RESUMEN

We study the equilibrium configurations related to the growth of an elastic fibre in a confining flexible ring. This system represents a paradigm for a variety of biological, medical, and engineering problems. We consider a simplified geometry in which initially the container is a circular ring of radius R. Quasi-static growth is then studied by solving the equilibrium equations as the fibre length l increases, starting from l = 2R. Considering both the fibre and the ring as inextensible and unshearable, we find that beyond a critical length, which depends on the relative bending stiffness, the fibre buckles. Furthermore, as the fibre grows further it folds, distorting the ring until it induces a break in mirror symmetry at l > 2πR. We get that the equilibrium shapes depend only on two dimensionless parameters: the length ratio µ = l/R and the bending stiffnesses ratio κ. These findings are also supported by finite element simulation. Finally we experimentally validate the theoretical results showing a very good quantitative prediction of the observed buckling and folding regimes at variable geometrical parameters.

A recently introduced tuning-dressed scheme makes a Bell and Bloom magnetometer suited to detect weak variations of a radio-frequency (RF) magnetic field. We envisage the application of such innovative detection scheme as an alternative (or rather as a complement) to RF atomic magnetometers in electromagnetic-induction-imaging apparatuses.

Within the framework of continuum theory, we draw a parallel between ferromagnetic materials and nematic liquid crystals confined on curved surfaces, which are both characterized by local interaction and anchoring potentials. We show that the extrinsic curvature of the shell combined with the out-of-plane component of the director field gives rise to chirality effects. This interplay produces an effective energy term reminiscent of the chiral term in cholesteric liquid crystals, with the curvature tensor acting as a sort of anisotropic helicity. We discuss also how the different nature of the order parameter, a vector in ferromagnets and a tensor in nematics, yields different textures on surfaces with the same topology as the sphere. In particular, we show that the extrinsic curvature governs the ground state configuration on a nematic spherical shell, favouring two antipodal disclinations of charge +1 on small particles and four +1/2 disclinations of charge located at the vertices of a square inscribed in a great circle on larger particles.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of check-point inhibitor-related pneumonitis (CIP) relies on radiological and clinical patterns which are not specific and can mimic other conditions (cancer progression, infectious diseases or interstitial pneumonitis). Cell pattern analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is well-known to support the diagnosis of interstitial lung disease; nevertheless, this analysis is somewhat performed and not required by immune-toxicity management guidelines for CIP. METHODS: We performed BAL analysis in 5 metastatic melanoma (MM) patients who developed CIP among 112 patients treated with checkpoint inhibitors. We also correlated the BAL features with the computed tomography (CT) scan patterns and with various peripheral blood parameters to better define the profile of this patient population. RESULTS: BAL flow cytometer and cytopathology analyses showed typical and homogeneous features with increased lymphoid population, prevalent CD8 + T cells and inversion of the CD4/CD8 ratio. Moreover, the extent of activated CD3 + HLA-DR + T cells was related to the grading of adverse events. Blood leucocytosis, hypoxemia, normal values for procalcitonin and lactate dehydrogenase were also found together with a cryptogenic organizing pneumonia-like radiologic pattern. In all our patients, CIP was associated with partial or complete response. CONCLUSIONS: Identification of a specific BAL cellular pattern allows clinicians to place this investigation in the appropriate position of CIP diagnosis and management to avoid misdiagnosis or considering this condition as progressive disease and delaying proper treatment.

We investigate the effects of hydrodynamic interactions between microorganisms swimming at low Reynolds numbers, treating them as a control system. We employ Lie brackets analysis to examine the motion of two neighboring three-link swimmers interacting through the ambient fluid in which they propel themselves. Our analysis reveals that the hydrodynamic interaction has a dual consequence: on one hand, it diminishes the system's efficiency; on the other hand, it dictates that the two microswimmers must synchronize their motions to attain peak performance. Our findings are further corroborated by numerical simulations of the governing equations of motion.

RESUMEN

Braided channel networks exhibit a complex interplay between spatial and temporal dynamics. Their behavior is characterized by both simple and multiscaling patterns, and the mechanisms underlying the stochastic processes associated with this dynamics remain incompletely understood. Leveraging Taylor's pioneering work [Nature (London) 189, 732 (1961)NATUAS0028-083610.1038/189732a0], which unveiled scaling relations in a plethora of natural phenomena through what is now known as the Taylor power law (TPL), we propose a physical interpretation of braided channel systems. This interpretation utilizes a specific class of transformation functions applied to the mean of fluvial geomorphic variables measured along cross sections, namely, the number of wet channels, the average width of wet channels, and the entropic braiding index. By analyzing remotely sensed data of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna River in Bangladesh we obtain valuable insight into the spatiotemporal scaling of these geomorphological variables and gather a deeper understanding of the complexity of braided channel systems. Finally, through a direct analysis employing the TPL in conjunction with a fixed-mass multifractal algorithm, we prove that braided channel networks exhibit a multiscaling behavior.

When nematic liquid crystals are constrained to a curved surface, the geometry induces distortions in the molecular orientation. The mechanisms of the geometrical frustration involve the intrinsic as well as the extrinsic geometry of the underlying substrate. We show that the nematic elastic energy promotes the alignment of the flux lines of the nematic director towards geodesics and/or lines of curvature of the surface. As a consequence, the influence of the curvature can be tuned through the Frank elastic moduli. To illustrate this effect, we consider the simple case of nematics lying on a cylindrical shell. By combining the curvature effects with external magnetic fields, the molecular alignment can be reoriented or switched between two stable configurations. This enables the manipulation of nematic alignment for the design of new materials and technological devices.

Motivated by the recent experimental findings by Kumar et al. (Phys. Rev. E., 82, 011701 (2010)) in which the inverse Fréedericksz transition is observed, we have theoretically investigated the parity and the stability of the equilibrium configurations of a Fréedericksz cell with weak planar boundary conditions. Within the one-constant approximation of the Frank theory, the bulk equilibrium equation reduces to the nonlinear pendulum equation. Its solutions, when combined with boundary conditions deriving by the energy anchoring, lose uniqueness, exhibiting various symmetries. Thus, at a given anchoring strength and applied field, the cell becomes a system with metastable discrete energy levels. Our analysis proposes an explanation of the experimental results.

Although transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) youth represent a highly resilient community capable of successfully overcoming adverse life circumstances, they still face social stigma that negatively impacts their health, being at risk of developing negative feelings toward their own TGNC identity (i.e., internalized transphobia). A poorly investigated dimension in TGNC health research is perceived loneliness. Thus, within the minority stress theory, the present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of loneliness and the moderating role of social support in the relationship between internalized transphobia and psychological well-being among 79 Italian TGNC youths aged 18 to 30-years-old who participated in an online survey. The main results show that loneliness partially mediated the relationship between internalized transphobia and psychological well-being. In addition, social support emerged as a significant moderator, as the impact of internalized transphobia on psychological well-being decreased at moderate and high levels of social support, but not at low levels. The findings have significant implications for clinical practice and psychosocial interventions to reduce the impact of internalized stigma and stress on psychological health.

Within the framework of Landau-de Gennes theory for nematic liquid crystals, we study the temperature-induced isotropic-nematic phase transition on a spherical shell under the assumption of degenerate tangential anchoring. Below a critical temperature, a thin layer of nematic coating a microscopic spherical particle exhibits nonuniform textures due to the geometrical frustration. We find the exact value of the critical threshold for the temperature and determine exactly the nematic textures at the transition by means of a weakly nonlinear analysis. The critical temperature is affected by the extrinsic curvature of the sphere, and the nematic alignment is consistent with the Poincaré-Hopf index theorem and experimental observations. The stability analysis of the bifurcate textures at the isotropic-nematic transition highlights that only the tetrahedral configuration is stable.

The complexity of cancer patients and the use of advanced and demolitive surgical techniques frequently need post-operatory ICU hospitalization. To increase safety and to select the best medical strategies for the patient, a multidisciplinary team has performed a new peri-operatory assessment, arising from evidence-based literature data. Verifying that most of the cancer patients, admitted to the intensive care unit, undergo major surgery with localizations in the supramesocolic thoraco-abdominal area, the team focused the attention on supramesocolic peridiaphragmatic cancer surgery. Some scores already in use in clinical practice were selected for the peri-operatory evaluation process. None of them evaluate parameters relating to the entire peri-operative period. In detail, only a few study models were found that concern the assessment of the intra-operative period. Therefore, we wanted to see if using a mix of validated scores, it was possible to build a single evaluation score (named PERIDIAphragmatic surgery score or PERIDIA-score) for the entire peri-operative period that could be obtained at the end of the patient's hospitalization period in post-operative ICU. The main property sought with the creation of the PERIDIA-score is the proportionality between the score and the incidence of injuries, deaths, and the length of stay in the ward. This property could organize a tailor-made therapeutic path for the patient based on pre-rehabilitation, physiotherapy, activation of social assistance services, targeted counseling, collaborations with the continuity of care network. Furthermore, if the pre-operative score is particularly high, it could suggest different or less invasive therapeutic options, and if the intra-operative score is particularly high, it could suggest a prolongation of hospitalization in ICU. The retrospective prospective study conducted on 83 patients is still ongoing. The first data would seem to prove an increase of clinical complications in patients who were assigned a one-third score with respect to the maximum (16/48) of PERIDIA-score. Moreover, patients with a 10/16 score within each phase of the evaluation (pre, peri, and post) more frequently develop injuries. In the light of these evidence, the 29-point score assigned to our patient can be considered as predictive for the subsequent critical and fatal complications the patient faced up.

Within the framework of the two-dimensional Ericksen-Leslie model, we explore the effect of geometric confinement on the spontaneous flow of active nematic gels. The nematic particles are assumed to flow on a cylindrical surface, while a degenerate tangential anchoring is enforced. Using the linear approximation of the motion equations, we show that there is a close interplay among extrinsic curvature, flow, director alignment, and activity. We find that the extrinsic curvature promotes the director alignment parallel to the cylindrical axis and is responsible for raising the critical threshold with respect to the flat case. Our analysis reveals a very rich scenario where the key quantities are the activity coefficient, the tumbling parameter, and the anisotropic viscosity ratio. Thus, solutions can exhibit a double periodicity in both the azimuthal and axial variables. As a consequence, the velocity field can make a finite angle with the cylinder axis and the active flow winds on the surface with a helical pattern, while the director oscillates around the cylinder generators. Our results can be validated on thin layers of nematic gels placed between two concentric cylinders and suggest which material properties are most suited for the design of active microfluidic devices.

Nematic films are thin fluid structures, ideally two dimensional, endowed with an in-plane degenerate nematic order. In this paper we examine a generalization of the classical Plateau problem to an axisymmetric nematic film bounded by two coaxial parallel rings. At equilibrium, the shape of the nematic film results from the competition between surface tension, which favors the minimization of the area, and the nematic elasticity, which instead promotes the alignment of the molecules along a common direction. We find two classes of equilibrium solutions in which the molecules are uniformly aligned along the meridians or parallels. Depending on two dimensionless parameters, one related to the geometry of the film and the other to the constitutive moduli, the Gaussian curvature of the equilibrium shape may be everywhere negative, vanishing, or positive. The stability of these equilibrium configurations is investigated.

The equilibrium shapes of lipid vesicles are perturbed by rigid inclusions. In a two-dimensional vesicle, that may also model a cylindrically elongated tubule, the shape modifications can be determined analytically, and turn out to be significant even far from the inclusion. On the contrary, previous numerical work has given evidence that in the three-dimensional case the shape perturbations decay quite rapidly and are negligible a few inclusion radii away. In this paper, we use the tools of asymptotic analysis to derive analytically the shape of the boundary layer induced by the inclusion. As a result, we are able to determine the dominant part of the free-energy perturbation that, in turn, allows to identify the vesicle points where the inclusion prefers to sit.

Nematic liquid crystals possess three different phases: isotropic, uniaxial, and biaxial. The ground state of most nematics is either isotropic or uniaxial, depending on the external temperature. Nevertheless, biaxial domains have been frequently identified, especially close to defects or external surfaces. In this paper we show that any spatially varying director pattern may be a source of biaxiality. We prove that biaxiality arises naturally whenever the symmetric tensor S=(Vn)(Vn)T possesses two distinct nonzero eigenvalues. The eigenvalue difference may be used as a measure of the expected biaxiality. Furthermore, the corresponding eigenvectors indicate the directions in which the order tensor Q is induced to break the uniaxial symmetry about the director n. We apply our general considerations to some examples. In particular we show that, when we enforce homeotropic anchoring on a curved surface, the order tensor becomes biaxial along the principal directions of the surface. The effect is triggered by the difference in surface principal curvatures.

We derive the hydrodynamic equations for nematic liquid crystals lying on curved substrates. We invoke the Lagrange-Rayleigh variational principle to adapt the Ericksen-Leslie theory to two-dimensional nematics in which a degenerate anchoring of the molecules on the substrate is enforced. The only constitutive assumptions in this scheme concern the free-energy density, given by the two-dimensional Frank potential, and the density of dissipation which is required to satisfy appropriate invariance requirements. The resulting equations of motion couple the velocity field, the director alignment, and the curvature of the shell. To illustrate our findings, we consider the effect of a simple shear flow on the alignment of a nematic lying on a cylindrical shell.

We study the molecular reorientation induced by a textured external field in a nematic liquid crystal (nLC). In particular, we consider an infinitely wide cell with strong planar anchoring boundary conditions, subjected to a spatially periodic piecewise magnetic field. In the framework of the Frank's continuum theory, we use the perturbation analysis to study in detail the field-induced splay-bend Fréedericksz transition. A numerical approach, based on the finite differences method, is instead employed to solve the fully nonlinear equations. At high field strengths, an analytic approach allows us to draw the bulk profile of the director in terms of elliptic integrals. Finally, through the application of the Bruggeman texture hydrodynamics theory, we qualitatively discuss on the LCs piecewise director configuration under sliding interfaces, which can be adopted to actively regulate friction. Our study opens the pathway for the application of highly controlled nLC texturing for tribotronics.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the pleura and the lung is an uncommon spindle cell neoplasm arising from the visceral pleura in the majority of the cases. However there are some extrapleural sites including the lung. Current considerations were raised by a peculiar recent case: an 81-year-old female, no smoker, presented with undefined left thoracic pain. Radiographic findings of a large solid lung mass (10 cm × 9 cm). Computed tomography (CT) confirmed the thoracic mass showing characteristics of a well defined mass with capsule, the position of the mass in proximity of the postero-basal and lateral-basal wall. No secondary lesions were found. Through a left inferior lobectomy and ilo-mediastinal lymph node sampling, the entire mass was resected. Histopathological examination revealed a SFT. In conclusion STF is a rare lesion and this case showed a peculiar extremely large lesion never described before in literature.

We propose a continuum model to describe the molecular alignment in thin nematic shells. By contrast with previous accounts, the two-dimensional free energy, aimed at describing the physics of thin films of nematics deposited on curved substrates, is not postulated, but it is deduced from the conventional three-dimensional theories of nematic liquid crystals. Both the director and the order-tensor theories are taken into account. The so-obtained surface energies exhibit extra terms compared to earlier models. These terms reflect the coupling of the shell extrinsic curvature with the nematic order parameters. As expected, the shape of the shell plays a key role in the equilibrium configurations of nematics coating it.

OBJECTIVES: One of the fundamental steps in an anatomical pulmonary resection is the main and lobar bronchus suture. Nowadays, two different types of staplers are on the market: the linear TA stapler for open surgery (Tyco Healthcare Group LP, Norwalk, CT, USA), which is based on a 'guillotine' mechanism, sewing, but not cutting the bronchus, and the endoscopic linear stapler which both cuts and sews. This study aimed to fill the void in the use of an instrument used to staple and cut at the same time in 'open' thoracic surgery, eliminating the need for a scalpel: the curved cutter stapler (Contour Curved Cutter Stapler; Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc., Cincinnati, OH, USA). METHODS: Between May 2009 and March 2011, the Contour Curved Stapler (Ethicon) was used for the bronchus in 139 cases of non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC)-29 females and 110 males ranging between 48 and 85 years (average 71.1)-and comprising 115 lobectomies (8 bilobectomies) and 24 pneumonectomies (8 on the right lung, 16 on the left lung). RESULTS: All patients underwent a bronchoscopic check-up 30 days after they were discharged: in all cases, the bronchial stump was clearly within normal limits. No cases of bronchopleural fistulas were observed in the 139 patients. CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of this study, the curved cutter stapler showed to be a satisfactory device for securing the bronchus during an anatomic resection (whether lobar or main), in 'open' thoracic surgery. However, even though there were no cases of fistula, we consider that our data is still too limited to be statistically significant.
