INTRODUCTION: Though health-enhancing effects of physical activity are well documented, the majority of the population is unable to implement present recommendations into daily routine. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies might be able to increase the physical activity level. However, the interest of potential users is a mandatory basis for this. METHOD: We conducted an online-survey from 06-07/2015 by asking students and employees from the University of Potsdam for their activity level, interest in mHealth training support and other relevant parameters. RESULTS: 1 217 students and 485 employees (67.3% and 67.5% female, 26.0±4.9 and 42.7±11.7 years, respectively) participated in the survey. 70.1% of employees and 52.7% of students did not follow the recommendation for physical activity (3 times per week). 53.2% (students) and 44.2% (employees), independent of age, sex, BMI and level of education or professional qualification, indicated their interest in mHealth technology offering training support. CONCLUSION: Even in a younger population with higher education, most respondents reported an insufficient level of physical activity. About half of them indicated their interest in training support. Therefore, the use of personalized mHealth technology may be of increasing significance for a positive change of lifestyle.

Background: there is limited data comparing conditions and health service use across care settings in centenarians. To improve health service delivery in centenarians, the aim of this study was to compare the proportion of centenarians who have chronic conditions, take medication and use health care services across different care settings. Methods: this cohort study uses routine data from a major health insurance company serving Berlin, Germany and the surrounding region, containing almost complete information on health care transactions. The sample comprised all insured individuals aged 100 years and older (N = 1,121). Community-dwelling and institutionalised individuals were included. Charlson comorbidity index was based on 5 years of recordings. Hospital stays, medical specialist visits and medication prescribed in the previous year were analysed. Results: while 6% of the centenarians did not receive any support; 45% received family homecare or homecare by professional care services; 49% were in long-term care. The most frequent conditions were dementia and rheumatic disease/arthritis, with the highest prevalence found among long-term care residents. A total of 97% of the centenarians saw a general practitioner in the previous year. Women were more often in long-term care and less often without any care. Centenarians with long-term care showed higher proportions of comorbidities, greater medication use, and more visits to medical specialists compared with centenarians in other care settings. Conclusions: the higher prevalence of dementia and rheumatic disease/arthritis in long-term care compared to other care settings emphasises the role of these diseases in relation to the loss of physical and cognitive functioning.

RESUMEN

A quantum-light source that delivers photons with a high brightness and a high degree of entanglement is fundamental for the development of efficient entanglement-based quantum-key distribution systems. Among all possible candidates, epitaxial quantum dots are currently emerging as one of the brightest sources of highly entangled photons. However, the optimization of both brightness and entanglement currently requires different technologies that are difficult to combine in a scalable manner. In this work, we overcome this challenge by developing a novel device consisting of a quantum dot embedded in a circular Bragg resonator, in turn, integrated onto a micromachined piezoelectric actuator. The resonator engineers the light-matter interaction to empower extraction efficiencies up to 0.69(4). Simultaneously, the actuator manipulates strain fields that tune the quantum dot for the generation of entangled photons with corrected fidelities to a maximally entangled state up to 0.96(1). This hybrid technology has the potential to overcome the limitations of the key rates that plague QD-based entangled sources for entanglement-based quantum key distribution and entanglement-based quantum networks. RESUMEN

Quantum key distribution-exchanging a random secret key relying on a quantum mechanical resource-is the core feature of secure quantum networks. Entanglement-based protocols offer additional layers of security and scale favorably with quantum repeaters, but the stringent requirements set on the photon source have made their use situational so far. Semiconductor-based quantum emitters are a promising solution in this scenario, ensuring on-demand generation of near-unity-fidelity entangled photons with record-low multiphoton emission, the latter feature countering some of the best eavesdropping attacks. Here, we use a coherently driven quantum dot to experimentally demonstrate a modified Ekert quantum key distribution protocol with two quantum channel approaches: both a 250-m-long single-mode fiber and in free space, connecting two buildings within the campus of Sapienza University in Rome. Our field study highlights that quantum-dot entangled photon sources are ready to go beyond laboratory experiments, thus opening the way to real-life quantum communication.

OBJECTIVES: Multimorbidity in centenarians is common; although investigations of the prevalence of morbidity in centenarians are accumulating, research on profiles of co-occurrence of morbidities is still sparse. Our aim was to explore profiles of comorbidities in centenarians. METHOD: Health insurance data from 1,121 centenarians comprising inpatient and outpatient diagnoses from the past 5 years (2009-2013) were analyzed using latent class analysis with adjustments for sex, age, hospitalization, and long-term care. RESULTS: Four distinct comorbidity profiles emerged from the data: 36% of centenarians were categorized as "age-associated"; 18% had a variety of comorbidities but were not diabetic were labeled "multimorbid without diabetes"; 9% were labeled "multimorbid with diabetes"; and 36% "low morbidity." CONCLUSION: Patterns of comorbidities describe the complexity of geriatric multimorbidity more appropriately than an approach focused on a single disease. The profiles described by this specific research may inform clinicians and health care planners for the oldest old.

BACKGROUND: Although the benefits for health of physical activity (PA) are well documented, the majority of the population is unable to implement present recommendations into daily routine. Mobile health (mHealth) apps could help increase the level of PA. However, this is contingent on the interest of potential users. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was the explorative, nuanced determination of the interest in mHealth apps with respect to PA among students and staff of a university. METHODS: We conducted a Web-based survey from June to July 2015 in which students and employees from the University of Potsdam were asked about their activity level, interest in mHealth fitness apps, chronic diseases, and sociodemographic parameters. RESULTS: A total of 1217 students (67.30%, 819/1217; female; 26.0 years [SD 4.9]) and 485 employees (67.5%, 327/485; female; 42.7 years [SD 11.7]) participated in the survey. The recommendation for PA (3 times per week) was not met by 70.1% (340/485) of employees and 52.67% (641/1217) of students. Within these groups, 53.2% (341/641 students) and 44.2% (150/340 employees)-independent of age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and level of education or professional qualification-indicated an interest in mHealth fitness apps. CONCLUSIONS: Even in a younger, highly educated population, the majority of respondents reported an insufficient level of PA. About half of them indicated their interest in training support. This suggests that the use of personalized mobile fitness apps may become increasingly significant for a positive change of lifestyle.
