 191 red foxes and 118 wolves) from Mongolia, were examined for adult worms of the genus Echinococcus. The Mongolian genotype of Echinococcus multilocularis was found in fifteen red foxes and four wolves, whereas two genotypes (G6/7 and G10) of Echinococcus canadensis were found in two and three wolves, respectively. No adult Echinococcus worms were found in the corsac foxes examined. The genotypes of E. multilocularis and E. canadensis are discussed in terms of host specificity and distribution in Mongolia. The importance of wolves in the completion of the life cycle of Echinococcus spp. is also discussed.

Partial sequences of the DNA polymerase delta (pold) gene from Taenia saginata-like adult worms were sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that pold gene sequences were clearly divided into two clades, differing from each other in five to seven nucleotides. There is little doubt that T. saginata and Taenia asiatica were once separated into two distinct taxa as has been concluded in previous studies. On the other hand, most of the adult worms, which were identified as T. asiatica using mitochondrial DNA, were homozygous for an allele that originated from the allele of T. saginata via single nucleotide substitution. These results indicate that most of the adult worms, which had been called T. asiatica, are not actually 'pure T. asiatica' but instead originated from the hybridization of 'pure T. saginata' and 'pure T. asiatica'.

Detection of taeniasis carriers of Taenia solium is essential for control of cysticercosis in humans and pigs. In the current study, we assessed the positive detection rate of a self-detection tool, stool microscopy with direct smear and coproPCR for taeniasis carriers in endemic Tibetan areas of northwest Sichuan. The self-detection tool through questioning about a history of proglottid expulsion within the previous one year showed an overall positive detection rate of more than 80% for Taenia saginata, T. solium and T. asiatica. The positive detection rate was similar for T. saginata and T. solium. In 132 taeniid tapeworm carriers, 68 (51·5%) were detected by microscopy and 92 (69·7%) were diagnosed by coproPCR. A combination of microscopy and coproPCR increased the positive detection rate to 77·3%. There remained 10 cases (7·6%) coproPCR negative but microscopy positive. Due to the high cost and complicated process, coproPCR is required for the identification of Taenia species only when necessary, though it had a significant higher positive detection rate than microscopy. Combined use of self-detection and stool microscopy are recommended in community-based mass screening for taeniases in this Tibetan area or in other situation-similar endemic regions.

RESUMEN

Human cysticercosis, caused by accidental ingestion of eggs of Taenia solium, is one of the most pathogenic helminthiases and is listed among the 17 WHO Neglected Tropical Diseases. Controlling the life-cycle of T. solium between humans and pigs is essential for eradication of cysticercosis. One difficulty for the accurate detection and identification of T. solium species is the possible co-existence of two other human Taenia tapeworms (T. saginata and T. asiatica, which do not cause cysticercosis in humans). Several key issues for taeniasis/cysticercosis (T/C) evidence-based epidemiology and control are reviewed: (1) advances in immunological and molecular tools for screening of human and animals hosts and identification of Taenia species, with a focus on real-time detection of taeniasis carriers and infected animals in field community screenings, and (2) spatial ecological approaches that have been used to detect geospatial patterns of case distributions and to monitor pig activity and behaviour. Most recent eco-epidemiological studies undertaken in Sichuan province, China, are introduced and reviewed.
